This financial year, as we started to unveil the results of our multi-million pound programme of investment, we’ve displayed our greatest ambitions for the communities where we’re based. This £9 million round of refurbishment and renewal is undoubtedly the biggest thing we’ve ever done, and we know — evidence and research tells us — that it’s money that will not only increase usage, but also introduce more new people, of

all ages and abilities, to a world of health and fitness they didn’t know was for them. This is a pivotal time for Halo. What happens in the next ten years depends on what we are doing now. At a time when cuts have meant many leisure organisations have felt forced to reduce the services they offer, we embraced an opportunity to think differently and to think harder and

smarter about how we could improve what we do. As a social enterprise and registered charity we can plough every penny of profit back into our work, so this had to be about increasing usage rather than letting it level off or worse decline. It had to be about creating centres and facilities that matched growing demand and which, in turn, attracted external sources of funding and raised more income to support the work we do.

In conversation with Halo’s CEO, Scott Rolfe 1

well as new gyms, workout studios, children’s indoor play zones, gymnastic centres, changing facilities and spa areas. This wasn’t, though, just about making the centres first class facilities where local people could work out and wind down. It was about making sure that our facilities reflect the growing service we offer and our vision for and commitment to “Creating Healthier Communities”. Our aim — how we judge our success — is by the numbers of people who are more active more often. When people walk through our doors we have the tools and the teams to work with them whatever their starting point, challenge, ability or age. We are operating in three counties now (Herefordshire, Bridgend County and Shropshire) and as we move into 2016 and beyond we

AND WHEN THEY WEREN’T WORKING OUT WITH US, OUR MEMBERS WERE FOLLOWING WHAT WE DO! Halo’s Twitter and Facebook pages took the Halo message to a platform of over 15,000 with 3000 Twitter followers (up 10% on the previous year) and 12,878 Facebook followers (an increase of 55% on previous year)!

are looking to build new partnerships and create new facilities. Read on and you’ll hear from the Halo teams about some of the highlights during this financial year. The impact on our growth, and on the communities where we’re based, is greater than the sum of all their stories. I want to thank them all for their flexibility and commitment, vision and support. We wouldn’t be facing such an exciting future without them and couldn’t have achieved so much this year without the commitment they’ve shown.

Investing for growth‌ The key to getting more people more active more often. In the previous financial year we transformed some of our facilities in Bridgend County. In this period we took on centres across Herefordshire. We have seen at Hereford Leisure Pool and Bridgend Life Centre the positive impact investment in the facilities has on attracting and keeping members and growing overall participation and income. During 2014/15 a £9 million investment plan (in partnership with Herefordshire Council) started with development works and refurbishments getting under way at centres in Leominster, Hereford and Ross.

3

Leominster was the first community to benefit from an improved centre when we completed our £1.3m refurbishment of the facilities which now offer: / JumpINGym — new indoor children’s soft play area // New larger gym growing from 51 to 65 stations /// Refurbished changing facilities and toilets //// Bespoke group exercise studio ///// Improved disabled access ////// Refurbished sports hall. The soft play area was on the wish list for hundreds of parents in the town who were after a safe place for their toddlers and children to exercise, socialise and get active. JumpINGym officially opened in February and offers a dedicated toddler area, disability swing, sensory swing and baby changing facilities. Staying in Leominster, the all-weather pitch at Halo’s Bridge Street Sports Centre had a rejuvenation and, as a result the hockey clubs had their best playing surface for many years.

4

Our attentions then turned to Hereford. In advance of the official launch of the new look Hereford Leisure Centre in the summer of 2015, we opened a new Regional Gymnastics Centre of Excellence at the centre in the Spring of this year with the help of a £500,000 grant from Sport England and the promise that young people will now be able to discover the power of recreational gymnastics, or have the opportunity to develop their skills if they want to join a competitive squad; we are even hoping to attract some adults back to the sport! Outside the building, we upgraded the athletics track with a cash injection of £2,000. The £4m refurbishment project continued into the new financial year and in the Summer of 2015, the centre unveiled its: / New larger gym growing from 85 to 100 stations // Refurbished squash courts /// Large group exercise studio //// A new extension to house JumpINGym — a new children’s indoor soft play area ///// Facelift to cafe, reception, indoor changing ////// New meeting room and relocated office space.

5

The £2.3 million refurbishment of the Halo centre in Ross-on-Wye demanded not only perfect planning but savvy people management. This centre is valued by its community and we didn’t want to lose one customer as a result of the unavoidable closure while large scale building work was going on. We needed to keep Ross up to date with progress, signpost swimming lesson pupils to other Halo pools, support gym enthusiasts at our temporary fitness facility which we opened in the town during the project, and offer other members incentives to travel to alternative Halo centres so they could enjoy their daily or weekly exercise fix. It is a mark of our staff’s commitment that members stayed with us during this period and as the financial year closed we were gearing up to the opening (September 2015) of the refurbishment of this stunning centre which will be home to: / New gym: twice the size of existing gym with 54 stations — double the current number of pieces of kit // New fitness studio — supporting personal training and an enhanced group exercise class timetable /// New sauna, steam room and feature shower //// Fresh new changing facilities ///// Refurbished swimming pool hall and spectator area ////// New reception area and office space.

Also during the year Bridgend County had a very special celebration of Bridgend Life Centre (the new name for Bridgend Recreation Centre) after the completion of the final phase of the £4 million refurbishment of the town’s old leisure centre. We were delighted to welcome Council Leader Councillor Melvyn EJ Nott OBE to officiate over proceedings and officially declare the refurbishment complete with its new 80-station gym, exercise studios, bespoke changing facilities, conference facilities, JumpINGym children’s soft play area, climbing wall, library, toning suite with its range of power assisted exercise machines, health spa, open plan reception and cafe area.

6

A whole number of national events are organised throughout the year to put a spotlight on everything from heart health to smoking, family life to men’s wellbeing. Halo gets behind them all with a range of initiatives designed to engage and support people across the community.

HALO IS ABOUT BEING IN TUNE WITH THE COMMUNITY AND THEIR NEEDS AND SUPPORTING NATIONAL HEALTH INITIATIVES AIMED AT GETTING MORE PEOPLE MORE ACTIVE MORE OFTEN,

says Alex Haines, Partnership Manager. 7

/ Men’s Health Week (June 2014) — designed to promote the vital role of preventative health to combat diabetes, cancers, heart disease and more. To mark this annual event we invited families and friends to help the men in their life to think harder about their health and to take more advantage of preventative health advice and the leisure facilities that can help them stay well. We celebrated by offering men across the counties a free seven day pass to sample what Halo has on offer. // We are proud of our continued success rate on our quit and get fit initiative which offers smokers a free 12 week support programme and discounted membership when they’re done. We used No Smoking Day in March and Stoptober in October to promote the opportunity and to launch a new poster campaign and we welcomed more smokers who signed up to improve their health.

/// Halo marked two health related awareness days towards the end of the year: World Arthritis Day in October followed by the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in December — annual international drives to raise awareness of the number of people living with the condition and disabilities. These events allowed us to promote the inclusive, accessible facilities and services on offer at Halo. We invited local people living with arthritis and/ or disabilities to visit one of our centres, pick up a complimentary seven day pass, and talk to our staff about services and facilities on offer to match their needs, health and fitness ambitions. On behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council we developed and launched a bespoke website promoting disability sport across the county — ‘Get a Piece of the Action’.

// Summer 2014 saw the launch of TEEN workshops at Bridgend Life Centre which were designed to give young girls across the county the chance to hear and learn more about beauty, health and fitness from a team of industry experts. The three day course added to our initiatives and commitment to engage with this hard to reach group so they stay involved in sport and leisure and so we can tackle issues related to self-confidence and body image.

… S RL / We were delighted to get behind Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, an initiative designed to break down the barriers (image, bad experience at school, isolation) that often prevent women and girls getting involved in exercise. As part of a national drive to encourage more women and girls in Wales to get more physically active, Halo also continued to support Sport Wales to trial a new initiative called ‘What Moves You’.

/// We supported local women in Herefordshire by offering free Race for Life preparation sessions. In the 6 weeks leading up to this annual charity race, Halo’s fitness instructors helped women improve fitness levels, boost their energy, and learn about warming up, stretching, and staying healthy while on the run.

We are committed to giving children and young people the opportunity to keep fit and build friendships, both crucial for their educational and life outcomes. We have delivered thousands of swimming lessons (6,754 to be precise, along with almost 900 places on our free learn to swim crash courses) in this financial year — squaring up to the frightening fact that a third of children still leave primary school unable to swim and demonstrating our determination to change that in the counties where we work.

We celebrated family life by marking National Families Week — the largest annual celebration of families and positive family values in the UK. During the May half term we encouraged families to take some time out together at Halo with a free family swim.

HALO IS ABOUT A HEALTHY FAMILY LIFE,

says Andy Walker, Aquatics Development Manager.

At a time when national trends warn of a fall in the number of children and young people taking part in exercise, Halo focused on a range of initiatives to ensure families had affordable, easy access to sport and leisure. Thanks to support from the Town and Community Councils some were even free through PLAY4LIFE. We kept pupils moving during the school holidays by offering a huge range of activities including swimming, arts, snorkelling, crafts, basketball, circus skills, gymnastics and rugby.

KIDS GOT MOVING WITH THE DISNEY ‘10 MINUTE SHAKE UP’!

During August we went into the Old Market Shopping Centre in Hereford and — with the help of some Disney magic — demonstrated to families the importance of physical exercise with our summer ‘10 Minute Shake Up’. Every day we invited kids to join in Disney inspired games and activities and were able to give both them and their grown ups advice on how keeping active in 10-minute bursts leads to better health. The initiative was part of the Change4Life and Disney summer campaign being supported by Halo Leisure and Herefordshire Council’s Public Health Healthy Lifestyle Trainer Service. It was designed to promote the fact that school-aged children need 60 minutes of exercise every day and to help families find easier, fun ways to get it. We gave away free swimming vouchers so families could take a dip at one of our pools and — when they did — offered adults the chance to claim a complimentary 7 day pass so they could try everything else Halo has to offer.

9

Price should never be a barrier to getting active, which is why we offer discounted prices for juniors, seniors, people with disabilities, full time students and individuals and families on low income. And in 2014/15 the reduction in pricing for these groups totalled £2 million. This was just one of many ways we worked to ensure access to sport and leisure. Other initiatives included: / Moving local people to their own mini marathon... The leap from the comfort of the couch to the challenge of a charity run can feel like a huge one. But Halo offered a bridge between the two via a Jog Club. Every Tuesday the running team at Bridgend Life Centre take dozens of runners of every age and every ability (including complete running newbies) onto the grass track and around the local area on a route designed for their age and ability and at a pace to suit their needs.

// Our continued commitment to the Welsh Government Free Swimming Initiative saw 19,233 attendances at the under 16 sessions and 83,967 in the over 60s sessions. /// Walking footie came to Bridgend County, with a new club playing this slower but equally exciting version of the beautiful game. Specially designed for those 50 and over who have no intention of giving up their favourite sport.

HALO IS ABOUT ACCESS, ACCESSIBILITY, PARTNERSHIPS AND GETTING THE COMMUNITY ON SIDE,

/// Libraries matter... Words and workouts are not your obvious partners but we continued to successfully offer such activities and events at the libraries located in our centres. ‘World Book Day comes to Halo’ was one example, when children came to Garw Valley Life Centre in fancy dress and Welsh costumes for stories in the library and some bouncy fun and parachute play in the sports hall.

says Carl Gregg, Health and Fitness Manager.

RUGBY SCORES AGAIN... Ospreys fans gathered at Bridgend Life Centre to meet their sporting heroes. More than 70 junior rugby fans enjoyed free arts and crafts, rugby coaching sessions, and an eagerly anticipated opportunity to get their memorabilia signed by the players.

10

/ Our fabulous new gymnastics facility in Hereford opened at the end of this financial year and offers young gymnasts the opportunity to develop their skills in a dedicated state of the art centre of excellence.

// Halo teamed up with organisations across Bridgend County to launch Halo Sports Stars, one of the most comprehensive sports projects for children in the region designed for 3 to 11 year olds. This programme is all about friendship and fun and learning new skills such as how to rock climb, ride a bike, play rugby or cheerlead, trampoline or do gymnastics (the list goes on — there are as many as 15 different options). We teamed up with sports professionals from outside Halo — including ballet schools, local sports clubs and the Welsh Rugby Union — to deliver a full and exciting schedule.

ACTIVITY AT HALO IS ALL ABOUT NEW EXPERIENCES AND NEW FRIENDS AND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT HELP YOUNG PEOPLE TO SHINE,

says General Manager, Richard Preece who officiated at the launch of the new gymnastics centre at Hereford Leisure Centre — which has been supported by a £500,000 grant from Sport England. 11

/// Teenage Fit Hit — Teenage Fit Hit allows teenagers (for a modest cost) to access all Halo’s facilities during the school holidays. The initiative saw scores more young people in the pool or on the badminton court, joining in with an exercise class or at the gym in their free time, investing in their health, making new friends and feeling their confidence grow. A total of 295 teenagers took up this offer during the summer of 2014. //// Students home for the holidays or on vacation from local full time education were able to enjoy three months membership for the price of two for the summer of 2014 — a great saving judging by numbers, and a popular way to ensure they kept active while away from their desk. Over 350 students took up this offer. ///// Over 1,000 local primary school children enjoyed taster sessions and activities during the Summer Youth Games held at Hereford Leisure Centre.

SUPPORTING LOCAL SPORTING TALENT — HALO SPORT FOUNDATION Our Sport Foundation (which recognises that 80% of aspiring athletes have limited funding to support their ambitions and the crucial training and competitions that help them progress to national and international level) supports athletes with free membership and financial support, who represent their county and country. The Foundation had continued support from its two Patrons, Rob Howley, one of Welsh Rugby Union’s national coaches and former WRU player, and six times swimming Paralympic Gold medalist, Sascha Kindred OBE. During 2014/15 147 athletes representing over 50 different sports (including disability sports) have benefited from more than £39,000 worth of Foundation support. In Bridgend County 9 local athletes receiving Sport Foundation support represented Wales in the Commonwealth Games in athletics, para-cycling, triathlon, lawn bowls, swimming and netball; Aled Davies, MBE and Team Wales Captain being amongst them.

We have been collaborating with GPs and local health organisations to deliver health programmes to tackle the time bomb of heart disease, obesity and diabetes head on. / 2014/15 marked the second year anniversary of the launch of the Healthy Lifestyle programme in Herefordshire aimed at supporting 40-75 year olds to be more physically active. Working with GPs across the county, we are using behaviour change programmes to support the health sectors preventive agenda. The National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) delivered through our facilities in Bridgend County was once again in high demand, supporting 1,186 people. NERS staff also went beyond the boundaries of the centres to give advice and guidance at events such as Step Out for Stroke Day and Enhanced Cancer Recovery Roadshow.

HALO IS ABOUT COMMUNITY HEALTH,

// We continued to deliver the children’s healthy lifestyle course MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do it!). MEND is an international organisation working with groups like Halo to tackle the growing problem of childhood obesity. With one in three children in Bridgend County above a healthy weight, the MEND programme helps local families become fitter and healthier. This is a very challenging programme (in terms of recruitment and retention of families), but the hard work is paying off and the scheme is making a real difference. Data published by Public Health Wales shows that the percentage change of Bridgend County children aged 4 to 5 years who are obese or overweight between 2012/13 and 2013/14 declined by over 4%, out-performing every other Welsh local authority and the national Welsh average 0.3% increase.

says Stuart Mitchell, National Exercise Referral Scheme Coordinator.

“ We know the health challenges that our communities face, and we believe we are part of the solution to inactivity. We are excited to see how things will develop as we continue to work in partnership with Public Health” says Jeremy Rowe, Partnership Manager

13

We know we have a role to play in the health of the counties’ workforce. Not just through our own innovative staff training and apprenticeship scheme (see page 9), but by supporting other businesses too and helping them prioritise and promote wellbeing in the workplace.

GET WITH THE PROGRAMME...

/ Workshops and guest speakers / Sony Wellness Centre / Advice and guidance from a fitness professional

While employers across the UK are looking at how to build bridges between workplace and wellbeing, Halo was delighted that the workplace wellbeing initiative it manages at one of Bridgend’s largest employers, Sony Tec UK in Pencoed, is ahead of the game and moving into its second year. This programme earned the national UKactive Flame Award for the impact it’s had on the workforce, with more staff taking on health and fitness initiatives at work and — as a result — making their health more of a priority.

/ Group exercise classes / Stop smoking support / Healthy lifestyle tips

We bring other company employees and members of groups/societies into our world of wellbeing, too, via our corporate membership scheme. This allows us to work with local businesses and clubs to promote better health, and to offer their employees and members discounted access to our centres. We currently have around 4000 people benefiting from preferential rates through corporate/group membership.

HALO IS ABOUT A HEALTHY 9-5 AND BEYOND,

Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of Britain’s greatest paralympic athletes, presents the national Flame outstanding achievement award to Halo and Sony Tec UK

says Jeremy Rowe, Partnership Manager who heard at the end of this financial year that the Halo workforce wellbeing programme in Bridgend had picked up an ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award at the UKactive National Flame Awards. 14

/ We’re delighted that this year we’ve formed a new partnership with Lifetime Training who’ll be helping us create a fully managed workforce development programme to enhance our current staff training and to create pathways for professional progress and development. Central to this new partnership is a tailored apprenticeship programme that will see the introduction of work-based training delivered across every department in Halo, which has already opened up job opportunities for 4 local teenagers.

// We celebrated /// To support the appointment of succession planning Scott Rolfe as our we launched our new Chief Executive internal management Officer. Our marketing team reworked the whole of Halo’s website, to make it faster, easier and more accessible for the rising number of people (706,922 visits during the year) who want to find out what they can do to improve their health and fitness at the click of a mouse. Feedback on the website has been brilliant. If you haven’t already, visit www.haloleisure.org.uk to see the finished result.

says Marketing Manager, Cathy Fletcher.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK IS SHAPING WHAT WE DO IN OUR CENTRES ACROSS THE THREE COUNTIES WHERE WE OPERATE

says Iain Hayes, Customer Services Manager.

Our eagerness to get customer comments perfectly reflects our policy on communication. Everything we do — from the creation of customer feedback forms and member forums to articles in the press, from mailouts to customers to exchanges on social media — is about a two-way communication process that keeps every customer in the loop and keeps us in touch with their needs and expectations. To strengthen this we introduced a tool called Listen360 to help us efficiently manage feedback and use customers’ direct and honest comments to improve business operations, correct shortcomings, and deliver outstanding customer service. Listen360 is telling us which areas of our business customers are pleased with and which may need work. It is a process that has helped shape DS AR d the refurbishments this year, and will REW ide an ice s dev vity in tre g ti in n c k shape everything new we al a re ce trac NE physic e leisu ZO MY t for all e of th bring to the table r id o ff ts e ou next year. We are constantly looking at new developments and how they can support our customers. For example this year sports science made simple came to Y WH Leominster in the form of MYZONE tracking technology. The system is a heart rate belt worn during exercise and allows members to see, in real time, what happens to their body — heart rate, effort levels, even the calories they’re burning — as they get moving in a fitness class, training in the sports hall, or working out in the gym. They can also wear the belt during exercise outdoors. The data’s recorded within the user’s online personal activity report, allowing them to log in at any time to see how close they are to reaching their goals.

THE STORY CONTINUES... The refurbishments have continued in the financial year 2015/16 with the centre at Ross-on-Wye reopening in the summer of 2015. The team will then focus on Bridgnorth Endowed Leisure Centre (which joined Halo in August 2015) and Ledbury Swimming Pool, both having major development works during 2016/17.
