Q3 2018 DDoS Attacks Report This report summarizes the latest DDoS attack trends that have occurred in the third quarter of 2018.

In the third quarter of 2018, it is noticed that the botnets were responsible for most of the DDoS attacks including new versions of Mirai and Gafgyt botnets. It has been seen exploiting of known vulnerabilities in SonicWall and Apache Struts in late August and early September. The number of unique targets meanwhile increased by 63 percent, worldwide.

TOP GEOGRAPHICAL TARGETS According to the findings, the top 3 DDoS targeted countries were China, the United States & Australia. The attacks were distributed across the days of the week and the most popular days were Saturday and Tuesday of the week.


DISTRIBUTION OF DDOS ATTACKS BY COUNTRY IN Q2 AND Q3 2018

For the first time, Australia held the third position under the top three most targeted countries. The most targeted victims in Australia were hosting services and cloud computing platforms China and the U.S. remained first and second respectively, while Hong Kong dropped down to fourth.


DISTRIBUTION OF DDOS ATTACKS BY TYPE IN Q3 2018 In the third quarter of 2018, it is observed that SYN Flood attacks held the topmost position with 83.20% followed by UDP attacks with 11.90% and HTTP attacks with 3.20%.

Other types of attacks: HTTP is at the third position, TCP is at the fourth position and ICMP is at the fifth position respectively.

It is noticed that share of SYN flood attacks has grown to 83.2% from 80% in Q2 and 57% in Q1 2018.


DISTRIBUTION OF DDOS ATTACKS BY WINDOWS VS LINUX BASED BOTNETS IN Q2 & Q3 2018

In the third quarter of 2018, it is noticed that the ratio of Windows-based DDoS botnets has been decreased and Linux based DDoS botnets increased. Linux based botnets are increasing over the period of time. Linux based botnets were increased in Q2 2018 also.


NOTABLE DDOS ATTACKS OF Q3 2018 In the first week of July, Blizzard' Battle.net servers were down for almost three days. In the last week of July, Ubisoft was hit by the DDoS attack on its server due to which players were unable to connect to the games. In the month of August, the PokerStars website was hit by the DDoS attack due to which tournaments was cancelled and after this, the PartyPoker was also hit by the DDoS attacks

In the second week of September, The University of Edinburgh was hit by the massive DDoS attack.


CONCLUSION

Compared to Q3 of last year, the number of DDoS attacks slightly increased due to the rise of new attacks in September. Â It is concluded that "Saturday" was the most dangerous day of the week in the third quarter of 2018. Tuesday was at the second position and Wednesday was in the third position. The longest attack in Q3 lasted 239 hours, almost 10 days while in Q2 2018, the longest DDoS attack was for almost 11 days (258 hours).
