LOBAL MUSIC ICON
RELEASES LIT ALBUM Award-winning, global superstar drops highly-awaited final songs of his innovative cross-cultural studio album
a
new wave of sound has arrived! Influential, global icon and China’s top superstar LAY (Lay Zhang) drops his final component of the LIT album today, by Zhang Yixing Studio, which comes to completion with the final six songs for the twelve-track album. Following the record-breaking success of the first six songs of LIT, LAY continues to bridge two cultures and two sounds in an astonishing cross-cultural blend, while showcasing his personal growth in his artistry. LAY most recently released the perfect summer anthem BOOM, where
LAY gracefully forged together tropical and hip-hop elements. To date, the first part of the album surpassed over 13 million streams and the music video for LIT has been viewed more than 10 million times. LAY creates a sensational, crosscultural music style all of his own by using traditional Chinese instruments and modern hip-hop beats for a new innovative sound interlaced with English and Mandarin lyrics. Each of the tracks was co-written and co-produced by LAY himself to ensure his message and story is clearly infused in each song. For the full album, LAY teamed up with GRAMMY Award-winning producers Scott Storch (50 Cent, BeyoncÊ, DJ Khaled, Snoop Dogg) and Murda Beatz (Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Drake) to finish his vision. LIT is LAY’s final contribution to his groundbreaking cross-cultural hiphop album that has been highly-awaited by fans.
“蓮”- translated to LIT in English describes a Chinese religious belief of the duality of “Life & Death”. The “Lotus Flower” is also used by the same Chinese character as it’s a cultural icon recognized as something that “grows and blossoms out of the dirt/mud”. This paints a perfect metaphor of LAY’s album; firstly, the duality of a two-part release, and secondly it represents a new birth plus a new sound in the midst of all his past achievements. Through the songs, LAY explores the concepts of solitude, arrogance, self-confidence, loyalty, resolution and courage. These twelve songs blend very ancient musical elements and concepts with the modernity of contemporary pop. From the lyrics, to the production, be prepared for an emotional and auditory journey. The cutting edge production for newly released songs like Changsha, Mama, Call My Name, Late Night, and Wish will give you a very cross-cultural and refreshing journey as the combination of traditional “peking opera” and Chinese instruments are showcased through passionate lyrics showing a whole new blend of music. LAY received tremendous success this year garnering international attention after joining forces with Steve Aoki and will.i.am for the hit cross-cultural collaboration Love You More, reaching #1 on the QQ Music China chart. He became a household name in Asia and one of the most beloved stars in the region with a loyal 49.5 million followers on Weibo and over 12 million followers on Instagram. As a solo artist, LAY’s career has skyrocketed
from tremendous success becoming the highest-ranked Mandopop star on Billboard 200 chart and the first Chinese artist to enter the iTunes Top 60 in the US with his third album NAMANANA. The pre-order for Lay Zhang’s new digital album LIT went live on China’s QQ Music platform, and 9 certification records were instantly broken as it went live. The digital album surpassed 1.5 million pre-orders within 7 minutes and 19 seconds of launch, locking in the #1 position on QQ Music’s daily and weekly album sales chart. The music video and EP for LIT went on to break records for a Chinese artist. In 24 hours, LAY received over 1.6 million views on his YouTube channel, and over 5 million views in four and a half days on the music video for LIT. Organically, LAY received over 100 reaction videos on YouTube within a week of the music video’s release, which led to 1 million subscribers in that same week on LAY’s YouTube channel (officially June 6th). Additionally, LAY’s song debuted at #22 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales Chart while LAY peaked on Billboard’s Social 50 Chart at #36. Outside of music, he is a powerhouse in the acting world of TV and film and hosted multiple top-rated reality shows in Asia, all while being the face of and representing top-tier brands such as Converse, M.A.C, and Biotherm Homme in Asia, as well as Calvin Klein and Daniel Wellington Watches globally.
SSAK3
S
SAK3 is a three-member group composed of Yoo Dragon (Yoo Jae Suk), Linda G (Lee Hyori), and B-Ryong (Rain). They came together through the MBC variety show “How Do You Play?” and made their highlyanticipated debut on Music Core last July 25. According to Nielsen Korea, the episode featuring SSAK3 scored an average viewership rating of 2.1 percent, more than tripling its viewership from last week (when it scored an average rating of 0.6 percent). Not only does it mark the highest rating Music Core has achieved all year, but it marks the highest rating achieved by any of the three music shows in 2020. SSAK3’s explosive popularity also catapulted their debut song “Beach Again”
(also known as “Summer Sea Again”) to the top of the music charts, making it the fifth song in 2020 to achieve a perfect all-kill. On the July 30 episode of M Countdown, SSAK3 grabbed their first ever music show trophy with a total score of 6,420.
B-Ryong shared his thanks for the win on behalf of the group, saying, “To be honest, although it can be difficult, we formed this group so that we could give everyone a fun time. I sincerely thank you.” Linda G yelled to her husband Lee Sang Soon, “Honey, I came in first! I miss you a lot!” and blew him a kiss. Yoo Dragon expressed his thanks to their fans, the “M Countdown” staff, and more. “We never even dreamed this would happen,” he said. The trio then had all the artists stay on stage to dance along during their encore performance, creating what’s sure to be a legendary moment! Their Korean name is similar to the word 싹쓸이 (Ssakssuri) which means to sweep and they want to focus on sweeping the music charts.

IDOLS we wish to see in a CONCERT SOON Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the entertainment industry has been slowed down as artists cancel events and international performances. In an effort to prevent further spreading the virus, concerts, festivals, and other events such as fanmeetings have been canceled, rescheduled, or modified into online events. Also, televised broadcasts of music shows
are being held without their typical studio audience. But the KPOP industry is continuously adjusting to the current situation as artists proceed on releasing new music and maximizing online platforms to engage with their global fans. And as excitement persists among fans, we have listed the artists we can’t wait to see in a concert ASAP (once the pandemic calms).
Map of the Soul world tour was originally slated to begin last April 11 in Seoul but was inevitably postponed. BTS recently announced some good news for their fans as they will be releasing an English-language single on August 21. And we can’t wait to see them perform the song live!
YG Entertainment announced the group’s debut Korean studio album, BLACKPINK: The Album, would be released on October 2 increasing the fans’ anticipation for the group’s upcoming activities.
LACKPINK
BLACKPINK’s full album will be the final product of the group’s three-part comeback that was previously announced by YG Entertainment. BLACKPINK kicked off with the first part “How
You Like That” in June, and a new single for the second part is well on its way. A source from the agency shared, “In 2020, BLACKPINK will focus on the global market with systematic and thorough planning and execution. The global project we are carrying out with the world’s largest music group Universal Music to have BLACKPINK take a greater leap is taking place steadily.”
Commemorating Kang Daniel’s 1st Solo Debut Anniversary last July 25, he celebrated the event with his fans through an online fanmeeting. Afterwards, fans have asked when will he conduct another fanmeeting, he contemplated and admitted to be considering to do a concert next once circumstances allow. Following the success of his 1st mini album - CYAN, released last March 24, he is slated to have a comeback on August 3 with his 2nd mini album - MAGENTA. The upcoming album which is the second installment of his Color series, is described to embody strong and powerful concept. And we’re looking forward to the performances he has prepared for us.

The King eternal monarch
3 1 Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho), a modern-day Emperor of the Kingdom of Corea, attempts to cross the barrier into an alternate reality where the Republic of Korea exists in the Kingdom’s stead. He comes across detective Jung Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun), whom he recognises from an identity card
he obtained during the turningpoint of his childhood, his father’s assassination. Lee Gon’s half uncle, Lee Lim (Lee Jung-jin), who assassinated the previous king, Lee Ho (Lee Gon’s father), is in hiding and assembling armies whilst traversing back and forth between the two parallel worlds.
The drama tells the story of Moon Gangtae (Kim Soo-hyun), a community health worker at a psychiatric ward who doesn’t have time for love, and Ko Moon-young (Seo Ye-ji), a successful children’s book author who suffers from antisocial personality disorder and has never known love. Coasts If you’re planning on vacationing in Korea this summer, be sure to check out at least one of the following coastal destinations! Korea is on three sides by water, giving it plenty of beaches in a variety of shapes and sizes that offer a welcomed escape from everyday life.
Information from http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/
Sokcho Beach Sokcho Beach is well known for the picturesque pine trees that stand proudly along its white sandy coast. One of the perks of this particular beach is that there are many tourist attractions in the surrounding area, including Yeongnangho Lake and Seoraksan Mountain, one of Korea’s most famous mountains. Given the beach’s range of facilities and nearby accommodations, Sokcho Beach is a convenient place for a weekend trip. Visitors can even rent a fishing rod and go fishing at nearby Jodo Island, or walk towards the pier to get some fresh hoe (sliced raw fish) at one of the local fish markets. One of the biggest draws of Sokcho Beach is that it is located near Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, making it easy to find for even first-time visitors. Festivals held at Sokcho Beach include the Sunrise Festival on January 1 of every year, and other events that take place during the beach swimming period between July and August for all visitors to enjoy.
Guryongpo Beach Guryongpo Beach is about 24 kilometers away from Pohang and 1.5 kilometers from Guryongpo-eup. Thanks to the gentle slope of the ocean floor and the clean seawater, Guryongpo Beach is a favorite vacation spot for swimming enthusiasts. The beach is also popular among fishermen, many of whom troll their lines in Yeongilman Bay.
Gyeongpo Beach Gyeongpo
Beach is the largest beach on the east coast, and is only about a kilometer away from Gyeongpodae Pavilion, famous for its sunrise view. Perhaps the most striking characteristic of Gyeongpo Beach is its fine powdery sand, which is perfect for barefoot walks along the beach. There is also a beautiful pine tree forest
nearby for leisure walks. Beach activities such as banana boating, Jet Skiing, and waterskiing are popular as well. In addition, Gyeongpo Summer Music Festival is held every evening between the end of July and early August, featuring performances from famous bands and hip-hop groups for a beachside party atmosphere.
Naksan Beach With a sandy shoreline stretching over 1,810 meters, Naksan Beach is one of the top beaches in Gangwon-do, drawing in countless visitors each year. The beach runs along clean waters, bordered by rows of pine trees. In addition to its natural beauty, Naksan Beach also has a variety of water activities such as riding on a banana boat or Jet Ski for those looking for more adventure. The beach is also a top pick for those who are interested in Korea’s traditional culture, as it is close to Naksansa Temple and Uisangdae Pavilion, which was built to commemorate Great Monk Uisang. As an added bonus, the pavilion is also one of the best places in the area to view the sunrise.
Daecheon Beach is the largest beach on the west coast, and is known for its shallow and calm waters. The sand on the upper shores of Daecheon Beach is especially soft and easy to wash off because it is composed of finely eroded shells. Closer to the shoreline, the sand is
Daecheon Beach hard packed. These two varieties of sand allow visitors to enjoy both leisure walks and sand scrubs. Daecheon Beach is also home to the annual Boryeong Mud Festival. In winter, the beach draws large crowds again as locals and tourists flock to the shores for the annual Sunset Festival.
Eurwangni Beach Eurwangni Beach, located near Seoul and Incheon International Airport, is a popular beach, both for its gorgeous views and clean white sand. The beach’s shallow water also provides the perfect place for children to go swimming. Amenities nearby include a number of lavish resorts and restaurants that serve
fresh seafood. Having dinner outside on the terrace of one of these restaurants is the perfect way to watch the final rays of sunlight as they disappear over the horizon! Beachgoers can also rent a fishing boat or a fishing rod to fish off the side of the pier. A variety of beach festivals take place at Eurwangni every summer.
Muchangpo Beach Muchangpo Beach is particularly famous for what is known as the “Moses Miracle, a natural phenomenon in which extreme tides reveal the seafloor for only a few short hours two or three days a month (around the 15th and 30th days of the lunar calendar). The exposed sea floor makes a path about 1.5 kilometers
that reaches all the way from the beach to Seokdaedo Island. The Muchangpo Mystic Sea Road Festival celebrates this occurrence every year in August or September, with the exact timing varying each year. The beach is also known for its scenic coastal drive, clusters of pine trees, and beautiful sunsets.
Haeundae Beach The slope of Haeundae Beach is shallow and there is little change in tide, making this beach perfect for swimming. The beach is famous for its views of the sunrise and moonrise as seen from Haewoljeong Pavilion atop Dalmajigogae Hill. Haeundae’s Dalmaji-gil Road, which is located between Haeundae Beach and Songjeong Beach, is another recommended spot for a romantic view of the moonlight glistening off the water’s surface. Haeundae Beach is also famous for its many cultural events and festivals that are held throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy Haeundae Sand Festival in summer; Busan International Film Festival in fall; and the New Year Festival and Polar Bear Swimming Contest in winter.
Hyeopjae Beach
Hyeopjae Beach is one of the best beaches on Jeju Island for swimmers, since the waters are shallow with no sudden drops. Tiny shells in the sand give the beach a silver sheen and make for a firm feel that is perfect for walks along the water’s edge. Once you get in the water,
you’ll be pleased to discover that the water is so clean that you can clearly see your toes! A pleasant beach with plenty of space, Hyeopjae is all the more beautiful for its view of black basalt rocks to one side and Biyangdo Island standing out in the distance.
Jungmun Saekdal Beach Jungmun Saekdal Beach within Jeju Jungmun Resort is a unique beach comprised of a gradient of black, white, red, and gray sand, as well as the famous black volcanic stone of Jeju Island. To the right of the sandy beach is a natural cave that was created by coastal erosion. Rare plants flourish near the cave, offering a convenient spot for some eco-focused sightseeing. The waves and tides can be rather rough along Jungmun, so while conditions are great for wind surfing,
Jet Skiing and other water leisure activities, non-swimmers and young children are advised to stick close to the shoreline under the careful watch of lifeguards. Jungmun Resort is also home to an aquarium, Yeomiji Botanical Garden, Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, and a cluster of traditional houses typical on Jeju Island. Various events are held along the beach and within the resort complex throughout the year.

Pajeon
Perfect paired with makgeolli on a rainy day
Pajeon (green onion pancake) is a mixture of wheat flour batter and scallions shallow-fried on a griddle. It goes wonderfully well with chilled dongdongju (floating rice wine). For some reason, people associate rain with pajeon. Some say it’s because the sound of raindrops hitting the ground or a window sill reminds people of the sizzle of spattering oil as the pajeon is fried. As strange as it sounds, this theory may not be as far-fetched as you might think. According to an experiment conducted by a sound engineering lab, the two sounds have almost identical vibrations and frequencies.
MONSOON SEASON ARRIVES IN KOREA Article from https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200624002600315
The early summer monsoon season has recently began in South Korea. Heavy rain pounded South Korea’s central regions and the greater Seoul area Monday, flooding houses and roads, and prompting authorities to close riverside and mountainous areas. The downpours have killed 15 and left 11 missing as of 6 a.m., according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.
Nearly 1,600 were forced to leave their homes, with two-thirds of them based in the provinces of South and North Chungcheong. Reports of damaged properties continued to rise, with damage reported at 4,281 private and public facilities across the country. Some 1,300 houses were submerged or buried, while damage was also reported at 705 warehouses and cattle sheds.
In addition to buildings, 936 roads and bridges also suffered damage from the heavy rain. A total of 277 landslides were reported, and essential facilities such as waterworks, sewage and railways were also affected. To restore damaged facilities and help evacuees, the government has mobilized more than 48,800 rescue and volunteer workers as well as nearly 5,800 pieces of heavy equipment, such as excavators and water pumps. While around 55 percent of damaged facilities have been temporarily restored, 37 roads, including Jamsu Bridge, which connects the southern and northern parts of the Han River in Seoul, remained closed. Six rail routes -including Chungbuk, Taebaek and Yeongdong -- were partially or completely restricted. Entry bans remained in place at 251 trekking routes at nine national parks as well as 16 underpasses and 93 parking lots adjacent to streams and rivers to prevent accidents. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Chung Syekyun ordered the Ministry of Interior and Safety to swiftly review a proposal to declare Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces as special disaster zones. Special disaster zones are designated upon requests by provincial governors. When a request is deemed reasonable by the interior ministry, it is then approved by the prime minister and the president.
