TESTING TIMES

Over the last couple of years, the DVSA has made a number of appearances in these pages, telling us about the introduction and roll out of its digital services for ATFs. At the outset it promised that “by improving our services we’ll make it easier for ATFs to do business with us. Having access to a digital account will mean many transactions will become more accessible and efficient – freeing up time to focus on other priorities. All ATFs will benefit from using the Manage Your Vehicle Testing (MyVT) digital account when the service fully rolls out later this year.”

Later on, the agency added: “Our vision recognises that we need to continue to work in partnerships to deliver our goals. The relationship with ATFs is a good example of such a partnership – and we will need to continue to develop that partnership to ensure we can, together, deliver the best possible service to vehicle operators. That means that we will continue to listen to feedback and work with ATFs in recognising best practice to deliver the service.”

So, you can imagine our surprise to receive news that the ATF Operators Association’s (ATFOA) feedback was not so warm. It is so incensed with the way things were going that it’s decided to relaunch an initiative to right the perceived wrongs. And it hasn’t minced its words, thundering that “despite initial promises, the partnership encountered numerous challenges, including DVSA tester shortages, booking restrictions, and unanticipated costs imposed on ATF operators. Over the years, ATF operators have struggled with financial deficits and inadequate profitability. ATFs were expected to concede value when DVSA imposed additional costs upon them at various intervals without even consulting their partners.”

So, what is ATFOA and its chair Stephen Smith trying to achieve? Chief among its priorities is a feasibility study into permitting ATFs to increase their pit fee charges through a statutory pay review, ensuring fair compensation for ATF operators.

Smith is blunt in his assessment claiming that “ATF operators, stalwarts in the realm of logistics, have weathered the storm of over a decade's worth of inflationary onslaughts. They've valiantly shouldered the burden of extra duties without commensurate reward, all while sacrificing their own revenue streams.” And the time for pay back is now.

These are two very contrasting sides of the same industry coin, and it will be interesting to see what happens. Watch this space!

Desert challenge for BEN

Automotive industry charity Ben is turning up the heat for this year’s Industry Leader Challenge (ILC) which will see a group of senior leaders tackling the Sahara Desert in November.

Up to 10 teams of two will spend five days trekking across the Sahara Desert in Morocco to raise a minimum of £20,000 per team for Ben. Participants will spend up to 10 hours a day trekking across unforgiving terrain, covering up to 27km a day in the punishing heat. Daytime temperatures will be 25-35°C and closer to zero at night with no shade except during meal stops and overnight.

So far, teams from the Retail Motor Industry Federation, the Independent Garage Association and LKQ ECP have signed up. From those organisations, Stuart James, director of RMIF; Rob Collison, chairman of the IGA and Kevin Finn, chair of RMIF and IMI, are confirmed as taking part.

Van sales continue to motor

Demand for new light commercial vehicles rose by 5.4% in April as more businesses invested in the latest models, according to new figures published by the SMMT. Overall, 23,889 new vans, 4x4s and pickups were registered, the highest total for the month since 2021, as fleets invested in vehicles to support local trades, doorstep services and other increasingly vital parts of the logistics sector, says the organisation.

Growth across the market was underpinned by the long-term popularity of the largest LCV models weighing more than 2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes, up 3.3% to 15,714 units –accounting for almost two thirds (65.8%) of registrations. Deliveries of medium-sized vans grew by 6.8% to 4,611 units, while the

Steady demand and improving stock mix saw average LCV values rise by £115 (1.3%) to reach £8,855 in March 2024, according to resellers BCA. Sold volumes rose for the third consecutive month as buyers competed strongly across its daily LCV sales programme.

The strong performance echoed the improving economic landscape, which saw the UK avoid the potential Q1 minirecession that commentators had been warning of since the end of 2023.

Durite, the vehicle safety, lighting and auto electrical parts supplier, has commissioned a new demonstration vehicle designed to bring its range of road safety products closer to fleet operators throughout the UK

“Britain’s new van market continues to grow with the very latest, more fuelefficient models driving down CO2 – a core mission for the sector. Manufacturers are investing billions to bring electric vehicles to market, however, uptake is slowing and urgent action is needed,” commented Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

There was continuing positive news from the new van sector, as the LCV market grew 11.1% to 52,916 units to record the best March performance for three years, with significant demand for larger vans – up 16.1% –and small vans, which saw demand leap by nearly 45%. Inflation bites

Average fleet parts prices have risen by more than a third (35%) in four years, new data released by epyx shows.

Using a basket of common parts including front discs and pads, wiper blades, clutch, pollen filter, headlamp bulbs and spark plugs, the total cost has risen from £713 in 2020 to £963 in 2024.

The biggest increases have been seen for headlamp bulbs (up by over 45%), clutch (up by over 40%), spark plugs and pollen filters (up by over a third). The data is taken from epyx's 1link service network, used by fleets totalling more than four million cars, vans and trucks to manage their service, maintenance and repair processes, working with thousands of franchise dealers, independent garages and fast fits.

Turning a blind eye

Fleet operators are increasingly regarding roadworthiness as a recommendation rather than a legal requirement, says fleet vehicle security and compliance technology provider, HH Driveright.

According to the company the pressures of hiked operational costs and higher insurance premiums are leading to a few fleet operators turning a blind eye to maintenance requirements and deviating away from the schedule declared in their Vehicle Operator's License.

More accolades for Rygor

Rygor Group has been named as one of the UKs Best Workplaces (large companies) for the second year running. The group’s ranking of 72 on the prestigious 2024 UK Best Workplaces list was awarded as a result of overwhelmingly positive feedback from team members.

The Trust Index survey asked employees to respond to 60 core statements, which are asked consistently of all organisations taking part in the initiative. These statements look at a variety of key areas of employee engagement and company culture, including collaboration, justice, communication, teamwork, credibility, engagement, innovation, leadership behaviour and hospitality. Exports rose 57.9% to 23,060 units in the first quarter, up from 57.0% in Q1 2023, thanks to demand for the latest cutting edge and increasingly zero emission British-built CVs. The EU remained the top export destination, with more than nine in 10 vehicles (96.7%) heading for the bloc. Production for the UK market, meanwhile, declined -13.1% to 9,566 units.

Growth in January and February, however, was followed by a -19.2% decline in March output to 7,943 units –the first monthly fall since September 2023. Exports declined by -12.6% to 5,084 units against the same month last year, with 732 fewer units made, while production for the UK fell -28.8% to 2,859 units.

Growth ramps up

Growth is still expected this year, with the latest independent outlook expecting light van production volumes to hit over 135,000 units – a result of electric vehicle output ramping up.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: ”It is good to see UK CV production record its best Q1 performance in some 16 years, the success testament to the determination of manufacturers to deliver for this vital sector, while investing in the latest cutting edge, ultra low and zero emission technology. Global demand continues for British-built commercial vehicles, emphasising the need for favourable market conditions to sustain our production capabilities for increasingly green vehicles.”

New trailers help gas expansion

Independent LPG supplier Rectory Gas Supplies has invested in two new Krone trailers to support the next phase of its expansion.

Based near Stamford Bridge in North Yorkshire, the company provides LPG gas to homes, businesses and the trade, throughout Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and Humberside. The company has recently expanded into Norfolk and needed two trailers to support this new operation.

David Barton, operations manager and co-owner of the business, said: “We needed two trailers for transporting gas bottles and cylinders from our headquarters to the Norwich depot, and to bring back the empties. The Krone trailers are exactly what we were looking for as they are robust and easy to use - and built to a high standard.”

The trailers are flatbed with drop sides. They include fully welded, double-T longitudinal beams and cross members, with a 40mm thick hardwood floor. They feature the Krone awardwinning Multi Lock side rave with load securing positions every 100mm.

The patented Multi Lock side rave forms part of the Krone Multi Safe load securing system, which is designed to help minimise the risk of loads becoming detached and causing injury, damage or loss.

Multi Lock is supplied with up to 126 strapping points on each side of the vehicle, creating more than 3,000 ways of securing the load. The system can be combined with a range of options, such as screwable pallet stops, lashing rings or a chain adaptor.

It’s curtains for Wilmotts

South-west warehousing and distribution specialist Willmotts Transport Ltd has added 60 new Tiger curtainsiders, bringing the company’s fleet to over 250 trailers.

A new transport contract for a corrugated cardboard manufacturer meant that it required the additional trailers within a short space of time, which Tiger facilitated as a long-standing supplier for Willmotts. Whilst half of this batch are standard-height curtainsiders, the others come in at 4.7m, to cater for the end user’s variable cargo sizes.

Group managing director, Andy Stott said, ‘They will look really striking out on the road and provide first-class

representation when delivering for our customers. Our BRCGS certification extends to our own fleet, so it is important for our customers to know that their goods are being carried in clean, new vehicles by a reliable supply chain partner. The ATF Operators Association (ATFOA) is relaunching its initiative aimed at addressing long-standing challenges within the Authorised Testing Facility (ATF) industry and advocating for fair treatment of ATF operators across the country.

Founded in 2013 by Stephen Smith, Chief Executive at Boleyn Recovery & Fleet Services, a family-owned business and ATF in Essex, ATFOA has been at the forefront of representing the interests of over 400 ATF peers nationwide. These facilities, crucial for conducting MOT tests for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), buses coaches, and trailers, have, according to the association, faced persistent obstacles in their operations, stemming from the partnership between private sector ATFs and government agencies.

The inception of ATFOA came against the backdrop of efforts by the Vehicle and Operator Standards Agency (VOSA) to streamline HGV testing, prompted by inefficiencies and extended waiting times

experienced by multiple HGV operators. The subsequent formation of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) aimed to leverage private sector expertise to enhance testing efficiency through the establishment of ATFs.

However, despite initial promises, the partnership encountered numerous challenges, including DVSA tester shortages, booking restrictions, and unanticipated costs imposed on ATF operators. Over the years, ATF operators have struggled with financial deficits and inadequate profitability. ATFs were expected to concede value when DVSA imposed additional costs upon them at various intervals without even consulting their partners.

In response to these challenges, the ATFOA is relaunching to address industry-wide concerns and to advocate for fair treatment of ATF operators. ATFOA aims to reinvigorate the ATF industry by promoting the view of ATF services as essential safety components of the UK's transport network, deserving of reasonable profit margins and investment in facility enhancement.

“Yet, the current financial landscape poses a grave threat, with dwindling incomes and soaring operational costs pushing these

operators perilously close to the brink. In essence, they find themselves not merely supporting but subsidising the very system they sustain, a scenario that could spell economic peril. It's high time for a recalibration of this unequal partnership. The ATFOA is calling for an immediate pay review to ensure fairness and sustainability,” adds Smith.

ATFOA is inviting ATF operators, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to join hands in this endeavour to promote fairness, efficiency, and sustainability within the ATF industry. The ATFOA has written to all ATF operators, inviting them to re-/join ATFOA, and to both the Minister and Shadow Minister for Roads, requesting meetings. At the time of writing, a meeting has been secured with Labour's Bill Esterson MP.

You only need to visit Continental’s HQ in Hannover to understand just how seriously the company takes its environmental responsibility. It even collects rainwater for re-use, charges the electric cars and bikes of its staff from solar panels and ensures that the office environment is both pleasant and sustainable through the use of materials such as wood, stone and natural fibres. This adherence to sustainable principles and commitment to detail is just as evident in the launch of its new range of tyres for the freight industry – the new Conti Eco Gen 5. Three years in the development, thousands of hours on the test bed and on the open road and an approach informed by research carried out by the Boston Consulting Group, and you can tell that no stone was left unturned in the search for the optimum tyre solution.

One key finding was that while tyres might only account for 2% of operating costs, they actually influence around 50% of operating budgets, so every enhancement made can have a significant beneficial impact helping what Continental termed the ‘Lowest Overall Driving Cost’ (LODC).

Challenges met

So, what did Continental do? For a start it optimised rolling resistance and higher mileage capability – classically conflicting goals in the world of tyre development. “In the past, if a tyre ran particularly smoothly and therefore needed less drive energy, that might come at the expense of robustness

and durability," points out Hinnerk Kaiser, who is responsible for the development of truck and bus tyres at Continental. Now the Continental boffins concentrated on mileage-neutral measures to improve rolling resistance across all components – in the construction of the casing, the treads and the design of the overall contour and tread. The treads, with their two-layer construction (cap base) and innovative compounds, enable a high mileage and considerable robustness while also optimising rolling resistance. The road contact compound (cap) allowed the developers to focus on mileage and robustness.

At the steer axle, a thicker under-tread reduces rolling resistance – but it also enables tread compounds with a focus on extending mileage. At the drive axle, the optimised shoulder design with innovative sipe form in the tread shoulder area plays a key role in promoting even tyre wear –which also has a positive effect on mileage. In the casing, several compound components and a new bead geometry are tailored to optimise rolling resistance. These measures combine to produce an up to 12% improvement in rolling resistance and an up to 10% increase in mileage over

the two predecessor products.

The optimised rolling resistance and high mileage of the new Conti Eco tyres have a positive effect on their environmental footprint. “If our product increases the fuel efficiency of a truck and lasts longer, the result is lower CO2 emissions,” adds Kaiser. Choosing the right tyres is therefore becoming even more important, not least given the emissionsbased toll charges for fleet operators in the EU. “Replacing the outgoing EcoRegional HS 3+/ HD 3+ with the new Conti Eco HS 5/ HD 5 tyres across a fleet of 100 vehicles – which cover around 80,000 km per year in regional use – can save up to €69,000 and 120 tonnes of CO2.”

Retreads are go

Added to which, the new tyres also make a convincing impression with their excellent grip, allow heavy goods vehicles to display safe and secure handling – even in fluctuating weather conditions – and offer outstanding traction throughout their lifespans. Customers can also ask for them to be delivered directly from the factory with latest-generation sensors. This allows the Conti Eco Gen 5 to drive the progress of fleet digitalisation and – in conjunction

with the ContiConnect 2.0 tyre management solution – enables remote monitoring in real time and predictive service planning. This helps to substantially reduce tyre-related operating costs, as do the retreading solutions from Continental. "We designed the casings of the new Conti Eco from the outset to make them ideally suited to retreading. The new tyre line also contributes in this way to greater cost efficiency and sustainability in the transport sector," finishes Kaiser. A retreaded tyre consists up to 70% of material from the old tyre and costs up to 40% less than a new tyre, while offering equal mileage and safety.

If visitorship alone is anything to go by, this year’s CV Show was a rip-roaring success.

CVW was there.

The 2024 CV Show – dubbed by some wags as the LCV Show – took place at the NEC at the end of April and seems to have been a roaring success. Admittedly, and as has been the case generally for recent shows, heavy duty products and CVs were in short supply, and the organisers studding the hall with a few tractors and trailers couldn’t disguise the fact.

That said, and much more positively, if vans and pickups – and electric ones at that

As usual, Totalkare dominated Hall 4 with a comprehensive selection of its workshop equipment –from lifts and wheel aligners to brake testers and tyre changers. One highlight thanks to its recent partnership with Hunter Engineering, was the Hunter Hawkeye XL camerabased wheel aligner. Its precise sensors and software enable accurate measurement and adjustment of wheel alignment parameters, significantly enhancing vehicle safety, tyre longevity, and fuel efficiency. Another new arrival was its heavy duty NAV101 tyre changer, designed to make light work of repetitive tasks in the workshop.

Pick-ups just get bigger and bigger – fitting now that Fall Guy Colt Seavers is back on our screens –and Isuzu UK didn’t disappoint with the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT37. The AT37, developed in collaboration with Arctic Trucks, is the biggest vehicle Isuzu has ever built and represents the pinnacle of the D-Max lineup. Featuring colossal 37” BFGoodrich tyres, an advanced adjustable suspension system, and extensive Arctic re-engineering, the AT37 promises unparalleled off-road capability and durability. Currently though, the D-Max Arctic is a one-off show special and a “statement of intent” rather than something you can rush out and buy.

The 200 exhibitors present got the benefit of over 10,000 visitors over the show’s three days – Tuesday 24th was especially busy at times – not to mention 120 press (yours truly included). Apparently, and lawd knows how this was arrived at, there was one new business lead every 6 seconds (unless this means a badge was scanned on a stand every six seconds, which still isn’t bad); and half of all van operators visiting run fleets of more than 50 LCVs.

All-in-all in was a vibrant outing for a show that seemed in the doldrums not so long ago, but whether it will persuade the CV OEs and heavy duty manufacturers to join in again, to warrant the name ‘CV Show’, remains to be seen. But as a van show, it was a cracker.

GREEN IS THE NEW GOLD

Want to make your workshop more environmentally friendly, produce less waste and be cheaper to run? Witham Group’s MD Nigel Bottom offers some green tips.

Going green in a workshop is always a team effort but transitioning from conventional raw materials to non-toxic materials is one of the hardest areas a garage must consider.

Workshops and garages traditionally use chemicals and fossil-based products like engine oil which are essential to their business and for the vehicle or machine to run properly. Unfortunately, these are not usually environmentally friendly products but there are ways you can identify and promote a greener culture in a workshop by working a little smarter.

When looking at green credentials, you have to look at the full package. Not only the more common elements of sustainability but also right back to your supply chain and the products and services you operate within.

Energy

Review the efficiencies of lighting, heating, ventilation, cooling systems, insulation opportunities, water use, and pollution control. Ideas you might want to consider include:

■ installing solar panels on workshop roofs and depots – they often cover a wide surface area and can help generate new power to heat and light buildings and machinery and equipment.

■ harvest rainwater from the roofs and collect in IBC containers. Use the water to wash and clean vehicles and other equipment throughout the year. Thousands of litres of water can be saved each year.

■ install PIR lighting so no lights are on unless they need to be.

Products

The choice of lubricants that a workshop uses are wide and varied but can you ensure that suppliers offer the following to help you achieve your own greener goals:

■ biodegradable alternatives. For example, Witham’s range of multi-purpose lubricants which uses sheep’s lanolin as the strongest, natural lubricant nature can supply. This has been captured and blended to produce a range of five viscosity oils, from light work like chain and maintenance oils to restoration rust preventers and anti-seize greases, which are not only biodegradable but extremely long lasting, non-toxic and food and water safe.

In addition, there are now alternative fast-acting, biodegradable liquid floor degreaser detergents, offering ultrapowerful, deep cleaning of workshop floors. They are specifically designed to

remove general dirt, tyre scuff marks, silicone film and are an effective degreaser for fats, mineral and synthetic oils, and greases.

■ engine oil viscosities. Lowering CO2 emissions and improving fuel economy is high on the agenda of LCV/HGV owners. Swapping lubricants to a fuelefficient approved alternative can deliver more than 1.5-2.5% fuel saving if carried out correctly. Lower viscosity lubricant sales are on the rise and choosing the right engine oil can make a real difference to emissions and carbon impact and also for the business owner.

Packaging

Purchase not only fully recyclable packaging, but container plastic packaging from some suppliers that are now made from at least 30% recycled materials.

■ choose a lubricant supplier that offers recyclable or recycled packaging.

■ recycling schemes are also available for bulk 200 litre barrels.

■ partner with local recycling and waste suppliers – many schemes are available nationwide.

Bulk storage tanks

Workshops and garages tend to use a lot of the same lubricant products and can have piles of used plastic containers lying around the place, so consider installing bulk storage tanks. Your lubricant supplier can advise on the best way to install the tanks. Lubricants are filled up in the colour coded tanks as required, and the tanks have sight gauges, taps, or pumps and come labelled with the different product names and their application.

Simple, clean and easy to use, these tanks help keep your working space shipshape and avoid spills from containers. They also help avoid important oil contamination and help the environment by using less packaging. They also provide important health and safety requirements for lubricant storage. Using bulk storage tanks across all the workshops and garages in the UK would save thousands and thousands of plastic and metal containers being sent to landfill and would save on waste collection costs and administration.

New technology

You can also make a difference by choosing a supplier where greener technologies and

processes are to the fore. After all, how lubricants are manufactured is changing –this alone can be one of the most beneficial of savings to a workshop environment due to the reduction of carbon footprint levels. The necessity to improve both the time, cost, and environmental impact of the lubricant manufacturing industry, has driven manufacturers like us to develop and employ innovative new processes.

Ours is called Blendtek and it removes the need for base oils and product formulae to be heated up for long periods of time using traditional gas energy. Instead, thousands of tonnes of high-quality workshop oils using no heat and no agitation can be made using solar panels and a simple 25A plug, saving time, energy and drastically reducing the carbon footprint. To evaluate the savings to the environment, Witham has now saved over 33k tonnes of carbon emissions since using the process and heated the equivalent of over 182 homes in the UK for a year. Our overall gas consumption has been reduced by just over 83% and the technology, the energy saving statistics and the principles of

the new ultrasound way of blending is now being shared with the lubricant industry. This exciting breakthrough is all about changing the environmental impact of lubricant manufacturing in the first place. So many other environmental schemes and businesses look to offset their impact by using carbon dumps or sinks and investing in other environmental and climate protection projects. We have instead, come up with a way that prevents the creation of high energy use in the first place and are proud to lead the lubricant industry with this manufacturing innovation. We believe we are the first company in the world to

truly blend in a carbon neutral process. We are determined to help other blenders improve their own sustainability profiles and improve the oil industry’s reputation with substantial impact.

Green credentials

Witham is now the first lubricant blending company in the UK to manufacture its lubricants in a 100% carbon neutral way. The basic principle of ultrasound is to use a high-speed, micro-cinematographic sequence of laser-induced cavitations near to a solid surface. In short – and quantify it –using a traditional blending process (similar to our old plant) using heat to blend and mix generated from gas burners and/or steam from a boiler and standard agitation (paddles) created a carbon footprint of 1962kW per 10,000 litres produced.

Using the Blendtek system, Witham manufactures 10,000 litres of high-quality workshop lubricating oil using no heat and no agitation, and, more importantly, the company only generates a carbon footprint of 6kW per blend.

Ultimately, if everyone looked at their business to see how environmental improvements can be easily made within their business, from what they buy and from whom, workshops and garages could collectively make a huge success of going green. It’s all about small steps that over time can make a big difference.

Put another way, to ask everyone to build a huge brick wall would be daunting to some and impossible for others. However, ask everyone to simply place one brick, one at a time themselves, and encourage their friends to do the same, the wall would build itself.

From minibuses to coaches, servicing PSVs can be a headache. CVW looks at how Stertil Koni provided some relief to Scottish company A1 Coaches.

included some important new features to enhance the operations of its garage. The transport company provides services to the east coast of Fife and the surrounding areas, including Edinburgh and Dundee. Its fleet of vehicles ranges from 8-seat minibuses to 72-seat double-decker coaches, catering for various needs such as weddings, sporting events, airport transfers, day tours, and corporate events.

The company had previously acquired two sets of mobile column lifts from StertilKoni six years ago and were delighted with the performance and reliability. So, it had no hesitation in ordering two new sets, each comprising of four ST1075FWA mobile columns, which, importantly for the

Coaches explains: “The previous lifts were reliable and easy to use. But the new models are another step up in terms of what we were looking for.” Richards continues: “With the adjustable width forks, the new mobile columns allow us to lift vehicles with different size wheels without having to use a special adaptor. This is ideal, as we operate many types of vehicles.”

The new adjustable forks save its technicians precious time and help declutter the workshop. “We no longer have to leave the adaptors around the workshop and fit them in place each time we service a vehicle with different size wheels. With the new version we simply adjust the fork widths and then position them under the bus.”

Additionally, the workshop liked the new full-colour touch screen consoles, which are now bolted to the column frame offering a secure and robust fixing. “With their frequent use and cold evenings here, it was important that the panels were securely fixed to the column lifts. The bolted panels should provide the durability we’ve been after.”

The ebright smart control system has been designed and developed to simplify operation by providing maximum visual information about every lifting operation - all at the fingertips of the workshop engineers. It allows A1 Coaches’ engineers to operate the columns individually, in pairs, or in any other combination from any column in the set.

While positioning of the wireless columns is also totally flexible, enabling them to be used in any configuration around a vehicle.

This flexibility allows the company to future-proof its operations. “While we don’t have any triaxle vehicles at the moment, if we did in the future, the ability to quickly and easily link more mobile columns would allow us to expand the type of vehicles we can operate,” adds Richards.

The ST1075FWA heavy-duty lift is powered by long-life deep cycle batteries which provide optimum performance. Charging is carried out by plugging each individual lift into a 230V single phase supply. In addition, battery life is prolonged because, unlike a screw-lift, power is only used to raise a vehicle therefore less time is spent recharging the lift.

More lifting, less charging

As a result, the mobile columns spend more time lifting and less time charging. “We charge the lifts over the weekend, then use them all week without having to plug them in.” Additionally, Richards continues: “We did look at other cabled lift options but chose the wireless mobile columns as with no cables on the workshop floor, the risk of tripping is removed, an important health and safety benefit for us.”

To optimise the ongoing performance of the mobile column lifts, the Fife-based company took out a three-year service package. “It gives us great peace of mind that if there are any issues with the mobile columns, we can quickly get an engineer onsite to address it –plus, we get discounts on spare parts.”

Each of the ST1075FWA mobile column lifts offers a lifting capacity of 7.5 tonnes, providing an overall safe lifting capacity of 30 tonnes per set. A1 Coaches also ordered eight tall axle stands to complement the lifting facilities offered by the column lifts, providing them with a full package of lifting equipment.

CVW hears from Brixworth Engineering about its latest formidable bit of kit – its largest Benco side-mounting turnover engine stand to date.

STAND THAT DELIVERS

Brixworth Engineering, the manufacturer of the globally renowned Benco engine stands, has produced its largest-ever side-mounting turnover stand. Supplied to the Croydon facility of leading power transmission specialist Voith Turbo, the Benco 1050 (an upgrade to Brixworth’s standard Benco

1000 engine stand) is helping this progressive plant to inspect and service a variety of engines and transmissions. With a load capacity of 5000kg (at 500mm from the mounting spindle) and a turning capacity of 10,000Nm, the Benco 1050 supplied to Voith Turbo facilitates the manipulation of complete engines for

inspection, repair or modification. Moreover, it is a mobile version featuring a motor drive to deliver rotational speed up to 4rpm, although customers can opt for floor mounting and manual operation if preferable.

Control of the Benco 1050 at Voith Turbo is via a fixed pushbutton station, with pendant control available as an option. As a further point of note, Brixworth designed and manufactured additional mounting arms to minimise deflection throughout the loading and rotation process.

Companies operating fleets of trucks, vans or buses run the risk of hefty fines and their vehicles being ordered off the roads if they fail to keep on top of cleaning and maintenance, warns Dave Barker, Britannia Wash Systems.

Maintaining a clean fleet of commercial vehicles is an essential element of transport operations, not only to ensure the brand is well represented on the roads but to also achieve regulatory compliance and operational efficiency, as well as preserve the life of the vehicle and retain a better residual value.

For example, the Highway Code stipulates that ‘windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision,’ with fines of up to £2,500 for any business which fails to meet this obligation. The regulations extend to registration plates, with drivers whose plates are dirty facing on the spot fines of £100 under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994

Life of grime

Heavy mileage also results in unsightly vehicles which, without exception, is offputting to clients and prospects. Who would want their fresh or frozen food produce transported on a vehicle covered in grime from the roads? In any case, such grime reduces a brand’s visibility and more importantly can also put drivers and vehicles at an increased risk of accidents.

In addition, a build-up of dirt from the roads can lead to corrosion and structural damage of a vehicle and its components, increasing the chance of a failed MOT, heavy fines and even the withdrawal of an operator’s licence if a defective vehicle is pulled over by police.

Therefore, regular cleaning of commercial fleets is imperative to ensure any risk is minimised and that vehicles continue to achieve their optimum performance. Of course, any regular cleaning regime is going to consume big volumes of water, so owners and operators should look to those washing systems that are sustainable and environmentally more friendly. Our own range employs recycling

and conservation elements to reduce water usage and improve carbon footprint and integrates with a variety of wash bays helping vehicle operators reduce costs and improve efficiency. They collect wastewater from different sources on site – for example, from a vehicle wash bay – filter it so it can be safely re-used.

Instead of running clean, unused water directly from the mains, businesses are now able to source and re-use a supply which is already treated and filtered to the required standard, saving energy in the process by avoiding the continual treatment and processing of new supplies of water.

The reclaimed water is safe for cleaning, heating, cooling and other purposes, reducing the energy and carbon otherwise needed to pump, transport, heat and store process water from alternative sources.

Savings all round

The risk of legionnaires’ disease is also reduced, with the systems able to check, monitor and control specific risks, allowing the operator to run the wash plant with confidence that all water spray particles are within specified requirements before distributing to the wash pad. This process also incorporates all tanks associated with the water processing including the underground water storage facility associated to all wash plants, again unique to the design.

Good news is that the end result is a reduced water bill, reduced carbon footprint and a reduced risk of legionnaires' exposure without compromising on the presentation of the fleet.

Some companies may find the regular washing of each of their vehicles on a regular basis an unnecessary irritant associating it with taking time out of the working day as well as increased costs. Although it does eat into the working day, it can save operators a lot of financial pain and potentially catastrophic consequences of cutting corners and taking short cuts.

Essentially a good system provides a strong return on investment, especially if you own a large fleet of commercial vehicles that requires regular cleaning or operate multiple locations throughout the country.

Growing a business entails making some big decisions and spending quite a bit of money. So, when Rogers Vehicle Servicing (RVS) decided that growth was the way forward it called in workshop equipment specialist MAHA UK. The company was employed to project manage the expansion which included the installation of an ATF lane, including pit, MBT 7250 EUROSYSTEM commercial brake tester, MLT 1000 headlight tester and LMS 20.2 axle play detectors, as well as two-post lifts, the MA STAR 3.5 and 5.5.

Rogers Civil Engineering director, Natalie Birch, outlined the challenge: “We outgrew our existing facility with our expanding fleet. Also, we used to have to travel miles for servicing and testing – it was always in the middle of the day too. That meant vehicle downtime, which wasn't practical for the business.

“We needed to upsize; we had a defined plan to move our in-house facility to a larger ven-ue to create a standalone business, offering services on a larger scale and to external cus-tomers. Thankfully we found an ideal location, situated very close to RCE, but we didn’t have experience in running a commercial garage and the equipment. That’s when we en-gaged with MAHA UK. Now, we can work at night, reduce downtime and offer a larger menu of services in the process.”

Quality street

The partnership between RVS and MAHA UK was built on a shared desire of quality. RVS sought equipment that would deliver that, and which would allow the company to roll-out the services within the workshop. Natalie revealed: “We went out to competitive tender and MAHA was the

standout choice. We also received recommendations from industry insiders and even competitors that had utilised MAHA UK’s services before – it was a unanimous verdict. We were confident with our choice.”

And has that choice been vindicated? Natalie replied: “MAHA is at the premium end of the market, so ‘premium’ is what we expected. Military precision

That sentiment is echoed by Keith Evans, a consultant for RCE, who oversaw the dayto-day installation. He explained that MAHA’s experience, knowledge and guidance proved “invaluable”, as RVS navigated the complexities of transitioning into the vehicle servicing and testing sector.

Not only was RVS investing in a new industry, but Keith, following a 26-year career in the military, was also new to the sector –but he was able to apply accrued skills from his past. Keith enjoyed the experience and thanked the supplier for its support from

Mixamate is provider of mix on site concrete and screed in the UK, operating extensively throughout London and the Southeast, as well as in selected branches across the country. With the implementation of the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) Phase 2 looming, Mixamate was faced with the challenge of ensuring its fleet complied with the new safety regulations.

To address this challenge, Mixamate partnered with Vision Techniques who equipped its fleet with the latest Direct Vision Standard Progressive Safe System (DVS PSS). This kit included sophisticated AI camera technology designed to detect and warn drivers of VRUs, both at the nearside of the vehicle and at the front, fulfilling the requirements for blind spot and moving off information systems (BSIS & MOIS).

Vision Techniques' installation engineers installed and commissioned the DVS PSS across Mixamate's fleet. Upon completion, Vision Techniques provided the official documentation, essential for supporting evidence when applying for new permits.

BRAKING PROMISES

Dr Air Brake goes into detail about its brake safety system called Reverse Smart, an HGV auto braking safety system that promises to put a stop to reversing accidents.

Reverse Smart is a product which has been gaining momentum as large fleet operators see the huge advantages of installing the system for what is a small investment. Not only do they now have far fewer accident damaged vehicles with high repair costs to the business each month, but they are also improving worksite safety for their workers that are in the vicinity of reversing vehicles during onsite operations.

It is the result of over 35 years’ experience in dealing with ABS/EBS braking systems including research into auto brake systems. Essentially, it’s an autobrake reverse system that fits onto all types of commercial vehicles and plant.

So how does it work?

Reverse Smart uses a radar which is unaffected by any weather condition, be it rain, snow or ice and has also proven to be unaffected when covered in tar on a tar sprayer. The radar sensor is fitted to the back of the vehicle for reverse only auto brake but can be upgraded to feature on both rear and the front of the vehicle. The sensor constantly builds a picture of everything

within its programmable range, like when air traffic control sees an aircraft in the skies. Any object detected by the radar is checked for distance and closing speed and based on this, the system informs the driver. There is an in-cab dash warning offering visual and audible alerts and if the object/person gets too close within the programmed danger zone, then the brakes are automatically applied for three seconds, without the driver intervention. This allows vital seconds for the driver to check cameras/mirrors to see if it is safe to carry on reversing or exit the cab to inspect the area.

This product is especially useful for refuse collection and cleaning vehicles, when manoeuvring around in tight pedestrian areas, working in and around schools, shopping centres and busy city streets, where people can dash out behind the vehicle thinking the driver has seen them. We have seen in our research that a driver cannot look at all the mirrors and monitors at the same time, so it’s easy to miss a person entering from the side and it only takes a small distraction or trip by that person, to find they’re now in the danger zone without the driver ever knowing.

All design and manufacturing are done in house with a team of highly skilled engineers putting together all parts of this E11 type approved product and the system can be programmed exactly to customer requirements.

Benefits of this product are: Autobrake is pulsed, so it’s not a sudden jolt and more of a controlled stop. Drivers prefer this and it does not damage the drive train, so no warranty issues.

All software is written in-house, so it can be tailored to every installation to best suit vehicle application and customers wishes. The product is VCA approved and VCA audited to ensure conformity of production.

The system uses a specially designed 77Ghz radar to optimise performance especially onsite operations.

When running a fleet of vehicles, safety is obviously a key consideration, and maintaining perfect visibility from windscreens is vital. Dean Proctor, head of training and technical at Esprit Windscreen Repair Equipment, elaborates.

If a screen has a chip, it can turn easily into a crack, and can possibly leave the vehicle off the road until the screen can be replaced, and all at additional cost to operators. For drivers, a screen without imperfections means visibility through the glass is (subject to cleaning) perfect and their vision isn’t obscured, nor are they distracted by marks on the screen.

And thanks to modern proprietary windscreen systems, many fleet companies are now largely able to repair their own screens in-house. This is quite straightforward and necessarily saves time, money and reduces vehicle downtime.

Rather than entrust screens to any repair system, it pays to choose an established one – for instance, so Esprit was developed over 40 years ago – and one with a focus on large screens, especially those increasingly being used from the 1980s onwards.

Inject, cure, ready

The system has certainly improved since then (it used to take an afternoon to cure the resin, now it takes 75 seconds!) but at the heart of it, the principles remain the same: resin is injected into a break, cured and the screen is ready.

Unfortunately, in 2000, the British Standards committee moved away from performance-based criteria for assessing windscreen repair systems: a poor decision in our opinion. Consequently, in the absence of a meaningful BS to rely on, buyers should look for other, credible

accreditations. One such independent test comes from TUV Rheinland, a performance product test that ensures repairs are up to the same standard as a new screen (the ECE R43 test). But what if staff have never carried out windscreen repair before? Is it straightforward?

Actually, it is simple to learn and the leading companies, like Esprit, carry out in person training. In our case, which could be at our Staffs HQ (free) or onsite (for a fee). This could be for a whole team, and as a refresher course if needed.

In the logistics and transportation industry, maintaining the efficiency of light commercial vehicles (LCV) and heavy goods vehicles (HGV) is paramount. However, an acute shortage of skilled technicians capable of maintaining and repairing these vehicles is causing significant challenges.

While a widespread issue facing the entire aftermarket, several factors have notably contributed to the technician shortage within the LCV and HGV sectors. The rapid expansion of the logistics industry – fuelled by a surge in demand for e-commerce and next-day deliveries, has led to an increased need for these vehicles. Couple this with the increasing

technological sophistication of vehicles entering the space requiring complex repair and maintenance and the fact that the supply of skilled vehicle technicians has not kept pace, and the situation is exacerbated.

This gap in skills is having a detrimental impact on the average fleet vehicle off-road (VOR) time, and the implications of this are far-reaching. Not only do extended VOR times affect the operational bottom line but also client and end-user satisfaction. In a sector where time is literally money, having a vehicle out of commission translates to lost revenue and compromised service delivery.

With the industry grappling with these challenges, innovative solutions which

leverage technology should be adopted to make workshops more efficient, plug gaps in available skills and ensure a first-time fix. With software-defined vehicles increasingly rolling into the workshop, the intersection of integrating technology with vehicle servicing and repair has never been more critical.

Autotech Connect, a division of automotive employment and training solutions provider Autotech Group, was launched last year. Initially created to help the aftermarket mitigate the challenges of the growing risk of cybercrime while implementing technology into the workshop to promote greater efficiency, we are seeing a greater demand from the industry for technology to be used as an effective tool to approach problem-solving and staff productivity.

Assisted reality

One solution currently being trialled across the LCV and HGV industry is assisted reality (AR) headsets. Already creating tangible results, one commercial vehicle manufacturer has revealed an increase in repair efficiency of 93%

The AR headset allows a master technician working remotely to connect with multiple workshops and technicians. For the master technicians, the ability to cover more sites remotely translates to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and a more sustainable operation overall.

While bridging the skills gap, the implementation of the AR headsets facilitates improved diagnosis times and streamlines workflows, ensuring vehicle repair and maintenance are conducted swiftly and accurately, dramatically reducing VOR times.

Remote working

Trialling AR headsets, one LCV network enabled over 65 technicians to remotely connect directly with experts at its technical centre, leading to a staggering 93% increase in repair efficiency and a notable improvement in customer satisfaction attributed to the reduced maintenance time.

Furthermore, an added benefit of master technicians minimising their time on the road is the reduction in emissions. For the LCV network, this equated to 2.5 tonnes of CO2 expenditure being saved.

The integration of AR technology in the LCV and HGV sectors represents a significant leap forward in addressing the pressing challenges of skills shortages and extended VOR times. Vehicles are becoming increasingly technical putting more pressure on the workshops who, already facing a depleting pool of talent, do not always have the necessary skilled resources to repair and maintain them. By utilising technical tools, workshops can enhance repair and efficiency while improving customer satisfaction and contributing to environmental sustainability.

The use of AR headsets can also contribute towards employee retention. Theindustry needs to preserve the skills of master technicians and, having the ability to provide remote support may keep those, considering retirement, in the industry. In addition, vehicle technicians within the workshop are also empowered and upskilled in the process, enabling them to operate with unprecedented efficiency and fix first time.

Another sector impacted by the skills shortage, particularly as its fleet is increasingly electrified, is the emergency services. Many have cited that their service is seeing up to a third of fleets being off the road at any one time due to the backlog in repairs, and not having the resources with the right skill set to fix issues. Leveraging AR headsets within this sector has already begun to yield an increase in efficiency and repair times, showcasing the transformative potential of this technology.
