Exclusive Coverage For the second year in a row, KCON LA, held their convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center for 3 days, accompanied by 2 nights of concerts with some of today’s biggest KPOP groups and artists. Celebrating their 5th year in Los Angeles, KCON LA 2016 officially began on Friday, July 29, and ran until Sunday, July 31. Artists began flying into LA on Thursday and were greeted by many fans that came all around the country, and even around the world, to see them. The convention expo consisted of activities for all attendees to do including small inflatable obstacle course and dance floor put out by Toyota for their give away(s) as well as a dance workshop area. There was even a convention stage which was used as a runway, for performances, and even showcased make-up artists. New to this year’s con was the Flower Boy Cafe. Those that attended the Flower Boy Cafe had to purchase a separate ticket for entry, but the convention was open to all those that had purchased a pass. Luckily, we were able to speak with one of the Flower Boys, Ryan Hsu. When asked what their “job” was at the cafe he stated it was a chance for people to come in, grab a drink, and sometimes they would dance or sing for their costumers. When asked about his experience, Ryan had this to say, “Initially. I wasn’t sure whether or not I’d be able to stomach doing a ‘Flower Boy Cafe’.. but after meeting the KCM Staff and they briefed us on their vision for the cafe, it began to seem like a wonderful opportunity. As a KCON veteran who has attended every year since 2012, I can say that the cafe brought something unique and fresh to the convention overall and I’m proud to say I was a part of it. After the amazing weekend, I can look back and truthfully say that I met hundreds of genuinely amazing people that I’ll never forget. Thank you KCON for providing such a wonderful opportunity for me and the other flower boys.” The biggest thing to happen at KCON? Well the artist fan engagements of course! This year, the line-up for KCON LA was ridicu38

lous! Not only did idol groups like Block B, BTS and Monsta X return to KCON, Turbo came as special guests, giving new age KPOP fans a taste of the early pioneers of Hallyu Wave. Fan engagements began on Friday with ballad duo, Davichi, as well as rookie group I.O.I.; GFriend, Block B, Turbo, and Dean on Saturday; with Astro, Eric Nam, Twice, and Monsta X finishing it off on Sunday. Unfortunately, not all KCON artists were able to do fan engagements, but it was safe to say that each of those that did, were able to feel the love from the fans. Fellow Hallyu Magazine staff member June, and myself were able to attend the fan engagement for Astro on Sunday. We were lucky enough to receive a hi touch pass, and all of the members were all smiles as each fan walked by. All members greeted each fan with a “Nice to meet you” or “Good to see you” as they did a double hi touch. With YouTube being such a huge player in KPOP reaching an international audience, many YouTube stars are also in attendance. This year, KCON made it possible for fans of these YouTube stars to meet their favorites! YouTube stars such as JRE, KennyBoySlay, JuNCurryAhn, GoToeKyung, and HEYITSFEIII held their own meet and greets which gave fans a chance to ask them questions as well as get autographs and photos. We had a chance to sit next to JRE, KennyBoySlay and GoToeKyung during the Sunday concert, and though they were visibly tired, we could see how much they appreciated each and every fan that came up to ask for a photo. On Saturday around 6:00pm there were lines wrapped around the Staples Center of people trying to get into the venue. You could hear the excitement of fans and could feel the anxiety from all fans to get into the venue on time. First to hit the stage was JuNCurryAhn performing a violin version of BTS’ “Save Me” followed by rap duo, Eluphant. Aside from the concert to follow, one of the biggest highlights of the night was having a surprise appearance of music legend, Quincy Jones! Jones graced the Staples Center to award UC Berkeley student Suzanne Choi as the recipient of the Quincy Jones Recognition Award. Korean Entertainment & Culture Magazine

Jones made his attempts at the Korean language by saying “Hello” and even “Thank you” in Korean which brought out cheers from the entire crowd! The lights finally went dark, and a video featuring Lee Minh Ho was played. After the video was complete, the actor himself made his mark on the KCON stage. Dressed in a black suit, the actor waited for the crowd to calm before going into his opening speech. First idol group to perform were the ladies of I.O.I. Dressed in red skirts and white tops, the girls danced and sang their hearts out bringing cheers from the crowd. Next Dean showcased his amazing vocals. The crowd went crazy for him before a note was even sang! GFriend was next surprising everyone by walking along the GA floor to the stage acting like they were being followed by the paparazzi. You could see all the fan boys go crazy as soon as the girls reached the stage. Next, Block B members UKwon and Zico did a special collab stage of Boys & Girls”, and then Dean returned to the stage to join Zico in a performance of “Pour Up”! Next was Amber. Being able to perform again in her hometown, Amber, was speechless at the amount of love given to her during her set. To get everyone pumped up for Turbo to hit the stage Astro made a surprising cameo on stage, along with GFriend, and each group performed two Turbo classics! When Turbo finally took the stage, everyone was on their feet! Members Kim Jong Kook, Mikey and Kim Jung Nam had smiles plastered on their faces as they performed their comeback song “Again” and their classic “Loveable”! Seeing Kim Jong Kook dance to “Loveable” was definitely a change compared to his character on popular show “Running Man”. Block B took the stage next but unfortunately member, Park Kyung, was unable to join his mem-

bers on stage. They surprisingly started their set with their latest slower songs “Toy” and “A Few Years Later” but brought up the energy by closing their set with “Her” and “Very Good”. Closing the show was none other than Shinee! Surrounded by a circular screen, videos played of the five member group before rising and exposing them to the crowd. The crowd went crazy as green lights filled the venue! If anyone was to think that Saturday was high energy, and that nothing could top the concert, they were obviously not expecting what was to come on Sunday. The show opened up with Indie group Echae En Route who were followed by Kokkiwon Taekwondo. Kokkiwon sent wooden boards flying into the audience amazing us with their acrobatics, board breaking skills and taekwondo moves. Monsta X started off the show with a dance break by members Wonho and Shownu and then a rap intro by member Jooheon. Astro hit the stage next, and compared to Monsta X’s powerful and beastly stage presence, Astro were oh so cute with the boy next door image. It was now time for TWICE to perform and the crowd went wild! TWICE was one of the most anticipated groups to perform this KCON. Having only debuted late last year, TWICE is one of the biggest female rookie groups out there. Eric Nam was next up and after singing a couple of his own singles, he was joined on stage by Kolaj to sing their duet “Into You”, and then was joined by his good friend Amber, who came back to the KCON stage to sing along with Eric her song “I Just Wanna”. Davichi started off their set by singing “This Love” off of the Descendants of the Sun soundtrack. Although known for their ballads, the ladies of Davichi swooned the crowd with their timeless beauty and amazing vocals. TTS, subgroup of Girls Generation, dawned sparkling red dresses and performed two of their sin-

gles before ending their set with Girls Generation song “Party”. Celebrating her birthday that night, as well as celebrating 9 years with Girls Generation, TTS member, Tiffany, announced that Girls Generation would soon be releasing their new single, “Sailing”. Closing the show was none other than BTS. Before even being announced, audience members could see the members taking their spots on the stage and the screams filled Staples! BTS stood in the middle of a circular transparent screen and a camera filmed the members inside the screen flooding the jumbo screens with images of the group. Once the screen was lifted, screams became ear piercingly loud. As the confetti cleared the air, and all the acts left the stage, my main thought was “Man… that was amazing!” Each year KCON hopes to bring some of the huggest acts on stage, and they never disappoint. Any hiccups along the way are normally forgotten by the end of the night and I stand there waiting for more. Written by Julie Thai

e was being so adamant of finding out whose artwork he has been purchasing for the past 7 months. I kept looking away while he was insisting on meeting the artist that he had fallen in love with. Finally, I looked up and my eyes were welling up with smoldering tears and my lips were trembling. I had just opened my gallery in Chicago and right away it was successful. I was representing artists from all different walks of life, including myself. I signed my artwork with my mother’s maiden name and not very many people knew that it was me and that is the way I liked it. One of the artists I represented was from Korea and she was trying to cross-over to the States and have showings. She introduced me to KPOP and Big Bang. I immediately loved their music and style. All of the members were so attractive and unique, but one member intrigued me and I needed to find out more about him – T.O.P. Choi Seung Hyun is not only attractive and artistically gifted, but he has a passion for Art. I started following him on Instagram and immediately noticed all of his posts on conceptual, modern, pop, abstract, and contemporary art. I am a fiber artist and I dye my own fabric, which at times resembles abstract work. I decided to tag T.O.P. in a picture of my latest piece on Instagram and I did not mention that it was my art. Not in a million years did I think that he would even take a second to look at it. T.O.P. commented on the picture and stated that he would love to visit my gallery. He flew to Chicago the following month for the first of many visits. He asked for a background on the artist and I told him everything, but did not say that I was the artist and stated I did not know what the artist even looked like. T.O.P. purchased the piece immediately. He stated that he would visit again whenever he had time. I thought that was the last time I would see him and thought he had forgotten about my gallery, but I was wrong. He unexpectedly showed up 2 months later as I was closing and asked if he could see more on this artist, “Lara.” These unexpected visits went on for the next 7 months. During these visits, we would sometimes grab a quick bite to eat, sightsee, talk about art and ourselves.

Exclusive Coverage Now 9 months after our initial encounter, he is standing in front of me demanding to know why he has never been able to meet “Lara.” I was screaming so loud inside, “It’s me! I’m Lara!” but the words couldn’t form. Choi Seung Hyun confessed he discovered love and passion and that it accompanied Lara’s art. I looked away immediately to try and extinguish the smoldering tears that had started to form, while my lips were trembling. I relentlessly gave up. I looked right into his soft, but piercing eyes. He grabbed my hand and pulled me close to him with our lips a few inches apart. Before he kissed me, he whispered, “I knew it was you all along who had stolen my heart.” Fictional story by: Tania S Lara-Carlstrom Photos from T.O.P instagram

POKEMON NOMEKOP Pokemon Go has been banned in Korea and all the Korean Pokemon lovers are devastated, but do you know the reasons behind it? A country that has some of the best and the fastest internet in the world, which also available for free almost everywhere, bound to have a good excuse for this.

To start off, Google maps don’t have enough information on Korean streets. If you ever been to Korea you might have noticed that Google maps is not the best to rely on while traveling there. Korea has their own private companies that provide map apps, and they are one of the best at that too. You can never go wrong with Naver Map. But here comes the problem for Pokemon Masters that are currently living here. The game is build upon Google maps, so how can you play it if Korea doesn’t use it? Why not just have Google collaborate with Korean map companies? There are few reasons why this is not happening. Private companies, who own all the maps, do not want to share their rights and who can blame them?

But if there is a will, there is way! Well, more like a small mistake that allowed a loophole. South Korea has 12 sections that are blocked, however, here comes a small yet very satisfying ‘but’. There is one place that is accessible by Google maps and that is Sokcho. It is the place to be for the gamers who want to ‘catch ‘em all’, but keep in mind that getting there will be a problem. Not only was Sokcho a nice place to visit before, now as it became the only place where you can play this game all the busses and hotels have been booked by the fans. Others will just have to wait for their turn, or get yourself a car and a friend whose place you can crash at for few days.
