HELLO,

DANIEL Original article: https://n.news.naver.com/entertain/article/311/0001118552? | translation by @incessantbeat

K

ang Daniel has filmed “Hello, Daniel” for SBS FiL in Portland, USA in February. He shared his thoughts on the filming “It was a time for me to deeply understand, think, and organize (my thoughts) about many of the problems I had in my mind.” On the first exclusive reality program with his own name on it, he said “I felt really pressured as it was something exclusive for the first time in my life, and I felt a lot of responsibilities to work even harder because it’s a story solely

about me. Even so, I really liked the purpose of the program, and enjoyed the filming very much.” “Hello, Daniel” is a travel reality program on Kang Daniel’s time leaving for Portland, USA following the “Kinfolk Life” (a naturefriendly and healthy lifestyle). You can check it out on SBS FiL every Wednesday after the first episode airing at 7pm on March 4th. On SBS MTV, it’s every Saturday at 7pm on the 7th. You can also watch it through LGU+ Idol Live app.

From herein, it’s one question one answer with Kand Daniel

I wonder if you’ve found yourself while travelling alone. What does Kang Daniel think?

What’s the decisive reason for your appearance in “Hello, Daniel”?

This is a question that I asked myself a lot on this trip. It’s really difficult to give an answer. But rather than focusing on what kind of person I am, I want to be the person who puts a question mark on “what kind of life” will Kang Daniel live in the future. I think there will be no end for the search of the “true” Kang Daniel in the future.

I think the biggest reason for me was that I felt like I needed a new turning point for myself. And I felt like new experiences in a new environment while taking a break would be perfect for that turning point. I think yearning for travelling was part of that. “Hello, Daniel” is the first exclusive reality program with Kang Daniel’s own name on it. can you elaborate on that? I felt really pressured as it was something exclusive for the first time in my life, and I felt a lot of responsibilities to work even harder becaause it’s a story soley based about me. Even so, I really liked the purpose of the program, and enjoyed the filming very much. You left for Portland, USA in pursuit of a “Kinfolk life”. I am curous about what you felt about it. It was a time for me to deeply understand, think, and organize (my thoughts) about many of the problems I had in my mind. I’ve come to notice again a lot of things I’ve become so familiar with and forgotten about, and while organizing (my thoughts) about the past and the future in a calm and orderly way, I’ve felt like I was able to find happiness. I also learned to “take it easy”. I think I’ve gained gratitude for little things in life. They say you fave to walk slowly to see things.

What aspects of Kang Daniel can we see though “Hello, Daniel”? You’ll be able to see a no-nonsense, natural image! I really enjoyed the trip, being here and there in Portland, I’ve got a lot of places I want to recommend with other people. I’m happy to be able to introduce those places to a lot of people through “Hello, Daniel”, not something I only know about myself. Even though it’s Kang Daniel’s travel, rather than focusing on me, I hope you’ll watch the program comfortably as a program that introduces you to travel destinations. Lastly, can you say something to the viewers? It’s been a long time since I’ve greeted you under the name Kang Daniel. It’s also been a really long time since I’ve travelled, and it was really a good time that I was able to feel why I needed a break and some free time. I hope everyone watching “Hello, Daniel” can also feel the happiness of travelling together with me, and always be healthy. “Hello, Daniel”, I hope you’d enjoy watching it!

PARASITE WINS 4 OSCARS AND MAKES OSCAR HISTORY

P

ARASITE is the film that took home the most awards at the Oscars 2020, winning four Academy Awards at tonight’s Oscars including Best Picture, Directing, International Feature Film and Writing (Original Screenplay). Not only that, but it also became the first non-English language film in Oscar history to win the award for Best Picture. Writer, Director and Producer Bong Joon Ho won all three of the categories for which he was nominated, now with three Oscar wins to match his three

nominations. Parasite was also the first film from South Korea to be nominated for International Feature Film or the category’s previous name, Foreign Language Film. Throughout the night, Bong Joon Ho graciously paid tribute to his fellow nominees, with perhaps none more touching than his admission that he studied filmmaking by looking to the works of his fellow Directing nominee, Martin Scorsese, leading to a standing ovation for the legendary director.

PARASITE WILL STREAM EXCLUSIVELY ON HULU IN THE US

H

ulu has exclusive U.S. streaming rights to “Parasite,” the film that made history as the first foreignlanguage film to win best picture at this year’s Oscars.

Under a deal with indie studio Neon, “Parasite” will be available on Hulu beginning Wednesday, April 8, the Disney-controlled streamer announced. The movie from filmmaker Bong Joon Ho won four Academy Awards for best picture, international film, best director, and original screenplay (which Bong wrote with Jin Won Han). The thriller/dark comedy explores socioeconomic inequality in South Korea, following an impoverished, literally basement-dwelling family posing as qualified professionals to gain long-term employment by a wealthy family. Neon acquired the North American rights to “Parasite” from Korea’s CJ Entertainment. Hulu’s streaming come under a pact it struck with under which all films and content

rights to “Parasite” multiyear licensing Neon back in 2017, of the distributor’s become available to

stream exclusively on Hulu following their theatrical release. “Parasite” was written and directed by Bong and features a cast including his longtime collaborator Song Kang Ho, as well as Choi Woo Shik, Park So Dam, Cho Yeo Jeong, Lee Jung Eun, Lee Sun Kyun and Chang Hyae Jin. The film premiered in May 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the festival’s Palme d’Or top prize. The weekend after its Oscars triumph, the film posted a record box-office increase in ticket sales for a movie that won a bestpicture Academy Award, after Neon doubled the North American theatrical footprint. The awards wins also prompted digital sales of “Parasite” to shoot up. Through Monday, “Parasite” has garnered $48.9 million at the domestic box office and $155.6 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. Hulu had 30.4 million subscribers as of the end of 2019, up 33% for the year, Disney said in announcing Q4 earnings. Of those, 3.2 million also paid for Hulu’s live TV channel bundle. Disney secured control of Hulu last year through the 20th Century Fox deal and via a separate pact with Comcast/ NBCUniversal, which eventually will sell its Hulu stake to the Mouse House.

K-Tigers turned K-Trot

O

riginally, K-Tigers was known as a South Korea Taekwondo team that focused on doing Taekwondo and acrobatic tricking. Nowadays, they are most known as a Taekwondo athlete and K-pop dance cover crew. The team was founded by Han Suk-an in 1990 in Seoul, South Korea. Their members include a men team, women team, and the little K-Tigers. K-Tigers grabbed attention after their cover of the dance of Big Bang Taeyang’s “Ringa Linga.” The unique and attractive choreography combination between dance

and Taekwondo acrobatic looked like so much fun and interesting for Korean netizens and international viewers. After the success of the “Ringa Linga” dance cover, they showed more attractive dance covers with BTS’s “Boy in Luv” and Big Bang’s GD x Taeyang’s “Good Boy.” In 2016, K-Tigers debuted with 9 members of their team as a co-ed group and signed under CJEN Music Entertainment. They debuted on April 25, 2016, with first mini-album Hero. The group split into two units, the male unit

with Na Tae-joo as the leader and the female with Jeong Yoon-ji as the leader. With the recent rise in popularity of trot, the shift can be seen as well in K-Tigers as Na Taejoo appeared on TV Chosun entertainment program “Mr. Trot” as one of its contestants. Na Tae-joo picked up Park Sang-chul’s “Unconditional” on the day of the broadcast and attracted attention as if he were doing a poomsae.,Na Tae-joo said after the stage, “I took the top spot in the Taekwondo road, so I want to take the world’s first place with Trot.”

TEXTBOOK SUGGESTIONS FOR LEARNING KOREAN Details from: https://www.perapera.org/best-korean-texbooks/

ELEMENTARY KOREAN (2ND EDITION) Elementary Korean is the gold standard for learning Korean by self study. It is the most thorough and all-round introduction to Korean that I know of, and the logical structure makes it easy to follow. One thing that might turn you off is that it ‘feels’ a bit like a university textbook, in terms of the writing tone and level. All that said: this book will give you a comprehensive base in Korean. If you only buy one textbook for Korean, get this one. You get 384 pages of material and tons of practice exercises to boot.

KOREAN FOR BEGINNERS:

MASTERING CONVERSATIONAL KOREAN With its tricky pronunciation, complex grammar and elaborate honorific forms, the Korean language can present a daunting prospect. This was the first book I used when I started. It’s a nice option if you prefer a gentle introduction to Korean. It’s also entertaining with plenty of cultural information packed in.

INTEGRATED KOREAN SERIES This is another university-style textbook, developed by the University of Hawaii for its students studying Korean. It’s a very good textbook for a university classroom, which doesn’t always translate 100% to self-study, but this one does a pretty good job. It’s more of an academic approach, which might appeal to some people over the more ‘conversational’ textbooks above.

TALK TO ME IN KOREAN SERIES If you started studying Korean using online resources, you’ve probably come across the website Talk to Me in Korean — a site that’s been around since 2009. The team that run this website created this series of textbooks, and they’ve used their years of student feedback to get it right in textbook form. As the title suggests, the focus is on speaking right away, with minimal focus on grammar or learning to read. There’s tons of accompanying audio for you to speak along with. In this same series, there are also additional levels and a workbook with more exercises for each level.

KOREAN GRAMMAR IN USE This book is the next logical step after Korean for Beginners. It goes into the grammar in more depth but still in a digestible form.

KOREAN GRAMMAR FOR INT’L LEARNERS This is the most comprehensive Korean grammar book we could find. It includes all the grammatical forms in plenty of detail. The book is also based on the official grammar textbook that is used in schools to teach grammar in South Korea, so you can rest easy knowing that you’re getting the correct answer when you’re looking up a point. One of the best points of this book is that each grammar point is packed with example sentences. Reading the examples really helps the reader to understand the point and see how it’s used.

500 BASIC KOREAN VERBS In any language, verbs form the vital medium for effective communication. Korean is no exception. Its tricky verb conjugations and challenging grammar present tough obstacles for learners. 500 Basic Korean Verbs is an invaluable reference that breaks down 500 of the most common Korean verbs.

SOUTH KOREA’S SOJU MAKERS JOIN FIGHT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS Makers of soju, South Korea’s national drink and one of the world’s best selling spirits, are jumping into the fight on the largest outbreak of coronavirus outside China by sharing their stockpiles of alcohol with makers of sanitizers. Disinfectants, such as hand sanitizers, are flying off the shelves, along with medicalgrade masks, as infections in South Korea have surged past 5,000 in just over a month since its first patient was diagnosed. South Korean soju makers have responded to soaring ethanol demand for sanitizers by donating the alcohol that goes into the drink,

a distilled spirit with 17% to 20% alcohol by volume traditionally based on rice, but now often wheat or potatoes. “Ethanol demand for disinfection has grown while supply is limited...we have decided to provide it,” an official of Daesun Distilling, based in the southeastern city of Busan, told Reuters. To banish the virus, the company has pledged to donate 32 tonnes of ethanol for use in disinfecting buildings and public places in Busan and southeastern Daegu, the city at the center of South Korea’s outbreak.

Article by Jane Chung; Published via https://www.reuters.com/

“We plan to keep donating until the coronavirus outbreak is stabilized and to donate 50 tonnes more,” added the official, who sought anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media. South Koreans drink an average of about 12 shots of soju each week, media say, citing industry figures. Ethanol for alcoholic drinks can be produced by fermentation or distillation, typically from grains and plants. The chemical can also be made from petrochemical feedstock. Whether used for liquor or disinfection, both have the same chemical structure and can break apart the virus particle, said Lee

Duckhwan, a chemistry professor at Sogang University in Seoul, the capital. “If there’s any difference, that is the liquor tax imposed on ethanol produced by liquor makers,” Lee said. The virus fears boosted February sales of soaps and hand sanitizers, including those with an alcohol base, to four times the level a year ago, data from a major retailer Lotte Mart shows. Shares of ethanol producers also jumped. Following Daesun Distilling, Hallasan Soju, based on the resort island of Jeju, also provided 5 tonnes of ethanol to authorities on Tuesday, a company official said.
