Workshop overview Interaction is an intensive, eight-day design workshop with the goal of researching the convention of digitally-driven design methods, interactivity and manufacturing technologies utilising workshop resources and Red October’s factory, which is now in the most dynamic developing heart of Moscow. This building plot will become an interactive platform during the workshop, between citizens, landscape, architectural shapes, the building plot itself and its surroundings.

The main core of the Interaction workshop will be the development and implementation of innovative and experimental design-and-build strategies through site-specific spatial prototypes, prior to manufacturing the pavilion at a one-to-one scale. We will be using a large number of special 3D software and informational design tools including Grasshopper(Rhino), Rhino-Phython-Script, Processing, vvvv. What we produce with this software will be adapted using CNC fabrication equipment, motor controllers, X-box Kinect cameras and sensor technologies.

For a Live Physics engine for interactive simulation, optimization and form-finding directly within Grasshopper we used plugin Kangaroo. Daniel Piker:” One of the things it allows is the virtual use of some of the physical form-finding techniques for design that were pioneered by architects/engineers such as Frei Otto and Antoni Gaudí. They made use of a principle discovered by Robert Hooke : When a flexible chain hangs freely its elements are in pure tension, and when this form is flipped vertically it produces a form of pure compression, which is ideal for constructing masonry arches, an idea which can be extended to chain nets and stone vaults.” From http://www.grasshopper3d.com/

Analog
After researching topological precedents for developing ideal and efficient membrane-like forms, we immediately began analog modeling experiments using tensile and rigid materials. The objective was to develop a hybrid construct that was structural and flexible to investrigate further digitally.
From Analog to Digital After collectively deciding on the few models we wished to investigate further, the next step was to transform the experiment into a digital format using Rhinoceros, Grasshopper and Daniel Piker’s Kangaroo plug-in for Grasshopper.
Digital We had the same competition within our claster for the most interesting digetal form. How you can see, there was variotable row of form from everyone.
Geometry Following our form-finding research, the next step was to determine real material and geometric constraints so that we can design and fabricate the final construct. As we used minimal surface logic to find our forms, we turned away from developing a tensile structure and moved toward developing geometric components that are connected to create a surface and structure. We experimented both with static geometric assemblies as well as dynamic and transformable assemblies.

Site In heart of Moscow, Red October’s factory. This building plot became an interactive platform during the workshop, between citizens, landscape, architectural shapes, the building plot itself and its surroundings. We found the most interest place, it is the main entrance ito Strelka (institue).
