‘EMISSION’ STATEMENT

This year will see an expansion of the ULEZ initiative to every one of the capital’s boroughs, and if you believe that’s just a London thing then think again. A similar scheme is inevitably coming to a town or city near you, with some of our biggest urban centres already subject to charges – and more still to come.

For the uninitiated, the Ultra Low Emission Zone is an area where a daily fee applies to vehicles that are deemed to be too polluting. All Euro 6 diesel vans and, of course, electric vehicles are exempt from the London ULEZ charge. In practice, that means that diesels older than 2015 will be subject to a £12.50 tariff, and failure to pay results in a fine.

Whilst no-one would disagree that aspiring to improved air quality is a worthy ambition, the expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone has become a very big stick with precious little carrot currently on offer. For any small builder their van will be the biggest single investment they make in their business. Upgrading their existing four-wheeled workhorse with a cleaner, greener machine will not be done lightly, but a more generous commercial vehicle scrappage scheme would go some way to mitigate the financial implications.

Transport for London (TfL) has allocated £110 million to just such an initiative but, given the number of non-compliant units still on the road, this is widely deemed to be unsatisfactory.

Then there’s the not inconsiderable issue of actually finding an ULEZ friendly van. Supply chain issues means sourcing a new LCV is a protracted process with almost all manufacturers still reporting significant leads times and that, in turn, has pushed up the cost and availability of second-hand Euro 6 vehicles. At the same time electric vehicle prices are still prohibitive, the range in some of the larger 3.5tonne units remains relatively low, and the charging infrastructure is insufficient.

More time would equally not go amiss. The Mayor of London made his announcement in November of 2022, with the changes due to come into force

in August of 2023. By contrast, the last time the charging zone was expanded from central London to the North and South Circulars motorists had over two years to make the adjustment.

The current changes coincide with a period of inflated materials prices, increased labour costs, and squeezed margins. So, what’s likely to be the impact on builders in our biggest metropolis? Some will simply have to account for the extra outgoings or steel themselves for some difficult conversations with clients about increases on invoices.

Many micro and SME firms who currently ply their trade in the surrounding Home Counties will, however, almost certainly vote with their foot pedal and drive their business right out of town, eschewing work in London’s boroughs in favour of less costly climes in the suburbs. A scarcity of tradespeople means higher prices for homeowners, and a longer wait to find a decent builder. At a time when the repair, maintenance and improvement of our existing housing stock is becoming more pressing – not least from an environmental perspective – that’s hardly good news in the content of the climate change agenda. Moreover, many SMEs and their employees are in the business of building much needed new homes, or bringing empty and derelict properties back to habitability, an increase in both of which happens to be an avowed policy of City Hall.

It is often the case that where London leads the rest of the country will follow and that is certainly the pattern with clean air zones. The dilemmas that tradespeople face in the south-east will be replicated wherever an ULEZ is implemented. The army of builders up and down the land for whom their van is not just their mode of transport but a mobile office, and tools and materials carrier, will need greater support and consideration than they’re currently finding in our capital.

Worrying figures have shown that the suicide rate amongst construction workers in the UK has increased for the fifth year in a row. These figures come from the team at Glasgow Caledonian University’s Built Environment Asset Management Centre –in conjunction with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.

Press coverage of Government plans to ban power showers and restrict dual-flush toilets has stirred anger among bathroom manufacturers

A government press conference that revealed Defra’s Water Plan has met strong reaction from The Bathroom Manufacturers Association. While much of the plan’s content is welcomed by the BMA, Tom Reynolds, Chief Executive of the BMA, thought it “incredibly poor form” that these plans weren’t discussed with manufacturers before being revealed in the media. He also highlighted that “rash bans on products will set back innovation” and that low water pressure in the UK should be targeted first instead of the showers used to mitigate this.

The Builders Merchants Federation shares ULEZ concerns with Mayor of London in an open letter

The Ultra-Low Emission Zone is set to be expanded on August 29, imposing a £12.50 daily charge on noncompliant vehicles across all London Boroughs. John Newcomb, BMF CEO, has commneted, explaining that a significant proportion of SME tradespeople rely on non-compliant vehicles. He went on to say: “We can foresee a reluctance on their [tradespeople’s] part to accept new work within the Greater London boundary. This will have a knock-on effect for end customers, who will find it more difficult and costly to get work done.” Mr Newcomb has written a letter to Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, calling for the policy to be reconsidered.

ASBESTOS DANGERS

The Health and Safety Executive warns of asbestos dangers

Around five thousand people a year die from asbestos related illnesses and asbestos can still be found in buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000. This is a warning issued to plasterers and interior finishers across Great Britain by the Health and Safety Executive as part of its Asbestos and You campaign. HSE is warning that despite the ban on its use, many buildings still contain asbestos, and it is still a serious risk to anyone exposed to it at any age.

Direct Line transforms a van into an office to shine a light on tool theft

Research from Direct Line business insurance reveals 22 per cent of tradespeople report having tools stolen from their van in the last 12 months. Stealing from a van is classed as theft, whereas stealing equipment from an office is classed as non-domestic burglary, a crime that receives on average twice the custodial sentence. This is despite the importance tools and vans have to a tradesperson’s work and livelihood. To draw attention to the issue, Direct Line transformed a tradesperson’s van into an office at an industrial park in Slough. Joe Shadbolt, the tradesman in question, said: “Direct Line are shining a light on an issue that is having a fundamental impact on my livelihood.”

GROHE promotes opportunities for young talent in the sanitary industry Worldwide, the sanitary industry is struggling to attracting young people, while demand for installers continues to increase. GROHE is addressing this issue with its GIVE Program. This aims to interest women and young people in under-represented communities about the profession as well as support plumbing schools with modern equipment, training material and a written examination that sets new industry standards. The company has also partnered with WorldSkills International, a global platform to raise the profile and recognition of skilled people.

The Energy and Utilities Alliance has a strong response to Government boiler policy

The Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) has accused the UK Government of “selling British manufacturers down the river”, in suggesting British boiler makers will be fined when supplying UK consumers but foreign manufacturers won’t. Writing to the Minister, Lord Callanan, Mike Foster the CEO of EUA, stated: “Our industry has asked the government to meet to discuss our real concerns but our request has fallen on deaf ears. It seems, quite literally, as they want the British boiler industry to just go away.”

Ladder Association urges Government to clamp down on online marketplaces

Unsafe and potentially dangerous ladders continue to be sold online in the UK, according to a new safety report from the Ladder Association. The latest report is a follow on from the telescopic ladder market surveillance report undertaken by the Ladder Association in 2022, which found that over 80% of commercially-available telescopic ladders tested, failed to meet the minimum safety requirements. Worse still, this research found over half of the failed ladders were marked and sold as ‘compliant’ in a deliberate attempt to mislead consumers.

CIPHE talks the importance of water waste

In acknowledgment of Earth Day, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) urged plumbing and heating installers to consider their role in environmental protection, specifically in relation to water waste. Kevin Wellman, CEO of the CIPHE said: “Working in an industry that deals primarily with water use means installers have a core role to play. System efficiency is key.” The CIPHE advised that educating consumers as well as carrying out home health checks, in which qualified plumbing engineers inspect homes for leaks or other waste points, were great ways for installers to get involved.

INCREASING OUTPUT

Construction activity sees an increase in volume terms as well as achieving its highest monthly value on record.

Monthly construction output is estimated to have increased 2.4% in volume terms in February 2023. The month also saw the highest monthly value in level terms (£15,558 million) since records began in January 2010. The increase in monthly construction output came from increases in both repair and maintenance (4.5%) and new work (1.1%) as well as a bounce back from January’s low.

SHINING A LIGHT

If you ask a room full of construction workers what the industry’s biggest killer is what do you think will be the response? That’s the first question posed by the tour team to the group of Gallaway Construction employees and, predictably, the answer was falls from height. Again, when each of the almost exclusively male audience were in turn asked the simple, everyday question, ‘how are you?’ what would you guess would be the reply? Or, indeed, what would you say?

For most people, of course, the stock answer would be “I’m fine,” “I’m ok” or “I’m good.” The fact is, however, that falls from height is not the biggest killer amongst builders – it is suicide, and in a room full of builders of any decent size there’s a very good chance that at least a few of them are a very long way from OK. On average two people who work in construction are taking their own lives every working day, with the boots on the ground disproportionately represented in that tragic statistic, and the Lighthouse

Charity’s Make it Visible tour team are determined to change that.

The Campaign

Last spring, the Lighthouse Charity embarked upon its Make It Visible initiative. Since then three conspicuously liveried vans, supplied by campaign supporter, Ford – with hi vis vests to match – have been visiting sites up and

down the land promoting the vital support that the organisation offers, including its 24/7 helpline, whilst delivering the crucial message that, “if you’re struggling help is here” and encouraging people to use three simple words, “I need help”.

It is the charity’s avowed aim that no construction worker should be alone in a crisis, and it’s vital work on promoting good mental health is a testament to that ambition.

Since the initiative started the tour team have reached out to 38 people who were on the verge of taking their own lives. In 2022 the Make it Visible On Site team visited 173 sites and engaged with almost 9,000 site workers and so far this year they have visited 113 sites, including Gallaway Construction, all striving to remove the stigma that is attached to

mental health issues, and which can all too often prove fatal.

Each team visits at least 20 active building projects in the course of just one week in their Make it Visible van, conducting morning and afternoon sessions, and their commitment to the cause is born of hard-earned experience. The campaign message is clear – that talking and listening does help and the therapeutic value of telling their own genuinely moving stories to the group underscores that very point.

One of the team members was involved in a near fatal workplace accident that severely impacted on both his financial and psychological well-being. “After the accident my family and I were on our own – and that’s the reason I am involved with the Make it Visible tour, Because, with the support the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity can provide, you don’t have to be on your own and I wish I’d known that at the time.”

Another tour member struggled with what was for many years undiagnosed bipolar disorder, a condition which ended his marriage, ruined his career, and led to alcohol abuse. Even when his condition was identified he refused to accept it.

“Everyone feels anxiety and depression at some stage of their lives, but we don’t like to talk about it,” he confesses, “It was that stigma that stopped me from addressing the issue and even taking the decision to end my life.”

Problems and solutions

Those who resolve to take their own lives will often insist that they don’t want to die. It is, instead, a relentless narrowing down of options until they feel they don’t have any choice. Whilst he did not ultimately become one of the two construction workers who take their own lives every working day it was a friend’s death at his own hands that would prove a turning point. “The tragedy was that we didn’t even know he was struggling. We don’t communicate because we’re told to ‘man up’ or ‘grow a pair.’ If we can reach just one person, then we are making a difference I can confidently

declare that talking can be lifesaving because conveying my own experiences to others through the Make it Visible talks helps keep me alive. Every time I talk on these tours, people take the time to listen and by taking the time to listen to me, those people are helping me to be here tomorrow.”

Once the group session is over, the team explains the huge range of wellbeing support mechanisms –emotional, physical, and financial – that the Lighthouse Charity offers the industry and how they can be accessed. There’s also the opportunity for individuals to talk separately about their concerns with the Make it Visible team.

For companies like Gallaway Construction supporting the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity’s mental health services is part of its duty of care to its employees, as the contractor’s Commercial Director, Renee Preston explains: “The statistics are really horrible, and we want to help get the message across that there is help out there. These talks can resonate with people who are themselves struggling and it’s a beautiful charity.”

The construction industry is a problemsolving business, but when it comes to resolving mental health issues there is still the considerable barrier of stigma to overcome. What Make it Visible endeavours to communicate is that support is available, whilst the simple healing power of talking and listening should never be underestimated.

There is an old adage that time is money but, when it comes to electricity infrastructure, taking time out to consider the consequences of a close encounter could save you from serious harm. UK Power Networks owns and maintains

altering the supply –that’s a job that should be left to them.

“Last year the number of incidents of interfering with the electricity network tripled,” explains UK Power Networks’ Ros Forbes.

“Between April 2022 and March 2023 there have been over 1,000 instances of interference and UK Power Networks staff are now facing unsafe sites on a regular basis”

“These can include demolitions that have been carried out without waiting for a disconnection or a temporary connection, or maintenance and improvement projects, including extensions and basements. Lots of these sites are relatively open which can result in a danger to the tradesman on the job, members of the general public, residents, as well as to our own staff.”

So what is the safe path for tradespeople to follow?

When a contractor requires a service alteration – such as a disconnection, new connection or upgrade – this should be directed to UK Power Networks and a site survey will then be undertaken.

All too often, however, UK Power Networks surveyors are arriving on site

to find that the supply has already been moved, with assets often damaged or discarded. “We’ve seen instances where our live assets have been left in wheelie bins and live service cables hung up on fences,” continues Ros, “and that has potential to cause life changing injuries – or even death.”

It is the job of UK Power Networks to make sure that electricity flows safely and reliably, but it is also devoting considerable resources to educating builders on the importance of safety around electricity cables and power lines. “Tradespeople are a key target for us in order to communicate the safety message,” concludes Ros. “In their eagerness to crack on with the job, some builders are putting themselves and others at considerable risk, and every accident is wholly avoidable.”

Think before you dig is one of the core messages from the UK’s biggest electricity distributor as well as its Be Bright, Stay Safe campaign. It’s about raising the awareness of the dangers of excavation around the underground network and avoiding contact with overhead cables. What more should builders be doing to ensure everyone goes home safe and well?

Locate, identify, and clearly mark where cables are and make sure everyone working on site is aware. Underground utilities may not run in straight lines and can be routed around obstacles – or change depth – so it’s important to confirm the location of cables by using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT). Buried services should be clearly marked before excavating – with trial holes dug if necessary – and,

TURNING A PROFIT

HAVING HEFTY FIXED COSTS

Your business is costing you money before you’ve even gone on site or bought a pallet of bricks. It could be insurance, internet, phone bills, your van, equipment repayment, rent and so on. So, you need to keep a close eye on your fixed costs.

NOT HAVING A BUSINESS PLAN.

Without any direction your business will wander aimlessly from one job to the next, which isn’t a money maker. What value jobs do you want to go after? What will make you different? How are you going to finance the business? How will you get paid? What will you personally get paid? £40K? £60K? What’s your personal goal for the future?

NOT HAVING A BUSINESS MODEL.

There’s a subtle difference between this and a business plan. The plan is a written commitment. The model is about the numbers you will need to achieve your financial goals. It’s a spreadsheet forecast for the year – the turnover you expect, your likely costs, and your profit. It’s what you’re going to work towards. You could try a few different versions – such as a business that will give you a £50K annual pre-tax profit – a business that will give you £100K. Either way, start with your breakeven point, and build on that.

NOT CHARGING FOR EVERYTHING.

This is the 101 of running a business. You charge all the variable costs (the project itself), all the fixed costs in the

form of a percentage of your annual overheads, plus wastage, inflation, and then a profit margin. Some tricky calculations there for anyone, so I’d advise using estimating software like EstimatorXpress, that does all the sums for you.

5 NOT ACCURATELY PRICING THE JOB. You can’t go putting your hand in your own pocket every time to fund materials you forgot to quote for, the labour you miscalculated or the plant you didn’t allow enough days for. You’re in the red before you’ve even started. If you can’t hold the many variables in your head, then use professional estimating software, such as EstimatorXpress, that

6 NOT ACCOUNTING FOR FUTURE OVERHEADS. This is a tough one! Yes, you should keep outgoings to the minimum when you start out but you should quote as though you’re already where you want to be. Quote your overhead percentage as though you already have a book-keeper, a small office, a yard, a second van, and so on. Just because your running costs are lean now, it’s not good business to pass those savings on to the customer. And you’ll never have the funds to grow. Established competitors will have these overheads already – guaranteed. Don’t look cheap in comparison. Start as you mean to go on.

7 NOT CHARGING ENOUGH PROFIT.

This is an article all of its own. Your profit margin – the percentage you slap on at the end – isn’t there to cover everything other than the cost of the materials etc. It’s not for your outgoings (or your salary). That’s all in your overhead percentage. Your profit margin is for upgrading equipment, expansion, marketing, paying off finance, bonuses, pensions, and importantly, reserves for leaner times and bad payers. 10% is unlikely to be sufficient to keep your business in profit – and importantly –sustainable. You want a business that could be sold, or handed on, or brought to a close with a decent lump sum to show for it.

8 LOOKING AT YOUR ACCOUNTS JUST ONCE A YEAR. You can’t stuff all your receipts in a carrier bag and

present them to the accountant once a year to do the tax return. That will be way too late to discover that things haven’t gone to plan. You should look at your profit and loss quarterly, if not monthly, so you can change tack accordingly. A retained accountant would be money well spent. They can look at your business model and see how your actual income and expenditure are measuring up.

NOT MANAGING CASHFLOW. This is the main reason businesses go under. You need to know exactly when bills are due and when you’re going to be paid. With that knowledge you know how much you need in the bank at any one time to cover your costs. If your spending outstrips your income then you will start struggling to pay your suppliers or lenders. Every couple of weeks assess cash in and out for a couple of months ahead. A part-time book keeper could do this for you. And, incidentally, an EstimatorXpress estimate pack includes a cashflow forecast, which is massively helpful.

THE WRONG MINDSET. At the start I mentioned courage. You need more than that. You need to be unwavering in the belief that the only kind

mindset. If it means a quiet month or two, that could be less of a blow than subbing the customer by paying for some of the materials, plant or labour out of your own pocket, or not paying yourself. Yes, you also need to have good credentials and present a professional image to win good work. Yes, you need to market yourself well to catch the eye of customers with larger projects. But with the right mindset and good business management, the rest will follow.

QWith regards to tools cover, are the tools covered in the van overnight?

Paul Hildyard (PH) Certain insurers will provide cover for tools left in a van overnight even if it is parked on the road, but you will need to check your policy wording very carefully. If such cover is provided, insurers will look for signs of forced entry like a broken window or locks etc. They will not cover you if you leave your van unlocked while unloading and your tools are stolen, so take care!

QHow much tools cover can I get?

PH Depending on the insurance company, there are policies which offer £1,000, £1,500, £2,500, or £10,000 hand tools cover. Some of them will include your own plant and machinery under this section too, others will have a separate section for these.

QWhat tools are covered?

PH As a general rule if you pick up the tool and apply it to the work, it is classified as a hand tool with most companies. If, however, you have to pick the work up – say, for example, a plank of wood which you place onto a bench with a fixed saw on, it would be classified as machinery.

QI use a self-employed person to help me sometimes and I supply the materials and tools, but they have their own public liability insurance so presumably I don’t need to insure them?

PH Labour only sub contractors, even if they have their own public liability insurance are classified as employees and you are required to have employers liability cover for them (by law).

QI’m not really concerned about covering him for Employers Liability –I’ve known him for years.

PH Be careful – even if this person is your best friend! If they have an accident and cannot work and, therefore, don’t have an income, they could still pursue a claim for compensation. A no win no fee claims company or solicitor would consider whether they felt you were liable and, if they thought you had a case to answer, may commence a claim against you. If you did not have employers liability cover, which is, of course, a legal requirement in many circumstances, you would be personally responsible for meeting the claim which could easily run into 10’s of £1000’s of pounds. You could lose your home! Is it worth it?

QCan I have all the cover I need under one policy?

PH ‘Contractors all risks’ is a term used for a policy which generally covers a few things, such as public liability, employers liability, plant & machinery cover etc. However, if you are being asked to have this cover in place, the majority of times it

will be because you are required to have contract works cover. This provides cover for the work that you carry out, along with materials, up until the point of completion. Depending on the policy, it may be possible to have contract works added to your Public Liability policy, otherwise a separate standalone policy could be arranged.

QI damaged a bath I had fitted while I was carrying out tiling – when I tried to claim they said I wasn’t covered. A. The majority of companies exclude items that are part of your ‘contracted works’ under public liability, so if you damage something that you have fitted or built which is part of the contract that you are working on, it wouldn’t be covered. Again you would need contract works cover to protect the work you are doing until completion of that particular contract.

The latest Construction Skills Network Report from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) estimates that 225,000 extra workers will be needed to meet UK construction demand by 2027. That’s 45,000 additional workers every year.

The same report estimates that the total workforce in the construction industry was 2.66 million in 2022. Of that, 51,000 were plasterers but this is expected to shrink to 48,900 by 2027.

Meanwhile, the most recent construction output figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that the industry is moving in a positive direction with construction output in February 2023 increasing by 2.4%. This was largely due to a 4.5% increase in repair and maintenance work and a 1.1% increase in new work. This is great news for plasterers with increasing home maintenance and repair work as well as commercial retrofits and upgrades.

Retain the people we have

It’s clear that as well as bringing fresh talent into the industry via more outreach to schools, work experience opportunities, college courses and apprenticeships, we also need to retain the people we already have in the construction industry. One way we can do this is by embracing a range of opportunities for upskilling, whether that is through more official routes such as vocational education, apprenticeships and

distance learning or through onsite training support from manufacturers.

Since the COVID pandemic, we’ve noticed a trend for tradespeople upskilling to develop new skills in areas that have synergies with their original skills. For example, at the start of

How and where to get your training

If you’re interested in learning a new skill, training is available through a variety of routes including college courses, distance learning and onsite training support from manufacturers.

TAKE ON BOARD

QWhat is Kerdi-Board made of and how does it maintain its waterproof credentials?

Andrew Curry (AC) Schlüter-Kerdi-Board is a multi-functional tile backerboard. The core of the board is made of an extruded polystyrene (XPS), with a waterproof cement-free reinforcement layer on both sides.

QWhich substrates is Kerdi-Board suitable for?

AC The product is designed to replace sheet materials that should be avoided in wet areas, such as plywood or plasterboard. It can be installed directly onto traditional stud frames made of wood or metal. The material can also be installed directly onto masonry using dabs of adhesive (like plasterboard).

QIs there a range of thicknesses available? What do I need to bear in mind when specifying a particular thickness?

AC Yes, Kerdi-Board is available in thicknesses of 5, 9, 12.5, 19, 28, 38 and 50mm. The type of application will dictate the thickness required. For installing onto stud frames, the wider the stud frame then the thicker the board. Where the stud frame is constructed to 400mm centres, a 12.5mm thick board is the minimum recommended thickness. If used for construction purposes, then generally the 28, 38 or 50mm sizes can be considered, depending on the design, of course. A ‘Board selection and fixing guide’ is available to help with choosing board thickness.

QCan I use it in curved constructions or for pipe boxing?

AC Absolutely! Schlüter offers L- or Ushaped versions for pipe boxing, as well as a board with vertical grooves for creating curved features such as walls or seating. These prefabricated options make installation quicker and easier.

QWhat other uses is the material suitable for?

AC Kerdi-Board is often referred to as ‘LEGO for installers’… its limits are your own imagination! It can be used to create kitchen countertops, vanity units, shelving, and partition walls. Don’t be fooled by how lightweight it is; because it can hold significant loads. Over the years, we have seen all sorts of concepts come to fruition, including a pet feeding station, dog shower and even an impressive Millennium Falcon!

QCan it be used in flooring?

AC Yes, providing the flooring system is load bearing it can be used in residential floor areas. Typically, this would be for insulation benefits or waterproofing.

QCan you give us an indication of the full range?

AC Sure, all seven thicknesses are available in a choice of 2.6m or 1.25m long boards, both lengths are 62.5cm wide. As well as the prefabricated boards for pipe boxing and curved designs, Kerdi-Board niches are available in various sizes, with or without lighting to create storage in wall areas.

QDo you need any special tools? To cut the boards to size, for instance?

AC No special tools are required to work. The thinner boards can be easily cut using a utility knife, with the imprinted gridlines making this easier. We’d recommend cutting the thicker boards using hand tools or power tools to give a neat, square edge. Being cement-free, no dust is created when cutting for a healthier, cleaner working environment.

QWhat adhesive will I need to use and does the system also require wall anchors? Is the adhesive applied to the substrate or the board? What screws would be suitable for the system?

AC A cement-based tile adhesive is used and can be applied to either the substrate or the Kerdi-Board. Depending on the substrate, you’ll need to either fully embed the board or use the dot and dab method. For intricate details or when using the thinner boards, we’d recommend Schlüter-Kerdi-Fix, a MS polymer-based elastic adhesive. If needed, there’s also a range of hardware accessories for mechanical fixing, including screws, washers, wall anchors and a selection of brackets.

QHow are any joints sealed?

AC To ensure a fully waterproof installation, the joints and corners must be fully covered with the sealing band SchlüterKerdi-Keba, which is embedded using the sealing adhesive Schlüter-Kerdi-Coll-L. The range includes pipe collars and prefabricated corners for waterproofing these tricky areas.

QWhat are the typical curing times?

AC If using Kerdi-Coll-L, you’ll need to allow an hour for this to fully cure before tiling, as well as observing the curing time of the chosen tile adhesive if this has been used too.

QWhat support do you offer tradespeople who are installing Kerdi Board? Is there any training available?

AC Being different to many other boards on the market, KerdiBoard usually generates a lot of interest with installers so is a key part of our training courses. We have installation documents to help if needed, although we often receive feedback that it’s an incredibly easy product to work with.

MIXER FOR PLASTER AND RENDER

Amixer is a valuable part of a professional’s kit, whether that is mixing plaster, render, mortar, floor levelling compound, tile adhesive or paint. However, not all mixers are suitable for all materials. For example, while battery powered handheld mixers provide the flexibility and convenience of cordless, often they are not designed for mixing more viscous materials and using these mixers in this way can shorten the

performance and run-times required for even the most demanding tasks. For example, the Makita 40VMax UT001G XGT Brushless Mixer, delivers a power output that matches corded alternatives. This level of performance is in part due to the inclusion of brushless motor technology – a key feature that professionals should look for when selecting a cordless mixer. Motors with brushes rely on contact between carbon brushes and a rotary electrical switch to drive the action of the tool. While this is effective, the continual contact causes friction that generates heat and wastes energy. In contrast, with a brushless motor, an on-board electronic circuit sends electric currents to convert the copper coils within the motor into electromagnets. This creates north and south magnetic poles that attract and repel the permanent magnets on the rotor shaft to rotate it continuously. By eliminating this wasted energy, a brushless motor can produce more torque, allowing the same results to be achieved with less power used. In fact, choosing a tool with a brushless motor can extend run times by up to 50% per battery charge for greater productivity and fewer recharges.

Versatility

As the types of material being mixed can vary, it is valuable to select a machine that is adaptable to the task at hand, such as compatibility with different mixing blades. As an example, the Makita UT001G has an M12 fitting as standard and is also supplied with an M14 adaptor, allowing a wider range of commonly available mixing blades to be fitted. In addition, the uniquely designed 220mm diameter propeller blade supplied with the UT001G can be inverted and a second blade added to provide better performance when mixing larger volumes in deeper containers.

Control over the speed of the mixer is another factor that needs to be considered. Lower speeds are generally required when mixing materials with higher viscosities, such as concrete, while higher speeds are more suitable for materials such as plaster and paint. Also, better control of the mixer’s speed may be needed to prevent splashing and waste of the material being mixed. The Makita UT001G features a two-speed mechanical gearbox offering 0-500rpm in low-speed mode and 0-920rpm in highspeed mode. There is also a variable

And, speaking of quick, Mega Stik has been developed with speed very much in mind. Thanks to the product’s unique formulation, boards only need to be held in place for 60 seconds after which the level of bond strength achieved will be sufficient to support them.

Mega Stik also cures in just one hour, using atmospheric moisture, and then the bonded board’s surface is suitable for plastering. Of course, in a world and an industry where time is money, this increased speed of application and curing delivers significant commercial dividends.

Iyears then it would be fair to say that you know a thing or two about that particular type of home improvement project. That’s certainly the case with Jon Moore and the team at Room at the Top, who pride themselves on a winning combination of an efficient build and quality finish. After the tremendous response received for this column last year I thought I’d take another look at the latest movers and shakers in the window and door market, especially garden doors. For although we are almost halfway through the year by the time you get to read this, it’s been a slow start to the spring and summer weather-wise and that does have a massive effect on sales. Yes, of course, everyone should plan ahead but if we did, then there wouldn’t be a massive surge in fan and aircon sales the minute the mercury tops 30 degrees. Human nature and especially for us Brits…

I have talked previously about a cracking new-ish type of bi-fold that offers all the plusses of this fantastic door style, but with none of the disadvantages – the folding/sliding door. Well, now that these are more widely available – including from yours truly – you can offer them with confidence.

The advantages over bi-folds? The leaves aren’t hinged so when the primary door is opened (just like a bi fold) the panels can then be slid open individually, anywhere along the rail. Plus, no allowance for the concertina effect is required, allowing furniture or plants to be positioned right up to the door. But whilst authenticity is crucial to buyers of this type of window, not only do they appreciate the modern, high performance of new replacements manufactured in modern materials, they can now benefit from the latest hi-tech, security.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

The growth of urban developments over the last few decades has certainly created exciting skylines across the nation and whilst this is testament to innovative architectural feat there is no denying that it comes at a cost, resulting in the loss of vast green spaces and increased pollution.

As people continue to migrate towards towns and cities, demand for new-builds in the residential sector has soared, with the number of houses being built reaching its highest in over 20 years. This has placed housebuilders under increased pressure to incorporate more sustainable practices into their designs to reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate environmental risk.

Hardscaping is a critical component in any landscape design, whether new build or as part of a home improvement project, offering practical (and decorative) structure to a landscape – from driveways, stairs and pathways to patios, fences, and decking areas. When

considering hardscaping elements, such as pavers, you will probably want the very best in form and function. It is vital paving delivers a stunning first impression. Of course, the colour, texture and how they are laid are all essential elements, but strength, high levels of consistency, colour integrity and overall performance are equally important for the professional who puts their name to the design.

Concrete answer

Concrete paving blocks and flagstones have truly come of age, providing a more sustainable alternative to its natural stone counterpart. Flooding and flash flooding have been all too prevalent over the last few years in the UK and managing flood risk is becoming even more important, as is water conservation. and engineer’s toolbox. Implementing SuDS with water recycling and rainwater harvesting enables us to cut down on primary water use and as SuDS manage water at the source, allowing builders to avoid the cost of large-scale infrastructure to transport the surface water as well as significantly reducing land grab required by the site therefore reducing the carbon footprint of the project.

Zero to hero

There is often little warning when it comes to surface water flooding. Although weather forecasting is improving all the time, it is not always impossible to forecast intense rain. We are seeing the government raise SuDS higher up in their agenda and the wide-scale implementation of sustainable urban drainage systems now play a vital role in helping to meet pressing climate targets –with the UK having a nationwide 2050 net zero carbon target.

With all their impressive environmental credentials, such as pollution control, by treating the water before it enters the

water course and erosion control, by slowing down the flow, it is perhaps somewhat surprising that their uptake was initially slow. This may have been due to the misconceptions surrounding SuDS that they are expensive, impractical and impact negatively on a project’s aesthetic. However, nowadays the inclusion of softscaping elements such as ponds within public space allows developers to

integrate SuDS in these features, enhancing the look of the job and even adding value in some cases.

GET THE LOW DOWN

Building Regulation requirements for heating systems have changed, bringing low-flow temperatures to the mainstream. Chris Ingram, Founder of Continal Underfloor Heating, explains why this will inevitably lead to more underfloor heating systems being installed.

The latest changes to Part L were introduced to help drive the modernisation of the UK’s housing stock, requiring a 31% reduction in the carbon emissions of newbuild properties. This means a maximum flow temperature of 55°C for all new heating systems in England and Wales – a significant reduction from the 80°C flow temperatures that you are likely used to working with.

Low flow temperature heating systems were brought in as a step towards the introduction of the Future Homes and Building Standard which, in 2025, is expected to require carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced by new homes to be around 75 to 80% lower than current levels, as well as potentially banning the use of gas boilers in newbuild properties.

These Part L changes present a challenge for those builders used to installing more traditional radiator-led

systems, and who may lack the resources to thoroughly investigate all the available alternatives, such as

We regularly talk our customers through how to make sure they are compliant with the new regulations, as well as how to choose an appropriate UFH system for the building that will also work with the end-user’s budgetary constraints. For more complex floor solutions that may require acoustic

and installation of the heating system simple and straightforward.

Although these regulations have already been in place for a year, it’s possible that you haven’t yet needed to design a low-temperature heating system, since the Government said these requirements would not apply to any development that had begun construction before June 2023. And the Part L changes don’t yet cover systems in existing buildings, unless the entire heating system is being ripped out and replaced. But now we have reached that 12-month deadline, you are likely to start encountering these low-temperature systems more often and so it’s important to fully understand how they work, and why they’re different from what you may be used to.

Low flow temperature systems need larger heat emitters with a much greater surface area to provide the heat outputs people are used to enjoying from 80°C flow temperatures. This makes it more challenging to use radiators as heat emitters without having to fit additional or larger radiators in each room.

Alternatively, when you combine a gas boiler with UFH you are turning the entire floor of a property into a giant heat emitter, creating a more efficient, lowtemperature system and maximising the living space inside the home since there is no need for radiators.

UFH has been installed in UK homes for decades. It is a proven heating technology that homeowners have embraced thanks to its luxurious comfort, warmth and efficiency. UFH is also significantly more efficient than radiatorled systems, giving customers muchneeded savings on energy bills with the cost of living currently so high.

At Continal Underfloor Heating we’re used to designing low-flow temperature systems that work with a wide range of fuel sources including gas boilers, heat pumps and solar panels. A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY

Osliding doors have become staple investments for homeowners. Not only do they add financial value to their home, but they also increase functionality. Windows, on the other hand, are still seen by many homeowners as a necessity and somewhat of a commodity. They install and replace as they need to, but they don’t spend as long considering the different options available to them as they do with bigger glazing products.

However, our consumer research suggests that the cause of this sentiment is a lack of knowledge about the breadth of window designs available. There is a common misconception that all windows are the same. Whilst they can be made bespoke in terms of materials and colours, fundamentally, people feel they all perform the same role. This isn’t true.

Windows are an essential part of all properties. They let in natural light and aid ventilation whilst ensuring that the home remains weather tight and secure.

Alongside functionality, modern designs can improve the overall aesthetic of a house and improve how a home is interacted with too.

Choosing the right windows

Despite the housing market faltering at the beginning of 2023, Q2 has been more positive, and we expect this to continue throughout the rest of the year. Throughout this tough time, we are still seeing homeowners invest in their properties; they are just parking their large-scale plans in favour of smaller renovation projects. This includes replacing old uPVC windows with modern, aluminium variants.

This presents an opportunity for those interacting with homeowners and influencing their renovation decisions. By educating homeowners on how the right windows can help them meet their wider property goals, such as thermal efficiency, there are important projects to be secured. With rising energy costs, homeowners

are increasingly looking for ways to make their homes more thermally efficient as a long-term way to reduce household bills. Windows are an effective way to do this and can have more of an impact than a door set could. This means more light can enter a property, views are maximised, and they perfectly frame the outside instead of inhibiting it.

Although homeowners have tightened their belts, they continue to prioritise their well-being and how their homes promote this. WAX WORKS

When installing wooden floors or preserving furniture they should be treated correctly to increase the longevity but trying to select a product that can do this can be overwhelming. The whole point of having a wooden floor is because you want a natural look so the last thing you would want to do is apply something on the floor that makes it look artificial.

I was looking forward to trying out a new product that has just come onto the market which is the Barrettine ArmourFlex

Hardwax Oil to see if it really is groundbreaking. Barrettine has a long and proud history of producing quality chemical products, so it was reassuring to know that they have plenty of experience in this field – 140 years to be exact. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the manufacturer produces an extensive range of products.

Obviously, preparation is key because failing to prepare is preparing to fail. So, sanding down the floor or furniture – and making sure it’s thoroughly clean and free from dust – is essential. A tip to make sure it’s degreased is to wipe it down with methylated spirits. The good news is this oil just needs a little stir and it’s ready to use from the tin. The consistency seems perfect as it’s not too thick or thin.

Application

Depending on what you’re treating it can be applied to the surface using a short pile roller, quality brush or lint free cloth. It only requires thin coats and straight away

you can see it enhances the wood grain. Even though it is oil based, it still dries in good time and is ready for a second coat in 6-8 hours depending on the climate conditions.

As it states in the name ArmourFlex is hard wearing, making it stain, dirt and scratch resistant. So, there’s no need to cry over spilled milk or any other drinks, because once it’s cleaned up, it’ll be as good as new. It is important to point out that it is food and toy safe which is a big factor when it comes to choosing a product because children’s safety will always come first. It is also available in two finishes – Matt and Satin – depending on what appearance you’re wanting to achieve.

WATER WORLD

Searching for the correct paint to use can feel like opening a can of worms – it’s difficult to know where to start. Well, I got started by opening a few tins of Dulux Trade Paints to see if they really do add colour to my life.

First up was the Dulux Quick Dry Undercoat in white. This undercoat is suitable for many surfaces from wood, MDF, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It’s good to know it can be used on various surfaces which reduces the number of tins needed for each separate surface. Depending on what you are painting it can be applied with a brush, roller or even sprayed on. When mixing it in the tin, it felt like it had a great consistency, but I wanted to see if it was consistent on the surface it was being applied to.

I was really impressed with the coverage, especially when painting on

paint at speed. Also, with it being water based it means that it has low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and is, therefore, virtually odorless. Some may like the fresh smell of paint but when you’re using it all day the last thing you want is to be floating at the end of the day. The other benefits of it being water based is that it’s easy to apply and easy to clean brushes and your hands, which is particularly handy if you’re a messy worker.

Quick work

More importantly, being water-based helps it to be quick drying. When you’re pushed for time the last thing you want is to drag the job on for a few days just because you’ve had to wait for the paint to dry in between coats. This takes around 4-5 hours to dry so it’s possible to get two coats done in a day before

grabbing your coat and going. The next day it will be fully dried and creates an ideal foundation for Dulux Trade Quick Dry Gloss.

Another couple of diamonds are the Dulux Trade Diamond Satinwood Paints. Here, Jenny Wren, is a deep khaki shade and Chiltern White is a warm grey and is ultra pale. Again, these are both suitable for use on wood, MDF, ferrous and nonferrous metals.

With it being water based it has all the benefits that the Dulux Trade Undercoat has and more. Once it’s dried it is very tough and provides excellent protection from scratches, stains, and grease – just like a diamond. Unlike some paints, this is non-yellowing so you don’t have to worry about giving it another coat now and again. Drying time and recoat time is 6 hours and on the tin it suggests what undercoat to use to get the best coverage, and means it will go a long way without having to stretch the paint out. Having these properties makes it ideal to use on high traffic areas, such as corridors and stairways.

Dulux always steps up to the occasion and these paints are perfect when changing a room. I didn’t think painting could be therapeutic, but it has certainly been a joy with these products.

job,” explains Andre Marsberg, Sales Executive at the power tool manufacturer.

Top billing in the roadshow currently belongs to the 5Ah Powerstack battery –the latest development of a platform that was first introduced with the 1.7Ah compact Powerstack in the spring of 2022. For a builder looking for more power, the tradeoff has hitherto been a larger battery – or even a tool that features two 18V battery packs. The DeWalt concept defies conventional thinking with a smaller and yet more powerful solution. If that’s not enough for you it will also last much longer than any other comparable product. So just how does it do that? Heat is the nemesis of all lithium-ion batteries, and if it can be mitigated against in the design it will prolong their life.

Where traditional batteries are made up of an internal structure of cylindrical cells, the DeWalt innovation features flatter and wider pouch power cells, in a stacked construction, providing a greater surface area. This then allows them to dissipate any heat build-up more efficiently, extending the battery’s longevity in the process. So much so, in fact, that DeWalt can confidently offer a 3-year warranty on Powerstack, where there is 1-year on the standard 12, 18 and 54V packs.

Moving on to power output, the unique cell structure also delivers increases here, but with less weight and from a battery pack of noticeably more compact dimensions. Indeed, it is the size – with the 1.7Ah around 25 per cent smaller than the standard battery – that’s the first clue that there is some rather clever design work within the casing. Pouch cells have inherently less internal resistance, higher voltage and higher current under load. Essentially, there’s an increased level of energy density in the Powerstack cells, which means you can reduce the size, whilst increasing the power – by as much as 50% on the 5Ah.

Small wonder

In a tool like the recently launched DCF850 Impact Driver the Powerstack size is a perfect complement to an already compact machine, whilst better balance is achieved, and it can be used for an extended period of time with less fatigue.

Most builders will remain loyal to a brand at least in part because the batteries work across the whole of a manufacturer’s range. With Powerstack tradespeople who have already bought into the extensive DeWalt XR Tools portfolio can continue to utilise them because both the new batteries will work across all of the company’s 18V solutions.

So where will 5ah Powerstack find its home? It should first be recognised that amp hour is not a designation of power but of run time. Think of it as rather like the fuel tank on your car – an increase in volume means more mileage and the same applies to amp hours. The higher the number the more runtime between charges. In that context you might consider the original 1.7Ah Powerstack to be a relatively low figure but this, again, is where DeWalt’s

technology departs from convention.

Andre explains more: “When we first introduced Powerstack we demonstrated its potential with our DCD805 two-speed combi drill and a 25mm Tri Flute drill bit. We first used a standard cylindrical cell 2amp hr battery and achieved 25 holes in treated 6x2 timber. With the Powerstack compact battery we were able to get 49 in the same material. That level of performance means you can do far more before you have to charge or change the

battery. At the same time, whilst every battery will have a finite number of charges it can take, Powerstack actually increases that number, which again adds to the battery life, and means the customer is spending less on batteries.”

DeWalt is now providing 5Ah batteries as part of a kit with its DCD999 three speed combi drill, the most powerful tool of its class in the manufacturer’s range. As a rule of thumb, the larger the drill bit the slower the speed should be so, with a holesaw larger than 35mm, for example, you would select the lowest speed setting. When the machine is utilising the 5Ah Powerstack battery, however, bigger drill bits can be powered with higher speeds, again getting more done in less time.

Cut above

Andre also demonstrates Powerstack’s potential with the DCS570 Circular Saw with a 184mm blade cutting through three sheets of 18mm OSB at the same time –not a task you’d normally undertake on site, of course, but it does put the battery through its paces and graphically illustrates how Powerstack is the perfect partner when performance really matters. With a standard battery the excessive load on the machine will cause it to automatically cut out as a safety precaution. By contrast, a 5Ah Powerstack ploughs through regardless. “Regardless of the application – whether it’s drilling, grinding or cutting, the result is the same,” enthuses Andre, “there’s more cuts and more holes per charge.”

“The beauty of these events is that you can demonstrate exactly what can be achieved with the Powerstack and the new tools,” concludes Andre, “and we’ve had many tradespeople who’ve bought a machine straight away.”

DeWalt’s strapline for its XR Flex Volt range was the “Power of corded, freedom of cordless”. Indeed, battery powered tools are now easily on a par with their mains counterparts. DeWalt’s 5Ah Powerstak concept develops that theme still further, with additional increases in runtimes and output.

FLEECE PULLOVER

Looking the part

The first of the three bits of workwear I’ll be reviewing, the Spruce Vintage Fleece Pullover, is certainly the most eye-catching. The colours look great, the fit is nice and the arms have a material strip along them that adds to the overall aesthetic.

More importantly, it’s practical too, managing to be comfortable and warm. In fact, I’ve worn this on a number of our colder Spring days and been suitably impressed. This is no doubt thanks to the 350gsm 100% polyester high pile borg fleece that it’s made of, which really does feels like top notch stuff.

Features wise, the fleece has a half zip that feels comfortable open or closed and a chest pocket which uses the company’s branded snap fastening. While this pocket works well, and is handy to have, it contrasts with the lack of midriff pockets, leaving nowhere to keep your hands warm.

WORK TROUSERS

Next up is a pair of Infiltrate Stretch work trousers in Black. Now I have to say, these are probably some of the most comfortable work trousers I’ve ever worn. The lining on the inside feels warm yet breathable and the 100% polyester woven stretch softshell fabric of the trousers ensures a great fit that moves with you. This was a welcome surprise as I’ve always been cursed with broad legs that often make work trousers a bit of a nuisance. As another plus, the trousers end in a bootcut that goes nicely over the ankles of my boots.

General and safety specific features include a sturdy outer fabric that’s tear and abrasion resistant, triple stitched seams and a reinforced crotch seam to prevent any embarrassing mishaps. The trousers also come with a water-repellent coating and there are reflective seams to give you a bit more visibility.

Pockets are always a big feature of work trousers and these have them in abundance. There’s detachable holsters, zipped pockets, back pockets and tool loops. The one downside was none of these seemed to fit my phone very well!

The last bit of workwear sent to me was the Stellar Vest bodywarmer. This was a great final piece to the set and can be worn very comfortably as an outer third layer or just straight on top of a t shirt. It’s made from 100% polyester ripstop with a PU coating, has a taffeta lining, Thermo-Guard insulation and warm scrim pocket lining.

Speaking of pockets, this bodywarmer certainly isn’t lacking in them either. It has 4 lower pockets, two with zips and two without and two separate hand warming slits with a toasty fabric lining inside. There’s also a couple of outer chest pockets and one on the inside. You shouldn’t have any trouble getting your phone into the inside one and can feel secure knowing it’s not going to fall out anytime soon.

Overall, the bodywarmer does what it sets out to do and keeps it simple. It’ll keep most of the rain off of you and help you stay warm, there’s plenty of pockets and it looks pretty good too.

Final Thoughts

As my first experience with Regatta

Professional workwear, I’m impressed. There’s a higher price point for the stuff, particularly the trousers, but this comes across as reflective of the quality. All of the gear I was sent looked great together and individually (in fact, I haven’t stopped wearing the fleece!). To sum it up, everything feels comfortable, practical and fit for purpose. I look forward to seeing what Regatta Professional does next!

CLAY TIME!

When it comes to complicated roofing jobs, assembling the right team makes all the difference. Working hand in hand with architects and roofing contractors, Marley was able to provide the right product and support at the right time for a complex roof refurbishment project at Chester Zoo.

With over 20,000 animals on its 128 acres site, Chester Zoo is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting over 1.6 million visitors each year, and, as part of its ongoing development plans, has recently undertaken a refurbishment project of an old Grade II listed stable block that will provide a standout wedding venue helping to generate additional income.

Overcoming challenges

With a tight construction deadline, listed building challenges, and the presence of a large population of bats in an adjacent roof void to consider, Marley provided a suitable roofing solution to complement the heritage of the stables, whilst also meeting its pressing construction timetable. As a result of the complex brief, 13,000 Marley Canterbury Clay Plain tiles

Making complicated simple Dan Redfern, Marketing Manager at Marley, said: ‘It quickly became clear that that we had several challenges to address, including matching the aesthetics of the roofing solution with a tile choice that could satisfy the special planning requirements of the listed building as well as a build schedule planned around the welfare of the nesting bat population.

‘With the bats’ protected status, it is unlawful to disturb them once they start nesting. This meant that the refurbishment of the building and roof had to commence and be largely completed before the bats returned to the site for nesting season. In addition, there was the technical challenge around the roof ventilation – it had to comply with current British

Standards BS 5250, and at the same time, allow enough access for the bats to enter the roof space as they required.’

From sample to supply Marley’s extensive support, ranging from its sample service, quick material supply to site and expertise from the Technical Team, helped ensure the project delivered on its objectives.

During the early stages of the project, Marley organised tile samples to ensure that the final tile choice – its distinctive Canterbury Clay Plain roof tile – matched existing roof aesthetics on nearby structures and, to comply with the planning requirements of the building’s Grade II listed status, was manufactured using a natural material. Traditionally handmade, the Canterbury delivers a unique and beautiful finish designed to further enhance the aesthetics of the stables.

With the construction timetable under completion pressure, Marley was able to organise swift site delivery of the required tile volumes. By alleviating potential product supply issues which could have compromised the ability to finish the refurbishment on time, Marley’s team ensured the project remained on track.

Specialist advice on hand when required Marley’s Technical Advisory Service (TAS) was on hand at all stages of the project to ensure the roof ventilation and bat access challenges were met. In particular, the specified ventilation solution at the eaves level not only meets the prevailing standard as set out in the Building Regulations, but also provides safe and easy access for the nesting bats who have, for many years, used the roof space.

Dan said: ‘It’s been great to use our team’s roofing expertise to help contribute to a successful refurbishment project at Chester Zoo. The work has brought an old building back to life in a sympathetic way and the newly retiled roof, using stunning Canterbury Clay Plain tiles, fits seamlessly in its location, matching the surrounding roofs. We delivered product supply assurance to keep the project to its timescale and, critically, found a ventilation solution that enables the protected bat population to continue in its favoured nesting habitat.’

QWhat applications are JG Speedfit pipes and fittings suitable for?

RICHARD BATEMAN (RB) The pipes and fittings are fit for a wide range of plumbing applications, in both domestic and light commercial settings, including cold and hot water applications, either as the main system pipework for an entire property or for directly connecting a supply to a fixture or appliance.

The JG Speedfit plumbing and heating system is also compatible with central heating applications; however, it is recommended to not directly connect the system to a boiler.

Although the specification tolerances of Speedfit PEX and Polybutylene pipework is adequate for a direct boiler connection, it’s recommended that the first metre of pipe away from the boiler be copper, which can then be connected to Speedfit pipe.

QCan JG Speedfit products be used outside?

RB As long as the pipes and fittings are sufficiently insulated, the products can definitely be installed outside. Whilst the plastic of the pipework is not likely to fracture or split due to lack of insulation, as is often the case with copper alternatives, the water inside of the pipework can still freeze if conditions are cold enough.

Similarly, although the pipes and fittings offer insulating properties themselves, an extra layer of protection goes a long way to ensure that they don’t get damaged. This insulation should comply with BS EN 806.

Additionally, for underground pipework, there is JG Speedfit’s range of MDPE fittings, which are, of course,

designed to be used outside. This range is shock resistant and is designed to be even more robust than our standard Speedfit fittings.

Both inserts need only be used when working with plastic pipe, when working with copper pipe, they are not required.

QWhich pipe materials are compatible with the JG Speedfit Twist & Lock fittings?

QAre inserts required when using JG Speedfit fittings, and what is the difference between the standard and Superseal inserts?

RB When using JG Speedfit fittings with polybutylene or PEX pipe, it is essential that a pipe insert is installed. These are often also referred to as pipe supports, and it’s not hard to see why – as they do just that. Both types of pipe inserts, ensure that the connection within the fitting is rigid, which prevents any leaks or accidental disconnections when working with plastic pipe.

The standard pipe inserts can be used in conjunction with compression type fittings or standard type Speedfit connections – for example those featured on our JG Underfloor Heating Manifolds.

However, if connecting to a Twist & Lock fitting, we recommend using our Superseal pipe inserts instead. Superseal pipe inserts contain dual O-Rings to provide even greater sealing security than a standard insert. And when they are used alongside Twist & Lock fittings, a

FOLLOWING THE REGULATIONS

Last year England, Wales and Scotland all introduced tougher measures when it comes to the energy performance of homes across the UK. The requirements were introduced under Part L (Conservation of fuel and power), Part F (Ventilation) and Part O (Setting standards for overheating in new residential buildings) and are the biggest set of Building Regulation updates to impact the heating sector in over a decade.

The changes were introduced in England in June 2022. Since then, however, the industry has been in a grace period. During this period, projects have been able to continue under the old regulations as long as they began within 12 months of the new regulations coming into force. Now, almost a year down the line, heating engineers – whether they install oil, gas or renewables in either existing homes or new builds – need to ensure that they are familiar with the changes.

A step in the right direction

The updates to the Building Regulations are part of the Government’s ambitious goals and ongoing strategy to reduce carbon emissions. They serve as a stepping stone to the Future Homes Standard, which is due to come into force in 2025, and will mandate that all homes in the UK produce at least 75% less CO2 emissions relative to the previous 2013 version of the Part L approved document. This will mean that from 2025 onward, all newly built homes will be net-zero-ready and will not need retrofitting in the future.

Reaching a reduction of 75% less carbon emissions is an ambitious target, which is why the changes to Building Regulations Part L have been introduced in the interim. The aim is that they will

ease the transition between the old and new energy efficiency regulations and help the industry to achieve a 31% reduction of carbon emissions in new and existing homes prior to the Future Homes Standard coming into force.

Staying under the limit

Currently, a building’s energy performance can vary depending on resident behaviour (for example, opening windows when it’s too hot in the summer or when they cooking). From 15th June 2023, the thermal performance of a new building must see improvements in external wall U-values (down to 0.18W/m2K). The heating systems for such new builds will also have to be designed with a maximum flow temperature of 55°C or lower, therefore pointing towards lowtemperature, low carbon systems.

However, while previous versions of the Building Regulations only applied to new builds, the 2022 updates also cover some areas of existing homes. This means that newly installed or fully replaced wet heating systems in existing dwellings will also need to be designed to meet the needs of the dwelling at the same maximum flow temperature of 55°C or lower – much like the legislation for new builds. So, it is crucial that engineers understand the new regulations, even if they only work on retrofit projects.

To achieve this much lower temperature, the heat emitters in a home will need careful consideration and radiators may need to significantly increase in size, presenting space and aesthetic issues. For example, to provide 900 watts of heat output with a flow and return of 45°C/35°C, a double panel radiator would need to be 1,800mm L x 600mm H compared to 1,000mm L x 600mm H when using 75°C/65°C – which is almost double the size. This means that it is likely installers will need to explore alternative emitters that have been designed to run at 55°C, as laid out in the new regulations.

Heat emitters with a larger surface area, such as underfloor heating, are an ideal alternative as they can run at lower temperatures – between 33-55°C rather than 75°C. This also makes underfloor heating (UFH) ideal for use with low temperature boilers and renewables, such as heat pumps, as the demand it places on energy sources is significantly less. In fact, due to its ability to run at lower temperatures, UFH can perfectly accommodate the optimal coefficient of performance (COP) for heat pumps, which

is attained when they run at 35°C. However, there may be certain cases where it’s not possible to achieve a flow temperature of 55°C, either in properties where there is insufficient space for larger radiators, or where the existing distribution system is provided with higher temperature heat from a low carbon district heat network. Where this occurs, the new system will need to be designed to achieve the lowest flow temperature possible, whilst still meeting the heating needs of the property.

The tip of the iceberg

Although Part L contains major changes to the way heating systems are installed in new builds to gear up for the Future Homes Standard, many aspects of the new regulations will also have a large impact on how engineers design and install systems in refurbishment and retrofit projects.

The lower maximum temperature is one of the key elements of the Building Regulations that will have a direct impact on domestic installers across all projects – both new builds and existing homes. However, the regulations don’t stop there. Installers will also need to ensure that they are insulating pipework, conducting room-by-room heat loss calculations, and implementing heat zones and controls within a property – whether new or existing.

So, it is crucial for any professional operating in the industry to get a firm hand on the updated regulations ahead of the grace period drawing to a close in June of this year.

In addition, a 2GO hydraulic isolation system prevents accidental machine movements while a lift overload warning system on the 19C-1 PC ensures maximum stability and safety.

They are joined in this weight class by the 19C-1E – the world’s first electric mini excavator – with zero exhaust emissions at point of use and considerably quieter than a standard machine. Four lithium-ion batteries provide 20kWh of energy storage – enough for full working shift for the majority of mini excavator customers on a single charge. The machine has been a huge success, with the manufacturer celebrating production of its 1,000th 19C-1E in December 2022.

2.0-2.9 tonne Compact Excavators

The largest sub-3-tonne machines in the range are the 8025 ZTS and the 8026 CTS – offering customers zero or conventional tailswing to suit the application. Fully ROPS/TOPS compliant cab or canopy can be specified on either model. Both machines are powered by an 18.9kW Stage V engine which combines performance and fuel efficiency, delivering 97.9Nm of torque at just 1,0400rpm.

With transport weights of 2,578kg and 2,598kg respectively for canopy variants and 2,678kg and 2,698kg with cabs, both the 8025 ZTS and 8026 CTS models are light enough to tow behind a 3,500kg towing capacity vehicle. They also feature JCB’s unique 2GO safety system, fitted as standard, which requires the operator to press a secondary acknowledgement switch before the controls become active to avoid accidental operation.

High-strength track legs boast three-piece fabrication to maximise rigidity and improve track retention and for easy maintenance, there are a wide opening service access panels are supported with gas struts, to give greater access for daily checks.

CONVENTION! STAR ‘TRUCKING’

It’s a pick-up Jim but not as we know it…. not as we know it! Yes, Maxus has boldly gone where no other LCV manufacturer has gone before, certainly as far as the UK is concerned, with the introduction of its Double Cab T90EV. SAIC, the massive Chinese automotive enterprise, has impressive form in the electric van market, of course, with its eDeliver 3 and its bigger brother the eDeliver 9, which are available through Dublin-based importer, Harris Group. However, whilst these vehicles are clearly up against some pretty stiff competition, this pick-up offering is – for the time being at least – one of a kind.

The big question, of course, is are they doing it because they can or is there a genuine market for a vehicle which to all intents and purposes outwardly looks like any standard pick up but is clearly compromised by the same restrictions

currently facing all electric commercial vehicles? Namely limited range and reduced carrying and towing capacity? The reliance on a rear wheel drive only option at this stage will also raise eyebrows, although Maxus will argue with some justification that most pick-ups spend the majority of their life on the open road, not traversing the side of a mountain.

Nevertheless, an all-encompassing 4WD version of the TV90 is very much on the cards in the near future, says Maxus, who on past experience are not afraid to listen and then act upon feedback from potential customers. A case in point is the payload capacity, which on some earlier prototypes seen at the CV Show in 2022 were initially limited to a very

disappointing 740kg. I’m happy to report that this has now been upped to a much more respectable 1,000kg.

As far as options are concerned, right now it’s still a case of you pays your money – a not insignificant £50,000 (although there are some incentives to lighten the financial burden a little) and don’t really take your choice, because currently only one trim and one size are available. Optional extras are also limited, but it is possible to add a hard top for the load bay.

It has to be said that our inaugural voyage of discovery encompassing some 160 miles from the Harris HQ just outside Dublin to the magnificently appointed Ashford Castle on the far western side of

the Irish Republic was always going to be something of a challenge range wise. That’s given the predominance of highspeed toll roads stretched out before us as well as the obvious lack of recharging facilities in this very rural part of the Republic. And that was before the arrival of an unseasonal dousing of the white stuff, and below freezing temperatures, which further compromised our ability to complete the journey in one hit. Official figures put the range of the T90 EV at 205 miles but, on days like these, 150 is probably more realistic and, of course, our load consisted of nothing more than two well upholstered motoring journalists. Even Scotty himself would have been hard pressed to find us any more extra power on this occasion.

Like the eDeliver 9 medium sized van, the Maxus pick up shares the same battery combination comprising 150kW motor powered by an 88.5kW battery which suggests that, in actual driving performance terms, it is more than up to the job. At the same time fast charging is also possible, up to 80 per cent in around 45 minutes, in fact.

Power trip

Unlike the other EV’s we have driven recently, there is no discernible surge of power when you pull away, just an initial whirring sound to indicate that this is not your conventional LCV, although the driving experience is pretty straightforward. Pick-ups in general tend to be fairly bumpy affairs due to the nature of the uncompromising suspension

set up to cope with loading, but the even weight distribution of the batteries may actually help to keep the TV90 nicely settled on the open road, and the high winds on the more exposed elements of the route were not a problem.

There are three modes to choose from via a rotary dial – Normal, Eco and Power, which are engaged by pressing two buttons. It wouldn’t be a Far Eastern vehicle without some quirks, of course,

windscreen wipers and indicators are on the opposite side to pretty much any other vehicle we have ever driven. We never did quite crack that one on more than four hours of driving although in our defence the wipers did see a lot more action than normal.

The infotainment system is packed with features but somewhat slow and confusing for the uninitiated and, unusually, is slightly angled away from the driver. The interior is perfectly functional, all hardwearing fabrics and solid plastics suggesting that the target audience is very much business operators and tradespeople, rather than the weekend leisure warrior.

In keeping with all Maxus commercial vehicles, the new EV pick up comes with a five-year warranty. Emphasizing its total commitment to the full electrification of its complete commercial vehicle range the company are operating a £1,000 scrappage scheme and will throw in a free charging point at your home or workplace. As Doctor Spock himself so pointedly explained: “Change is after all the essential process of all existence.”

This column can’t seem to get away from water issues at the moment. Just when I was hoping to write about World War III and atom-bomb-proof air raid shelters – or something equally cheerful – the government comes up with its new “Plan for Water”.

Cynics might say this is due to the terrible publicity surrounding the fact that our drinking water is polluted with millions of tiny particles of microplastics, and our rivers and beaches are subjected to regular outpourings of raw sewage. Progress in the 21st Century, eh? Dontcha love it?

As I write this, the country has been subjected to several weeks of torrential downpours. The gutters are full and people are stepping over puddles on the pavements. But all this rainwater simply runs off into drains and rivers and eventually the sea. Don’t bet against a drought and a hosepipe ban this summer.

Britain hasn’t built a new reservoir since 1991 – that’s 32 years ago. During which time the population has grown by goodness knows how many million people, and our individual water use has increased exponentially as well. Power showers, garden irrigation systems, car washes –we can’t get enough of the stuff.

So what is the government response – instruct the shareholders of the privatised water companies to cough up for a few new reservoirs? Not a bit of it. The emphasis is to stop leaks from the creaking Victorian water supply network – a subject that I might have mentioned before.

The latest “Plan” mentions the unnecessary waste from internal WC cistern overflows –which the newspaper reporters wrongly blame on dual-flush cisterns.

Dual flushing has nothing to do with it, of course, it’s the hidden leakage from internal overflow pipes that is the problem. And even a traditional cistern can have an internal overflow pipe now, thanks to a ridiculous decision taken in the year 2000.

Overflow pipes used to be called “warning pipes”, and the idea was that the splashing of water onto the path or ground outside would alert the occupants to the problem, and allow the fault to be fixed.

But in 2000, the water industry declared that modern ball valves were so reliable that there was no longer any need for external warning pipes, and that in the rare event of a ball valve malfunction, the trickle of water down the back of the toilet bowl would be sufficient warning for the occupier to notice the problem. Well, that worked out well, didn’t it?

As I reported recently, even I – an experienced builder –didn’t notice that my downstairs loo was overflowing into the toilet bowl until Thames Water sent a man round to investigate my “unusual” water meter readings.

So it’s the power showers and the dual-flush toilets that are in the government’s sights for now. No new reservoirs. And every time we get torrential rain, the sewage can simply overflow into our rivers and onto our beaches. Lovely.

ON YOUR KNEES

You may have heard bursitis mentioned recently if you listen to the Professional Builder podcast. We discussed the condition – and how to prevent it –during a recent episode. So, what is it?

Bursitis is a condition that affects fluid filled sacs we have lying near our joints called bursa.

The bursae are thin, fluid filled sacs that sit between bones and tendon in the body. Their job is to act as a cushion and reduce friction between the surface of bones and soft tissues of the joints to help the joints move smoothly when moving. They are all around the body beside various joints. However, some are more prone to bursitis – in particular the bursae at the elbow or the knee.

Bursitis happens when these sacs become irritated. This causes them to swell with fluid and become inflamed. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on knee bursitis. Bursitis of the knee is particularly common in professionals such as tilers, joiners, carpet fitters and gardeners. This is because there are several bursae around the knee joints. These professionals spend a lot of time kneeling on hard surfaces or bending repeatedly, which puts pressure on the joint and can trigger the condition.

So, what are the symptoms?

The symptoms of knee bursitis are knee swelling, redness, tenderness and stiffness or difficulty in bending the knee. It is often painful and the swelling may be quite dramatic. People with bursitis are normally well with their symptoms, and do not have features such as a temperature, nausea or vomiting. If any of these extra features were present, it may be another condition causing the joint swelling, such as infection, and this would be managed differently and require medical assessment urgently.

The good news with bursitis is that the inflammation of the bursa in most cases will be self-limiting and improve with time.

The key thing to do is rest the knee joint and stop doing the triggering movement – eg kneeling or squatting. Using cold compresses and taking antiinflammatories may also help if they are suitable for you to take with no contraindications. If you are unsure of this, please check with your pharmacist before taking. In very few cases, bursitis can be a chronic issue. If this is the case, aspirating (removing the fluid from the bursa with a needle) may be tried, steroid injections may be given, or the bursa may need to be surgically removed, although this

The best way to prevent bursitis is to

use knee protection when performing jobs that involve kneeling, and to try and avoid long periods of bending or squatting. Kneepads can take the pressure off the bursa and the knee joint, so the initial damage does not occur. The use of knee protection not only helps to protect the knee joint, it is also a preventative measure from needing time off work should you have a nasty episode of bursitis. As the knee is a load bearing joint (it carries our body weight) it is important also to consider weight loss if needed. Losing weight can help knee problems improve significantly.

Bursitis is not normally a serious condition. It can be managed safely and generally settles down by itself. It can cause problems if recurrent or it leads to time off work. If you think you may have symptoms of bursitis but are unwell, or not sure that your swollen joint is bursitis, then please seek a medical assessment via your GP to rule out any other causes.
