Life in Korea: One Year In!
ALPHABAT
IN PARIS Written and Photographed by: Soizic Cistac
O
n January 30, in the famous Parisian New Morning room, the Korean group AlphaBAT offered its fans an unforgettable fanmeetinglike concert.
The program of festivities, a wide range of events and activities offered by the organizer Beyond Entreprise in association with Katchi Events: fanmeeting, selfie with members of the group, concert and games with the group to win gifts during the same concert. In spite of a delay on the beginning of the program, the whole was reunited to delight for more than 4 hours the present Alphas (name of the fandom of the group). One thing to keep in mind as a result of this concert, the proximity of the group and its audience is undeniable. Kappa, Gamma, Beta and Epsilon were very happy to share this moment with their French fans. Thanks to the
small intimate space offered by the small room, the group was able to install a real complicity: high fives, hearts, eye-contact that the 4 members offered to the lucky ones present that night. Through these exchanges throughout the songs and games on stage, AlphaBAT has proved to be the king of sharing. In addition to being very close to its public, it is a talented group that made a stop in Paris. Following many departures, the group now composed of 4 members does not have many songs to his credit. Among them are ‘Get Your Luv’ and ‘Baby’, two songs that have not been very successful in Korea and yet have all the features of trends in the year 2017. But that did not discourage them so far to go on a Europe Tour since they had other things to offer on stage. In addition to playing their new songs, AlphaBAT has taken back their first songs that made them known to the general public such as ‘Tantara’ ‘AB City’.
The fans have to their great singing in chorus a few fanchants which enlivened the faces of the artists and at the same time animated greatly the atmosphere of the concert. The group did not fail to entertain its audience by also playing covers of very famous songs. We will have noticed a distinct preference for the band Beast newly Highlight since it is 3 songs of the band that they decided to sing, Among these covers, there were also songs of Winner or Sechs Kies. The concert rich in various activities has made it possible to discover to the public present the group of K-pop Made in France ; Anyway. Composed of 5 Koreans, the group ensured the intermission of the show by performing a song and dancing on one of their tracks ‘Follow you’. A group with potential that we will not fail to follow. The fans had the right to a question and answer session for which they played the game by answering the questions but also by performing aegyos, songs or dance requested by the fans. During this Q & A session, the group also hinted that they might come back to Europe for another series of concerts. In the meantime, do not miss AlphaBAT if this opportunity arises and if you want to discover a cute and talented group with songs well underestimated.

ast year was productive concerning the debuts. During this competitive year, it was a real dare to leave a lasting impression on the audience. In this large range of propositions still, some groups took the lead! Wanna One for example, hold a huge space. Their debut was highly looked forward. Already rewarded by programs like Mnet Asian Music Award, they settled in our headsets like a must to listen. Dream Catcher also,
had a very good start. Attractive concept developed by their agency, they interested many fans. Mixing the cute and the dark, they became inevitable. TRCNG as for them, had a big success into the pop lovers’ public. Matching with the current music trend and showing a powerful energy, they charmed more than a fan. Finally The Boyz are still making their way but the presence the members express and the audience’s reaction predict they won’t leave us soon.
iMe is throwing a Global Auditions! If you are 15 to 21 years old, beautiful inside and out and you can sing, dance, rap or even act, then maybe you are the one that we are looking for!

PYEONGCHANG 2018: Olympic Winter Games Written by: Lee Shin-yon | Image Credits: www.pyeongchang2018.com
T
he XXIII Olympic Winter Games or PyeongChang 2018 is on the corner of the schedule! Huge international sport event, South Korea was selected by the International Olympic Committee in 2011 to welcome its Olympic Flame in the district of PyeongChang. Grouping together not less than fifteen sports like the alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboard
and speed skating, the Olympic Winter Games are an important financial stake for the country hosting. Every sports lovers, every teams supporters are to come! What triggers several budgets for the transportation, accommodation, food, and so many more. A considerable capital to optimize in the aim to make swell the country’s economy. So it’s not a surprise if South Korea promotes hard the celebration since already one year and develops different strategies to attract tourists and travellers from all around Asia. The KTO (Korea Tourism Organization) played an important role
in this colossal marketing process and didn’t hesitate to led a complete delegation to China to promote the Winter Games during the C hina International Travel Mart in November 2017. Concerning J apan, the KTO and the Government of the Gangwon Province in South Korea that will host the games, organized a booth in the Haneda Airport in Tokyo during November and December 2017 where they attracted more than 12000 visitors. Several travel shows were organized in addition in the strategic cities like Paris for example, where the KTO promoted the Winter Games
in November and December. Also some other cities were reached like Manila , Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur . If the excitement is fully present and the country can’t wait to attend the event, the Government of South Korea nevertheless, doesn’t forget the political context. North Korea will be present to the event and the tension between the two countries is still palpable. Last week however, the two Koreas agreed to walk under the same flag during the ceremony and even accepted to build a common female hockey team together. An historic team that would relight the hope of a peninsula united or at least reconciled.
T
he 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Torch Relay began its journey last November 1 kicking off in Incheon. The olympic torch will illuminate all through out Korea for 101 days. The relay was kicked off by figure skater You Young and has included celebrities such

KIM YUNA: Achievements & Promotion for Olympics Written by: Lee Shin-yon
Y
una Kim, born in 1990 is one of the most talented ice skaters South Korea ever had. Olympic champion in 2010, she holds the highest score in figure ice skating history. Among her several victories, she was world champion in 2009 and 2013 and had the silver medal to the Olympic Winter Games in 2014. Yuna Kim retired in 2014 from the competition at the age of 24 only and occupies since then, the position of ambassadress and honorary member of the Winter Olympic Games 2018 Organization Committee.
The date with PyeongChang was taken since 2014. As the prestigious Yuna Kim’s career is a huge marketing appeal that attracts many sports lovers, in addition to the fact that she’s the pride of her country and represents it advantageously, her role in the organization of the coming Winter Games is crucial. Tremendously covered in the media, the now 27 years old athlete took part to many promoting events like the videos from November 2014 until June 2015 for the Olympic Day with the official event’s slogan: Passion Connected.
This media position benefits a lot to the country that hopes to attract many tourists and supporters through Asia and even the World. The challenge is considerable! Promote South Korea through the sportive world and inject capitals that will feed the national economy. However, as for Yuna Kim is concerned, it’s another stake. The transition after a sportive retirement is always a new challenge but also a new battle. It’s not about to win a medal this time but definitely to build a future. And the double world champion is not exempted of this
delicate period in an athlete’s life. This media coverage around her name is a massive springboard to her. An opportunity to open new doors, new roads and new projects. Her marketing value is temporary and she is aware of it. This is why this great competitor is optimizing all the chances this amazing event can brings to her. That the name Yuna Kim keeps on being a name to remember, a name to count on, a name guarantying her a new life outside the ice skating rink and as brilliant and shiny than her sportive career and medals.

My Life in Korea:
One Year In! Written by: Cassie Clifford
M
y one year anniversary in Korea is coming up. The date is February 16th. Last month, I had to make the decision as to whether I would renew my contract or go home. I am enjoying my adventure in
1.
Korea so much, I decided to renew. I will be staying in Busan for one more year. As February 16th approaches, I have been reflecting what I have done this past year. I decided to make a list of tips and advice I would give a fellow expat who is just moving here.
Study Korean beforehand, or early into your arrival. I taught myself Korean before coming. I am taking Korea classes once a week. I am at an intermediate level now. It’s really helpful when living here and getting around. I highly recommend learning it.
2.
3.
If you are coming to teach, be flexible.
The schedule can change last minute, and you’ll probably be the last to know. It’s not as though your superiors are being mean, they’re just really busy and forgot to tell you. Don’t take it personally.
Be Assertive.
South Korea has a very “빠리빠리 (bballi bballi)”, fast-paced culture. There are little to no orderly lines and queues. You’ll be pushed out of the way, or someone will bolt in front of you. Don’t be offended, or angry. It happens.
4.
5.
Find Hobbies.
If you’re simply going to work, and out for drinks, you’re going to become bored very quickly. I am taking Korean classes, have learned to sew here, and attend a language exchange, Languages Exchanges are where Koreans and foreigners help each other learn the other’s respective language.
Lastly, Be wary of drivers.
They are crazy here. It does no matter if you think you have the right of way; the driver always thinks they do. Be mindful of your surroundings.
