Andy Reakes is responsible for driving growth and innovation in the industry by developing and implementing strategic initiatives and partnerships, including technology developments. Andy works with government, main contractors, awarding organisations, training providers and employers to develop occupational frameworks that support upskilling. This includes Working Group 2: Installers – part of the Working Groups established post-Grenfell. He is a member of the EAS Management Committee and other standard seeking and strategic bodies across the sector. In his update, Andy will explain changes to individual competence requirements within ECS and as part of the Building Safety Regulator requirements. He will share guidance on EAS Qualifications for QS status and how to achieve and demonstrate the evidence of competence required to enter projects. The session will also give an overview of CSCS Smart Check, one app capable of checking all 2 million plus CSCS Alliance cards, across 38 schemes. 13.00–13.30 | RCD CONSIDERATIONS FOR RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGY
In the context of renewable energy systems, the correct use of Residual Current Devices (RCDs) is crucial for ensuring electrical safety. For air source heat pumps, RCDs should be selected based on the specific electrical characteristics of the inverter, including its power rating and operational conditions whilst considering the manufacturer’s instructions. When selecting protective devices for solar PV or battery storage installations, it is vital to ensure that any bidirectional energy flow is considered. Additionally, the assembly rating of distribution board must be carefully considered to handle the combined load of all supplies. In summary, correct RCD selection and distribution board assembly ratings are essential to protect users, ensure system reliability, and comply with the requirements of BS 7671.
