Life in Korea: Olympic Experience
KARD in Manila Written and Photographed by: Lilian Calulot
S
outh Korea’s popular quartet group KARD graced the Philippine stage last February 9 in Kia Theater as they showcased their dynamic and powerful performances to Filipino HIDDEN KARDS - the group’s fanclub name. Presented by MyMusicTaste, Manila leg is slated as the last stop for their WILD KARD in Asia Tour. BM, J. Seph, Somin and Jiwoo kicked off the show with their performance of Into You flaunting their impressive vocals and dance skills much to fans’ delight. During the Q/A portion, they were asked how they find the Philippines and they excitedly talked about how they went shopping in Bonifacio Global City the day prior to the concert and that they also tried Jollibee - a well known Filipino fast food chain. BM also mentioned how he has a lot of Filipino friends back in LA and that he is familiar with a whole lot of other Filipino food naming sinigang, lumpia, and chicken adobo as examples. The members revealed other random tidbits about themselves as the Question and Answer portion went on. J. Seph jokingly teased and imitated how Jiwoo would sneeze. He also obliged when fans asked him to sing Infinite’s Be Mine. He definitely captivated the crowd judging from the wild screaming which echoed inside the theater.
When asked what they do during their free time, Somin said she likes to do nail art and shopping. While BM likes to go to the gym and J. Seph enjoys sports such as table tennis and foot ball. Other than group performances, each member prepared individual stages showcasing their individual prowess. Jiwoo performed a cover of Winner’s Really Really. J. Seph’s stage was a self-written composition which he said he wanted to perform ever since he became a trainee five years ago. Somin performed a cover of Taeyeon’s Fine. And BM showed a lot of swag with his performance of Living Good Part 2. The whole group also performed Side to Side and 24K Magic. Before the concert ended, J. Seph thanked the fans for their endless support and love. And he thoughtfully said that KARD can’t shine bright just by themselves. A message that must have melted every HIDDEN KARDS’ heart. Jiwoo chimed that they will do their best to no disappoint the fans. BM cheerfully asserts that they have to hold another concert in Manila. As the concert comes to a close, they performed Push & Pull and Hola Hola. And had everyone on their feet jumping, chanting and dancing during their Oh Na Na and Living Good performances. It was truly an incredible experience to sing and dance along to the group with such an incredible synergy and stage presence. We are definitely looking forward the next time they own the Philippine stage.

Written and Photographed by: Lilian Calulot
orean actor Ji Soo was back in Manila to celebrate Valentines with his Filipino fans.
With a long list of films and dramas he was part of, it is in no surprise that he has amassed a large number of local following.
The actor has starred in various Korean drama series such as Angry Mom, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and OCN’s crime drama Bad Guys 2: City of Evil - his most recent project; He was also cast in films like One Way Trip as well as in SeoulMates, a Philippine - Korean independent film.

back in the Philippines. He mentioned about the scent of familiarity that he loves the moment he stepped in Manila. He also shared a list of Filipino food he liked which includes adobo, barbecue, kangkong, and Jollibee. The six-foot-one actor showed up with a bashful smile as he waved and greeted the crowd. the fanmeeting. He said it is an honor to be spending Valentines with his Filipino fans and that he will take the opportunity to be upclose and personal with them and be able to create wonderful and lasting memories. KOREAN SCHOOLS
EXPLAINED Information from: https://wenr.wes.org/2013/06/wenr-june-2013-an-overview-of-education-in-south-korea
T
he Korean education system operates on a 6-3-3-4 basis, with six years of primary schooling followed by three years of middle school, three years of high school and four years of undergraduate education. The first nine years of schooling are compulsory for children between the ages of six and 15; however, school attendance is close to universal all the way through to the upper secondary level. Students typically attend their local elementary and junior high schools and have little school choice until the end of compulsory education. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology oversees the national school curriculum, with flexibility in design accorded to individual schools depending on their objectives. The last major curriculum overhaul was enacted in 1998 (revised in 2009 and 2012) with a focus on promoting individual learning pathways, the reduction of study loads, and the nurturing of creative thinking. The so-called ‘Seventh Curriculum’ consists of the Basic Common Curriculum and the Selected Curriculum at the high school level, covering 10 years from primary school through the first year of high school.
Students are given the flexibility to choose their courses in the final two years of high school as they prepare for a future career or study path. Despite the emphasis of the l998 reforms on promoting individuality and creativity, Korean students still face incredible pressure and long hours of study in the pursuit of strong results on examinations that can make or break chances at future career success.
Primary Education Primary education in Korea is free and compulsory from the age of six. Primary education runs from first grade through to sixth grade, and the enrollment rate at this level is essentially universal. English has been taught as a part of the regular curriculum since 1997, with one hour per week assigned to third and fourth graders, and two hours per week for fifth and sixth grade students. Core subjects include: ethics, Korean language, mathematics, science, social studies, PE, music and the arts. Over 34 weeks of schooling per year, children attend 850 hours of classes in grades one and two, 986 in grades three and four, and 1,088 in grades five and six.
Middle School
High School
Middle school runs for three years and is free and compulsory. Since 1990, progression from primary school to middle schools has essentially been universal. In middle school, students are streamed according to ability in mathematics, English, Korean language, social studies and science.
High schools are divided into general/ academic, vocational, and special purpose (foreign language, art, and science high schools). Graduates of middle schools or the equivalent may enter high schools. This threeyear period of study is neither compulsory nor free; nonetheless, the progression rate from middle school to high school has been above 99 percent since the mid-1980s. The majority of students attend general/academic schools, and about 30 percent attend vocational schools.
Other core subjects, which are not abilitystreamed, include moral education, PE, music, fine arts and practical arts. In addition to these core subjects, students pursue extracurricular and optional courses, including home economics and technology, foreign languages, computer and information technology and environmental education. Annual instructional hours total 1,156 at this level.
Admission to senior high school differs across school systems. In major metro areas, designated “equalization areas, a computer lottery system places students, while schools
in other regions admit students based on prior academic achievement and schooladministered entrance examinations. At a minimum, those entering upper secondary must have a Junior High School Diploma. Both public and private schools follow the national curriculum framework developed by the ministry. In the first year (grade 10), the curriculum includes 10 compulsory subjects and 10 elective courses. The 10 compulsory subjects are: Korean language, ethics, social studies (including Korean history), mathematics, science, technology and home economics, physical education, music, fine arts, and English. After the first year of general education, students select their major areas of study, with options to pursue humanities & social studies (divided into geography, history, politics, economics and cultural studies), natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology and earth science), or vocational training. Most students at general/academic schools choose a path based on their future college preference. Students graduate with a Senior High School Certificate. Vocational/technical high schools offer general secondary education in the first year, with specialized courses in the fields of agriculture, industry, commerce, fisheries/ maritime, and home economics in the final two years. At the end of vocational high school, students receive a Vocational High School Certificate.
To graduate, students must attend a minimum of two-thirds of all classes (220 days), and promotion between grades is based on educational assessment and evaluation, with midterm and final exams at the end of each semester. Students receive activity records providing detailed information about their academic performance. These records, which include attendance, extra-curricular and service activities, and details of awards, are increasingly used for admission to university in order to reduce the pressure of admissions examinations. Aside from general and vocational high schools, the government also runs foreign language high schools, science high schools, and art high schools. These ‘special purpose schools’ have greater autonomy and students gain entrance through a lottery system. Approximately 10 percent of students who attend academic high school in Korea attend a special purpose school.
Higher Education According to government figures, 85 percent of Korean institutions of higher education are private. Approximately 78 percent of university students and 96 percent of professional school students are enrolled in private institutions. Government funding for Korean universities accounts for under 23 percent of total university revenue, significantly lower than the OECD average of 78 percent. Although Korea’s universities do not rank that well in global rankings, there is incredible pressure on high school students to secure places at the nation’s best – or most highly regarded – universities, as institutional reputation and alumni networks are strong predictors of future job prospects. The top three – often referred to as ‘SKY” – are Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University. According to the influential Joongang Ilbo University Rankings, the top 10 universities in 2012 were:
• Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) • Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) • Yonsei University • Seoul National University • Sungkyuwwan University • Korea University • Sogang University • Kyung Hee University • Hanyang University • Chung-Ang University

Since its foundation in 1886 as “Ewha Haktang”, Korea’s first modern educational institution for women, Ewha has been a driver of change for the women of this land. Thanks to the seeds of learning sown by Ewha, women in Korea have been able to affirm their identity as women and stand tall as full members of society, despite discrimination, prejudice, and the attempts to deny them basic human respect. A pioneer in higher education for women in Korea that has produced female leaders in every field, at every level, while contributing to academic and social development, Ewha now faces another turning point. With the fourth industrial revolution looming over us like an enormous wave, we find ourselves today surrounded by an environment that poses daunting challenges including a rapidly changing society and dramatically rising demand for new talent in converging, cross-disciplinary fields.
As it has for well over a century, Ewha will continue to take the road less traveled while working to build a brighter future. In order to realize this vision, Ewha will enhance its capacities for education and research based on academic empowerment, create a new model for university education inspired by a thirst for challenge, and strengthen community ethics on the basis of communication and trust. In this way, we will lead future society in the right direction. Starting with a single female student, Ewha has grown into a world-class women’s university with majors in every field including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and the arts. With pride in our hearts, knowing that “Ewha is like no other in the world,” we will stand at the forefront of our times and take on the challenges ahead as a female community of minds.

My Life in Korea:
An Olympic Experience Written by: Cassie Clifford | Image Credits: www.pyeongchang2018.com
F
ebruary was an exciting month for everyone all over the world, especially for South Koreans. The Winter Olympics was hosted in Pyeongchang and I had the opportunity to go because I’m living in Busan. I had my tickets purchased since September I went with a tour company because they had accommodations near the venue and had hired shuttle buses to bring us back and forth. I went to five round robin curling events, for both the men and women’s teams. If you don’t know what round robin is, it’s the games before playoffs (medal games). You may think that going alone wouldn’t be as fun, but it was a really great experience.
At each event I sported my Canadian flag and cheered on my country. Curling is my favourite sport and I am really happy to have seen it on an international level. I was even shown on the big screen at the beginning of a couple games! Unfortunately, Canada didn’t do very well. It was extremely surprising because we’re a top team but, things happen. The most unexpected thing happened with the Korean Women’s team. They won silver! They became a household name within two weeks. I am proud of them and what they accomplished. Curling was not well known here but since the team because so popular, many people are talking about it.
On one of the days I was in Gangneung (I was there for four), I went to the Canada Olympic House because I didn’t have any games that day. As I was watching the big screen, I saw the Curling Mixed Doubles gold medalists, Canadians John Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes. I was star struck. I highly respect them both. When I was standing in line for food, I was standing behind John. I said congratulations to him and he thanked me. I will never forget that moment. All in all, this Olympic experience was amazing. I met new friends, cheered with people from many different countries, and received incredible hospitality. I loved every single moment of it.
