FUEL FOR THOUGHT

W

hile fleet operators take on the challenge or struggle, depending on your point of view, of incorporating eLCVs into their fleets, another fuel source is garnering more interest – hydrogen. Well, that’s according to Paul Hollick, chair of the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP). As he says in a recent press release “the arrival of the Vauxhall e-Vivaro Hydrogen represents probably the first viable opportunity for van fleets to adopt hydrogen. The advantages are a fastrefuelling time, 250-mile range, and a purchase price as low as £32,000.” However, he goes on to state that “the list of disadvantages is long though, starting with a refuelling infrastructure that is so small that it barely exists.” That is true for the moment, but infrastructures can be built, and with the right incentives, investment and governmental influence, built quickly. While the hydrogen argument is weakened by the lack of fuelling infrastructure, what is not beyond doubt is its capability to deliver the kind of performance that fleets need if they are, to quote Paul Hollick again, move “to progressing zero emissions van deployment.” For example, First Hydrogen’s recent trials of its hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) with fleet manager Rivus showed encouraging results. The converted MAN eTGE demonstrator clocked up over 700 miles of testing, totalling over 47 hours of driving. Rivus tested the van both empty and loaded to 90% of its maximum weight capacity, reflecting the way vans would be used in the real world to provide a more realistic indication of performance. Trial analysis revealed the van achieved 500km (311 miles) on the 10.3kg tank of hydrogen. This makes hydrogen power a viable option for fleet operators that cover a high mileage and may not have the opportunity to re-charge a battery. Price comparisons were made using hydrogen, to better understand the total cost of ownership (TOC), versus diesel and battery electric vehicles. The comparisons reflected the then current cost of hydrogen. At 31p per mile the hydrogen FCEV LCV was appreciably more expensive than a diesel or electric equivalent, at 22p and 18p respectively. However, the Hydrogen UK Transport Working Group predicts fuel costs are expected to decrease to £7.47 per kg by 2025 and as low as £4.09/kg by the end of the decade, which in the case of First Hydrogen's vehicle equates to a cost of 13.7p per mile. Now that sounds very persuasive and another reason to consider hydrogen as a fuel to be reckoned with, if we are to move towards Net Zero with any momentum.

NEWS Weigh to go Axtec, the specialist manufacturer of axle weighing systems, has gained approval to self-verify its Series 4000 and Series 5000 dynamic weighbridges. Utilising its two specialist weighbridge test vehicles and highly trained staff, Axtec is now authorised to verify its dynamic weighbridges for use for sale of goods by weight and other legal purposes. Self-verification means that Axtec dynamic weighbridges may be approved for trade use by Axtec’s own, authorised staff, without the need to bring in Trading Standards Officers to witness the test, saving costs and avoiding delays for customers. To obtain the approval from the Secretary of State for Business & Trade, Axtec passed a thorough audit of its equipment and processes, already certified under its ISO9001:2015 quality system. Customer value “We have always been proud to offer a complete turnkey service,” said managing director, Keith Gresham. “ This new accreditation means we can enhance that offering still further, improving service and value for our customers. It is also an acknowledgement of the high-quality products we develop, and the rigorous aftersales commitment which keeps our equipment in prime operating condition, optimising its accuracy and reliability.”

CV production keeps growing UK commercial vehicle (CV) production grew again in November, new figures from SMMT show. Factories produced 13,253 vans, buses, trucks, coaches and taxis, up 16.8% on the year before, in the best November performance since 2007 and representing the ninth month of growth in 2023. The November total was 51.1% up on 2019’s pre-pandemic level with output responding to demand from export markets, up 18.3% to 9,451 units with 71.3% of output shipped abroad. The EU again retained its status as the most important overseas market for UK CV exports, taking 96.3% of all vehicles leaving Britain. Orders

Six of the best for epyx Fleet transactions through epyx’s 1link service network service, maintenance and repair (SMR) platform rose by 6% during 2023, according to the company. The 1link service network is used by fleets totalling more than four million cars, vans and trucks to manage their SMR processes, working with over 8,500 franchise dealers, independent garages and fast fits. Tim Meadows, chief commercial officer at epyx, said that 2023’s figures followed on from a successful 2022, when record annual growth had been recorded. “There have been a number of trends powering growth in transactions through the platform, some affecting the wider market and some specific to epyx. Fleets continue to operate vans for much longer than prior to

for UK buyers, meanwhile, also rose, by 13.4% to 3,802 units. As a result, British CV production year-to-date is up 15.5% to 111,863 units, the best for the JanuaryNovember period since 2010, in part due to new production facilities coming on stream and the ability of manufacturers to put supply chain challenges behind them. “UK CV production is on track to record its best year in more than a decade, testament to the competitiveness of automotive manufacturing in this country. Fresh investment to make the latest, zero emission vans here has helped boost volumes of vehicles that are increasingly in demand from fleet operators across Europe,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes.

the pandemic, meaning they simply require more SMR actions. While there are some indications that this situation is in the process of stabilising as new vehicle supply gradually improves, the prospect of returning to the shorter replacement cycles seen previously seems remote, at least for the foreseeable future. “As far as epyx is concerned, we have experienced some important developments, including use of 1link service network from a number of customers in new sectors, notably warranty companies, who are using the platform to deliver repairs in order to take greater control over the claims process. We have also seen dealers start to use the platform to repair cars sold on a distance basis that have developed faults after delivery.”

Cream of the crop

LCV values continued to realign as 2023 drew to a close averaging £8,037 in December, the lowest monthly figure recorded since the UK was in lockdown in 2020, according to resellers BCA. white vans reported stolen in 2023. The pattern extends to black, silver, and grey vans, which are likely targeted due to their common appearance which blends in easily with traffic.

Training studio opens its doors Garage equipment supplier, Straightset, is ready to welcome prospects, customers, distributors and internal staff to its newly completed training studio at its headquarters in Worksop.

At the venue visitors can get hands-on experience with equipment as well as interactive, theory-based learning and computer system showcasing. Customers and engineers will also have the opportunity to meet with the newly appointed wheel alignment specialist, Nick Lauff. An expert on everything to do with wheel alignment Nick will be available to help with demonstrations, sales enquiries, service-related questions and information, including liaising directly with the Beissbarth team in Munich. Andrew Bates, sales director, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of our training studio, which will demonstrate and provide expert training to all.”

AI is complete tool for invoice processing A new artificial intelligence (AI) tool soon to be introduced by FleetCheck is enabling fleet managers to scan invoices into its software in a matter of seconds. Peter Golding, managing director at the fleet software specialist, said that the advance, which is currently undergoing customer testing, would mean thousands of hours saved every year across the company’s user base. “When we survey our users, one of the things they find really time-consuming is manually keying all of the information on an invoice into the system. The new tool means it's as fast as scanning the invoice, turning a job that would normally take an average of five minutes into one that can be completed in under 10 seconds. December decline

New data obtained through a Freedom of Information request by Ed-Lock has unveiled vehicle theft trends in the UK, and revealed that cream vans, for the second year running, are least likely to be stolen. Unsurprisingly pink vans remain another uncommon target, with just one reported stolen in the UK in 2023. Maroon, beige, and purple cars are also relatively safe, with few reported missing last year. On the other hand, white vans are most likely to disappear from roads, with a total of 8,305

recognised from the image and populated into our system. They can then be passed directly to your company's accounting software in the appropriate format. We already have several fleets trialling the tool and the feedback we have received from them is extremely positive. It's a really good use of AI and an example of what it can be used to achieve for fleet managers.”

A number of factors contributed to the decline in average values in 2023, which peaked at £10,325 in April of last year. Alongside the well-publicised economic issues of high inflation and rising interest rates affecting consumer confidence, the market was affected by the changing mix of stock and rising numbers of lower grade vehicles washing out from extended contracts during the pandemic. The recovery of the new van market – up by 22% year-on-year in 2023 – offered more choice to van buyers and took further pressure off the used sector. Any vehicles requiring significant work to get into retail condition needed to be very realistically valued to attract the buyers’ attention. Demand for the very best condition light commercial vehicles continued to significantly outstrip interest in the more poorly presented vehicles. However, the company said, it was noticeable that a number of customers actively took advantage of significantly lower prices in December to refresh their forecourts and many have been realigning their existing stock frequently. Stuart Pearson, BCA COO UK commented: “As last year drew to a close we continued to see the effects of a two-tier market, where well presented, higher grade vehicles attract a lot of interest, while older, higher mileage volume models need to be competitively valued, particularly if they require repair and refurbishment. “The LCV wholesale market has got off to a steady start in 2024, with interest continuing to be highly sensitive to price and condition. These dynamics are not unusual for this time of year and should not be a cause for concern, as there is every expectation that conditions will improve and that 2024 is likely to see a return to more seasonal trends in the wholesale LCV market.”

NEWS New LCVs in demand Demand for new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) grew by 21.0% to reach 341,455 units in 2023, according to the latest figures published by the SMMT. More businesses invested in fleet renewal every month compared with the year before – with a record number of zero emission vans joining Britain’s roads. An additional 59,316 LCVs of all types and sizes joined UK’s highways compared to 2022, following an extra £2bn spend by companies that carry out essential roles in the economy. December was particularly strong, with demand up 36.1% – the best total for the month since 2015. As a result of rising vehicle investment across the year, 2023 saw the highest demand for new vans since the sector’s postpandemic bounceback in 2021, with the market just -6.6% below 2019 levels. Payload efficiencies Popular demand for the largest vans continued, rising 9.4% to 228,442 registrations – with these models representing 66.9% of all new vans as operators opted for payload efficiencies. The largest growth in volume was for medium-sized vans, surging by 78.4% to 57,992 units, with such vehicles still able to carry heavy loads while at the same time delivering the smaller vehicle size requirements of urban operators. Rising demand Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “Rising demand for new vans in every month of 2023 – along with record uptake of battery electric vans – is positive news for the UK, given the vital role of these vehicles in keeping businesses and the economy moving. Demand for new vans is also essential for decarbonisation and, as the UK’s ambitious mandate for electric van sales comes into effect, every lever must be pulled to make the switch accessible for fleets in every region.”

GUIDE LINES

Whether it’s a brand-new workshop or you’re simply going for a replacement, choosing the right wheel aligner for your business can be a complex task. Here Tom Coad, AES UK, provides some guidance to help you arrive at the right choice. Analogue vs digital The two main commercial alignment systems are:

M

isaligned wheels on commercial vehicles can lead to issues including premature tyre wear, increased fuel consumption, inconsistent handling, and even increased driver fatigue. Choosing from the extensive range of systems available can be a daunting task. Hopefully, what follows will equip you with the knowledge and insights needed to select the system that perfectly aligns with your needs.

Vehicle types What types of commercial vehicles are included in your fleet or put through your workshop? Tractor units, trailers, cranes, twin-steer vehicles, light commercial or a combination? Each category has different alignment specifications and requires compatible systems and possible add-ons.

16 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

Define your workshop needs and its wheel alignment requirements, including types of vehicles and axle configurations. Consider future possibilities for different types of vehicles. What is your typical workload? Do you focus repair and maintenance, tyres or accident repair? High-volume operations demand faster systems, while specialised alignments such as post collision repair might need more advanced features. What is your budget? Commercial vehicle alignment systems range from basic setups to feature-packed all-encompassing. Define your budget early to avoid sticker shock later. What is my staffing situation? Are your technicians experienced with alignment systems, or do you prioritise user-friendly options? Balancing technical requirements with operator skill is crucial.

Analogue based systems: these classic setups use analogue measuring devices (usually lasers) mounted on the wheels. They offer a cost-effective entry point but require more manual input and can have limitations in terms of accuracy and adjustable parameters. Digital systems: digital systems utilise camera technology to capture wheel angles automatically. They often have superior accuracy, faster measurements, and a broader range of adjustable parameters, but come at a steeper price and are frequently combined with a laptop, PC or tablet in order for the technician to work from live readings. Choosing between analogue and digital depends on your budget, technician skills, and desired level of precision. While analogue systems might suffice for basic alignments, digital systems offer significant advantages in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and future-proofing your operations.

box-middle and out-of-square (thrust/skew) angle. ■ More advanced requirements include, caster, KPI, max-turn angles and more.

Remember, the cheapest option isn't always the best. Consider the total cost of ownership, including purchase price, installation, calibration, maintenance, and return on investment. A more expensive system with greater features could save you money in the long run through increased efficiency and reduced tyre wear.

Calibration and service interval: how often does the system need calibration? Frequent calibrations increase downtime and costs. What happens when something breaks can it quickly be repaired or does it have to be shipped away? And does the provider offer a loan system? Reporting and diagnostics: does the system generate detailed reports for recordkeeping and preventive maintenance? Advanced diagnostics can pinpoint potential issues early. Mobility and portability: can the system be moved easily within your workshop or even used on-site with customers? Flexibility can be a valuable asset. Software updates and support: does the manufacturer offer regular software updates and reliable technical support?

Keeping your system current guarantees accuracy and efficiency.

It’s time to extinguish that flame and move to induction heating says Greg Ball, sales director, GYS. Here he explains why it’s the go-to method to free seized parts.

O

xyacetylene gas has been used in commercial workshops for as long as we can remember, however with the rising price of gas cylinders and increasing high risk procedures it is time for a new kid on the block. Induction heating is just that, with advancements in technology in the last few years having transformed its functionality to now offer much more than some of the small handheld coil products that have been around for a few years. Induction heaters offer many advantages over flame. They are precise; only the area near the inductor is heated. Instantaneous; the heat is diffused from the metal’s core in only a few seconds. Capability has also expanded as more powerful models have become available, with the likes of a small handheld tool having an output of 500W to 1Kw. Products now can deliver up to more than 20kw with the most popular models now being around 3.5-4kw. Induction is also extremely safe as there is no flame allowing users to work near flammable areas without causing damage.

18 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

Technology in induction heating has developed greatly over the last few years and accordingly a wide range of induction heaters are now targeted at the automotive maintenance sector. Why are an increasing number of commercial workshops replacing gas flame torches with induction heating? Here’s why: induction heating is exceptionally easy and safe to use without masses of training. The precise accuracy provided means that the metal elements, be it metal housing or a tie rod, can be heated to very high temperatures in seconds without heating the surrounding area, helping you repair seized drag link ball joints or steering suspension safely and quickly. Building insurance premiums can also be reduced something that may even negate the initial purchase price of the equipment making induction heating a very costeffective process on top of the previously mentioned gas and cylinder rental which have much higher running costs than an induction heater.

018_CVW_FEB24_Layout 1 24/01/2024 15:05 Page 19

The heat is on How does induction heating work? Electromagnets heat the inside of the metal/object itself using a high-frequency AC, causing the object to heat up without using an external source like oxyacetylene. This is much safer and way more versatile than using oxyacetylene gas. For decades, getting metal to expand has been done using a flame torch, which is extremely dangerous and imprecise. Not anymore. Heat induction is the revolutionary method of heating metal, by using electromagnetic fields. We have been struck by the rate of take up of induction in automotive garages and workshops. More and more commercial vehicle workshops are making the change to safe and powerful induction heating, the benefits of precision and reduction in costs are fast becoming the reason to make the change for a better commercial workshop. The GYS Powerduction range includes machines that cater for all applications, with steel and aluminium heating capabilities.

The 110, 160 and 220 models are suitable for the workshop environment with their combination of power and manoeuvrability and can tackle all jobs in a quick and unobtrusive fashion.

POSITIVE IMPACT Y

orkshire-based Mercedes Truck dealer, Northside Truck & Van, recently sat down with three of its apprentice technicians to explore their experiences using various tools in the workshop. These insightful discussions shed light on the pivotal role tools play in enhancing productivity, reliability, and overall efficiency in their daily tasks.

The apprentices shared their individual stories, providing a profound insight into how the adoption of Milwaukee tools has significantly shaped and optimised their work routines, providing an in-depth view of the tools' impact on their roles within the company. One apprentice recounted: “I started out during school, working in my uncle's garage on light vehicles but found I don’t like being bent over an engine bay so moved over to HGVs.” This transition led him to discover Milwaukee tools’ suitability for heavy-duty tasks tasks, finding their ergonomic design aligning perfectly with his new found requirements. This also built up a layer of familiarity and trust in the brand before beginning his apprenticeship with Northside, easing the transition to his new role.

Easy does it The consensus among the apprentices was that the Milwaukee battery-operated tools play an integral role, particularly the battery guns and electric ratchet, acquired through the employee scheme at Northside Truck & Van. “Battery guns are the tools I use the most along with my electric ratchet, which I got through Northside,” shared one apprentice. hand so you know you won’t snap anything. They ease through the bigger jobs, you know that you can put the battery on and buzz anything off. A lot of the tools, including the drill driver, come with the anti-kickback function so if the tool jolts it will shut it down to stop you breaking your wrist and avoid any danger of injury.” Expressing satisfaction with their ability to purchase new tools through the employee scheme at Northside Truck & Van, one apprentice stated: “Knowing that we can get our own tools through Northside definitely makes us feel more comfortable when using them and we feel a lot more confident. When you don’t need to worry about damaging the equipment or use lower quality tools, you are then free to be more productive.”

Career investment Acknowledging the initial investment, the apprentices unanimously agreed that Milwaukee tools’ quality, warranty, and affordability through the Northside Truck & Van's wage scheme make them a more than worthwhile purchase. Going forward, Northside Truck & Van will continue to seek and value their apprentices' feedback, providing them with the best tools and resources to excel in their workshop careers.

When Toyota GB wanted to give one of its workshops a makeover, it turned to garage equipment specialist, Straightset, to conjure up some magic and deliver a modern, functional workspace. CVW reports.

Before

GR AND DESIGNS S

ometime last year, Toyota GB approached Straightset with an exciting if demanding challenge. It needed to take an old but high-performing dealership in Scotland and completely overhaul its equipment and workshop space to create a service fit for the future. Helensburgh sits on the Firth of Clyde, near Dumbarton, and its Toyota garage has faithfully served the community for some 45 years. However, it was looking dated, with poor use of space, uneven floors and tired staff facilities. The time had come for a major makeover. The garage equipment specialist accepted the challenge to bring the site, which comprised only one MOT bay and four service bays, completely up to date and ready for an increase in work. It also had to maximise the site’s capacity and bring it in line with Toyota's new workshop standards.

proposed design alterations, including eliminating an outdated team room and implementing a new inner wall, would transform the workshop's aesthetics. “On meeting the owners and management of the dealership, it became very apparent that they were ready to embrace change and to gain the improvement in capacity that the garage needed. However, it would not be an easy or quick transformation; it entailed the workshop having to close for four months while the floors were replaced to allow two different floor levels to be merged into one. This was then topped with a fill-pour resin screed and a high build resin floor finish,” explained Bates.

Recommendations Straightset recommended specialist Conren Resin Flooring for the work, which included layout markings for equipment placement that ensured enhanced safety and full compliance with Toyota GB’s new standards. Straightset facilitated the complete integration of all essential workshop upgrades, which included seven new ramps, a connected MOT setup, and a specialized 4.5t 2-poster ramp, which is designed for use with heavy electric vehicles. The workshop was completed with a drive-through wheel alignment checker, that promised quick alignment checks for every incoming vehicle, potentially boosting alignment service sales.

Positive engagement Impressed by positive referrals from other dealerships, the Helensburgh Toyota team met with Andrew Bates, Straightset's sales director, who spearheaded the project from the start. After a site visit in early 2023 to scope out the work, the comprehensive planning phase could begin. Given the workshop's condition, Straightset’s team’s visionary approach was instrumental in developing the makeover strategy. The

Additionally, the company relocated the compressor and oil tanks to make better use of space, and in the process created a clean and efficient working environment. The initial plans and proposal remained almost unchanged by the time of completion and incorporated a costeffective blend of relocating and refitting existing and introducing new equipment. It involved tearing out a tired staff kitchen and replacing with a new facility, putting oil tanks and air compressor storage outside to maximise workshop space and reduce internal noise and reconfiguring the MOT bay to include wheel alignment capability, which in turn, with some additional building works, improved access to the workshop that was previously compromised by bad positioning.

“..when it all began, we could not imagine the finished article...” New Straightset workstation cabinetry, upgraded vehicle lifts, pumped oil, compressed air, water, and the inclusion of a Drive Thru Wheel alignment system in the doorway has transformed the site from tired and out of date to a sophisticated workshop to be proud of. The new workshop officially opened on 13 December 2023 and aftersales manager, Tim Roome at Helensburgh Toyota, said: “I would highly recommend Straightset, and trust in their vision. When it all began, we could not imagine the finished article, and it is through them we

have realised this workshop.” The new space not only enhances customer retention but it is a great working environment for the company’s staff. A modern space to work in helps encourage new technicians to join the company, while retaining skilled staff – securing the future of Helensburgh Toyota. In short, Helensburgh Toyota's collaboration with Straightset resulted in a revitalized, cutting-edge workshop aligned with modern industry standards. A workshop to be proud of, in fact.

Support the electrical system during diagnostic processes or prolonged service operations, says Ecobat Battery, and you won’t lose vital data.

A

s workshops and fleet operators are well aware, diagnostic procedures are now a fundamental part of commercial vehicle servicing, and during a repair, fault finding is a regular requirement in order for many issues to be resolved. Alongside this growth in diagnostic activity has come a considerable increase in the time each vehicle can be undergoing diagnostic processes, some of which include software updates that can take several hours and are therefore often scheduled to run overnight. However, irrespective of the length of time the procedure takes, the correct voltage in the electrical system is vital to perform these functions successfully. Therefore, it is advisable to actively support the battery, and in turn the vehicle’s electrical system, not only during battery replacement, but also when running diagnostic processes and prolonged service or repair activities. As mentioned, these procedures are linked, as to prevent causing unnecessary problems and to be carried out effectively, they all require a stable source of power, at the correct voltage, to be constantly supplied to the vehicle’s electrical system. Although, because of the well-known risk of losing stored memory data, this may seem obvious when replacing the battery, it’s not quite so universally understood when it comes to undertaking diagnostic processes, for example.

Battery discharge However, maintaining the correct voltage during extensive periods of troubleshooting is very important, as it helps technicians to correctly identify the underlying fault. This is because during diagnostic procedures, which nowadays are commonplace, as well as most service and repair processes, the engine is switched off, but power is still drawn from the battery. When carrying out any prolonged operation, which due to the complex electronic systems present in the modern vehicle, is not unusual, the vehicle’s control

units and other electrical equipment can discharge the battery to such an extent that the on-board system voltage falls below the permissible voltage limit of the control units and a corresponding entry is made in the fault memory, and important vehicle operation data can be lost.

Like a smartphone In truth, this reality this should come as no surprise because, as these days virtually everyone has a smart phone, all will be familiar with the fact that these will often prevent scheduled software updates from occurring if the device isn’t connected to a separate power supply, even if the battery is at more than 50%! So, a similar principle should be applied when carrying out diagnostic processes or any prolonged service action. The power source for this supply feed however, needs to be constant and reliable, so unless it is equipped with a ‘supply only’ function, the use of a standard heavy duty smart charger isn’t recommended because, although they are very effective at charging and maintaining a battery ready for use starting the vehicle, they generally do that by constantly adjusting the charge rate, which is not what is needed when the supply must be at a consistent level. This is where a more advanced product, such as the CTEK MXTS 40, comes to the fore, as it is a highly efficient power supply and charger, designed around the needs of the modern workshop. It has a selectable, dual voltage power supply, each with incremental output voltage settings in steps of 0.4V (12V setting) or 0.8V (24V setting). Its steady, accurate voltage settings mean complex diagnostic, repair and reprogramming procedures can be carried out quickly and safely without fear of damage to sensitive vehicle electronics. The MXTS 40 also has automatic parallel load compensation, which makes sure that the power supply voltage and amperage are always constant and correct, even if the battery has an additional load placed on it.

The CTEK MTXS 40 is therefore a suitable power supply for diagnostic or software flashing work, procedures that require the vehicle’s ignition to be switched on for long periods of time because, using its ‘supply’ mode, maintains a constant battery voltage throughout the period of repair or reprogramming. In summary, as has been discussed, using equipment dedicated to battery support when the vehicle is undergoing diagnostic procedures, is now a necessity. In addition, a battery performs best when it’s in peak condition, so by reducing the possibility of battery failure in the workshop, or even worse when the vehicle is back out on the road, workshops can illustrate best practice, and save time and money by reducing the likelihood of unnecessary down time.

FRIENDS REUNITED It’s said that business is all about relationships and MAHA UK’s work with DAF specialist, Chassis Cab, proves the point as the two join forces to expand workshop capacity with third collaboration. CVW reports.

M

AHA UK and Chassis Cab have reignited their partnership to collaborate on a third workshop installation. Recognising that its existing workshop space was at maximum capacity, combined with the retirement of a popular member of staff that ran the bodyshop, the DAF specialist made the decision to convert the space into a two-bay service lane and major unit repair workshop. It is an investment that has already paidoff, according to Chassis Cab service director, Andy Ling, who holds a longstanding relationship with the workshop equipment supplier.

30 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

The pair first combined when MAHA UK was awarded the contract to provide Chassis Cab, a family-run business and DAF truck franchise holder, an ATF lane at its Great Blakenham (Ipswich) site. In 2020, the two came together once more to install another lane at its Fenstanton facility. Thanks to MAHA UK’s professional approach and premium equipment Chassis Cab didn’t have to think twice about employing the same services once more. “The additional space has given us so much more! We sell new and used trucks, DAF genuine parts, truck and trailer components, as well as offer repair and

maintenance services. We get through so many routine inspections and the related maintenance work. The technicians were on-top of each other and doubling up on jobs, so creating more space was the logical step in our journey,” explained Ling. “As a result, we’ve now doubled the capacity of the workshop site – it’s made our business more efficient, pleased our customers, and given our staff more freedom.” As well as maintenance and servicing, Chassis Cab also conducts MOT inspections. The lane caters for all its needs, with MAHA UK’s MBT 7250 Eurosystem roller brake tester, LMS 20.0 axle play detector and MLT 3000 headlight tester installed and operational. An additional tachograph module is also set to be added imminently. MAHA UK managing director, Neil Ebbs, added: “Having worked with Chassis Cab and Andy for a number of years – Bury St Edmunds is the third site we’ve collaborated on – it’s a partnership that has proved beneficial to all parties.” Neil also thanked Gavin Donnelly’s contribution of an immaculate paintjob, and Premier Pits, once again, providing outstanding support on installation. He added: “Of course, our service team have come in as well and gone above and beyond to ensure the project has gone to plan, on time and on target. A job well done by everyone.”

TYRES & WHEELS

TREAD CAREFULLY Do you know your Ackerman from your tandem scrub? They’re all part of understanding the potential causes of tyre wear. Here Hankook Tyre UK outlines how inflation pressure and wheel alignment can affect all types of vehicles.

O

ne of the most important aspects of tyre maintenance is correct tyre inflation, that is necessary to carry the load and avoid damage. Driving with improper inflation (particularly grossly under inflated or over inflated) is dangerous and can cause critical damage or sudden failure and premature removal from service. Hankook therefore suggests that inflation values should be checked at least once a week, and always before a long-distance drive, Indeed, in the space of one month, a tyre can lose up to 10 pounds of air pressure. It is also advisable to take into account the axle loadings for the loads imposed, when setting inflation pressures, compensation for heavier loads can be made by increasing inflation pressures – though make sure

not to exceed the maximum inflation rates for the tyre, or maximum axle load. Under inflation is the worst enemy for tyres, it causes increased tread wear on the tyre shoulders, reduces the tread contact area on the road surface and also generates excessive heat affecting the tyres durability. Soft tyres also make your vehicle work harder, meaning that fuel efficiency is reduced due to increased rolling resistance. Over inflation, on the other hand, is also detrimental. Too much air pressure causes the centre of the tread to bear the majority of the vehicles weight, leading to more rapid wear to the tyre tread centre which will shorten the life span of the tyre. It also makes the tyre more prone to damage from road hazards due to the tyre not being able to dampen the effects of a shock.

Wheel alignment There is actually more to alignment that most people understand. Steering axle alignment alone is not sufficient, as the vehicle and all of its tyres need to be travelling in the same direction and it is essential that that all axles are in correct alignment also. There are various different components needed to achieve total wheel alignment:

Camber ■ camber is the inward or outward tilt of the steering axle tyres when viewed from the front. ■ positive camber is the top of the tyre tilted out; negative camber is the top of the tyre tilted in. The angle that a centre line of the wheel is inclined from the vertical centre line perpendicular to a flat road, is called camber angle. If the top of the top of the tyre is tilted out and the wheel leans out from the perpendicular then it is positive camber. If

FEBRUARY 2024 CVW 33

TYRES & WHEELS

the top of the tyre is tilted in and the wheel leans in from the perpendicular then it is negative camber. Camber becomes more negative as the load increases. Camber is meant to compensate for the downward forces of added loads; correct camber settings help the tyre to maintain a firm and even tread contact with the road while the vehicle is travelling under loaded conditions; often, one side tyre tread wear can occur on the outside or inside edge of the tyre due to incorrect camber setting.

Toe ■ toe is the inward or outward pointing of the wheels when viewed from the top of the vehicle ■ the goal is to have zero toe when the vehicle is loaded to its normal operating condition Toe-in refers to the inclination of the wheels of a vehicle so that the pair of front wheels are set inwards facing. The purpose of toe-in is to counteract some of the forces which pull the wheels outwards as they roll along the road under engine power. Correct toe-in will ensure the direction of travel is correct as possible for forward direction of travel, insufficient toein settings will result in steering instability. If toe-in or toe-out is insufficient or excessive, tyre wear will certainly be affected and appear as feathering at the edges of the tread.

Caster ■ caster is the forward or rearward tilt of the king pin of the steering axle when viewed from the side ■ caster is generally not considered to have a great effect on the tyre wear Caster is the condition where the king pin is inclined with the top of the pin angled rearward, similar to the front forks of a bicycle. Caster angle is meant to compensate for the resistance which the tyre(s) encounters as a result of drag forces against the road. Caster angle should be the same for both wheels on a given axle, or the result will be vibration and abnormal tyre wear. Too much caster will more than compensate for the amount of drag, but it will also create additional difficulty in steering. Too little caster makes steering become lighter, but also unstable. The caster angle should be checked as it can be distorted by impacts on the tyre or by rough driving conditions.

“...correct camber settings help the tyre maintain a firm and even tread contact...” Ackerman ■ the Ackermann principle shows that in any turn the inside tyre needs a sharper turn angle than the outside tyre ■ The difference in turn angles between the tyres is determined by the actual turn angle and the vehicle wheelbase. Improper Ackermann causes side force, excessive scuffing and fast or irregular wear.

Thrust angle ■ thrust angle is the difference between the line perpendicular to the axle and vehicle center line ■ each drive axle has its own thrust angle The target is to have zero thrust angle.

Tandem scrub ■ tandem scrub is the difference in the thrust angles of the drive axles ■ the target is zero Tandem scrub errors cause constant side force on the steer tyres, which leads to irregular wear. Let’s face it, we all know that tyres have a shelf life but their performance can be enhanced and influenced by setting and maintaining the right tyre pressures from the get-go and making sure that the pressures are in-line with the vehicle loading.

MILES BETTER As featured briefly in last month’s issue of CVW, Bridgestone has unveiled a new range of tyres that promise good things for fleet managers.

B

ridgestone believes that its latest Ecopia Enliten tyre line-up marks a major step forward in sustainable fleet management. The range comprises an advanced long-haul tyre line-up designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce operational costs for fleets. Waqqas Ahmad, commercial sales director at Bridgestone EMIA, stressed that the Ecopia Enliten range is engineered to address the rising operational costs due to increased fuel prices. “We’re launching what we believe is the new best choice in the premium segment for long-haulage,” he said.

The line-up not only focuses on cost reduction but also supports fleet sustainability efforts. According to Ahmad, an average European long-haul fleet using these tyres could reduce CO2 emissions by 192 tonnes per year. Bridgestone points out that more than half Europe’s freight is carried on roads, and nearly 40% of that has to cross borders. The long-haul transport industry not only has to cope with this high demand but must also adapt to economic pressures for great cost efficiency coupled with stricter emissions regulations. The company says that this range is its first truck tyre to be created using its Enliten combination of technologies. These include low energy pattern designs and highperformance compounds focused on fuel efficiency. Another innovation is that the low profile Ecopia Steer Enliten tyres incorporate a new spiral belt construction that increases cornering power and optimises pressure distribution to improve wear life.

Longer lasting According to Bridgestone, this gives this range of tyres an improved performance compared to previous models. The range has an EU label A-grade in rolling resistance, while internal tests show that it has a 12% rolling resistance reduction in the drive axle and an 8% reduction in the steer axle compared to its previous generation. These tyres also last longer, the company says, with 40% higher mileage in the steer axle – without compromising on regular wear – and up to 6% higher mileage in the drive axle.

36 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

036_CVW_FEB24_Layout 1 24/01/2024 11:09 Page 37

The Ecopia Enliten range is suitable for all-season long haulage, with an EU label Bgrade in wet grip and the 3PMSF marking. It is also eminently sustainable, as the tyre is engineered with a robust casing for greater retreadability. All the tyres in the range are equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID), ready for integration with tyre-mounted sensors, and suitable for electric vehicles. The tyres are initially available in size 315/70 R22.5, with four additional sizes to be added throughout 2024 and one further size in 2025. In addition to the tyre technology, Bridgestone is offering the Ecopia Steer Enliten and Ecopia Drive Enliten tyres as part of Bridgestone Fleetcare, a suite of solutions that combines products, data, and services to enhance fleet operations. The Ecopia Trailer Enliten will be available from late 2024 to complete the range, with new sizes being added throughout 2024 and 2025.

In a stark warning asset management provider, i247 Group, claims that too many vans are on the roads with dangerously low tyre treads. CVW investigates.

i

247 Group, an outsourced driver support and asset management provider, reports that it is seeing a rise in very low tyre treads on vans. The Poole-based company says the increase in LCVs with less than two millimetres of tyre tread depth has risen 10% over the last five years, from 30% in 2019 to 40% in 2023. In addition, there has also been a rising number of tyre defects leading to MOT failures on Class 5 vehicles – such as minibuses with 13 or more seats as well as ambulances. “Driving with worn tyres is dangerous, not just for the driver but for other road users too. We’re really concerned about the rise we're seeing in fleets operating with low levels of tyre tread with some at illegal levels,” said David Legg, director of tyres, i247 Group. “We know van fleets are under pressure right now but we're urging fleets to give their drivers time to carry out critical tyre checks regularly. This is especially important during periods when delivery volumes are high.” Fleet operators have a ‘duty of care’ responsibility for ensuring vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and drivers are also legally responsible for the condition of the vehicle they drive. Drivers can be fined up to £300 and receive three penalty points or be taken to court if the offence is more serious. Driving with heavily worn tyres affects a vehicle’s ability to brake efficiently and maintain sufficient surface grip during wet or winter conditions. Low tread tyres are also more likely to

38 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

suffer punctures and lose air pressure which impacts fuel economy and steering. i247 Group attributes the rise in worn tyres to the heightened pressure on van fleets. Post pandemic, demand for deliveries remains high which means fleets are often double shifting – using one van for two driver shifts. The Grocer, the highly respected trade magazine, recently also reported an ongoing shortage of commercial vehicle drivers. Office for National Statistics figures showed there were 6,000 fewer delivery and courier drivers in the UK from April 2022 to March 2023, versus the same period the year before. The data also showed that more than half (55%) of HGV drivers in the UK were aged between 50 and 64. The average age was 53, meaning many truckers and van drivers will be heading towards retirement in the next decade. These factors combined, Legg believes, are putting scheduling pressures on drivers who simply do not have the time to carry out critical maintenance checks. He advises fleets to treat vehicle checks as critically as any other job tool pre-use. Ensuring these maintenance checks are conducted regularly can be facilitated by various tools and apps available on the market, promoting compliance and driver safety.

According to Brit European, it looks for more than tyres when it chooses its supplier of rubber. CVW reports. It's a deal: (l to r) Garry Lane, Wayne Bell (Prometeon), Andy Evans, Paul Birch (Brit European)

ROLLING CONTRACT B

rit European, claimed to be the UK’s largest mover of plant and construction equipment, has renewed its contract with Prometeon Tyre Group. The renewal signifies the continuation of a long-standing partnership between the two firms, with a 12-month rolling pay-asyou-go contract. The agreement incorporates Prometeon's central billing and tyre management tool, 'PRO Management'. The contract encompasses the entirety of Brit European's fleet, which includes 162 tractor units and rigids, 201 trailers, as well as a variety of cars and vans. Prometeon is set to supply Brit European with its advanced Serie02 tyre products, tailored to meet the needs of its heavy haulage vehicles. Andy Evans, optimisation manager at Brit European, said that the company has stuck with Prometeon because the tyre supplier has grown with it and has made itself a part of the team. “Its exemplary tyre management skills, outstanding customer support, and comprehensive dealer network have helped to secure our continued growth,” he explained.

40 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

“The premium Pirelli branded truck tyres, which are engineered, produced and sold by Prometeon, have been proven over the years to suit our fleet's needs – a tyre failure is virtually unheard of." Prometeon, for its part, is delighted to have been so firmly endorsed by such a high profile client. Wayne Bell, Prometeon's national fleet manager, commented: "We are proud to be a valued partner of Brit European, and alongside our dedicated tyre network, we will continue to deliver the best tyre products and proactive tyre management service supporting Brit European's operational demands.” The Brit European heavy haulage fleet transports plant and construction machinery for household names such as JCB and Mercedes Trucks and Vans over the length

and breadth of the UK motorway network, with specialist port staff at Immingham, Lincolnshire, and Purfleet, Essex. This is a high mileage fleet that travels well over one million kilometres a year transporting an average of 120 JCB machines a day. According to Evans, the affinity between the two companies goes beyond supplying tyres and even extends to supporting Brit European’s drive to achieve net zero. This is a very serious proposition, as shown by its 'Net Zero' head office in Middlewich, Cheshire. Even though it is just off junction 18 of the M6, the Vita Nova centre operates entirely off-grid. It utilizes 80 solar panels that generate 35kW of electricity, supplemented by the latest wind towers. The building is modular, constructed from a repurposed steel frame, and has been awarded an 'A' energy efficiency rating. Additionally, the centre has achieved an 85% reduction in water usage on site. So Prometeon’s own practices came under scrutiny, according to Evans, to make sure that the company matched its own standards of sustainability.

040_CVW_FEB24 _Layout 1 24/01/2024 10:59 Page 41

“Significantly reducing waste both on our site and with our fleet operations is an important goal for our business,” he said. “And we know Prometeon has a high level of environmental awareness and commitment to sustainability across all its operations both in the UK and worldwide.” Prometeon’s tyre recycling and retread programmes, for instance, was evidence that it was the perfect fit. Naturally Bell is happy to agree, commenting: “We fully support Brit Europeans visionary thinking of creating a 100% carbon neutral operations centre, and we will continue to work closely with them towards achieving ‘net zero’ by 2050.”

TYRES & WHEELS

A company supplying fleet management software and a tyre manufacturer have joined forces to ease the load for their customers. CVW finds out what they’ve come up with.

PLAN OF ACTION B

ridgestone and Webfleet, after conducting extensive research on their customer base, have developed four innovative tools aimed at helping fleets cut costs and save money. This initiative is in response to the economic challenges that commercial fleets across the UK were facing, particularly in light of the rising cost of business operations. “We want commercial fleets to know that when it comes to the cost of business crisis, we not only hear them, but we are here to support them,” said David Almazán, Bridgestone’s commercial business unit director, Bridgestone North Region. “We are here to support them and provide them with solutions to ease their financial pressures, along with any stress and anxiety associated with their daily operations.” The two companies commissioned a detailed study so they could understand the specific needs and challenges of their customers in the current economic climate. This research was one of the most comprehensive ever undertaken

42 CVW FEBRUARY 2024

by Bridgestone and Webfleet. It involved polling over 200 UK fleet decision makers with the help of research consultancy Perspectus Global. The objective was to view the economic landscape from the unique perspective of these fleet operators and understand how they planned to navigate through it.

Findings

The findings were revealing: 85% of commercial businesses admitted they were tasked with cutting fleet spend. More than a third of HGV operators (36%) believed they would have to contract their operations, and a significant majority (69%) identified fuel as their biggest cost increase.

042_CVW_FEB24_Layout 1 24/01/2024 14:10 Page 43

“We know of the business and economic challenges that they are facing right now and we know how resilient fleet operators are, not least in the wake of the Covid pandemic,” commented Almazán. After recognising the scale of the challenges facing the sector, Bridgestone and Webfleet created four online tools designed to alleviate some of these pressures. These tools included: ■ access to an in-depth Duravis and Ecopia

research study with Coventry University to calculate potential fuel savings. ■ a Webfleet savings calculator that outlines cost reductions in a matter of seconds. ■ A Webfleet solution advisor that offers fleet efficiency improvements based on data-driven insights. ■ downloadable e-books titled “Keeping you on the Road,” providing valuable insights and tips on tyre maintenance and best practices.

“...we know of the business and economic challenges...” Bridgestone is also inviting businesses for a free consultation and fleet audit with one of its specialist commercial consultants to help them realize potential savings in a practical, real-world context. This initiative by Bridgestone and Webfleet, with its focus on customercentric solutions and sustainability, is part of Bridgestone's broader mission to continue providing value to society and customers as a sustainable solutions company towards 2050. The approach also aligned with its E8 Commitment, which includes eight key areas like Energy, Ecology, Efficiency, Extension, Economy, Emotion, Ease, and Empowerment, guiding its business practices in a sustainable and efficient manner.

TRANSMISSIONS

TRANSMISSION REVAMP

I

t’s no secret that tippers and other trucks targeted at the construction industry represent very good business for truck dealers. They probably suffer more minor damage and wear-and-tear than any other truck type and are guaranteed to keep workshops and parts departments busy almost from day one of their service lives. Part of this is the inevitable rough-andtumble of site work, but an often-ignored factor is that the automated manual transmissions (AMTs) which are now the standard offering from all the chassis manufacturers may not be ideally suited to the task at hand. The rigors of off-highway operation with ruts, steep inclines, and loose and slippery surfaces prove quite a challenge for the electronic systems that control the driveline, and this is evidenced by the ‘offroad’ setting available on some tippers that try to modulate the response of the transmission to rapidly changing amounts of variable grip by ‘holding’ gears in situations where the gearbox control would otherwise be ‘hunting’ between ratios. But there is no denying that operations in these conditions place considerable stress on the weakest link in the powertrain: the mechanical clutch and its associated components.

It’s time for construction fleets to consider whole life costs, says Nathan Wilson, account and area sales manager UK & Republic of Ireland for Allison Transmission

Mechanical clutches are wearing components with finite lives: but they are also very vulnerable to premature failure once the wear process starts. The heat and dust generated by an over-stressed clutch do cumulative damage not just to the friction surfaces themselves but also to the clutch actuating mechanism and pressure plate. An in-depth study of the engineering costs of a UK fleet’s industrial and commercial waste-collection vehicles has revealed a spate of expensive clutch failures on five different makes of trucks fitted with

standard automated manual transmissions. Analysis using the fleet's own internal maintenance and repair data revealed a 58% clutch failure rate on one premium make of vehicle equipped with the chassis manufacturer's own AMT from 2020-2022, with the primary cause being thermal overload. Besides the clutch itself, other components requiring replacement after clutch failure often included flywheels and flywheel bolt sets, and clutch actuating forks and bearings. The study found that the typical direct cost of fitting a replacement clutch at a manufacturer’s franchised workshop could be in the region of £3,000. Adding on related incidental costs, which can include vehicle recovery, downtime, and the hire of a specialist replacement vehicle, could see the cost more than double. In the days of manual transmissions, such catastrophic failures were probably less usual. Driver abuse could be an issue, but skilled drivers were also aware of changes in clutch ‘feel’ caused by overheating, and could take appropriate

TRANSMISSIONS

action. This isn’t the case for modern ‘twopedal’ trucks; where impending failure is not so apparent. The clutch works until it doesn’t, and then it needs to be replaced. The fleet’s report also found repeated instances of clutch failures on the same vehicles over periods of five years or more, adding significantly to operational costs. But there was one tranche of vehicles which experienced virtually no transmission failures at all. Although engaged in similar work to the rest of the fleet, these trucks had been equipped with factory-fitted fully-automatic Allison transmissions. The only issue reported with these was the replacement of a small number of electronic sensors. A quick and easy job compared to splitting a truck powertrain to replace a friction clutch. Just like those Allison transmissions widely used in construction machines, Allison’s truck transmissions feature hydraulic torque convertors which absorb the loads imposed when heavily-laden vehicles have to traverse rough terrain. The stress of converting torque into motion is absorbed by the hydraulic fluid rather than turning into heat (and consequential wear and damage) as it does with a friction clutch. So, why aren’t Allison transmissions more widely specified on construction trucks? One reason is that there’s a stereotype that automatic transmissions make trucks less efficient because they ‘absorb power’. As a result, they have a reputation for only being suitable only for refuse or fire trucks.

This is absolutely not the case. The reality is that the torque converter boosts the effort imparted to the driving wheels beyond what would be possible with a friction clutch. Pressure accumulated in the torque-converter as the truck initially pulls away is turned into drive, giving a flywheel effect. With an AMT, excess torque is absorbed by the slipping clutch plate and turns to waste heat and wear. Similarly, the seamless ‘power on’ shifting qualities of an Allison enable smooth and consistent ratio shifts, while an AMT will continuously experience power interruption during every shift

change with a reduction of torque yet an increase of heat, eventually destroying its clutch. Allison transmissions are widely used in demanding performance-sensitive applications from fire appliances to Dakar rally trucks for this very reason. This quality presents the truck buyer with two interesting fuel-saving opportunities without compromising performance. A higher final-drive gearratio can be specified: reducing fuel consumption and noise at highway speeds, or a smaller, lighter and less powerful engine can be chosen: saving fuel, weight and front-end cost. On the subject of weight, Allison’s 3000 Series is the lightest transmission in the market, giving further opportunities to boost payload and productivity. With shift sequences controlled by software, individual transmissions can be fine-tuned for performance or fuel economy, and for operations in flat or hilly terrain. Given the strength of this case, why aren’t more tippers, and other ‘vocational’ trucks, specified with fully automatics in the UK market? Perhaps it’s time for all involved in the vehicle specification process to learn about different options and consider solutions that best suit end-users over the complete life of the vehicle. There is usually a price premium for specifying Allison transmissions over an in-house product, but the brutal truth is that this is likely to be less than the actual cost of a single failed mechanical clutch on an AMT.

INSIDE TRACK BRIGADE ELECTRONICS Brigade Electronics has launched Radar Predict, its latest side blind spot information system (BSIS), a technology specifically designed to protect cyclists from incidents with HGVs. Utilising artificial intelligence (AI), Radar Predict alerts the driver about potential collisions by analysing data such as the speed and direction of the vehicle, and cyclists nearby. The system uses its specially designed algorithm to alert drivers when an impact with a cyclist is likely. Radar Predict supports HGV driver visibility via a single dual-radar unit, which is fitted to the nearside of the vehicle to provide complete side coverage, including the trailer unit. The driver is alerted only if a cyclist enters the detection zone and poses a potential collision risk. The system issues differentiated visual and audible alerts based on the time to collision, providing an initial notification upon detection and escalating to a more urgent warning if it predicts an imminent collision.
