welcome

letter from the

president The Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand welcomes you to New Zealand, and The Concierges Guide to the Very Best of New Zealand: Recommend New Zealand Magazine. History of Les Clefs d’Or In 12th Century France, the “compte des cierges” (“keeper of the candles”) served in the grand palaces and castles as the gatekeeper or head of the staff, who held the keys for the house. He greeted a palace’s visiting nobility as they arrived, and catered to their every whim. In the grand hotels of Europe, the idea of a “Concierge” survived through the centuries as the palaces evolved into hotels and as the “tourism” industry developed. In 1929 the legendary Parisian Concierge Ferdinand Gillet called together his counterparts across Europe to discuss ways they could co-operate to serve their guests. The Les Clefs d’Or (“keys of gold”) society was founded on the principals of integrity, friendship and professionalism, and the members adopted the golden keys to symbolise the opening of doors for their guests. Today members are recognised by the Crossed Golden Key lapel pins, worn on their jackets, while on duty at the Concierge desk. Today, this organisation has spread to 40 nations and comprises more than 3500 members worldwide. The spirit of this network is embodied in the credo, “In Service through Friendship.”

Our Role Associated to the Union International Hotel Concierges ‘Les Clefs d’Or’, the Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand is a non-profit, non-political, professional association consisting of

the finest hotel Concierges throughout New Zealand. The role of the Society is to support the members, providing a network of experienced professionals to enable them to perform as outstanding Concierges throughout the country. We provide travel and training opportunities, professional resources and a knowledge base, the benefit of the members’ combined contacts and experience, essentially pooling the resources of a close network of established industry professionals to provide our guests with the highest possible standard of service our country has to offer. We are dedicated to promoting professionalism in tourism in New Zealand, and committed to providing the highest possible standard of service to you, our valued guest. The Les Clefs d’Or Concierge at your hotel is the local expert in their region and has a vast array of contacts. The Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand, is a non-profit, non-political professional association, with the country’s best hotel Concierges as members. As a national chapter of the prestigious Union Internationale des Concierges d‘Hotels Les Clefs d’Or, we have the responsibility of spreading the word in New Zealand of the ideals and ethics of our society, promoting professionalism in the hospitality and tourism industry through the concept of “service through friendship”. This means that we must set an example to the industry as a whole, displaying the highest standards of professionalism, honesty and integrity, and above all friendship in our dealings with not only our guests, but within our hotels, and with our many and varied “suppliers”, who contribute to New Zealand’s outstanding success as a tourism and business destination. Recommend New Zealand Magazine is one way we, as an organisation, can contribute by helping promote those we recommend daily, the companies and suppliers who uphold the highest standards of service and attention to detail, and help the Concierges of New Zealand exceed the expectations of our valued guests. We are proud to showcase the best suppliers, as recommended every day by New Zealand’s best Concierges. Diamonds OR PEARLS both are A girl’s best friend

Mention the word ‘diamond’ and the mind conjures up all sorts of images – the moment you received your first diamond, when the light touches the surface and explodes in a rainbow of colour, your favourite celebrity wearing a stunning piece, your mother’s engagement ring.

W

hatever your most cherished memory, a diamond which takes millions of years to create, evokes emotion. Each pearl is unique, from modern classics, to the knee length strands of pearls that Queen Victoria wore, pearls portray quality and elegance in every piece.

Choosing a Gem Most people are familiar with the four C’s when selecting a diamond, but did you know that coloured diamonds are available to compliment your piece of jewellery? When choosing a pearl, there are many items to look for including the grade. The value of a pearl is determined by its overall quality. In addition to their colour, pearls are judged by their size, shape, lustre and surface perfection. Before you buy, talk to Partridge Jewellers in Auckland or Wellington to help you select your pearls. A multitude of hues, ranging through iridescent green, ocean and peacock blues, pink/rose, golden, platinum or rainbow highlights, are available to compliment other gemstones. All colours have their special qualities so individual taste should be the criteria for judging them. The shape of a pearl depends very much on the shell and the whims of nature. Pearl shapes include round, semi-round, drop, baroque, circle and button. The closer a pearl is to being round, the more expensive it becomes. Fine pearls will have an absence of surface marks or depressions. The surface quality is judged by the position and number of blemishes, ranging from marked to exceptional. As with

14 Recommend new zealand magazine | second edition | 2010

any of nature’s creations, it is unusual to find a pearl totally without these markings. Instead, they should be considered as evidence of nature’s art.

GST on Shopping Diamonds and pearls can be purchased from Partridge Jewellers GST (Goods and Services Tax) free, if they are picked up after security at New Zealand Airports. For major purchases, you may have a representative from Partridge Jewellers personally greet you on exit at New Zealand’s International Airports to personally hand over your jewellery, to ensure their safe delivery.

Partridge Jewellers What happens when you place two of nature’s greatest gifts together, diamonds and pearls? You receive one of the most precious gifts known. And, at Partridge Jewellers, they have the experts on hand to help you choose a piece of jewellery that will be uniquely yours. Classic designs for every day wear, through to original and intricately detailed creations from the Partridge Jewellers stores in Auckland and Wellington, await your arrival. The variety of colours and shapes that provide the lustre, radiance, colour and sparkle are available in rings, necklaces, pendants and other exclusive pieces. The value of your diamond and pearl jewellery comes from the joy it provides.

Enjoy the Partridge experience today.

The Fore-word on New Zealand Golfing Holidays

Hon. John Key (Prime Minister of New Zealand and Minister of Tourism) officially launches new Millbrook golf course the “Coronet Nine”.

Christchurch Pegasus Golf Course New Zealand’s newest championship golf course, opened in December 2009. Highlighting a dramatic entrance to the new town of Pegasus 25kms north of Christchurch, Pegasus Golf Course is a par 72, 18 hole parklands style golf course. Shaped by 11 feature lakes, maturing trees and wetlands and framed by views of the Port Hills, Mt Grey and the Pacific Coast, the course reflects a modern take on classic golf course design and provides players of all abilities with a choice on the degree of risk and reward. The course plays approximately 6300m from the championship tees to 5000m from the forward tees, and the playing options require an array of shots. Generous fairways encourage unconstrained and swift play.

special mention: Northland Highly Recommended – Kauri Cliffs

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Queenstown (Arrowtown) Millbrook Golf Resort latest addition – The Coronet Nine Officially opened in February 2010 the spectacular Coronet Nine winds over rolling hills, between streams and wetlands, set in some of the world’s most breathtaking scenic backdrops. The Turner Macpherson designed new nine is part of Millbrook’s overall plan to offer 27 holes comprising three interchangeable ‘nines’ reinforcing Millbrook’s reputation as one of the leading golf resort destinations in Australasia. Golf course designer and former New Zealand touring professional Greg Turner said “the course layout was new to Millbrook, designed with careful consideration to the natural landscapes. By adding extensive wetland corridors, we have already seeing the return of fish and birdlife to the golf course”. The third and final new and improved ‘nine’, to be known as the Arrow Nine, is set for completion by late 2010. The Remarkables Nine, Coronet Nine and Arrow Nine will serve to create three differing 18-hole combinations, where any two out of the three ‘nines’ can be played together.

Kauri Cliffs features in the Golf Digest World Top 50 rankings and is a spectacular example of a golf course crafted into awe-inspiring coastal landscapes in this very special part of the planet, New Zealand. Our insiders rate Kauri Cliffs as the most picturesque golf course in New Zealand and although you will pay between $180NZD to $600 NZD depending on your affiliation, we rate this golf course as a once in a lifetime golfing experience not to be missed. Take a Helilink Helicopter from Auckland City if you only have one day on your holiday spare to play the 18 holes, we highly recommend it!

Queenstown (Arrowtown) The Hills welcomes international members Off the back of yet another successful NZ Open, The Hills extends a warm welcome to international golfers interested in membership and non-member golfing at Arrowtown’s infamous award winning golf course. Shaun has lived and worked in Auckland as a Concierge for 10 years now, and says “I honestly couldn’t see myself doing anything else, I moved to Auckland the year before New Zealand successfully defended the Americas Cup, it was an amazing event as I got the chance to host the likes of Dennis Connor, Paul Cayard and the International sailing fraternity.”

Phil has been working as a Concierge since 2001, in his role, he has met various entertainers, bands, actors and sports stars from around the world. As a Concierge, he receives his fair share of bizarre requests, but says “the most memorable ones are from honeymooners or couples celebrating anniversaries, one Hotel Guest requested 20 teddy bears for his wife – it was quite funny.” When it comes to New Zealand destinations, Phil says “you can’t beat the funky vibe that’s on offer in Wellington.” When Phil is not busy at the Holiday Inn in Wellington, he enjoys married life with wife Kate and despite the 7am starts at the Hotel he still finds time to grow his own vegetables and cycle, and if he wasn’t a Concierge “I would have been a professional footballer playing for Chelsea … in my dreams!”

After spending a few years travelling overseas and living in different parts of the South Island, Chris returned to her hometown Christchurch ten years ago, and started work at the Chateau on the Park, spending the last seven years as a Concierge.

Bryan was fortunate to have started his Concierge training in some of London’s grandest hotels and distinguished Gentleman’s Clubs, such as the Royal Automobile Club in St James. The last 12 years were served at the Concierge desk of the Connaught Hotel. A historic deluxe 5 star hotel in exclusive Mayfair, London. One of the high points in Bryan’s professional career was being accepted into the prestigious world-renowned Les Clefs d’Or in Great Britain.

Shaun loves being a Concierge in Auckland, “I get to see and be involved (in some way or other) in all of the big international events, as well as having the chance to welcome visitors to New Zealand and show them an unforgettable time. From Auckland’s rugged west coast beaches to sailing on the Hauraki Gulf, the amazing award winning restaurants to jumping off New Zealand’s most visited attraction – the Sky Tower. I’m very spoilt for choice when recommending something to do for a visitor in my city.” Shaun welcomes you to Auckland and says, “Let me show you around!”

In 1927, René LACOSTE garnered the name ‘the crocodile’ due to his tenacity to never let go of his prey on the tennis court. A friend developed an embroidered Crocodile for LACOSTE’s blazer which he then wore on the courts. Since then LACOSTE has grown to be one of the world’s leading fashion brands selling high-end clothing, footwear, perfume, leather goods, watches, eyewear and most famously polo shirts. This is the only flagship LACOSTE store in New Zealand.

Established in 1963, Ben Sherman shirts were adopted by the youth movements of the 60’s. 40 years later, Ben Sherman has evolved from its British heritage in fashion, music, film and youth culture, to be one of the world’s leading fashion brands. The Ben Sherman brand has developed into a lifestyle brand encompassing womenswear, jeanswear, footwear, suits and formalwear, kidswear and accessories.

rotorua

Rotorua was the birthplace of New Zealand tourism in the 1800s, when people flocked to Rotorua from around the world to see the amazing Pink and White Terraces – naturally formed silica terraces that cascaded into a volcanic lake. The terraces were destroyed in the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption, but Rotorua’s fame as a fascinating travel destination grew. Today Maori guides feature at the city’s iconic attractions such as Te Puia, following in the footsteps of their ancestors. When explaining the appeal of this region, people like to talk of five spirits. You can feel the spirit of the earth, as it rumbles beneath your feet and escapes, hissing, through fumaroles and geysers. You can witness the spirit of Maori culture at Te Puia, with authentic performance experiences. Soaking in a natural hot spring can rejuvenate your spirit. Or free your spirit with outdoor adventures such as jet boating with NZ Riverjet, or take one of their more adrenalin-filled options such as The Squeeze, to challenge your spirit.

www.recommendnewzealand.com

Apart from its surprising crater, mountain and lake landscape, Rotorua is memorable for striking Tudor-style architecture and beautiful public parks. The farmland around the city is some of the most fertile in New Zealand. Rotorua is renowned for its abundance of trout. The large population of rainbow trout reach impressive sizes and take a very hard fight to land. On Lake Okataina many fish are caught every year that are well beyond the magical 10 pound mark!

Taking one of Helipro’s Scenic Helicopter flights is a great way to get a different view of the region. Helipro also offer Helicopter Flights and landings on New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. This is perhaps the most accessible on earth – White Island, attracting scientists and volcanologists worldwide, as well as thousands of visitors. Approximately 2km in diameter, the full Maori name for the island is ‘Te Puia o Whakaari’ meaning literally: ‘The Dramatic Volcano.’

south island sightseeing

From the tip of the South Island, Farewell Spit, to the friendly locals on Stewart Island, the South Island is well known for its culture of “Southern Hospitality” along with scenery that is quite simply remarkable! You can stand on top of a mountain (many are easily accessible by road) and feel like you are the only person in the world, sit by a lake and watch the trout jumping out of the water, or even choose your own salmon on your way to Queenstown at the Mount Cook Salmon Farm. Highlights of the South Island include:

u Kaikoura – a whale watching mecca. u The West Coast featuring the Fox and Franz Josef Glacier’s – of all the glaciers in the Southern Alps, only the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers have crept as far as the rainforests. These giant tongues of ice have squeezed down their valleys to just 250 metres above sea level. u Christchurch to Greymouth, by rail on the TranzAlpine Express, rated one of the world’s great scenic railway journeys. u Lake Tekapo which turns a wonderful opaque turquoise colour, the result of glacier-ground rock sediment in the water – the exquisite Church of the Good Shepherd is possibly the most photographed church in New Zealand.

52 Recommend new zealand magazine | second edition | 2010

u Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park – with 23 peaks over 3,000 metres high, the Park is home to New Zealand’s highest mountain, Mount Cook, or Aoraki as it is also known. u The resort town of Queenstown, sophisticated and fantastically scenic. Its lake and mountain landscape lends itself well to helicopter scenic flights that you will never forget! u Milford Sound – in perfect weather Milford Sound is like a mirror, in wet weather it comes alive with waterfalls, take a cruise or experience the Milford Track Encounter guided day walk.

WELCOME from the zone

ear friends, welcome to beautiful New Zealand, and to the second edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine, showcasing what makes New Zealand such a fantastic destination. Internationally, UICH Les Clefs d’Or has been organised into geographical zones to aid efficiency and assist with the growing of the organisation’s reach worldwide. In 2009, I was honoured to assume the role of Zone Director for Oceania . This comes with the responsibility of fostering closer relationships between the Concierges in New Zealand and Australia . Our closest neighbour Australia is of increasing importance to our tourism industry year-round, and closer links between the Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand members and our friends across the Tasman have already proven beneficial to the New Zealand economy. As an organisation, we are also pooling our resources and initiative towards 2013, when our Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa, hosts the 60th International UICH Les Clefs d’Or Congress. This is our chance to showcase New Zealand to some of the worlds’ most powerful industry professionals. I trust you will enjoy your holiday in New Zealand, and of course feel free to call upon your Concierge if there is anything you need. Have a wonderful time and we look forward to meeting you. In service through friendship,
