Through the Years

Saying Goodbye to Girls’ Generation as We Know Them SM Entertainment have recently confirmed about reports stating that the members of Girls’ Generation will not all be remaining with the agency. It is said that only Taeyeon, YoonA, Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sunny have renewed their contracts, with members Sooyoung, Seohyun, and Tiffany deciding not to re-sign with SM Entertainment. It definitely is a heartbreaking moment especially to SONE but we wish all the members’ success in the field they have chosen to walk through!

There are numerous cultural sites as well as traditional and modern structures along the way that make the trip all the more worthwhile. The first place to visit is Seoul Museum of Art. HANEUL PARK

World Cup Park is made up of five parks: Haneul Park, Pyeonghwa (Peace) Park, Noeul (Sunset) Park, Nanjicheon Park, and Nanji Hangang Park. Haneul Park derives its name, which means ‘sky’ in Korean, from its status as the park with the highest elevation in the area. To get to the top you must first climb a staircase of 290 steps or take the winding hiking trail. The top of the park offers impressive views of the city.

to arrive at the unpaved, redwood-lined path. In autumn every year, the Seoul Eulalia Festival is held at the top of the park to highlight the magnificent field of reeds. Walk among the reeds that move with the wind like silver waves to feel autumn at its fullest.

NAMI

ISLAND Nami Island was formed as a result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam. It is a half moon-shaped isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a great victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo (reign 1455-1468). A special feature of Nami Island is that there are no telephone poles. This is because all electric wires were built underground to keep the natural feeling of the landscape. The island is 553,560 square yards with chestnut trees and poplar trees throughout.

THE GARDEN OF MORNING CALM The Garden of Morning Calm, a 30,000 sq.m garden, is open year-round and is a great spot to visit for families, couples, and photographers alike. The garden was conceptualized by Professor Han Sang-kyung (Gardening Department, Sahmyook University) while he was serving as an exchange professor in America. His vision was to create a garden that would become world-famous and spread the concept of Korean beauty throughout the world. The inspiration for the garden stemmed from a poem written by Sir Tagore, a great Indian poet, who described Korea during the Joseon Dynasty as “The Land of the Morning Calm.” Scenic walkways, beautifully manicured grass, and flower beds connect the garden’s 20 different themed sections. The garden houses about 5,000 kinds of plants, including 300 varieties native to Baekdusan Mountain, known

as a spiritual mountain to the Korean people. Flowers are in bloom from March to November, so the garden is usually busy during this period. In addition to the beautiful foliage of the garden, there are a variety of festivals and displays held throughout the year. Address: 432, Sumogwon-ro, Sang-myeon, Gapyeonggun, Gyeonggi-do Directions: From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal take a bus bound for Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal, or take Bus No. 1330 at Cheongnyangni Transfer Center and get off at the Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal From Cheongpyeong Terminal, take Bus 31-7 to the Garden of Morning Calm. SEORAKSAN

NATIONAL PARK When it comes to autumn destinations, the first mountain that comes to mind for most is Seoraksan Mountain. Also referred to as Seolsan and Seolbongsan, the mountain was named Seorak (‘Seol’ meaning ‘snow’ and ‘Ak’ meaning ‘big mountain’) because the snow would not melt for a long time keeping the rocks in a permanent state of white. A feast for the eyes throughout the year, rich colors make Seoraksan a main attraction in autumn. There are plenty of hiking trails along the mountainside; when planning your hiking route, take into account that the best places to view leaves are Cheonbuldong Valley, Osaek Mineral Spring, Osaek Jujeongol and Baekdam Valley.
