CON L.A. 2017 celebrated their sixth year of being one of the biggest celebrations of KPOP and Korean culture. For the third year, the convention part of KCON was held at the L.A. Convention Center, with two nights of concerts at The Staples Center. With an amazing line up including artists like Seventeen, Heize, Cosmic Girls, Astro, Super Junior subgroup D&E and Got7, KCON brought in over 85,000 fans to celebrate not just KPOP, but Korean Culture.

KCON brought back the Flower Boy Cafe for the second year, but what set apart KCON this year was the special events held as a partnership with a couple of this years sponsors. Specifically, AT&T held a fan signing event at one of their store fronts for SF9 fans, which allowed fans to meet the members, snap a photo, and for some, receive an autographed poster. AT&T also held a “private meet and greet for a limited 100 Starlights (the fan club name for mega group VIXX) which allowed fans to receive a signed poster, and again, a group photo.

Throughout the three day convention, KCON announced groups that would be visiting certain booths throughout the day. Whether it was rookie co-ed group, K.A.R.D., KCON veteran group VIXX or returning artist ASTRO at Toyota, or former U-KISS member, Kevin Woo, at the AT&T booth, or the beautiful ladies of Girls Day at the SEP booth, there was always something for fans to get excited about. This was awesome for fans that weren’t able to get into the fan engagments that were held

throughout the day of the conventions. This year was Kevin Woo’s first time at KCON L.A., and he announced the launch of his own merchandise. As a fellow KissMe, I was excited to see the former U-Kiss member standing on his own as a “solo” artist. Not only was his merchandise stylish, but, there was a special meaning behind the line he called “Love More”. What Kevin hoped to do with his merchandise was spread more love into the world especially with so much going on in the world today.

Each KCON concert was jam packed with artists ranging from major rookie groups, Wanna One, who had just debuted about two weeks prior to attending KCON, and veteran KCON groups Got7 and VIXX who were at the event for their third time. Performers for night one were Cosmic Girls, Girls Day, D&E, Seventeen, SF9 and VIXX. Night two had another amazing line up with K.A.R.D., Got7, Heize, G.O.D. member

Kim Tae Woo, Astro, Oh My Girl! NCT127 and Wanna One. What set apart these concerts from other years was the use of the audience. This year each artist entered throughout the stadium with some coming up from the stage and floor access, but many entered by coming down the stadium seating getting close to fans. A variety of artists also helped to announce and host throughout the night also getting close to fans by doing so within the seated sections once again.

Although both concerts had so much going on and equally amazing and jam packed with so much singing and dancing, night two stood out. That night marked K.A.R.D. member Somin’s birthday which prompted fellow member, and L.A. native, BM, to ask the audience to sing her happy birthday, bringing the member to tears. Another act to shed tears at the concert was solo artist Heize. Before the start of her song, “Stars”, a request was put out to the audience on the screens to turn on the flashlights

on their phones. Seeing so many lights light up the arena brought tears to her eyes which she tried to hide. Two fans had the night of a lifetime during Got7’s “pinata time”. Pinata time was also new to this years KCON where groups like VIXX, Seventeen and Astro gave special gifts, or had special moments on stage with their fans including “photo time with VIXX” where they did a variety of poses on each side of the stage, with member Ravi then going into the audience, random dance play with Seventeen, and

Astro shot personalized shirts into the audience. But what did Got7 do? They had a proposal. A lucky fan was chosen by members BamBam, Youngjae and Jackson. Youngjae sang a song, BamBam hit her with a cheesy line, but Jackson took it a step further by calling the audience member close to the stage and giving her a full blown hug. The audience member was willing to share so she brought down someone with her who I can only

assume was her friend or her sister. Definitely a night to remember for those two! KCON has grown so much since kicking off in 2012. Starting off in Irvine, and now in L.A., KCON has branched out to Japan, Mexico, and for the first time this year, Australia. Events like KCON bring KPOP and Korean culture to so many and only continues to grow. Lets see what else they have in store for us in the future!

K

CON, an unforgettable HALLYU experience Kpop fans from all across the U.S. as well as some from Mexico, Canada, Korea and Japan really look forward to every summer since 2012. This year’s KCON LA had in my opinion one of the best concert lineups. This year KCON mixed in seasoned performers, newbies not quite rookies anymore and a few very new rookies. Just prior to the start of each nights concerts, all of the artists walked the Red Carpet. Fans who were lucky enough to get a Red Carpet pass in their ticket packages waited anxiously to get a glimpse of their favorite idols before enjoying a jam packed show. Day one was hosted by Kevin Woo, formerly of U-Kiss. That in itself got all of the fans super excited. This was Kevin’s first time at KCON and hosting the Red Carpet, and he did a super job. First to make their appearance was rookie boy group SF9. Although they are still quite new, there were ALOT of fans there to see them. I don’t really know much about them YET, but I will definitely be keeping a close on on them and am excited to see what the future holds for them. SF9 was followed by the Cosmic Girls, Girls Day, Super

Junior D&E, VIXX and Seventeen. I don’t who had the louder screams that day, SF9 or Seventeen but you can be sure both of their fandoms as well as those of the other artists for day one were all well represented. After the Red Carpet, Kevin Woo not wanting the fans to feel ignored made his way from the stage area and went down to the fans posing for a few photos. Red Carpet for Day two was hosted by Danny Lim, who is on staff with KCON. Artists walking the Red Carpet on the second day included Heize, ASTRO, NCT127, WANNA ONE, KARD, G.O.D. member Kim Tae Woo, Oh My Girl, and GOT7. Both Oh My Girl and Kim Tae Woo were “special guests” this year. This year marked the second time that GOT7 made an appearance at KCON and for anyone who saw them the first time you will remember that Jackson was not able to make that trip so it was really great having all 7 members there this year. We here at HALLYU Magazine really enjoyed being able to bring you some of the highlights of KCON LA 2017. If you have never been to KCON try to make it next year. It’s a weekend filled with a lot of fun and two great concerts and a chance to meet so many KPop fans from all over. Hopefully we will be seeing you there!

anna One was the group formed from the recently concluded and much talked about second season of Produce 101 - a survival competition series which aired on Mnet from April 7 until June 16, 2017. The group is composed of the top 11 contestants namely Kang Daniel, Park Jihoon, Lee Daehwi, Kim Jaehwan, Ong Seongwu, Park Woojin, Lai Guanlin, Yoon Jisung, Hwang Minhyun, Bae Jinyoung and Ha Sungwoon. Wanna One is signed under YMC Entertainment and will be promoting for a year and a half - with their contracts ending by December 31, 2018.

The group officially debuted last August 7, 2017 through an event called Wanna One Premier Show-Con. It was the talk of the town for its grand scale as it was held in Gocheok Sky Dome where about 20,000 lucky fans were in attendance. Consequently, the group released their debut extended play 1x1=1 (To Be One) on August 8. Though they have just debuted, their immense popularity is undeniable. From topping various digital charts to winning on music shows - bagging 15 trophies as of writing. And even performing in various Korean Festivals worldwide. They are definitely a group to watch out for!

HOW SCHOOL HELPED ME ACHIEVE

MY DREAMS Written and Photographed by: Ryann Ellis

W

hen first getting into the Korean cultural scene it never occurred to me to actually travel to the country to experience it firsthand. In fact, South Korea had never crossed my mind before 2011. After years of research and a lot of debate with myself I decided that if I wanted to eventually work in Korea that I needed to make sure it was a place I could live.

Now, when choosing a program there are many options to consider. A part of my dream was that I wanted to go to a S.K.Y school. A S.K.Y school is what would be considered an Ivy League School in the U.S and is top tier. The schools included in these are Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. Originally, I had my sights on Seoul National University, but I got accepted into Korea University which was just as exciting.

It took about a years’ worth of preparation to get ready for my trip. When my school and third-party provider told me to be ready they were not kidding. While filling out all the paperwork I started having second thoughts about traveling. It was expensive, and to get passport and medical backgrounds up to date was extremely stressful. All I can say is that one must really have the devotion to travel to complete it. I pushed through the stress and doubts and filled in everything early. Before long I received the email from the International Studies Abroad that I had been accepted into my program.

After paying the wonderful 5,000 dollars for my program and another 1,500 for my plane ticket I was set to go. The night before my departure I was beyond anxious. It was the first time I’d be traveling to a different country on my own which in terms is definitely different from traveling to a different state in the U.S. I was worried about academics first and foremost, but the second back thought was just a cultural difference. I thought I wouldn’t fit in. I had these thoughts looming in my mind until I touched down in Korea and even when checking into my dorm room that night.

Photos from: https://dis.korea.ac.kr/

In the end, South Korea was more than I could have ever imagined. I had set a standard and it beyond exceeded those ideas. There were no cultural issues that I faced while studying for the month, and I can definitely say that I would love to live there and work there in the future. One thing about dreams is that even if they seem out of reach keep at them. I never thought I’d be able to fly to Korea and live there for a month, but I was able to. I even got to meet some idols and experienced their culture outside of K-Pop.

Upon returning I now have a new dream and that’s to return to the country and work there. I highly encourage anyone who wants to study in a different country whether it be South Korea or anywhere else to do it. It’s definitely an eyeopening experience and it literally allows you to walk, talk, and experience everything for yourself. It has a different feel than even attending a concert in the U.S which surprised me. I’d do it again in a heartbeat if given the chance to so I hope you can go out and catch your dreams too.

My Korean Life:

C

CHUSEOK PLANS

huseok. It is one of the most important holidays in Korea. It is comparable to Thanksgiving. All families get together and share food, stories, and thanks about their ancestors. The dates can be different depending on the lunar calendar. This year, it will be October 4th-6th, in the middle of two holidays. For the first time in awhile, Korea will have a long Chuseok holiday. Many people have a week off which means that there will be many trips happening. In my case, I will be headed to the beautiful Jeju Island for four days; it is said to be the Hawaii of Korea! I will be going with a fellow teacher friend. We are beyond excited. I am very happy I booked a few months ago because many destinations surrounding this country are either sold out or extremely expensive at this point.

Written by: Cassie Clifford

My friend and I will be leaving Busan on the evening of September 30th. For 2 of the 4 days we are there, we will be on a small group tour in a bus that fits only 9 people! We will only have a driver, not a guide. I like that because we can view our stops at our own pace, and take in the sights in our own way. Our tour will take us to the East of Jeju Island first. We will go to Hallasan National Park, eat the local black pork bulgogi, see the famous female diver show. There are many other things on the list, as well! For the South and West tour, the driver will be taking us to the Innisfree Jeju House, the beautiful Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, and a few mountain areas. Both tours will be a jampacked day full of excitement and adventure! As for the rest of our vacation, we will see where our feet lead us. We have no set plans but my friend and I will make the best of our lovely trip. It will be an unforgettable memory.

BerAdel Equestrian Club Written by: Nadezhda Hope

I

n the depths of Geonggi Province, the city Ansan is famous for its marvelous horse club. BerAdel Equestrian Club is a horse heaven for both riders and horses. This horse club spans over acres of land with enormous Golden Dome that functions both as indoor arena and as stables. Two endless pastures is every horse’s dream. As well as multiple buildings for members only. A hall that functions as reception and museum. Large parking lot with horse trailers on premises.

An outdoor cafĂŠ stand and all sorts of horse themed sculptures and decorations, for example, a red horse shaped post box where you can send your letters. As a cool bonus they also have an African Grey parrot by the gate entrance to the Golden Dome. BerAdel provides all kinds of services including horse boarding, and all level riding classes. There are nonKorean horse trainers and riders who work at this location. And they always welcome passerbys to

stop and feed carrots to their horses, conveniently you can purchase the carrots at their cafĂŠ stand, only warning is to be careful of your fingers as horses to bite! This luxurious horse club has nearly 50 horses and their facilities are in high standard of comfort for riders and guests. It is most famous for being a film location for Boys Over Flowers and ever since drew many more film, drama and tv show

crews to their doors. It is a great place to visit on a weekend however, be prepared to book in advance and pay a high price, which in turn is reasonable as it is a luxurious, top equestrian club that is open to the public so you are paying for luxury experience. If you wish to just visit, there is a general bus that goes to nearby location from which you would need to walk or take a taxi, best way is to rent a car.

About the Artist:

2007 Art Sonje Project #5: Chan Sook Choi - Re-move, signifying the idea of moving again as well as to remove, this exhibition explores Choi’s artistic research on Korea comfort women for Japanese soldiers, Choi’s Japanese grandmother who married a Korean laborer dispatched to Japan just before Korea’s liberation from Japan and then moved to Korea, and the ‘Yangji-ri‘ grandmothers who migrated to the DMZ town in the Korean peninsula, etc. More specifically, Choi’s artistic research keeps an intentional distance from the dichotomous thinking that deals with the war and the dramatic period as a macronarrative HIS-story, and sheds light on the in-between space or the tertiary space produced as migrated women settled down, and their traces continued to be erased and re-made.

Chan Sook Choi received her bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication and Media Art as well as her master’s degree at University der Künste in Berlin, Germany. Choi won the grand prize at the international media art competition hosted by Bibliart and Berlin Pergamon Museums in 2008, and was selected the artist for Nafog project in 2009, a young artist support program sponsored by the City of Berlin. In Korea, Choi presents her work in Private Collection as a selected artist of the NarT, a young artist support program sponsored by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture in 2010. Since then Choi was also selected Tomorrow’s Artist by Sungok Art Museum in 2012, the young artist prize at Gallery Loop in 2015, the Young Artist Support Program at Seoul Museum of Art in 2017. Choi has also been conducting her narratology experimentations on psychological migration and the human memory as a medium through a multi and interdisciplinary methodological approach, in performances at the National Theater of Korea, New York Queens Museum, Sacheon Galaxy Museum of Contemporary Art, Real DMZ Project, and Berlin Grimm Museum, etc.

Korean Traditional Fashion Hanbok, the traditional clothing of Koreans “Hanbok” (also called “joseonot”) is a collective term for traditional Korean clothing. Though there have been slight changes in hanbok over time in terms of material, preferred colors, and the length of the skirt or jacket, the hanbok’s basic format has more or less remained the same for the past 1600 years.

k about the in th u o y o d t Wha Korean tradif o n io is v e r modern tional clothes? nbok a classical ha r fe e r p u o y ke Do odern style li m a r o D S N like S Secret?

Having coexisted with the Korean people ever since the beginning of their history, hanbok is a beautiful cultural heritage that all Koreans should be proud of not only for its historical value but also for its uniquely Korean artistic significance. The hanbok, which changes only slightly according to the season, social status and situational context, is highly regarded for its creative design and overall elegance.

Although the hanbok to some extent lost its place in Korean daily life due to the rapid inflow of Western civilization after Korea’s opening to the Western world in the 19th century, it is still the most representative of Korean dress and a symbol of the identity of the Korean people.

Chuseok Traditional Food

Jeon One food that cannot be left off the table during holidays and parties is jeon. These Korean pancakes are made by slicing fish, meat and vegetables and then lightly frying them in a batter of flour and eggs. The ingredients used vary from region to region and even by household.

Green Onion Jeon Recipe

Directions 1. Clean, wash, and drain a handful of wild green onions (or about 10 stalks of normal green onion). 2. Cut them into 5 inch long pieces. 3. Make batter by mixing ½ cup flour, ½ cup water, 1 ts soybean paste, and ½ ts sugar in a bowl. Mix well until the batter is smooth. 4. Place a non-stick pan on the stove and heat it up. 5. Add about 3 tbs vegetable oil to the heated pan. 6. Put the green onion on the pan parallel to each other, in the shape of a rectangle. 7. Pour the batter over the green onion evenly. If you want some seafood (chopped squid, mussels or fresh oysters) in your pancake add it on top of the green onion before pouring the batter. 8. While the pancake is being cooked, keep patting it, pressing it slightly, and keeping it in a nice shape with your spatula. 9. A few minutes later, when the bottom of the pancake turns crispy and golden brown, turn it over. 10.Cook a few more minutes until the bottom of the pancake turns crispy and golden brown again, and flip it or turn it over. 11. Cook another minute and transfer it to a serving plate.

잘 추석 ! ! ! 요 새 내 지 Chuseok is one of Korea’s three major holidays, along with Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Dano (the 5th day of the 5th lunar month). Chuseok is also referred to as Hangawi. Han means “big” and gawi means “the ides of the 8th lunar month or autumn.” According to the lunar calendar, the full harvest moon appears on the 15th day of the eight month.

Another major element of Chuseok is traditional liquor. On Chuseok, families and relatives gather together and hold a memorial service for their ancestors with liquor made of the newly harvest rice. After the memorial service, they sit and spend some time together as a family, drinking the liquor and eating food.

He kicked-off his tour in Seoul, South Korea and has extended to 29 cities in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe. ‘M.O.T.T.E(母胎)’ means “mother’s womb” in Korean, which could also mean “from birth”. This is also an acronym of ‘Moment Of Truth The End’ and it refers to the moment of truth, truth itself, loneliness and anguish hidden behind the glamorous life from his massive success. Act III represents the third decade of his life and the third stage of his career, commenced by the release of his self-titled album ‘Kwon Ji Yong’. G-DRAGON debuted as a solo artist with the release of ‘Heartbreaker’. The album was a success with more than 200.000 copies sold and earned Album of The Year from 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards, while the single of the same name became a number-one hit. G-DRAGON later formed a duo with fellow Big Bang member T.O.P to record and release the album ‘GD&TOP’ (2010), which contained the top hits “High High”, “Oh Yeah”, and “Knock Out” where the album debuted at number-one on Gaon Album Chart. His first EP ‘One of a Kind’ (2012) was drawing positive receptions, placing first in Billboard World Album Chart and

became the highest-selling album by a Korean soloist since his own album Heartbreaker. In support of his first EP, he embarked on his One of a Kind World Tour visiting 9 countries and 13 cities in 2013, gathering a total of 570,000 fans. After touring extensively, he went back to prepare for his second studio album ‘Coup D’état’ (2013) featuring collaborations with top musicians such as Diplo, Baauer, Boys Noize, Sky Ferreira, Siriusmo, Zion.T, Lydia Paek, and label-mate Jennie Kim. Recently G-DRAGON released his self titled album ‘Kwon Ji Yong’ that marks his first solo music after four years with ‘Untitled, 2014’ as the lead single. The lyrics of the album show the genuine “Kwon Ji Yong” side of G-DRAGON going through dilemmas and loneliness like an ordinary adult experiencing growth pains. Recognized as one of the most influential leaders in music and fashion in his country, G-DRAGON was named by Forbes in 2016 as the most influential person under 30 in Asia’s entertainment and sports. Producing not only for BIGBANG but also for his and his bandmates’ solo releases, G-DRAGON has written 23 number one songs.
