A

ccording to the latest Federation of Master Builders (FMB) State of Trade Q1 2021, the first three months of 2021 saw enquiries with local building firms increase at their fastest rate in a decade – how is that for a bit of good news? At the time of writing this article, England and the rest of the UK is still slowly, and cautiously, coming out of lockdown and managing to contain the spread of the virus and it seems the construction industry is thriving. The theme of this viewpoint is positivity and having a positive mental attitude (PMA).

The above mentioned report comes with a few caveats, one of the more worrying being that the cost of materials does seem to be surging – a pattern reflected in the electrotechnical industry. However, the good news that local building firms are being sought afer is something that we should be feeling very positive about. To discover more about the FMB State of Trade Q1 2021 and hear comment from Brian Berry, Chief Executive at the FMB, take a look at the news on page 8.

Whilst I appreciate it’s not easy to always approach every day with a Positive Mental Attitude, looking for small graces and silver linings can help shape how we feel. Boosting the construction market further is the ‘rise of the retrofit’ which has people rethinking and repurposing spaces and rooms in their homes. Businesses have also cottoned on to this trend with many in the hospitality industry taking the time to redecorate and reinvent their spaces to offer their customers a new experience. Whilst the obvious comes to mind: a lick of paint here, some new shelving there, and if you’re anything like me a lot of house plants – many are completely restructuring their lives along with the built environment they spend so much time in.

There are so many different areas within the retrofit market and maybe less thought about is the cable management side of things. Within the Cable Management feature in this issue, Flexicon talks about its cable protection solutions designed to maintain more mechanical strength and continuous protection of cabling. When an installer is tasked with retrofitting products to improve the overall design, look and functionality of any given space, a wholesaler with all the information on current trends and easy to install products is going to be in the best position to assist and provide the right equipment for the job.

My final bit of positive news comes from the EDA, stating that: demand from electrotechnical businesses for training courses and apprenticeships has increased substantially in Q1 of 2021. More good news that young people are actively interested and applying to work in the industry with competent training and apprenticeships to support them. It is also good to know that these businesses are helping those already in the industry to improve their skills.

NEWS & VIEWS FMB RESEARCH SHOWS POSITIVE SIGNS

FASTEST RISE IN BUILDING WORK ENQUIRIES FOR OVER 10 YEARS The first three months of 2021 saw enquiries with local building firms increase at their fastest rate in a decade according to the latest FMB State of Trade Q1 2021.

This increase has fuelled significant difficulties with construction material shortages, according to new data from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

The survey is the only of its kind to track the experience of small to medium-sized (SME) construction firms in the UK and found: Workloads, enquiries and employment all grew in the period January to March 2021, with enquiries growing at their fastest pace in more than 10 years. It also found that activity in all

sectors grew, but repair, maintenance and improvement saw the strongest performance with 55% of respondents reporting increased workloads.

In regards to employment, it revealed that 38% of builders are struggling to hire bricklayers, up from 22% in Q4 2020 and 34% are struggling to hire carpenters/joiners, up from 23% in Q4 2020. A significant amount of builders mentioned material prices as an issue with 93% of builders saying that material prices were rising.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, adds: “I am delighted to see the positive reports from builders across the

UK that workloads, enquiries and employment are all firmly back in positive territory after a difficult year for business. In the first quarter of the FMB’s 80th year, it is particularly pleasing to see enquiries grow at their fastest rate in more than a decade. However, success is not without its challenges. A whopping 93% of builders reported material price increases in the period January to March, with particular concerns over accessing roof tiles, glazing products, timber and insulation.”

LEGRAND UK & IRELAND LAUNCHES CABLE PATHWAYS GUIDE A new guide that outlines the key updates relating to cable pathways has been launched by Legrand UK & Ireland, following updates to a number of key industry regulations. The guide – Creating Cable Pathways – follows recent updates to the IET Wiring Regulations, as well as the release of the Dame Judith Hackitt Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety Final Report.

It has been launched to provide electrical installers with assistance and recommendations on how to best specify cable containment systems, explaining how to create a cable pathway through a building while navigating the current standards landscape. The guide provides the relevant information key stakeholders such as architects, designers, consultant

and electrical contractors need to know.

The short guide provides an overview including fire safety in design, management and use and the

Construction Products Regulation (CPR).

It also explains the relevant changes to the BS 7671:2018 IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition.

EMPLOYEE BUY-IN NEEDED FOR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION SUCCESS

Many wholesalers are failing to keep their workforce at the heart of their digital transformations, leading to employee dissatisfaction and hindering the success of digitalisation initiatives, new research has found.

Less than half (47%) of the sector’s employees react positively to the implementation of new technology, and just 30% appreciate the benefits of new technologies, according to the Connected Enterprise report, produced by digital transformation specialist Nexer in partnership with applied futurist Tom Cheesewright.

The report also shows that 12% of wholesale businesses find that their employees are reluctant to embrace new technologies, and 9% of business leaders would like to implement more technology but worry that they will face resistance from employees.

The research suggests that a lack of adequate consultation and education prior to the implementation of new business technologies may be behind employees’ negative reactions.

Tellingly, just 38% of wholesalers said that their workforce finds it easy to learn how to use new technologies, while 41% said that some or many of their employees find it a struggle.

Colin Crow, Managing Director of Nexer, comments: “Only when used correctly and consistently can digital solutions make a tangible difference to business operations and outcomes.

“So while it’s vital to get the C-Suite on board in order to secure funding for exciting new technology in the first place, it’s equally as important that those who will be using the technology day-to-day are convinced of its benefits.

EMPLOYEES CRUCIAL TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

“In order to ensure optimum return on investment, businesses should always take a collaborative approach, explaining to employees the reasons behind any new digital technologies and providing as much support as needed for them to feel comfortable using them.”

According to the research, only 2% of wholesalers’ employees tell them that business technology improves their day-to-day life. Furthermore, nearly one in 10 said that they regularly receive complaints from employees following the implementation of new technology.

Colin continues: “It’s important to bear in mind that while digital transformation makes companies more profitable, enhances the customer experience and enables them to keep up with competitors, it should also always improve the employee experience.”

EDA PRESIDENT EXTENDS TERM Chris Ashworth’s role as President of the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) has been extended until March 2023. Chris, CEF Director of Operations, who took over as President in December 2019, will lead the Association’s Board of Management for longer than the usual two year term of office.

Stearn Electrical’s Charlie Lacey will also continue in his role as Vice President until March 2023 and, along with former President, Simon Barkes, MD of BEMCO, form the EDA’s Presidential Team.

“It has been a strange time to be President of an industry organisation. The event calendar has been decimated and there hasn’t been the opportunity to meet in person over the past year,” explains Chris. ”We have, however, adapted our ways of engaging with our members and had excellent exchanges of information and dialogue using platforms such as Zoom and Teams. There have been many new and challenging issues through the pandemic and of course Brexit, it has been a privilege to work with the EDA team as we help members to navigate through troubled waters.”

SUPPORT SYSTEM WernerCo continues to bolster stockist support with two new graduate appointments that will be helping wholesalers boost their sales strategy. Here we learn more about its graduate recruitment drive.

W

ernerCo’s Graduate Training Programme, part of its ongoing commitment to supporting merchants and retailers, is now well underway with the first intake of graduates already embarking on their new careers as Field Sales Merchandisers.

Since their appointment in January, the successful recruits, which include 21-year-old Ewan Goodwin and 23-year-old Rachel Oakes, have already been integrated into the wider WernerCo Merchandising team. As well as being the first point of call for customers seeking further support, the new graduates are helping customers to utilise the POS and marketing materials that are available. Additionally, they are also working with customers to develop sales strategies, helping them to understand how stock levels can help them to increase sales value, whilst also supporting with other day to day product enquiries.

This graduate recruitment drive is part of WernerCo’s ongoing commitment to investing in new talent, in order to provide a greater level of support to its stockists.

The scheme is a two-year long training programme, which will enable candidates to effectively monitor products, participate in sales meetings and workshops, and produce layout plans for stores, ensuring they are all well prepared to enter the market as Field Sales Merchandisers. PEW spoke with John Barclay, UK Sales Director at Neomitis, who guides us through the positive changes he has seen impact the industry over the years, as well how he and his team navigated through the Covid-19 pandemic.

A. I initially was taken on as an apprentice with British Gas in 1975, after 15 years of service and gained installation experience, I then moved to the heating manufacturing side with what was Landis+Gyr in 1989. Landis+Gyr was acquired by Siemens in 2002, and over a 25-year period I was able to progress to Head of Sales for Siemens.

In 2014 I was introduced to Neomitis and could see that the UK heating market was screaming out for the type of products that Neomitis were manufacturing – products that were easy to use, install and reliable.

I then joined Neomitis as the UK Sales Director and, along with developing the UK operation, I have formed a dedicated team of knowledgeable Regional Sales Managers that cover the whole of the UK.

How did you get into the industry and your current position?

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

A. The Covid-19 situation has been the biggest challenge that I have come across whilst working within the industry.

Just like many of the magazine’s readers we have had to re-think the way that we conduct business.

As the Neomitis team are great at developing working relationships face-toface with customers we have had to adapt and rely on online comms platforms such as Skype, Microsoft Teams and Zoom to achieve this.

What do you consider Neomitis’s unique selling points?

The Internet has also allowed end-users to research what heating products they want installed within their homes, based on features and benefits that fit perfectly around their lifestyle, this has been a great way for the Neomitis brand and our products to get noticed. The internet has created a connected world of products that can be controlled from anywhere. A. Within the next five years I will be retired – however I will be leaving behind a great, flexible, and innovative company that will continue to grow and release new products that are perfect for the UK market.

A. Neomitis has some exciting plans over the next few years. We aim to become ‘The Product of Choice’ through continued product development and introducing new products to our connected product range as the UK market demands it.

lucian by Click’ is designed with the installer in mind, Elucian is an extensive range of metal consumer units that will cover a broad range of installations and offers a number of features and benefits that will enhance the products’ convenience, flexibility and safety properties.

The consumer unit collection comprises a total of 58 individual lines which fall under five main product groups.

100A Mains Switch Consumer Unit – a range of 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 20 way consumer units furnished with a 100A Mains Switch. This will allow the contractor to fully populate the board to the exact requirements of the installation.

Dual RCCB Consumer Unit – 100A Mains Switch + 2 x 80A Type A RCCB – a range of 4+4, 5+5, 6+6 and 8+8 way consumer units furnished with a 100A Mains Switch + 2 x 80A 30mA Type A RCCB. Dual RCCB/SPD Consumer Unit – 100A Mains Switch + 2 x 80A RCCB + 2 Pole SPD.

SPDs offer the required protection against overvoltages. The Elucian consumer unit has located the SPDs adjacent to the Main Switch for ease of installation.

Combination Unit – 100A Mains Switch + 2 x 80A RCCB – a range of 8, 10, 12 and 16 way consumer units furnished with a 100A Mains Switch + 2 x 80A RCCB. This unit allows for two separate banks of MCBs to be protected separately from Earth leakage by each RCCB but also contains additional incoming neutral terminals to allow

connection for a separate bank of RCBOs or MCBs which commonly provide a total separation/protection for circuits deemed to be critical such as alarm systems, fridge freezers and stairwell lighting.

RCD Incomer – Mini Board – RCD. Mini Boards offer a practical solution in workshops, garages, outhouses and sheds which require only a small number of circuits (3 available ways). Isolation is handled by either the 2 Pole 63A or 80A 30mA Type A RCD supplied. Earth leakage on every circuit is dealt with by the one main RCD, meaning that a residual current fault on any circuit will cut the power to all other circuits.

Scolmore has highlighted some of the key features that the company believes will make these units stand out in the marketplace and help installers make an informed choice: Non-Combustible Enclosures Non-combustible and robust metal housings ensure compliance against the third amendment added to the BS 7671 Wiring regulations in 2015 requiring consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies in domestic premises to have a non-combustible enclosure.

Tail Clamp Each consumer and Mini unit come supplied and pre-fitted with a Tail Clamp for added stress relief to ensure the Mains Tails terminations do not come loose and to help fix the Mains Switch Isolator more securely to prevent any rocking or movement.

more than 30mA occurs the device will disconnect within 40mS. When an RCCB trips it is usually to prevent any electric shock or personal injury as electricity is flowing through an unintended path to Earth. The RCCB will detect the imbalance and will then trip and turn off the circuit. If Earth leakage is detected, the RCCB will limit the magnitude and duration of the current to Earth.

Knockouts The units all come supplied with a wide range of 40mm, 32mm, 25mm and 20mm knockouts making each board universally adaptable for all installation and cable types. The knockout positions and sizes were configured as a direct result of feedback obtained during Scolmore’s extensive engagement with contractors across the UK to investigate the number and types of knockouts required in the most convenient locations for ease of install and best installation practice.

Rear Knockouts The units also come supplied with rounded rectangular knockouts for easy removal and to provide ample cabling capacity for any installation type. Each knockout will be supplied with a 0.5M grommet strip to allow a smooth entry into the board, protecting cable from any potential sharp edges.

Earth and Neutral Bar Configuration Each unit has its own specifically configured Earth and Neutral Bar to allow for best practice installation of each board type, neatness of connections and ease of circuit identification.

Backed off Neutral and Earth Bar Screws For added convenience and to allow quick and easy termination.

Type 2, 2 Pole 40kA SPD available in 275Uc (V~).

Surge Protection Devices are used to protect the installation from an electrical surge, whether that be man-made or due to natural causes such as lightning strikes not direct to the installation. SPDs are used to protect electronic equipment connected to the installation such as computers, televisions, washing machines and LED lighting.

MCB style solid blanks for any unused ways.

These are din rail mountable and can only be removed when the cover is removed, thus providing additional safety. Other types of blanks can easily fall out or become dislodged.

CIRCUIT PROTECTION RANGE The Elucian Circuit Protection Range comprises Mains Isolator Switches, RCCBs, SPDs, MCBs, RCBOs and blank modules.

2 Pole 100A Mains Isolator Switch the central switch controlling the supply of mains electricity from the meter to the consumer unit and subsequently throughout the rest of the property. A Mains Isolator Switch is switched on and off manually - it will not perform either action automatically or electronically.

Type A 2 Pole 30mA RCCBs (63A, 80A and 100A) constantly monitor the balance of current in the line (Live) and neutral conductors. If an imbalance between the conductors of

The Elucian RCBOs are compact single module devices that allow for additional space above to make it easier to install and terminate outgoing circuits. These devices are Type A rated offering a resilience when DC current is present. They are Single pole devices, isolating the Line (Live) conductor only. They only require a Neutral fly lead connection and accept Line (Live) and Neutral terminations direct into the device.

LOW SMOKE WITH FIRE Panel wires are a mainstay and key component of any industrial control panel.

Here, Clynder Cables talks to PEW about its Low Smoke Zero Halogen panel wires that provide a number of safety benefits in fire situations.

L

ow Smoke Zero Halogen panel wires (LSZH) can be used in electrical cabinets, switch control, relay and instrumentation panels of power switchgear and are a frequently sought-after industrial component.

With ever increasing awareness of fire situations and how components react in them, recent trends show a move in the market towards LSZH panel wires.

In a fire situation, LSZH cables produce extremely low levels of smoke and toxic fumes with zero acidic gases. This is unlike PVC cables which can produce large amounts of smoke and toxic fumes when subjected to fire. This means increased visibility and reduced air toxicity, leading to faster evacuation of a building and reduced danger from smoke inhalation.

Therefore, these cables are often specified

This, however, does not eliminate them.

While Low Smoke Zero Halogen Cables are subject to strict standards, LSF cables have no standards covering them. In consequence, LSF cables have been found to emit HCl levels in excess of 20%

when subjected to fire. It is always important to make clear these disticions when you are adivising your customer on the best and most suitable cables that are applicable for the job.

THE RISE OF THE RETROFIT Alex Smith, Technical Director at Flexicon, manufacturer of flexible conduit solutions, outlines some of the current technologies available to help electrical wholesalers capitalise on the growing refurbishment market.

T

he Government’s 2025 industrial strategy is encouraging the construction industry to reduce whole-life greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment by 50% and to halve construction lifecycle times.

Despite these ambitious targets to ‘build, build, build’, commercial property construction remains low in contrast to house building and infrastructure; and when it comes to upgrading the electrical infrastructure of existing properties, retrofit options are seen as key to success.

The state of the market The current preference to renovate rather than demolish existing buildings and infrastructure is set to lead to an increase in refurbishment programmes and is cited as a major contributor to growth in the construction market.

Indeed, according to the joint report from the NICEIC and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) entitled ‘2021 Vision – The Future of the Electrical Contracting Industry’, “…Work will be required on virtually every building in the UK, with demand for systems to minimise energy consumption requiring the skills of electrical contractors for installation.”

This will naturally create opportunities to rewire and upgrade the electrical

infrastructure in complete buildings, providing new sales growth for both electrical contractors and installers alike.

Reducing commercial carbon emissions The UK Green Building Council reports that the built environment accounts for a staggering 40% of UK emissions, meaning that many commercial property owners are keen to reduce their carbon footprint – and to take advantage of lower running costs in the process.

Taking the hotel and leisure market as an example, there is an increased drive to make buildings more energy efficient.

Green retrofit solutions such as new heating, ventilation systems and enhanced energy management control and monitoring have a key part to play and will require electrical cabling installations and infrastructure to be upgraded.

However, it is important to minimise the duration of installation programmes, while disruption to paying guests also needs to

be minimised, meaning many contractors are looking for new and innovative products to ensure a fast and efficient upgrade.

In fact, in the 2021 Vision report, 96% of electrical contractors interviewed stated that new products to enable sustainable new build and renovation of existing properties represent an opportunity for their business growth.

Elsewhere, the rise of home renovations and extensions is considered as a serious alternative to moving to a larger property, alongside homeowners being encouraged to upgrade to energy-efficient solutions such as solar panels and heat pumps.

These drivers are all leading to increased demand for retrofit electrical wiring systems, that will avoid major disruption to the building fabric or fixtures.

Retrofitting options So, what options are available for electrical wholesalers to offer to their customers that need a simple, retrofit cable protection solution?

Retrofitting cable protection has traditionally been a complex and lengthy task, with the installer required to pull existing cabling through the open end of a conduit system. Divisible conduits, such as the new Flexicon FPADS range, allow existing cabling to be inserted laterally via a slit opening. This product consists of two open conduit profiles, which then interlock to form a protected IP40 system around the cables.

It is also important to consider the cable routing. Traditional split conduit options can potentially expose cabling when bent

or routed around corners, whereas the newer, divisible conduit options will maintain more mechanical strength and continuous protection of the cabling irrespective of orientation or routing due to their interlocking design.

Termination and fittings All cable protection should be specified as a complete end-to-end system, taking into account not only the flexible conduit used, but the range of termination and fittings required also.

This has traditionally been a complex area for installers in retrofit applications, as historically, there has been less focus on design innovations for fittings and accessories until recent years.

To make it easier to terminate cabling in retrofit applications, Flexicon now offers its new Flexicon FPADS range, with a hinged fitting and locknut to wrap around existing cabling, meaning no disruption and easy and secure termination.

Protecting new cabling As well as considering retrofit options, specifiers may also be tasked with installing new electrical cabling at the same time. In this scenario, there is a broader range of options available and specification should take into account the range of external hazards that the cabling may be exposed to; whether that is to meet a certain IP rating, enhanced fire performance properties, resistance to chemicals or UV exposure to name a few.

ur daily routine has changed considerably during the past several months and humanity has adapted swiftly to protect themselves and others around them. The few extra minutes to apply your face mask and the regular application of hand sanitiser really does save lives against Covid-19.

Michael’s Story Louise Adamson recalls the tragic story of her brother, Michael: “My brother died at a time when safe isolation had been taught to apprentices for the 20 years previous.

We’re now 15 years further on, and it breaks our hearts a little more each time we hear about an incident caused because safe isolation is not being put into practice.

Employers of persons who conduct work on low voltage systems should provide the right tools and equipment so their workforce can do their job safely. If they are not being provided with voltage testers, proving units and LOTO kits, they must STOP THE JOB. Because there’s nothing more important than going home to your loved ones at the end of your shift.

HSE Statistics Although it is difficult to know how many of the following statistics were caused by inadequate safe isolation, in the five years between 2015 and 2020, there were 21 fatalities reported to the HSE under RIDDOR which were caused by contact with electricity. This reduced to one death in the year 19/20. But there has already been at least 1 fatality that I'm aware of so far in year 20/21.

You are more likely to die if you're involved in an electrical incident than you are in other types of work-related incident. This is taken from a HSE training brochure: "In Great Britain, roughly one in every 50 electrical accidents at work result in a fatality, compared with one in 500 from other causes. As well as electric shock, other electrically related injuries arise from burns, arcing and fires. Many of the injuries can take a long while to heal and often result in life-changing conditions."
