VIXX SHANGRI-LA IN SINGAPORE Written by Clara Wong & Queenie Chew | Photography by Clara Wong

A

fter performing in Singapore with Live Fantasia Utopia in 2015 and Live Show in 2016, VIXX returned again for the 3rd consecutive year with their powerful vocals and sleek dance moves for their “Shangri-La” concert in Singapore! With VIXX to kickstart this festive period, it was definitely going to be merrier this year. Fans and the media both had a chance to see VIXX earlier that day during the press conference which was held at Gaincity Megastore @ Sungei Kalut. The six members sat down and answered questions from the press. VIXX had actually arrived the night before and N mentioned that they had the chance to finally get to sightsee Singapore during the night and that they also ate Chili Crab. Ken very excitedly shared how much he likes Kaya and bought 3 jars to bring back home. The boys expressed their love for their fans and how they would always be greeted by the warm cheers every time they came back to our sunny island. VIXX performed their first song “fantasy” followed by “desperate” before greeting their fans which drew loud cheers from the crowd. The concert continued with various songs from their latest album such as Shangri-la

& Black Out, and other hit songs from their other albums like Chained up, Fantasy and Voodoo Doll. VIXX and the fans had a really interactive night, especially during the QnA session where fans had a chance to ask them questions by writing on post-its prior to the concert. Things got even more exciting when N had to hug every member from the back and say something nice to them. Cheeky members decided to avoid N by pouring water on their backs but couldn’t escape. Ken and Ravi danced to Red Velvet’s Red Flavor and Hyuk danced to Sunmi’s ‘Gashina’ which got everyone screaming and cheering. Hongbin was even asked by a fan if he forgot his social media account password due to his inactivity for a long while and he denied saying ‘I did not forget my password. I’m actually very active online.’ and other members dared him to post something up on Instagram before leaving Singapore. The cheers did not stop there. VIXX returned again for an encore stage in which they performed “love equation” and “heaven” which got all the fans up on their feet and also garnering the loudest cheers. After an unforgettable night filled with cheers and laughter, the concert came to a bittersweet end. The members expressed their love for Singapore and how they would definitely be back again!

CNBLUE

[BETWEEN US] LIVE IN MANILA Written by Lilian Calulot

T

he rock band group CNBlue successfully completed their Between Us Tour with its last leg in Manila last December 9 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The 4-member band composed of Jung Yonghwa on lead vocals, Lee Jonghyun on lead guitar, Kang Minhyuk on drums, and Lee Jungshin on bass guitar owned Saturday’s stage, singing to their biggest hits for over two hours. The coliseum lit up with blue lightsticks as the concert kicked off with a multi-LED stage performing the Korean version of Radio. Yonghwa hyped the fans up even more during their introduction as he showed off the Filipino colloquial terms he learned such as ‘lodi’ and ‘petmalu’. “I’m your lodi, Yonghwa”, he said as he introduced himself. ‘Lodi’ is reversed spelling for the English word idol while ‘petmalu’ is a play on the Filipino word “malupet” or amazing. He also mentioned that he was happy to be back in the country.

CNBlue have previously completed two solo concerts in Manila – Blue Moon (2013), Can’t Stop (2014). They continued the show with Can’t Stop followed by It’s You and Love Girl. During their Sweet Holiday stage, Yonghwa would continuously throw hearts to the fans delight. After performing Love, Yonghwa continued to show off Filipino terms he learned by asking “Alam nyo po ito?” (Do you know this?) Referring to their next song Lie. They also had an acoustic set wherein the boys jammed to songs such as Isn’t She Lovely. During Love Light, Minhyuk sang a verse causing the crowd to go crazy. Their Manito stage was the most heartfelt as the whole coliseum sang along to the song lyrics neorul saranghae (I Love You). The show concluded with Young Forever. On his ending speech, Yonghwa expressed his gratitude to Filipino Boice saying, “Maraming Salamat po Pilipinas! Always your lodi.” (Thank you Philippines! Always your idol.) Before leaving the stage, the boys promised to comes back again. We truly can’t wait for the next time they own the Philippine stage again.

My Life in Korea:

Holidays Written By: Cassie Clifford

Before coming to Korea, I made myself aware of the fact that Christmas, my favourite holiday, is not the same as it is back home. I am from Canada. We see snow on the ground, visit family and friends, exchange gifts, and eat good food. Korea is not like this at all. It is a couple’s holiday, Valentine’s Day 2.0. Sure, there are Christmas lights at places, and you can hear holiday tunes, but during the days leading up to it, I definitely didn’t feel the same excitement as I’m used to feeling. Besides the fact that Christmas is a couple’s holiday here, I made sure to make myself feel somewhat of the spirit. I went to a Christmas party, and hosted my own. We exchanged gifts, and had a potluck. On Christmas Eve weekend, I went to Seoul with a friend. We wanted to go see the Christmas Lights festival, but it was downpouring. We didn’t want to get soaked while trying to appreciate our surroundings. I decided to do some gift shopping for friends and family at Namdaemun Market when the rain stopped. I was greeted by a Santa Claus, and heard some

holiday music as I walked through the area. Last that day, my friend and I spent our Christmas Eve night watching the musical “All Shook Up”, which depicts the life of young Elvis. It was hilarious, and wonderful! The cast sang “Jingle Bells” in Korean. I left Seoul the morning of the 25th and made my way back to Busan. I had a very busy day ahead of me. As soon as I arrived, I went to my friend’s house as she was hosting a Christmas lunch, South African style. I gave my friends the cards I made for them. After the lunch, I made my way to another area to have Christmas dinner, hosted by the navel base here. It was a very western meal, making my homesickness a little more bearable. I went with friends, and we had a great time there. My Christmas ended with watching a Ghibli and Christmas with Jazz performance by the Kazumi Tateishi Trio. They played Ghibli and Christmas music. My first Christmas away from home was a success. I am so grateful for the expat friends I have here who made things less lonely.
