LED ITBE
Welcome to the March issue of PEW! It feels good writing that even though I’m actually writing this in February, the cold, dark nights of January and February are coming to an end. When I walked into the bathroom this morning I thought I’d left the light on, before realising that it was actually sunlight streaming through the window, happy times ahead!
I always do my best to steer clear of politics on this page as there are already enough opinions out there and this page really just serves as a friendly introduction, linking real life with topical industry subjects. I am even more reluctant to stray into American politics, but when President Trump delivers such a gift of a talking point for the construction industry then it is very hard to ignore.
Headlines such as ‘Freedom to choose lightbulbs’ and ‘Trump reignites the lightbulb wars’ might once have been dreamt up in the writers’ room of a satirical comedy but in 2025 it is in fact reality, as the 47th (and 45th) President of the United States has declared war on LED technology and vowed to bring back the traditional lightbulb.
“ Headlines such as ‘Freedom to choose lightbulbs’ and ‘Trump reignites the lightbulb wars’ might once have been dreamt up in the writers’ room of a satirical comedy.”
Of all of Trump’s many gripes with the world I didn’t think LED lighting was going to be up there but he has indeed signed an order dubbed ‘Unleashing American Energy’, designed to remove ‘burdensome and ideologically motivated regulations that have impeded the development of [natural] resources’. In an ironic moment of self-awareness he also stated during his first term that “you look better with incandescent lights”, adding, “of course being a vain person, that’s very important to me.” With lines like that the future of satire really is in danger!
Such is the nature of American politics, the ‘lightbulb wars’ have been a thing ever since George W. Bush started the transition to LEDs in 2007 when he signed the Energy Independence and Security Act. Barack Obama kept things going in the same direction, before consecutive reversals occurred in the Trump/Biden/Trump era.
Given the advancement and widespread popularity of LEDs in today’s market it remains to be seen how successful Trump will be in his quest to bring back the incandescent lightbulb, and I can’t speak for all Americans so all we can do for now is watch with interest from afar.
Back on this side of the Atlantic, Recolight continues to carry out sterling work in its mission to deliver a circular economy for lighting. On page 26 Chief Executive Nigel Harvey explains how electrical wholesalers can play their part, and we’ve also got features from Ovia and Ansell Lighting making up our special feature on Lighting, while in this month’s Soapbox column you can find out how Zumtobel Group is advancing its sustainability journey.
If you’re reading, Mr President, enjoy the issue!

Everything Electrical, part of the Velair Group, has announced a new partnership with Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW). Beginning January 2025, £1 from every Hydra hand dryer sold will be donated to support the life-saving work of Mountain Rescue teams across England and Wales.
EVERYTHINGELECTRICAL ANNOUNCESCHARITY PARTNERSHIP WITH MOUNTAIN RESCUEENGLAND AND WALES
The partnership was inspired by a personal experience involving Velair Group CEO, Matt Anderson, who requiredMountain Rescue assistance during a climb on Snowdon. Following an incident on the mountain, Mountain Rescue volunteers helped Matt to safety, leaving a lasting impression of their dedication and skill.
“Experiencing firsthand the extraordinary work of Mountain Rescue volunteers gave me a new perspective on how vital their services are,” said Matt Anderson, CEO of Velair Group.
“These teams operate in the toughest of conditions to save lives, relying heavily on donations to continue their work. It’s a privilege to support them through our Everything Electrical brand and the success of the Hydra product line.”
Gruff Owen is chair of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team (MRT), the team that was involved in Matt’s rescue: “This was one of two incidents on that day in
April and more than 20 of our team members were involved that afternoon. Llanberis is the busiest team in the country with over 320 incidents in 2024 and we rely on donations and financial support to enable our small charity to provide this service on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the surrounding mountains. It’s rare to hear from a casualty after an incident, so we’re especially grateful to Matt for his generosity.”
Mike Park is the Chief Executive Officer of Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW): “Connections with businesses like this give us an opportunity to let more people know about our work as unpaid volunteers and the potential to add up to £4,000 into our funds this year is really appreciated.

DOMUS VENTILATIONDUCTING TO BE MANUFACTURED WITH RECYCLED PLASTIC
Domus Ventilation has announced that its ventilation ducting will now be manufactured primarily from recycled plastic.
The company already uses 100% recycalate on its rectangular ducting and over 95% of its fittings use 100% High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) which comes from post-consumer recycled plastic. As part of the Genuit group, which has committed to have 62% of its ducting source material come from recycled plastics by 2025 where at all feasible, Domus Ventilation has now progressed
to manufacturing its entire ducting range primarily from recycled plastic.
Commenting on this latest development, Domus Ventilation Product Manager, Paul Williams, said:
“The built environment accounts for approximately 30% of annual carbon emissions in the UK. Whilst the lion’s share is generated in the day-to-day operation of buildings, carbon emissions embodied into buildings during manufacturing and construction are significant. As a manufacturer in the building sector, we fully accept our
responsibilities in regards to this. Using plastic that is destined for landfill, recycling it, and using it in our ducting is just one way in which we are making our products and our manufacturing more sustainable.
“One aspect I would like to reassure customers on is the quality of our ducting, which will not be affected by this. Whilst colour variation is to be expected due to the nature of the recycalate, the form, fit, function and quality remains.”

Scolmore Group has retained its Bronze Sustainability Rating Medal first awarded by EcoVadis in 2022. This achievement is all the more significant as it was awarded despite much more stringent eligibility criteria introduced last year. As a result, Scolmore Group’s new ranking places them in the top 35% globally of all companies rated by EcoVadis, a global leader in business sustainability assessments.
Assessment
Having improved its scoring from 56/100 to 66/100, in November Scolmore Group was just one percentile short of achieving a Silver Medal. The EcoVadis medals are awarded on the basis of the following
percentile benchmarks: Platinum Top 1% (99+ percentile), Gold Top 5% (95+ percentile), Silver Top 15% (85+ percentile) and Bronze Top 35% (65+ percentile).
The EcoVadis assessment evaluates 21 sustainability criteria across four core themes: Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement. In each of the four themes, Scolmore Group saw its scores rise significantly from 2022 when it was first awarded its Bronze medal, with well above industry average scores achieved in each of the four categories.
Responsible for driving the EcoVadis sustainability initiative at Scolmore Group is Manuela Rubino Courtney, Group Legal and Compliance Manager. She commented: “We have been in a fortunate position over the past few years that both revenue and market share have increased, despite the many macroeconomic challenges that we have encountered along the way. We are keen to continue to grow our business sustainably in line with company growth and contribute positively to society whilst we are on our journey.
Commitment to sustainability
“Scolmore, Ovia, Unicrimp and ESP were awarded ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) in January 2024. The latest EcoVadis medal endorses the work we have done so far in making our business offer sustainable. It bolsters our commitment to making a positive impact and embedding corporate sustainability into our culture, strategy and day-to-day operations across the Group. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we aim to build upon this recognition by further enhancing our CSR initiatives and strive for higher levels of EcoVadis certification in the future.”
“ Scolmore Group saw its scores rise significantly from 2022 when it was first awarded its Bronze medal. ”

NEW EDATA SPONSOR ANNOUNCED
Luceco PLC (BG Electrical) is the 18th manufacturer to announce their sponsorship of EDATA, the electrotechnical sector’s data pool which is managed by the Electrical Distributors’ Association.
The 28 sponsors, a mix of manufacturers and wholesalers of various sizes, have each pledged their support to the data pool which offers EDA wholesalers and branches free access to information and images on 280,000+ products sold through the supply chain.
LUCECO ANNOUNCED AS LATEST EDATA DATA POOL SPONSOR WHOLESALERS REVEAL STRATEGIES TO TACKLE RISING COSTS
The results of the first State of the Sector survey for 2025 from Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) reveal a supply chain battling with rising business costs in every direction: wages, energy, rental costs for business premises, insurance premiums, as well as increases in the price of products supplied by manufacturers.
Over 41% of wholesalers and 35% of manufacturers reported a rent increase for their premises. Businesses were also seeing significant increases in the cost of business insurance premiums across car/fleet, healthcare, buildings, contents and trade credit, with some businesses seeing a rise in car/fleet insurance premiums in excess of 25%.
From increasing prices, through to reducing opening hours, EDA Wholesalers are faced with some difficult choices, as these results show:
Ian Hunter, Trade Sales Director at Luceco PLC, said of their sponsorship: “I am a very strong advocate for EDATA. It is through the EDATA data pool that Luceco gives EDA wholesalers easy access to rich accurate product data that helps them deliver exemplary customer service and increased sales, whether that’s across the trade counter, through tenders and submittals or e-commerce. Luceco has been part of EDATA since 2020. Becoming an EDATA sponsor is an important strategic decision for us, demonstrating
our commitment to the data pool, and playing our part in its development.”
Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, said “Luceco’s sponsorship means they gain a place on the EDATA Steering Group, giving them a voice in how the data pool evolves. Ian has been a strong supporter of EDATA since its inception and it is thanks to the generosity of all the sponsors that we can make access to EDATA free to every EDA wholesaler and branch.”
In Q1 2025, EDA Wholesalers revealed their top three operational headaches as:
1. Inflation in business overheads and passing these on to customers.
2. Online prices making margins tight.
3. Upward pressure on all wages driven by the increases in the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage on the overall wage bill.
With the green technologies opportunity always high on the EDA agenda, the sector’s opportunity in heat pumps was also explored. Around 9% of wholesaler respondents confirmed that they had entered this market during 2024, with a further 22% of respondents planning to follow suit during 2025.
Encouragingly, 59% of respondents already trading in this market reported a small increase in demand during Q4
2024, with a further 24% reporting a moderate to significant increase in demand during the same period. One wholesaler commented that there is currently a “huge push in the north west to install heat pumps.”
Q1’s survey also explored the recent changes to inheritance tax: 29% of wholesaler and 17% of manufacturer respondents revealed that they are likely to be adversely affected. To help EDA businesses understand their inheritance tax options, the EDA is planning information sessions.

A TRUSTEE’S PERSPECTIVE
Andy Roach’s journey with the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) spans two decades, beginning with a simple yet persuasive conversation at an event in Yorkshire. Introduced to the charity by industry figures Eric Dyer and the late Les Adams, Andy was encouraged to get involved. In 2004, he joined the board on a rotational seat –and he’s been a dedicated part of EIC ever since.
A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO EIC
Reflecting on what initially inspired him, Andy recalls witnessing the invaluable work the charity was doing, particularly in the early 2000s when Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) were far less common. “Seeing what the charity has done for families, including some of my own, made a lasting impression on me,” he shares.
Now, as a trustee, Andy is keen to enhance the charity’s visibility in areas where he feels it needs greater presence –especially within the transmission and distribution sectors. “We need to reestablish our involvement and ensure that those in these industries know about the support available to them.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS AND PROUD ACHIEVEMENTS
When asked about his most memorable experiences with EIC, Andy finds it hard to choose just one. A standout moment was a project in Yorkshire where the committee supported a family in need. “I remember going down to help and paint their fence at the end of the project - it was such a rewarding experience.”
“ Andy is keen to enhance the charity’s visibility in areas where he feels it needs greater presence – especially within the transmission and distribution sectors.”
More recently, hosting PowerBall 2024 was a defining moment. Having previously attended as a guest, Andy gained a new appreciation for the immense effort that goes into making the event a success. “Seeing our community come together and witnessing the generosity of our supporters firsthand was truly inspiring.”
EIC’S IMPACT AND FUTURE GROWTH
EIC has played a critical role in supporting individuals and businesses within the electrical sector for 120 years, providing crucial aid to those facing hardship. Andy is passionate about ensuring this legacy continues. “We’ve been successful for the last 120 years, so let’s see what we can achieve in the next 100!”
Looking ahead, he envisions the charity expanding its reach and extending its services, ensuring even more people can benefit from its support. One initiative he’s particularly excited about is the 120 year
campaign. “I’ve been encouraging all my colleagues and friends to take part in the abseil later this year –it’s a fantastic way to get involved and make a difference.”
THE REWARD OF GIVING BACK
For Andy, the most rewarding aspect of his work with EIC is witnessing the tangible impact of its initiatives. “Through events, we see people getting excited about supporting the charity and coming together to make a difference. That’s what it’s all about.”
His advice to anyone considering getting involved? “Just do it. EIC has an incredible team, and the trustees are here to support you. Help us raise awareness and be part of something truly meaningful.”
With dedicated individuals like Andy Roach at the helm, EIC continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of those in the electrical industry - ensuring that support, generosity, and community spirit remain at its core.
FACE TO FACE LINIAN
In this month’s Face to Face we speak with Lynne Jhangeer, COO at LINIAN, and find out about her new role and the evolution of the company.
Q What is the history of LINIAN as a company?
A. LINIAN is a really proud family-owned business. My brother Ian and I took over LINIAN in 2015 after our dad invented a revolutionary, single piece cable clip to install FP cables in the first instance. It transformed the industry by removing the need for plastic plugs and screws, and was driven by a need within our wholesale business at that time to work faster, safer and simpler on site.
Q
How has the business evolved over the years?
A. The business has grown massively in terms of people, our range and our brand presence. It’s gone from a small family business to one that has the network to trade in over 100 countries across the world. We now have two sites to operate from, increasing our capacity out to 2027 with a view to having a custom-built facility for 2028 and beyond.
Q What are your key responsibilities as LINIAN COO?
A. As the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of LINIAN, my key responsibilities would include overseeing the company's day-today operations and ensuring that all business functions are running smoothly and efficiently. My specific responsibilities would encompass operational strategy, process optimisation, team management and acquisition, scaling operations for future growth plans, risk and vendor management, customer satisfaction and innovation in operational processes leveraging new

technologies on the market. We’re currently using Artificial Intelligence within processes already at LINIAN and investigating the implementation of robotics which are two of my secret geek topics. I also have direct input into the financial strategy of the business. These responsibilities help ensure LINIAN operates efficiently, stays competitive in the market, and delivers value to its stakeholders.
QHow do LINIAN clips stand apart from other cable management products and solutions on the market?
A. LINIAN are the original single component, cable fixing on the market with our range expanding rapidly. We anticipate what installers need by being tuned into them and turning their needs into other products. We not only remove plastic from the supply chain, i.e. plastic plugs but also through packaging which is attractively printed with organic water based inks and made from recycled cardboard. It can be recycled again, we are market leading in this field and have won the Made In Britain Award for The Best Sustainable Packaging. It’s a core pillar of our business to manufacture here in the UK, shortening supply chains.
QHow has the growing EV charging market impacted the business?
A. The EV market has no doubt contributed to our accelerated growth plans. As the “go to” product for major installers taking large industrial cables into people’s homes, our 18th Edition sleek and aesthetically pleasing solution in the LINIAN SuperClips allow us to make this more attractive to the home owner. The ease of install is also a winner with electricians!
QWhat are the benefits of stocking LINIAN products and how do wholesalers become an official stockist?
“ We have super-secret collaborations to be announced and brilliant new inventions to bring to you in just a couple of weeks.”
A. The benefit of stocking LINIAN products are vast. You have access to our technical support and back up, pre-access to our latest innovations and a great product on your shelf that installers and their customers want. Add a comprehensive marketing pack to boot and you’re onto a winner. If you’d like to find out more about becoming a stockist, then you can easily contact our super friendly sales team who would be delighted to talk you through it today.
QWhat are LINIAN’s plans for the year ahead?
A. LINIAN are ambitious as always in the year ahead. We have super-secret collaborations to be announced and brilliant (if I do say so myself) new inventions to bring to you in just a couple of weeks. We’ll be at trade shows to let installers get their hands on them and even better –a whole new facility in the making to at least double our capacity. It’s an exciting time to be at LINIAN, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

Taking smart lighting efficiency to the next level, light monitoring dashboards are poised to revolutionise the industry. Kate Baker, Connected Lighting Manager at Ansell Lighting, provides an in-depth look at this technology, highlighting the commercial advantages for wholesalers.
BOARD MEETING
In a world fighting against rising energy bills and carbon emissions, technology that offers an insight into energy use and optimisation is worth its weight in gold.
Enter light monitoring dashboards. Used in conjunction with smart lighting systems, light monitoring dashboards are a brandnew technology that can provide users with the extensive insights needed to manage lighting use intelligently and effectively, cutting direct and indirect energy use.
Designed for use in commercial projects, they provide building owners and operators with a visual display of a building’s lighting system, collecting real-time information from smart fittings across the entire lighting installation network –whether that is one single building unit or a multi-site network. Offering central monitoring capability, dashboards capture data points such as energy consumption per fixture, occupancy patterns, brightness levels, temperature/environmental conditions around fixtures and maintenance alerts.
Considering that lighting accounts for up to 40% of a building’s total electricity consumption, the potential cost and energy savings these monitoring devices can deliver are huge. This level of visibility is transforming the way lighting systems can be managed and enabling data-driven decisions to be made to optimise energy use and reduce waste.
Key selling points
One such insight and a key selling point for wholesalers is that light monitoring dashboards can help users to identify inefficient lighting use such as lights operating unnecessarily or outside of programmed parameters. By highlighting such issues, building operators can adjust their installations at the click of a button, rectifying inefficiencies or re-scheduling settings to ensure energy is only used when and where it is needed.
Similarly, by analysing occupancy patterns, dashboards can also be used to optimise lighting schedules, again minimising any unnecessary energy use. For instance, lighting in less frequently used areas, such as storage rooms or stairwells, can be automated to turn off when the spaces are unoccupied, ensuring efficiency without compromising functionality.
Dashboards also offer huge benefits when it comes to maintenance. Providing specific insights into operating status and
performance, they can help building operators to reduce the need for manual inspections and reactive repairs. For example, sensors can detect when a luminaire is nearing the end of its lifecycle or operating inefficiently due to overheating, enabling operators to address issues before they escalate. This targeted approach ensures maintenance teams focus their efforts where they are most needed and don’t waste time carrying out unnecessary checks. Similarly, testing of emergency and non-emergency luminaires can also be carried out at the touch of a button, minimising the need for maintenance teams to drive around sites and manually check individual units. This predictive maintenance not only enhances efficiency but also supports wider carbon reduction efforts by reducing vehicle emissions and energy consumption associated with routine maintenance trips.
Another key selling point that wholesalers should be quick to share with customers is that light monitoring dashboards simplify what are often complex and time-consuming compliance and reporting procedures. All lighting data is actively stored on the dashboard and can be accessed at the touch of a button. Reports can be instantly compiled and customised to meet specific regulatory requirements, with accurate documentation readily available whenever needed. Whether it's maintenance logs,
tracking energy efficiency metrics or emergency lighting checks, this can save operators significant time and effort.
Commercial benefits
Commercially, light monitoring dashboards offer wholesalers a lucrative opportunity to increase revenues. The technology is increasingly in demand and by offering dashboards alongside a smart lighting range, wholesalers will be able to create a whole new revenue stream. By offering this level of innovation, wholesalers will also be able to demonstrate a higher level of service and expertise. Providing customers with a cutting-edge solution that offers significant added value in terms of long-term cost and energy savings, the technology will help them to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market.
Sales techniques
When it comes to selling light monitoring dashboards, as with any new technology,
the most important place for wholesalers to start is ensuring sales staff receive comprehensive training. A well trained sales team is key to successfully introducing these innovative products to the market and driving sales interest.
Training should cover both technical and practical aspects of light monitoring dashboards. Sales teams need to understand how the technology works, including its integration with smart lighting systems, the data it collects, and the actionable insights it provides. This technical knowledge will enable staff to answer customer queries effectively, explain the benefits of the technology in detail, and address any concerns potential buyers may have.
Staff should also be able to confidently use and demonstrate how the products work, showcasing their features and functionality in a way that resonates with customers. Practical, hands-on training sessions that simulate real-world scenarios
can help sales teams build familiarity with the dashboards, ensuring they can walk customers through setup, operation, and troubleshooting with ease.
Training on the commercial advantages light monitoring dashboards bring to endusers is also hugely important and sales staff should be able to discuss key points such as the benefits of the technology, its ability to optimise energy use, reduce operational costs, streamline maintenance, and simplify reporting.
Light monitoring dashboards are an important advancement in technology and will prove to be an indispensable tool for building owners and operators. By adopting these products into their product ranges from the outset, wholesalers will not only be able to position themselves as forward-thinking suppliers but will benefit from increased revenue and sales. MARKET FORCES
The 17th edition of the UK Lighting Market Report 20242028 from AMA Research provides a comprehensive review of the rapidly evolving lighting industry. Significant changes have impacted the market in the last two to three years. The most significant of these are new regulatory requirements, the wider adoption of LED solutions, as well as the strong growth in smart and connected lighting technologies.
The UK lighting market is reported to be a mature market that has undergone significant changes in recent years. The most important of these being the withdrawal from production of incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lighting. These products are progressively being replaced by energy efficient LED lighting; however, with higher levels of competition, this technology has seen a sharp fall in price over the last decade, impacting on market value growth.
The focus of the report is on the main types of lighting products and systems used in residential and non-residential applications and covers the key product categories – lamps, luminaires and lighting controls. Although these have been relatively separated in the past, the market is now witnessing an increasing overlap between these categories. Much of this can be attributed to the development of connected lighting systems, such as equipment combining luminaires with lighting controls, and also the growth in the number of luminaires supplied with integrated LED lamps.
According to a recent research report, the UK lighting market is forecast to reach a value of approximately £2.3 billion by 2028, experiencing a steady growth trajectory despite recent economic fluctuations. Mike Collins, Managing Director at Ovia, looks at the details of the report and what is behind the projected growth.
The UK lighting industry is facing a number of challenges, including a decline in construction new orders, increasing competition, high production costs, changing legislation, stricter health and safety regulations and environmental issues. As such, the market is expected to remain flat and be supported primarily by RMI activity. The market is then forecast to return to steady growth in 2025 to the end of the forecast period. Although market demand is highly influenced by construction output, the market is expected to also be sustained by many of
lighting accounts for nearly 6% of global CO2 emissions, and a global switch to LEDs could save over 1,400 million tons of CO2 and avoid the construction of 1,250 power stations.
Switching to LEDs is an easy win –something as minor as a 20% reduction in energy costs can add the same benefit as a 5% increase in sales for business. Upgrading from conventional lighting to LED technology can deliver significant cost savings of up to 80% for a business. This is according to the Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial
TM66 certified LED luminaires
As a company Ovia has focused its efforts on contributing to the lighting industry’s transition to a circular economy and working towards making sure all of its Inceptor LED luminaires meet the requirements of the TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme. This scheme is an innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) and its aim is to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry.
Having been accepted as founding partners for TM66 last year, Ovia has become more involved in discussions with the LIA on the importance of the circular economy and to highlight the company’s plans to support the TM66 verification scheme. Last year, LIA Chief Executive
Officer Ayca Donaghy, and Head of Policy and Sustainability Bob Bohannon, visited Scolmore Group head office to meet with the Ovia team for discussions on the whole subject of the circular economy and the efforts being made by Ovia to drive its sustainability policies throughout the entire business operation.
Almost the entire range of Ovia’s Inceptor luminaires have now been tested and scored very well on the TM66 Circularity Report. Testing involves the
gathering of thorough evidence to support the specifications of the product range. The LIA verifies the TM66 results to ensure they have a consistent and accurate rating. Ovia will continue with its promise that every one of its Inceptor lighting products will get to the standards set by the TM66 report.
CRACK THE CODE
The circular economy is growing in importance –that is widely recognised. But how can electrical wholesalers get involved? Nigel Harvey, Chief Executive of Recolight, examines the practical steps that can be taken beyond featuring or highlighting low energy or sustainable products.
Probably the fastest growing area in lighting, albeit from a low base, is the remanufacture, or upgrading, of lighting. This typically happens when a customer wants to move from fluorescent fittings to LEDs. Rather than simply remove the fluorescent fittings (to be trashed or recycled) with brand new LED fittings supplied, an increasing number of customers ask for the existing fittings to be upgraded instead.
There are many good reasons for doing this. Firstly, reinstating the same fittings means no further work is needed on the ceiling, with fixing points unchanged. Secondly, there may be cost savings. And thirdly, perhaps most vitally, the embodied carbon emissions are far lower.
For an increasing number of customers, that last point will be the most important. More and more companies are setting Net Zero and carbon emissions reduction targets and reducing the embodied carbon (the carbon emissions involved in making and distributing a product) is an important part of that meeting that target. An increasing number of luminaire manufacturers are now able to provide LED upgrade modules that make the job very straightforward.
Remanufacture code of practice
remanufacture.
It gives confidence to customers that remanufacture and upgrades are undertaken in a consistent and compliant manner. It has been developed over the last two years by a dozen or so individuals drawn from across the lighting industry.
New environmental metrics
Alongside the growth in remanufacturing, there has also been an explosion in the range of environmental and sustainability certifications. It is helpful for wholesalers to understand what they mean – and their limitations.
BS8887:221PROCESS
TM66
This growing sector received a significant boost at the very end of last year, when a new specification was published by BSI. BS8887:221 2024 is the newly released code of practice for luminaire
The TM66 specification is a way in which lighting manufacturers can rapidly assess the extent to which they have adopted circular economy principles in new products. It was developed by a Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) team and produces an aggregate, weighted score on a 0-4 scale to indicate the extent of circularity of a product.
The TM66 specification has undoubtedly encouraged companies to change what they make, and how they make them, to improve their scores, which has resulted in more products incorporating sustainability and circularity. But it has significant limitations. It is very largely restricted to the UK. And although there is a third third-party certification scheme run by the LIA, it can be self-certified.
What’s more, a single digit is limited, given that strengths and weaknesses in a product are averaged out. So, TM66 is probably best seen as an entry level approach to sustainability. It gets the issue on the drawing board, and helps manufacturers demonstrate product circularity. But on its own, it is not enough to provide informed customers with the information they need. It is also unlikely to ever be a legal requirement.
TM65.2
The TM65.2 specification provides lighting manufacturers with a quick way of determining the embodied carbon content of a new product. We can expect to see an increasing number of customers that will
The BSI process recommended for remanufacturing lighting
FLOWCHART
choose products, in part, based on embodied carbon. So, access to a simple assessment methodology helps suppliers respond to such requests. But as with TM66, there are some limitations. In particular, it is largely a UK-centred specification, can be self-certified, and is unlikely to ever be written into UK law.
LCAs
A Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a much more detailed analysis of the total environmental impact of a product. It extends beyond embodied carbon to include whole whole-life carbon (including the carbon emissions when a product is used), and also includes a number of other impacts, including water use, pollution and land use.
An LCA uses data to calculate the footprint of a product based on its intended life cycle. Unlike
TM65, this includes a more comprehensive appraisal of end-of-life processes and their impacts. And vitally, the LCA methodology is internationally recognised.
EPDs
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a way to communicate the results of an LCA in a single document. EPDs are already very widely used internationally –not just in the built environment, but in many other sectors as well. They allow customers to compare the environmental performance of otherwise similar products. Vitally, they also present data in a standardised format allowing incorporation into a whole building LCA or whole project LCA. It seems likely that EPDs will, at some stage, become a mandatory requirement for certain product groups: for the medium term, and in the short term for companies
looking to future proof their ranges, EPDs are likely to be the preferred option.
Summary
Sustainability is here to stay and will become an increasingly important consideration when customers choose products. For wholesalers, keeping abreast of these developments – and vitally working with suppliers that do so as well, is a very tangible way to contribute to the circular economy.

Workwear needs to do more than just protect – it should be comfortable, durable and versatile. From knee protection and PPE to a tailored women’s range, Nick Poulson, UK Country Manager at Carhartt, looks at what wholesalers should consider stocking to stay ahead.
MAKING WORKWEAR WORK
Tough, safe, practical, comfortable; all key words when it comes to workwear. But that’s only part of the picture. There’s another key factor on the workwear agenda too – clothing that looks just as good off site as it does on. For wholesalers, getting the balance right means offering a range that works across the board – men and women, across all seasons and fit for all jobs. That’s where companies like Carhartt deliver, providing electricians with gear built for safety, comfort and a style that works anywhere. For electricians, safety on the job goes beyond protective boots – knees take a beating too. Whether crouching to install wiring, kneeling to access fuse boxes or working on low-mounted control panels, the constant pressure can lead to long term joint damage and discomfort. Without proper knee protection, electricians risk strain injuries that could sideline them from work.
One of the standout items from Carhartt’s latest collection are the Steel Pants, which have secure kneepad pockets that conform to EN14404-4:2024 dimensions. Carhartt now has its own kneepads which can be seamlessly
incorporated into the pant design – not bulky or awkward, these kneepads are made to move around in on the job, helping anyone to stay comfortable when kneeling for any length of time.
Versatile outerwear
Working as an electrical contractor is no office job. It means moving between a variety of environments, indoors, outdoors, and can mean putting up with some uncomfortable weather conditions. Versatile outerwear is therefore really important. The Carhartt Chore Coat is a great addition to every wardrobe. It’s a classic so it looks good and is blanketlined, wind-resistant and water-repellent to keep the wearer warm and protected. It also incorporates Rugged Flex technology
so it doesn’t need to be removed to tackle a job. There’s a women’s version too; it comes in a sturdy fabric with practical and large reinforced pockets so all essentials can stay close at hand.
The number of women in the trades is increasing – and with it the demand for workwear designed specifically for female contractors. Ill-fitting or unisex garments can hinder safety, comfort and productivity so it’s really important that workwear is tailored specifically for women. A women’s range is nothing new for Carhartt – the company first sold coveralls for women back in 1917 – but it has recognised there are more women than ever entering the industry. So representatives met with real women in the field and listened when women said they wanted clothing that is lighter but still tough. The TENCEL Fibre Series has been the result. TENCEL is lightweight, soft, breathable but incredibly durable – more durable even than cotton. Colours have also been carefully chosen – delicate rose, wisteria blue, dusky apple butter and undyed ecru are all choices in the women’s range.
Championing inclusivity
Tailoring is important too – trousers cut specifically for a woman’s shape, jackets with narrower shoulders, overalls with adjustable waists. Carhartt’s range ensures that all contractors, regardless of gender, are equipped to perform their best. Wholesalers have an opportunity to champion inclusivity by stocking a balanced range of men’s and women’s workwear, reflecting the changing face of the industry and positioning the wholesaler as a forward-thinking partner to its trade customers.
No discussion of workwear trends would be complete without addressing the role of personal protective equipment (PPE). Safety glasses, for example, remain a vital piece of kit for electrical contractors, guarding against hazards like flying debris or accidental exposure to electrical arcs.
Carhartt's range of safety glasses conforms to EN166, the European standard that outlines the specifications for protective eyewear. Made with a
polycarbonate lens and frame, these glasses are almost indestructible –polycarbonate is 250 times more impactresistant than glass and 10 times more resistant than standard plastic. Polycarbonate lenses are also thinner and lighter compared to alternative materials.
Seasonal changes
Workwear has two distinct seasons –spring/summer and autumn/winter and it’s important wholesalers stay ahead of these shifts to maximise sales opportunities. Carhartt’s spring/summer collection, launching at the end of January, features lighter weight fabrics and breathable designs tailored for warmer weather. Items such as short-sleeve shirts, lighter jackets and work
shorts are perfect for contractors working in warmer temperatures. By introducing seasonal ranges early, wholesalers can ensure that customers are equipped with the right gear before demand peaks.
Point-of-sale displays can play a key role here, helping contractors easily identify seasonal collections. In-branch merchandising strategies, such as mannequins dressed in full seasonal outfits or racks organised by temperatureappropriate gear, can encourage contractors to upgrade their workwear for the months ahead. Successful wholesaling isn’t just about stocking the right products – it’s also about how those products are presented. Engaging in-branch displays, knowledgeable staff and clear signage can all contribute to a positive shopping experience, making it easy for contractors to find what they need.

As outdoor living spaces become increasingly integral to residential and commercial properties, the demand for durable, functional and stylish electrical accessories has grown. From powering outdoor entertainment areas, office spaces, sheds and hot tubs, to ensuring safety with adequate lighting, selecting the right electrical accessories is critical for both performance and longevity.
As with all electrical installation designs, it is important that the installer takes due account of a range of factors, including, amongst other things, nature of demand, environmental conditions, type of wiring and method of installation. Where equipment is installed outside, there are particular factors to consider including variations in temperature and humidity, ingress of moisture, effects of radiation (direct sunlight) and vibration.
Any equipment selected for installation must be capable of safe operation for the highest and lowest ambient temperature likely to be encountered. In the UK this can range from temperatures as low as15°C up to highs of +40°C. Where there is the presence of water and high humidity careful consideration must be given to the IP rating of the equipment.
The extensive Click Scolmore wiring accessories portfolio includes the Aquip66

RETURN TO NATURE
Active Travel is a growing trend in the UK. It is about connecting people with their communities. Not only does it bring environmental benefits by reducing carbon emissions, but it also supports people’s health and well-being by promoting movement and exercise.
Lighting leads the way
One of the biggest inhibitors to Active Travel at night is the feeling of safety. The Aykley Heads footpath, a nature trail through a wooded area, required a safe level of lighting during hours of darkness to encourage use. The area, rich in nocturnal wildlife, needed lighting to ensure safety without disrupting the local ecosystem. NightTune from Thorn is the latest technology in lighting that meets the needs of the delicate night ecosystem and the safety of people.
A sensitive lighting solution
Durham County Council installed 31 of Thorn Lighting’s Urba NightTune lanterns along the Aykley Heads footpath. These lanterns, approved by the International Dark-Sky Association, offer unique features like colour temperature adjustment, dimming regimes, and precise light control. These features not only minimise environmental impact but also benefit nocturnal ecology with their 2200K warm white light during most of the night.
“ The area, rich in nocturnal wildlife, needed lighting to ensure safety without disrupting the local ecosystem. ”
Thorn Lighting’s Dark Sky-approved Urba lanterns have been selected to enhance the safety and usability of the Aykley Heads footpath, a popular nature trail near the Durham Police Headquarters.
Cllr John Shuttleworth, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for highways, community safety, and rural communities, said: “As a council, one of our priorities is providing safe and accessible Active Travel Routes to encourage people to choose healthier and more environmentally friendly modes of transport. We’re also committed to tackling climate change and protecting the county’s ecology and biodiversity. NightTune has supported both of these ambitions by allowing us to create well-lit areas for walking and cycling in a way that saves energy and respects the nocturnal ecosystem.”
Overcoming challenges
The Aykley Heads footpath project faced several challenges due to its status as a prized area of natural beauty. The lighting needed to be both attractive during the day and efficient at night while being sensitive to the local wildlife. Thorn’s Urba lanterns were chosen as they were able to meet all the specific and stringent lighting requirements for this project.
The luminaires were supplied in RAL 6005 Light Moss Green to match the existing painted columns and blend seamlessly with the surrounding trees and shrubs. The NR (Narrow Road) optics with internal louvres ensured the lighting was focused on the footpaths with minimal overspill.

Oxane’s design is about more than just aesthetics. Circularity was a core principle in the design of this luminaire – starting with the packaging, which entirely plastic-free. Oxane’s 100% recycled aluminium body uses a highly corrosion resistant alloy and all components can be replaced or changed, using a clever and robust tool-free opening system, for simple maintenance and upgrade. No glue is used throughout the manufacturing process, making it easy to manage end of life as well.
Oxane is equipped with high performance LEDs able to still provide up to 98% of their initial output after 100,000 hours of operation, making it an ideal long-term partner to light your way. A wide range of optics are available for highly efficient and comfortable light, exactly where it is needed, whether lighting a residential street, a busy road, a cycle path, or a pedestrian area. With optional Zhaga connectivity, Oxane can be combined with Thorn’s UrbaSens control platform, for an even more tailored lighting solution.
Light pollution and obtrusive light is a global concern, but Oxane responsibly leads the way with < 1% Upward Light Output Ratio, optional internal louvres, a number of CCT options and NightTune compatibility. Thorn’s innovative NightTune technology automatically adjusts lumen output and colour temperature throughout the hours of darkness, balancing human needs whilst minimising ecological impact.

ZUMTOBEL HIGH BAY LUMINAIRE
In industrial environments where explosive gases or dust pose a risk, lighting must meet high safety requirements in two ways. Firstly, luminaires must be robust and certified for use in the Ex Zone. Secondly, they must ensure good visibility with high-quality light, thus enabling safe navigation. Zumtobel is able to fulfil these requirements courtesy of EXDURA, its new high-bay luminaire.
EXDURA was specially developed for extra-large industrial halls with high ceilings, where safety and uniform light distribution play a key role. The high-bay luminaire is optimised for heights of up to 15 metres and, with a high luminous efficacy of up to 41,500 lumens at up to 179 lumens/watt, also illuminates large areas uniformly and efficiently with a colour rendering index of CRI+80.
The ATEX luminaire, therefore, reliably provides naturallooking light in warehouses, production facilities and energy plants. With its high-quality aluminium housing, tempered safety glass cover and excellent heat dissipation, EXDURA is designed for robustness and durability.
The high-bay luminaire’s extreme resilience is reflected in its IK10 impact resistance rating and IP66 protection rating, which ensures high resistance to dust ingress and even powerful water jets. Extreme ambient temperatures from -40°C to 70°C are no problem and even after 100,000 operating hours, the high-bay luminaire can still deliver 80% of its light output. With its higher protection level, EXDURA complements the EXTONA damp-proof luminaire, which is also explosion-proof.
As an all-rounder for harsh environments with up to four luminaire modules, different light distributions, and lumen packages, EXDURA can be tailored to the specific needs of the industrial operation. The optional bracket for mounting on the ceiling or on a wall provides additional flexibility. This extra feature allows EXDURA to be swivelled by up to 180˚ in 30˚ increments.

ELEX 2025
Sebastian Gann, Sustainability Director at the Zumtobel Group, shares how the company is advancing its sustainability journey, guided by the Science Based Targets initiative, a commitment to achieving Net Zero, alongside its goals to establish a Circular Economy and being a Partner of Choice. Here he focuses on Net Zero and more specifically the actions taking place in the Group’s Spennymoor factory.
At the Zumtobel Group, we firmly believe that sustainability is not just a business strategy –it’s a responsibility. As a global leader in the lighting industry, we recognise the vital role we play in shaping a more sustainable future. In 2023, we took a significant step forward by joining the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aligning our goals with the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warmingto 1.5˚C.
The SBTi commitment is a game-changer. It pushes us to not only address our own emissions but also take responsibility for upstream and downstream impacts along our entire value chain. This means working collaboratively with partners, suppliers and customers to drive meaningful change. Achieving Net Zero emissions is an ambitious goal, but we are confident that with determination, innovation and collaboration it’s possible.
Our path to Net Zero
Our journey toward Net Zero begins with rigorous planning and action. For example, our Spennymoor factory, the UK hub for Thorn Lighting, has certified environmental and energy management
“ Achieving Net Zero emissions is an ambitious goal, but we are confident that with determination, innovation and collaboration it’s possible.”
systems (ISO 14001 and ISO 50001) that provide the framework for compliance, continuous improvement and performance tracking.
Since 2021, at the Spennymoor site, we’ve reduced our Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ by 25%. Previous to this we converted the Spennymoor site to 100% green energy. Key projects include reducing energy consumption by 1.3 million kWh between FY21/22 and FY22/23, implementing advanced systems to optimise resource usage, and targeting a 15% reduction in gas consumption through upgrades to the factory’s paint plant.
Recognition for leadership
The achievements at Spennymoor were recently recognised at The Manufacturer MX Awards 2024, where Thorn Lighting won the Sustainable Manufacturing Award. The judges highlighted the factory’s exceptional ability to integrate sustainability into daily operations, praising the team’s enthusiasm and dedication.
As one judge commented: “It was a pleasure to visit Thorn Lighting and witness the impressive strides they are making to embed sustainability throughout their operations. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the teams during our visit highlighted a business-wide commitment to sustainability, where innovative ideas
are celebrated and actively contribute to their success. Thorn Lighting exemplifies how strong leadership for sustainability and effective project management can deliver tangible actions and measurable results.”
This recognition reflects not only the hard work of the Spennymoor team but also the strength of our vision at the Zumtobel Group. It serves as validation that our efforts are making an impact and inspiring us to push further.
Collaboration beyond boundaries
While addressing our direct emissions is critical, we know that the real challenge lies in tackling Scope 3 emissions, which account for the majority of our environmental footprint. These include emissions from materials sourcing, logistics and the use of our products.
The SBTi framework encourages us
“ Together, we can create a ripple effect that drives sustainable innovation across industries.”
to work closely with our supply chain to reduce these impacts. It’s a collective effort, and we’re committed to bringing our partners and customers on this journey with us. Together, we can create a ripple effect that drives sustainable innovation across industries.
Building momentum for the future
Looking ahead, for our Spennymoor location, we remain steadfast in our commitment to continuous improvement. Planned projects include a 900,000kWh gas reduction through our paint plant 2 efficiency upgrade,
including improved oven insulation, oven size reduction and installation of energy efficient gas burner, and implementing advanced waste management systems to cut hazardous waste by 90%. These initiatives, alongside our broader sustainability roadmap, ensure we are constantly evolving and staying ahead of environmental challenges.
By joining the SBTi, we’ve set ourselves a clear and measurable path to achieving Net Zero emissions. This commitment holds us accountable, drives collaboration and reinforces our belief that businesses have a vital role in addressing the climate crisis. At the Zumtobel Group, we’re proud to lead by example and demonstrate that sustainability is not just an aspiration –it’s a responsibility we’re delivering on every day.
