Our organisation has delivered an ambitious, progressive programme of facility refurbishments in recent years and, while this work is ongoing, in this financial period several of the centres were completed and relaunched to the public. We’ve carried

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Just as we were welcoming people to our newly refurbished centre in Ross-on-Wye (shortlisted for a UKactive Leisure Centre of the Year award) we were celebrating 10 years of our brilliant and popular pool at our upgraded leisure centre in Leominster and bidding for Sport England funding to upgrade the Astroturf facilities at Halo’s other Leominster based facility, Bridge Street Sports Centre (and we learned this year the bid was successful). Three new additions to the Halo portfolio took the number of Halo branded centres to 20 in this financial period. Bridgnorth Endowed School and Halo joined forces to revive Bridgnorth Endowed Leisure Centre in Shropshire and then, at the start of the year, Halo took on the running of the public leisure facilities based at Lady Hawkins’ Community School based in Kington in Herefordshire. Finally, in November of 2016, we were thrilled to announce Halo had been selected to form a new partnership with Highworth Recreation Centre Trust in Wiltshire. We will be turning our attention to this centre next year when it will have have its own makeover. We are very much looking forward to developing these additional centres in the coming months. These new, exciting partnerships are an indication of our strength and epitomise the nature of our ever growing business and the benefits of being a social enterprise. The success of our ventures and the savvy of our teams have kept our balance sheet healthy, our bids for funding impressive (including £1.4m from Sport England), our leisure group in the spotlight, our visitors active and engaged, and, in turn, allowed us to invest millions into the future of this organisation.

CHAMPIONING COMMUNITIES We had over two million visits through Halo’s doors during this financial period and we carefully monitor the purpose of each — what visitors want and need from us. For some it is about a healthy weight, for others about recovery from illness, for many it’s about enjoying being active and making friends. It can be any number of things. We know that wellbeing should have nothing to do with wealth. That every single member of the communities where we’re based should be offered a way into sport and fitness whatever their income, their ability or age. Our membership packages are designed to make sure that happens, offering reduced fees for those receiving certain means tested benefits and special discounts for juniors, students, seniors and people registered with a disability. We continue to look at the community’s needs and introduce initiatives to meet them. For instance, this year we launched free swimming for active or ex members of the armed forces in our pools in South Wales. Halo is about community health and we collaborate with GPs and local health organisations to deliver programmes to tackle head on the time bomb of heart disease, obesity and diabetes. For example, our Smoking Cessation Programme (which supports those who want to kick the habit and get fitter) and our GP referral scheme have seen huge success. In Bridgend County alone we have had in the region of 3300 people formally signposted by their doctor.

FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS Halo is about a healthy family life, and we are committed to giving children and young people the opportunity to get and keep active and to build friendships, all crucial for their educational and life outcomes. Our membership offers — including ‘Teen Fit Hit’ and ‘Student Summer 3-4-2’ — continue to encourage more young people into our centres to work out, wind down and play sport. Our classes for new parents and for growing babies and toddlers and our three JumpINGym indoor soft play zones (in Bridgend, Hereford and Leominster) ensure we reach families at the earliest opportunity, so they can integrate fitness in the most fun way into their family life. Meanwhile we continue to support parents by delivering effective, affordable holiday activities to thousands of children every year and we offer a host of brilliant birthday party options to make their life a little bit easier. Crucially, our stunning pools allow us to offer free swimming assessments and in this financial period we delivered some 90,000 swimming lessons, squaring up to the frightening fact that a third of our children still leave primary school unable to swim and demonstrating our determination to change that statistic.


Drowning is still the third most common cause of accidental death in children and we are determined to give youngsters where we work the chance to learn to swim in a safe, supervised environment so they can play and stay safe near water. Our assessments often surprise parents who believed their children were confident in water, and our lessons give them skills which could, quite literally, save their life... When Halo told us about this free scheme we were delighted and it was so easy to apply. The instructor is amazing and is able to modify the lessons to suit Ellie. TOP OF OUR GAME

Halo is about sport and the opportunities that give athletes the chance to shine. The Halo Sport Foundation continues to support young people across Bridgend County Borough and Herefordshire (read more in panels, right) so they can pursue their own sporting dreams. Meanwhile, our new gymnastics centre of excellence at Hereford Leisure Centre — supported by a £500,000 grant from Sport England — extends our work in this arena by offering young gymnasts in the county the opportunity to develop their skills and join a competitive squad. In this financial period we saw the number of gymnasts taking part in preschool, recreational and competitive sessions more than double to over 650.

WELLBEING Halo knows wellbeing is part and parcel of any health and fitness programme, and we’re looking at new ways to engage with and empower people across our community with initiatives that promote both physical and emotional wellbeing throughout the year. Some of the latest additions are showcased in the stories here. We are also incredibly proud of our work with companies across Herefordshire and Bridgend County Borough who benefit from discounted Halo Corporate membership. It’s free to companies but offers every member of staff (and their partners, even if they don’t work for the organisation) access to all Halo has to offer for around £1 a day. Other organisations - like Sony UK TEC in Bridgend - invite us in to create a workplace-based wellbeing scheme. OUR SECOND TONING SUITE OPENED IN HEREFORD IN THIS FINANCIAL PERIOD AND WITHIN MONTHS WAS MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE WHO HAD FELT UNABLE TO EASILY ACCESS EXERCISE THROUGH THE GYM OR STUDIO CLASSES. THESE SPA-LIKE SUITES OFFERS SUPER-SUPPORTIVE, LOW-IMPACT WORKOUTS FOR MEMBERS LIKE ANDREA EVANS, A TEACHING ASSISTANT WHO FOUND THE TONING SUITE AFTER A PERIOD OF ILL HEALTH.

“I don’t really like gyms but I wanted to give this new facility a go. By the end of the induction on a Tuesday afternoon I knew this was for me and so signed up for membership and was back the next day, and three days a week every week until Christmas. My condition causes terrible pain in my face and head and so mobility wasn’t an issue for me (some who train in the toning suite do have mobility issues). What I loved was the sense of calm in the suite. It was so relaxing and I felt no pressure to keep up with anyone, and had no worries about over doing it. You work as hard as you want, at your own pace.” ANDREA EVANS

DEVELOPING OUR WORKFORCE Our staff are the lifeblood of this organisation. They meet visitors needs in a whole range of ways – bringing birthday parties to life in the sports hall or pool, bringing visitors together for sport, offering personal training for those wanting to get more out of their session, and support for those just getting back into fitness after ill health. Each year they organise scores of holiday activities for kids, deliver thousands of swimming lessons, thousands of exercise classes, and oversee thousands of visits, ensuring their expert supervision keeps every visitor safe and well while they’re working out or winding down. We know that while our refurbished centres are attracting more visitors than ever, it’s our staff that keep them coming back for more. In this financial period we’ve aimed to support our teams in a whole range of ways. They are now able to access a menu of online training courses (from safeguarding to customer service) through the Halo e-learning portal and more staff than ever took part in the Stars Programme, a scheme to help staff live the values of Halo to improve the customer experience and business performance. Following on from this was the Halo Hello Goodbye training delivered to all front line staff, supporting them to ensure a positive first and last impression for centre users. Meanwhile, to keep up with the ever growing demand for children’s swimming lessons (nearly 8,000 are now on the Learn to Swim programme) we trained 28 new swimming instructors and further upskilled our existing instructors. They included some of our new apprentices, coming on board with our fantastic apprenticeship training scheme (see right). And to support succession planning, our internal management development programme for aspiring managers was delivered to a further 11 staff across all contract areas, bringing the total number of staff who’ve had leadership training to 31. And last but not least we were so proud of our volunteer scheme this year. Volunteers from all walks of life gave 600 hours of their time to support children’s activities, gymnastic and swimming lessons and specialist functions like marketing.
