Danny: I meet someone and we have this positive conversation and lets say this person gives me positive energy right then this is something that money cannot buy. I’m not going to go halfway in this relationship; I’m going to go all the way.

HM: What about hobbies? What do you do besides music? Danny: I love collecting antiques, like vintage equipment. I love motorcycles, antique cars, stuff that will never depreciate. HM: So what is your most precious one? Danny: I wouldn’t say I have anything that’s the most precious but I love microphones. Danny shows HALLYU his passion for microphones made in the 40’s as he talks about the differences between the ones back in the 40’s and 50’s and the ones currently made. “…a lot of equipment and goods are being mass produced right now because it’s all about the money and the quantity as opposed to the quality. As time passes by you’re going to nd less quality goods and more quantity goods.” HM: In Seoul it gets very hot in the summer, can you recommend some good places to visit? Danny: There is a western bar, on the second oor, in a hotel in Busan near the beach. One of the hot spots of Busan is right on the beach; you have a great view of the shore. I love just chilling out and doing my Facebook or Twitter. I enjoy the top oor of Park Hyatt. They have a nice coffee shop there. HM: What about hot spots for tourists or people visiting? Danny: Anything with a nice view, I love a nice view. Whenever I have a meal I just love seeing nature, seeing a wide broad open view so I love the beach. I think my music represents the coast. When they hear my music its best acquired when you are in front of the beach or overlooking the shore.

HM: What are the top six items that you must have with you at all times?

Danny: Mobile device, for my social network. I love being acquainted with people. I just love people and friendships. It means the most to me; I always like to be available for my friends. I don’t care how busy I am I can have the busiest schedule but I always make time for my friends. Being too busy for friends is a big excuse… My designer sunglasses, and my premier credit card, the type of credit card I use is very important to me. I also like to have my computer with me.

Kpop Idols

and Charity In the K-pop industry,

it seems idols have no time to spare. Yet, tons of celebrities are active charity workers. Even as trainees, they participate in various kinds of charity work – from working locally to participating in big projects, idols always find the time to help out. Some famous idols are a part of World Vision, a Christian-based organization, that has idols sponsor a child, and send money towards their family. Park Hyun Bin, Girls Generation’s YoonA, FT Island’s Hong Ki, and Super Junior’s Lee Teuk are a few of the people involved with World Vision.

K-pop idols also come together to help one big cause. One month after the tsunami in Japan, PD Showtimes held a two-part charity concert in Thailand. Groups such as 2PM, Infinite, Hyun Joong, U-Kiss, Super Junior, MBLAQ, TVXQ, and Teen Top participated. In May of 2011, sixteen different groups held a concert in Japan for GFSC, a non-profit organization that helps children receive education. SHINee, FT Island, 2AM, f(x), 4Minute, Miss A, Secret, IU, Sistar, and ZE:A are a few of the singers whom were in the concert.

Hallyu: Can you give HALLYU a brief intro, where you are from and how you started in # JSA: My name is Jun Sung Ahn and I am a Korean American college student currently based in Chicago. I was born in Korea in 1993 and I moved to my hometown in America, New Jersey, when I was in 3rd grade. I began making Youtube videos last summer (2011) for fun. My friends and I loved this song “Lighters - Bruno Mars/Eminem and I thought it would sound pretty cool on the violin, so I played the song by ear and improvised the rap portion of the song. I put that up on Youtube and it began to collect some hits. Ever since, I’ve constantly been making new covers of popular songs on the violin.

! # ! I wouldn’t say I discovered my talents, but ever since loved what I was doing and that people genuinely enjoyed my violin playing as well!

! ! ! I believe that the violin is a very versatile instrument and that it can cover a lot of details that I want to express through music. I also think that the sound and other characteristics of the violin match with my own personality. ! ! I began to play the violin when I was 12 years old.

! ! ! ! I would describe my style as slightly playful! I enjoy listening or playing music and I try to have my audience feel the same way. People always tell me, however, that my playing is very human. Since I mostly do covers of vocal songs, people relate my violin sound to a human voice very often. Whenever I play a cover song, I try to bring out the most important essence of the song which usually matches the tone and the feeling the singer employs in the song. ! ! ! I am a very mediocre pianist and a beginning guitarist. ! ! ! ! " !

! ! The sound that I produce with my violin is the same sound that I imagine beforehand. Whenever I make a new video, I listen to the song I want to cover for a couple of days and imagine how I would play it with my violin. Then I play the song by ear and practice it to get the sound to match how I imagined it would be.

! on YouTube, have you ever imagined that you I never expected any kind of attention. I was very surprised when I began to gain more and more subscribers throughout the summer!

AZIAtIX

Aziatix is still riding the wave from the huge splash they made with their new EP AWAKENING which debuted at #1 on iTunes R&B/Soul charts in America, Japan, and Korea. They have used this momentum to become featured in Converse’s latest “Three Artists. One Song” campaign that has featured recent song collaborations from Foster the People, A-Trak, Gorillaz, Andre 3000, Kid Cudi, and many more.

nicky  Lee Hallyu: Hi! First of all, congratulations for topping the iTunes R&B/Soul charts in US, Japan and Korea! How has it been so far? Nicky: We feel so blessed. The response to “Awakeningâ€? has been so amazing. We just want to thank all the fans out there for making us number #1. Let’s talk about the new album which was released in May titled “Awakeningâ€?. What’s the story behind this album? Flow: “Nocturnalâ€?, we’ve traveled to many places. We’ve seen great things but we’ve also seen a lot of people going through struggles and hardships due to certain situations such as the economic crisis, natural disasters, etc. We and so we went into the studio right away and made this album which led to being an album of hope. This album also made us realize what we have and how we should be grateful and never take things for granted. After listening to “Awakeningâ€?, we noticed that this time it has a deeper meaning and the sound is very different to the previous album, “Nocturnalâ€?. What inspired you guys to write these songs for the new album?

Eddie: When we went back to the drawing board to make our 2nd album, we realized something. We realized that the world is in pain right now and that we can actually do something about it. So for AWAKENING, we really tried to zero-in on making a stand, taking responsibility and playing a positive role. Nicky: Just everyday life. The things we see...the things we experience...things we go through... I think that’s the reason why people can connect with our music. Flow: Sound wise, we always try new things and we love to incorporate different elements from different genres into our songs. What are your personal favorite track(s) from the “Awakening album and why did you choose that song? Eddie: I have to say If I Saw You Again. If I saw you again is ultimately a love song. Sometimes in life, you lose sight of what’s really important and as corny as it sounds, it’s all about love and that’s what this song is about. Nicky: All of them....haha... Flow: History! Everyone wants to reach their ultimate breakthrough goal, and it’s not easy. It’s a song of faith, motivation, inspiration, dedication, and hope.

Eddie  Shin There are two Music Videos released so far, which are “Speed of Lightâ€? and “Alrightâ€?. How does it feel like to be working with Director Oh again? Eddie: With Director Oh, he really understands our music and what we’re about. There’s a trust factor and we love working with him because he makes us comfortable and brings out the best in us. Your thoughts or feelings while in the process of producing this album? What was the hardest thing? What was the silliest? Eddie: ! # because we thought all the tracks came out great. Silly? # ! ! ! two or three weeks? That’s pretty amazing to me. Flow: !

" ! was hard because we went with what we felt and what we’ve seen throughout the year. If anything, our producer Jae Chong put in lots of work, he is the man. You guys are involved in the Converse 3 Artist 1 Song project. How does it feel like to be a part of a world known brand and working with two other huge artists like Jaurim and Idiotape? Eddie:

from working with them and I think we might be able to incorporate some of the things in our future tracks. The song #Peepshow, it shows how 3 different sounds are combined into one masterpiece. How do you think this song appeals to the audience and what’s the message that you are trying to tell? Flow: To be yourself. You were made and built a certain !

# for who you are and the only change you should focus on is on ways to become better and brighter. At the beginning of the song it started off with a strong rap from Flow, and you even rap some part of it in Korean. Was it easy to rap and compose in two different languages? It must have been somewhat interesting for you... Flow: Very interesting. I grew up listening to Korean music as well, and my Korean somewhat improved during this past year and a half so I was able to write a few lines in Korean. It’s fun! Since the Converse 3 Artist 1 Song Campaign is a huge success, have you ever imagined or thought of seeing your photo(s) been put up on billboards, subways, on the streets?

Flow Nicky: I been in other ads besides this one....but this is # ! same time so its pretty cool.

back with us on Aziatix.com! But, thank you for all the support and thank you to all the fans who show up to our tours.

Let’s move on to another topic. We are impressed on your efforts to interact with the fans and with the launch of Acast, it seems that Aziatix is totally on their A-game when it comes to fan-service. Can you tell us what is Acast?

Will there be any Aziatix Asian Tour this year? There are tons of your fans out there are waiting for Aziatix to come and perform at their country.

Eddie: ACAST is a time for the fans to get up close and personal with us. We wanted the podcast setting to be casual so that our listeners could listen to info here that they can’t get in formal interviews. Hopefully in the future, ACAST can serve as a bridge that connects our fans with each other as well. Who came up with this brilliant idea to set up a podcast? Flow: Aziatix! We wanted more interaction with our fans, we wanted to be there for them the way they’ve been there for us and just get to know one another. We heard that Aziatix are going on tour again soon. Care to tell us a little bit more about this? Nicky: All I can tell you for now is to keep checking

Nicky: Of course!...We will keep you posted as soon as we get the dates locked down!!!...See you in your country soon! You have been touring to a few countries in Asia and the United States respectively. Are there any particular thing that you guys miss the most or maybe food that you crave for? Eddie:

RD TIMES A CHARM? WRITTEN BY AMY SAIAUSKI

Every culture has numbers that hold special meanings or a cultural significance. For many Native American tribes the number four is sacred, while in China nine is a great number to have. For Koreans a number that plays a big part is the number three. The expression third time’s a charm may flit through a foreigners mind as they hear something asked not once, not twice, but three times, and on the third time the person has success? That is because it is thought that one out of three times will work or be a success. In general the rule of three occurs often in dating. A woman may turn down someone asking her out two different times to show the man she expects him to follow this rule and ask her a third time to show his sincerity in his interest in her. The third time she is asked she can say no again and it will be taken as she really means it or she can express her own interest in the person. This rule usually extends to being asked for a second date also. This rule of three is not limited to the dating scene so if you are told no there is a chance that the person is waiting to see if you are really interested in what it is you are trying to obtain. Take heart and never forget that the third time can be a charm.

TO GO PUBLIC OR NOT TO GO PUBLIC? THE ULTIMATE QUESTION In the K-Pop world, every fan has that one idol/bias they dream of dating and even marrying; in some cases it’s actually more than one idol. But what happens when the idol you love is officially off the market and is now dating someone? Written by Jmescia

SOU T H KOREAN BECOMES FIRST WOMAN TO WIN MAN ASI AN LITERARY PRIZE BY MARCU S IM

O

n March 15, 2012, Shin Kyung-sook was announced as the first South Korean and the first woman to ever with the prestigious Man Asian Literary Prize. She received the award for her 2011 novel Please Look After Mom, translated by Kim Chi-young. The novel centers around the search for an elderly mother, who was separated from her family by accident in Seoul Station. During the search, the adult children discuss their mother and come to the realization that they do not know their mothers very well. In discussing their mother, each character’s faults present themselves and they are scolded by the mere thought of their saintly mother. The novel contemplates existence, purpose and values. It is written in second person, a very unusual method of writing. Published in Korean in 2008, it was a blockbuster, selling over 1.5 Million copies in Korean alone. Translated and published in English in the United States in 2011, the novel received attention from all the major newspapers and literary circles. While praised for its storytelling, it was reviewed with great skepticism from many reviewers. The skepticism was mostly due to reviewers not understanding or the fear that American readers would not understand the cultural aspects of the novel.

While a blockbuster in South Korea, the book did not even make it to the top 100 list in the United States. However, with the attention of critics and Shin’s history of winning many major literary prizes in the past, Mom made the shortlist for the Man Asian Literary Prize, arguably the top literary prize for Asian writers for English literature. Its acceptance into the shortlist meant a tough task was ahead of the judges: Razia Iqbal (Host - Book Talk on BBC), Chang-rae Lee (Native Speaker - Winner, Hemingway Pen Award) and Vikas Swarup (Slum Dog Millionaire - Winner, Academy Award). Since its inception, Man Asian Literary Prize has had top writers as contestants and judges and this year was no different. But for 2011, the shortlist of books in contention included the first popular book. Clearly, the judges decided to that the popularity should not be a hindrance to judges a literary work of its merits. The announcement of Shin as winner gained considerable attention for the prize itself, a major but young prize that only started in 2007. Shin was the first woman to receive it, which put the literary prize on the map for being different than other prizes that have a history of selecting male authors for a great long time. There may be a movie deal in the future. Hallyu Magazine eagerly await new developments. ☆

FILM INDUSTRY

written by Robert

S

outh Korea, is rarely mentioned on international news broadcasts, only to be acknowledged, if even, for it's Nortern counterpart. However, the social phenomenon of the Hallyu Wave has gripped online forums and video hosting sites, slowly entering the consciousness of millions across the globe through K-Dramas and the even mo popular, K-Pop thanks to acts like BoA, Girls' Generation and Big Bang. Despite the explosive success of these areas of the famed Korean entertainment industry, one area has failed to make an explosive impact on the international stage; the Korean film industry. While K-Dramas amass cult followings and K-Pop sees artists perform to thousands of adoring fans at a time, many of which can't speak Korean, across the world, the Korean film industry proves to be a purely domestic affair to large degree. Bubbling away, mainly within the Korean Peninsula while dwarfed by the Hallyu Wave, South Korean audiences still appear to have a sense of pride in their films. Regularly, ticket sales of home grown movies peak higher than Hollywood's biggest film franchises like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings to name a few while Korean films like The Host, released in 2006, recorded over 13 million tickets sold compared to a population of 48 million suggesting that over a quarter of South Korea saw it but why isn't such demand for Korean movies replicated internationally? One of the problems faced by Korean films is simply the language. Some would beg to differ following the success of all-Korean music releases such as TaeTiSeo's Twinkle staying within the iTunes Top 10 album chart in the US in a country where English is the main language for four days, however, I beg to differ. Most films last anywhere within the region of an hour and a half to a full three where say an English film would be spent taking in the drama and emotion or alternatively the violence and gore while that time could easily be spent reading small text at the bottom of a screen during a Korean movie.

Korean dramas on the other hand are in sizeable chunks, with episodes lasting much less time and therefore making the language barrier less inconvenient. However, given the universal of nature of languages like English, Western movies have the ability to be released almost anywhere where as Korean films struggle to find a viable position worldwide. This in itself also raises an issue; the subtitling of K-Movies. The under-rated process of subtitling, worked on by those lucky enough to be fluent in both English and Korean is a lengthy process. Simply translating the dialogue of a 30 minute drama is a laborious task but to time that text with precision makes it all the more demanding .To replicate this process for a 2 hour long movie could take anywhere in the region of a week to a full month, time better spent working, sleeping or "fangirling" over SHINee's latest song or 2NE1's new album. As the Hallyu wave's driving force, K-Pop also plays a large role in explaining the failure of Korean films to be recognised by the non Korean audiences. With many such as Sooyoung from SNSD and Yoochun from JYJ having roles in KDramas, K-Pop fans flock in their thousands to observe their idols, allowing the expansion of these dramas while the film industry make use of those who are strictly actors or actresses, thus hindering it's expansion. Ultimately, as the Hallyu wave progresses and grows, the lack of demand for these films caused by the problems described only restricts the growth of the film industry further. So as K-Pop continues to devour the hearts (and bank accounts!) of many, the Korean film industry will continue it's work but after all, lack of popularity is in no way an indication of lack of quality.

K-POP covers

Where there are idol, there are fans. Where there are fans, there will always be fans who attempt to cover an idol´s song or dance. Even idols embrace covers for example, IU covered Big Bang member Taeyang’s songs on her album Last Fantasy. Idols also cover music of artists that aren't K-Pop singers; Big Bang covered a Maroon 5 song, Shinee´s popular song, “Juliette”, was based on a Corbin Bleu song, and Wonder Girls did a Kelly Clarkson song. Brining the tradition full circle, in 2011, Big Bang and 2PM attended a K-Pop dance cover contest in Brazil. Fans of Kpop, too, often do such covers. These fans typically cover a dance of a song or a song itself, rarely both. Songs covered tend to be slow and calm (due to the fact that songs of the dance genre are usually hard to sing to), whereas the songs whose dances are covered have a strong and energetic beat. The ideal dance to cover is something that is popular, upbeat, and easy to copy. Wonder Girls’ old song ¨Tell Me¨ fits all of the above criteria, and

covers of it became ubiquitous. Henceforth, what became known as the “Tell Me Syndrome” was born. Dance covers don’t require any special equipment; all a person needs is an environment free of obstacles and a dance. Because of this, in most dance covers the background is that of the average person’s house. The ideal song to cover is one that is slow, lyrical, and shows off vocal range. Most of IU´s songs are slow and very pretty, making them easy to cover. Since a great deal of K-Pop songs are upbeat and focus on dance, fans often use programs to auto-tune their songs or add instrumental accompaniment. Otherwise, if they choose not to cover such songs, they can simply record themselves singing using a camera. There are, undoubtedly, many ways for a fan to show his or her affection towards a specific song or group. Making covers, whether it be of a dance or of a song, can be considered one of the most difficult ways. Whichever type of cover is chosen, though, both types of covers show a fan’s love for K-Pop.

COVER SPOTLIGHT ST.319 - LOVEY DOVEY

ST. 319 is an independent dance group from Vietnam which focuses on K-Pop choreography. Their rendition of T-ARA’s “Lovey Dovey” has garnered almost 1,000,000 views on youtube.

SUMMER MAKES IT DEBUT...OR COMEBACK?

TRAINEE LIFE T

he Korean drama Dream High isn’t too far off with its depiction of how students prepare for being famous K-pop stars, showing ruthless training and extreme dedication, among other things. Students spend hours and hours on one single element of performance (like singing or dancing), and this evolves into years of training. The average to-be star spends two to five years preparing before having even one performance. For example, singers Jessica (Girls Generation), G-Dragon (Big Bang), and G.NA spent over 5 years training with their agencies. In fact, Jo Kwon of 2AM actually spent over 7 years in training! Different agencies have different methods, but let’s examine the life of the average trainee training under Cube, just to get a real taste of trainee life. At six AM, trainees get up to go to school like your everyday high school teenager, and are taught as if they are regular students. However, instead of gaming with friends or going shopping, trainees must spend all their free time working on the projects and assignments they are given from Cube. At five PM, trainees head over to the Cube building. Upon arrival, they can only enter the building once they’ve completed a fingerprint scan, and even then, cell phones and diaries are confiscated. Trainees are then given a meal ticket and head to the cafeteria.

Six PM is typically when the busiest part of the day begins. Trainees divide into three groups: preparation trainees, trainees, and project trainees. Classes range from one-on-one vocal training and hour-long choreography to even foreign language lessons. Formal training continues until ten PM, and students leave and arrive home at 11PM or midnight. Students are required to fill out a diary entry every day, and they write about what they learned in their lessons, and how they feel about what they’ve done that day. It’s typically two or three AM by the time the diaries are filled out, and trainees go to sleep. Then the cycle begins again.

“The average to-be star spends two to five years preparing!” Trainee life isn’t made up of dull, repetitive training. On Saturdays, things are switched up a bit. Trainees take part in health/sex education, character training, and even depression tests. Every other week, trainees are told to collect garbage in their neighborhood. Every month, trainees do charity work. There are hours on the weekends where nothing is planned even that time is spent catching up on lessons. That is a rundown on trainee life. Surely, the struggles of training have surely helped now famous idols become great. Big Bang trained from 7AM to 1AM, and they’re one of the biggest groups around today. -K'Sooie

Destiny

Finding Mr.

H

an Gi-Joon (GONG Yoo) is a failed travel agent, fired for his penchant for talking to clients about recent terrorist attacks and the frequency of tsunamis in the countries they want to visit, instead of the panoramic vistas and once in a lifetime experiences to be found. He resolves to start his own business, finding inspiration at a class reunion, of sorts, where the other men start a fight over which one of them had been the first love of a popular girl at school. Your first love is important because it’s the one you always remember and wish to see, he realizes. Finding Your First Love Agency is open for business! Seo Ji-Woo (IM Soo-Jung) is his first client. She is dragged in by her father who is frustrated with her rejection of a marriage proposal because she is still hung up on Kim Jong-wook, a man she met ten years ago, backpacking in India. Armed with a list of addresses, Gi-Joon and Ji-Woo set out to find him. When he wonders aloud how she could lose such an important person, he learns that Ji-Woo believes in destiny - if she and Jong-Wook are meant to be, fate will bring them together. When she inquires about his first love, she learns that Gi-Joon wasn’t brave enough to crash his first love’s wedding, despite a hasty return from living abroad in Osaka upon receiving the invitation.

Directed by CHANG You-Jeong is the author of the musical from which the screenplay is adapted. Finding Mr. Destiny references the original work by making Ji-Woo the stage manager of a production. The musical is incorporated quite prominently into the movie plot, which gives us a chance to see Im Soo-Jung doing a sexy song-and-dance number. Gong Yoo fans may be disappointed, as he plays the straight-arrow, neat freak Gi-Joon closer to Dr. Youn-Jae, his current television role in Big, character, rather than in the mold of Choi Han-Gyul, the devilish playboy that blasted Gong Yoo to super-stardom in First Shop of Coffee Prince. Though Finding Mr. Destiny sparkles a little less brightly than Coffee Prince, it ties up all its loose ends quite neatly, if not exactly the way we’d expected. After all, as Ji-Woo’s dad says, sometimes we have to take fate into our own hands if we want to find our true destiny.

Korean-Style Pancake

파전

It’s just about the hottest part of summer and you’re probably thin king, “Where’s the delicious snacks? Can’t you show us those?” Well, of course we can! But Pa Jeon ALSO a yummy snack! This Korean-style pancake is very popular (this is for you seafood lovers!). Pa Jeon consists a variety of seafood, scallions, and a few dashes of other ingrediants. This snack is an easy make and will leave you satisfied on your hot summer days!

Info provided by trifood.com

RECIPE INGREDIENTS: DIPPING SAUCE ¼ cup soy sauce ½ tbsp vinegar (distilled white) 1 stalk scallion, minced 1 clove garlic, minced ½ tsp gochugaru, red hot chili pepper flakes (optional) ½ tsp sugar 1 tsp sesame oil RECIPE INGREDIENTS 2 cups pancake mix 2 cups water 2 eggs 1 bunch scallions Vegetable oil Salt & pepper to taste To make Hae-Mul Pajeon also add: 1 cup oysters 1 cup chopped clams, fresh 1 cup baby shrimps

COOKING DIRECTIONS: SERVING 4 PANCAKES In a large bowl, mix pancake mix, water and egg until it's smooth. Add more mix or water if needed to get the consistency of a thin pancake batter. Stir in half the chopped scallions and season with salt and pepper. Let set for about 10-15 minutes. Heat a skillet over medium flame and a little oil. Pour about ¾ cup batter into the skillet, tilting the pan to cover the bottom. Sprinkle over a few of the scallions and let cook for 6-8 minutes until the bottom is lightly browned. For Hae-Mul Pajeon (seafood & scallion pancake): Sprinkle about ¼ cup of clams, oysters, chopped squid, shrimp or other seafood over the batter as you make each pancake. Flip and brown the other side and cook for another 6-8 minutes. Make sure all surfaces contact the skillet with a spatula. Wipe the skillet with the oily paper towel and repeat with the rest of the batter. When ready to serve, cut the pancake into 8 pieces resembling a pizza pie. For its dipping sauce, mix the sauce ingredients together. Serve pancakes warm.
