KCONLA Relieve 2019 the Moments Written by: June Saladino Photos by CJ ENM
A
nother KCON has come and gone, and this year was definitely not a disappointment. KCON had its 7th successful year, it’s 4th year, in Downtown LA at Staples Center and the LA Convention Center. Being one of the biggest KPOP events “for the fans”, KCON extended their LA takeover from three, to four days, with the addition of a Rookies Showcase on top of Klub KCON and two jampacked concerts. It wasn’t smooth sailing this year with two of the artists, ONEUS and Chung Ha, not being able to attend due to VISA issues, and Mamamoo member, Wheein, being unable to attend due to health concerns, however, there were still other amazing performances from groups like ATEEZ, Loona, N. Flying, and KCON, vets Seventeen. With so many rookie groups in attendance this year, KCON put together a Rookie Showcase for the first time. AB6IX, ATEEZ and Loona greeted their fans for the first time at the showcase where hosts Danny Lim and Kevin Wu had each member introduce themselves as well as playing games to determine when the groups performed. The convention ran from Thursday to Sunday and consisted of continuous dance works shops, booths that specialize in Korean beauty, music and merchandise booths, the Flower Boy Cafe, and of course, the KCON stage. A lot of these booths were returning brands and of course, sponsoring booths,
were scattered everywhere, however, there were a couple of things that stood out. The K-Pop restaurant, was a new addition to this year’s convention floor and taught its audience about Korean food. Luckily for attendees, this allowed some of this year’s idol groups to show some of their cooking skills to their fans with AB6IX, Ateez and N.Flying making appearances. N.Flying, a highly anticipated group at KCON since it was one of their, if not their first, time in the States, showed their fans how they would make a lunch box. Another first this year was the addition of a female at the Flower Boy Cafe. Sharron joined as the first “Flower Girl” at the cafe which allowed attendees to “escape from the summer heat at KCON LA with cool beverages and flower boys!” (kconusa.com). Many of the KPOP idols that attended this year were given the chance to be on the convention floor to meet their fans. Some of the sponsoring booths, including this year’s Beauty Stage, had idol groups come to meet their fans through meet and greets and Q n As, but the KCON stage allowed groups AB6IX, SF9, Stray Kids and VeriVery the chance for non KCON attendees to see their idols live via the ET Live, live stream. This was another first at KCON, and was very successful. Every year, KCON continues to have huge sponsors, including Asiana Airlines, Toyota, and Olive Young, but if you walked the convention floor, you couldn’t miss the
massive McDonald’s stand handing out a free small sample of their famous french fries, and soft serve. Bibigo and Melona joined in on the free samples along with Tous les Jours. The weekend was finished off with two concerts, one on Saturday and another on Sunday. Saturday’s show kicked off with performances from two potential groups of rookie idols, the International Team and the Klass team, from the KPOP project, World Klass. Both groups did covers of top hits with the International Team performing a cover of Billie Eilishe’s “Bad Guy” and Justin Beiber’s “What Do You Mean”. At the end of the performances, the audience was asked to vote for their favorite cover and it would be announced on an episode of the show. Those that voted, were given the chance to attend a meet and greet of the two groups. Saturday’s concert officially began with a special stage by groups ATEEZ, who covered “Very Good” by Block B, and IZ*ONE, who covered “Fire” by BTS. The main special MCs of the night were Aaron and Ren of NU’EST. AB6IX were the first group to perform for the night, followed by a special stage of two members of IZ*ONE. Momoland and ATEEZ were up next before Aaron and Ren did something special for a couple of fans in the audience. One was a NU’EST fan, and the other was a SF9 fan. When the SF9 fan was asked who her favorite member of the group was, she responded with Taeyang. To her surprise, Taeyang
appeared on the big screen with a special shout out to her. Super rookie group, Loona, was the next group to take the stage, followed by SF9, and IZ*ONE, with NU’EST closing out the night.
For Sunday’s concert, each performer of the night did a short intro, with a collab stage by Stray Kids and N.Flying. VeriVery officially kicked off the concert followed by rookie super group, ITZY. N.Flying took the stage next and even performed their amazing Queen melody, followed by a special stage performance of the hit song, “Speechless”, from the live action Aladdin movie by Mamamoo’s very own, Solar. Fromis_9 was the next to perform followed by Stray Kids and then the performance sub unit of Seventeen. Mamamoo took to the stage next, with Seventeen closing out the night. Sunday’s concert was the official closing of KCON, but this year they also added an “After Party” which included an appearance by ATEEZ. This year a lot of new additions were added, giving fans a better opportunity to see some of their favorites whether it was on stage, the convention floor or live streams. With the continuous growth of KPOP world wide, events like KCON will continue to grow as well. Until next year KCON!

traditional korean holiday of bountiful harvest
Chuseok Info from: http://english.visitkorea.or.kr
Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving Day, is one of the biggest and most important holidays in Korea. Family members from near and far come together to share food and stories and to give thanks to their ancestors. In 2019, Chuseok Day falls on September 13. As the day before and the day after are also part of the holiday, this year’s holiday period is from September 12 to 14. Many Koreans visit their hometowns to spend quality time with their family. The holiday also
provides a good opportunity to experience traditional culture throughout Korea. Chuseok is one of Korea’s three major holidays, along with Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Dano (the 5th day of the 5th lunar month). Chuseok is also referred to as hangawi. Han means “big” and gawi means “the ides of the 8th lunar month or autumn.” According to the lunar calendar, the harvest moon, the largest full moon of the year, appears on the 15th day of the eighth month.

Chuseok Table Recipe SONGPYEON A must-have Chuseok delicacy is songpyeon (송편) – small half-moon shaped rice cakes (tteok). They are stuffed with sweet fillings, such as sesame seeds and mung beans, and steamed on a bed of pine needles. The name songpyeon stems from the use of pine needles (“song” in “songpyeon” means pine tree). Songpyeon is made with short grain rice powder (쌀가루), not glutenous (sweet rice) powder (찹쌀가루). Traditionally, short grain rice is soaked overnight and drained before being ground into fine powder in a gristmill. The rice powder is mixed with boiling hot water and kneaded into soft dough. The longer you knead, the chewier the texture of the rice cake will be. Songpyeon dough is typically flavored and colored with natural ingredients such as mugwort, kabocha, and dried fruit powders.
Recipe from: koreanbapsang.com
INGREDIENTS: 2-pound bag of frozen rice powder (labeled 쌀가루 or 쌀떡가루) yields a little more than 6 cups, which is sufficient for 3 of the different color batches shown below. The frozen rice powder for rice cakes is usually pre-salted. (Be aware that the moist content of the powder varies depending on the brand.) 4 to 5 ounces pine needles, rinsed 2 – 3 times and air or pat dry (optional) about 1 tablespoon sesame oil
Flavor/Color Options: Basic (white) dough 2 cups of frozen rice powder, thawed to room temperature 4 tablespoons plus 1 or 2 teaspoons boiling hot water
Roughly grind the sesame seeds in a grinder or blender. Add the sugar, honey and pinch of salt. Mix everything together well. Dough:
Green dough 2 cups of frozen rice powder, thawed to room temperature 2 tablespoons mugwort (ssuk garu/쑥가루) (or matcha/green tea powder) 5 tablespoons plus 1 or 2 teaspoons boiling hot water
For each type of dough, sift the rice powder into a bowl. Prepare the flavoring and liquid ingredients (water/juice/kabocha) for each selected color of dough. Add the specified amount of the solid and/ or liquid (making sure it’s boiling hot) to the rice powder, quickly stirring them in with a spoon.
Yellow dough 2 cups of frozen rice powder, thawed to room temperature 1/3 cup cooked steaming hot kabocha* (danhobak/ 단호박) 1 tablespoon plus 1 or 2 teaspoons boiling hot water (*1/2 small kabocha steamed in microwave for about 5 minutes)
Knead, pressing and stretching with the heel of the hand. Fold and rotate the dough. Repeat the kneading process for at least 5 minutes. (If the dough sticks to your hands or the bowl after some kneading, it’s too wet. Add more rice powder in 1 tablespoon increments. If the dough breaks easily or is too stiff, it’s too dry. Add more boiling hot water in 1 teaspoon increments.)
Purple dough 2 cups of frozen rice powder, thawed to room temperature 4 tablespoons plus 1 or 2 teaspoons boiling hot blueberry juice (1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries finely pureed with 1/2 cup water, strained and boiled)
Cover the dough with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes.
Pink dough 2 cups of frozen rice powder, thawed to room temperature 4 tablespoons raspberry juice (1/2 cup fresh or frozen raspberries finely pureed with 1/2 cup water, strained, and boiled)
To assemble, tear off a small piece of the dough enough to make roughly 1-inch ball. Roll tightly between your palms to shape a ball.
Filling: 1/2 cup roasted sesame seeds 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to your taste) 1 tablespoon honey pinch salt
Assemble:
Make a well in the ball by pressing into it with your thumb, and press outwards, with both of your thumbs, on the inside walls of the well to slightly expand the opening. Place 1/2 teaspoon of the filling in the well. Seal tightly by squeezing the edges together. Squeeze the whole rice cake lightly in your palm to firm it up. Shape it to resemble a half moon. Repeat until all the dough/filling is used.
Steam & FinIsh: Boil water in a steamer. Place a thin layer of pine needles or a damp kitchen cloth on the steamer insert. Boil the water over high heat. When it starts to steam, place the rice cakes on the steamer insert without the pieces touching one another. Cover with a thin layer of pine needles, if available. Cover and steam for about 20 minutes. Prepare a big bowl of cold water. Using a longhanded spoon or tong, remove the rice cakes from the steamer. Drop them in the cold water for a quick rinse, removing all the pine needles. Transfer the rice cakes to a colander to drain. Lightly coat your hands with the sesame oil and rub the oil on the rice cakes in batches. Serve warm or at room temperature
MODEUMJEON Jeon is a collective term that refers to panfried battered food in Korean cuisine. There are typically two types of jeon. The first type is pancake-like dishes, such as pajeon, buchujeon, gamjajeon and kimchijeon. For these, all the main ingredients are mixed in with flour batter and then pan fried into a crispy pancake.
INGREDIENTS:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1 zucchini 10 shrimp medium to large 1/2 pound flounder or cod fillet or any white fish salt and pepper 3 eggs beaten 1/2 cup flour vegetable or canola oil for pan frying
Slice the zucchini into 1/3-inch disks. Lightly salt both sides and set aside at least for 20 minutes. Pat dry excess water with a paper towel.
Dipping sauce: 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon rice vinegar pinch pepper
Peel and devein the shrimp, keeping the tail on. Rinse and pat dry with a paper towel. Butterfly the shrimp by cutting along the curved back. Do not cut through. Open the shrimp halves and remove the vein. Lightly sprinkle salt and pepper over both sides. Set aside at least for 15 minutes. Rinse fish and pat dry with a paper towel. Cut the fish fillet into 1/2-inch thick, 2-inch long slices by running the knife diagonally through the fillet. Lightly sprinkle salt and pepper over both sides. Set aside at least for 15 minutes. Dredge both sides of the prepared ingredients in flour, one piece at a time. (Do this step for all the pieces before the next step.) Heat a large non-stick skillet with a tablespoon oil over medium low heat. Dip each piece one at a time in the beaten egg, and carefully place in the heated skillet. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes each side, adding more oil if needed, until slightly golden. Repeat until all the ingredients are pan fried. Add an additional tablespoon of oil each time. Serve warm with the dipping sauce.
SIGEUMCHI NAMUL Sigeumchi namul is a simple Korean side dish (banchan) made with spinach. Namul is the general term that refers to a seasoned vegetable dish, and sigeumchi is spinach. INGREDIENTS: 1 bunch spinach (about 10 ounces) 1 scallion, chopped 2 teaspoons Korean red chili pepper paste 2 teaspoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon sesame seeds salt and pepper to taste INSTRUCTIONS: Trim off the roots from the spinach. Wash thoroughly until there is no sand in the water. Blanch the spinach in salted boiling water until wilted, 30 – 40 seconds. Quickly remove the spinach from the pot and shock in cold water to stop the cooking. Drain and gently squeeze out excess water. Cut into 3-inch lengths. Add the remaining ingredients and mix everything well by hand. It will take about 10 minutes for the flavor of the seasonings to seep into the spinach.
