“KCON 2018 NEW YORK DAZZLES MORE THAN 53,000 K-POP FANS AT THE PRUDENTIAL CENTER LAST JUNE 23 - 24.” Panels, Workshops and Two Mega-Concerts Highlighted a Jam-Packed Schedule of Events Dedicated to Every Aspect of Korean Pop Culture from Music to Food, Beauty and More

KCON USA, the world’s largest Korean culture convention and music festival, presented by Toyota, posted a record-setting attendance number in the East Coast. KCON 2018 NY took place June 23 and 24 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, and drew an audience of more than 53,000. The event also set a new record notching the highest livestream viewer counts on its platform, Mwave, for the event. This year, concert tickets to see K-pop artists EXID, fromis_9, Golden Child, Heize, NCT 127, Pentagon, Red Velvet, Stray Kids, Super Junior and Wanna One sold out in under 10

minutes, causing organizers to change the stage layout and open up more seats. These additional seats ultimately sold out as well. The convention continued to be a 360-degree immersion into Korean culture, with more than 90 programs including dance workshops, panels, performances and a showcase of the leading Korean food and beauty brands. KCON 2018 NY marked the largest K-beauty presence to date, with the top K-beauty brands Olive Young, LANEIGE, Mamonde and Innisfree under the Amore Pacific umbrella joining the K-Culture marketplace.

Fans who couldn’t make it to the convention were in luck as the event was livestreamed to audiences worldwide. Billboard livestreamed a special STAR Live Talk exclusively onto their YouTube and Facebook pages while the Red Carpet was livestreamed through KCON USA’s own Twitter account. The concerts streamed on Mwave sponsored by McDonald’s gathered more than 100,000 viewers, the highest number for KCON NY since its inauguration in 2015. These KCON 2018 NY livestreams garnered more than one million views in less than 24 hours.

Among the fans present was none other than NBA star Jeremy Lin, proving how K-pop’s fandom spreads far and wide. Lin made a surprising appearance on the red carpet and stopped to do a meet and greet with fans. KCON 2018 NY over delivered on programming this year with a wide variety of booths and panels for festival goers. This year’s lineup and program strengthened KCON’s value and identity as a true fan festival by expanding artist engagement programs and giving even more

power to the fans. In addition to multiple appearances by the artists on the show floor and in meet and greets, fans were invited to participate in producing the event through various interactive online events. Through Mwave’s series of KCON events, fan voting helped select some of the songs performed during the concerts and artists received awards created by the fans. Sponsors for KCON 2018 NY included Toyota, Amore Pacific, State Farm, McDonald’s, Verizon Fios, Olive Young,

Bibigo, Tour les Jours and Asiana Airlines. More than 80 local booths enjoyed thousands of patrons lined up for their food and merchandise which sold out on the first day of the event. On August 10 - 12, KCON 2018 USA will continue as it returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center and Staples Center. Concert tickets go on sale on July 11 and convention ticket sales open on July 13. Additional details including star-studded lineup are being announced in the coming weeks.

Shinee HINee was formed by SM Entertainment in 2008 composed of members Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin. The group’s Korean name, Shinee, is a new coined word and explained as a combination of shine meaning light, and the suffix ee, therefore meaning “one who receives the light”. They were introduced as a contemporary R&B boy group by their company with the goal of being trendsetters in all areas of music, fashion, and dance.

Korean music scene with follow-up singles “Ring Ding Dong” and “Lucifer”. “Ring Ding Dong” charted on top of several Korean music charts and gained popularity all over Asia.

The group made their debut on May 25, 2008 with their first EP, Replay on SBS’ Inkigayo with their single “Replay”. They further consolidated their popularity on the South

Over the years, the group have become renowned as one of K-pop’s stalwart boy bands who always put out complex, explorative dance-focused tunes.

Shinee is considered to be one of the best live vocal groups in K-pop and is known for their highly synchronized and complex dance routines, having been awarded the Best Dance Performance Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards three times in a row for their dance performances to “Sherlock”, “Dream Girl” and “View”.

In commemoration of their 10th anniversary, the quartet, following the passing of member Kim Jonghyun late last year, have released a three-part album - The Story of Light. The first part was released on May 28 with the single Good Evening. The second part of the trilogy was released on June 11 with the single I Want You. According to group, the second part of the album represents the group’s view of themselves, while the first part reflected what others think of the them. The third and last part of the album is fronted by the single Our Page and was released on June 25. The members sat down for an interview to share their thoughts on reaching their decade milestone in the industry. The group first reminisced about their debut, with Taemin sharing, “I think we really didn’t know anything. We debuted with massive fantasies of what it was like to be a celebrity, so we ran into a big wall of obstacles. As we overcame those [challenges] one by one, they all became good memories. Looking back now, the fact that we overcame those things, as well as the time we spent, seems really meaningful.” The members were then asked to choose the most memorable moment of the past 10 years. Minho answered first, saying, “Everything was memorable, but I remember our first debut performance the most, along with our first concert. It was our first concert, and we were pressed for time as we prepared, but we all personally had big expectations. We had dreamed of having our own solo concert, so we looked forward to it.”

Taemin remarked, “Rather than our debut, I remember the times we spent walking together from the practice room to our dorm in the winter, while we were preparing for debut.” He added, “The trivial moments stand out more in my memory, like when we bought things to eat together and shared them.” Onew said, “I remember when we started to attend events, in the car…,” before Taemin interjected, “When we fought,” causing everyone to laugh. Still laughing, Onew continued, “There were all sorts of conflicts, but I think the effort we put in trying to compromise was really enjoyable.” Additionally, SHINee answered the question of what 10 years meant to each of them. Taemin responded, “My school years.” He explained, “I became a trainee when I was in elementary school and spent the rest of my time together with my members, so my memories of my school years are with my members.” He added, “From now on, my life. [The fact that we are] like family is even bigger than my school years.” Onew replied, “I experienced a lot of things with the members and shared many things together with them, and we thought and communicated a lot, so [my answer is] learning.” Minho said, “There were a lot of things that happened during 10 years—we traveled around the entire world and put on a lot of performances. There were happy moments and sad moments, but we did everything together as a team, so it feels like a movie. But a movie that hasn’t ended yet.”

There were a lot of things that happened during 10 years — we traveled around the entire world and put on a lot of performances. There were happy moments and sad moments, but we did everything together as a team, so it feels like a movie. But a movie that hasn’t ended yet.

Key answered, “I’m not being negative, but [10 years] doesn’t feel like much. [The time] just naturally passed. [10 years] would be very significant if we’d had a really hard time and were wondering, ‘How did we make it to 10 years?’ But I don’t think it was like that. We somehow made it here, and it feels nice.” Finally, SHINee concluded by expressing their gratitude towards their fans. Onew shared, “To the many people who have waited for us

and loved us up until now, I really want to say: thank you, I was happy [during our times together], and I will continue to be happy. Thank you.” Taemin commented, “I think our fans are like a spotlight on the life that we shared together. They made us shine, they determined what kind of atmosphere we gave off, they made us stand out. It might be hard to see us in the dark, but they never lost that light and

continued to make us shine, so I want to thank them. I hope they continue to be a light that never goes out in the future.” Key said, “The fact that we can even have this interview right now is all thanks to SHINee World. This may seem like a fairly casual interview, but even the words ’10th anniversary’ and all the times we spent together [were made possible by our fans]. I hope we can continue to be people that

support each other in the future, as we depend on our fans and also lead them.” Lastly, Minho remarked, “Thank you so much for always giving us infinite love and affection. I think ‘thank you’ is the right expression. Thank you so much. We’ve become a lot more comfortable now and seen each other for a while, so I hope we can continue to make great memories and have a happier future. Thank you!” **Interview Translation Credits to Soompi

Because of You Music Composed by kpop fan AND AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE) RELEASE

T

he world’s first ever AI record production label, AIM has released a new song today. The digital single is a funky dance song titled “Because of you”. It was written and composed by Jeong Dong-su(ARKAY) from Produce 101 and a new rapper called Le.Ju’ce.

This song was made by the world’s first AI record label, AIM, which was announced through the showcase on February 27th. One of Jeong Dong-su’s fans used an AI program to first complete the composition and arrangement before artists added their own emotions to the music. This song is something that everyone can relate to because it is a dance song with a contagious rhythm that expresses how a man agonizes over the woman that he loves. The music video teaser shows a Hong Kong location and a variety of fresh content. This project is especially important in that it is the first ever song in which an artist’s fan directly participated in the composition by using an AI program, therefore making it a memorable gift. This project is internationally the first of its kind. Enterarts, a company that operates the AI label AIM, has released “Music is for all”, an AI record, produced together with Spica’s Kim Bo-hyung, Sohn A-reum, Jeong Dong-su, Highteen and more in Korea for the first time last February. EAST SEA The East Sea, known for its clear waters and expansive, white sandy beaches, is one of the most popular summer vacation spots in the nation. People come from far and wide to catch the stunning view of the sun rising over the East Sea, and most beaches in the area even hold an annual Sunrise Festival. Although these festivals only take place on New Year’s Day, the sight of the sun slowly peeking over the ocean’s horizon is a mesmerizing sight any day of the year.

Guryongpo Beach Guryongpo Beach is about 24 kilometers away from Pohang and 1.5 kilometers from Guryongpo-eup. Thanks to the gentle slope of the ocean floor and the clean sea water, Guryongpo Beach is a favorite vacation spot for swimming enthusiasts. The beach is also popular among fishermen, many of whom troll their lines in Yeongilman Bay.

SOKCHO Beach Sokcho Beach is well known for the picturesque pine trees that stand proudly along its white sandy coast. One of the perks of this particular beach is that there are many tourist attractions in the surrounding area, including Yeongnangho Lake and Seoraksan Mountain, one of Korea’s most famous mountains. Given the beach’s range of facilities (parking lots, campsites, etc.) and nearby accommodations, Sokcho Beach is a convenient place for a weekend trip. Visitors can even rent a fishing rod and go fishing at nearby Jodo Island, or walk towards the pier to get some fresh hoe (sliced raw fish) at one of the local fish markets. One of the biggest draws of Sokcho Beach is that it is located near Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, making it easy to find for even firsttime visitors. Festivals held at Sokcho Beach include the Sunrise Festival on January 1 of every year, and many events that take place during the beach swimming period between July and August for all visitors to enjoy.

Gyeongpo Beach Gyeongpo Beach is the largest beach on the east coast, and is only about a kilometer away from Gyeongpodae Pavilion, famous for its sunrise view. Perhaps the most striking characteristic of Gyeongpo Beach is its fine powdery sand, which is perfect for barefoot walks along the beach. There is also a beautiful pine tree forest that can be found nearby for leisure walks. Beach activities such as banana boating, jet skiing, and waterskiing are also well-favored. In addition, Gyeongpo Summer Music Festival is held every evening between the end of July and early August, featuring performances from famous bands and hiphop groups for a beachside club atmosphere.

NAKSAN Beach Naksan Beach is one of the top beaches in Gangwon-do, with a sandy beach stretching over 1,810 meters that draws in countless visitors each year. The beach runs along clean waters and is bordered by rows of pine trees. In addition to its natural beauty, Naksan Beach also has a variety of water leisure activities such as banana boating and jet skis for those looking for more adventure. The beach is also a top pick for those who are interested in Korea’s traditional culture, as it is close to Naksansa Temple and Uisangdae Pavilion, which was built to commemorate Great Monk Uisang. As an added bonus, the pavilion is also one of the best places in the area to view the sunrise.

WEST SEA Beaches along the West Sea are easily accessible from Seoul and are therefore extremely popular among citizens and travelers who may not have a lot of time on their hands. The beaches of the West Sea are also great places to catch the sunset, and many have tidal flats teeming with small marine life.

DAECHEON Beach Daecheon Beach is the largest beach on the west coast, and is known for its shallow and calm waters. The sand on the upper shores of Daecheon Beach is especially soft and easy to wash off because it is composed of tiny bits of eroded shells. Closer to the shoreline, the sand is hard packed. These two varieties of sand allow visitors to enjoy both leisure walks and sand scrubs. Daecheon Beach is also home to the annual summer festival, Boryeong Mud Festival. In the winter, the beach draws large crowds again as locals and tourists flock to the shores for the annual Sunset Festival.

EURWANGNI Beach Eurwangni Beach, located near Seoul and Incheon International Airport, is a popular beach, both for its gorgeous views and clean white sand. The beach’s shallow water also provides the perfect place for children to go swimming. Nearby amenities include a number of lavish resorts and restaurants serving fresh

seafood. Having dinner outside on the terrace of one of these restaurants is the perfect way to watch the final rays of sunlight as they disappear over the horizon! Beachgoers can also rent a fishing boat or rent a fishing rod to fish off the side of the pier. A variety of beach festivals take place at Eurwangi every summer.

MUCHANGPO Beach Muchangpo Beach is particularly famous for what is known as the “Moses Miracle, a natural phenomenon in which extreme tides reveal the seafloor for only a few short hours two or three days a month (around the 15th & 30th days of

the lunar calendar). The exposed sea floor makes a path about 1.5 km long that reaches all the way from the beach to Seokdaedo Island. The beach is also known for its scenic coastal drive, clusters of pine trees, and beautiful sunsets.

SOUTH SEA There are countless islands, and therefore beaches, along the southern coast of Korea. Each beach has its own unique style, meaning that there are almost limitless options for visitors willing to travel a little further from Korea’s capital. The South Sea is also home to Jeju Island, a favorite tourist site in Korea. Islands in the South Sea provide visitors with vastly different experiences from those along the east or west coast.

HAEUNDAE Beach Haeundae Beach is perhaps the most wellknown beach in the country. The waters are shallow and there is little change in tide making this beach perfect for swimming. The beach is famous for its views of the sunrise and moonrise as seen from Haewoljeong Pavilion. Haeundae’s Dalmaji-gil Road, which is located between Haeundae Beach and Songjeong Beach, is another recommended spot for a romantic view of the moonlight glistening off the water’s surface. Haeundae Beach is also extremely well known for its many cultural events and festivals that are held throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy Haeundae Sand Festival in summer; Busan International Film Festival in fall; and the New Year Festival and Polar Bear Swimming Contest in winter.

JUNGMUN Beach Jungmun Saekdal Beach inside of Jeju Jungmun Resort is a unique beach made of a gradient of black, white, red, and gray sand, as well as the famous black volcanic stone of Jeju Island. To the right of the sandy beach is a natural cave that was created by coastal erosion. Rare plants flourish near the cave, offering a convenient spot for some ecofocused sightseeing. The waves and tides can be rather rough along Jungmun, so while conditions are great for wind surfing, jet skiing and other water leisure activities, nonswimmers and young children are advised to stick close to the shoreline under the careful watch of lifeguards. Jungmun Resort is also home to an aquarium, Yeomiji Botanical Garden, Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, and a cluster of traditional houses of Jeju Island. Various events are held along the beach and in the complex throughout the year.

HYEOPJAE Beach Hyeopjae Beach is one of the best beaches on Jeju Island for swimmers, since the waters are shallow with no sudden drops. Tiny shells in the sand give the beach a silver sheen and make for a firm feel that is perfect for long walks along the water’s edge. Once you get into the water, you’ll be pleased to discover that the water is so pure that you can clearly see your toes! Hallim Park, a major tourist attraction, is only 5 minutes away on foot, and is well worth a visit. The park is landscaped with an abundance of subtropical plants and topiaries, and serves as a cool escape from the summer heat. A pleasant beach with plenty of space, Hyeopjae is all the more beautiful because of the black basalt rocks to one side and the view of Biyangdo Island stretching out in the distance.

NORTH KOREAN COLD NOODLE CRAZE

Article excerpt from Reuters, North Korean Cold Noodles a Hit as Historic Summit Warms Up Ties with South by Cynthia Kim, Haejin Choi https://reut.rs/2FnFC4q

L

ong lines formed outside restaurants in South Korea’s capital serving Pyongyang-style cold noodles after the dish took on a starring role at a historic summit between the North and South Korean leaders. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un brought a batch of the noodles for a dinner banquet on Friday, at the request of South Korean President Moon Jae-in. “We’ve made efforts to bring Pyongyang naengmyeon all the way from Pyongyang,” Kim said in opening remarks at the summit, referring to the North Korean capital. “So, hopefully, Mr President can enjoy Pyongyang naengmyeon from afar, though I suppose I mustn’t say ‘afar’ now,” Kim said with a chuckle.

Naengmyeon is noodles in a chilled meat broth, topped with beef brisket, pickled radish, sliced cucumbers and half a boiled egg. Moon had requested that the dish be on the menu at the banquet, and asked Kim if he could bring a takeaway batch from a famous Pyongyang restaurant, Okryu Gwan. North Korean officials were happy to oblige, the South’s presidential office said, adding that North Korea had even sent a chef from the restaurant to prepare the dish. Hungry South Koreans were clearly impressed and by midday #Pyongyang Naengmyeon was one of the top trending topics on Koreanlanguage Twitter while the lines at restaurants specializing in the dish, like the Eulmildae in a run-down part of Seoul, grew.

RECIPE For beef broth (makes about 10 cups - 4 servings) 1/2 pound 230 grams beef brisket (양지머리) 6 ounces Korean radish, mu (무) 1/2 medium onion 6 cloves of garlic 3 thin ginger slices about 1 inch round 2 large scallion white parts 1/2 teaspoon peppercorns 2 tablespoons soup soy sauce 1 teaspoon sugar salt to taste

For noodles (2 servings of naengmyeon noodles) 1 boiled egg cut into halves 1/2 Korean cucumber or 1 kirby cucumber 2 thin half-moon shape slices of a Korean pear optional Vinegar Hot mustard paste 1. In a large pot, bring the meat, onion, scallions, garlic, ginger and peppercorns to a boil, uncovered, in 14 cups of water. Reduce the heat to medium to medium low to keep it at medium boil, and skim off the scum. Continue to boil, covered, until the meat is tender, about 1 hour. Stir in soup soy sauce with 10 minutes remaining. Remove the meat and cool. Discard the vegetables. Cool the broth. 2. Pour 5 cups of the broth to a bowl (about 2-1/2 cups per serving). Stir in one teaspoon of sugar and salt to taste (about 1 teaspoon). You can add 1 or 2 cups of dongchimi broth, if available, and reduce the beef broth by the same amount. Also use less salt. Keep it in the freezer for an hour or two until the broth becomes slushy. Keep the remaining broth in the fridge or freezer for later use. 3. Cut the cucumber in half lengthwise. Thinly slice crosswise, lightly sprinkle with salt, and let it sit until the cucumber slices are wilted. Thinly slice the beef against the grain. Thinly slice the pear into a halfmoon shape if using. 4. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Prepare an ice bath while water is boiling. Cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Drain quickly and shock in the ice water to stop cooking. Drain and rinse again in icy cold water until the noodles are very cold. 5. Make two one-serving size mounds, placing in a colander to drain. 6. Place one serving of noodles in the middle of the serving bowl and top with the pickled radish, slices of beef, cucumber, and pear if using, and the egg half. Pour one half of the icy broth around the noodles. Repeat for another serving. Serve with vinegar and hot mustard paste on the side. Recipe from koreanbapsang.com
