resident Moon Jae-in and North Korean Chairman of the State Affairs Committee Kim Jong Un had their first historic meeting at the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in Panmunjeom on April 27. As Chairman Kim showed up at the Panmun Pavilion, President Moon approached Kim from the Freedom House on the southern side of Panmunjeom. The two leaders met in front of the MDL and shook hands. The two leaders held each other’s hands and stepped across the MDL to the north and then to the south with a smile. Escorted by President Moon, Chairman Kim entered South Korean territory. The two leaders posed for photos on the northern side with the Panmun Pavilion and on the southern side with the Freedom House, respectively. Greeted by two children with wreaths, the two leaders walked together to the official welcoming ceremony venue, accompanied by a traditional honor guard. They inspected the honor guard composed of a military marching band and an honor guard from the South Korean army, navy and air

force, a traditional honor guard and then a traditional marching band. The two leaders introduced official attendants from each of the two sides. At Chairman Kim’s suggestion, the two leaders even posed for photos with the official attendants in a friendly atmosphere. After Kim finished signing the guestbook, the two leaders posed for photos and inspected a painting of Bukhansan Mountain by Min jeong-ki. This work of art represents the invitation extended to Chairman Kim, who has become the first North Korean leader to ever step onto South Korean territory.

A joint statement that could completely change the future of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia was signed on April 27 at the conclusion of the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit.

Peace House and Panmunjeom. The joint statement contains measures for the establishment of peace and measures to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

President Moon Jae-in and North Korea’s Chairman of the State Affairs Committee Kim Jong Un signed the joint statement, dubbed the “Panmunjeom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula,” after holding the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit at the

After signing the joint statement, President Moon said, “We have confirmed that realizing a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula through complete denuclearization is our common goal. I clearly affirm today that the South and North will closely cooperate on complete denuclearization in the future.”

North Korean leader Kim said, “I came to Panmunjeom to open a path to a future where all Koreans can live at peace.”

permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. The matter must not be delayed any further.”

“We are firmly determined to open a new era in a peaceful land and discuss detailed measures for action,” he added.

The two leaders agreed to activate bilateral exchanges and to solve humanitarian issues as a long-term measure to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In particular, both sides declared an end to war this year, the year that marks the 65th year of the signing of the armistice treaty and to turn the treaty into a peace treaty.

The declaration said that, “These two leaders declare there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula, and South and North Korea will actively cooperate to establish a

They also vowed to actively pursue a trilateral meeting among South and North Korea and the U.S. or a four-side meeting among South, North Korea, the U.S. and China, in an effort to establish pace on the peninsula. President Moon agreed to visit Pyeongyang this fall so as to expand efforts for peace and prosperity and unification on the peninsula. Specifically, the statement included the statement that, “President Moon Jae-in agreed to visit Pyeongyang this fall.” The two Koreas also agreed to hold frequent meetings between military authorities, including the military talks at the rank of general in May, in order to immediately discuss and solve military issues that arise between them. The two sides also agreed to turn the areas around the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea into a maritime peace zone. The two Koreas agreed to endeavor to swiftly resolve humanitarian issues by resuming the

reunion program for separated families and collectively participate in international sports events such as the 2018 Asian Games. The declaration also says that South and North Korea will “establish a joint liaison office with resident representatives of both sides in the Gaeseong region to facilitate smooth exchanges and cooperation between the people.”

President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un jointly planted a pine tree originally grown in 1953, known as a bansong (반송), along a path on the southern side of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), at 4:30 p.m. on April 27. After shoveling some soil from both Hallasan and Baekdusan mountains onto the newly planted tree, the two leaders watered it with water from the Daedonggang and Hangang rivers. They then together pulled off a cover and revealed a stone plaque with the inscription “Peace and Prosperity Are Planted” and showing each of their signatures. Cheong Wa Dae said that the tree planting was suggested by the South and that the North accepted all of its

requests, such as the species of tree and the words on the plaque. After the planting, the two leaders walked along the Footbridge without any aides to where a signpost indicates the MDL. “This is literally a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders, and the bridge where they were strolling will hopefully become a historic site for ‘Peace, A New Start’,” said Cheong Wa Dae. After the brief one-on-one, they moved back to the Peace House in Panmunjeom to continue the summit. The leaders attended a farewell ceremony in front of the Peace House starting at 8:30 p.m., watch performances of the songs “Arirang” and “Spring of Hometown,” and also a video clip titled “A New Spring Enjoyed Together.”

My Life in Korea:

Tongyeong, the Napoli of Korea Written by: Cassie Clifford | Image Credits: http://exploreandexplore.blogspot.com

I

f you’re working in a foreign country, I don’t doubt that you’ve thought about traveling. It’s a bit difficult to go overseas if you don’t have a long weekend, or vacation. Fortunately, South Korea is small enough to cure that travel bug. Weekend trips are simple and I decided to check out Tongyeong, the Napoli of Korea, with my friend last month. We had this trip planned for a while but we didn’t anticipate rain until we looked at the weather forecast a few days before. It was a bit difficult to plan our day as most of the places we were going to were outdoors, but we didn’t let that ruin our day. We stayed at the Tongyeong Tourist Hotel which is very central to the main area. It was a 15 minute walk to “downtown”, if it’s even considered that. The first stop was Jungang Market (중앙시장). This was an easy choice as it has a roof so you’re protected from the rain. If you’ve ever been to Busan, it’s very similar to Jagalchi Market (작알치시장). My friend and I found a little restaurant in there and ate a dish that is very famous called 도지리 쑥 국, flounder soup. It was very good! After that, we checked out the Dongpirang ( 동피랑) Mural Village which is again, similar to another Busan attraction called Gamcheon Culture Village. Nearby were turtle ship “museums” which depict the ones that Yi Sun-Shin’s crew sailed in. For 2,000 won your ticket allowed you to see about 6 ships which showed its growth throughout the years. The next day, our only plan was to go to the Skyline Luge which is an area where you can

go downhill in a luge. It is a 15-20 minute “ride”. I highly recommend you buy tickets in advance like we did, so you can skip the ticket purchase line. After this, we returned to the “downtown” area and tried some famous honey bread (꿀빵). I highly recommend this! Tongyeong is a small town, but is near the water, which reminds me of my hometown. I know Koreans have incredible hospitality but here, I experienced the best. If we seemed like we were lost, people were quick to point us in the right direction, or help us with any questions we had. If you’re looking for a nice weekend trip, I highly recommend Tongyeong.
