Leisure Leading Leisure Trust and Social Enterprise PERFORMANCE SUMMARY JANUARY – DECEMBER 2017

Anyone who had anything to do with Halo during 2017 – be it visiting our centres, seeing our posters, following us on Twitter or friending us on Facebook – will know our core mission was captured in the hashtag

#MORETHANJUSTAGYM

This was more than a clever catchline, it became in 2017 the watchword for what we’re about. It was competition that crystallised this mission for us at the start of the year. We saw growing competition in the core gym market – the most profitable bit of the leisure sector – across all the counties where we work. We welcomed that competition because we know it’s good for local people to have as much choice as possible when it comes to getting active. But the competition shone a light on what we do, too, and how much more we do and want to do when it comes to people’s health and wellbeing. It underlined that Halo is much more than your local gym, and focused our ambitions for the year and for our future. Make no mistake, at Halo we love our gyms and we’ve invested in making them the finest for people (tens of thousands of them) who want to get and keep fit. We take this sector of our business incredibly seriously. This year we signed a new partnership with The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, part of our commitment to using training providers and products verified by this professional body. As a result of this partnership our staff moved

every year, to see how many children (9000 in 2017) we are teaching to swim and how many kids are signing up to our school holiday activities (and how many are still coming as teens and in their 20s having been introduced to exercise early on). We’re just as passionate about our work with health professionals, how we’re engaging and involving

for a marathon. We find men and women of all ages, all abilities, all backgrounds, doing all sorts of activities in the pool, studio, court or pitch, all supported by our professional fitness team who are trained to help them meet their individual goals. This year research from Sport England listed Herefordshire as one of the counties seeing a real increase in the number of local people participating in physical activity since 2007, and

we’re honoured to be part of that story. That’s what we mean when we say we’re more than just a gym, and it’s the put together plans for the future. The confines of an annual report can’t really do justice to how it works in practice, so I’ve chosen a selection of highlights, events, campaigns and celebrations that made us proud during these 12 months, and promoted health and wellbeing to so many more people in the

OUR JANUARY HIGHLIGHT We started the year by inviting a new round of applications for

funding from the Halo Sport Foundation. This initiative has proved to be so powerful for athletes in Bridgend County Borough

and Herefordshire since it launched in 2013 and we’re proud that our Patrons – swimming Paralympic medallist Sascha Kindred CBE and Welsh sporting hero, WRU’s Rob

Howley – are still at the helm and share our ambitions for what the Foundation can achieve. They know, as

we do, that as many as 80% of talented athletes have limited resources to support the cost of the training and competition they need to progress. The Halo Sport Foundation meets their need by offering

financial awards and free training opportunities to successful applicants. This year we’ve supported over 230 athletes (some of them pictured, right) through awards totalling nearly £90,000 plus access to free training facilities at Halo Centres.

HALO’S SPORT FOUNDATION ATHLETES PICKING UP THEIR AWARDS AT THE 2017 CELEBRATION EVENTS.

OUR OPEN DAY EVENTS We run these across the year in every area to allow visitors to explore all Halo has to offer. For example every quarter we launch new group exercises to introduce our customers to new ideas and activities. They are a great way for people who normally swim or gym to mix up their established routine and give group exercise a go.

3 5

NATIONAL CAMPAIGNS Halo was proud to be a recognised supporter of Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign, promoted in February of this year shouting out to all women and girls in a bid to shake off misconceptions about exercise (it’s not like school PE, it’s not about being a size 10, it’s not competitive...) and to encourage them into our centres to enjoy the freedom that comes with being healthy. This was another great example of how our complimentary seven day passes (see point 4!) – that free opportunity to try out Halo – can help to break down barriers and encourage new people to have a go.

OUR FITNESS FREEBIES!

2

4

We continue to offer free seven day memberships to ensure everyone in the community can have easy access to our welcome, support and advice as they try out our facilities, often for the first time. This leads to so many new members taking part and enjoying the long term benefits of being more active.

OUR SPORTING CHAMPIONS

We are always proud to welcome true heroes to our leisure centres. As I write one of our members is off to the Invictus Games trials after returning from Afghanistan with post traumatic stress disorder (watch this space for news of his success). But this year we have to celebrate the success of Herefordshire swimming Paralympian Sascha Kindred CBE – Patron of our Sport Foundation – who retired in 2017 after 20 years competing in six Paralympic games and winning 13 Paralympic medals including seven golds, 19 World Championship medals, 26 European medals and four World Championship medals. WHAT A CAREER! HEREFORDSHIRE He’s inspired us and so many athletes across Herefordshire HERO SASCHA KINDRED CBE and around the world. We feel proud that our facilities DISPLAYS ONE OF HIS MANY MEDALS (especially our pools) played a part in his outstanding achievements.

#MORETHANJUSTAGYM

6

OUR FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHT We’ve run some brilliant special events in 2017, but one of our favourites was the Autism Awareness Event at Ogmore Valley Life Centre in Bridgend County. We know children with autism can find it challenging to get fit, too often because their needs (when it comes to social communication or fitting in with group activities) are often misunderstood. In February half term we invited people to an Autism Awareness day. Halo’s Ivor Anthony, Fathers Reaching Out, Bridge FM and Mentoring Plus UK demonstrated how important sport and physical activity can be to promote the health, wellbeing and confidence of children on the spectrum and parents were invited to meet and speak to health professionals in the arena, while children had a go at some fun and games. This was good for everyone, including our staff who were able to reflect on what we offer for children with autism and other special needs.

7

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE STATUS

From the corridors of power to businesses around Britain and the shopping streets of the UK, the impact of social change is now part of the conversation. Recent research revealed more than four in ten employees want to work for organisations that have a positive impact on the world – the figure’s higher for those born between 1981 and 1996. And at the same time people want to buy from and support organisations that do the same. At Halo we are so so proud of our social enterprise status which helps us stand out as more than a gym. Members and partners know that every penny of profit (see results pg. 22) is invested back into the work we do and the support we offer.

SPORTS CLUBS BASED AT HALO HELP CREATE A LIFE LONG LOVE OF ACTIVITY

1

OUR MARCH HIGHLIGHT

89 clublinks

We celebrated the launch of our new world class hockey pitch at Halo’s Bridge Street Sports Centre in Leominster in March 2017. This refurbished pitch – created with the help of £248,000 National Lottery Funding – aims to be a catalyst for attracting and training new players across Herefordshire and Shropshire, and bringing back those who haven’t picked up their hockey sticks for some years.

OUR SPORTS CLUBS (SCORES OF THEM)

We enjoy hosting and supporting scores of sports clubs in all the areas where we work, including over 150 clubs for children. In 2017 we launched a new Halo support programme in Bridgend County Borough called Club-links. It’s designed to support the 50 plus organisations bringing sporting activities to hundreds of men and women, young people and children at our eight centres in this particular county. The programme kicked off with a surgery advising sports clubs on funding opportunities with Sports Wales’ Community Chest, and Club-links will be running events focusing on everything from recruitment to advertising, coach education to volunteer management. We’ll be developing this programme – it will be supported by its own bespoke website in 2018 – as a result of the success we saw in this financial year.

10

OUR ACTIVE TOGETHER SCHEME

This year we signed up 23 new companies onto this workplace wellbeing programme which sees us working with them to keep their workforce fit and active. It means every member of their staff (and their partners) can enjoy discounted membership and access all Halo has to offer for around £1 a day. In 2017 4,700 members benefited from discounted rates through their employer,

club or group. This is an investment that pays off for us in so many ways, extending our message to more people (and their families) and promoting workplace wellbeing which has, of course, a knock on effect on family life and the local economy. The companies who sign up tell us, over and over, that they feel the benefits on their own bottom line as a result of a stronger and healthier team.

11

OUR APRIL HIGHLIGHT We love it when our members combine keeping fit with fundraising, and April saw a great example of this when users of every age and every ability took part in Swimathon, the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim for cancer charities.

12

‘‘ 1

We may be more than just a gym but we do love our gyms and in 2017 saw members tot up an amazing 620,817 workouts. As well as our ongoing refurbishment programme (which has seen bigger, better gyms appearing), we’ve invested in the kit inside. For example at the end of this year we introduced new style bikes for indoor cycling fans and new treadmills with television technology and what’s called a ‘virtual active’ programme that aims to ‘transport’ runners to far away cities and landscapes and so turn indoor exercise into an outdoor adventure!

13

OUR MAY HIGHLIGHT

We know the lasting benefits of exercise on young people’s physical and mental wellbeing. This year we saw nearly 13,000 children enjoy sport lessons at our centres, but we want to reach more. In May our special 3-for-2 months membership offer for college students and our Teen Fit Hit programme (giving teenagers unlimited access to Halo’s facilities during summer months for no more than 40p a day) attracted more young people than ever into our centres. In fact both initiatives proved so popular they’re now a firm fixture in the Halo annual calendar.

14

OUR SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES This takes some organisation and investment, but our holiday activity programme – including the mega six week programme across the summer vacation – ensures hundreds of children can enjoy the chance to stay active, make

15

new friends and discover new activities. It’s brilliant for them, popular with working parents and carers, and teachers tell us that it is a great way to tackle the ‘deskilling and inactivity’ that can happen during the school holidays.

Some 9000 pupils came to Halo to learn to swim in 2017 (some 62,920 lessons helped them on their way) via a programme that continues to be one of our greatest achievements. However we know that many other children still leave primary school without this essential life saving skill so we’re

OUR SWIMMING LESSONS

not going to stop shouting about and supporting our swim schools in every way we can. In 2017 that involved converting an old diving pool in Hereford into an additional development pool to meet demand. We also launched a recruitment programme to attract and train new swimming instructors.

#MORETHAN JUSTAGYM

16

OUR BABY AND TODDLER PROGRAMMES Halo has become the go-to place for new parents, thanks to our menu of activities to get the family active from an early age. A range of swim classes for parents and children (from four months to four years), new-for-2017 Mini Sparkles (see picture below), junior gymnastics and our JumpINGym indoor soft play zones have proved brilliant ways to promote the benefits of exercise from the youngest age.

SPOTTED AT BRIDGEND LIFE CENTRE – HELEN JENKINS, FORMER WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPION enjoying a mum and baby workout at our Pram Fit session.

17

OUR JUNE HIGHLIGHT

Local residents were invited to celebrate the reopening of our centre in Ledbury which has benefited from a £2.3m spend to upgrade and extend the gym, introduce a brand new exercise studio, makeover the reception and changing facilities and pool as well as build a new sauna and steam room.

1

18

OUR PERSONAL TOUCH

One-to-one training is no longer the luxury of the rich and famous. We know these popular personal sessions motivate members’ fitness regimes while helping them meet personal goals. However we also know not everyone can afford personal training so during 2017 we offered all new members complimentary one-to-one sessions with one of our fitness team when they joined and also at weeks 6 and 12 to help them settle into their exercise routine and get the most out of the time they spend with us. And it worked...over and over again.

OUR BELIEF THAT PRICE SHOULD NEVER BE A BARRIER TO PARTICIPATION

19

Easy access to leisure is at the heart of what we do and what we’re about, and evident in our pricing policy. We delivered 157,478 discounted sessions this year as a result of those accessible pricing schemes, worth some £1.6m to the communities we serve. We know there is more to do here, too, so worked with job centres to promote our concessionary pricing. Students, juniors, seniors and people with disabilities also enjoyed reduced rates. We know parents prioritise their children’s fitness over their own which is why we have launched the Active Families Scheme, giving parents and carers with children on a Halo coaching course a discounted membership to encourage them to get active too.

OUR JULY HIGHLIGHT

The starting gun was fired for Halo’s first Furlong Fury, a new launch for us in the phenomena that is obstacle racing. Months in the making, it got off to a fabulous start in July 2017 despite the rain (we knew it was meant to be muddy!). Almost 600 braved the inclement British summer weather and ran a specially designed 24 furlong 5k route around Hereford’s beautiful racecourse, obstacles ranging from monkey bars to mud baths. It was so successful it looks set to become an annual event.

OUR EXERCISE CLASSES

22

23

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. People who exercise together exercise for longer. That’s why we spend so much time planning and promoting our exercise classes which cater for every age, taste and timetable. There were a staggering 262,739 group exercise classes held at our centres across 2017.

2

OUR EXERCISE LEADERS

I add this here because we are constantly bowled over by their energy, enthusiasm and the way they embrace our ambition to get people more active more often by skillfully tailoring activities to suit our members’ individual needs. Take Laura Lowe, who teaches Fitsteps in Halo centres in Herefordshire. This year she was voted Fitsteps Community Instructor of the Year after a public vote saw her make the finals in a competition involving hundreds of instructors from across the South of England. “I love what I do and I love the people whose lives I get to share in,” she said when she was presented with the award.

24

OUR AUGUST HIGHLIGHT We hit a grand 21 this month when we were invited to take on our 21st facility – a gym and spa based at a retirement village in Hereford. Fortis Living’s Rose Garden is dedicated to creating a healthy community and has seen

Halo’s commitment to making health and fitness accessible to all. This is an exciting addition to our portfolio and allows us to draw on and enrich our experience working with older members of our community.

25

OUR HEALTHY PARTNERSHIPS

The figures above from our GP-referral scheme demonstrate the ultimate win win for good health from these kind of programmes, and we’re looking to extend this one further. This year we’ve also worked with an increasing number of people recovering from accidents and illness who needed support to return to optimum health via a programme we design to suit their needs and meet their lifestyle, health and mobility goals. It’s this kind of joined up thinking which can save local economies so much money, and which can have lasting health and wellbeing benefits long after those initial consultations.

26

PREVENTATIVE HEALTH IN ACTION

‘2

In Bridgend County we’re involved in the delivery of a GP project addressing cardiovascular disease, targeting people aged between 40 and 64 who haven’t seen their GP for a certain period. They are invited in for a health check to assess their risk of heart attack or stroke in the future. Some 1,300 assessments have seen 194 people rated as a moderate or low risk and referred to Halo’s 12 weeks of free exercise and nutrition advice programme.

THE NATIONAL EXERCISE REFERRAL SCHEME This partnership with the health service (featured on the previous page) which sees GPs refer patients to Halo for additional support goes from strength to strength, with 2017 seeing the highest participation rate with over 30,000 visits across the 12 different sessions we run (including specialist activity focusing on cardiac rehab, falls prevention, Parkinson’s) across all venues. We were delighted this year when Welsh Minister for Social Services and Public Health Rebecca Evans (pictured right) visited Bridgend Life Centre to see first hand how the scheme works. She was joined by Huw David, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council and Cllr Phil White, Cabinet Member for Social Services and Early Help.

A WORD FROM...OUR MANAGER OF THE YEAR “We know when people think fitness they safety or reduce crime). It might involve think physical fitness. They don’t always us working with local care homes who appreciate the power of the social side allow us to bring residents into Halo for on their wellbeing. OUR SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHT

Work continued in rolling out our Dementia Friendly Swimming project in Halo pools. We know that for people living with dementia life can be isolating and these sessions aim to counter that by welcoming those suffering from dementia and their families and friends, allowing them to enjoy the pool together and make new shared memories.

HEALTHY AGEING We know – the headlines continue to shout about – the ageing community in the UK. But we also know the importance of healthy ageing and work hard to make sure we take a lead on that agenda. I’ve already mentioned dementia friendly swimming (above) but there were so many examples of that work on show at Halo in 2017. For example we got behind Public Health England’s One You Wednesday, a national campaign around September 2017’s National Fitness Day which was designed to get adults (particularly those over 40) more active via free sports sessions. Meanwhile we launched and promoted adult group swimming lessons,

29

recognising many adults (including many older people) don’t feel confident in water and need gentle, stay-in-your-depth sessions to help. Our walking football and netball clubs and indoor bowls attract scores of locals wanting to stay involved in sport. And of course we have our toning suites at Hereford and Bridgend, fitted with state-of-the-art, power-assisted toning machines to help people facing mobility issues get and stay fit in a spa-like gentle gym with support on hand.

“When I signed up to Halo’s toning suite I knew weight gain was impacting on my health. I was over 25 stone and was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure and the GP wanted me to lose weight to prevent both becoming worse. Slimming World helped me lose the weight, but I felt untoned and unfit and yet I believed the gym would be too much for me. The toning suite, though, was brilliant. The Halo team explained how the machines worked and what muscles they’d exercise and before long I started to lose inches, feel my muscles and skin tone up, feel my clothes getting looser and my mobility improving. And everyone is so nice. I’ve met some lovely people. I’m down to 16 stone and a size 18 (and have trimmed 36 inches off my bust, arms, tummy and more) and I’m off all my medications for diabetes and blood pressure. When I saw my GP he just looked at me and asked, ‘What have you been up to?!’ He was so pleased. I’m in the toning suite three times a week, and going to exercise classes (like Zumba and Aqua Aerobics) Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.”

OUR ACCESSIBLE FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

Our toning suites (see Sarah’s story, left) are only one example of our investment here. We have adaptable cycles for hire in Herefordshire, hoists to help people into our pools, and dementia friendly sessions (see point 29) for those who need extra support (or quiet) while they enjoy a swim in the pool. There are activities for people with learning disabilities (like the brilliant Wiggle It class) and we also continue to work with charities like Level Water who deliver one-to-one swimming lessons to children with physical disabilities. This year one of their pupils (Thomas pictured below, centre)) raised over £2000 via a sponsored swim for the charity that taught him!

OUR OCTOBER HIGHLIGHT

‘‘

We were delighted to be appointed managers of the Severn Centre in Shropshire this month. Of course this wonderful facility in Highley in Shropshire is not new to our team. We’ve been supporting them for some time, and been right behind the fundraising efforts to refurbish and reopen their fabulous outdoor pool (a success, refurbished and reopened in the Spring of 2017). The team in Highley are incredibly excited about what we have in store for the site in the months and years ahead.

“I joined Halo as a Gym Instructor, originally on an eight-week work experience programme through the jobcentre. Then Halo invited me to take the Level 2 Gym Instructor course and the NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification). A few weeks later I was shadowing a Gym Instructor and then, once qualified, I was off – working in the gym and at poolside. I was surprised and pleased at the number of opportunities offered and support given. These are national qualifications I could take with me anywhere. I’m now hoping to do the Level 3 Personal Training qualification and, one day, develop my own practice. It’s great to be part of the Halo team.”

OUR APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

The leisure and fitness industry is growing admin, accounting, customer service and fast, fuelled by a growing interest in health more. In 2017 we launched open events and wellbeing and organisations like ours for young people who wanted to find out are recruiting, training and developing more, and saw some brilliant apprentices young men and women to become go through the training programme (see professionals in this field. Not just with Chris’ story above), young people aged jobs in sport (from lifeguards to personal 16-25 who developed a passion for our trainers) but with jobs in HR, management, industry and what it can achieve.

“We know that our most powerful resource is the people we employ and the £100,000 we spent on their training in this financial year (customer service to coaching, health and safety through to leadership and management) was one of our most important investments. We currently have 750 on our team, full, part-time and our apprentices (see point 35). We employ people who love and want to live our values; people who understand it’s not just what you do but how you do it that matters and who share that understanding with customers; people who feel valued and who know they can make a difference to others every day, and in so many ways.”

We are delighted to be home to six community libraries across the counties where we’re based and we saw over 400,000 visits to them in 2017. This reinforces our role as a community hub and allows us to reach more people, more easily, with news of our events, activities and health programmes.
