ollowing up the hit 2011 KBS drama “Dream High,” “Dream High 2” was highly anticipated. While not a huge hit with the domestic audience in South Korea, it still commands a large following worldwide among fans of K-pop and K-drama. With just 10 episodes out (as of the writing of this review), it ranked number 2 on the Top 25 dramas of the week on Mysoju, and it is on everyone’s watch list. The drama continues the story of Kirin Arts High School from the first Dream High, which is now in financial trouble and is being bought out by a big entertainment company. With the change in director of the school, the new director brings his idols to join the ranks of regular students, which in turn stirs up trouble. It is a story of the underdogs versus the superstars, and also of youth, dreams, and young love. With an all new cast (with the exception of JYP returning as the crazy but lovable English teacher), “Dream High 2” features actress Kang So Ra, and singers Jeong Jin Woo (2AM), Hyo Rin (Sistar), and Ji Yeon (T-ARA) to just name a few. It even had a few cameos from IU and Kim Soo Hyun, who starred in the first “Dream High.” There is so much awesome star power going on in this drama that it is hard not to have a favorite and fall in love. With only six episodes left, I bet everyone is excited to see who will be chosen to be the super idol group. Will it be the Idols or will it be the abnormal class B? Let us stay tuned.

KIM DONG RYUL

travels through the NEW WORLD F Written by Marcus Im

or those who follow KPop stars on twitter, a must follow this past winter and spring was Kim Dong-ryul. This famous balladeer has written songs like Let’s Start Again, Replay and Like a Child. The last song is also made famous to younger audiences because it is a duet with Clazziquai’s Alex. Kim’s travels began on January 31, 2012. He shared his great anticipation by tweeting from the airplane, which is permitted various Korean airlines. The purpose of his trip wasn’t clear. But what is clear is that he flew to New York and immediately did some sightseeing. He went to MoMA and the Guggenheim, and then headed downtown to SoHo. He shared a picture of himself in front of some suburban apartment complex. He said that when he was studying here in the United States more than 10 years ago, he lived in those apartments. The apartments were in suburban Boston. For Kim’s fans, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Kim would visit Boston. At the age of 25, he entered Berklee College of Music, the famous institution that has launched careers like that of John Lloyd Taylor of the Jonas Brothers, film composer Alan Silvestri, jazz singer-pianist Diana Krall, pop singers Paula Cole and Bruce Hornsby. Kim studied film composition.. After several days in Boston, Kim went down to visit Washington, DC. He did some more sightseeing. It is clear that he has an eye for art. He was a former architecture major at Yonsei University. Then he shared a number of food images from his whole trip. He visited places

that you can visit for yourself, like East Ocean City in Boston’s Chinatown. On February 17th, Kim tweeted from St. Louis. With rain, dark clouds and the evening sun peeking through, he tweeted “The sky is angry in St. Louis.” Spent several days dining, sightseeing and visiting museums, he left St. Louis and commented that “Because the US is so vast, one can see different images from the highway at different points.” Just when his tour was becoming routine (go to a major city, eat, sightsee, visit museums, go to new city), in Chicago, Kim surprises his followers by sharing a picture of a beautiful girl, Seonah. Followers are left to wonder what their relationship is. They seemed to be sharing a romantic dinner for two at an Italian restaurant. His followers also must wonder who his companion has been during this whole trip since many of the pictures of him were taken by someone else. After Chicago, Kim left the US... to Mexico! He spent a few beautiful days in the sun on the beach in Cancun. But these images lacked himself and any companions. Then he spent some time in Cuba! As with other tourists to Cuba, Kim was fascinated with the old world Cuba seems to represent. He took in a live jazz performance in Havana before reentering the US. Upon reentering the US, Kim visited the Getty Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He seemed to have made Los Angeles his final stop but he did not make any conclusive tweet to end his trip.

Daesung is “Wings,” Seungri is the “Bad Boy” and G-Dragon is “Blue.” Despite controversies and a long hiatus, Big Bang proved their continuing worldwide popularity by accumulating over eight million views on YouTube within five days of the release of their music video for “Blue.” Along with promoting the album in South Korea, Big Bang will be touring 25 cities worldwide to meet fans through their Big Bang “Alive World Tour 2012.” Make sure to catch this amazing band when they come to a city near you.

MILITARY BOUND An Idol As

I

know it may feel a bit depressing and cause your heart to ache to see your favorite male idols be shipped off to the army, but it’s a mandatory duty that’s taken seriously in South Korea. It seems like more and more idols headed off to the military this past year and, more than ever, some are choosing to not do it publicly as others. Those who choose the secret route typically do so in order to keep the prying eyes of off the public off of them. Two years may seem like a long time, but it flies by fast and they are back, ready to get back in the swing of things and start entertaining again for all to see. We all get a slight bit worried for their safety, but they’re in good hands and there’s nothing to fear at all. Shinwha’s Eric, Jun Jin, Min Woo, Andy, and Hye Sung have all just completed their active military duties. Not only have they waited for each other to finish their military duties, but they scheduled their comeback at the same time also. This shows the friendship and dedication that some idols have, and that time in the military does not mean the end of a group. When being an idol, there are so many expectations from so many people that, when they finally enlist in the military, it gives them time to reflect and find a sense of peace within themselves and to get away from the public for awhile. However, not all stars follow this path, Heechul from Super Junior, who enlisted last year, being the main example. He is still a heavy hitter in the spotlight with his fans.

Heechul is just one guy that just can’t stay clear of the public even in then military. However, he’s a very popular guy with the troops and, with his sense of humor and personality, I think it’s a much more comfortable situation for him. Rain just enlisted last year and he’s already in high ranking with his group and making high marks each day with his training. He’s not much in the limelight as Heechul, but he does make time to see his family and friends. Also, he makes sure to see his “little brothers,” aka MBLAQ, from time to time. It’s just not only a physical challenge when entering the service, but a mental challenge also. There have been reports of idols and other famous celebrities that have tried to steer clear of mandatory military services and have been severely reprimanded for it. Not serving in the military can lead to major prison time and many idols and other celebrities do not want that to tarnish there reputation. The mental stress when entering the military can stem from leaving the spotlight, screaming fans, tours, and etc. behind. Having to wait two years to return to fame is a big adjustment to young male idols. It’s really an honorable thing to see these young men do their country proud by serving in the military. Fans need not worry; after two years they will return stronger and better than ever. These guys are doing a great favor by serving South Korea and they should be appraised and applauded when there time is done.

A Warrior's Debut With...Bunnies? Introducing

Written By Soo Edited by Grace Jeong

Overall, critics praised B.A.P’s debut as powerful, commenting on the group’s confidence and skills that defied their newcomer status. “Warrior” also debuted on Billboard’s K-pop Chart at number ten. With such a debut, B.A.P has hit the ground running and can continue to keep running, as long as they keep up with all the good music. B.A.P has released "Secret Love" as the follow up single for "Warrior.” The song features Song Ji Eun from the girl group Secret, and the lyrics were written by member Bang Yong Guk. “Secret Love” showcases a more subtle rhythm and energy than “Warrior” that aims to display a different style from the group. I see good things in the future for B.A.P, as do many other fans. For being so new and young, B.A.P is quickly making themselves well known to everyone in the K-pop world!

NEW IN KPOP

REVIEW:

ROOKIES

NU’EST,

Pledis Entertainment’s rookie quintet group debuted on March 15th, with their song “Face.” The dancing scenes in the music video caught my attention right away as it started with all of them on chairs. Although I wish they had done a little more dancing involving the chairs, the little they did wasn’t bad at all. Briefly we saw the members dancing in sync with one another then the next couple of shots kept one wondering which member was going to be abused next before returning to the five dancing together again. What sets NU’EST apart at the moment is the use of dubstep in the music, although we have had a small taste of it lately with some other songs, NU’EST incorporated it right into their music. That along with their impressive dancing makes them a group that bears watching to see what they will bring us next.

Nu’EST

Rookie group SPICA has recently released a

new single after a month of their debut with “Intently.” The music video for “Russian Roulette,” as the title goes, was released on February 7th of this year, and it showed a more mature and powerful look than ever. The confidence these girls show in this music video had me wondering for a second if they really were rookies, and the vocal performances didn’t fail to give me goosebumps. The song flows smoothly and the rhythm just makes you want to listen to it over and over again (which I ended up doing unconsciously).

SPICA

In my honest opinion Russian Roulette has no flaws. The image SPICA portrayed in this music video surely left everyone asking for more, and with such outstanding voices and great looks, who wouldn’t want to watch these beatiful girls grow out of their current status as “rookies”?

comparing and constrasting

music videos

BB Allll Leeii SSSSSSnn

Has your curiosity ever been piqued by the fact that there are so many comparisons to

be made among K-Pop music videos? It’s cool to see new idol groups take ideas from other groups that have been in the industry longer and incorporate them in their videos to spice things up. I see similarities in different K-Pop videos all the time and I think it’s exciting to see how artist take each other’s ideas and create something new for their audience to enjoy. Groups from JYJ and BAP to 2AM and the Wonder Girls, and many other K-Pop artists work very hard to put out colorful and eye-catching music videos for fans all around differ the world. However, you can’t help but to notice little details and small similarities in different music videos and think that maybe everyone is inspiring someone in a different way. I’m a BBC (in other words I’m a huge Block B fan), and when the video “Nalina” premiered I was floored with happiness. As young as they are, I’ve never seen so much talent and energy coming from one group my entire life. It’s like these guys are always ready to bust out with their rapping skills and show what true lyricist they are. In the video for “Nalina,” the guys are on a rooftop and there is a huge sign with their name shining brightly in the background. I’ve noticed that in a lot of videos K-Pop groups have huge signs of their names in the background while dancing. For instance, SHINee’s music video “RingDingDong” is similar to Block B’s “Nalina.” Everyone is on a rooftop and there’s a huge sign in the background with SHINee’s name clear as day for everyone to see. It has almost become a hallmark in K-Pop music videos for artists to show their name in signs or on advertisements in a video.

Shinwha’s comeback video, for the song “Venus,” for their tenth album was amazing and I was blown away not only by the choreography, but also by the meaning behind the video. The special effects, singing, and bullet time was just absolutely astounding, and I saw similarities with to 2PM’s music video “Heartbeat”. In terms of plot, the members are all dressed in black, confessing their undying love for this one woman. I could also see similar dance moves. In both videos bullet time was used and I could see the visual effects that were added to each one also. The black and white chess board theme was also used, with both colors used in both their outfits and in set designs. A lot of people have said that Shinwha and 2PM holds a similar vibes to their groups, and these videos give credit to that claim. Last but not least, Girls Generation and their label mates Super Junior also share many similarities in their videos. These two groups, under the label SMEntertainment, seem to have the majority of their videos similar to each other. Possibly because there are so many members in both groups that the result is similar concepts. I saw similarities in SuJu’s “Mr. Simple” and Girl’s Generations “The Boys” music video, both having low lights and the upbeat dance moves. Also, the strongest dancers, which includes Eunhyuk in Super Junior and Hyoyeon in Girls Generation, break out in a solo dance or are featured as leader in the group solo dance. Near theend of each the video there is a short pause and each member strikes similar poses and their name flashes up on the video. I know it’s a lot to take in and look at, but it’s just interesting to find new things when watching your favorite idol groups and making small com parisons between them. You should try it and see what you come up with.

Life in Korea..

CULTURE SHOCK 101 Upon Arrival:

Transportation:

What to Take:

Besides the jet lag, you might have a problem adjusting to the local cuisine. As yummy as it is, on daily basis that’s a lot of spicy and a lot of rice!

You use an easy card called TMoney which you can constantly add the balance to when running low. You buy it at a convenience store for 2,500-3,000 won.

Your smartphone. This baby will save you a million and one times.

Subway: is the easiest way to travel. Everything is in English and color coded. Just know the last station to make sure you catch the right direction of the train!

In Public: There is English nearly anywhere you go so getting around is fairly easy. Watch out for motor scooters and buses running the red light! Watch out for cars driving on the sidewalk, they will run you over if you’re slow! During the rush hour, you’re risking being squeezed into the train on the subway to the point where you cant move your hands . Personal space is absent here. Seating priority is also absent here. Only the “special” seats for elderly, disabled and pregnant women at the end of the cart have the power of “Don’t you dare sit here if you don’t qualify!” (You’ll see the signs for these seats).

Buses: Are a convenient way to travel when the subway won’t take you where you want to go, or is just out of your way. But be aware those bus drivers in reality are race car drivers!
