CON LA 2018 kicked off August 10 at the Los Angeles Convention center for another weekend of amazing food, dancing, music and fun! Sponsored again by some of the biggest companies out there like McDonald’s, Asiana Airlines, Statefarm and Toyota KCON was able to host some of the biggest names in KPOP like WannaOne, Seventeen, Momoland, and Roy Kim. This years KCON brought in around 94,000 KPOP fans from around the world and even Ellen Degeneres herself even sent Kalen Allen out to film some reactions to KCON itself! As I walked around KCON’s convention floor, and food area, I caught Kalen himself, enjoying the dances, the food and the fans! The convention floor featured booths for attendees to try out makeup, nail care and even
skin care with also plenty of options to purchase. I decided to make my way to some of the K-Beauty booths, like Olive Young, where I found so many products for my skin type with the help of one of their product experts working the floor. One thing that has been at KCON over the years, but I did not experience until this year was test driving cars at the Toyota booth. Toyota gave attendees the chance to test drive 4 of their latest models of cars including the CHR, Camry, RAV4 and Prius. With each test drive, a attendee was able to choose a car, or randomly assigned a car, to which you could test drive the car around a few blocks. I was able to test drive the Camry which was a smooth ride and the interior was gorgeous! At certain times, Toyota even gave fans the chance to win meet and greets with certain
KPOP idols including Amber for F(X) and KCON artists Pentagon! The first night of performances took place on Saturday, August 21. The night opened with Momoland, followed by In2it, Mia, Golden Child, Davichi, Crush, Dynamic Duo, Twice and Ailee and WannaOne, with special stages by Twice, In2It, and Golden Child. For half of the line up, it was their first time performing on a KCON stage but it seemed to be a special night for Ailee being it was the first time she had performed in LA after attending KCON NY in 2016 as a U.S. native. The second night of performances was held on Sunday, August 22. The night opened up with Dreamcatcher, followed by Imfact, Pentagon, Chung Ha, Fromis_9, Roy Kim, NU’EST W, and Seventeen with special stages
by Dreamcatcher, Chung Ha, Fromis_9 and even Seventeen showcase performances by each of their unit groups. One of the performers also to take the stage for JunCurryAhn who, for the first year, took the KCON stage not just as an “opener” but part of the KCON lineup! What an amazing night it must have been for him.
It was a special night for NU’EST fans as it was the first time they had been on a KCON stage since the first ever KCON in 2012. Was I the only fan hoping for a reunion with Minyun?
Each year KCON continues to bring some of the biggest names in the KPOP industry to each of their cities and 2018 was no different. Who do you want to see hit the stage next?

C
huseok, Korean Thanksgiving Day, is one of the biggest and most important holidays in Korea. Family members from near and far come together to share food and stories and to give thanks to their ancestors. In 2018, Chuseok Day falls on September 24. As the day before and the day after are also part of the holiday, this year’s holiday period is from September 23 to 26, with September 26 being a replacement holiday for the 23rd falling on a Sunday. Many Koreans visit their hometowns to spend quality time with their family, as well as spend time with friends. The holiday also provides a good
opportunity to enjoy traditional cultural experiences throughout Korea. Let’s take a closer look at the traditional Korean holiday of Chuseok. Meaning of Chuseok Chuseok is one of Korea’s three major holidays, along with Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Dano (the 5th day of the 5th lunar month). Chuseok is also referred to as hangawi. Han means “big” and gawi means “the ides of the 8th lunar month or autumn.” According to the lunar calendar, the harvest moon, the largest full moon of the year, appears on the 15th day of the eighth month.
Traditions and Customs of Chuseok
Traditional Folk Games
In the morning of the day of Chuseok, family members gather at their homes to hold memorial services called charye in honor of their ancestors. Formal charye services are held twice a year: during Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Chuseok. During Chuseok’s charye, freshly harvested rice, alcohol and songpyeon (half-moon rice cakes) are prepared as an offering to the family’s ancestors. After the service, family members sit down together at the table to enjoy delicious food.
As Chuseok is a celebration of harvest and abundance, the holiday period is made joyful with various entertainment and folk games such as samulnori (traditional percussion quartette), talchum (mask dance), ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance), and ssireum (traditional Korean wrestling). Ganggangsullae is performed during Chusoek or Jeongwol Daeboreum (celebration of 15th day of the first lunar calendar). In this dance, women dressed in hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) join hands in a large circle and sing together on the night of the first full moon and on Chuseok. There are several stories about its origin. One of the most well-known stories says that the dance dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) when the Korean army used to dress the young women of the village in military uniforms and had them circle the mountains to give off the appearance that
Another traditional custom of Chuseok is seongmyo, or visit to the ancestral graves. Seongmyo is an old tradition that is still carried out to show respect and appreciation for family ancestors. During seongmyo, family members remove the weeds that have grown around the graves and pay respect to the deceased with a simple memorial service.
the Korean military was greater in number than it actually was from the enemy side. The Korean army enjoyed many victories thanks to this scare tactic. Ssireum, another significant traditional entertainment, is a oneon-one wrestling match held on a circular sand pit that requires strength and skills. Chuseok Foods A variety of foods are prepared during Chuseok to celebrate the bountiful harvest of the year, and one of the most significant foods that represent Chuseok is songpyeon. Songpyeon is prepared with rice powder that is kneaded into a size that is a little smaller than a golf ball, and then filled with sesame
seeds, beans, red beans, chestnuts, or other nutritious ingredients. When steaming the songpyeon, the rice cakes are layered with pine needles to add the delightful fragrance of pine. It is an old tradition for the entire family to make songpyeon together on the eve of Chuseok. An old Korean anecdote says that the person who makes beautifully shaped songpyeon will meet a good spouse or give birth to a beautiful baby. Other significant Chuseok foods include traditional liquor and jeon (Korean pancakes). Jeon are made by slicing fish, meat and vegetables and then lightly frying them in a batter of flour and eggs. They make a perfect pair with traditional Korean liquor.

RECIPE Credits: www.maangchi.com
INGREDIENTS • 2 cornish hens • ½ cup short grain rice (or glutinous rice) Rinsed and soaked in cold water for 1 hour. • 2 fresh ginseng roots, washed • 2 large dried jujubes, washed • 16 garlic cloves, washed and the tips are removed • 2 to 3 green onions, chopped • salt • ground black pepper
For the sesame dipping sauce: • 1 to 2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds • a pinch of ground black pepper • 1 to 2 tablespoons sesame oil For sweet sour soy dipping sauce: • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons white vinegar • 1 teaspoon honey (or sugar) • ½ a medium size onion, cut into chunks • 1 Jalapeno (or green chili pepper), chopped
2. Remove the giblets from the hens and rub them with salt all over to clean them nicely. Rinse under cold running water. 3. Put the hens on the cutting board, pat dry, and remove any extra fat around the body cavities with kitchen scissors. Cut off the tips of wings if you want. 4. Stuff each hen with rice, 1 ginseng, 1 jujube, and 8 garlic cloves. Put any leftover rice in the pot. 5. Place the hens into a heavy pot. Add 8 cups of cold water, cover, and cook over medium high heat for 30 minutes. 6. Turn down the heat to medium and cook another 40 minutes until the chicken, ginseng, and rice turn soft. Open up the pot from time to time and ladle some broth from the bottom over top of the chickens. If the broth evaporates too much, add more water. 7. Remove from the heat.
INSTRUCTIONS Make the dipping sauces: 1. Combine salt, sesame seeds, ground black pepper, and sesame oil in a small bowl and mix well. Set aside. 2. Combine soy sauce, vinegar, and honey (or sugar) in another bowl. Mix well with a spoon. Add onion and jalapeno. Set aside. Cook the chicken: 1. Strain the rice.
Serve: 1. Place each hen into 2 individual bowls and add the chicken and broth. Sprinkle with chopped green onion and ground black pepper. Serve with kimchi, the 2 kinds of dipping sauce, and a small bowl of salt on the side for seasoning. 2. If you serve them in earthenware pots, preheat the pots with a little water inside (about 2 tablespoons) and add the chicken and broth. Let them sit in on the heat until the samgyetang starts to sizzle. Then remove from the heat and sprinkle green onion over top and grind some black pepper. Serve hot with the dipping sauce, kimchi, and a small bowl of salt on the side for seasoning.
TYPHOON SEASON IN KOREA Source: http://www.arirang.com
H
eavy rainfall has flooded homes, roads and farms in central and southern parts of South Korea just a couple of days after Typhoon Soulik swept the country. According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, around 3,300 private properties and public facilities have been flooded across the country. The torrential downpours inundated streets and washed away vehicles, as well as forcing 510 flood victims to stay at temporary shelters. The government has shut down four roads, one railway and eight national parks.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said the heavy rain and floods have claimed three lives and injured four people as of August 24 while one person is still missing. With more than 40 millimeters of rainfall per hour in southern parts of South Korea from Thursday to Friday, some parts of Chungcheong-do and Jeolla-do provinces have seen about 200 millimeters of heavy rain in total. Japan and China protect South Korea from most of the area’s typhoons, but one or two still manage to get through each year during the summer months.
