GREEN SHOOTS

The resilience of the building industry and its workers should never be underestimated. Problem solving is a daily reality for the trades and that extends to running a business. Diversifying is now embraced as a matter of course, with far fewer firms occupying narrow specialisms in favour of winning work when and where they can.

It’s a strength which has been rewarded of late with an upturn in the construction sector as a whole, and the repair, maintenance and improvement sector in particular. At the same time average earnings for the self-employed are following the same positive trajectory, with vacancies for permanent roles also increasing.

In the years ahead the ability of the sector to adapt will be tested still further – and the rewards for those who can do just that could be considerable. Under the terms of the Paris Climate Agreement the government is bound by law to achieve net zero by 2050 and a significant proportion of the necessary gains will need to come from the built environment. It is a process that is already underway and its momentum is only going to accelerate. The Future Homes Standard is set to insist on the installation of heat pumps into new build properties, for example, and the regulations will become mandatory in 2025.

According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) there are 8 million lofts that need insulating and 20 million uninsulated floors that could be upgraded, not to mention all those cavity walls and triple glazing projects.

These are jobs that could be undertaken now, this very day, often without mastering any new products, techniques or specialist training. General builders are the most valuable weapon that we have in the battle for higher levels of energy efficiency but previous attempts to unleash their potential have proven to be woefully inadequate.

Remember the Green Deal? Or the Green Homes Grant? The collapse of these initiatives came after accusations of excessive red tape, unacceptable costs, and an inaccessible application process for homeowners and installers alike.

There has, however, been some criticism that the FHS proposals lack ambition in addressing the building fabric. Much higher levels of insulation and triple glazing should work in tandem with low carbon technologies, and not to overcome the limitations of the build. At the same time, increased levels of air tightness bring their own mould and condensation issues and will need to be given due consideration in the overall design.

These are all factors that builders will need to routinely consider, not just in new build housing but in retrofit. For the local

Positive signs on the horizon for small builders, says FMB

The 1.1% growth in construction is welcome news, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) in response to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). “The figures show positive growth for the repair, maintenance and improvement sector, which increased by 4%,” comments Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB. “As we approach the General Election the political parties should be supporting the building industry to build more homes and improve the ones we have as the best means to help turbo charge the economy in the years ahead.”

More than a dozen volunteers from Band of Builders (BoB) unveiled the garden to Glenn Ward after braving “every type of weather going”, including snow and heavy rain, to carry out the transformation. Glenn and wife Esme enlisted the help of the charity after Glenn collapsed on a building site and was left having to learn to walk and talk again after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour. Impact of secondary heating systems overlooked in net zero policy, warns OFTEC

The government’s ambition to transition homes from fossil fuel boilers onto heat pumps could lead to an increased reliance on secondary heating systems, in particular solid fuel appliances, which risks undermining the UK’s air quality objectives and could also hinder the UK’s net zero ambitions. That’s the message from OFTEC, which has raised concerns the government has overlooked the potential unintended consequences of off-grid homes having to switch their primary heating system to a low carbon solution, which is not suited to their home.

The consultation is set to ban gas boilers in all new-build properties and will call for developers to install heat networks or heat pumps in all new housing developments.

“It is imperative that the Government works quickly to process all responses in order to refine their proposals ahead of the 2025 implementation of the Future Homes Standard,” urges Alastair Murray, CEO of Rendesco. “Any deviation from the current timetable would create further uncertainty for housebuilders.”

Energy bills reduced for more than four in five homeowners after installing solar panels

New research from Halifax reveals that investing in solar panels leads to cost and energy savings for homeowners. As a result, Halifax is introducing a new £1,000 discount on solar panel installations with Effective Home. With the typical 3.5 kilowatt-peak PV solar panel system costing around £7,000 on average, this discount will help more homeowners transition to solar power.

Northamptonshire builder, Ryan Lange is on a mission to build a greener future and he’s doing it with an ambitious tree planting initiative.

We were working on a back to brick renovation on a fivebed detached property,” recalls the eponymous proprietor of R Lange Construction, when asked what inspired his tree planting campaign. “It struck me just how much waste was generated because, with the best will in the world, a lot of what you’re stripping out is just not suitable for recycling.” It was that experience that planted the seed of an idea – and from little acorns grow mighty oaks.

“I started to think how I could be more environmentally aware myself. As a builder there are more sustainable materials and methods becoming available all the time, but you are ultimately beholden to the client as to what’s specified. I came to the conclusion that the only way I could reduce my own carbon footprint in any meaningful way was to plant some trees.”

Not one for small measures Ryan decided to well and truly go into the woods with a commitment to plant 5,000 trees over the next 10 years. His first

challenge was to find suitable locations and willing landowners who would share his vision. “We were working on a wedding venue near the village of Dodford and I got on really well with the client, so I asked him if he could accommodate any trees on his estate. He agreed, so I paid for the saplings, provided the labour and we had our first 300 in the ground. That was three years ago, and we’ve since completed our second planting in Preston Capes, which consists of 1,200. That means we’re up to 1,500 and counting!”

Ryan’s company has been trading since 2016 and is the epitome of the kind of local building firm of which there are many hundreds of thousands up and down the land. His five-strong team operates in the counties of Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, undertaking everything from large renovations to extensions and new builds. Given the time pressures of running a business and managing up to four or five projects at any one time his tree planting endeavours are remarkable for their dedication to giving something back to

the environment.

“The hardest part for us is to find people with land who will buy into what we’re doing,” continues the Daventrybased tradesman. “In the second location I was able to collaborate with the Woodland Trust, and part funded the planting. Even with that support, however, I’ve still spent around £900 on trees, and it took four of my own employees four days to plant the 1,200 at the Preston Capes site. If you add up the labour and materials that’s an outlay of around £4,000 thus far.”

With its bucolic countryside and charming natural stone villages the area around Banbury, Towcester and Daventry has been described as the ‘new Cotswolds’. For Ryan it is the vast expanse of farmland that is an opportunity to co-opt the local community into his ambitious tree planting scheme. The

Woodland Trust has already proved a useful ally and provided invaluable guidance in terms of what to plant, how and when. “We’ve made use of a native mixture, including oak, beech and hornbeam, and you have to be mindful of the season when they’re going in the ground, the spacing between each seedling and so on. I knew nothing about the subject before I started so it’s all been a learning curve for me.”

Ryan is now 3,500 trees from his target, with seven years to go, but has no plans to conclude his budding career in arboriculture when he reaches 5,000. “The

He’s now taken that a stage further by setting up a Training Academy in Staverton, Northants. “I’ve converted one of our storage units into a space where we can teach bricklaying, because there’s a real shortage of places where people can learn about building skills in that area,” reveals Ryan.

“We’re hoping to attract not just young people, but any enthusiastic DIYer who wants to take their skillset to the next level. We really do need to think more creatively about who we recruit because the problem is acute. More people are retiring than entering at the other end of the age range.”

figure I originally came up with was a bit of an estimate, and sounded quite ambitious, but I won’t be stopping. When we reach the current objective, I’ll probably commit to a certain amount a year.”

Ryan’s real aim is for others to take a leaf from his own CO2 saving book: “My hope is that this will inspire other people to think about what they can do for the environment,” he concludes. “We’ve been sharing what we’re doing on social media, and there’s a dedicated section on our website. If that motivates more individuals to address their carbon footprint then there’s a chance we can make a

difference. Of course, there is a personal satisfaction as well. I’ve lived in this area all my life and when I drive past the fields where we’ve planted trees I’ll be able to say that I did that.”

INTO REVERSE!

Liza Gratton, Group Chief Finance Officer for Indigo Group, gives PB readers a handy guide to the VAT Domestic Reverse Charge.

The purpose of the VAT Domestic Reverse Charge (DRC) was to prevent fraud and increase tax compliance in the construction industry. Under the DRC, the responsibility for paying VAT on certain construction services is shifted from the supplier to the customer. This means that the customer must account for the VAT on their own VAT return, rather than paying the supplier.

The reverse charge applies to supplies of construction services made between VAT-registered businesses where the recipient intends to make an onward supply of the construction services. The reverse charge applies to a wide range of construction services, including building, alteration, repair, demolition, installation, and decoration. There are some exceptions to the reverse charge, including supplies to end-users and supplies of certain professional services, such as architects’ services.

The introduction of the DRC has been controversial in the construction industry, with some businesses expressing concern about the administrative burden and potential cash flow issues. However, HMRC insists that the measure will help to reduce the level of VAT fraud in the industry and increase tax compliance. Only time will tell on that one.

The list of building and construction services affected by the DRC is the same as the list of ‘construction operations’ covered by the Construction Industry Scheme (except for supplies of workers provided by employment businesses). For a full list visit: WWW.RDR.LINK/BBD018

The reverse charge is only applicable

to construction companies that are VATregistered, within the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) and supplying construction services to another VATregistered business. If the customer is a member of the public, the DRC does not apply and VAT should be charged to the individual as normal.

The reverse charge is also not applicable to supplies made to an end user. An end user is someone who receives a construction service but does not supply it on, for example, a person owning a property having construction work done to the property.

Further exceptions to the reverse charge include supplies between connected parties and between landlords and tenants (if the customer notifies the supplier that the exemption applies).

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

VAT DOMESTIC REVERSE CHARGE (DRC)

can apply to move to monthly returns using your HMRC online VAT account.

If you are a subcontractor, and the reverse charge applies, then this means customers will not be paying your VAT. This will reduce the gross value of payments coming into your business, so it’s important to plan this into your day-today cash flow. If you are a supplier, HMRC recommends checking the CIS and VAT status of your customers to understand whether the reverse charge will apply.

Lastly, supplies by employment businesses or umbrella companies are not subject to the reverse charge, even if those supplies fall within the Construction Industry Scheme. For VAT purposes, employment businesses supplying construction workers are treated as supplying staff rather than building and construction services. If the reverse

Kerry Webley founded KSW Developments

Warwickshire in 2020 and over the past four years has more than doubled his win rate. Kerry explains some of the reasons behind his winning ways

Kerry Webley began his building career fresh out of school at 17. After completing his apprenticeship in bricklaying, working for several firms in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire and developing a love of stonework, Kerry set up KSW Buildings & Maintenance at the age of 26 before rebranding as KSW Developments Warwickshire in 2020. From four employees, Kerry now has a team of 25 and growing.

“We’re very established in our local area,” said Kerry, “which has been really key to our growth. We’re fortunate we’re in an affluent area, but word of mouth has been crucial.” Kerry continued. “Another factor is that we employ our own plumbers and electricians, which helps us complete work at pace and have a continuous cycle of projects. Homeowners don’t really want to wait for their project and because we don’t have to wait for other trades, we can complete jobs faster. You’re only as good as your last job too so having our own trades helps us ensure the highest standard of finish.”

Aside from quality of work and speed, service is something Kerry highlights as on all the time with our clients,” Kerry said.

A WINNING FORMULA

Elaborating on what service means to KSW, Kerry continued: “A lot of it is based on communication with clients. Every week we give the client an update –what’s been done that week, what’s planned for the week ahead, who’ll be at their job and when so they aren’t secondguessing. We’re also fortunate to have Natalie in our team who is in daily contact with clients to answer questions. To us, it’s important there’s always someone to speak to. Clients are spending a lot of money with us. The least we can do is be available and update them on the progress of their work.”

For Kerry, this focus on communication and service isn’t just about the

relationship between us and the client. “We need the same commitment from our merchant and service providers like Build Aviator,” Kerry continued.

For 130 years, the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) has been a collective voice for the trade, bringing together individuals, businesses and associated trades to fly the flag for excellence.

The Association is Britain’s largest trade body dedicated to the sector and represents painting and decorating businesses of all types from sole traders through to large scale national contractors employing hundreds of operatives.

The PDA’s Premier Trophy Awards is a glittering ceremony held at Plaisterers’ Hall, London, in July, where winners across seven categories are announced, with one project named Supreme Winner. This year marks the 35th annual event,

and judging of short-listed projects is already well underway.

Apprentice of the Year

The winners of PDA’s popular Apprentice of the Year competition, which takes place across four regional heats followed by a grand final, will also be announced at the Premier Trophy Awards. PDA’s Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year also attracted record entries last year, with winners announced at the annual Networking Event Gala Dinner.

Both competitions test the accuracy, stamina and skill of junior and senior apprentices during a gruelling six-hour challenge – and both are fiercely contested by apprentices from across the UK, with young people travelling to Kent, Birmingham, Rossendale, Glasgow and Doncaster to take part.

Neil added: “To be the recipient of a Premier Trophy Award is to demonstrate that your business has been independently judged to produce some of the best painting and decorating work in the country. It’s a prestigious accolade and a key showcase of some of the incredible talent and expertise to be found among painters and decorators.

Read on for Zinsser’s simple step-bystep guide to mould prevention and removal in just four simple steps.

First, thoroughly clean the mould-stained area with Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner before rinsing thoroughly and allowing to dry. The Universal Degreaser & Cleaner is a water-based detergent that is colour fast, fabric safe and removes tough stains quickly and effectively from many surfaces.

Once the surface is suitably prepped, allow to dry before priming with ultimate performance, water-based primer, sealer, stain-killer and odourblocker B-I-N AQUA. B-I-N AQUA effectively blocks stubborn stains from mildew, nicotine, smoke, water, grease, tannin, crayon and lipstick, acts as an outstanding barrier against odours and offers exceptional adhesion without the need for sanding. ABOUT TIME

Slow Decorating is making headlines. Jason Burns of Shurtape takes a moment to consider why.

Slow decorating is the latest buzzword in the media when it comes to homes and gardens. What does it mean, though? For a professional decorator, time is of the essence. Yes, you want to do a thorough job, that lasts and makes the customer happy. But you also have a time restriction – your customer could have more houses to paint, a new store to spruce up, or a family that needs to use the kitchen before Christmas.

It turns out that Slow Decorating is not necessarily about painting slowly – it’s more the practise of doing something thoroughly. It involves researching fabrics and considering colours, really allowing a space to develop and grow gradually by practising a more planned approach to decorating and interior design. Less haste, more happiness that lasts. According to House and Garden magazine, it promises “improved results, environmental benefits – and… enjoyable renovations.”Sounds great, doesn’t it! In a fastpaced consumer world, it’s nice to think that people appreciate quality workmanship and look to a professionally created interior that will stand the test of time. And even better that people are enjoying renovations and decorating projects: happy customers mean happy tradespeople.

It’s not a completely new concept, but it’s certainly getting a lot of attention –here are a few reasons this trend seems to be gaining traction at the moment.

Reaction to fast lifestyle

Our scroll and swipe screen culture apparently means we have shorter attention spans. According to CNN Health, the average attention space on a screen has decreased by 103 seconds between 2004 and 2023. The algorithms of social media present issues when focus is needed for longer, more challenging tasks. Social media is great – but the response to it is good too. Slow Decorating goes against that culture of immediate gratification, instead

encouraging taking a little more time over things, planning things properly and getting to know a space before rushing in. And knowing that the space will continue to evolve. Slower, more considered activities that take time and concentration should be encouraged and clearly decorating has been recognised as one of them.

Mindfulness

Another buzzword but again, one that has value. Taking the time to appreciate what we are doing is really beneficial. A recent survey by a leading trade and DIY retailer listed the removal of FrogTape from a wall as one of the top 10 most relaxing DIY tasks and we agree – we get so many videos of people slowly removing the tape, as there is something so satisfying about it. It’s the same with painting –the act of the painting is rhythmic and methodical. It’s calming. Seeing an interior (or exterior) be so changed or improved is fantastic, but the actual journey to get there is one that can be enjoyed. Slow decorating encourages people to really be in the moment and enjoy the whole process, not just the finished results.

Sustainability

Slow Decorating is the opposite of fast consumerism as it encourages the use of vintage furniture and upcycled accessories. We work with a number of fantastic furniture upcyclers who breathe new life into old pieces, reducing waste and bringing joy through a paintbrush (and a little FrogTape of course). Slow Decorating is seen as a reaction to mass production –a deliberate approach that encourages meaningful, personal connections to the things we live with, whether that is upcycling older products, giving new life to heirlooms or buying new products that are high quality and

built to last. This is less about fashion and more about long-lasting, quality work.

Cost

While this may sound expensive, taking time over something means people actually consider their budgets better. Some things may be splurged on, and professional tradespeople are more likely to be used for the best results, but other elements are more likely to get cast aside, when thought about in more detail. Impulse purchases don’t feature in Slow Decorating. It’s more about shopping with intention and buying things that will bring happiness. This is actually more costeffective.

Many interior designers will suggest that Slow Decorating starts with the walls –and that makes sense. When it comes to painting and decorating, choosing the right ladders and access equipment is crucial, explains Darren Binns, National Sales Manager of Jefferson Tools.

Painting and decorating often means working at height, so the priority is always safety. In the UK, falls from height remain one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities, underscoring the importance of adhering to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 establish clear guidelines for any work above ground level. Small builders should ensure that all work at height is properly planned, supervised and performed by competent individuals.

Key practices include:

Avoiding work at height where possible: Always consider whether the task can be completed safely from the ground or a lower level.

Selecting the right equipment: Choose the most appropriate ladder or scaffolding for the task, considering height, duration and the nature of the work.

Regular equipment checks: Before use, inspect ladders and scaffolding for any damage or defects that could

compromise safety.

Securing the ladder: Make sure the ladder is stable and securely footed before use. When using an extension ladder, follow the one-in-four rule – for every four feet in height, the base should be one foot away from the wall.

Training: All users should be trained in the safe use of ladders and scaffolding, understanding how to set up and move the equipment safely.

Remember, when working near electrical sources, either indoors or outdoors, it’s crucial to use ladders made from

non-conductive materials, such as fiberglass, providing an added layer of safety for tasks that may expose the user to electrical hazards. For all other tasks, lightweight yet strong aluminium ladders are easy to transport and set up, ideal for quick tasks around a home.

Professional builders and decorators must conduct risk assessments before beginning any work at height, ensuring that they select the right equipment for the job, are familiar with its safe use and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

In the quest for more sustainable, higher performing and more versatile finishes, paints and coatings have recently gone through something of an evolution. However, the tools used to apply these innovative coatings have not always kept pace with the same level of innovation –until recently.

So what does it take to design and manufacture a new paint brush? It may sound fanciful, but any professional decorator understands that small changes in design and filament material can make a huge difference to paint consistency, finish and application experience. That’s why Hamilton has spent the past four

Outperforming nature

The first notable difference in the Perfection CleanEdge brush is the lack of natural bristle. While still favoured by some decorators, the quality of this animal-borne bi-product is declining amidst ethical concerns. nyone who deals with wood knows how the quality of materials used can impact on the finished product as well as the ease and efficiency of working on the project overall. Though a small element such as a screw can seem trivial in a large carpentry or joinery project, poor quality fixings and fastenings used in wood can cause a nasty split in the materials, whether a precious piece of oak or costly plywood. Education and training around which products to use for various applications is vital, and this is something that ForgeFix understand well. That’s why we are supporting merchants, and therefore end users, with training and education to ensure the right materials are used for the job in hand.

Independent customer research

Our approach is simple, by supporting our merchant customers they are then best able to support their customers. In doing so, we hope to create a virtuous circle in

which our product knowledge gets to end users quickly and effectively, in an effort to make their lives easier.

To understand where we could make the most impact, in 2023 we set about conducting independent customer research of our merchant customer base, ‘the voice of the customer’, to better understand their needs and wants, as well as ways in which improvements could be made in terms of service, product ranges, quality and stock and delivery expectations. A well-informed

merchant means that this knowledge will then be passed on to their customer – the end user, encouraging them back to store due to the knowledge and support they received.

Improved education and training

One of the main findings from the research was that customers wanted more education on new products, as well as hands on training on how a product should be used and their best applications.

This education and training is particularly important to the merchant’s customer facing employees as it helps differentiate them from online competitors and enables the building of relationships with their customers who turn to them for product advice.

To facilitate training, ForgeFix has developed a team that travels the UK to undertake training with merchant teams on site at their own branches. The training is led by a technical team and covers all areas from product selection, uses, safety and

best practices. The training programme is also offered free of charge.

In addition to the merchant training, Forgefix is offering the opportunity for the tradespeople using the products to receive training in merchant branches through a series of ‘trade mornings’ and bespoke customer events. This aims to make end users more familiar and confident with the products but also helps build relationships between merchants and their customers.

Social media

Customers who are unavailable for training have been given access to a series of training videos freely available on YouTube, specifically developed to support with product understanding, and knowledge.

We also know a lot of the people using our products will turn to social media for advice so we have invested in our social

and informative content as well as competitions and giveaways.

Sustainability

Something our customers and their customers wanted was to have products that are sustainably packaged and presented in a way that displays clear and informative information, including screw gauge and length measuring devices and information of head types so customers don’t need to open boxes. We have also

plastic by providing core products in simple brown cardboard and easier to recycle plastic tubs.

So, before starting your next big joinery project, it’s worth some research or speaking with your local merchant on which screws work best.

Exterior cladding in the residential and non-residential sectors is expected to have significant growth in the next forecast period due to its insulation and aesthetic benefits.

The UK timber cladding market is set to experience a growth rate of over 4% during the next five years, due to its costeffectiveness, durability, and sustainability. Timber provides many benefits to surpass other building materials, which is why many builders are opting to use timber cladding in their projects.

What is cladding?

Cladding is the application of one material over another to provide a skin-like layer. The cladding layer is used to provide thermal insulation and protect the structure from weather-related damage. The exterior skin shields walls from moisture and penetrations caused by other weather-related damage, while dramatically changing the appearance of a building, potentially increasing its value.

What are the current timber cladding trends?

Accoya wood is increasingly becoming the material of choice for its durable qualities, resistance to rot and insect damage, and a life span of 40 to 60 years. The timber’s natural warm appearance used on the external facade of buildings helps to bridge the gap between indoors and outdoors, achieving a more organic flow between the building and nature.

Thermally modified timbers such as Redwood Thermowood and Radiata Pine Thermowood are also seeing an upward trend, partially due to the lack of Siberian Larch, but also due to the fact that these timbers offer increased durability even when exposed to the most extreme environments.

Benefits of cladding?

As well as its durable and resistant qualities, timber cladding also offers increased thermal insulation over other building materials, contributing towards a more sustainable construction industry. Wood is a natural insulator, and when used in cladding form can help to reduce a building’s heat loss, increasing energy efficiency by lowering heating and cooling bills.

The timber used for exterior cladding

requires less energy to produce than any other construction material, contributing to sustainability efforts in the supply chain. Timber’s long life allows for reuse or recycling at the end of its life. Its unique design facilitates easy rejuvenation to change its appearance, providing builders with a long-term solution for builders.

Timber cladding also effectively reduces noise pollution by converting sound waves into heat. This makes it a more effective sound-dampening material compared to other cladding options.

Things to consider

Timber species, profile and additional coating options are all things to consider, as well as location of the cladding, i.e. in exposed or coastal applications. When costing up a project, we recommend a 10% wastage allowance on all cladding timbers and up to 15% on Thermowood, due to the brittle nature of the product.

Additionally, it is essential that the timber cladding is stored correctly on-site to protect it from the natural elements. Storage areas should be dry and wellventilated, not subject to extreme temperatures. Sudden changes in moisture and temperature can cause swelling or shrinkage of components.

What about coatings and fixings?

It is crucial to use wood protectants and cleaning products regularly to preserve the appearance of long-lasting cladding. The performance and lifespan of lower durability woods and cheaper timber species can be improved by using factoryapplied treatment technologies such as preservative treatments or wood modification.

All coated cladding requires end-grain and fixings to be sealed to ensure no moisture ingress. We suggest that if any profile is to be coated, the leading edges have a slight round on them to aid with coating adhesion. Timber is easily worked, and the fire performance of timber can be improved by factory-approved treatments such as impregnating the raw timber with suitable fire-retardant products.

It is recommended that timber requiring fire treatment is done in controlled conditions and by an approved factory application. The use of site brushes or spray-applied fire treatments is not approved by the Wood Protection Association (WPA).

Additionally, fixings should be specified to be made of noncorrosive material such as stainless steel, which is ideal for all timber species. Other materials can cause permanent black spotting and corrosion staining to the surface of the cladding.

Macdeck Landscaping – a specialist decking company – is gearing up for significant growth after receiving a patent for its unique deck system.

Tell us about the development of the Macdeck system?

Macdeck worked with the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), part of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) Group, and the Advanced Composites Group (ACG) of the University of Strathclyde on its development, with the help of the Innovation Voucher Scottish Funding Council (SFC) funding by Interface. NMIS is operated by the University of Strathclyde and is part of the High-Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC). NMIS support and expertise has been invaluable in helping us accelerate the development and refine the product. The positive results of the research gave us the confidence to take the panels to market and apply for a patent, which has now been secured.

Q

So, just how does it work?

Macdeck’s lightweight panels are fixed on top of a timber frame and are designed to cover difficult ground, such as slopes or areas prone to flooding. Customers can choose to have porcelain tiles, gravel or natural turf installed on top of the panels, creating ‘floating’ gardens in spaces that may otherwise have been unusable.

Q What are some of the advantages of using Mackdeck?

As climate change brings heavier rain and increased risk of floods, the product could be used to futureproof gardens and other landscapes. Less soil or other base material is needed to build ground or foundations, and less heavy machinery and concrete is required, making the process much more carbon friendly.

The modern alternative to softwood decking is composite but some boards can weigh as much as 45kg per square metre, limiting what can be placed on top. However, Macdeck’s

panels, made from a composite material, weigh just 10kg allowing the system to carry significantly heavier top layer materials. The material, GRP, was initially designed for use in marine environments, making it strong, durable, and a safer to walk on.

Q What’s the potential for growth with Macdeck?

The patent for our new landscaping solution is a big step forward that could see us breaking into new markets. We’re receiving significant interest from other landscaping companies wanting to use our system. With the patent now in place we can start delivering panels to the other merchants. Our next step is to expand and grow the business, and we have already hired two new apprentices and we’re looking to add CAD designs to support our manufacturing process further.

The company is in talks with builders’ merchants and other potential distributors to license the panel systems across the UK.

Understanding u values is key – the lower the better for heat retention. Building Regulations for replacements mandate a minimum u value of 1.4 W/m2K (for ‘Watts per square metre Kelvin’, just in case someone asks!), but surpassing this threshold is a breeze and yields substantial benefits.

Double and triple glazing can be made more thermally efficient, for example, by specifying the inclusion of argon or even krypton gas in the units. And far from being Superman’s fictional home world, these inert, odourless,

glass on the odd occasion the sun comes out in the UK. However, it’s important to note that krypton, albeit highly effective, can be both hard to obtain and costly.

Additionally, enhancing frame energy efficiency by filling cavities with low thermal conductive materials presents a smart solution. For instance, in our traditional vertical sliding windows, this technique presents us with an impressive u value of 1.2 W/m2K which is quite an achievement for this type of frame.

Noise out...

High performing glass can also be used to improve sound reduction in a home. Special sound attenuating laminated glass, made using a specially formulated interlayer sandwiched between two panes of glass, will significantly reduce noise from roads, factories or perhaps railways and airports. And triple glazing will have a dramatic effect at reducing noise inside the home.

Irrespective of how safe an area is, you will never hear a customer tell you that they don’t care about the security of their property. So why not offer them extra peace of mind by suggesting upgrades that will give them the most secure windows and doors possible?

Although it is a popular misconception that the additional third pane of glass will improve the insulation value by an equivalent pro rata value, sound deadening, and security will be significantly improved. And such units typically also include a gas insert and may be tuned with the use of specialised coated glasses to further improve thermal insulation, noise control and security. Ask your supplier for advice as everyone will take a different approach.

A built-in water tank reduces dust, foldable legs make it genuinely portable, and there’s a height adjuster for depth cuts to a maximum of 120mm, whilst it can accommodate materials up to 240mm for step cutting. why Norton Clipper has designed a new range of blades for use with the new battery machines, which will enhance the efficiency of the motor and prolong the battery’s runtime. Whereas a standard blade is 2.8mm wide the Silencio Beton Battery blades are 2.5mm, with 12mm high laser welded segments giving a longer product life and a higher cutting speed. At 300mm they’re also slightly smaller but – by reducing friction and energy usage – will still outperform the current 350mm blades with an extra five linear metres of cutting capacity when used on the CS352 B Floor Saw. Elsewhere the tough and versatile CFP13 WB Forward Plate compactor packs a hefty 13kN of centrifugal force. It can be easily moved around via two wheels lowered at the rear. There’s a water tank, with a sprinkle bar at the front for asphalt applications,

The steel centre has a sandwich construction with three layers: steel/noise dampening material/steel, which reduces the noise level by 15 dB. It will perform for 40 minutes on one charge, which is 48m2 of fresh concrete. The batteries take up to 1.5 hours to fully charge.

Every builder is regularly confronted with one of those awkward tasks where you’ll need arms like Mr Tickle and the power of Mr Strong. You might be able to employ another pair of hands but there’s not always the luxury of having them around on every job. Enter a handy little device from Easy Innovations that will be your friend in so many places and should be your constant companion in the back of the van.

The Easy Air Wedge has as many uses as there are building industry trades and, with some creative thinking, you’ll no doubt find a few that even the manufacturer hasn’t thought of. Pump it up and you can lift, level and square just about anything and, given that it’s

goods, cabinetry, office equipment, water tanks or radiators. Traditionally, you might make use of wedges and packers to complete the same task, or even old hand tools, but this will obviously run the risk of damaging the workpiece, or whatever it is you’re trying to manoeuvre. If you’re having to then replace and repair it that can be a very expensive mistake. Should your strength fail you, there is also the risk of the kind of injury that could put you off work, which can be disastrous for the self-employed.

Small but strong

The key to the Easy Air Wedge is the integrated and patented core plate technology, which means it will keep its shape while sliding into a space as small as 2mm. The wedge extends to 70mm in width and, once in position, you can pump it up with just two fingers whilst a release valve will quickly deflate it. THE NEXT LEVEL

A spirit level is a tool that is used daily by almost all tradespeople and Stabila is a brand that you’ll find on nearly every jobsite. Now that we’re living in a digital world, it came as no surprise that the manufacturer recently launched the Stabila TECH 196 DL Spirit Level.

It initially looked sophisticated, with all its buttons and screens, but it’s still simple to use. You could say its plug and play, but it’s powered by 2 x AA batteries, so let’s call it push and go. To start off, let’s clarify that it has the standard vials to check horizontal or vertical areas on an object. This addresses the issue of technology being good when it works. So, the level won’t let you down – even if the batteries do – because gravity is always right.

It’s also got two digital displays for instantaneous measurements of inclinations and slopes. Depending on your preference, or the job at hand, the display modes can be switched from °, %, mm/m, in/ft – decimals and as fractions. It even has a reference mode which allows you to transfer angle measurements to other components. If you’re worried, you’re going to accidently press a button by mistake, it has a key lock to protect against that happening. Then there is the option to illuminate the screen, which helps when

working in poor lighting conditions.

A clever touch is for the digital display to auto rotate when turning the level upside down, in a similar way to a phone screen, which saves having to turn your head or even misreading a reading. Having said that, you don’t even need to look at the level to know something is level because it has an added optional acoustic guidance. There are two levels of audible signals which is perfect for when levelling kitchen units, meaning you can place the level on top and adjust the legs without having to keep getting up to look at the bubble or needing a second pair of eyes to help.

When you think of a level you instantly think it’s used to level something. In some cases, however, some things need to be placed out of level, such as guttering and

recently installing drainage pipes and this level helped to get the gradient I needed, which was a 25mm drop in every 1-metrerun. Trying to calculate that without this Stabila tool may have been draining in itself for many.

Although it is sensitive it can withstand a lot, including from dust and water and, thanks to its IP 67 rating, the level can be temporarily submerged in water. So, if it does get dirty, it can be cleaned easily. Even if it does take a slight knock, or if the temperature fluctuates, calibration of the electronic system is not necessary. It does also have a bag which is ideal for protection when storing and transporting.

Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh finds his level with the latest from Stabila

In a recent episode of the Professional Builder podcast we spoke to Paul Stevenson of Bosch Professional Accessories about the X-Lock disc changing system for angle grinders.

So, what did Paul tell us about the XLock system and the thinking behind its development? Everyone who’s ever used an angle grinder will be able to picture this particular scene all too well. You need to change a disc but you can’t find a spanner. After much searching it turns out it’s in a toolbox in the back of the van parked outside. Having finally located it, much cursing ensues at the fiddly job of removal. You might then throw in a further volley of expletives if the disc is still hot and you burn your fingers. Added to that is the risk of not fastening it properly, working loose in operation, and the disc flying off when running at 13,000rpm.

What you need, of course, is a tool free system that does the job in seconds. The inspiration for the design that does just that actually came from a Bosch engineer who was an avid winter sports enthusiast. He wanted to translate the effortless ease with which you can clip your boots into skies and the result is the X-Lock disc changing system for angle grinders.

User friendly

THE X FACTOR

This ingenious development turns this potentially time-consuming task into one that takes seconds. All you have to do is pull the red lever on the top of the machine and it releases the disc without you needing to touch it. You can then select a replacement grinding or cutting disc and, when it clicks in, it is secure. There’s the reassurance of being able to both hear and see that the mechanism has locked in place whilst all X-Lock discs are backwards compatible and will fit on

any Bosch angle grinder.

“The benefits don’t stop there,” explains Paul. “With traditional grinders, if you’re not careful, you can actually mount the disc in the wrong direction, but that’s not possible with the X-Lock because it will only clip into place when it’s correctly installed. Bosch angle grinders are actually packed with safety features. XBrake will stop the rotation of the disc within seconds when you put the machine down, for example. In addition, KickBack Control makes use of an accelerometer to detect a sudden change in orientation, and shuts down the tool as a result, whilst Drop Control makes use of the same

technology if the machine is dropped.”

As Paul explains the X-Lock can also prevent damage to the workpiece in use. “When you’re flat grinding with a standard machine the locking nut protrudes from the disc and that can potentially damage the material. With X-Lock there is no locking nut so it’s simply not possible. It can actually improve the quality of the finish and get the job done quicker.

TAKE IT AS ‘RED’

In the second part of our focus on JB Red Battens, Kevin Taylor, the manufacturer’s Training and Technical Support Manager, highlights the key areas to consider for successfully setting out tile battens on plain and clay tiles

Whilst setting out tiling battens on a roof should be straightforward, errors can occur. When this happens, roofing projects can run into trouble leading to expensive, inconvenient, and timeconsuming remedial works. Indeed, in some instances, full roof elevations may have to be stripped off and re-installed.

But by adopting a careful and systematic approach to setting out tiling battens in relation to eaves, ridges, variable gauge single lap roof tiles, as well as plain and clay tiles, the potential for problems can be eradicated and high performing roofs created.

Setting out for plain and clay tiles

When setting out battens for plain tiles, the first course should be set at least 50mm over the leading edge to ensure

effective drainage into the gutter, as with larger tiles.

However, it is important to make sure that an under-eaves batten is also in place. To establish the position of both battens, check the hanging length of both the standard tiles, and the eaves/tops tiles and check that the tails of the two tiles align once laid, before moving on to the next step.

At the ridge, remember to leave enough room for the top course tile, an additional batten and an eaves/tops tile. The gap which needs to be left at the ridge will vary depending on the manufacturer and whether the tiles are clay or concrete.

Because there are so many batten courses per metre with plain tiles (10 per m) and the gauges are small, it is not

realistic to establish an even gauge throughout. Instead, the main body of the roof can be battened at the maximum gauge of 100mm, with the top 15-20 gauges adjusted as required to ensure that the minimum headlap of 65mm is maintained. Battens for plain tiles should be 38mm x 25mm and be factory graded to BS 5534.

For fixed clay gauge pantiles and similar products, it is good practice to check the recommended gauge with the manufacturer and install a small area of tiles on temporary battens (or the first few courses) to ensure a good fit, before installing the rest of the batten courses.

RESTRAINT STRAPS

The VX and the HX from BPC Building Products are thin profile restraint straps that don’t require notching during installation. The VX is 1.2mm thick and suitable for vertical restraint applications, where the HX is 1.5mm thick and suitable for horizontal restraint applications. THE SPACE RACE

According to research from car manufacturer Vauxhall, 40% of motorists don’t have access to a driveway, which rises to 60% of motorists who live in our towns. The clean transport campaign group Transport & Environment has revealed that new car models are getting too big for British roads, exceeding the 180cm minimum for onstreet parking.

It is no wonder that research by Aviva Home Insurance in summer 2022 found that as many as 25% of homeowners have already made changes to their outside space to accommodate vehicles with a further 17% of homeowners planning to increase their driveway areas.

This motorist demand for space needs to find a working balance with the homeowner responsibility to minimise the risk and impact on roadside drains, sewers and to neighbouring land/property from rainwater run-off on their property. This is an issue builders need to flag with their customers before work starts.

It is vital to note that since 2008, any installation of a driveway using an impermeable surface material that doesn’t actively absorb rainwater and is more than five square metres in area size, will require planning permission from a local planning authority.

car park bay size of 2.5 metres by 5 metres generates an area of 12.5 square metres, so it is a very low threshold before planning permission is a requirement when using impermeable driveway materials such as asphalt, porcelain paving slabs or tarmac.

These regulations were introduced to account for the huge rise in properties where garden land was being converted to additional parking spaces for cars, leading to ‘urban creep’. This has reduced the available area for rainwater to be absorbed naturally back into the ground, leading to more surface water runoff reaching roadside drains and sewer systems which were never intended to take this additional surface water.

Managing rainwater

These systems, such as Brett Landscaping’s Invicta Flow and Omega Flow, and others like them, offer great design flexibility to meet homeowner need for space while absorbing and managing rainwater.

Builders and driveway specialists do have other incentives for advising the use of permeable block paving. The material is readily available in a wide range of product options and remains at a competitive cost per square metre comparable to permeable tarmac.

Permeable block paving can be installed in wet weather, which allows work to continue, even during the unpredictable UK downpours. If the paving is installed properly the ongoing maintenance requirements and costs for the homeowner is minimal, while homeowners may also have a financial incentive, as some water companies will offer money off water bills if the water landing on a property is disconnected from the local sewer system.

All the above sets out the current requirements and practicalities of a driveway conversion or extension. Brett

Landscaping works closely with the Association of SuDS Authorities (ASA), which represents local authorities across England with supporting the delivery of sustainable drainage.

Changing the norm

Co-Chair of the ASA, and head of the Flood Risk Management Team at Lancashire County Council, Laura Bigley, argues that with increasing storm events placing existing drainage systems under growing pressure, homeowners have an intrinsic social responsibility to think about how their renovations will affect the properties in their vicinity:

“Land drainage law is a complex area of regulations, but at its centre is a very simple premise – the landowner is responsible for drainage on their land and should not cause a nuisance to others. While homeowners should not alter their terrain without understanding how this will affect

“We hope that in time permeable surfaces will become ‘the norm’ for homeowners to use on their driveways and garden areas. This will help us all contribute towards responsibly managing surface water from our property by keeping it out of the drainage systems and mimicing natural processes.”

The ASA advises that there are some measures that can be taken to compensate for the lost permeable area and habitat an extended driveway may cause. This provides an opportunity for builders to

along the boundaries of land in preference to fencing assists with surface water management and absorption, but also provides noise reduction an improvement in air quality and habitat for wildlife.

The installation of water butts is another great option for homeowners to consider. They are cheap, easy to install and can capture many litres of rainwater, helping to better manage flood risk in the community. There are many sizes, styles and even ‘smart’ water butts to choose from to suit any project.

Advising customers of permeable driveway options to avoid the need for planning permission, and that ‘urban creep’ can be offset with green solutions does not have to be a bruising battle, but instead can lead to a driveway that is both practical, cost effective and socially responsible.

THE FULL MONTY

A lot of skill goes into creating good masonry walls so maintaining the results is only right. This is not about cleaning after any damage is done, this is about maintenance – making sure that the lovely stone is protected throughout the year.

Winter frosts can cause cracks in masonry, creating the perfect breeding ground for organic growth, moss and algae – and if left untreated, these can damage the surface, as well as looking unsightly. Wet weather encourages that growth – and we’ve had the wettest winter in 130 years – but the Met Office is predicting a good summer, so homeowners will want to be outside to enjoy their gardens.

It’s vital that organic moss is dealt with and that any tiny cracks are not worsened by the wrong kind of aggressive cleaning maintenance throughout the year. It’s more than getting the gardens and home walls looking good, it’s also about protecting the materials used.

Stone will last for years. It’s important that customers are familiar with the different types of stone you have used, as they are all very different. Limestone is the one most commonly used and is created by a material – usually silicon –holding together lots of tiny grains. It tends to have a smoother surface and more consistent colour. Concrete is the second-most-used substance in the world after water and is the most widely used building material.

Unfortunately, it can be susceptible to damage, especially water damage. It is porous and can absorb water, which can lead to cracking and help promote organic growth. This can allow water to travel further into a foundation which can lead to structural damage. Granite, as you would expect, is the toughest of the

natural stones. Thermally stable, it is the least porous. While these materials all differ, they share the same quality – they need to be protected and washed with a gentle soft approach. Professional Builders can educate their customers about this, which will help them get the most durable results when they clean it in the future.

Masonry will not retain its lovely appearance without regular maintenance, and I would always recommend cleaning stone surfaces thoroughly twice a year –brushing regularly to remove debris, weeding to remove unwelcome greenery and then using a soft washing solution to restore the materials natural lustre all year round, without causing any damage.

It can also blast away jointing between stones and doesn’t actually deep clean the organic growth, it just pushes the roots deeper, so it comes back year on year, meaning it needs to be done more frequently – using more effort, creating a thankless task.

Gently washing with a liquid such as Monty Miracle is a kinder approach. It’s simply applied to the surface then left for ten minutes before rinsing. The product’s unique formulation cleans, cleanses and eliminates organic growth and organic staining, and following the process the solution is fully neutralised allowing it to safely go into the soil or down drains. It’s more eco-friendly, quicker, and kinder to the materials.

Good masonry work is a skill. Which is why the care, cleaning and maintenance of it is so important. By advising customers well, away from a ‘fast fix’, builders can be sure that their handiwork will remain looking good – with the stone respected and protected for years to come.

HOT TOPIC

Heat pumps have long been identified as a renewable energy source that can contribute to our net zero ambitions. Professional Builder puts the question to Stuart McWhinnie of Grant UK on the technology.

Q

Can you provide some insight into the potential for heat pumps in the UK market?

SW: At present, emissions from buildings make up 20% of the UK total, of which 78% of this figure is down to home heating appliances. The government has set out some ambitious plans on the route to net zero, and one of those is the phasing out of new and replacement fossil fuel boilers. As a result, heat pumps will have a major role to play in decarbonising home heating.

In 2021, approximately 55,000 heat pump installations were installed, but the target by 2028 is 600,000, which would make the UK one of the largest markets in Europe for heat pumps by the end of the decade.

Q

What about the new build sector?

SW: Absolutely. The Future Homes Standard – which the government is still committed to – means new builds from 2025 onwards will have some form of low carbon technology installed. 230,000 new builds were registered in 2021 but the target is 300,000 a year in England alone by the mid-2020s. So, coupled with the fact that these homes will be highly insulated, the ideal heating solution will be a renewable technology such as a heat pump.

Q Could you tell us about some of the financial help that’s available?

SW: Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, a grant of £7,500 is on offer to contribute towards a heat pump installation. It is important to note that these funds are available to the homeowner and contain strict criteria for a successful application.

The property must have a current EPC with no outstanding recommendations for wall or loft insulation, for example, and the company who installs the air source heat pump must be MCS registered. If the property is a new build, then it has to be shown that the build was financed by the homeowner and not the developer – i.e. it has to be a self-build.

There is also zero VAT on energy saving appliances until 31st March 2027. At present, there is an estimated cost of installing a system between £3,000 and £8,000.

Q Clearly there’s a big business opportunity here for tradespeople with the right skillset, but what would they have to do to become certified and

A G1 installer can offer a 7-year guarantee on heat pump installations, for instance.

Q When they are out in the field and they’re certified and competent, what would be some of the key factors tradespeople need to take into account for a successful heat pump installation?

SW: The key to a successful heat pump installation is the planning stage of the project. Air source heat pumps are termed as low temperature heating appliances, and they operate very differently to conventional heating systems. As a consequence, an in-depth heat loss calculation carried out to EN 12831 standard that will consider the

fabric of the property and its U-values is crucial. Ventilation is also an important factor, with the external and internal temperatures that the system will be expected to operate undertaken into consideration. Once that calculation has been carried out, the planning of the pipe runs and the heat emitters can take place and sized accordingly.

When we consider the installation of the heat pump itself, where it is to be sited is important. For an air source heat pump a south facing aspect is preferable, whilst it will equally need to satisfy planning development rights and sound calculations. There are several other installation points that must be satisfied, such as power cable sizing, and soak away requirements. All that may sound daunting, but Grant UK will be on hand to help, not just with training, but in the design, and subsequent support.

QCan you give us an overview of what’s in the Grant UK heat pump range?

SW: At present, we have four units in the range from the 6kW Aerona³ R32 up to the 17kW R32 model. It is a common belief that heat pumps are noisy in operation but one of the key features of the Grant UK products are lower sound levels. Indeed, the Aerona³ 13kW and 17kW heat pumps both benefit from the internationally recognised Quiet Mark award. There’s also a hybrid available,

termed as monobloc units with a totally self-contained refrigeration circuit. That means they do not require the skills of an F-Gas registered engineer to set up and commission. The R32 refrigerant conveys heat energy efficiently, safely and cost effectively and has a low global warming potential compared with traditional refrigerants, with an ozone depletion potential of zero. Every model is compact, and highly efficient, even when external temperatures are low, whilst the controls are easy for the customer to navigate.

We do some fencing from time to time and if you need to dig a conifer out doing it by hand is not much fun, but the E10z will plough through it. At the same time, the smoothness of the controls does allow you to easily master finer grading work, and that’s important in some of our landscaping jobs. Overall, it’s a very responsive and versatile machine.”

All that outlay in vehicles and plant speaks of an ongoing commitment to improving his business, and exudes professionalism in front of new and existing clients. “Any investment in machinery is sizeable for a business like ours, but since we bought the Bobcat we haven’t stopped using it,” concludes Adam. For a small machine the E10z is making a big impact for Shear Construction.

RENAULT TRAFIC

VOLKSWAGEN CRAFTER

Extensive software and hardware updates are amongst the new features in the Volkswagen Crafter. After he had been greeted by a traditional Bavarian oompah brass band, the fans set Harry challenges in a mock “Bavarian Olympics”, which included a version of curling –only using full one-litre beer steins rather than stones, naturally. And then another sport, which involved hammering nails into a log.

I had to ask Frau Wise Howell about the rules for this one. She thinks the idea is that you have to bury the nail in the timber with only two hammer blows. And since the nondrinking Harry Kane was up against opponents who had apparently been on the beer since nine thirty that morning (he arrived at 11) it seems likely he might have been in with a good chance.

What I love about this event is that hammering nails into timber seems to be a popular German sport. I’m not sure what kind of a contest a British village would have in a similar situation – cheese rolling, perhaps?

It reinforces the idea that German children are given tools to play with at an early age – and I mean proper steel tools like hammers, saws and pincers – not flimsy plastic replicas. So the average

German boy or girl grows up with practical skills, prepared for the world of work. This fits in with the fact that apprenticeships in the manual trades for young people are highly regarded. Trainee carpenters or roofers, for example, are treated with the same respect as if they were at university.

Last year I was in Bavaria, visiting a brewery (well, of course), and in the attached childrens’ playground there was an electric crane. Sure, it was only a small crane, but it had proper controls, and the young operators were able to pick up buckets and timber blocks and transfer them to different parts of the enclosure.

Now, I have probably mentioned before that every small building job in Germany seems to have a crane on site. What we would call a pedestrian-operated crane. So it makes sense that when these German kids grow up and build their own houses (which a large proportion of them do) then they already have the skills to shift construction materials around the site.

Maybe it’s time we took a leaf from the Germans’ book, and started teaching British children some proper skills. They won’t all grow up to be football stars.

ON YOUR NERVES

You may have heard of this condition before – there has been great work done to raise awareness and funds for research by high profile suffers such as ex-rugby players Rob Burrow and the late Doddie Weir. So, what exactly is MND and how does it affect people?

Motor Neurone Disease is an uncommon condition overall. Everyone has motor neurones – this is the term used for the nerves from the brain and spinal cord that help control the movement in all muscles of the body.

Motor neurones help the body function –we need them for movements we take for granted like those that allow us to talk, swallow or breathe, as well as the bigger movements allowing us to walk or run for example. In MND, the motor neurones stop working effectively.

Over time, they stop delivering the messages from the brain to the muscles they supply. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste away –essentially, they stop working. MND can affect different muscle groups at different times or start in different places for different people. One person’s symptoms might start as a weakness in their hand whereas someone else might have difficulty swallowing. MND can affect adults of any age but is most commonly seen in people in their 60s and 70s. If you have a close relative with MND you might have a slightly higher chance of having it but the vast majority of cases do not run in families.

Motor Neurone Disease has a whole range of symptoms as it affects everyone differently. Some early symptoms can include:

● weakness in your ankle or leg – you might trip, or find it harder to climb stairs

● slurred speech, which may develop into difficulty swallowing some foods

● a weak grip – you might drop things, or find it hard to open jars or do up buttons

● muscle cramps and twitches

● weight loss – your arms or leg muscles

● difficulty stopping yourself from crying or laughing in inappropriate situations

MND be difficult to diagnose as there is no one test for it. Other conditions may cause similar symptoms. If it is suspected, you will be referred to the Neurology specialists for investigations such as:

● blood tests

● a scan of your brain and spine

● tests to measure the electrical activity in your muscles and nerves

● a lumbar puncture – when a thin needle is used to remove and test the fluid from within your spine

MND is generally a progressive life limiting disorder. Over time, it affects more and more of the motor neurones leading to loss of functions throughout the body. Eventually, sufferers may be unable to breathe without a ventilator or swallow and may need a feeding tube. In some people this progression happens quickly (months) and in others it may take longer – it can be difficult to predict the course of the disease. Sadly, there is currently no cure but there is a treatment called Riluzole to help try and slow the progression down. Specialist care and advice also helps people manage symptoms and maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible.
