THE ROSE

LIVE IN MANILA Written by Erlynne Jane Allado | Photographed by Lilian Calulot

outh Korean band The Rose’s We Rose You Live Tour rocked Manila last December 15, 2019 at SM Aura’s Samsung Hall.

S

of the band and is in charge of the keyboards and acoustic guitar. On bass is Jaehyeong and also is a sub vocal. And last but not the least, on drums and sub vocals is Hajoon.

The former indie band, now mainstream, is composed of four members, Kim Woosung, Park Dojoon, Lee Hajoon, and Lee Jaehyeong. Woosung is in charge of the lead vocals and the electric guitar. Dojoon is the main vocal

The band left for Manila a day before their concert. As they arrive, the hashtag #TheRoseInManila trended on social media as their fans, the Black Roses or Broses for short, waited for them and celebrated because

their favorite band is finally in Manila for the first time ever since the band’s debut three years ago. The Rose opened the concert for their Black Roses with Woosung’s sultry voice singing one of their famous songs, I.L.Y. and continued on with Insomnia, I Don’t Know You, and Candy. Following that was the band’s version of Woosung’s recently rereleased solo song, Beautiful Girl, showcasing not only Woosung’s but also Dojoon’s rap skills as he took on BtoB Peniel’s part in the original song. Like We Used To made Black Roses reminiscent as they sang along to the song’s chorus lyrics. Then the mood quickly changed for California, a song from their latest album Red. As the rain sound effects were played and the band proceeded with She’s In The Rain, Broses had a little laugh as Woosung stopped the performance and asked Dojoon to tune his acoustic guitar. Woosung then proceeded by jokingly saying that because of Broses’ hot passion, the guitar strings are getting loose. After tuning, the rain sound effects were again played as Broses sang along. The next set of songs were covers of Lany’s ILYSB, The Script’s Breakeven and Bruno Mars’ Runaway Baby which made everyone inside the hall to groove to the beat of the song. The Beatles’ Hey Jude got Broses singing so good that Woosung complimented them saying that Philippine Broses are “really, really, really good singers”.

Showcasing the individual talents of the members, they also had their solo stages. Dojoon covered James Bay’s Hold Back the River as he plays the guitar. Hajoon and Jaehyeong also switched their instruments for acoustic guitars as they performed a cover of Before You Exit’s Soldier. Broses were almost emotional as the harmony between the vocals of the two filled the whole venue. Woosung, on the other hand, gave an all out performance of Moon and Face, songs from his first solo album Wolf.

For a special event for the Broses, four lucky fans were able to win signed polaroid photos personally prepared by the members. Those lucky fans scored very special memorabilia from the concert. As they continue with the concert, The Rose was reminding their Broses to enjoy the rest of the concert without getting hurt. And the whole venue went crazy as Woosung said the words, “Sana all” and “Charot”, which are

local expressions in the Philippines. This made everyone wonder who taught him the expressions. Unreleased songs, Photograph, OMG, and Can’t Let You Go were performed next. Because these songs have not been released yet, it was definitely a treat for every Brose to hear and enjoy the songs live. And that enjoyment was so apparent that Woosung complimented the Broses

again saying that out of the cities that they have been to, Manila has been the best so far. The best crowd, the best concert, and the best city. With that, the whole hall, again, was filled with endless screams. Broses really did a great job! The end of the setlist consisted of Baby, their debut song, Sorry and ended the concert with the title song of their latest album, Red. And with that last song, both The

Rose and Black Roses gave it their all and jammed until the last beat. The Rose and Black Roses meeting for the first in three years. Hands down to Black Roses for making an unforgettable night in Manila for The Rose. Pictures were taken and with those pictures, everyone will remember the feelings and emotions from that night. And with that, goodbyes were said hoping for more concert. From Black Roses to The Rose, “We Rose you!

LEE JIN HYUK 1ST FANMEET IN MANILA L

Written by Erlynne Jane Allado | Photographed by Lilian Calulot

ee Jinhyuk made Manila shine bright the night of December 14 during his 1st solo S.O.L Fan Meeting at the New Frontier Theater.

Lee Jinhyuk is a member of the Korean boy group UP10TION and was a contestant of the latest season of the Produce 101 series, Produce X 101. Although Jinhyuk did not make it to the final cut, he was loved by many because of his talent, leadership skills, and his bright personality. Because of his popularity, Jinhyuk set out to hold his solo fanmeetings in different countries after the series. And, luckily enough, Manila was one of the venues for Jinhyuk’s first ever S.O.L Fan Meeting. It was the first time Jinhyuk and his Filipino V-dans met and that night was brighter than any day because of Jinhyuk. Lee Jinhyuk opened the fanmeet with a performance of I Like That, the title track of his first solo album S.O.L. Talking about his first solo album, the title S.O.L was inspired by a Greek God, Sol. Aside from that, S.O.L also came from one his nicknames, Baby Sun.

Jinhyuk also shared a bit of behind the scenes information about the title track, I Like That. The track is a combination of Trap and EDM and he chose I Like That as the title track because it is a song the fans can sing along to. The girl singing in the chorus of the song is actually the wife of the song’s producer. The producer was quite unsure if they should cut that part out but Jinhyuk decided to keep it for his V-dans to sing along to. The second track, Villain, shows a different side of Lee Jinhyuk, thinking what he would be able to show if he was a villain from a comic book. The song shows a more confident side of Jinhyuk. And for the last track of the album, Follow Me & You, it is a song written especially for his fans. A song telling his fans to not get hurt, to not be afraid, and to look back because he’ll always be there for his fans. The next part of the fanmeet was going through some of Jinhyuk’s photos uploaded in his Instagram. Of course, all of his photos were oozing with visuals so he shared some tips on how to take a good selfie. According to him, the path to a good selfie starts with your favorite photo app. Raise your

arm in a 45-degree angle, twist your wrist a bit to the side slightly look away from the camera and take that selfie. This maybe a good technique but with Jinhyuk’s visuals, every selfie is a good selfie. Moving on to the Mystery Card portion of the fanmeet wherein Jinhyuk shared or did a little bit something about the word written on the card. The first one was ‘Long Legs’ - Jinhyuk is known for having model-like long legs. And just to be specific about how long his legs are, they needed to be measured. How long are Jinhyuk’s legs? They are a 110 centimeters long to be exact. And he flaunted those long legs by doing a runway walk on the stage. The last word for the Mystery Card portion was ‘V-dan’ and he has nothing but love for his ever-supportive fans. Jinhyuk made sure that all of his fans knew how much he loves them by shooting hearts and saying ‘Mahal kita’ which is ‘I love you’ in Filipino and this made the gesture even more special for his Filipino V-dans. The next performance was Villain. Jinhyuk came out sporting a Joker-concept look matching the song. Continuing the energy from Jinhyuk’s Villain performance, it was time for Jinhyuk to play some games. The first one was Tumbang Preso, a classic Filipino game which works by hitting an empty can with a slipper from a distance to make it fall.

Jinhyuk was shocked when he saw that both the slipper and can were gigantic. He was only given 90 seconds to complete the challenge. Using normal-sized slipper to hit a normal-sized can is hard enough but Jinhyuk succeeded with fierce determination. And also, thanks to V-dans’ cheer and support. The next game was balloon popping. Jinhyuk had to pop balloons with darts from a distance. He needs to do the missions inside any popped balloon. During the first try, he was only able to pop one balloon with a mission which was to dance to I Like That at twice the speed. Jinhyuk was almost out of breath after that mission. But one mission was not enough so Jinhyuk was given another chance to pop balloons. This time around, he was able to pop more balloons with missions. Jinhyuk was able to show his masculine side by doing the 10 push-ups mission, his sexy side by dancing to Camila Cabello’s Havana and his cute side by doing the 3-set aegyo mission. But the highlight of the missions was the morning call. Imagine Jinhyuk saying ‘Good morning, sweet darling’ as a morning call. Well, the V-dans during the fanmeet heard it live. Jinhyuk was so embarrassed he jokingly asked everyone not to upload it in social media but that morning call definitely needed to be shared. The last part of the fanmeet was Jinhyuk performing Follow Me & You. This was followed by Jinhyuk’s sweet message to his fans thanking them for always supporting him, asking his fans if they would welcome him

again when he comes back to the Philippines. V-dans answered by loudly shouting yes. As Jinhyuk was about to take a picture with the V-dans, a video with Jinhyuk’s photos as a member of UP10TION was played. This was made especially by Honey10s and V-dans, showing support in Jinhyuk and his future activities. Jinhyuk thanked the fandoms, saying that he wouldn’t be where he is if it was not for Honey10s and V-dans. He is thankful that both fandoms are together supporting him. It was indeed an emotional surprise for Jinhyuk from his Filipino fans. As if the night was not memorable enough, no one was expecting that there was an even bigger surprise. This time for the V-dans. Because S.O.L Fan Meeting in Manila was the first fanmeet after Jinhyuk’s solo debut, all of the attendees of the fanmeet had a hi-touch chance with Jinhyuk. Jinhyuk was so active during the fanmeet. He was willing to do missions without a hint of hesitation and it was apparent that he had so much fun. He made an effort in speaking in English as much as he can to better communicate with the fans and V-dans were grateful for that. As for the V-dans, aside from being able to watch Jinhyuk live, that hitouch and close encounter with Jinhyuk was something to remember. Lee Jinhyuk will be back. Manila will be brighter again when he comes back and rest assured, V-dans will be there to make him shine even more brighter.

or his first European tour, HOLLAND stopped in Paris to meet his fans last December 13, 2019. He worked with MyMusicTaste for the organization of his concerts in Europe entitled “HOLLAND 1ST WORLD TOUR EP.1: INVITATION FROM NEVERLAND “. This is the second partnership between the artist and the organizer who had already worked together for a crowdfunding for the first singer mini-album entitled HOLLAND released in March. Discovered in 2018, HOLLAND is also known to be the first idol to have announced to the public his homosexuality. Since his debut in January 2018 with the title “Neverland”, he tells

through his songs the stages he went through in his queer journey and tries to represent a part of the LGBTQ community. Dressed in white, HOLLAND arrived on stage greeted by the cheers of the audience for the main song of his mini-album: “Nar_C”. Quickly, the singer sits for a Q/A portion according to questions which have reached him through social media. During this time, he explained why he came out publicly: “I no longer wanted to hide about my homosexuality. And I wanted to share my experience with people who surely have the same injuries as mine. I really wanted to encourage each other and heal together.” He resumed the concert with his cover of Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” during which he placed himself on the keyboard for his performance. During a slight break, he continued with the following songs: “I’m So Afraid” and “I’m Not Afraid”. Through a video clip which was the concert,

break, behind the scenes for “Loved You Better”, released two days before were shown. It is with this

song that the artist returned to the stage, igniting the fans to sing along. HOLLAND continued with the unreleased song “Sparking Star”, for which no release date has yet been announced. After a game during which the public had to guess what the singer preferred between two proposals, a fan went up on stage following her victory and took a selfie with the idol. He launched new music which was not yet released - “Imagination”. Then resumed with “Up” to jump with the public and went to meet the fans by going down into the pit. He confided in the fact of being happy to be able to meet the Harling, the name of his fandom, before performing his first outing: “Neverland”. The young man left the stage to change for his encore. The audience chanted his name to bring him back. He returned by singing a composition dedicated to his fans, which has also not yet been revealed before, and took the opportunity to recover the various letters and gifts that the public near the stage gave to him. In a final thank you, he left the stage, thus concluding this first meeting.

Celebrating

Seollal:

A GLIMPSE OF LOCAL CUSTOMS

Details from: https://english.visitkorea.or.kr/

Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day;

first day of the lunar calendar) is one of the most celebrated national holidays in Korea. While many observe Sinjeong (Solar New Year; January 1 of the Gregorian/Western calendar), Koreans also celebrate Seollal, which usually lasts for three days (the day of, the day before, and the day after). This year, Seollal falls on January 25 of the Gregorian calendar. More than just a holiday to mark the beginning of a new year, Seollal is truly a special occasion for Korean people. Not only is it a time for paying respect to ancestors, but it is also an opportunity to catch up with family members. During Seollal, Koreans usually perform ancestral rites, play folk games, eat traditional foods, listen to stories and talk well into the night. Read on to discover how Koreans celebrate Seollal.

Before Seollal: Busy With Preparations In Korea, the rush to prepare for Seollal begins days beforehand. Food is prepared in advance and people begin to purchase and package gifts for their parents and relatives. Another crucial part of preparing for Seollal for many people is making travel arrangements to visit their hometowns. There is a mad rush to book buses, trains, or plane tickets before they all sell out. Traveling during the holidays can take two to four times the normal travel time due to heavy traffic.

The Day of Seollal: New Year’s greeting and traditional games! Celebrations have changed from the past but in general, the morning of Seollal begins with the family members gathering in their seolbim (special clothing for Seollal) for an ancestral rite. The ritual is conducted to express respect and gratitude to one’s ancestors. Following the rite, everyone gathers together and eats the ritual food. The main dish of the day is tteokguk, a traditional soup made with sliced rice cakes, beef, egg, vegetables, and other ingredients. In Korea, the clear broth of tteokguk is believed to symbolize starting out the year with a clean mind and body. After the meal, the younger generations of the family pay respect to their elders by taking a deep bow called sebae. Then, the elders offer their blessings and wishes for a prosperous year. Children often receive sebaetdon (New Year’s money) as a Seollal gift. For the remainder of the day, family members play traditional folk games, eat food, and share stories.
