Interview

Park Yuri Interview and Photography by Lydia

“Hello, Hallyu Magazine, I am Esteem model, Park Yuri, I came to Korea eight years ago, from Russia. About my personality, sometimes I’m fun; sometimes I’m very boring, it depends on situation and people that is around me. The main reason I came to Korea was to study at the university because Korea is one of the best countries for study and with good universities.”

Hallyu Magazine: Tell us a fun story about working as a model in Korea Park Yuri: I didn’t speak Korean very well at first. And during the shooting one of the staff asked me “Do you want tea or coffee?” and I just answered ‘yes’. I didn’t know what he was asking, so I didn’t know how to answer, so I just said ‘yes, yes’. That was really weird and very awkward. HM: Do you still have the same problem with the Korean language now? PY: I can speak Russian, English and Korean, but for now I speak Korean better than English, because I practice it every day. I didn’t speak English for one year already.

HM: How about Korean fans? PY: Yes, I have Korean fans too, they do send me the presents sometimes. I just got one yesterday. And because I am from Russia, my fan went to Russia and sent to me a lot of chocolates, album and Russian dolls, it was really sweet. HM: What is your favorite style and brand? PY: I have a lot of styles, because I don’t want to follow only one style. If you are modelling, I think you have to follow all types of style. For me, my favurite brand is Balmain.

HM: In what language do you speak with your fans? PY: I have a lot of Russian and Korean fans, so I used to speak with them in Russian and Korean.

HM: What was your favorite photoshoot? PY: It was actually my first photoshoot, my debut - it was for Vogue, a girl’s magazine. It was last September 2015. It was my first photoshoot and I had a lot of fun. And I can say it was the first time I started to feel like I am a model.

HM: Do you get recognized on the streets? PY: Yes, especially when I go to Hongdae street, people come to me and say ‘Oh, I saw you on that TV show’ or something else and ask me to have picture with them. And I am really happy at that time.

HM: Do you have any projects for the future? PY: I am going to start a Youtube channel, maybe in a month. I will upload there my life, so people can know me. It is going to be in 3 languages: Russian, English and Korean for my fans.

HM: Is your Korean or international fandom bigger? PY: If you had a look in instagram, you will see I have fans from Bangkok, Thailand and from Russia. So my international fandom is bigger.

HM: Which style do you feel most comfortable portraying as a model and which style best fitted you for you personality? PY: I have a lot of fun when I am shooting with childish style, being cute or dancing with no exact concept, just doing whatever I want.

Interview with Park Yuri

HM: Do you feel like a famous person in Korea or in Russia? PY: I don’t have this feeling. I am just a model. I just work hard, but I don’t think I am famous. HM: At your work you can meet a lot of famous people, what do your friends think about it, do they feel jealous or something? PY: I actually got a lot of supports from my friends. And I didn’t change a lot, when I became a model. I have fun and talk with them about myself, and I don’t have a big ego. And when I meet some celebrities I never tell them like “I met a celebrity” or something like this. HM: Do you follow any diet plans or are there things you prefer to avoid? PY: I actually don’t do anything. I used to be a professional swimmer before modelling. I was in Russian swim team. I used to get ready for Olympics, but I got sick so I couldn’t do it and I finished my career. It was 7 years ago. But I swim sometimes and do some exercise at home, but I don’t do any diet. HM: What is your favorite meal? PY: I love the food that my Mom makes for me. Instead of restaurants and cafes I always prefer my Mom’s food. It can be Korean or Russian food.

HM: Do you watch any drama or TV shows? PY: I don’t watch TV, because I think it is wasting time for me. Instead, I prefer to spend my time doing my hobbies. Sometimes I watch TV, but only TV shows with me, to see how I did. HM: What is your hobby? PY: When I was a child, my Mom told me you have to do a lot of hobbies and study a lot. So from that time I started to study saxophone, drums and guitar and went to swimming. Even now, I still have a lot of hobbies. Sometimes I write the lyrics for rap and take pictures. Before modelling, I did photoshoots for some magazines. So I was a professional photographer and I became a model because I did photoshoots for myself using the timer. Also I like shooting videos, producing sometimes, and DJ-ing. HM: Since you write lyrics for rap, do you have any songs that has already been released or is there something new coming out soon? PY: I do have 5 or 6 songs in soundcloud and new song is coming soon too HM: What is your favorite music genre? PY: Rock and Hip Hop. HM: Tell us about one of your favorite singers. PY: Eminem, he is my favorite rapper since I was in middle school. And I like his life, he has three daughters and is

really a good father. But regarding my lyrics for rap, 21 Savage fits my style more. HM: Would you say there is a difference between working as a foreign model or a Korean model here? PY: I have foreign friends, who are models. They always tell me that it is hard to work here as a model. Because I work in Korean agency I don’t know the difference. HM: What are your thoughts about the model industry in Korea, how is it different from the other countries you been to? PY: I never tried to work in other countries, only Thailand, but I think it is the same. HM: How much time is usually left for your personal life? PY: I actually have a lot of time for my personal time. I don’t know how it was before, but these days, model work is not so busy. HM: Is there any diference between working as a freelance model versus working under an agency? PY: There are a lot of differences, a lot of advantages and disadvantages. When you work by yourself like a freelance model, you have to find work by yourself. And when at work they ask you what is your agency, and you answer ‘Esteem’, it is very high level agency, like a top agency. But if you say I am freelance model, they keep asking you – is it hard to work like that? But agency name is like a brand for you.

Interview with Park Yuri

What would be your advice to beginner and new models? “Don’t be shy - it is a big advice for a model. And during the audition, agency can ask you to show what you can. Show everything what you can do, tell everything what you can do, try to speak in all languages you can. But the most important is not to be shy.”

HM: Do you think you still have a lot to learn as a model? PY: I met a lot of models that actually work as a model for 20 or more years. Every time I see them, it dawns to me how I still have a long way to go and I have a lot to study. I feel like a beginner, and even my three years is very short time for a model. There are a lot of models that have worked in the agency for ten or more years, and they still work hard. HM: Do you enjoy being on the set? PY: I don’t think modelling is work for me; it is more like a hobby. And when you think that is a hobby you more enjoy this work. HM: What is the most important thing for you now? PY: It would be my studies. I have only one year left. HM: Is it difficult to study and work at the same time? PY: It is really hard! I don’t have time for study and sometimes I don’t have time for work. But I try my best. Only once I was really late for the class. But professor said “Oh! I saw you on the TV show!”, and I said ‘I am really sorry, that I am late. Is it absence? ’, but he asked ‘Is it because of photoshoot?’ and I answered ‘yes’ and he said “It is ok, don’t worry”. I was really happy! HM: Do your agency care about you studies at the university? PY: Yes, they do. They always ask me do I have time for this photoshoot or I have class. And they try to schedule everything with my lessons.

HM: Can you list 3 countries that you want to visit the most? PY: I want to visit the center of fashion, France. And Italy and USA. HM: Do you want to go there for the projects to work or just like a tourist? PY: Yes, I do want to go there for the projects. It will be really good! My agency tries to push me there, but because of visa problems I cannot go there now. But soon I am going to get a citizenship visa and there will be no problem anymore.

HM: Who is your Icon as a model? PY: Soo Joo is my icon and favorite model. Because of her I wanted to become a model. HM: Who or what is your inspiration? PY: For lifestyle, it would be my father. He is my role model. I feel really proud that I have him; I can always ask him everything and learn from him how to live. And my Mom is my life and love. They are both are really important for me and they are my inspiration for life. HM: How do you see yourself in five or ten years? PY: I try to see myself much bigger than now, not only as a model, but an entertainer. You cannot be a model forever, you can try to be an actor or singer, and there are a lot of things you can do these days. I want to be an entertainer, but I am not sure for now.

TOKYO TARAREBA GIRLS

“I spent my precious youth making “tarareba” (when-if) excuses, and now it’s gone…” The hit comic series that saw over 1.8 million copies printed throughout Japan has now been remade into a drama! Rinko Kamata, 30 years old, is unmarried and doesn’t even have a boyfriend. Her job: (struggling) screenwriter. With both her career and love life not going well, Rinko indulges herself in a string of “Girls Night Out” shindigs with close friends Kaori and Koyuki. “When I become pretty, I’m sure an even better guy will come along!” “If I fall in love

with the guy, then I can marry him!” Just when the ladies were absorbed in their lively “tarareba” (when-if) conversation, a young, blonde and handsome man suddenly shows up and scolds them “You tarareba women!” Just like that, the ladies are given a harsh reality check. “I thought that if I really wanted it, I could get the ideal career and love life.” “Are we no longer ‘girls’?” Such was the painful truth that smacked them in the face. Women across the generations will surely relate to these ladies, who search for happiness despite all the struggles in life.

SWIM! “I want to swim faster!” That’s the only thought in the minds of these high school jocks. Shuhei, Daiki and Reo are obsessed with only one thing--swimming. They pour their heart and soul into passing the entrance exam for Ryuho High School, a private academy renowned for its top-notch swim team. In the process, they end up hurting each other’s feelings. One guy gets into Ryuho, but the other two wind up at Higashigaoka High School, where the swim team is on the brink of shutting down. Just when it seemed like the three guys would never hang out again, Kawasaki, a swimmer they all admire, becomes the coach of the Higashigaoka High School swim team. Things are just about to get interesting... The Higashigaoka High School swim team shrank drastically after several seniors graduated. Juniors Shuhei, the captain who looks after his teammates like an older brother, Daiki, a pure and innocent guy who doesn’t say much, and Haruyoshi Koganei,

who is macho in the inside but actually quite girly, need to find five new swimmers to prevent being kicked out of the team. Frantic, they go on a recruiting frenzy. Meanwhile, the team at Ryuho, a regular fixture at the national high school championships, is being led by the hardworking Homare Nishina. Teammates Ichitora Jingu, a genius in the water, an equally-talented Reo Fujikawa, and the friendlyyet-speedy Mitsuki Taira, all join him as they train tirelessly day and night to become the national champions. Things were looking better at Higashigaoka as only two new guys were needed to save the team. Yuta Taki is a bluntly honest experienced swimmer and Daniel Harada is a handsome princely guy (when he keeps his mouth shut) who can’t swim at all! What’s more, Ryoya Kawasaki, a former national champion, signs up to coach the team. Just what will happen when you assign an iconic coach to watch over a bunch of guys with colorful characters?!

PRETTY PROOFREADER

Etsuko’s lifelong dream is to become an editor for a fashion magazine. She’s applied numerous times while taking on part-time jobs to make ends meet, but to no avail. Then finally, she bags an offer from a large publishing house, only to find out that she’s been assigned to the least glamorous department in the company--the Proofreading Department! Not easily discouraged, Etsuko dons a flashy ensemble and heads off to her proofreading job.

Etsuko is the type of woman who isn’t satisfied unless she meticulously investigates every single issue, and it reflects on her unique proofreading style, which is so bold and daring that is leads to one trouble after another! Whether it’s forcing her way into uncharted places that are difficult to enter, or infiltrating a crime scene that’s being investigated by a tabloid so she can get the facts herself, Etsuko goes all-out to take proofreading to new dimensions!

YOUR HOME IS MY BUSINESS! The best real estate agent will do anything for her clients to close the sale! Machi Sangenya (Keiko Kitagawa) is a 30-yearold real estate professional who takes her job very seriously. She is no nonsense and doesn’t crack a smile when there is work to be done. Almost every real estate deal has unforeseen issues and obstacles that threaten to derail the transaction, but Machi has a fail-proof way of closing 100 percent of her sales. How is that possible? Machi throws

herself into the lives of all her clients and their families. Whatever issue, problem or conflict arises with her clients, Machi is right there to get to the heart of it and resolve it. Her clients then happily go through with the purchase of the home! Are there any clients that Machi can’t handle? “Your Home Is My Business” is a 2016 Japanese television series directed by Ryuichi Inomata and Noriyoshi Sakuma. It was followed by the sequel “Your Home is My Business! Returns” (2017).

MAY I BLACKMAIL YOU? “Blackmailer”— the shady hero who saves people using evil tactics vs The ultimate goody two-shoes “princess girlfriend” “May I blackmail you?” It all started with a suspicious video that was suddenly sent to her house. In it, a masked man who calls himself “Blackmailer” facetiously claims that he has taken her “boyfriend” hostage. If his life is precious to her, she needs to pay ransom to save him. “But wait a minute... I’ve never even had a boyfriend,” she recalls. This bizarre case of mistaken identity sparks the beginning of fun-filled days for “Blackmailer” Senkawa, “girlfriend material goody two-shoes” Mio, and their friends. Using blackmail to solve problems, “Blackmailer” is a “professional villain” who takes on cases that the

police and investigators can’t handle. When not busy being a “hero of darkness” who uses “evil” to save people, he’s an easy-to-flatter sedentary guy with an odd fashion sense. He loves to make silly jokes, but nobody pays him any attention. The “princess,” on the other hand, is a college student who has never had a boyfriend. Although she lives a simple life, she’s actually a super rich kid who can easily throw down hundreds of thousands of dollars whenever she wants. Sweet and kind, she’s definitely girlfriend material. The slightest bit of evil bothers her, and she often sticks her nose into the problems of strangers. Two polar opposites who should have never crossed paths end up getting involved in numerous cases.
