HEALTH of the nation

This year has seen the 50th anniversary of a piece of legislation that marked a turning point in recognising the wellbeing of the workforce as a moral imperative. Since the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) was introduced, there have been dramatic falls in the number of fatal and non-fatal injuries, along with reductions in occupational health and work induced diseases.

Clearly more can always be done, and there’s certainly no call for complacency. The HSE’s own figures suggest that much of the room for improvement is still at the level of residential repair, maintenance and improvement works, for example, where the organisation still issues far too many enforcement notices.

The long-term implications of the risks of things like dust on respiratory illness, or musculoskeletal disorders are equally much better understood. At the same time, there are still far too many builders who are condemning their future selves to years of unnecessary pain and discomfort. The unnoticed creep of cumulative damage from not wearing a mask, failing to make use of an appropriate dust extractor, or routinely kneeling on hard surfaces without adequate protection, is not making the impression it should.

construction workers a day taking their own lives. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 45 and, with the construction sector still a male-dominated industry, its own suicide statistics will always be inflated by the that gender imbalance – but that doesn’t make the numbers any less shocking. Nor does it mean that the industry shouldn’t address the issue head on.

That’s exactly what organisations like Mates in Mind are doing, and you can read about the vital work that they’re undertaking in the mental health field in page 14 of this edition. Moreover, there are many good examples of large contractors with trained mental health first aiders in place, supported by the provision of regular talks on the issue.

“Even if we do not think of ourselves as sufferers all of us will have some level of mental health –good or bad, just as we experience varying levels of physical health during our lives”

Nonetheless, the downward direction of the statistics is clearly very welcome. It’s very easy to forget that behind every number there is a personal tragedy not just for an individual but for their family. The data that remains on a relentless upward curve, however, is workplace absence, with anxiety, stress and depression now counting for a significant proportion of cases. Mental health in the construction industry is a real issue, and one that should be recognised with its own health & safety rules and regulations.

The terrible toll in human life is well known, with an average of two

At the level of the local, jobbing trades, where that HR infrastructure will never exist, efforts to improve the situation have faced more stubborn resistance. Much of the problem is societal and comes down to nothing more than stigma. Many people who have attempted suicide will relate a troubled tale of a ruthless narrowing down of options until there’s only one possible path in sight. Providing a safe space where they can articulate their feelings can bring them back from the brink, and it is the people closest, including work colleagues, who are best-placed to provide that.

Even if we do not think of ourselves as sufferers all of us will have some level of mental health – good or bad, just as we experience varying levels of physical health in the course of our lives. Many more people than you think will actually experience potentially damaging levels of depression and anxiety or know somebody who has. Covid and the cost-ofliving crisis has swelled those ranks still further but the journey of recovery can begin by something as simple as a conversation.

BUDGET FOR IT

Industry leaders react to the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, commented: “The Chancellor’s decision to significantly increase employers’ National Insurance contributions will create major headaches for firms looking to take on staff at a time when the building industry is in desperate need of new workers. However, it is good that the Chancellor has shielded small companies by increasing Employment Allowance, as is the rise in the Apprenticeship wage which will help increase the appeal of a career in construction for young people.”

Richard Beresford, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Builders (NFB), said: “The 2024 Budget was always going

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

to be challenging due to the ongoing £22 billion black hole narrative. Nevertheless, it is positive to see the suspected fuel duty rise did not happen, especially as the construction industry is already paying considerably higher fuel costs after the last government cut their access to red diesel.

“We also welcome the £5 billion funding boost for affordable housing, commitment allowing councils to retain 100% of Right to Buy receipts and, the £3.4 billion for retrofitting.

“However, the Government’s target to deliver 1.5 million homes is now at a considerable risk due to the increase in Employer National Insurance contributions.

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) launches 2025 Master Builder Awards

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The Master Builder Awards are the Oscars of the building industry, showcasing the brilliant work that Master Builders carry out across the UK. I strongly encourage all FMB Master Builders to enter, and receive the recognition they deserve. If you’re not already a member, there is still time to join and be eligible for the awards.”

Master Builders who enter will automatically be in running to win the grand prize of an Isuzu D-Max Pick-up worth over £42,000, supplied by the Awards headline sponsor.

GREEN MACHINE

Industry leaders respond to Skills England report that says net zero transition will affect around one in five UK jobs

Griff Thomas, MD for GTEC & Heatly, both part of the United Living Group said: “At GTEC, we are ready to support the government in these ambitions, with our existing renewable upskill qualifications and the many new courses in development”

Paul Smith, MD for NIBE shared: “I hope that this report marks the start of more stable, standardised and focussed approach to meeting the UK’s skill requirements, an exciting chapter in our economic and environmental fortunes.”

Mark Krull, Director of Logic4training & LCL Awards concluded: “Overall, this report is another clear indication that the Labour government is focussed on a green and prosperous future for the UK. Let’s hope recommendations turn to action.”

This announcement will hinder the industry’s ability to take on and train new staff and support the next generation of skilled workers.”

Midlands housebuilder calls for more to be done to encourage girls and women to consider construction.

Sophie Horgan, director of Horgan Homes, is one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ female leaders in construction, spearheading the I Am A Housebuilder campaign launched by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for SME housebuilders. The campaign sees women wanting to go into construction matched with female mentors.

Sophie stressed the need to avoid a huge waste of potential talent. She added: “By far the biggest problem we have in recruiting women is that so many are still not aware that construction is a career path that is open to them. It is still assumed that building is something that boys do, and we really need everyone to work together to change that.”

THAT’s VAT!

HMRC is now issuing more and more of its heaviest fines for VAT errors

MIND THE GAP

UK is grappling with a critical shortage of skilled trades in its construction industry

Trade Direct Insurance has revealed that at least one in three construction firms are suffering from workforce shortages.

With key factors like an ageing workforce, reduced EU-born workers, and a declining number of apprenticeships, the sector faces unprecedented challenges.

workers needed in the UK to keep up with demand between last year and 2027 is 225,000.

HMRC is increasingly levying its heaviest penalties on VAT returns errors, with a 38% increase in the serious penalties issued for what it terms ‘deliberate’ errors in the last year (March 31 2024), says chartered accountants and business advisors Lubbock Fine.

‘Deliberate’ VAT errors refer to cases where HMRC believes the business made an active decision to illegally underpay VAT.

FOUR OF A KIND

SKY’S THE LIMIT

Construction output on the up

According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), monthly construction output is estimated to have increased by 0.4% in volume terms in August 2024. The increase in monthly output came from growth in new work (1.6%) as repair and maintenance fell by 1.0%.

At the sector level, five out of the nine sectors grew in August 2024; private housing new work specifically grew by 3.4%.

A four-day working week could increase construction turnover by £5.2 billion

This figure comes from the sales engagement experts at Sopro, who have analysed the data from the UK’s largest fourday working week trial in 2022. A shorter workweek for businesses in this industry would certainly pose a challenge, yet with the trial suggesting that employees with better work-life balance work more efficiently, it’s possible that this could counteract the shortfall.

BE A MATE

Employers have a duty of care to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees, including mental health/stress. However, providing mental health support for workers may not be easy for smaller employers as they do not have the resources (time, money or expertise) to provide this for themselves (as sole traders) or their employees.

Causes of mental ill-health

Our research1 on ‘Supporting the mental health of self-employed construction workers’ found that the key areas that contribute relatively frequently to feelings of stress and anxiety, are: workload is too high (42%), business partners/colleagues (37%), pressure of work (35%), family or relationship problems (33%), and financial problems and debt (32%). Other concerns included impact that work has on family life and worries about being hurt or injured at work.

This research was conducted prior to the cost-of-living crisis and as we are in the run up to the festive season, it is likely, therefore, that stress related to financial pressures is currently higher up the list of work-related stressors. It was

therefore good to read recently that the Department for Business and Trade has announced2 a ‘Crack down on late payments in major support package for small businesses’ because they cost SMEs ‘£22,000 a year with 56 million hours of lost productivity across the economy.’

(Health, Safety & Wellbeing Project Manager, Balfour Beatty) picked up on during the MAD Construction Summit

recently: “The change we need to see isn’t a change in how we tackle mental health, it’s a change in the way we do business as an industry. … We have a great opportunity to do something meaningful about this; to take qualitative feedback from the lived experience of boots on the ground in our supply chain, to work with academic colleagues to turn that feedback into actionable ideas and standards, and then to leverage the roles of clients, contractors and industry groups in getting those standards baked into the way this industry does business.”

Jim was referring to the University of Warwick research which the Tier 1 construction companies are funding into how they can best support their supply chains.

Although the research is yet to be published, Mates in Mind has already started to call on medium and large sized organisations to support the SMEs and sole traders within their supply chains so that they can access mental health training and resources. If you are contracted to work for a company that meets this criterion, please invite them to find out more about our Champions Programme.

Practical advice

The first and most important step is to learn how to spot the signs that you, a colleague, friend, or family member might be experiencing stress, anxiety or depression. Everyone is different, so not everyone will exhibit all or even some of the following signs, but it is a good starting point:

The second step, and this is something that many in the construction sector struggle with, is starting a conversation. Start by asking if the other person is okay. If they say ‘yeah, fine’, then ask again, ‘are you really okay?’ We need to normalise this type of conversation in order to overcome the stigma the persists around mental health and provide support to those in need. Remember, you are not expected to have all the answers. If the person you are speaking to acknowledges that they are experiencing mental ill-health, then listen and signpost them to further support if appropriate. Signposting can include a Mental Health First Aider, your Employee Assistance Programme or HR if you have them, a GP or NHS 111. Alternatively, anonymous support can be accessed through calling the Samaritans on 116 123, or by texting BEAMATE to 85258.

Our series of blogs on how to optimise your mental wellbeing, e.g., through sleep, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, worklife balance, finance and through building

a culture of prevention within your organisation, may be of interest. The series starts with an overview. Each subsequent blog provides helpful tips:

Sleep: try to avoid ‘blue light’, e.g., mobile, laptop, TV for an hour before bed to help you get to sleep:

Relaxation: try different types of relaxation, e.g., meditation, Pilates, deep breathing, positive thinking etc., to find what works for you:

Being active: according to the NHS, aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week, and to spread exercise evenly over the week:

Nutrition: try to avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks as an alternative to breakfast, as the ingredients will give you an initial ‘perk’, followed by a ‘crash’, leaving us tired and possibly irritable:

Work-life balance: try to ‘unplug’ from work when away from it – turn off work mobiles and/or emails: WWW.RDR.LINK/BBJ017

Finance: start by reading all of your statements (bank, credit cards, utilities etc.) so that you are fully appraised of your financial situation:

BUILDING ON SUCCESS

THE DIGITAL AGE

Joanna

challenges any builder to resist digital tools in 2025 at their peril.

If you’re not using digital tools to manage your building business, you’re not giving yourself a fighting chance in 2025. Running a small to medium-sized building company in the UK residential construction sector is no easy feat, especially in the current economic climate.

It’s currently a tough environment, but ambitious building firms can give themselves the best chance of success if they’re willing to adapt and make the most of digital tools. We see it with the building firms in the HBXL community, who are either adding to their software suite, upgrading to more featured versions, making sure they have the very latest product, and so on. They can see the difference software makes to their business and they’re ‘tooling up’. So, let’s dive into the current difficulties facing SME builders.

Professional estimating

One of the key ways builders can protect themselves is through accurate estimating. Misquoting on projects is a major reason for business failures, especially when profit margins are razor-thin. You need professional estimating software to remove the guesswork. You want software that draws on the latest material prices. You want inflation built-in. No underquoting eating into your profits. And no over-quoting that will surely price you out of contention. As we say here at HBXL: ‘you don’t make your money on site, you make it on your laptop’.

A professionally-written contract allows you to fairly review and amend the price of a job, nearer to its start date. This is particularly relevant to larger home extensions, lofts and new builds which might be scheduled 6-12 months ahead.

1 2 3

Impressing homeowners

The increased cost of living plus higher interest rates have put people off having work done as they can’t just ‘stick the project on the mortgage’ or get a low-rate loan for the work to be completed. It’s crucial to impress a smaller pool of potential clients from the outset. An impressive looking visual created using the right CAD software sets you apart from your competitors. You don’t even need to draw from scratch. Simply trace over the existing plans the customer has given you. Once completed you’ll have detailed 3D visualisations of the project. Draw from scratch and you can add ‘Design & Build’ to your name. The ability to produce plans yourself rather than going through an architect every time, will save you money when margins are already tight.

Job management

With pressures mounting, builders need to make sure their projects run like clockwork. But juggling multiple tasks, managing teams, handling

suppliers, and keeping track of finances can be overwhelming. Cloud-based Job and Task Management software for builders specifically, allows you to manage every aspect of a job from start to finish, all in one place. It keeps track of time schedules, material orders, the latest documents and much more. You can set tasks for everyone and monitor the outcomes –wherever you are. This level of organisation reduces the chance of errors, missed deadlines, or overspending. By staying on top of every element of a project, you can complete jobs more efficiently, improving your reputation and successfully locking in your profit.

Mental health

Mental health is an oftenoverlooked issue in the construction sector, but it’s a growing concern. Stress, long hours, cashflow, financial uncertainty, and the pressure to deliver, are all contributing factors.

When you manage a project with the help of accurate estimating, professional CAD designs, and streamlined job management, you’re less likely to encounter the kind of delays, mistakes, and miscommunications that can cause high levels of stress. Digital tools give you more control over your projects and allow you to focus on the bigger picture, rather than getting bogged down by dayto-day details.

Having a good contract, plus cashflow and stage payment profile for each job are also key. I strongly believe that you cannot subsidise a client’s project. If you let them off the cost of any part of the project you are literally bank-rolling the work. If you’ve been upfront from the outset, you’ll sleep easier.

The importance of adaptability

Flexibility is key. Businesses that are slow to adopt new ways of working or that cling to outdated methods risk falling behind. Inter-connected software is designed for flexibility. You should be using digital tools that allow you to scale to suit the size and complexity of your business. You want easy to use software that you can start seeing the benefits from immediately. The construction industry as a whole, is moving towards digital solutions, and builders who make the switch now will be better equipped to weather future storms.

4 5 6

Winning more business

As I’ve said, it’s all about gaining a competitive edge. You want to present clients with professional, accurate quotes, bring a client’s vision to life with attractive looking 3D models, and clear schedules. When you have a system in place that ensures every aspect of a job is handled smoothly, then clients notice. With the right job management software, you can even give your client access to their own dashboard to keep them in the

loop. You want to instil confidence with a depth of understanding that your competitors aren’t demonstrating.

HBXL Software provides the ammunition

You can’t afford to leave things to chance. The market is too competitive, and the risks are too high. Those who are willing to embrace digital tools are setting themselves up to do well in the current climate. HBXL’s estimating software

EstimatorXpress, CAD software

PlansXpress, job management software

BuildProjex, and our contracts software

ContractsXpert, are perfect for this. Importantly, they all ‘talk’ to each other, so project data is shared once across all tools, so for one thing, less time is spent on admin.

The construction industry is evolving, and builders need to evolve with it. Don’t underestimate the power of digital tools –they could be the key to your business’s survival and growth.

AWARD 2024 THE INNOVATION

BEST SUPPORTING ACT

Invented by Carl Harris, the Brick Bud featured in Professional Builder’s June issue this year. Carl, like many of our winners past, comes from the trades himself and began as a bricklaying apprentice over 30 years ago. Unfortunately, an in-construction wall collapsed on him, leaving long-lasting injuries. While this brick wall was being propped up by a piece of timber and it became clear to Carl that this type of propping wasn’t fit for purpose, despite being widespread in the industry.

THE

The next step for Carl was a huge amount of research, as he travelled up and down the country to sites where walls had collapsed, now with a bursting folder of image examples to show for it. The result of his endeavours is the Brick Bud –a reusable engineered GRP frame that transfers weight through to the floor, designed to prop brick walls during construction. Instead of an improvised solution (such as a piece of timber) the Brick Bud is engineered for the problem. It takes just a couple of minutes to assemble which can be done by one person.

From Carl’s estimations, the UK is losing around 35 million bricks a year to walls blowing down in high winds. It’s a figure based on his experience in the trade and time since visiting sites across the country. Carl states that the major problem with getting an exact figure is a distinct lack in reporting: “When a wall falls, that site manager doesn’t want health and safety

involved, the excessive paperwork, the reporting, the insurance premiums rising nor the mark on the site, the list goes on and on. I’ve had plenty of walls fall. I know as a bricklayer for 27 years and a site manager for the last five years what actually goes on on-site.”

Safety isn’t the only objective with the Brick Bud either, and the monetary savings could be huge too. Losing a wall of bricks on site isn’t free and the labour required to clear it all away and start again isn’t either, especially if there’s further damage to the surrounding areas or scaffolding.

Sustainability is, of course, always a consideration with new products now as well, and the Brick Bud is certainly delivering on these credentials in abundance. Walls lost don’t just represent a financial loss –all the CO2 required to create those bricks and get them shipped to site has gone to waste too.

All in all, the Brick Bud serves as a testament to the ingenuity of the trades. As our weather gets worse, with climate change and gale force winds increasing in their frequency, having a frame like this that can withstand the equivalent of 72mph winds is sure to come in handy. Not only could it save a lot of wasted money and hassle, but it might also just save a life or too.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES

Gavin Frost, owner of Frost Construction, discusses why presentation and professionalism are key to the company’s high rate of repeat business.

At Frost Construction, quality and customer care have always been our top priorities. For over 10 years we’ve built a reputation in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas for delivering quality extensions, conversions, and new builds. But what truly sets us apart from other builders is our unique approach, something our clients have come to appreciate and trust.

Unlike quite a few construction companies who subcontract out all work to other companies and focus solely on project management, we pride ourselves on having a close-knit network of highly skilled individual tradespeople. This core group covers all the trades, and they know the person who will be in after them, ensuring quality workmanship. Our

Professionalising the business

My path into construction is quite unusual as I did a degree in marketing before getting into the trade. It’s probably also why I think about the importance of presentation in how we run our business. First impressions matter – and in our area of the UK, where we’re fortunate to work with some very affluent customers – how we present ourselves can be just as important as the quality of our work.

With this in mind, about 18 months ago, we started using Build Aviator’s estimating services to improve how we present our estimates. Before using Build Aviator, our quotes were basic and not very appealing. We just exported them from our invoicing system. While they worked, they didn’t look great, and our clients found them hard to understand. We looked into other options and found

Build Aviator’s Executive package. This package stood out to us because it offered a professional, branded report. It wasn’t just about the numbers; it was about making those numbers easy to understand and visually attractive. We also worked with a graphic designer through Build Aviator to make the reports match our brand, including our company logo, images, social media links, and accreditations.

Each report also includes the client’s plans, which adds a nice professional touch, plus it’s tailored to the client’s needs. We find they don’t need to know every little detail, like how many screws we’ll use. What’s most important to them is the timeline and the costs at each stage of the project. To help, the report includes a timeline and detailed stage payments, which answer most of our clients’ questions.

Understanding our clients

My marketing background also means I think about who our customer is and, specifically, who the decision maker is.

When we started working with Build Aviator, we wanted to make sure the estimating report resonated with our audience, so we conducted a focus group, including previous clients, my

“By taking the time to really think about our customer base, and how we present ourselves, we’ve grown our business to include many high value, high-end projects but, moreover, to a point where we’ve got repeat customers.”

Building trust and comfort

We also find that our clients, especially those with young families, want to feel safe and comfortable with the people who will be working in their homes. This is another area where Build Aviator’s professional reports can help as by presenting ourselves professionally right from the quote stage, we can start to build that trust.

Before starting a project, our entire team also meets the client. We wear company uniforms, introduce ourselves, and explain that we’ll be there throughout

It’s crucial that we really take the time to think about our customer base and how we present ourselves, we’ve grown our business to include many high value, highend projects, but moreover, to a point where we’ve got repeat customers. Today, we’re proud that most of our new projects stem from repeat customers, which is a testament to the quality of our work and service.

TESTED& APPROVED

Hue Knew? for Certified Results ‘TESTED & APPROVED’

With so many paint options available on the market, it can be difficult for tradespeople to know which ones to choose. Here, Alexia Léonard, Brand Manager at Dulux Trade, explains more about the company’s rigorous product testing process and how it provides tradespeople with a range of paints they can trust.

The ‘Tested & Approved’ Process Dulux Trade recognises that tradespeople need reliable, high-quality paints and coatings to deliver the best results for their customers. To ensure that its products live up to professionals’ expectations, it uses the ‘Tested & Approved’ process.

In addition to rigorous laboratory tests that assess the product’s performance under controlled conditions, Dulux Trade also passes its products through decorator trials. To really put the paints through their paces, these are carried out in three stages:

1Assessments by a member of the internal Dulux panel of professional decorators – which is a blind test

2Assessments by a panel of external professional decorators – which is also a blind test

3Field trials that put the product to the test under external conditions

After each stage, feedback is collected and used to refine the product, ensuring it genuinely meets the needs of the trade by the time it gets to market. For

tradespeople, the ‘Tested & Approved’ seal of approval provides reassurance that the products deliver the top results they are looking for.

An introduction to the range

Numerous products from across the Dulux Trade range have been ‘Tested & Approved’ by professional decorators.

They include:

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt

As part of its reformulation in 2023, Dulux Trade Diamond Matt achieved the ‘Tested & Approved’ seal of approval. This means that the product genuinely delivers the

enhanced opacity and whiteness, and improved oil stain resistance promised on the tin.

This paint is a tough and cleanable emulsion that provides a smooth, uniform matt finish. Its unique Stain Repellent Technology makes it ideal for busy areas like hallways, as it resists stains and allows for easy cleaning, keeping walls looking pristine with minimal effort.

Its upgrade also made Dulux Trade Diamond Matt 99.9% VOC free1, meaning it has a lower carbon footprint and impact on indoor air quality compared to the previous version – helping professionals meet demand for more sustainable solutions.

Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt

Another product to be ‘Tested & Approved’ is Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt. The paint has been reformulated to enhance its sustainability benefits, whilst maintaining the same opacity, coverage and easy application that the previous formula was known for.

Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is an ideal everyday paint that offers a smooth, flat matt finish that is perfect for walls and ceilings. It helps to hide imperfections on less-than-perfect surfaces, providing a flawless look even on older or uneven walls, making it a versatile choice for various applications.

Desmond Cass runs D Cass & Son and has previously taken part in the ‘Tested & Approved’ process. He explained: “For me, painting and decorating is a really satisfying way to make people’s living environments more enjoyable. Choosing the right products is key to this so that the project you’re working on runs smoothly and to budget.

“As a Dulux Select Decorator, we put a two-year guarantee on all our work, so the product we use must be good. You can be as diligent and meticulous as you like when prepping a room for painting, but if the product that you use isn’t up to standard, it is all a bit pointless.

“The people who use paint daily understand it the best. That’s why I was more than happy to be part of Dulux Trade’s external testing panel, as it’s imperative the trade is involved with the product development process.

“Decorators tried a wide range of paints on several surfaces, providing feedback on their performance and finish. It was a blind testing, so we had no idea which products we were using. The process was thorough, so that we could get an idea of how the paints performed in real life scenarios.

“For tradespeople, it is so vital to have paints that have been tested by other professionals, which is why the ‘Tested & Approved’ seal of approval is so important. Having since used Dulux Trade Diamond Matt, I’m impressed with its opacity. It is beautiful to apply and you’re safe in the knowledge it will stand the test of time. Ultimately, tradespeople want quality at a fair price, and Dulux Trade delivers.”

Miles Newby, owner of Newby & Son (a family decorating business based in London) has been a decorator for over 30 years and has taken part in the ‘Tested & Approved’ process. He explained: “For decorators, the ‘Tested & Approved’ seal of approval is so important. Those in the trade use paint all day long and might look for factors that non-professionals may not catch onto.

“For example, professionals will look for efficiency to ensure they can complete projects in a timely manner. In addition, having been in the painting and decorating business for a long time, I have noticed there has been a shift in what professionals now look for, such as opting for water-based, low-VOC or VOC-free paints and it’s imperative that sustainable paint options still deliver good opacity, coverage and an excellent finish.”

1
“The ‘Tested & Approved’ logo on a paint can lets you know that professionals have tested the product, and it will stand the test of time.”

The Dulux Trade ‘Tested & Approved’ process ensures that products like Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt and Dulux Trade Diamond Matt meet the high standards required. It guarantees top-quality results that all tradespeople can trust.

TAPE IT EASY

Mathieu Nesme, Application Engineer at 3M explains why professional masking tapes should be in every tradesperson’s toolkit.

Masking tape is often an underappreciated tool in the world of decorating.

Many seasoned decorators, especially those in the trade for a long time, may feel that they don’t need tape, relying on experience and steady hands for precision. However, the evolving nature of modern paints, time pressures, and customer expectations mean that professional-quality masking tape, and in particular the right masking tape, can be indispensable.

Changing paints, changing needs

One reason why time-served decorators might feel they don’t need masking tape is due to the differences in the types of paints used today. Previously, oil-based paints were commonplace, and their slick consistency meant achieving neat, clean lines was more straightforward, with experienced decorators easily cutting in without masking tape. However, as environmental regulations led to a switch to lower-VOC water-based and acrylic paints, their consistency makes it harder to create sharp lines.

lines by hand takes skill and years of practice. Even then, slight wobbles or uneven edges can happen, leading to extra touch-ups and a less-than-perfect finish.

Professional quality tapes can help trades overcome the less workable nature of water-based paints and achieve a more defined edge.

Saving time

With tradespeople busier than ever, ways to save time are a must-have. While it might seem like an extra step to tape off areas before painting, the payoff comes during the painting process itself. Trades can work faster once the tape is in place

because you don’t have to worry about being overly cautious near edges and corners. You can roll or brush paint quickly, knowing the tape will protect surfaces from unwanted drips or smudges.

In many cases, trades can skip the brush altogether for detailed edges and use a roller right up to the tape line. This approach not only speeds up the job but also leaves a cleaner, more consistent finish. Additionally, modern masking tapes are designed to work with freshly painted surfaces. Some tapes can be applied just hours after painting, so you don’t have to wait long to move on to the next step of the job.

Professional finish

Another critical benefit of masking tape is its precision. Achieving perfectly straight

Likewise, no matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. Masking tape does more than create clean lines; it also protects nearby surfaces from drips and splatters. When working near trim, windows, floors, or other areas that you don’t want to paint, masking tape acts as a barrier.

With clients now expecting more polished and professional results, professional quality masking tapes can help trades meet those standards efficiently without spending hours trying to perfect every edge.

Choice of tape

Achieving this professional finish, however, is also down to the choice of tape, and not all masking tapes are created equal.

The key to choosing the right masking tape always begins with the substrate. Rougher surfaces require tapes with higher adhesion. On the other hand, smoother and recently painted surfaces require tapes with lower adhesion to prevent any damage when the tape is removed.

Leading manufacturers offer an extensive range of masking tapes to meet the varying demands of different surfaces. However, a critical point to note is that the colour of tapes can vary between brands. A green tape in one brand may not serve the same purpose as a green tape in another. Therefore, always check the packaging to ensure you choose the correct tape.

For smoother and recently painted substrates, delicate and sensitive surface tapes are specifically designed for this purpose, offering just enough adhesion to create a clean edge without damaging the paint beneath. These tapes are safe for use on surfaces such as painted plasterboard, walls, wood floors, vinylcoated wallpaper, veneers, and cabinets that have dried for as little as two hours.

unfinished hardwood, carpet, marble, slate, stone, cement and laminate. Rough surface tapes can also be used externally on brick and metal trims, for example, ensuring a clean finish even in outdoor conditions.

Finally, it’s important to remember to apply and remove the tape properly. Press the tape firmly and, after painting, remove it slowly at a 45 to 90-degree angle to avoid damaging the surface. If paint starts to pull up, score along the edge with a razor blade for a cleaner removal.

Professional masking tapes are more than just a basic supply – they are a tool

that saves time, enhances precision, and boosts the overall quality of your work. Even for seasoned tradespeople, modern materials and rising expectations make it an invaluable part of the job. With the right masking tape, you can work faster, deliver sharper results, and meet your clients’ high standards, ensuring every project runs smoothly and looks professional.

ON A ROLLER

Martin Spalenice, Head of Trade Sales at Okarno, looks at why

roller fillers are an effective

way of smoothing over existing walls and covering textured plaster.

Most refurbishment projects will have encountered their fair share of challenging walls and ceilings. Whether its hairline cracks, filling in gaps or smoothing over textured surfaces, fillers provide a really handy solution, creating a solid base for subsequent decorative work. More recently, this task has been made even easier and quicker by fillers that can be applied using a roller, such as Dalapro Roll Nova. These products create a smooth, professional finish that is 30 –40 per cent quicker to apply than other methods.

One of the key benefits of roller fillers is their versatility, meaning they can be used on a range of materials including plasterboard, concrete and even existing textured surfaces – much easier than trying to remove it.

Our roller filler has a drying time of just 8-hours on average. This aspect is particularly beneficial where construction projects are working to a tight deadline and need to maximise their time. For example, it can be applied last thing before you leave site in the late afternoon and be dry and ready the next morning. Once it has been rolled onto the surface it can be smoothed using a skimming blade and left to dry.

Ease of application

Applying ready-mixed roller fillers is a straightforward process that requires minimal effort. The smooth, creamy texture makes it easy to spread evenly across the surface, ensuring a consistent finish. The grey colour of our roller filler makes it very easy to see where it has been applied, ensuring full coverage. It is simply rolled straight onto the wall. Each tub of our roller filler covers an area of 12m2 at 1mm thickness and there is a handy calculation tool on our website that

lets you know how much you need.

It comes in a handy, pre-mixed 12-litre resealable tub that is available from merchants and stockists. Being supplied in re-sealable tubs creates a cost-effective solution because it can be stored for future use. It is always better to use premixed roller fillers that can be stored in this way because it is not only better for the environment – reduces the chances of mixing errors that may lead to material wastage – but means you always have the perfect consistency for application.

These kinds of roller fillers offer other environmental benefits too with Dalapro, which is made by a Saint Gobain company, using climate-neutral production as well as recycled packaging materials. The tub is also manufactured primarily from recycled plastic. Additionally, the product’s instructions provide guidance on the proper disposal of filler residues and empty containers, promoting responsible waste management practices.

Roller fillers are primarily designed for smoothing and prepping walls and ceilings, although this description covers a whole spectrum of applications. Here are a few examples:

Smoothing over textured surfaces

One of the key benefits of our roller filler is its ability to be used to smooth over existing textured surfaces. Applying several thin coats of the filler effectively covers and levels out the uneven surface, creating a smooth base for the final decorative treatment, saving a significant amount of time.

Targeted repairs

Roller fillers can be used for targeted repairs. Whether it’s filling in nail pops, repairing cracks or addressing other minor surface imperfections, they can help to restore a smooth, uniform appearance.

Smoothing concrete block walls

While roller fillers are primarily designed for use on plaster and plasterboard surfaces, they can be effectively applied to concrete. This makes it a versatile option for a range of projects from new builds to industrial or commercial spaces.

Larger cracks and gaps

For more substantial gaps and cracks, roller fillers can be used in conjunction with scrim tape or joint tape to provide a

reinforced and durable fill. This approach helps to avoid future cracking and ensures a long-lasting, stable surface for your decorative finishes.

The way forward

Repairing damaged walls and ceilings can often be a daunting task, fraught with challenges such as uneven surfaces, unsightly cracks and stubborn blemishes, all whilst, like most projects, you’re up against the clock. However, the emergence of roller fillers has transformed these tasks, providing a streamlined and efficient solution that delivers results, quickly.

A brush with GREATNESS

If you were to list all of the things that climate change could potentially impact a paint brush is unlikely to feature very prominently. Interestingly, that’s just what’s happened, and Hamilton has the solution.

Founded in 1776, the Hamilton brand has a heritage of nearly 250 years but has recently witnessed some of the biggest changes in its history. In 2023, the decorating tools expert launched a major rebrand. That’s delivered a much bolder visual presence in merchant stores with the amount of single use plastic used in the packaging vastly reduced. Painters, decorators and multi-skilled contractors can now trade up through the Hamilton portfolio, with three distinct ranges to choose from – For the Trade (which has replaced Performance), Prestige, and Perfection, each of which are colour coded for easy identification.

Visual augmentation software was used to design the packaging. What amounts to heat mapping for the eyes, it allows what each product should be used for to be communicated more effectively. The real break with the past, however,

came with the decision to discontinue the use of natural bristle. Thanks to a warming planet the quality and availability of the hog’s hair that has been used in brushes for millennia can no longer be guaranteed. The animals simply don’t need as much or as thick and long a coat and, with an increasing scarcity of the raw material, that also means that the price is only going one way.

synthetic brushes are just as good as natural bristle the manufacturer

distributed more than 7,000 individual and free samples of its Perfection CleanEdge™ to the trades in just one year – an initiative that successively won over the sceptics.

This is not the only reason for a company like Hamilton to continually improve upon its product range. Paints are also changing, with new formulae

that. With so many different paints available just one brush or roller is never going to cut it. Instead, specific solutions are required.

That’s why the CleanEdge™ brush is part of a Perfection range that also includes MaxStroke™. The former features firmer, shorter filaments and is designed for use with higher viscosity solutions where the brush can be more easily pushed and dragged through thicker paint, whether oil- or water-based. The MaxStroke™ is a super soft brush with outstanding paint pick up and a measured release, whilst the elimination of splaying increases your accuracy.

The key driver for the proliferation of new paints has been environmental considerations, but it’s also a factor in brushes. Every Hamilton wooden handle is FSC® Certified, for instance, and the longevity of the product is itself a positive sustainable attribute.

Trade loyalty

The manufacturer is a firm believer in developing relationships with its end users, providing a premium product for professional tradespeople who want to achieve a quality finish and it’s a loyalty which is reciprocated. The firm’s own research has revealed that more than two thirds of decorators consider Hamilton to be their brand of choice.

That same research also showed that, when using oil and solvent-based paints, more than 50 per cent of decorators had already made the switch to synthetic brushes because the natural alternative does not perform as well with many of the new types of paint. Again, the majority identified Hamilton as their preferred option.

If a product has a nickname amongst trade professionals, then it’s reached the level of industry institution and the ‘Hammy Green’ Perfection Sleeve enjoys that status. Indeed, with more than 321,000 of the 9in. sleeves manufactured at its Bromsgrove production facility in a 12-month period it’s clearly the trusted choice. It’s the higher density polyester mix in Hamilton rollers that makes for an even finish on smooth surfaces, whilst maintaining excellent levels of paint pickup, coverage and consistency.

In addition to the factory floor Professional Builder was also treated to a tour of the Hamilton laboratories, an experience which underscores the quality that is designed into the product. When using a roller the bane of any decorator is lint shedding onto the surface being decorated, or onto the paint tray. If these fibres are visible on the wall or ceiling it’s

going to detract from the finish, which is why Hamilton undertakes extensive testing to ensure that lint loss is not a problem with its products.

The analysis of its brushes in a purposebuilt lab is just as rigorous, including regular checks on what’s rolling off the production line. Brushes are tested for optimal paint pick-up. Durability is assessed in both new and used brushes with a tensile gauge that pulls the filaments from the resin, whilst microscopes view filaments in minute detail.

In the testing area the advantage of the firmer, shorter synthetic filaments of the CleanEdge™ are demonstrated, with a brush that can effortlessly manipulate even very thick paints for a flawless finish. The MaxStroke™’s longer, softer filaments will glide thinner water-based paints across a surface with no brush marks.

Through its long history Hamilton has advanced the decorating tools sector with some significant innovations. The Worcestershire-based company introduced the vulcanised rubber process to UK manufacturing and was the first to introduce a stainless-steel ferrule. Two and a half centuries since its inception it’s a tradition that is being proudly continued to this day.

ONTO A ‘SHUR’ THING

Jason Burns of Shurtape discusses why collaboration is key in R&D when producing products for the trades

Shurtape works closely with professionals when it comes to research and development. With an extensive portfolio of decorating products sold under our FrogTape and Duck Tape brands, not to mention our T-Rex and Kip Tapes, we are always sensitive to creating valuable products that are needed – products that bring something new to market.

We pride ourselves on our collaborative approach to new product development, working in partnership with professional decorators to truly understand the tools that they might need to support them in their field. This is about making their job easier, at the end of the day.

It is this approach that led the Shurtape team to recognising and understanding a need for two new products, which have just been launched in the UK. The first of these is a pro grade flashing and waterproofing tape and the other is new double-sided tape – perfect for decorators. The key to them both was realising the importance of different surfaces and textures to professional tradespeople, and duration of performance.

Sticking point

FrogTape Pro Grade Flashing and Waterproofing Tape has been launched to provide reliable weatherproof seals around windows and doors in residential and commercial projects. Our building professionals have highlighted the need to have a tape that is longer-lasting than those currently on the market, one that will work on a range of surfaces. Traditionally, professionals will use Butyl flashing tape –but this is not always as effective as desired.

In order to provide that longer-lasting grip, even on uneven surfaces, this tape has been created with high-performance ShurGRIP acrylic adhesive, using UV technology. This delivers several advantages over traditional Butyl flashing tape. It creates a stable adhesive system that won’t break down over time, instead creating a stronger bond. It also provides superior performance and conformability across a range of hot temperatures and climates and gives excellent adhesion to all building materials with no need for a primer, and it won’t react with caulks and sealants.

Available in three sizes, FrogTape Pro Grade Flashing and Waterproof Tape provides a waterproof seal and easily bends around building transitions, edges

and corners, with initial opportunity to reposition before sealing for a superior, durable bond after installation. What’s more, it is manufactured without solvents, thermal ovens, pollutants or greenhouse gasses, making it a more sustainable sealing option for builders.

It was through our work with professional decorators that led to another gap in the market and to develop FrogTape Containment Tape – a premium painter’s masking tape on one side, to stick to surfaces such as drywall, wood trim, glass, plastic and vinyl, with an aggressive adhesive on the other side which can adhere to polysheets and plastics.

Taking the lead

This product was created following discussion with professional builders and decorators who were working on multiroom jobs over longer lead times. They talked about longer-lasting solutions, that could help them protect different areas

while carrying out different building and decorating tasks. We realised that there was a real need for a tape that has very different adhesive properties on either side, in order to provide a truly secure and versatile seal and most importantly, to help save time on the job by containing dust, paint or fumes effectively for the duration needed – in a one-step solution. We started to look at how we could provide the specific adhesives necessary

for safely and swiftly securing different textures, over longer periods of time. This resulting tape is perfect for poly-sheeting, dropcloths, decorating sheets, tarps and other protective coverings. With secure adhesion for up to 21 days, the tape provides sealed protection for dust containment as well as spray painting, making it ideal for a range of interior tasks

including decorating, cleaning, sanding, mould remediation and asbestos removal. Hand-tearable and able to stick to smooth and uneven surfaces, the 36mm x 22.8m white tape removes quickly and easily with no residue.

Having the right tools for the job is a key part of delivering the best possible results when you are a tradesperson, as well as being highly skilled, of course. We enjoy good relationships with all our professional customers thanks to the investment we make in research and development.

Trust comes from a long-term investment in ensuring the quality of our service and product, the enjoyment of the whole customer service experience, and how we build customer relationships.

It’s about creating products with the professional in mind.

THE CONNECT ANSWER

SCANGRIP is lighting the way with a new concept in work lights

If you want to be sure you’re using a professional product built for the rigours of site use then a good place to start is an acknowledged specialist in the field. Given that it only manufactures work lights, SCANGRIP confidently commands that status and it’s a reality that is reflected in the functionality, durability and breadth of the range.

More than that, this Danish firm has identified some of the challenges tradespeople encounter on site when using this class of equipment and the answer is SCANGRIP CONNECT. “When it comes to LED work lights one of the main issues for builders is handling multiple batteries,” explains the company’s Content Marketing Specialist, Maria Lykke Bejlegaard Sørensen. “Not only does

CONNECT provide the freedom and flexiblity of cordless but, thanks to its unique CONNECTORS, it’s also compatible with 21 of the leading power tool brands’ batteries.”

Flexibility

Based on METABO’s cross-manufacturer Cordless Alliance System (CAS), the CONNECT concept facilitates the seamless transition of an 18 or 20V battery from your tool of choice to a SCANGRIP CONNECT work light. Builders will invariably buy into power tools from one company – as well as the same manufacturer’s batteries. With the industry’s leading names already on board, that means that these quality work lights are immediately accessible to each

and every trade – but that’s not the only thing that makes SCANGRIP shine out amongst its peers.

There’s obvious safety advantages of illuminating the workspace, but it’s worth shedding some light on some of the subtler benefits. You’ll be able to see your own work more clearly and produce a better finish. Your productivity will improve, allowing you to move onto the next job more quickly, and it will promote eye health. These are factors that hold true no matter what trade you ply but the sector is nothing if not diverse, and different tradespeople will demand their own solutions.

That’s why SCANGRIP has developed an unrivalled portfolio with lights that are designed for indoor and outdoor applications. Whether it’s something handheld or a large floodlight, and with

outputs ranging from 200 to 10,000 lumen, there’s a product for you. Run time’s no barrier either because, when using the 4,000 lumen NOVA 4 CONNECT, for example, you can enjoy uninterrupted illumination of up to 31 hours at 400 lumens. If it’s closer inspection work you’re involved in then consider the NOVA 2 CONNECT handheld model with up to 2,000 lumen and a slim and compact design. Both of these units are also dimmable in five easy steps.

Addressing the aforementioned demands of productivity is the TOWER COMPACT CONNECT. A quick release function allows a tripod that extends from 0.9 – 2 metres to be set up in seconds, so you can get the job done and move on. The two 360° flexible and turnable lampheads emit 2,500 lumen of light that can be directed to exactly where you need it. The TOWER 5 CONNECT continues the two lamphead theme with an output of 5,000 lumen.

Design features

In addition to the tripod options, lights in the range can be securely hung from scaffolding or rafters. There’s magnet brackets available, along with diffusers, and with POWER SUPPLY CONNECT you can easily access mains power. An IP65 rating protects against water and dust ingress, whilst the detail in the design on the likes of the NOVA 4 CONNECT includes a curved structure that affords a further level of defence for the LED against the inevitable knocks of a building site.

The innovation doesn’t stop there because the Multilight Body Connect concept introduces a whole new level of flexibility. Tradespeople will be immediately familiar with the basic power tool handle shape. On this can be secured four different work light heads depending on the application. The Multilight Body Connect can be handheld or secured to a surface via either a strap, hook or magnet. You can choose

Here’s some of the brands of power tools that are compatible with SCANGRIP CONNECT – and there’s more to come! AEG, Ampshare, Berner, Bosch, Bosch Green, Dewalt, Einhell, Fein, Festool, Flex, Hazet, Hikoki, Hilti, Ingersoll, Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee, Panasonic, Ridgid, SnapOn, and Würth

between SEARCH HEAD CONNECT for a 600 lumen searchlight. If it’s an inspection light you’re looking for then reach for the 750 lumen FLEX HEAD CONNECT. The AREA HEAD CONNECT provides 2,500 lumen of 360° light, and the FLOOD HEAD CONNECT offers 1,500 lumen. If it’s a larger area you need to illuminate then SCANGRIP CONNECT equally has that covered. The manufacturer’s VEGA CONNECT 2 and VEGA CONNECT 4 provide up to 2,000 and 4,000 lumen respectively. They can be tripod-mounted or positioned exactly where you need them via the integral stand. More powerful still, the light from the AREA 6 CONNECT and AREA 10 CONNECT is dispersed in a 360° span with 6,000 and 10,000 lumen respectively. If you only want to light half of the room or work area you can even switch to 180° dispersion. Crucially, these products emit a diffused light, which is non-blinding and a much pleasanter

experience for all the trades on site. There’s brains as well as power behind this brand because the SCANGRIP CONNECT solutions are equipped with a Battery Safety System including automatic discharge protection, overload protection and temperature surveillance. That means you can make use of your 18 or 20V power tool batteries again and again with the confidence that they won’t be damaged. If that’s not enough then you can connect to up to four lights via Bluetooth, allowing you to adjust to any of the five dimming settings, and turn them on and off all via a mobile device.

SCANGRIP has a long history of producing precision engineered products that stretches back as far as 1906. The company has been exclusively manufacturing work lights since 2008 and, since then, the bright ideas have just keep coming.

GET READY FOR WINTER WITH ACTIS INSULATION AND MEMBRANES

Combining an insulating breather membrane and a two-in-one reflective insulation with integrated vapour barrier is an ideal way for builders to ensure their roofing projects are winter ready. Pairing Actis’ Boost R Hybrid Roof with Eolis HC offers an easy to use and thermally extremely effective way of eliminating condensation and preventing moisture entering the building.

Boost R Hybrid Roof, used on the cold side of roofs, is quick and easy to install, helped by its self-adhesive lap. In an existing building it’s a case of removing the tiles and felt, laying it over the timber rafters, stapling it in place, then counter battening before replacing the tile battens and tiles.

extremely cost competitive. Eolis HC, which is twice as quick as using traditional alternatives, is applied on the warm side, with fewer steps required to achieve an impressive U-value and airtightness.

It is especially useful in shallow rafter scenarios where existing sarking felt is not being replaced and headroom is at a premium. Part of the reason for this, in addition to the thinness of the product, is because, for most UK locations, it doesn’t require the usual 25mm ventilated air gap to avoid condensation.

Using Eolis HC instead of PIR board means there’s no need to cut insulation to fit between each rafter. Instead, installers can just lay the product across the rafters on the inside (warm side) of the building,

Builders say Eolis HC is transforming their experience of insulating lofts and barn conversions

The thermal efficiency of Actis Boost’R Hybrid Roof insulating breather membrane plays a key role in helping builders comply with Part L regulations

BEAT THE WINTER CHILL

When the cold weather strikes, the right mix of materials and some well-chosen layers are the secret to staying warm whatever winter throws your way. Carhartt explains all.

The key to staying comfortable in cold conditions is the right combination of layers. The best materials will regulate your body temperature, keep moisture away from your skin and protect you from wind, rain and icy conditions. A wellplanned layering system typically consists of three layers: base, mid and outer. The base layer is your next-to-skin layer, responsible for moisture management. The mid layer provides insulation by trapping body heat. The outer layer should not only shield against wind, rain and snow but be tough and hold up to rough work site conditions.

The base layer sits directly against your skin and is important because it should wick sweat away from your body to keep you warm – damp clothing can make you feel colder in the winter. Cotton can make a good base layer in certain conditions as it is breathable and comfortable. As a natural fibre, it lets air circulate, preventing overheating, and its soft texture makes it gentle on the skin. While it’s not ideal for heavy sweating or

wet environments since it retains moisture, cotton can be a cost-effective and comfortable option if you’re working indoors or in less strenuous winter conditions. It also doesn’t build up static like synthetic fabrics, which can be beneficial in some work environments.

All in the layers

Cotton works best in winter however, when it is combined with synthetic materials like polyester. These materials make great alternatives to natural fibres and are often more budget friendly.

Polyester is lightweight, quick-drying and very good at moving moisture away from your skin so it is ideal for anyone working in cold, damp environments where sweat build-up could become an issue. The Carhartt Force™ Logo Graphic T-Shirt is made of 60% polyester and 40% cotton so it wicks away moisture but is kind to your skin. It incorporates Force™ technology which is engineered to fight sweat and dry fast, so you stay cool and comfortable 24/7.

Your mid-layer is all about trapping

heat but still needs some breathability. Two of the most popular materials for mid-layers are fleece and flannel, each with their own advantages.

Fleece is a synthetic material that is

working in winter

overalls. Flannel is a great mid-layer for winter workwear because it’s warm, soft and provides excellent insulation without being too bulky. Made from brushed cotton or wool, flannel traps heat but still allows your skin to breathe. Both these fabrics are really comfortable keeping you warm while letting you move unrestricted on the job. Carhartt’s Rugged Flex™ LongSleeve Plaid Shirt makes a great midlayer. It’s made from a comfortable stretch flannel with flexible Rugged Flex™ technology and comes with plenty of pockets for great storage.

The outer layer is your shield against the elements. It needs to protect you from bad weather while also being durable enough to withstand the demands of a

work site. Breathability is also important so that moisture can escape, preventing you from overheating.

A jacket with a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating is also a good option, as it will repel water and keep you dry during downpours. Carhartt’s Rain Defender™ technology makes water bead up and roll off your sweatshirt, jacket or overalls, so you won’t end up soaked to the skin. The Rain Defender™ Heavyweight Quarter Zip Sweatshirt makes a great outer layer when it’s not too chilly – it has an attached three-piece hood with adjustable draw cord and front hand warmer pockets with hidden media pocket so you can keep all your essentials close by.

When it’s particularly cold, an insulated

jacket with a tough outer shell (like canvas or nylon) is essential. Look for jackets with reinforced elbows and seams to ensure durability, and hoods that can be adjusted or removed for extra warmth. The Super Dux™ Insulated Traditional Coat is made from DWR Tech Canvas and is lightweight and warm without being bulky. It incorporates Rain Defender™ and Wind Fighter™ technology and comes with interior and exterior storm flaps with snap closure and inner sleeve rib knit storm cuffs to keep the cold at bay.

Work clothes take a beating, so you want materials that are tough and longlasting. Ripstop nylon or canvas are great for outer layers, as they are resistant to tears and abrasions. Reinforced areas, like knees and elbows, can add to the lifespan of your gear as you still need to move freely while staying warm. Materials with a bit of stretch, like those with Rugged Flex™, allow for better range of motion while keeping you comfortable. Carhartt’s steel pants are made from a tough stretch Ripstop and incorporate Rugged Flex™ which flexes and stretches as you move. They also come with Flex Cordura™ fabric secure kneepad pockets which conform to FprEN144041:2024 dimensions with cleanout openings so you can add pads to protect your knees.

Going in feet first

Don’t forget safety boots either. The basic safety level is SB, which protects against impacts up to 200 joules. S1-rated boots also have anti-static protection, resistance to fuel oil and energy absorption in the heel area, making them great for indoor work but unsuitable if you’re in wet conditions. If water is likely to be present, you’ll need S2 or S3 boots – these offer the same protection as S1, but S2 prevent water from being absorbed in the upper part of the boot while S3 boots are resistant to midsole penetration –essential if you’re working outdoors in wet conditions where there’s a possibility that sharp objects might pierce the sole.

Maintaining warmth on a job site is not just about comfort – it’s about safety and efficiency. Cold environments can slow down workers, leading to reduced productivity and increased risk of errors. Moreover, certain materials and tools are sensitive to cold temperatures, which can lead to delays or even damage. For instance, adhesives may not bond correctly and paints may not cure properly if the temperature is too low. In these scenarios, having a reliable heating solution can prevent costly setbacks.

Portable heaters are indispensable for their flexibility and ease of use. They can be easily moved around the site, providing targeted heating exactly where it’s needed. This mobility ensures that different areas of a site can be warmed as required. Additionally, portable heaters can be quickly deployed in emergency situations, such as unexpected cold snaps, making them a critical component of any site’s cold-weather toolkit.

THE HEAT IS ON

Darren Binns, National Sales Manager for Jefferson Tools looks at heaters that work as hard as you do out on site.

When selecting a heater for a job site, several factors need to be considered: the size of the area to be heated, the type of fuel or power available, and the specific requirements of the job. The heaters in the Jefferson Tools range cater to various needs, from compact electric models ideal for smaller spaces to powerful fuel-driven units capable of heating large areas.

Electric fan heaters

For smaller spaces or enclosed areas, electric fan heaters are an excellent choice. These heaters, such as the Jefferson PTC Electric Fan Heater, use PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) ceramic elements to produce consistent, odour-free heat. Their compact size and light weight make them highly portable and easy to position in tight spaces, while their 230V power supply means they can be plugged into standard site outlets.

These electric heaters are particularly useful in areas where fuel-powered heaters may not be suitable, such as in spaces with limited ventilation.

For larger, open spaces that require significant heat output, direct oil-fired space heaters are the go-to solution. The Jefferson Inferno Space Heater series provides robust heating power suitable for a variety of applications.

The Jefferson Inferno Space Heater series offers versatile and powerful heating solutions tailored to various needs: the JEFHTSPC060 delivers 60,000 BTU (18kW) of thermal power with a 19-litre fuel tank, providing up to 11 hours of continuous operation – ideal for medium-sized areas requiring consistent heat. The JEFHTSPC105 increases the

105,000 BTU (31kW) and features a 38-litre fuel tank for up to 13 hours of operation, along with durable steel construction and an integral fuel gauge for reliability in demanding environments.

The JEFHTSPC150, the largest in the series, offers an impressive 150,000 BTU (44kW) of heat output with a 49-litre fuel tank ensuring approximately 12 hours of endurance, designed for heavy-duty use on the most challenging sites with enhanced mobility provided by solid rubber wheels and a built-in trolley.

These space heaters are particularly effective in open, well-ventilated areas where rapid heat distribution is required. Their high power and large fuel tanks ensure that they can maintain warmth over extended periods without frequent refuelling.

Infrared heaters

Infrared heaters offer an efficient

environments where quick, targeted heating is needed, such as for drying materials or warming specific workstations. Infrared heaters are particularly advantageous when the goal is to maintain a warm work environment without significantly affecting the ambient air temperature, making them a smart choice for projects that require consistent heat over specific areas.

both workers and equipment. Portable heaters, whether electric, oil-fired, or infrared, offer versatile and efficient solutions to meet these needs. By selecting the right heater for the job, you can create a warm, safe, and productive environment that allows work to continue uninterrupted, no matter how low the temperature drops.

UP ON THE PROOF!

on the fixings and roofing materials which will help to winter proof your installations.

PBJames, with winter upon us, what are the most important fasteners and screws that contractors should use for outdoor projects?

James: Selecting the right fasteners is essential, especially when considering the colder months. For outdoor applications, our TEK Screws are an excellent choice. They feature a 1,500-hour Ruspert coating, which offers superior corrosion resistance, ensuring they perform well even under continuous exposure to harsh conditions like rain and frost. For timberto-steel connections, our CSK Self-Drilling Screws with wings provide a robust and efficient solution.

Here’s how they work: the wings on the screw create a slightly larger cavity in the timber as they drill through, which allows for some movement due to wind or the natural expansion and contraction from temperature changes. This is critical in

outdoor environments where materials can shift. Once the wings reach the metal layer, they snap off, ensuring that the screw engages properly with the steel, forming a secure and tight bond. This mechanism guarantees a long-lasting and stable connection, even when the structure is subject to the stresses of fluctuating weather conditions.

For metal-to-metal applications, our Hex Head Self-Drilling Screws are ideal. These screws, especially when combined with a galvanised bonded washer, provide an effective seal that prevents leaks and ensures structural integrity in adverse weather conditions.

PB How does the Ruspert® coating enhance the performance of these fixings in winter conditions?

James: Ruspert coating has a multi-layer protective barrier that delivers outstanding corrosion resistance, tested to withstand up to 1,500 hours of salt spray. This level of protection is crucial for outdoor installations that face constant exposure to moisture and temperature variations. By choosing fasteners with this coating, contractors can trust that their projects will be safeguarded against the harshest winter conditions.

PB For those working with timber structures, what specific

fasteners would you recommend to ensure durability throughout winter?

James: For timber projects, our Stainless Steel Performance Decking Screws are a top recommendation. Made from A2grade stainless steel, they offer exceptional corrosion resistance, perfect for wet and cold conditions. These screws feature a Type 17 point, which allows for easy penetration without splitting the timber, ensuring a strong and reliable hold. This is particularly important during winter when timber may expand and contract due to moisture.

PB What fixings would you recommend to ensure a secure, long-lasting timber fencing, especially in the harsh winter months?

James: Samac’s Service Class 3 Viper nail range is perfect for outdoor projects like timber fencing, where nails are exposed to adverse weather. This Service class of nail come in either Stainless steel or feature a hot-dipped galvanised coating, offering superior tolerance when coming into direct contact with harsh weather conditions and high corrosion resistance, which prevents rust and bleeding into the wood.

Viper nails annular ring shank also creates a strong bond that helps secure materials firmly, preventing loosening in high winds or under snow accumulation. The weather-resistant coating ensures

working in winter

that these fixings offer long-term protection, giving both contractors and homeowners peace of mind, especially when time and reliability are of the essence in winter.

While Viper’s service class 3 nails are ideal for outdoor timber fencing projects, the Viper Service class 1 and 2 range offers a variety of nails suited for different applications. From internal projects like framing, skirting, and packaging, to internal and external uses such as stud work, roof battening and joists, Viper nails provide a solution for every job.

PBYou’re known for fasteners, but what about the rest of your range and other roofing products?

James: Alongside our fasteners, we offer a comprehensive range of roofing products. Our Rooftec range includes products like Rooftec Flashing Tape and EPDM lead alternatives, which offer durable, weather-resistant solutions for all roofing projects. These are designed to provide reliable protection against water

PBLet’s talk about your roofing solutions – how does EPDM compare to traditional lead flashing, especially for winter applications?

James: EPDM lead alternatives are becoming increasingly popular for roofing projects, particularly in winter. They are lightweight, flexible, and easy to install, making them an ideal choice for contractors. Unlike traditional lead, which can corrode and requires skilled handling, EPDM offers UV resistance and adapts well to temperature fluctuations without cracking. This makes it an excellent

Samac’s Rooftec products, such as Rooftec Flex Plus, provide all the benefits of lead without the downsides. They are easy to apply, durable, and a more environmentally friendly option, offering long-term protection for all types of roofing projects.

PBWhat advice would you offer contractors who are new to using EPDM Lead alternatives?

James: Experienced roofing contractors will find EPDM lead alternatives straightforward and easy to work with, as it doesn’t require specialized tools or extensive training. Our Rooftec Flex Plus products are designed to be as troublefree as possible for the end user –simply peel, stick, and apply. The flexibility of EPDM allows it to adapt seamlessly to complex roof shapes, such as around chimneys and dormers, ensuring a complete seal. For contractors, this translates to less time spent on installation and a reduced risk of errors, guaranteeing durability and reliability throughout the winter.

If you’re familiar with sash windows of any vintage then you’ll know that they’re often accompanied by an ill wind. Their inherent draughtiness has occasioned the all-too common phenomenon of this class of window being sealed forever shut with a combination of mastic and paint. Mighton Products is, however, on a mission to liberate these windows by supplying tradespeople and homeowners with the latest innovations in draughtproofing hardware, and bring them up to a modern standards of energy efficiency.

There are countless sash windows out there that are in desperate need of weatherproofing and Mighton Products has all the solutions you’ll need.

ALL WEATHER FRIENDS

Mike Derham and the team at the company he founded are the acknowledged industry experts on all things sash window and that includes weather and draughtproofing. “In older

sash windows there are areas that will need to be draughtproofed,” explains the Mighton Products’ Chairman.

“With the demands of energy efficiency, and the cost of living, it’s a job that’s more important than ever and we provide a comprehensive weatherproofing range for just that purpose.”

So where to begin? The parting bead runs vertically along the window frame. It separates the two sashes and, given that in older windows it amounts to nothing more than a strip of timber, it rarely presents an effective seal when the window is shut. That means it will need to be removed and replaced with the perfect upgrade on the original – a Mighton

Products parting bead with fitted brushpile. Supplied in 5.5 and 8.5mm brush heights, and three materials – timber, wood plastic composite (WPC) and PVCu, each with a nylon brush, it doesn’t just keep out unwelcome draughts either. It is a testament to the Mighton Products attention to detail that its design features a weathervane construction. Included as standard across its Brushpile range, this fulfils the crucial purpose of shutting out moisture and rain, even in extreme weather conditions.

Parting ways

The parting bead is not the only weak point in a traditional sash window because the staff bead is equally vulnerable to draughty outside intrusion. This internal trim holds the sashes in place, and in older examples is, again, just a piece of timber, with little or no draughtproofing properties. Just as with the parting bead, Mighton’s modern solution is equipped with a nylon brushpile. It’s a component that’s available in a number of sizes and fitted into a plastic brush carrier so it can be easily slid out for painting. Again, the weathervane prevents water ingress, and there’s either a timber or wood plastic composite option.

Continuing our journey through the anatomy of a sash window, the meeting rail is a horizontal bar which features on the top of the bottom sash, and the bottom of the top sash. As the moniker implies the two will then come together when the window is closed. Thanks to the aforementioned parting bead running vertically around the sash there is,

however, always going to be a gap between the two meeting rails.

Mighton Products is currently working on some very innovative solution to further address the meeting rail issue. In the current portfolio it can point to a Meeting Rail Brushpile which is applied by an adhesive strip. The two brushpiles –one attached to the top sash and the other to the bottom – then interlock creating a weatherproof seal.

At this stage your weatherproofing work is almost done, with only a couple more areas to attend to. One of these is the top of the sash window, which is known as the head and needs to be adequately draughtproofed against the top sash when the window is shut. Mighton Products is a distributor of the market leading solutions from Aquamac and Q-LON. Once a suitable slot has been routed out of the top sash these push-fit Weatherseals can be installed.

Consisting of a polyurethane foam core surrounded by a weather and UV resistant polyethylene film, the deceptively simple but ingenious part of the design is a polypropylene insert. When in place, the Weatherseal forms a compression seal, preventing any elongation or shrinkage

Now we come to the sides of the sashes, where Carrier Brushpiles are the answer. Available in either a knock-in TCarrier or self-adhesive Flat Carrier version, as the name would suggest the former involves a joiner routing out the necessary slot and then inserting the TCarrier. The Flat Carrier can, by contrast, simply be stuck in place.

Added to all of the above is a product that can be used in a number of sash window components. The Ecobrush is a brushpile that benefits from an extremely powerful 3M grab adhesive and can be used at the meeting rail, the head, or the sill. It’s available in black, white and brown and a number of different widths and brush heights.

Proof positive

Given that Mike Derham is a former joiner it’s not surprising that the company he founded supplies solutions to issues that many of its competitors have not necessarily thought about. A draughtproof

box for the sash pulleys is one such example, for example, which again is sealed with Brushpile.

Weatherproofing is a significant part of the Mighton Products business – and it’s easy to see why. Sash windows have a timeless elegance and have been used in UK home construction for centuries. There are countless Georgian, Victorian and 20th century examples in desperate need of renovation to a standard that modern property owners now demand –and that means plenty of work for tradespeople into the bargain. Moreover, if a homeowner is already upgrading the glazing to double or even triple glazing then the Mighton Products weatherproofing range becomes an absolute pre-requisite.

Had enough mince pies? Then do some housekeeping, urges Quickslide’s Ade

The holidays are almost upon us when we will eat drink and be merry and then….sit around whilst Auntie Gladys and Uncle Fred fall asleep in front of The Great Escape…(why is that a Christmas movie?!)

We all need a few days off but if you’re like me, boredom soon kicks in, so here are some tips on how you can use that down time to set yourself up for the New Year and hit the ground running. Specifically, what can you do so your window and door experience is the best it could be for 2025?

Supplier review….

Have your existing suppliers done a good job in 2024? And shouldn’t you just have a look around anyway to see who is doing what out there? There is a large number of excellent window and door fabricators but there is a gulf between those at the top and the mediocre (and awful) others. How did your present door and window suppliers perform during the past year? Ask these three basic questions:

• Were lead times met?

• Did product quality meet your standards?

• How responsive was customer support?

A good supplier is a partner in your success, not just a place to buy from. Maybe it’s time to shop around, explore new partnerships, or renew and strengthen your existing ones. This will set you up to deliver the best for your customers in 2025.

And don’t be held back by perceived geographical problems either. As an example, at Quickslide we have our own large fleet that delivers to every corner of mainland UK. Usually quicker than local frame makers too!

Product Review…

PREPARE TO SUCCEED

say ‘yes!’ to Mr and Mrs Jones or, better still, offer them something even better. British homeowners love to be the first in the street with new twists such as colours and styles and garden doors and they will thank you for your advice.

Here’s some key things to look for:

Energy efficiency:  With rising energy costs, are you offering the best thermally efficient products?

Aesthetics:  Styles and finishes can change – do your customers still want anthracite grey, or are they moving towards a more classic look like Agate Grey? Or what about bespoke finishes to match a Farrow and Ball kitchen?

Innovation:  What new systems, such as smart window technologies or advanced glazing solutions, could give you a competitive edge? Smart solutions (all our PVCu casements have Kubu-built in sensors for security-ready) and ecofriendly options? (our casements have recycled core materials in the profile).

Systems review…

How do you run your business day to day? There is a wealth of installer/contractor business management systems out there, many of which are perfect even for the smaller operator. Once mastered they can speed up your operations from lead to sign off and most

importantly – payment! Many of these are operated on or linked to smart phones so you can update projects while on site or over a bacon roll, quote for work, buy materials and even take money.

Many suppliers nowadays (Quickslide included) offer a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) tool to repeat customers, to help them keep track of customer interactions, leads, and projects. Too big a leap? At least use online pricing and ordering. You can’t be on site and behind a desk requesting quotes from your supplier at the same time! Get yourself setup with online pricing and ordering so you can provide your customers with faster service than a competing builder.

you generating enough leads in 2024, let alone converting them? Consider these:

Social media presence: Is your company visible and engaging on platforms like Instagram or Facebook, where homeowners look for inspiration?

Website performance:  Is your website working hard enough to attract leads? Maybe it’s time to optimise it for mobile (more than 50% of our website visitors are from a mobile platform) or update your SEO strategy to target new markets.

Email marketing:  If you haven’t already, a simple email campaign during the festive season could be a great way to stay top of mind for your clients. And if this all sounds like snake oil to you, then get the help of someone to help you (ask a young person!).

Warranties…

Now is the time to make sure all your warranty paperwork is in order, both for past jobs and future ones. Keeping a record of warranties not only protects your customers, but it also builds trust. Clear communication about warranties can be a selling point for new clients, as they’ll know you stand by the quality of your work.

Customer reviews…

Many customers, and often those better heeled, will scrutinise Trustpilot and

others for the best people in their area, or after they have found and spoken to you. If you have confidence in your work, these are a godsend, Though warning! Some homeowner contributors can be a little crazy and even use it to get some money off (no! Surely not!!). But the cuckoos can usually be spotted and, after all, you have the facility to answer every review (and you should!).

Positive reviews are free marketing! Make sure you ask satisfied customers to leave a review. You should do everything to ensure your customers are happy but now and again one will slip through. It’s crucial to respond professionally and constructively. Use this time to evaluate your reviews and address any unresolved issues. A bad review can sometimes be an opportunity to show off your exceptional customer service.

All done? Have a great year! And maybe that last mince pie...

SEE THE UNSEEN

Will Jing of HIKMICRO explains why thermal imaging cameras have become a must-have tool for builders.

For builders working across repair, maintenance and improvement projects, staying ahead of the curve with new technology can make a big impact. One tool that’s becoming increasingly essential is the thermal imaging camera. Once considered a specialised and expensive device, these cameras have undergone a significant transformation – they’re now smaller, more affordable and even capable of plugging into smartphones. As they become more accessible, thermal imaging cameras are proving to be an invaluable asset, helping builders identify heat loss, insulation gaps and water leaks, as well as check electrical systems and heating efficiency. Whether you’re troubleshooting problems in older buildings or ensuring new installations are performing as intended, thermal imaging cameras can help you work smarter and more efficiently. These devices detect infrared radiation (heat) and translate it into visual data, allowing you to “see” where heat is being lost or accumulated.

This is particularly useful for identifying unseen issues behind walls, under floors or within roofs without invasive methods like removing panels or drilling holes. For example, finding a water leak hidden behind plasterboard walls can be tricky and time-consuming, often requiring invasive work. With a thermal imaging camera, you can quickly identify the cold

spot where the water is pooling, cutting down on the guesswork and the amount of material that needs to be removed to fix the problem.

One of the most common applications

significant energy loss, not only leading to higher heating costs but also to environmental inefficiencies. Thermal imaging can quickly pinpoint areas where heat is escaping, allowing builders to target repairs precisely rather than guessing where problems might lie. For example, when scanning a roof, you might see sections where the heat is concentrated – indicating a break in the insulation or poorly sealed joints. Instead of re-roofing an entire section, you can now isolate and repair the specific area, saving both time and resources.

Checking insulation in walls or ceilings is also straightforward with thermal imaging. Any inconsistency in the insulation can be easily identified by a thermal camera, revealing the cold spots where heat is seeping out. Whether it’s a retrofit or new build, this technology helps to ensure energy efficiency, providing clear visual evidence for builders and clients alike.

The biggest hurdle for most tradespeople has always been the cost of thermal imaging cameras. However, that’s no longer the case. Once seen as specialist equipment used only by surveyors or HVAC engineers, the technology is now much more affordable. Whether you’re a small builder working on domestic refurbishments or a larger contractor handling commercial properties, the investment in a thermal imaging device can quickly pay for itself in terms of time saved and the accuracy of repairs.

Added value

The ability to use thermal imaging cameras also adds value to your service offering. Clients increasingly expect tradespeople to adopt modern technology and being able to provide thermal images that highlight issues and present them with visual proof of where repairs are needed is an excellent way to show transparency in your work and give clients confidence that they are investing in the right fixes. One company might offer a basic report, but if another provides a report with thermal images showing hotspots, it gives clients more confidence that they are getting a thorough service. Environmental concerns shouldn’t be

“Thermal imaging cameras are no longer an expensive luxury – they’re a practical, affordable tool that can improve the efficiency and accuracy of your work.”

overlooked either. For builders working with environmentally conscious homeowners or businesses, using a thermal imaging camera demonstrates your commitment to energy efficiency. Identifying and addressing heat loss is a key part of reducing energy bills and carbon footprints, so using this technology can enhance your reputation as a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible professional.

HIKMICRO is a good example of a company that provides well-priced, portable thermal cameras for the trade. Its HIKMICRO ECO-V for instance, is a compact, user-friendly thermal camera which can quickly identify potential faults that take time or may be missed with traditional electrical testing methods. The camera’s ability to take both visual and thermal images saves time while its alarm function can be set to detect temperatures exceeding certain thresholds, further enhancing its diagnostic capabilities.

HIKMICRO’s recent additions, the Mini2 V2 and Mini2 Plus V2 thermal cameras, are also designed to be affordable, lightweight and easy to use. Both models are powered directly through a smartphone connection so there’s no need to worry about battery life and their

compact size makes them easy to carry between jobs.

The Mini2 V2 offers a wide-angle, focus-free lens, making it perfect for scanning large areas such as underfloor heating systems or walls for insulation issues, while the Mini2 Plus V2 includes a manually adjustable focus, allowing for more detailed inspections of specific components such as circuit boards or distant pipe fittings. Both models benefit from HIKMICRO’s SuperIR image enhancement technology, which delivers sharper, clearer visuals, improving the accuracy of thermal diagnostics.

Thermal imaging cameras are no longer an expensive luxury – they’re a practical, affordable tool that can improve the efficiency and accuracy of your work. Whether you’re identifying heat loss, checking insulation or diagnosing hidden issues in a building, this technology is now a vital part of a builder’s toolkit. With devices that plug into smartphones and deliver instant results, there’s never been a better time to invest in a thermal imaging camera for your business.

KNEES MUST

If you’re bending the knee on a regular basis you’re either a Premier League footballer or a builder. If you’re the latter you’ll definitely need Snickers Workwear’s AllroundWork Stretch Trousers with Capsulized Kneepads and Holster Pockets. PB’s Tibby Singh finds out more.

Snickers Workwear has a reputation for excellence and commitment to craftsmanship. It is a brand that most people are familiar with and distinguishable from its smart look. The company continually puts a lot into researching and developing garments that will benefit the trade and one of its latest launches is its AllroundWork Stretch Trousers with Capsulized Kneepads and Holster Pockets.

These are the world’s first work trousers with certified knee pads permanently welded into place. It’s an interesting concept, and I was actually looking forward to getting down on my knees to try them out.

As expected, the fitting always seems to be perfect and almost custom made, but I was wondering if the capsulized kneepads would cover the knees without any further adjustment? I can confirm they do, which is great and one less frustrating thing to worry about. This design also eliminates the issue of leaving your knee pads at home or in the van.

Another problem I’ve faced with the

open knee pocket trousers is they were good at collecting dust so, at the end of the day, they’d be filled with sawdust and more, adding extra weight and the need to clean them before washing them. So, just to confirm, when it comes to washing these trousers, they are machine washable.

Light on your knees

The trousers are light in weight with the integrated knee pads not being too noticeable. This doesn’t mean Snickers Workwear has compromised on durability because these trousers still feature CORDURA technology. They have the ripstop stretch panels and the reinforced holster pockets with reflective webbing loops and zipped compartments.

So, they still possess all the pockets that I always lose count of. This is actually an advantage, because when I’m working, I like to fill my pockets with all the tools for the job. It makes me more efficient and means I can get the job done quicker. The only problem is I can never remember which pocket I put my van keys in. They haven’t compromised on any

other pockets, such as the ones for the retractable knife, folding rule and – my favourite – the one for your small pencils. The number of times I’ve put my pencil in my holster pocket and not been able to find it is unbelievable. With this it allows you to slide the small pencil in without it getting lost, and it’s these small details that make a big difference.

As well as the integrated knee pads, these trousers also have an integrated belt. Again, if you ever forget your belt there’s a plan b and you don’t need to worry about looking around on site for a piece of wire from the sparkies or even cable ties –we’ve all been there at some point.

Just when I thought that Snickers Workwear trousers can’t be improved in any way, Snickers have done just that with its AllroundWork Stretch Trousers with Capsulized Kneepads and Holster Pockets. They really are a friend in ‘knees’.

NATURE CALLS

Scott Simpson, co-founder and chief technology officer of IndiNature, has introduced a real innovation in insulation

For the past two decades there has been nothing revolutionary about insulation materials – until now. Scotland-based IndiNature is leading the charge in introducing eco-friendly building materials which will support the decarbonisation of the construction sector.

In February this year the company became the first UK firm manufacturing industrial hemp insulation to be awarded a full agrément certificate from the British Board of Agrément (BBA). This means the hemp-based materials can now be used at scale in both new build and retrofit projects. It can also replace conventional mineral wool insulation in the majority of building projects.

The benefits to builders are many-fold:

• The material is soft and safe to handle making the installers job easier. It can be easily cut to size using a special saw. Insulation batts provide simple friction fit against timber or masonry and are more rigid to prevent slumping.

• We are working on making the hemp materials price competitive with conventional insulation. As volume sales grow the price will become more affordable.

• Hemp has a net capture of carbon in contrast to other insulation materials which produce large amounts of carbon as a by-product of their production process.

• The material is warm in winter; hemp

has great thermal performance reducing heat loss.

• Hemp is cool in summer; the material reduces the risk of buildings overheating by passively storing and releasing excess heat keeping temperatures even all year long.

• IndiNature products can be reused at the end of life or reprocessed into the same products thereby reducing waste. Moreover, all the hemp and flax used is produced in UK farms supporting local jobs and reducing carbon miles.

droplets, the product has none showing a Class d0.

• The material is particularly suitable for historic and listed buildings as it keeps structures dry.

• Hemp has excellent sound dampening properties achieving 40db sound reduction in internal partition walls.

Working closely with the building sector, the hemp-based material meets all needs such as ease of use, installation, safety, and environmentally friendliness. The IndiNature journey began in 2016 when

ABOUT INDINATURE

Scott Simpson is a co-founder of IndiNature and current chief technical officer. Prior to IndiNature he was working in grassroots community development in the UK, working in neighbourhoods with poor social housing conditions. He wanted to learn how to make buildings healthier and more affordable to heat, so he completed an MSc in Architecture (Advanced Environmental and Energy Systems) and focused on lab-based research into natural building materials. He put theory to practice by rebuilding his family home with them in Scotland, using skills gained as a housebuilder in Vancouver.

performance benefits over conventional materials. Using his family home as a living case study he used the best natural materials available to rebuild and extend it. The three-bed home now has energy bills 25% less than average and temperature and humidity are even all year around offering a more comfortable and healthy environment.

One major issue was the availability of

developing hemp-based insulation in the UK. To build the IndiNature Mill in Jedburgh, and bring the products to market, has involved raising £10m of investment over the past eight years.

IndiNature can now produce its hempbased batts at scale to be used as a simple alternative to conventional mineral wool insulation in construction projects, such as open timber frame studs, roofs

plans are in the pipeline to have hemp grown in Scotland to further reduce the environmental impact. Hemp was a traditional crop in the UK and is farmed extensively in Europe. It is a fast-growing annual crop making it highly renewable and sustainable.

IndiNature products are now available direct from the mill as well as merchants and distributors across the UK.

HIGH IN FIBRE

Neil Turner, (UK) Technical Manager at Ecological Building Systems, looks at why natural insulation is becoming an essential part of modern homes.

Natural insulation materials originate from renewable resources, such as wood fibres, sheep wool and jute. They have a significantly lower carbon footprint and a higher sequestered biogenic carbon content compared to conventional insulation options like foam or mineral wool.

Demand for sustainable building materials means many in the building industry are looking at natural fibre insulation as a preferred alternative to other insulation materials, such as mineral wool, polystyrene (EPS & XPS) rigid polyurethane (PUR/PIR) and phenolic foam.

associated with natural insulation

materials, which are becoming more well known. These include low thermal diffusivity (reduction in summer overheating, due to a combination of high specific heat capacity, high density and reasonable thermal conductivity), airborne acoustic noise reduction and moisture diffusion openness (breathability). In addition, natural insulation products have better carbon profiles than many other insulation materials.

As well as these performance benefits, natural insulation materials, such as Gutex

insulation can also often be recycled at the end of life and when these impacts are taken into account (Section D of the life cycle assessment) then Gutex Multitherm has a better than carbon zero GWP rating of -91.94kg CO2 equivalents/m3

Thermal regulation

The thermal mass and humidity-regulating properties of natural insulation can play a crucial role in maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures and reducing the risk of moisture-related issues in a home.

Compared to many other insulation materials, natural fibre insulation has a high specific heat capacity, which when combined with a relatively high density and reasonable thermal conductivity allows the absorption and storage of large amounts of thermal energy. This thermal mass can play a crucial role in mitigating

overheating during the summer months, providing a more stable and comfortable indoor environment.

By choosing an insulation material which is naturally able to store large amounts of thermal energy, occupants of a house can benefit from a high level of comfort all year round. Natural wood fibre insulation boards can significantly reduce heat loss in a building during the winter and heat gain during the summer, therefore reducing energy bills. Natural insulation materials also help with acoustics, by absorbing sound waves, which reduces the transmission of noise between different spaces within a building.

Breathability

One of the main characteristics of natural insulation materials is their breathability (low moisture vapour diffusion resistance) and high moisture sorption/desorption properties. This provides more flexibility in designing building elements as there is no requirement for highly moisture vapour resistant barriers. It also prevents the build-up of moisture within the building envelope, reducing the risk of interstitial condensation, mould, rot and other related problems.

In addition to being moisture vapour diffusion open, natural fibre insulation products tend to have a high degree of hygroscopicity. This allows moisture vapour to be absorbed, distributed, stored and then harmlessly released with changing indoor and outdoor climate conditions. This absorption and release of moisture by the insulation also helps regulate temperature fluctuations, therefore providing a more comfortable living or working space.

In terms of design, this breathability allows for greater design flexibility as there is no need to use high vapour resistant Vapour Control Layers throughout the building. In historic renovations or when upgrading thermal performance in solid masonry walls, use of natural insulation can prevent issues with moisture, condensation and mould. They work particularly well with limebased mortar products to maintain breathability throughout the wall structure.

For modern builds, including Passive

House projects, natural insulation materials help buildings to achieve a high level of energy efficiency while maintaining a healthy indoor environment and improving the carbon profile of the building. For that reason, a growing number of Passive House constructions use natural wood fibre boards and airtight racking systems to ensure optimal thermal performance, combined with moisture management within the building.

The installation process for natural insulation is similar to that of other insulation products, with no need for specialised protective gear or complex techniques, therefore reducing health and safety issues on site. Ensuring airtightness can be achieved by sealing joints, using appropriate tapes and sealants. Insulation suppliers should be able to advise on this aspect of the installation.

Fire safety

When it comes to fire safety, natural fibre insulation has clear benefits. Its products char on exposure to flame, which

provides protection to the structure and slows down the penetration of heat and flame. It is possible to achieve an REI rating of up to 90 minutes tested from inside and outside according to EN135012 (BS476 Part 20-22).

A sustainable solution

While it is true that in some cases the initial cost of natural insulation may be higher than some synthetic options, this perspective often fails to consider the long-term benefits and the potential cost savings associated with these materials. The enhanced thermal and moisture management properties of natural insulation can lead to reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance costs over the lifetime of the building. When choosing insulation materials, it is important to take into account factors such as heat capacity, breathability, thermal performance acoustics, fire safety and environmental impact.

The increasing demand for more sustainable insulation materials means there is now an insulation material available for most applications and to suit a wide variety of projects.

SprayCork natural cork coating is an innovative insulation and rendering solution. James Erskine, Sales Manager at CorkSol, discusses the benefits of the product, the installation process, and the support that the company provides to approved applicators.

WHAT A CORKER!

The UK house market has evolved considerably over recent years. Many are taking on restoring properties, some are searching for solutions to reduce energy usage, whilst others are looking at protecting their new build homes against the ever-changing UK climate. Therefore, many tradespeople are adding more services to their offering in order to cater to customers.

SprayCork is a sustainable, breathable wall coating that can be used on interior and exterior walls as an insulating solution or outside render. Exclusively supplied by CorkSol UK, the company has seen a noticeable rise in applications of the product because of its host of benefits. Highly insulating (reduces heat loss by up to 30%), a protectant against damp and mould, and exceptionally durable against the elements, SprayCork is a solution to many problems faced by property owners.

To date, almost 10 million UK

structures are equipped with poor insulation after receiving an EPC score of a C or below. Because of this, these buildings experience higher levels of heat loss, ultimately leading to excessive energy consumption, which is further detrimental during the current cost of living crisis. Moreover, 55% of UK homeowners have also reported issues with substandard indoor air quality due to damp and mould within their homes because of poor ventilation. The innovative CorkSol solution helps minimise these issues with owners seeing results within the months to follow the completion of the project.

Options aplenty

Despite all these benefits contributing to a more sustainable building and better livelihood for those living there, there are many homeowners who prioritise the look of their home. This natural cork coating is available in 28 fade-resistant colours

allowing approved applicators to offer clients trending tones that will give the building a contemporary makeover whilst improving the overall standard of it. In addition to its wide colour range, it is also easily repaired if the new render cracks, causing little to no disruption to the homeowners’ daily life.

These benefits of SprayCork aren’t, however, limited to the product itself but are also favourable for its approved applicators. Becoming part of the independent network enables tradespeople to offer a wider variety of services which also increases their opportunities as the same material can be used in both interior and external projects, often leading to recurring customers once they see the benefits.

The material is applied by adding the product to the spray machine, coating the wall in horizontal motions, layering up until sufficient coverage is achieved. This process can be completed in a time efficient manner, allowing applicators to have increased amounts of downtime to help reach further clients, maximising profit. It also means that training from the experts at CorkSol can be completed within one day. During the onboarding process, new applicators learn about the opportunities cork gives them and clients, whilst also understanding the technique needed to complete projects to an exceptional standard.

As well as being the exclusive supplier of the product, CorkSol has created a network of approved applicators across the UK via QualiCork providing a platform with continued support for applicators even after the training day. Having this platform on hand enables applicators to educate themselves and potential clients who are making eco-conscious decisions and are in need of a solution for their homes.

New leads

To complement the support received from attending the training course, members of the QualiCork Network can receive sales leads through the CorkSol website as well as access to other opportunities to grow their own businesses. Having access to these leads enables a constant, steady stream of potential clients to come to the business for quotations, while reducing

marketing or advertising costs.

Becoming a member of the Independent Applicator Network enables tradespeople to expand their repertoire, offering a solution that will combat many issues found in UK homes. They have access to the profit calculator where they can transform their business, minimise labour costs, whilst maximising what they can earn. Despite there being a long list of advantages for applicators, the most important one is arguably the service and

product they are able to provide clients. Whilst they are receiving a long-term improvement to their health, and energy costs, you are enhancing your livelihood.

The Government is aiming to triple the amount of solar power by 2030, and this will turbo charge demand for roof top installations across the UK. Builders must be mindful of four key areas when embarking on the practical on-site steps involved in a solar PV installation project. Doing so will ensure the delivery of a high performing, compliant, and protected renewable technology solution that provides access to sustainable and cheaper energy for households.

Follow the rules and regulations

Generating sustainable and inexpensive power via a solar panel solution on the roof is one of the prime attractions driving solar take up among consumers and creating additional business building opportunity for the trade.

In addition, another key factor is the ability for households to sell ‘excess’ electricity back to the national grid thanks to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme, which pays for excess electricity generated by renewable sources such as solar panels.

However, underpinning this is the requirement to follow all the necessary regulations for a grid-connected system. This necessitates gaining the permissions and notifications to the National Grid for a solar PV system if the solution is over 3.68kW.

In addition, whilst there is currently no legal obligation that a solar PV connection is undertaken by a MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) approved installer, this is a requirement if the homeowner wishes to take advantage of schemes such as SEG.

As a result, there will be a requirement to complete the paperwork that ensures work adheres to both MCS standards and local authority regulations. A list of MCS accredited installers is available at WWW.RDR.LINK/BBJ112

NICE ONE ‘SUN’

Team up

Builders looking to add solar PV installation to their service offering can collaborate with an MCS-certified installer. Such accredited installers can undertake the required electrical connections and ensure compliance with the prevailing National Grid regulations. Additionally, MCS installers can also provide expert insight on the best inverter and battery storage solution to match the energy usage patterns of the customer.

From a location perspective, batteries should be positioned outside if possible but ensure that all safety guidelines are followed to prevent potential fire hazards.

Testing and setting out

As the installation process commences, contractors should always test each array panel individually prior to roof mounting to ensure they are working correctly. They also need to record the panel serial numbers for certification and warranty purposes.

Setting out the panels is also a key component of a successful installation project. Ensure proper alignment of the initial panel as this critical action will lead to all subsequent panels being positioned correctly. Failing to adopt this important first step can result in both aesthetic and panel functional issues that may have to be remedied later.

System protection

With solar PV specified for both new home developments as well as an increasing number of retrofit projects on older properties, it is important to understand some differences when it comes to warranties. Retrofitting a solar PV system may offer limited warranty protection because of the presence of older roofing materials. The Marley Roof System offers a 25-year, 80% efficiency guarantee and, as the panels act as a roof covering, the system also carries a 60year expected panel lifespan.

‘STROCKS’ OF GENIUS

It’s clay time with the handmade brick specialist, H.G. Matthews, natural building blocks

The rate at which we are using up the earth’s resources is accelerating at a worrying pace. We’re currently consuming 35 billion tonnes of sand, gravel and crushed rock for building, for example, a figure which is projected to reach 55 billion by 2060. At the same time, the cement industry is responsible for 8% of the world’s CO2 emissions. This has long been recognised as an unsustainable path, and the need to change course is now pressing. One handmade brick manufacturer thinks it’s done just that – and the solution is literally right beneath our very feet.

“Our approach has been two-fold”, enthuses Jim Matthews of Cheshambased H.G. Matthews. “We want to champion low carbon production techniques as well as sustainability in material resources. If you consider the latter point first what’s often not considered is the amount of virgin material used in construction.”

The H.G. Matthews answer is actually a return to a building material and technique that stretches back millennia. Indeed, the brick expert’s recipe can be found at the dawn of civilisation in the mud bricks of ancient Mesopotamia. Made from unfired clay, and wheat straw that acts as a binder, H.G. Matthews’ Strocks are loadbearing natural building blocks that achieve a rating of 1.5Nm/mm2 which is more than enough for the loads in a one or two-storey property.

In the south of England clay is a ubiquitous substance but that doesn’t

mean that all of it can be made into bricks. Only certain clays can cope with the stresses of being fired to over 1,000˚C but, when you’re eliminating the firing process entirely, any clay will do the job and you are presented with a superabundant material. That means the waste clay that H.G. Matthews routinely digs through to reach the consistency required for brick-making is now a useable commodity.

Conserving energy

Not only that but, because it’s unfired, Strocks are using significantly lower levels of energy in their manufacture. Rainwater collected from the H.G. Matthews roof is

breathable, thereby helping to regulate internal humidity in a home.

This then brings us to another ancient technique that suddenly finds a place in the modern world. If you’re digging out the foundations for a building, why landfill all that clay, and pay for the privilege? Instead, good use can be made of that earth by making blocks out of it, thereby effectively erecting a structure from the very ground on which it stands. This is exactly what Jim Matthews and his team have done and the results are impressive.

In order to demonstrate just what can be achieved with natural materials, H.G. Matthews was involved in the construction of a nursery close to its Buckinghamshire brickworks. Strocks were used in the inner cavity wall with wood-fired handmade bricks and lime

Jim Matthews of H.G. Matthews explains the strocks natural building blocks manufacturing process

mortar on the outer leaf, and hemp insulation in between. Glulam beams provided the structural integrity, and the building was finished with clay plasters and paints.

Since this project Strocks have also been used in a variety of applications, including the Apex Building for the Tribeca Development, King’s Cross, London.

Once a building ultimately reaches the end of its useful life that’s not the end of the story either. A mix of clay, sand and straw can easily be reused, which makes an unfired block ideal for recycling.

Strocks are natural building blocks that can be used in the inner skin of an internal wall – where they will replace concrete blocks – or for outer walls that can then be clad in a sustainable building board. On the inside, a clay or lime plaster can be utilised, covered with a breathable paint. It’s easy to chase into the blocks with a multi-tool and fixings can be screwed into them in much the same way you would timber.

“As far as we’re concerned the answer to producing a sustainable building block has been hiding in plain sight,” concludes Jim. “It’s the clay that’s all around us and

greatly reduced carbon footprint in manufacture, whilst there are real benefits for the occupiers of properties built with Strocks, particularly with regards to the moderation of moisture levels. In addition, the blocks demonstrate a very high thermal mass and density, which offers excellent insulative properties, keeping bills down in the winter. They’ll even absorb the harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are found in modern homes. Put simply, clay and straw as building materials are still as good as it gets.”

Garry Gregory, packed products director at Tarmac provides insight into the industry’s perspective on sustainability and the five key pillars that underpin it.

Production

Sustainable production of cement involves a multifaceted approach aimed at minimising environmental impact across the entire process. It encompasses implementing energy-efficient technologies, optimising raw material extraction, minimising waste and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, embracing alternative fuels such as biomass, waste-derived fuels or electricity throughout the production stages, not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also contributes to lower carbon emissions.

At Tarmac, we are optimising our manufacturing at each site so we can make improvements where required. This includes introducing alternative fuels to remove the need for fossil fuels during the production stage.

In 2022, Tarmac introduced the UK’s first battery electric mixer truck as part of our commitment to net zero. As Tarmac procures 100% of its site electricity from clean energy sources – wind, solar and hydro power only – the new vehicle operates as a carbon neutral solution. Since then, we’ve continued to build on this. In fact, by the end of 2024, Tarmac will be on track to operate the largest electric HGV fleet in the UK construction sector.

AHEAD OF THE PACK

Process

The concrete and cement sector currently accounts for seven per cent of global carbon emissions, predominantly from the chemical reaction that creates cement and the energy required to do so. However, the industry must also look at the bigger picture. Applying automation, reducing physical administration and optimising digital solutions will substantially reduce the carbon footprint of product collections and deliveries in a way that is streamlined, robust and easy to use.

For instance, our roll out of electronic payments by customers removes manual intervention and taking paper out of the process and electronic proof of delivery (EPOD) is reducing the number of vehicle movements and time spent on site. In turn, this reduces the amount of carbon

emissions during the processing stage. Additionally, sustainable processes focus on waste reduction and recycling initiatives, ensuring that by-products and waste materials are utilised effectively rather than being sent directly to landfill. By embracing sustainable processes, the cement industry can achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a more resilient and environmentally conscious future.

Product

In the cement industry, sustainable products are often characterised by stringent environmental standards and their capacity to minimise carbon emissions throughout their lifecycle. Such products typically adhere to certifications like BS8500, ensuring they meet specific criteria for reduced environmental impact. Sustainable cement products often

particularly when operating in urban areas and low and zero emissions zones.

incorporate alternative materials or additives that reduce the clinker content, a primary source of carbon emissions in cement production. Moreover, innovative formulations and manufacturing processes aim to enhance durability, longevity, and performance while minimising resource consumption and waste generation. By prioritising sustainability in product development, the cement industry strives to offer solutions that not only meet construction needs but also contribute to a more environmentally responsible built environment.

One key step on our route map is to move all ready-to-use Blue Circle products from CEM I to CEM II over the next 12 months. This will deliver up to a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions.

However, alongside creating more sustainable solutions, it’s important to consider how they are packaged and transported. When done correctly, very little product will get damaged during transportation and end up going to waste.

Packaging

There are very few materials more present in packaging than plastic. In fact, 34 per cent of the 90 million tonnes of construction waste generated each year is derived from materials used to package products and materials.

However, the focus on sustainability extends beyond just reducing waste. A plastic packaging tax (PPT) was introduced in April 2023 to incentivise businesses to use recycled plastic in packaging. This means that companies that manufacture in the UK or import into the UK at least 10 tonnes of plastic packing within a 12month period need to pay PPT.

At Tarmac we’ve recognised the need to go beyond just meeting regulatory requirements and are actively seeking ways to reduce our environmental footprint. We were the first cement manufacturer to produce 50% recycled bags, and we’re actively working towards developing a net-zero packaging solution within the next few years. By prioritising the use of recycled materials, we’re not only reducing our reliance on nonrenewable resources but also minimising our contribution to the growing issue of plastic pollution.

Placement

The placement and transportation of cement requires reinventing traditional delivery methods, reducing road deliveries, and expanding the use of alternative fuels.

Across our Tarmac business we have made great strides transitioning the mode of transport from road to rail wherever feasible thus reducing overall road deliveries. To further supplement this, we constantly strive to maximise the amount of product we deliver on every vehicle. As

an example, in our Packed Products business, by working closely with our hauliers and customers, and through clever logistics planning, we have increased our delivery load fill by c.10%, which has taken 1,400 deliveries off the road every year. When vehicles are delivering our products, we then work closely with our hauliers to ensure their impact is minimised, by encouraging the use of alternative fuels and the adoption of efficiency technologies.

Alongside this the industry should be embracing positive change by taking advantage of opportunities, such as circularity of pallet use which promotes the reuse and recycling of pallets, in turn reducing waste and minimising environmental impact.

One thing is clear, achieving net zero can only be achieved by looking at every area of a business. Reaching net zero carbon emissions will require more than just a commitment from cement and concrete manufacturers, these efforts also need the collaboration of the wider construction industry, academia, government bodies and customers across the entire value chain.

SHOULDERING THE BURDEN

Many people will suffer with a shoulder problem at some point in their life – it can have a huge effect on the ability to complete everyday tasks from getting dressed to going to going to work, especially in manual jobs.

So why is shoulder pain such a common issue? This is because the shoulder is a very flexible joint. Think of all the ways you can move your arm and reach out for things. The shoulder is quite a complicated joint (technically, it’s actually four different joints) that has a wide range of movement. It is considered to be a ball and socket joint due to the glenohumeral joint. The head of the upper arm (the humerus) is like a ball that sits within the cup-like socket of the scapula (called the glenoid). The ball and socket joint is quite shallow – hence why it can be prone to dislocation – and it relies on a lot of support from muscles, tendons and ligaments to keep everything in place.

The collective name for the soft tissues that surround the shoulder is the ‘rotator cuff’. Strains and sprains can happen to these muscles and soft tissues resulting in pain around the shoulder, with difficulty in doing certain movements too.

Occupational injuries to the shoulder can happen after a single accident or develop over time. It is recognised that people who work in construction may be high risk due to the nature of the work and the environment they work in. Occupational shoulder pain may be caused by:

● Awkward movements: Maintaining awkward positions can put additional stress on the shoulder joint and lead to injury.

● Repetitive motions: Repeating the same movement can lead to shoulder pain over time. This is often seen in painters or decorators.

● Accidental falls: This could happen to anyone at work. Uneven flooring, slick surfaces and building sites can cause slips and falls leading to shoulder injuries.

● Lifting and pushing heavy objects:

This can lead to straining the shoulder, especially with poor lifting techniques.

It is important to be properly assessed if you are experiencing shoulder pain. Figuring out what the problem is may help you to be able to fix it. Physiotherapists can perform accurate assessments and initiate treatment plans for shoulder pains so you may be directed to seek help from them in the first instance.

Rest, painkillers/ anti-inflammatories and physiotherapy exercises may be advised. Sometimes further imaging –XR, ultrasound or MRI scan – can be used to look in more detail at the shoulder joint

THIS MONTH, GP ALICE FITZGIBBON COVERS THE COMMON PROBLEM OF SHOULDER PAIN

and the soft tissues around it if needed. For inflammatory conditions like tendinitis, sometimes a steroid injection can help it settle down. If there is a bigger problem, such as with recurrent dislocations or tears in the muscles of the rotator cuff, then surgery may be needed by a hospital specialist.

One of the ways you can avoid getting a shoulder injury is, if you do a physical job, by warming up the muscles and soft tissues before starting work. A good way to do this is by stretching, as you might do before sports. Also being mindful of how you do things can help avoid unnecessary strains.

An example of this would be digging a hole. Consider where you throw the dugout earth to avoid excessive twisting. This can help both the lower back and the shoulders from necessary strain. If you have been shown the way to complete certain tasks at work, or equipment to use, it is advisable to stick to this. Job tasks can be designed with consideration to what is needed in terms of equipment and the environment to prevent injury and damage. This is known as ergonomics and is promoted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

So, if you have shoulder pain, stop and get it assessed. Contact your local GP surgery and they can advise who is available for you to see. In some places you may be immediately directed to a physiotherapist for assessment. It is better to try and identify any issues early in case the pain should get worse and lead to reduced movement and the need for time off work (which can have its own implications in terms of finances, especially for the self-employed). Many cases of shoulder pain will settle with time, rest and the right strengthening exercises.
