He has appeared on Running Man (which is a globally popular TV show), numerous radio shows, internet programs, and so forth, gaining the love of audiences around. Not content with only displaying his comedic expertise, he is now breaking into the music scene under the name of “Uncle D.” He has partnered up with the rapper Boogiedogg, who has established himself as one of the greats to look out for in Korea. Boogiedogg has previously taken part in the HaHa Mong Show, as well as collaborated with various musicians of different genres on countless stages over the years. It has also been sung with complete honesty and energy, making it a memorable performance by these two artists who are determined to pursue their musical goals no matter what obstacles may lie ahead. Now it is time for the world to be shocked by and fall in love with the diverse and unique music created by the Korean duo DnB!

Interview:
NAFLA Interview &Photography by June Saladino
HM: When did you first become interested in being a hip hop artist/rapper? NAFLA: Hip hop was just a hobby since the 8th grade. It was a side hobby and I was putting my stuff out on the internet and it somehow got a buzz and people started to know and recognize me. That’s when I...I was like I’m graduating soon, I don’t know what to do so I decided I would give it a try and follow the buzz. HM: What or who inspired you towards this genre? NAFLA: I really like the BPM you know, like the beats per minute. It’s not so hard but it’s not gentle, it’s like you ride it, it’s like a vibe...a groove. I really like that kind of BPM. I try to write it different, keeping the vibe and the groove a different way from how other people would do it. HM: You have worked with powerhouses Dumbfoundead and Dynamic Duo. What was that experience like and are there plans for any future collaborations with them? NAFLA: My experience towards them, I didn’t treat them different than other features I did, which means I didn’t put any pressure on it. I was thinking if I put pressure it could just ruin what....who they believe is me. I just do it but if I do extra, extra it might be kind of different. I had no pressure doing features with them, it was pretty fun and came out good. Of course I want to collaborate more with them and even other artists on projects. I’ve been communicating and keeping in touch with them. HM: Where do you find your inspiration for your songs, do you use personal experiences for any of them or do they come from ideas off of the top of your head? NAFLA: It differs, I get inspired by movies and maybe from other songs, from my per10
sonal experiences or maybe it could be his (Mike Hong, his video producer/manager) personal experience. We could just be drinking and he talks to me about his life and something could hit me. You know we just talk and I’m like that sounds cool and I could catch a phrase and that just builds a whole product, not even just a song, but also a video. I get inspired by random stuff, everything, not just one person. HM: When you’re writing your songs, do you start with the lyrics and then add the music or do you start with the music and then work the lyrics into them? NAFLA: Well the first thing is how I feel, my mood. That’s the first thing, first it’s am I happy or am I sad and that builds the base. If it’s at night I might feel kind of gloomy or if I’m drinking a shot I might feel happy or hyper and that’s how I set my mood. Then I find a particular music that describes that mood and then I start my lyrics after. HM: Do you think there is a huge difference in your performances from LA and Korea? What about the fans, are they pretty much the same or do you see differences? NAFLA: When I perform it’s kind of different. Here (US) alot of people go to concerts like they go to clubs. It’s like more towards we want to have fun, party and dance to the music. In Korea it’s more like I want to see them perform, I want to see how they rap like as a show so that’s kind of different. HM: KPop has taken the US by storm.... over the last couple of years it has gained a huge following. Korean hip hop is following suit especially with shows like “Show Me The Money”. What are your thoughts on this and have you experienced this growth yourself? NAFLA: Yeah, because people keep talking here and there, even my parents watch “SMTM”. That program is bigger than hip Interview
hop, they can also watch “SMTM” because it’s fun, there’s alot of drama and different episodes. I think it causes a huge impact on our growth in KHipHop. I think it’s really good because without “SMTM” it would still be a small genre and not recognized.
get some beats from Gray or Zico. That’s my desire.
HM: How did you come up with the name NAFLA, is there any special meaning behind it?
NAFLA: Very hard in the US for sure. The reason we went to Korea is because we got recognized in Korea, we thought this could be the start and it could be big. We have recognition mostly in Korea right now rather than the US. We’re just trying to build our way everywhere, KHip Hop is building everywhere.
NAFLA: Yes, there is a meaning, it’s pretty simple. Me and my friend were recording some songs a long time ago in the 9th grade or 10th grade and I was trying to think of a different name. I forgot (inaudible) because my other name sounded kind of corny so I needed another name. We were just drinking Sprite and on the label it said 100% Natural Flavor and so he just took out the first syllable from natural, NA and the second from flavor, FLA and it came out NAFLA. HM: You recently performed in the Bay area. Besides the show in LA on September 23rd, are there any plans for more shows in California or any other US shows that fans will be able to see you at? NAFLA: Well I’d been planning some shows since I came back. I was trying to plan some shows but things kind of didn’t work out so I think since that didn’t work out I just changed my mind and decided to work on some more music and just relax. So I think after LA I’m just going to relax, make some more music and try to find something inspirational. HM: Are there any domestic or international artists that you would really like to collaborate with in the future? NAFLA: It has to be reasonable or just like my desire. I wish I could work with Kanye West or Frank Ocean, I was listening to Frank Ocean in the car. As far as domestic artists....I would like to work with alot of producers like (inaudible) rappers, maybe
HM: When you first got started as an artist, did you find it harder to gain recognition in the US or Korea?
HM: If fans want to keep up with what you’re doing, what is the best way to follow you? I know you have a Facebook page, are you on Twitter or Instagram? NAFLA: I do both Facebook and Instagram. Mostly Instagram, it’s pretty easy access. My Instagram is @NasungCityBoy HM: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans or anything that you would like them to know about any upcoming projects? NAFLA: I’m thinking of making an album, that’s my next step. I just released an EP, “New Blood”. I just want to release an album soon. I’m getting it ready, not sure when it will be released but getting it ready as fast as possible. HM: Is this (“New Blood”) on iTunes? NAFLA: Yes, it’s on iTunes. HM: Thank you for taking the time to sit down and talk with us. NOTE: You can also listen to NAFLA’s music on Sound Cloud and see his videos on YouTube. Also, NAFLA and the rest of the members of MKit Rain have returned to Korea but we hope to see them back in the US doing a tour next year.
MKit Rain Show
in LA
MKit Rain Show in LA went down at the historic Belasco Theatre on Friday, September 23, located in Los Angeles, CA. The line-up included hip hop artists Loopy, NAFLA, Bloo, Owen Ovadoz, Young West, AP and Niahn. Each artist brought their own flavor to the stage and some collabs were even thrown into the mix. The show brought a crowd so hype that throughout all stages, you saw hands up, heads bobbing, and dancing throughout the entire show.
Artist, NAFLA, even had his mother in the audience, dancing among fans. Each artist differed in their delivery and each individual’s stage presence brought something new to the stage. In between sets you could see each artist walking amongst the fans and some were lucky enough to grab a picture or two with them. Definitely a good way to come back to LA after being in Korea as a thank you to their fans.

CLUBS Are you a club person, do you like dancing all night long or simply hanging out with your friends? Here are some club spots that might want tocheck out if you visiting Seoul.
Gangnam clubs: The clubs in this area are more of a higher end. They are bigger in size and will require more spending, however the atmosphere is worth it. A lot of famouse DJs spin at these spots and well as you might catch a glimpse of celebrities. Club Ellui (Hotel Ellui, 551 Dosan-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea) This probably the biggest and the most epensive club you can visit. Idols like Zico and GDragon are a common sight here. Club Arena (Gangnam-gu, Nonhyeon Dong. 18-2, Lex Hotel B1) This spot is very popular among many, it might not be the biggest, however this would be a place to go if you are more of ‘partying at the table’person.
Hongdae clubs: As this is an area next to the Hongik University you will find yourself in a younger crowd. The clubs are smaller, but no less fun. Secret Society (Mapo-gu, Seogyo-dong) This is perfect lounge spout if you are more into cheeling with friends then dancing. It is lets you emerge into underground hip-hop scene and a lot of rappers like to spend their free time here. M2 (Mapo-gu, Seokyo-Dong 367-11,B1 of OHOO Building) One of the most famous electro clubs. Great atmosphere, one simply cannot go wrong if you love EDM.
FALL FOOD Korean Written by Dina Piven
It might still be quite warm in Korea, but the time for amazing autumn-winter snacks is here. Korea has a vast range of treats that are perfect when you feel the weather getting cold. One of the best snacks, and our favorite is 계란빵 egg bread. It is true when they say that the simplest things are the best. You might argue with this fact, however one cannot argue that this is one of the tastiest snacks. Egg break is also very easy to make in the comfort of your home, if you have an oven. Another street food that is hard to pass by is 호떡 Hotteok. This pastry’s secret is the amazing filling of melted caramelized sugar with nuts. But it does not just stop there. There so many versions that you can have a full meal, starting with a savory vegetable and noodle one and finishing with the dessert one.
September was also the month of 추석 Chuseok, and all the foods that Koreans usually lay out during this festival. If you missed the holiday but still want to try all the delicious food, then head over straight to you local market where you will be able to find stands selling 전 Jeon. This fried goodness is usually prepared by the women of the house, but you can also try it when you visit the market. While you at the market don’t forget to stop at the 떡 Rice Cake section. If you are looking for some fall flavors, you can pick up a pumpkin one. Perfect for those who are looking for some ‘Halloween’ spirit among food. For pumpkin lovers another food you might want to check out is Pumpkin Monaca. A perfect snack to share with friends and easy to bring along with you.
