BTS ADDRESED THE GLOBAL YOUTH DURING THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

BTS delivered an inspiring and encouraged message at a historic appearance at the 73rd UN General Assembly! On September 24 at 12 p.m. local time, UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) launched their new “Generation Unlimited” initiative at the 73rd UN General Assembly, as a part of the United Nation’s youth strategy, “Youth 2030.” The launch was headed by Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, UN Youth Envoy Jayathma Wickramanayake, UNICEF Executive

Director Henrietta Fore, and President of the World Bank Jim Yong Kim. “Generation Unlimited” is a new global partnership that is “dedicated to increasing opportunities and investments for children and young people aged 10 to 24” and encompasses the message, “our time, our turn, and our unlimited future.” As explained by UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore, it is to let the voices of young people be heard, and aims to have all youth, especially girls, in learning, training, or age-appropriate employment by the year 2030.

The first plans include a program in Argentina that connects students in rural areas with teachers through digital technology, a program in Bangladesh that provides training in various trades, and a job shadowing program for STEM fields in South Africa. Invited as UNICEF goodwill ambassadors, BTS gave a speech in honor of the launch with RM as the representative.

loving myself ” — and what he’s learned through his own life story. He then expressed, “Let’s all take one more step. We have learned to love ourselves. So now, I urge you to speak yourself. I’d like to ask all of you, ‘What is your name?’

He opened by introducing himself and expressed, “It is an incredible honor to be invited to an occasion with such significance for today’s generation.”

“What excites you and makes your heart beat? Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice. I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you are from, your skin color, your gender identity, just speak yourself. Find your name and find your voice by speaking yourself.”

RM proceeded to reflect on the message of BTS’s “Love Myself ” UNICEF campaign — “True love first begins with

BTS NORTH AMERICA LEG OF THE WORLD TOUR BTS World Tour: Love Yourself is the third worldwide concert tour headlined by South Korean boy band BTS to promote their Love Yourself series, including their Love Yourself: Her EP, Love Yourself: Tear studio album, and Love Yourself: Answer compilation album. Tickets went on sale May 5, 2018 for the Newark, Fort Worth, and Los Angeles shows and sold out in seconds. Due to the high demand, an additional date was added to the Los Angeles lineup, with tickets going on sale May 9, 2018. Tickets for the Oakland, Chicago, and Hamilton shows went on sale May 7, 2018. Tickets for the Hamilton shows sold out in just over an hour, with organizers for the Ontario stop, Core Entertainment, revealing they would have sold out faster if not for the strain put on Ticketmaster’s online system due to the

heavy influx of site traffic, the likes of which had not been seen for any ticketing held before. All fourteen stops completely sold out. A fifteenth and final stop of the North American leg, Citi Field in New York, was later announced on August 8, making BTS the first Korean artist to hold a concert at a stadium in the United States. Tickets for the show sold out in under ten minutes. On September 9, Variety announced that BTS, and singer Elton John, were the top touring acts of Fall 2018 in the United States. According to StubHub, BTS entered the “highest-selling act” and “best-selling shows” lists with the “highest-selling average sales per show position”. Yahoo Finance revealed that BTS were also the top-selling act and topselling show artist in Canada for Fall 2018.

BTS ON THE TONIGHT SHOW

STARRING JIMMY FALLON

Source: https://www.billboard.com Article by Tamar Herman

In a big week bookended by a speech at the UN and two sold-out concerts, BTS took some time to chat and dance with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. In his opening monologue, Fallon introduced BTS as “The biggest boy band on the planet,” and then, after a brief fan chant led by the ARMY sitting in the audience, the host showed a clip during which he and the seven members -- RM, J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, and Suga -- partook in the “Fortnite Dance Challenge.” The eight danced iconic moves such as the Electric Shuffle, The Worm and the Robot, and were then mimicked by characters from the video game. BTS also showed Fallon some of the moves to “Idol.” During the interview portion of the show, BTS’ members and Fallon talked about

their time in NYC, their tour, and speaking at the UN. “I was like so nervous,” said RM, regarding his speech. “I was holding up the paper and you could see my hands shaking.” He also talked about the message of “Speak Yourself.” “It’s mainly about speaking yourself, like, instead of letting other people speak for you ‘cause to truly love ourselves it’s important to firstly know who I am, and you know, where I’m from, and what my name is, what my voice is, kinda like that.” Fallon appeared wearing a BT21 headband featuring Chimmy, the character created by Jimin, resulting in a sweet interaction. Later on, the group performed their songs “Idol” and “I’m Fine.”

K-ARMYS VS I-ARMYS LANGUAGE While K-Armys would be able to watch the group’s various shows without any problem, I-Armys usually have to wait for subbed videos to be able to understand what’s going on.

EVENTS

ARMYS

Festivals and fansigns happen more frequent locally compared to overseas so K-Armys have more opportunities in seeing the group in such contextcompared I-Armys.

concerts

In local concerts, members would be more at ease speaking in their own language which leads to casual banters. While they try to adapt and incorporate traditions of the country they are in which is just as sweet.

EB’S WANNA KNOW

DIGITAL SINGLE ALBUM

EB from Produce 101’s season 1 released her digital single album, “Wanna know” on September 14th. EB has actively been releasing new music such as his digital single album, “Gon Lan Hae” featuring Jeong Dong-su (ARKAY) from Producer 101’s season 2 in August, and the amusement park’s theme song (LA LA LA) that was released on the 12th which used AI for the first time ever to assist with lyrics and composition. “Wanna know” is in a tropical-house song that describes the inner feelings of someone dealing with unrequited love. The music video which takes part in Seoul Land, gives off a late summer vibe. Unlike the chic and arrogant feeling of “Gon Lan Hae”, “Wanna know” has a more calm melody with sentimental lyrics that has a repetitive hook while showcasing a unique style of rap. This album is made up of lyrics that represent the innocent hearts of young people, who don’t know their feelings for one another yet.

MONSTER

CUPCAKES

Sources: citygirlsearching.com | timeout.com

Gyeongnidan has been home to this small cupcake shop since the beginning of the area’s popularity around 5 years ago. It’s got rough walls, furry spiders, huge model of E.T. sitting outside and all the small accessories crowing the space inside this extremely small store. By its look, it didn’t seem clear as to what I should expect, but once I found the cute, monstrous cupcakes displayed in the small counter, I couldn’t wait to find out which flavors each crazy decoration came with. The most popular menu here is the Red Velvet topped Hotel Transylvania’s very own fat mummy, the Tiramisu decorated with an RIP grave and lastly the Apple Cinnamon holding a jack-o-lantern the top. The one I was most pleased with is the Halloween special Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter cupcake. Its artificialness you’d feel at your first bite may lower your expectation, but once you dig in, the mixture of the the bread’s soft texture and the flavorful icing is a delightful surprise. Perfectly sweetened, the cupcakes make a fun dessert for kids while adults would also appreciate the delicate flavors within.

ABANDONED PLACES Source: eastasy.com

GONJIAM PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL The Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital in Gwangju is one of the better known abandoned spots in South Korea. The place is heavily barricaded but around a thousand ghost hunters, tourists and photographers break inside every year. The place has the aesthetics of a longabandoned building although it was only deserted in the late 1990s. Many stories are being circulated around regarding the reason. One popular rumor is that there were sudden, inexplicable deaths among patients and staffs for a span of 10 years, and that a mad doctor is involved. Their ghosts are said to haunt the corridors that are filled with scribbles and graffiti and rooms full of rusted machines and worn out mattresses. However, those who are more logical speculates sanitary problems and economic downturns, causing the owner to escape overseas without leaving documentation about the premise.

YONGMA LAND Yongma land was a hotspot for couples and families in the 80s. However, ever since Lotte World opened people started to lose interest in this small-scale amusement park. It officially ceased operation in 2011 and has since been left to be reclaimed by nature. Vines and weed adorn the many colourful structures such as bumper cars and the Viking ship, giving the place a nostalgic vibe as if frozen in time. The park has since been bought by someone who let visitors roam around inside for a fee of 5000 won. They will even run the merry-goround which is still working on request, and its light dazzles beautifully at night. Yongma land is now a popular spot for photographers and tourists alike. Beware though, as rumors has it that a little girl in white wanders there alone, looking for her mother.

YEONGDEOK HOUSE

Yeongdeok is famous for its seafood, especially the renowned snow crab. However, it also boasts a haunted house on top of the hill that is said to be one of the scariest locations in South Korea. There are two different sayings as to why the house is haunted. The first one says that it is built on top of a mass grave of soldiers from a failed beach landing. The second one says that the house owner died in a very mysterious car crash. Both stories share one similarity: that whoever moves into that house will die. It is only a simple two story

building with a small basement room, and many people have reported going without any paranormal experience. However, once playing back the audio tracks they recorded there, they will here mysterious voices that weren’t heard at that time. That happened when National Geographic filmed one episode of their paranormal exploration show, ‘I Wouldn’t Go in There’. Some said that it’s because of a radio antenna nearby, but who knows? The locals are immensely terrified at that place so finding it by yourself can be quite a challenge.

neulbom garden Neulbom Garden is said to have been a popular restaurant around 20 years back. However, it suddenly shut down due to 2 successive tragedies. The restaurant owner’s daughter got into a road accident that snapped her neck and left her in a vegetative state. Unable to cope with the stress, the restaurant owner committed suicide soon after. Years later, the abandoned building was bought by a rich person who used it to open another restaurant. Things started getting strange with the owner, employees and customers, as the doors would open and shut by themselves and all the orders somehow messed up. The boss, who could not handle the situation hid in the kitchen doing the dishes, leaving his employee to deal with everything. He is also said to have gone around clubbing customers in their head if he sees them playing with their food. Anyway, this restaurant was soon shut down too and the place is said to be so haunted that you can still hear the dishes being washed at night.

yeonpyeong island Source: travelog.me

Yeonpyeong Island has been a disputed territory since the 50s. Sitting nearly exactly on the border between North and South Korea, this island has been the victim of numerous attacks, the largest one from the North left most of the island abandoned as its residents fled to the South for fear of being shot. The island now has plenty of abandoned buildings, most of which have bullet holes in the walls. There haven’t been any notorious spirit sightings, but there are certainly plenty of ghost towns.

DOKKAEBI ROAD Source: https://theculturetrip.com

Between Jeju City and Hallasan National Park lies Dokkaebi Road, also known as the ‘Mysterious Road’ or the ‘Ghost Road’. At first sight, it looks just like an ordinary road — but if you try to roll a ball downhill, it will reverse and go up the slope. Other objects, liquids and vehicles will do the same. Don’t get too freaked out, however; it’s not supernatural, but a natural optical illusion. Although the road appears to slope uphill, it’s actually going in the opposite direction.

INDEPENDEnCE

GATE

Built after the Sino-Japanese War to symbolize Korea’s independence, the gate has actually garnered a rather spooky Korean myth. While the gate is meant to celebrate Korea, there are reports of spirits lurking around the monument waiting to cut the hair of any Korean that walks under it (which according to Korean tradition of growing long hair, its a huge insult) While most Koreans today do not have to worry about their long locks being chopped off, its still has a bad reputation.

yongin korean

folk village

The Korean Folk Village located in Yongin, Gyeonggido is known for one particular kind of ghost. If you’re familiar with Korean folklore, this creepy spirit is called a gwishin, specifically a cheonyeo gwishin, or a virgin ghost. These are ghosts of young women who died without being married, which was a disgrace for Korean women in the past. The wander the night with long black hair and long white dresses, generally freaking out anyone who sees them. This village has numerous sighting reported.
