THINKING CLEARLY

W

ell, that’s a wrap then. The end of another year in the construction plant industry, and one that seems to have been a success in terms of progress made on a number of fronts. Certainly, judging by what’s come across our desks and covered in CPN over the last 12 months, there appears to be lots of clarity as to where equipment is heading vis a vis how machines will be powered going forward, the adoption of technology for greater efficiencies and the focus on safer working. Unlike the on-highway market, where debate about the practicalities of electric, battery and other power sources still rages, machine equipment manufacturers have delineated what works where and delivered a growing number of electric models that work just as well as their diesel counterparts. Okay so there might be a more rigorous focus on charging/work patterns but for the most part you can get a full day’s work out of an excavator without having to worry about running out of juice. All the major machine brands are heavily invested in electric as the future where it is practical and numerous tests, studies and anecdotal evidence would support that this is the way to go. Fuel cells and hydrogen seem destined to be the driving force for larger machines and it will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming years. One obviously can’t ignore JCB here, as the company is really pioneering hydrogen as a costeffective alternative to diesel, especially with the huge carry over of components from traditional ICEs. Machine control is another area that is worthy of mention.Yes, it has been around for some time, think graders and dozers, but adoption on machines like excavators has been slower but is now gaining traction. Technology specialist Topcon believes that the adoption rate in Europe is only about 10% so plenty of growth ahead, particularly if 30% increases in productivity are on offer like the company claims. CPN has run several stories this year where operators have employed machine control to great effect, citing the cherished triumvirate of lower costs, greater efficiencies and increased profitability. Technology has also had a beneficial effect on site safety. While manual protocols have always figured in safe site and machine operation, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has taken it to a new level. The ability to differentiate humans from objects, to see the unseen, to constantly scan the perimeter of the machine’s working range for any potential danger, are wholly welcome and are key to reducing, or better, eradicating life-threatening events. It will be interesting to watch what happens with the above in 2024, and rest assured, we will do our best to keep you abreast of all the developments, so keep reading! Finally, with the festive season upon us, it just remains for the CPN team to wish you all a Happy Christmas and see you next year!

DUMPING ENQUIRY LAUNCHED

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT MAKER JCB HAS WELCOMED NEWS THAT GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATIONS ARE UNDER WAY INTO ALLEGED DUMPING OF SUBSIDISED CHINESE EXCAVATORS ON THE UK MARKET. IN RECENT YEARS, CHINESE MANUFACTURERS, WHO ARE HEAVILY SUBSIDISED BY THE STATE, HAVE INCREASINGLY TARGETED THE UK MARKET WITH CUT-PRICE EXCAVATORS. Now, following complaints, the UK Trade Remedies Authority (the TRA) has launched anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into imports from China of tracked excavators of at least 11 tonnes into the UK. JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald said: “We welcome these investigations by the Trade Remedies Authority. There is clear evidence of unfair competitive practices in relation to aggressive, and subsidised, pricing of tracked excavators imported from China. “We want to see a swift and clear resolution to this urgent matter so that a competitive level playing field is restored for all UK-based manufacturers who invest heavily in the development of world leading products.”

n SMT GB technician refuels a Volvo ECR235E excavator with HVO fuel. “Once our time using red diesel came to an end, we assessed all of the available fuelling options, and made the conscious business decision to switch to HVO fuel,” explains operations director Garry Wilcock. “This led us to invest significantly in our facilities to accommodate this new fuel, which we wholeheartedly believe has been worthwhile when the environmental benefits of using HVO fuel are considered.”

Hydrotreated vegetable oil, or HVO, is a diesellike fuel that differs from standard diesel in that it is not made from petroleum oil, but waste and by-products of the global food industry, such as used cooking oil. Not only does HVO convert food industry waste into a useful generator of resources, but it is also both a renewable and sustainable fuel.

Garry Wilcock, Operations Director at SMT GB.

10 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER I CPN

The sustainability of SMT GB’s HVO fuel is assured through the certificates provided by Zemo under the Renewable Fuel Assurance Scheme, which guarantees that it has been made from waste products and not blended with any other fuels. But the benefits of HVO fuel extend far beyond reducing waste. Explaining the main benefit of HVO fuel to SMT GB, quality, environmental, safety and health manager Paul Burr says: “There is around a 90% reduction in total scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions from using HVO fuel over diesel, so it was an obvious decision for us to take when we looked at it from an environmental perspective. Added to this, it reduces emissions of some of the key air pollutants by around 30%, which is helping authorities in their efforts to meet local and national air quality standards.” Paul adds: “SMT GB is committed to achieving net zero by 2040, which is a highly ambitious target, but using HVO fuel is greatly helping us along the road to achieving it. It also assists our customers in their own journeys to net zero.”

Paul Burr, Quality, Environment, Safety and Health Manager at SMT GB.

Providing reassurance that HVO is safe to use, Volvo CE has tested the fuel across its entire engine range, and found it to cause no damage to engines or components and, in some instances, actually increase fuel efficiency. To allay concerns even further, SMT GB only engages with fuel suppliers who are able to prove the point of origin of the waste and byproducts used to create their HVO. This ensures that the HVO fuel supplied to SMT GB is fully certified and truly created from ethical and sustainable sources. Commenting on the adoption of HVO fuel, service delivery manager Derek Griffiths adds: “Like everybody, we were initially wary of the change. However, after Volvo’s reassurance and completing our own due diligence, I’m happy to confirm that there have been no issues to report.” He goes on: “The feedback from our customers and engineers on our use of HVO

fuel has been nothing but positive and, from our perspective, we believe HVO is the perfect environmental bridging tool until electrification and hydrogen are ready to take over from dieselpowered engines.” In addition to exclusively using HVO to fuel any customer machines that visit SMT GB’s customer support centres, the company also uses HVO for all new machine deliveries, and to fuel the entire forklift truck fleet. Concluding, Garry finishes: “There is certainly a larger cost involved in using HVO over white diesel, but its adoption as our fuel of choice perfectly complements all of our other environmental initiatives, and we at SMT GB strongly feel that we have an ethical responsibility to do our part to minimise our impact on the environment.”

SHOW CASE Case’s latest machine demonstration had something for everyone, including the environment. CPN reports.

C

ase Construction Equipment completed its 2023 European roadshow with a two-day, sustainability-certified event, in Derbyshire. The company welcomed UK and Northern European dealers, the construction media and more than 200 customers to the final leg of this year’s roadshow, following well-received events in Germany, Italy and France throughout the Summer. CNH Industrial, through its Case Construction Equipment brand and in line with its sustainable development engagement policy, had committed to achieving a sustainable event, as a pilot project for its ISO 20121 certification. ISO 20121 is an international standard for organisations that want to demonstrate

commitment to sustainability in the planning and implementation of events. All environmental, social and economic aspects of the event were analysed and acted upon to minimise their impact. This included land conservation, waste management, containment of emissions, sustainable procurement and improvement of the social and economic impact on the communities involved. “ISO 20121 provides for performance monitoring, always with reference to the principles and policies adopted by the organisation,” explains Daniela Ropolo, head of sustainable development initiatives, CNH Industrial. “It allows us to correctly identify and manage the lessons learned from the event, in order to use them in the planning

for subsequent activities.”

Green machines This focus on the environment was extended to the equipment on display, with customers able to trial two all-electric mini excavators and a prototype electric compact wheel loader. The loader, called the 12EV, uses a powerful 23kWh battery pack to drive the transmission and hydraulics, delivering up to six hours of continual use on a single battery charge. It will be launched to customers across Europe by the end of the year. Case now offers two electric mini excavators. The CX15EV was launched earlier this year and the 2.5-tonne CX25EV will be available in the coming months. In

CPN I NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 13

C P N AT L A R G E both cases, the mini excavators are capable of operating for a working shift between battery charges, with as much, if not more power and performance than conventional diesel-powered model. The company has also expanded its range of diesel models. With the launch of the DSeries mini excavator line, the company has increased the number of models from seven to 20 machines, between 1-6 tonnes operating weight. This includes a zero tailswing option for every weight sector and four mini excavators with a two-piece articulating (TAB) main boom. It now offers a mini excavator to suit every application, in every market sector, across every territory. The company also presented its new CX75E, a 7.5-tonne midi excavator with a two-piece articulating boom (TAB). Offered alongside the 7-tonne monoboom-equipped CX70E, the CX75E allows Case to provide complete coverage of all sectors of the midi excavator market across Europe.

Machines galore Customers had the opportunity to try a range of E-Series crawler excavators and recently launched E-Series wheeled excavator line. With four models, the wheeled excavator range includes two conventional tail swing and two reduced tail swing machines, with operating weights of 14-17 tonnes. The equipment on display also included compact and full-size wheel loaders, along with a first opportunity for many to see the latest C-Series grader, complete with electro-hydraulic controls. Developed for small job sites in a wide variety of applications, from landscaping to grounds maintenance, agriculture to construction, the prototype TL100 mini

track loader attracted attention and appreciation at the event. The compact machine offers a combination of manoeuvrability and power and few visitors could resist the opportunity to put the machine to the test. Case had stations explaining its range of connectivity services, demonstrating how telematic systems such as SiteWatch can save money and reduce unexpected downtime on site. The company was also supported at the event by suppliers Geith and Sampierana, providing customers with advice and information concerning buckets, attachments, tracks and a range of other components. The roadshow provided visitors with the ability to try their hand at the famous Case Rodeo operator challenge. Using a CX25D mini excavator, with a scoop attached to the

bucket, operators had to pick up golf balls and deposit them inside waiting road cones, spaced around the machine. This had to be carried out against the clock, combining speed and accuracy, with fingertip control of the machine. “With so many new and improved machines on display, the roadshow provided an incredible opportunity for our customers and our dealers to meet and to try the very latest equipment. They were also able to catch a glimpse of the future, with our growing electric line-up,” said Ivona Nicol, marketing manager for Northern Europe. “More than that, the Roadshow provided Case and CNH Industrial with an exciting opportunity to create our first certified ISO 20121 sustainable event. We were able to assess and refine every aspect of the creation and implementation of the roadshow and we have been delighted with the results and with the feedback from everyone who attended.”

AS GOOD AS NEW

Before

F

CC Environment owns and operates over 200 recycling, treatment, and disposal facilities across the UK, managing more than 8.5 million tonnes of waste for their customers, which include some 72 local authorities across North Yorkshire, Suffolk and Essex. Landfill sites are harsh environments with typically rough and contaminated land surfaces. Machines operating in these conditions therefore must be extremely hardy and robust. So, imagine the state of the machine when it rolled into the Finning service workshop after 15 years of unforgiving hard work. FCC’s current waste processing fleet alone comprises 500 machines including landfill compactors, wheeled excavators, track type loaders and articulated dump trucks, with Cat equipment making up almost half. It bought the Cat 836 landfill compactor from Finning in 2007 with a full repair and maintenance programme, which kept the machine operational with a minimal amount of downtime. The transmission on the machine failed at the end of 2022. Working in collaboration with FCC Group plant manager, Bill Stone, the Finning team was able to consider the best solution that would meet FCCs needs and included looking at buying a brand-new replacement machine, or have the existing machine completely refurbished to the highest specification available with a Cat certified

16 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER I CPN

A team of specialist rebuild engineers at Finning UK & Ireland have taken just 12 weeks to completely transform a 15-year-old Cat landfill compactor for FCC Environment – rebuilding it with a mix of reconditioned and remanufactured parts so it is fit for a second life. CPN finds out more. machine rebuild. “As a company operating in the waste and recycling sector, we understand how important it is to embrace sustainable approaches across all aspects of our business and have transformed our operations accordingly to limit our company-wide environmental impact. “While sustainability played a big role in our decision, we also needed to weigh up the

time it would take and how much it would cost. The lead time for a replacement machine, for example, was longer than the estimated three month rebuild turnaround. Crucially it was Finning providing reassurance on the quality and performance of the machine that was the tipping point, so we commissioned them to carry out the rebuild.”

Dedicated team Each rebuild project has a dedicated team of engineers. This one was led by Ben Marston with Thomas Raybould who worked with other engineers throughout the 12 weeks on every aspect of the machine rebuild. The first task that the engineers undertook was to fully disassemble the machine piece by piece. This involved draining off the oils and fluids from all major components, disconnecting them, and removing the axles so the engine, torque convertor and pumps could be taken out in one go. Then the transmission, fuel tank and steering cylinders were removed ready for

After

the engineers to wash down and carry out a detailed inspection of the machine and cab to identify the full scope of work required to get the machine back to as new condition. “This was easily one of the most challenging rebuilds I’ve been involved in.” explained Ben Marston. “The harsh environment that the machine has been operating in has taken its toll on every part of the machine. The transmission was the worst I’ve ever come across, and the cab was falling to pieces when it came in. “A key part of the inspection process involves identifying which parts can be reconditioned and reused. In this case we were able to restore and reuse seven of the ten radiator cores. The reassembly phase can take up to nine weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the machine and reconditioning required – and this is where the technical expertise of the engineers really comes into its own. A key part of the rebuild process involves

D E M O L I T I O N , WA S T E & R E C Y C L I N G management decisions, especially for those operating in the waste and recycling sector. “Customer communication is key throughout a rebuild project, and we take a lot of care to ensure we keep the customer informed of progress on a regular basis. This includes a weekly video walk round the machine so the engineers can explain in detail what elements have been worked on and have the opportunity to flag any specific issues. “During a rebuild, we aim to recover and recycle over 65% of the original machine. In addition, customers choosing a rebuild typically save around 40-50% on the cost compared with buying a new machine. While remanufactured parts, of which there are around 8000+ Cat certified parts available, can be up to 60% less than the cost of a brand new one.”

Aftermarket support upgrading components or systems within the machine to the latest technical update that would have been introduced during the machine’s production life. This machine had a mix of remanufactured and reconditioned components. Once the major elements were refitted and the cab reinstalled, all the electrical elements were reconnected, and the oil and coolant topped up, so the machine was ready to be restarted. The performance testing is perhaps the most critical phase of a rebuild and where all components are assessed to ensure they are within Caterpillar’s approved specifications. This includes the first full run of the machine which includes bleeding all the systems and testing the electrics. Then the engine, transmission and hydraulic systems are given a

thorough work out by performing pressure checks and critical electronic calibrations. Once the panel work is reinstalled, the fire suppression and reverse camera systems are fitted – a mandatory safety requirement for machines working in landfill environments. Adam Walker, engine and drivetrain product manager at Finning oversaw the project. He said: “Sustainability is driving a lot of fleet

The rebuilt machine has now been back and operational on site for around three months. Bill Stone said: “Our mobile plant fleet is key to our operation, so it is essential these assets are managed effectively, and Finning plays a vital part in that. The strong aftermarket support we’ve received over the years provided reassurance and confidence in deciding to have this machine rebuilt. “The process did evolve from the original scope. This was due to many of the components of the machine only being exposed and their true condition seen once the machine was taken apart in the workshop. The finished machine sounds and looks fantastic and is a testament to the skills but also the pride of all those involved. “Doing the right thing is vital, and choosing the sustainable option makes good business sense, and a route we will continue with as part of our fleet succession plan. “We’ve been impressed with all aspects of this machine rebuild both in terms of the skill of the engineers, the level of communication throughout the process and in the quality and performance of the machine. We’re already in discussions with the team at Finning about commissioning another rebuild in the next few months.”

NEW DIMENSION FOR SAFER WORKING

Plant hire companies are championing 3D avoidance for greater construction safety. CPN hears from two companies who are making it happen.

I

n the ever-evolving landscape of British construction, Plantforce Rentals has emerged as the latest company to embrace the cutting-edge technology offered by Leica Geosystems (part of Hexagon) and Xwatch Safety Solutions 3D avoidance zone solution. With its new Kobelco SK130 already receiving the upgrade, it’s evident that the winds of change are indeed blowing. Plantforce digital lead, Matt Milkins, remarked that this is nothing short of “breakthrough technology”. Echoing this sentiment, Neil Patton, business development manager at Plantforce Rentals North West, called it a “fantastic system”. While Plantforce is the latest to come on board, Lynch Plant Hire has not been far behind. It has already given the nod to the 3D system, having four units upgraded last month with more on order. Previously, it was Flannery Plant Hire that blazed the trail, pioneering the system earlier this year, having completed testing in ‘real world’ applications onsite with tier one contractor Kier Group over a number of months. “We at Xwatch are genuinely delighted with how swiftly and positively the industry has

20 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER I CPN

embraced this groundbreaking technology. Our gratitude goes out to Flannery and Kier for their invaluable support and collaboration in trialling this product. By connecting an XW5, a height slew and RCI (rated capacity indicator) system, to the Leica MC1 machine control software, we’ve integrated a virtual wall which offers height, slew, and depth control, facilitating the recognition of cables and utilities. This enables the operator to proficiently navigate

around the avoidance zones on any construction site,” explains Xwatch sales and operations director, Dan Leaney. “This breakthrough, from our alliance with Leica Geosystems and our own endeavours at Xwatch, has transformed the excavator safety market. Beyond safety enhancements, we’ve seen significant strides in site productivity and control. This system bridges the gap between safety and machine control for excavators.”

020_CPN_DEC23_Layout 1 27/11/2023 12:13 Page 21

Chris Matthew, head of business strategy, Flannery added: "Having created avoidance zones and put the technology through its paces, it’s clear that it will enhance our safe operation onsite and support our operator community. This will, in-turn, allow operators to concentrate on the work they are tasked with completing. “Because it’s integrated into the Leica MC1 tablet, which is already in the machine, we don’t have to add another screen into the operator station. And as we already train our operators on how to use the Leica Geosystems machine control, they are already familiar with the system, so this is just an addon that is already proving to be very popular. “The feedback that I’ve had from the operators is that they feel like they have an extra safeguard in the cab that enables them to see things they wouldn’t have otherwise seen, like underground utilities. And this gives them the confidence to continue work, which is really important.”

Unseen hazards Historically, the construction industry has grappled with a myriad of hazards, many of which remain concealed, particularly when employing plant machinery on site. The UK’s subterranean network is staggering, with over four million kilometres of pipes and cables crisscrossing beneath our feet. Accessing data about their precise locations can be a mammoth task, leading to approximately

“The technology will enhance our safe operation onsite and support our operator community.” 60,000 inadvertent strikes annually. Such mishaps not only jeopardise the safety of personnel and machinery but also introduce costly delays, with the increasing financial impact on the UK economy being a whopping £2.4 billion each year. In response to these challenges, Leica Geosystems, Xwatch Safety Solutions, and Flannery Plant Hire have teamed up to create an effective on-site solution. They aim to reduce the risks associated with the People Plant Interface (PPI), a known major hazard in the construction world. This is the first time these companies have combined their expertise to develop a practical system specifically designed for modern construction environments. With the innovative 3D avoidance solution in place, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a guarantee. Engineers can pre-map potential hazards, thereby easing the burden on operators. Some examples of these potential hazards include:

Height restrictions: should an excavator threaten to collide with overhead obstructions, such as power lines or gantries, immediate zones of avoidance can be established via cabin controls. Activating this system can regulate or even halt the excavator’s hydraulic functions. ● Zone restrictions: to preclude breaches, like environmental or drainage trench disruptions, the excavator’s tracks can be rendered immobile. If it’s quantifiable, it’s avoidable. ● Underground restrictions: tapping into the National Underground Asset Register, the system facilitates controlled and safe excavation around utilities such as power, gas, and water. Dig depth can be limited, safeguarding subterranean assets and ensuring secure excavation practices. If it’s mappable, it’s avoidable. ● Highway restrictions: when operating on bustling highways or public thoroughfares, geospatially defined zones of avoidance or ‘virtual walls’ can be established. Not only does this prevent excavators from encroaching forbidden territories, but also eliminates the need for system resets during forward movement, thereby nullifying potential human errors. Leaney adds: “Though the 3D avoidance solution is innovative and can greatly enhance safety, it still requires correct input and proper use by the machine operator to ensure its full potential is realised. It’s paramount that it’s programmed and implemented with precision. With the right input from the machine operator, safety becomes more than just a priority — it’s assured. By allowing engineers to pre-map potential hazards, we’re not only providing an advanced tool but also aiming to ease the burden on our operators.” As UK construction marches into the future, the combined efforts of Leica Geosystems, Xwatch Safety Solutions, and of course, Flannery Plant Hire for pioneering the trials of this system, are ensuring that it’s not just about construction, but construction safely.

Breaking New Ground Buckingham Plant Hire revs up safety with innovative testing tech

B

uckingham Plant Hire is the latest plant operator to bolster its safety measures and equipment maintenance by investing in the Bowmonk brake test equipment. In an industry where safety is paramount, the move represents a proactive approach to ensuring that all plant machinery is operating at peak safety standards. Dominic Gibbons, HSEQ advisor at Buckingham Plant Hire, says the equipment’s reputation among other plant operators persuaded the company to re-think its testing systems. “We decided to invest in the Bowmonk brake testing system as an affordable, recognizable brand within our industry,” he said. Their choice to transition from a different brand to Bowmonk in 2023 reflects a strategic investment in a product known for its reliability and effectiveness in the field.

Positive feedback The firm is in good company. Among the many long-term users of this kit are Aggregate Industries and The Banks Group. The feedback from the field has been overwhelmingly positive. The engineers performing brake tests have been particularly impressed with the simplicity of the system.

26 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER I CPN

“They like its simple to use features and the ability to get printable results instantly,” Gibbons explained. This immediate access to results is a key factor in reducing machinery downtime, as it streamlines the testing process. Training is a crucial component of integrating new technology, and Buckingham Plant Hire’s staff received direct instruction from Bowmonk representatives. “Training was delivered by Bowmonk staff which made this more personal, giving us confidence in the product being trained on,” Gibbons noted, underlining the clear and informative nature of the sessions. The Bowmonk BrakeCheck-4-Quarries is designed with non-road mobile machinery in mind, including equipment often found in quarries and plants. Its portability and ease of use make it ideal for a variety of settings, from

FLEET ADDITIONS

DEVELON ASH GROUP Fuel savings and improved safety

HYUNDAI CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT HUGH PEARL LAND DRAINAGE Hugh Pearl Land Drainage has recently upgraded its fleet, replacing older Hyundai 140LC

persuaded ASH Group to buy two Develon DL420CVT-7 wheel loaders for its aggregates wash plant in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. “We are very impressed with the fuel economy and high performance of the new Develon wheel loaders and our drivers really like to work with them,” said John Dennan. Compared to the machines they have replaced, the new wheel loaders are using 4 l/h less fuel (11 l/h instead of 15 l/h) mainly due to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) on the DL420CVT-7. This system allows the DL420CVT-7 to automatically transition from hydrostatic power at low speed to the mechanical system to operate at higher speeds. The complete driving range, forwards and in reverse, is controlled by the CVT system. Low engine speeds ensure a high efficiency and the highest driving comfort irrespective of the traction speed. The power splitting continuously variable technology not only facilitates moving off softly and hydraulically but makes fuel savings of up to 25% possible. The DL420CVT-7 is also the first in the UK to be equipped with Develon’s Transparent Bucket safety system. This innovative feature allows the wheel loader driver to see through blind spots in front of the bucket using a monitor in the cab. The innovative Transparent Bucket system records images in front of the wheel loader with top and bottom frontloaded cameras and shows combined images on the cab monitor in real time using a curved projection method. Another advantage of the Transparent Bucket system is that it can significantly improve work efficiency by providing a forward-view perspective for the driver during loading/unloading or when carrying materials such as aggregates, sand and soil. The wheel loaders were supplied by Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd (Blue Central), based in Northwich in Cheshire, the authorised Develon Dealer for NorthWest England and North Wales.

crawler excavators with the new Hyundai A series model, the HX140AL. Over the last 12 months, two HX140AL excavators have been delivered and are now employed in various projects, ranging from path digging and pond drainage to larger-scale civil works such as car parks, cemeteries, and sports fields. “Having relied on Hyundai machines for years, we’ve found them to be of great quality and value. So, upgrading to the next generation, the HX140AL, was a natural step for us,” explained Adrian Rowell, Contracts Director at Hugh Pearl. The new excavators have impressed the team with their enhanced comfort and increased power. “Our operators only have good things to say about them. The cameras, in particular, have had a really positive response. They make our guys feel more confident when they’re working on a busy and complex site,” Rowell said. The HX140AL, supplied by Hyundai Construction Equipment dealer Ernest Doe, features a robust exterior, advanced safety features, and improved serviceability, making it suitable for demanding construction sites and infrastructure projects. Its upgraded engine and control technologies aim to elevate productivity, with features like the EPIC hydraulic system, automatic engine shutdown, and lifting mode enhancing performance and efficiency. CASE CIVILS & CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS A strong surge in demand has led Civils & Construction Solutions, a Wigan-based specialist in civil engineering and groundworks, to order four CASE CX130E crawler excavators from dealer Dennis Barnfield in a deal at the UK CASE Roadshow event in Derbyshire. Construction director Neil Barnes said: “We are having to hire in a lot of machines at present. We aim to own 80% and hire 20%, but we’re way off that at the moment. We are one of the busiest civils companies in the North-West right now.” Civils & Construction Solutions operates a diverse fleet of 25 machines, ranging from 1.5-tonne to 35-tonne excavators, complemented by a road haulage fleet and various smaller equipment. Over the past 12 years, the company has invested over £1.5 million with CASE dealer Dennis Barnfield. The company’s history with CASE goes back to 2018 when it bought two CASE CX145D short radius excavators in 2018. Impressed with the performance, it expanded its CASE fleet to include models up to the 35-tonne CASE CX350D and were the first in the UK to order a 9-tonne CASE CX90D Midi excavator. Now, the company is advancing with the purchase of its first CASE E-Series excavators, the four new CASE CX130Es. The CASE CX130E, the smallest of the E-Series models, boasts many features of larger excavators. It is powered by an EU Stage V engine from FPT, with enhanced operator comfort and ease of use. “The cab on the E-Series machines is more roomy for our operators, with a better and larger ccontrol panel screen, but they’ve always been a top-notch machine," Barnes remarked.

JCB DAWSONGROUP EMC The biggest fleet of JCB Pothole Pros – a machine that fixes potholes in eight minutes flat – is set to hit the road in the UK after one of the country’s leading hirers placed a massive order for 50 machines. Commercial asset supplier Dawsongroup EMC has already bought 11 JCB Pothole Pros – but all are now out on long-term hire with councils up and down the country, with more urgently needed. “We only bought our first JCB Pothole Pro under a year ago and the response has been staggering, with the whole of the current fleet now out on hire,” said managing director Glen Carruthers. “We have placed this additional order simply to keep up with demand.” Demand for the machines is huge, especially given the Asphalt Industry Alliance’s (AIA) Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance survey estimating that there are a record £14 billion worth of outstanding road repairs in England and Wales – or a nine-year backlog. Tests show the JCB Pothole Pro can complete a pothole repair in less than eight minutes, four times quicker than standard methods and equivalent to 700 potholes per month. With a 40km/h travel speed, the machine can also rapidly relocate between sites without additional transport costs. The JCB Pothole Pro is a three-in-one machine, cutting out the damaged surface, cropping the edges and cleaning the hole, ensuring a permanent fix. Dawsongroup EMC is JCB’s official rental partner for the Pothole Pro and the additional machines will be supplied through dealer TC Harrison JCB. JCB Municipalities General Manager Ben Rawding said: “It’s great to see the success that Dawsongroup is enjoying with the Pothole Pro. More and more local authorities, and the contractors working on their behalf, are recognising that the Pothole Pro is the best way to fix Britain’s roads quickly and permanently, first time. “It is now easier than ever for UK authorities to get a JCB Pothole Pro on to their network, whether it’s in a city or in a rural county and the public will now really start to see their presence on the roads and streets around the UK.” . TECHNOLOGY CORNER

LIFE SAVER ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS TRANSFORMING THE SAFETY AND PRODUCTIVITY OF PLANT IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR. CPN TALKS TO JONATHAN GUEST, CEO OF SAFETY SHIELD GROUP, ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTION THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY CAN MAKE IN SAVING LIVES.

J

onathan Guest, ceo of Safety Shield Group, has been a pivotal figure in advancing construction safety through innovative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. With more than two decades of experience in the construction and plant industry, Guest’s commitment to improving safety measures intensified following a tragic incident where a friend was crushed to death by an excavator. As Guest puts it: “Despite physical barriers, use of PPE, clarity around responsibilities, and measures for safe vehicle circulation, the people/plant interface still poses a major risk for construction workers.” The incident led Guest to set up Safety Shield with a clear mission: to harness cuttingedge technology to reduce the risk of fatal and

30 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER I CPN

serious injuries on construction sites. Safety Shield’s ground-breaking work has led to the development of an AI-driven collision avoidance system specifically tailored for the chaotic and unpredictable environment of construction sites.

AI solution The system, which has been meticulously refined through a decade of research and development, employs camera-based technology to discern human forms amidst the cluttered landscape of construction sites. This AI solution has been trained to discern people from objects, providing crucial real-time alerts to machine operators to prevent collisions. “The challenge was to create an AI that could reliably identify a person in the complex

visual field of a construction site,” explains Guest. “It needed to recognize a human form in all conditions, whether they’re crouching, partially obscured, or emerging from unexpected places.” The final AI system is used in combination with HD cameras, which are strategically positioned on plant. Different visual and audible alerts go off in the cab if a person enters the machine’s yellow (outer) zone or red (inner) zone, at which point a collision is imminent. These human detection zones can be specifically configured for each machine; for example, a bulldozer might require different zones to a telehandler depending on the type of work being carried out. The reliability of the technology has been confirmed through six ISO certifications and accuracy measures of 99.5% by independent testing bodies. To add an extra level of safety, a digital version of the established ‘thumbs up’ safety

030_CPN_DEC23_Layout 1 27/11/2023 12:20 Page 31

procedure can be added to the Safety Shield system. When a pedestrian wants to approach a machine, they give a thumbs-up gesture to the operator from a safe distance. The operator then presses an in-cab digital thumbs-up button, disabling the machine, changing the exterior LED sign from red (no entry) to green (thumbs up), and triggering an audible acceptance message. This leaves the pedestrian in no doubt that they have been seen and can approach the plant safely.

Automatic braking The most recent innovation to Safety Shield’s suite is the autonomous braking feature, which involves the plant’s CAN Bus system communicating with the AI human form recognition technology. If a person enters a machine’s human detection zone and the operator fails to respond, the machine will brake automatically. Crucially, this braking is intelligent, factoring in the plant’s direction of travel, whether it is loaded, its speed, and whether the operator has already started to brake.Guest is not only focused on immediate safety outcomes but also on the long-term benefits of AI in construction. Safety Shield Vue, the system’s data reporting portal, offers a cloud-based platform for real-time monitoring, video recording, and data analytics. This comprehensive overview allows site managers to identify patterns and implement changes to enhance safety and operational efficiency. The data platform is proving a particularly powerful tool for encouraging long-term behaviour change and increasing productivity. Analysing safety information enables site

managers to identify trends and specific issues. On some construction sites, data about incidents has prompted toolbox talks to tackle specific issues, raise awareness and change behaviour. In other cases, video footage has prompted changes to the site layout to improve both safety and efficiency.

Accident free Reflecting on the transformative impact of AI, Guest is optimistic: “Our AI systems have been installed on over 5,000 pieces of equipment across the UK, with a notable absence of people-plant interface accidents. Furthermore, there’s been a 65% reduction in red zone incursions in the last year alone,” he reports. As AI continues to make inroads into the construction industry, Safety Shield’s technology is at the forefront, not just in preventing accidents but also in fostering a culture of safety and efficiency that will benefit the sector for years to come. The Construction Industry Training Board’s initiative to equip all its machinery with AI collision avoidance systems is a testament to the growing recognition of the value of these innovations. Guest concludes, “AI isn’t just a theoretical concept; it’s a practical tool that’s reshaping our industry, guiding us towards a future where construction sites are significantly safer and more productive.”
