T

he theme of the viewpoint for this month is digitisation, the ongoing pandemic has forced businesses to think and act differently, and turning to the internet to increase sales has been a big part of that change.

There also may be a bit of repitition on this as I have spoken about this before, but isn’t life just a series of repetitious behaviours anyway? Eat, sleep, rave repeat – no that’s a different one, ignore that, at least for a few more months anyway! Life certainly feels like it’s on repeat at the moment, accepting this new life after a brief disturbance to the old ways of doing things is now a stark reality for everyone. However, as much as the ‘new normal’ is now just ‘normal’ and the old ‘normal’ is now the ‘old normal’ there are some new things becoming normal – get it? Well, it made sense in my head.

The ‘new normal’ – ok it’s the last time I use that I use a tired cliché – has seen so many people turn to the internet to socialise with friends, see and connect with family and to do business. Ready or not, the pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation in many aspects of life and the electrical wholesale market is not immune to those changes. Undoubtedly the industry was already on the road towards a digital transformation, not only in the simple buying and selling of electrical goods on ecommerce platforms but in the wider, more general sense across all areas of business include despatch, holding stock and delivery confirmation etc. Whilst I know many of you have already embraced these changes including dipping your toes into the world of social media, many will have seen a huge leap forward from where they expected, and had planned to be, this time last year.

A 2020 survey from the EDA found that the digitisation and competing with big online sellers was one of the most pressing business concerns amongst wholesalers. Although other factors have certainly played a part, such as the buying behaviours following a similar pattern to that in the consumer markets (the likes of Amazon and ebay that dominate this market have seen sales increase rapidly in the last year) the effect of Covid has also accelerated this trend by up to five years quicker than anticipated. It is no wonder that this is a concern to wholesalers who are suddenly expected to rapidly accelerate their digital expansion strategy whilst having to battle with the other aftereffects of the pandemic, such as a drop in product availability and furloughing staff amongst many other headaches.

Although, understandably, this may not be at the top of most wholesalers’ priority lists, keeping one eye on the latest digital trends will be vital to ensure you don’t get left behind. Adapting to the buying behaviours of your customers will keep you at the forefront of the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Intergrating digital process into an existing business can be a minefield and involves a lot of expertise and knowledge on a complex topic, so don’t be afraid to outsource for those expertise in order to put your business in the best possible position to prosper in the next five years and beyond.

NEWS & VIEWS actuate uk wary of funding cut

INDUSTRY ALLIANCE URGES GREEN HOMES RETHINK Actuate UK, the new alliance of eight engineering services organisations, has urged the Government to reconsider its intention to remove funding from the £2bn Green Homes Grants (GHG) scheme.

“Such drastic reduction of funding sends out all the wrong signals, especially as the Government aims to put the green economy at the heart of plans for rebuilding the economy” says Julia Evans from Actuate UK member BSRIA. Actuate UK members have expressed their disappointment that only £320m of the original £2bn would now be made available through the GHG voucher scheme.

“Initiatives to encourage the take up of low carbon solutions need to be long term and consistent,” adds Hywel Davies, from Actuate UK member CIBSE. “A short-term stimulus does not create the market shift required to achieve net zero targets, including the development of a suitably skilled workforce in key sectors.

To invest in the necessary recruitment, training and technologies, businesses must know that the Government means business, and is in this for the long haul.”

● Review the operation of the GHG, in consultation with the sector groups that would implement the energy efficient and low carbon measures it is supporting. ● Release all the original GHG funding, ensuring that the full £2 billion is available until March 2022 and act swiftly to resolve the administration problems with the scheme based on current feedback. ● Consider a requirement for GHG voucher to be used to create a ‘green building passport’ to give homeowners a plan from the medium to long term. ● Develop a robust pathway so that the GHG voucher scheme can support the transition into future long-term support. ● Reduce VAT to zero on all energy efficiency-related products.

The Government has characterised the GHG initiative, set up in 2020 to improve the energy efficiency of 600,000 homes in England by issuing vouchers to carry out home improvements, as a “short-term stimulus.” Grants could be used up to the end of the 2020-21 financial year, although work could carry on until March 2022. A recent report from the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) noted that vouchers were being issued at a ‘snail’s pace’ – only 20,000 issued at the last count, just 5% of the available vouchers. However, there is clearly consumer demand and once administrative issues are resolved and the timescale extended, supply chains will have the full confidence to develop and support the scheme.

CPA SEEKS SUPPLY CHAIN KNOWLEDGE

The Construction Products Association (CPA) is launching an industry-wide consultation into a new proposed Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI), to gather the views on the Code before it is formally launched later this year. The consultation will run from February 1st to March 31st 2021.

The Code has been developed by the CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group (MIG), which was tasked with responding to the issues raised in Dame Judith Hackitt’s report ‘Building A Safer Future’, and the credibility challenge facing our industry following the Grenfell Tower fire. The report confirmed radical change was needed for construction products, particularly in the areas of testing, information and marketing.

The Code, made up of 11 clauses, aims to set the benchmark for how product information is presented and marketed by manufacturers. A new Building Safely microsite dedicated to this consultation explains the background, and includes a specially written report on the new Code. It’s presented in an easy-to-read, digestible format for the industry to review and respond.

The MIG’s work tackles shortcomings in ‘Product Information’ identified in Chapter 7 of the ‘Building A Safer Future’ report. Its work represents two years of open debate and discussion, and of engagement with various parts of the supply chain. It follows detailed analysis of the Call For Evidence survey in 2019, which attracted over 500 responses from across the industry. The survey confirmed that for product and performance information to be trusted, it must be clear, accurate, up to date, accessible and unambiguous. These five points are the acid tests that now stand behind the 11 clauses in the new code.

manufacturers, specifiers and users of information an opportunity to comment on the new code, the implementation of its 11 clauses, and its ongoing management and policing. The consultation is being carried out independently by industry specialists, MRA Research.

CPA Chief Executive Peter Caplehorn, comments: “The importance of this new Code and consultation process will be obvious to all those working in the built environment post-Grenfell. It is our responsibility as an industry to regain public trust and credibility in what we do, and to demonstrate that technical competence can be trusted. I believe the Code represents both a determined attempt on behalf of manufacturers to correct disingenuous marketing practices and a proactive and collaborative effort to address the issues highlighted in Dame Judith Hackitt’s Report.

“The first industry consultation in 2019 was key in establishing the way forward. We are now encouraging the industry to have their say once more before the code is launched. We are reaching out to every organisation across the construction supply chain, whether that be manufacturers, specifiers, suppliers, distributors, contractors or installers.”

DETA EXPANDS TEAM In support of Deta Electrical’s growth strategy for its leading brands, Deta has announced the appointment of David Garrett who joins the team as a Senior Product Manager with responsibility for Circuit Protection.

BUSINESS AS (UN)USUAL? The Coronavirus pandemic has made a worldwide impact on the way people can physically do business together. Consequently, the effect on previously well-established business models has been extreme, massively boosting online business, whilst causing disruption and delay to distribution due to increased domestic delivery demands. So, one year into the pandemic, what has been the virus’ effect on the electrical wholesale supply chain?

M

anufacturers and importers are an essential component in the electrical supply chain, and the pandemic has severely disrupted this chain. Since the last quarter of 2020, we have been in the midst of a global shipping crisis caused by shipping containers used for moving large quantities of PPE around the globe, ending up causing bottlenecks at UK ports.

Towards the end of last year, there were around 11,000 containers of PPE at the Port of Felixstowe alone, which clogged up the port, causing container ships to have to divert and unload at other ports, such as Rotterdam.

Rising costs This impacts the electrical supply chain in terms of cost and security of supply. Cost increases have been significant; a 40ft container which used to cost around US$3,500 is currently over US$10,000 with quotes rising to over US$16,000! Inevitably, suppliers are passing on these costs with product price increases, many of which were announced at the beginning of the New Year.

In addition to these increased container costs, containers diverted to other ports on the continent are incurring significant added transport costs and delays getting them brought to the UK by road, further highlighting the supply chain’s fragility,

particularly when the majority of raw materials and finished goods are sourced in China and the Far East.

Two approaches to combating these risks to the security of supply of electrical goods are to hold large stocks in the UK providing a short-term buffer to disruption, or to bring their manufacture from the Far East closer to home, offering a longer-term solution. Online options The company moved quickly at the outset of the pandemic to upgrade its online order portal to being a fully integrated live sales platform. Wholesalers can place orders in under a minute, with quantity discounts automatically applied, and access to data sheets and installation instructions at the click of a button, as well as seeing live stock availability, enabling the wholesaler to provide an improved and more reliable service to its customers. This allowed NET LED Lighting to remain open for business during the lockdowns and throughout the whole pandemic, taking orders 24/7, with those placed before 5p.m. being dispatched the same day, thereby ensuring national security of supply to electrical

wholesalers. As has happened across the retail sector during the Coronavirus pandemic, wholesalers are also seeing an increase in the amount of business contractors and electricians are placing with them via click and collect, and online.

These new ways of controlling the supply chain, boosted by the pandemic, to ensure smooth security of supply of electrical goods, are here to stay. With reduced trade counter space to ensure social distancing, wholesalers have understandably prioritised customer visits over suppliers. The nature of the relationship with suppliers has changed, with wholesalers increasingly dealing with suppliers where possible by phone and via video calls, and placing their orders online. Like all areas of the economy, wholesalers have been hit by staff shortages caused by Covid-19 and contacts having to self-isolate, so fewer daily face-to-face meetings has generated needed savings in time and efficiency for both wholesalers and suppliers, with the additional benefit of a reduced carbon footprint.

The new normal The UK Government has encouraged firms and tradespeople in the construction sector and its supply chain, including wholesalers, their suppliers and product manufacturers to continue to operate during national lockdowns, recognising that this industry is making a major contribution to the economic recovery following Covid-19. With the disruption caused by the virus to manufacturers, logistics and shipping, to wholesalers and to contractors, it has been necessary for each component to make changes to the way they do business, in some cases quite radically!

Choice+ Programmers The Choice+ Programmers are designed for heating and hot water controlled independently across separate channels via a programmed schedule. For certain properties, thermostats are not required and a simple programmer to activate the heating or hot water is all that is needed. Leaving an immersion heater on all the time can be a significant waste of energy that can drive this figure up to 25%, or even higher. The automatic control of a Powersaver+ Controller can save on fuel expenditure and energy wastage.

CUSTOM MADE

W

hen a standard product is not available, it can be difficult trying to find a distribution unit that is the right fit for your customer’s needs.

Much of the time it is a challenge to understand all the project requirements, however, when enquiring about a custom built or made to order unit the more detail you can offer at the start of the project, the greater the opportunity to have the correct solution designed first time, saving you and your customer time and money.

Often, especially in the early stages of a project, not all details are known but when specifying a custom distribution product, gaining an understanding of the below areas will help to confidently design the correct solution for your customer.

Project overview / application: Understanding the market sector, overall project outcomes, and environmental conditions helps to select suitable product ranges, and potential alternative solutions that may not have been considered.

Style of Enclosure: Wall/surface mount, free standing, portable. How is the distribution unit to be positioned and supported?

Preferred material: Steel, Stainless Steel, GRP, Polyester, Polyethylene, Thermoplastic

or hard rubber enclosures are all options depending on the application. Expanding on this, various grades of steel are available, common options include Mild, Zintec, 304 / 304L, 316 / 316L. All are available as required in a powder coat finish, most commonly RAL7035 (Light Grey). Other colours are available. Ranges of differing thermoplastic enclosures are selected depending on application and budget. Common materials are, PBT, a polyester material used in our Variabox modular system, often selected for industrial and harsh environments. ABS is a cost-effective polymer and used in several enclosure ranges. Other materials such as PS, (polystyrene), and PC, (polycarbonate), are used for smaller enclosures and device viewing windows.

Portable equipment, often used in the events industry, or temporary power applications can use injection moulded enclosures such as our Evobox range, made from LLDPE, (linear low density polyethylene). Alternatively, custom fabricated enclosures using hard sheets of HDPE could be an option.

Preferred IP Rating: Linked to the environmental conditions, what is the minimum acceptable IP rating? Socket

options are usually IP44 or IP67, enclosures and other options may have an influence of the overall IP rating of the assembly.

Standard 13A BS1363 UK domestic twin switched socket outlets, for example, are rated at IP2x. Having identified a preferred enclosure style, the next step is to consider details of what is required.

Incoming supply: Hard wired, Single Pole Connectors, Appliance Inlet, Plug & Cable length. How would your customer like to connect their supply to the supplied distribution equipment? For fixed installations, hard wiring is preferable, useful details to think about are; Cable entry, top, bottom, left, or right.

Type and size of cable: To help determine the adequate termination sizes and spreading distances. How is the supply electrically protected? Knowing if there are upstream fuses, MCBs, MCCBs etc. helps to maintain discrimination between the supply devices, and locally provided earth leakage and/or overcurrent protective devices.

For portable or temporary use equipment, a means of convenient disconnection can be useful. Portable equipment is often supplied with an appliance inlet, the client using an extension lead to connect between the supply and the distribution unit.

Socket Count: How many are required, Current rating (A), Voltage (V), Configuration 3P+N+E (No. of Pins). We simply need to know the sockets that are required, and / or other circuits that may be used for future requirements or external equipment such as a lighting circuit.

SAFE SERVICE Family-run electrical component supplier, Niglon, has switched its RCD and RCBO offering in light of forthcoming regulation changes. Here, the company explains everything you need to know so you can keep compliant and keep people safe.

W

ith proposed amendments to the 18th edition wiring guidelines currently circulating, Niglon has moved all production across to A Type Residual Current Devices as of the beginning of the year.

The Midlands-based firm is family owned and run, originally operating under the name S D Hinley from the 1940s onwards before changing its name to Niglon in the 1960s. Currently, the business has thousands of lines covering circuit protection, wiring accessories, industrial accessories, and many other must-haves for electrical contractors. With changes being imminent to the BS7671 regulations, the team has seized the opportunity to review the company’s product offering.

AC compliance Section 531.3.3 of the original regulations, which have been in place since 2018, suggested that AC Types should be used for general installations while highlighting other options such as A Types – which can detect and protect against the risk of electrical shock caused by DC pulsating residual current. However, despite an increased residential use of lighting controls, electric vehicle charging ports, and lighting controls, their use has not been regulatory up to now and AC Types were considered ‘standard’ due to the vague wording of the rules. This is despite AC Types already being defunct in many countries across the world.

Niglon’s Commercial Director Paul Dawson says the wording of the original

18th edition regulations was open-ended, meaning there had been no huge upsurge in customer demand for A Types, and many in the industry felt there was no real clarity around the definition of a ‘standard’ installation.

“The draft Amendment 2 states A Type devices must be used where a circuit may be impacted by a direct residual current – so, although these changes aren’t yet in force, we took the decision to switch production at the start of 2021” Comments Paul.

Overcurrent Protective Device Regulation 536.4.202 in the 18th edition specifies the design current should not exceed the rated current of the assembly, taking any diversity and loading factors in to account. Currently, using diversity factors to calculate the correct selection of Residual Current Devices and other circuit protection devices is acceptable – but in the draft amendments, it is clarified that both RCDs and Switch Isolators should be protected by an Overcurrent Protective Device, selected according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This is because neither have inbuilt overload protection.

Paul says the Niglon team was advising customers to only use RCDs within a consumer unit which had a current value equal to or greater than that of the electrical supply company’s upstream main cut out fuse, to ensure their installations

met the new requirements when they came into force.

Paul adds: “Over the past few years, there has been a big change in the types of installations which the electrical industry’s contractors are typically undertaking. More homes now have installations such as electric vehicle charging points and hot tubs, which is creating an increased power demand on our electrical supply; additionally, new electricity supply connections are now most commonly 80A or 100A, and lots of older 63A supplies are now being upgraded.

“Because of this, we have discontinued our 63A Residual Current Devices within consumer units, moving production to only 80A and 100A RCD options.”

Getting certified With changes likely to impact the products being used by installers, Paul and the team are also reiterating their calls about the importance of certification.

“We are seeing a real rise in untested components on the markets,” he explains. “And with many installers, especially those currently using AC Type RCDs, likely to be switching products ahead of the regulation changes, we want to remind people of the devastating , and potentially fatal, consequences if an untested product fails.

“As well as championing third-party independent testing as standard for these important devices, we are also calling for total transparency around which products have been thoroughly tested. We would love to see it being standard protocol for proof of certification to be requested every time a new product is sold to a wholesaler or contractor.

“It’s not something which can, or should, be left to chance as there is no way of knowing when or if these products will fail.

The risk can be eliminated with proper testing, and nobody wants a disaster to happen, so waiting and doing nothing until something goes wrong is simply not an option.

THE AIRBORNE IDENTITY A raft of research confirms Covid-19 is airborne and the positive effect of ventilation in tackling transmission. Jenny Smith, Head of Marketing at Vent-Axia, explains more on using ventilation to fight Covid-19 and how electrical wholesalers are ideally placed to act as a source of information for their customers.

M

aintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) and reducing Covid transmission are essential both at home and when in pubs, gyms and other indoor environments where transmission rates are far higher than outdoors.

Ventilation is vital to help reduce Covid19 transmission. Public Health England guidance acknowledges airborne transmission can occur in ‘poorly ventilated’ spaces. Add to this the Government’s public information campaign which highlights how ventilating indoor spaces can reduce the risk of coronavirus infection by over 70%1 and it’s clear that improving ventilation is key.

Electrical wholesalers have stayed open during lockdown to provide an essential service. As well as supplying installers with vital ventilation products, they are also able to keep electricians up to date with the latest information on tackling Covid-19 with ventilation. Fortunately, Vent-Axia has produced a helpful brochure which brings together guidance and information on using ventilation to reduce virus transmission, which can be used by wholesalers to educate their customers.

Effective ventilation While many people are opening windows to reduce virus transmission, using extractor fans removes the virus more quickly. This is highlighted in the Government’s recent public information film ‘Hands. Face. Space’2. So, when electricians are evaluating existing ventilation, wholesalers can advise on the best solutions to achieve sufficient ventilation, if needed, to reduce the potential concentration of virus in the air.

Ventilation helps reduce indoor pollution and transmission risk by bringing in fresh air and exhausting stale, potentially virus-laden, air. The higher the airflow, the more effective the ventilation will be in

reducing transmission. Therefore, wholesalers should always recommend that ventilation systems are set up to maximise the amount of fresh air in a room and, essentially, that air is not re-circulated.

Systems should always supply as much outside air as possible.

With a wide range of domestic and commercial ventilation solutions available, what should wholesalers be recommending to their customers that both improve IAQ and also help reduce viral transmission?

Domestic solutions First up is whether it’s for retrofit or new build. For retrofit it’s a straightforward job to upgrade existing ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens and other ‘wet’ rooms.

Here there are three good options to recommend. The latest intermittent extractor fans, triggered either by a humidistat or light switch, are simple to install in place of an older fan. Alternatively, Single Room Heat Recovery (SRHR) uses the heat from the extracted stale air to warm up the incoming fresh air, providing ventilation whilst also saving energy.

Meanwhile, Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) pushes out any stale air and replaces it with filtered air from outside, increasing the circulation of fresh air and improving IAQ. For electricians working on new builds, wholesalers can recommend whole house ventilation. MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery) is a whole house

ventilation system that continuously supplies filtered air and extracts continuously at a low rate, with a boost facility when required meeting Building Regulations Part F System 4.

Commercial solutions When advising electricians working in gyms and pubs, ease of installation and replacement are important factors – making not only the installers life easier but also helping reassure business owners that upgrading ventilation isn’t a big job.

Modern extract/supply fans are ideal for supplying extra airflow and can easily be retrofitted to reliably supply effective ventilation whilst being energy efficient, helping reduce running costs. For example, Vent-Axia’s Lo-Carbon T-Series Fan range offers high performance ventilation with low running costs.

Alternatively, if a customer is investing in a whole ventilation system upgrade, Demand Energy Recovery Ventilation (D-ERV) systems have sophisticated controls and sensors that can be used to easily adapt a system to the new Covid-19 requirements, providing ventilation appropriate to occupant needs.

For instance, Vent-Axia’s Sentinel Totus² DERV has a range of sensors, such as CO2,

PIR occupancy detection, humidity or temperature to determine the room’s air quality, adjusting the ventilation requirements automatically and managing the system’s ventilation rates accordingly.

With aerosol transmission confirmed and the Government repeatedly suggesting ventilation as a way to reduce transmission indoors, it’s clear that effective ventilation is essential in the fight against Covid-19.

Wholesalers can make a real difference for homes and businesses by suggesting the right kind of ventilation for each job that will provide enough airflow to dilute the virus in the air and improve IAQ. 1 SAGE EMG paper, ‘Role of Ventilation in Controlling SARS-COV2 Transmission’.

The value of 70% is based on modelled risks within table 3 in the EMG paper.

Increasing the ventilation rate from 1 litre per second per person (very low ventilation rate) to 10 litres per second per person (recommended ventilation rate in standards for many buildings) gives a reduction in relative risk between 68% and 86% depending on the viral emission rate and the duration of exposure. This is based on models and is subject to uncertainties.

However, the relative influence of ventilation on the removal of airborne contaminants is well understood.

FRESH AIR Ventilation has become a key concern in our buildings. It has progressed from the primary concerns around condensation and mould prevention, to reducing overheating in the more air tight new homes we began to build in response to the Code for Sustainable Homes. Ventilation in our homes, as a result, has never been more important and is a growth area that wholesalers can tap into, as Domus Ventilation explains.

Air pollution According to NHS England, pre pandemic, 30% of preventable deaths in England are due to non-communicable diseases specifically attributed to air pollution.

Particulate matter, notably PM2.5 and NOx, are the biggest threats outside, and inside as these particles can easily enter our homes around closed doors. This has been sadly brought to the fore by the recent recognition of air pollution as a cause of a person's death for the very first time in the UK, and possibly the world.

Ventilation solutions Whilst extract fans in bathrooms and kitchens provide a basic level of ventilation and are low in cost, they are only one step above opening a window. They may be something that you are used to stocking and selling, but profit margins are low. For a more effective solution, and one that represents a far greater business opportunity for wholesalers, whole house mechanical ventilation solutions can’t be beaten, especially if it’s a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system.

MVHR combine supply and extract ventilation in one system. They work on the principle of extracting and re-using waste heat from ‘wet rooms’ (kitchens, bathrooms, utility spaces). They efficiently pre-warm the fresh air drawn into the building with waste stale air using a heat exchanger. The filtered, pre-warmed air is then distributed around the home, effectively meeting part of the heating load in energy efficient dwellings. Domus Ventilation’s new HRXE-HERA and HRXE-

A lower cost, easier to install alternative to MVHR that you might want to consider,

Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) systems are also available. These actively extract air from wet rooms via ducting to a central ventilation unit which exhausts to the atmosphere. The systems are typically two speed, providing low speed, continuous trickle ventilation and highspeed boost flow. Replacement fresh air is drawn into the property via background ventilators located in the habitable rooms and through air leakage.

Filtering out pollution Whole house mechanical ventilation systems are effective in distributing fresh air throughout the home. But in more polluted areas, such as cities, bringing air into the home also brings in dangerous pollutants, especially if the property is located near a busy road. In these instances, ventilation has to be combined with filtration. The Domus Ventilation NOX-FILT, for example, works on the supply leg of the ducting system of a mechanical ventilation system and prevents up to 99.5% of NO² pollution from entering a home. There are two units in the range with the second one having the added benefit of a PM2.5 pre-filter. This not only provides customers with an effective solution but is also a good upsell opportunity.

Consider expanding your ventilation range and knowledge from basic extract fans to mechanical ventilation to take advantage of this growth sector.

Robin Francis, Managing Director at National Ventilation, explains how the Green Homes Grant and good ventilation go hand in hand, how wholesalers can help and why ventilation is so important.

aunched in September 2020, the aim of the Green Homes Grant is to help boost the uptake of energy saving home improvements. This will be important for helping reach the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. So how can wholesalers get involved?

There have been a number of changes to the scheme since its launch, so wholesalers are well positioned to keep installers up to date with the scheme. In addition, the Green Homes Compliance Scheme signposts suitable products, so wholesalers can be sure what to stock and suggest to electricians working on projects with a Grant.

The Grant Grant vouchers can be used to cover up to two-thirds of the cost of works up to £5,000 or up to £10,000 for low-income households.

The work must include at least one primary measure such as improved insulation or low carbon heating. Then a secondary measure can be added such as triple glazing, draught

proofing, heating controls and, importantly, improving or repairing controlled ventilation under ‘reasonable enabling work to support the retrofit’.

The original deadline for improvements was March 2021 but this has now been extended to March 2022. Another change is that electricians who want to undertake work under the Grant no longer need to be registered with TrustMark, making the scheme accessible to all installers. However, work must still be carried out in accordance with Publicly Available Specification Standards (PAS 2030).

The important role of ventilation When making energy efficiency improvements under the scheme (or at any other point), ventilation should not be overlooked. When a home is made more airtight to improve energy efficiency it can no longer ‘breathe’ to allow polluted and stale air to escape the house. This will result in poor indoor air quality (IAQ), condensation and mould if ventilation is not improved at

the same time to extract polluted, moist air.

The essential role of ventilation in a healthy home has thankfully been recognised by the Government as part of this scheme. Therefore, wholesalers’ customers will be keen to get involved and ensure effective ventilation is installed in households taking advantage of a Grant.

This is also in-line with Building Regulations where a home’s IAQ must not be made worse by adding energy efficiency measures under the scheme.

When installers visit a wholesaler for advice on a cost-effective route to compliance within the scheme, a good recommendation is to install intermittent extract fans of the right size in ‘wet’ rooms.

It’s also important to ensure fresh air enters the building through background ventilators without causing draughts.

Compliant products To make things simple for wholesalers the Green Homes Compliance Scheme has

been launched. This provides guidance on how to ensure sufficient ventilation in a home when air tightness has been improved. It also has the added benefit of helping wholesalers easily identify suitable products to stock and supply, from companies like National Ventilation. These accredited products carry the Green Homes Compliance badge which demonstrates that fans will meet Building Regulations requirements and deliver effective ventilation. This also gives extra peace of mind for wholesalers, and installers alike, that legal requirements have been met.

Ventilation solutions When recommending a fan for a project, it’s vital that it will extract air at a sufficient rate when installed to remove polluted air whilst overcoming any resistance to airflow from ducts or grilles etc. But what else is there to consider?

Installers will be keen to use fans that offer ease of installation, reliability, effectiveness, quiet operation and that

can also be installed safely in the splash zone, making fans with these features ideal to stock. For example, National Ventilation’s Monsoon Zone 1 Silence range provides high extraction rates with low energy use, a low SFP, and exceptionally quiet running levels of just 22dB(A). HOME IS WHERE THE SMART IS Peter Alexander, Head of Retail Sales UK & Ireland for LEDVANCE, looks at how smart lighting systems can improve how we live and how wholesalers can be a part of providing that service.

L

EDVANCE estimates that more than 60% of Europeans possess smart products, or plan to acquire one in the near future.

Wholesalers will certainly have seen this demand reflected in their sales of smart lighting technology. Though the benefits of smart lighting systems have previously wowed business customers and facilities mangers, we are noting interest from an increasing number of private customers who want to integrate Smart lighting automation functions into their residential areas.

The choice of products they have at their fingertips is amazing – smart lamps in a wide variety of shapes, smart luminaires, products for indoor and outdoor use or plugs for integrating conventional light sources into more advanced systems. Using Bluetooth, ZigBee, an app, or simply their own voice, users can control the lights in another room or even in their garden, without needing to get up from the couch. Lights can be switched on when users arrive home with armfuls of shopping, and the desperate search in the dark for a light switch will soon be a thing of the past. However, convenience is far from the only reason why more homeowners should consider switching to smart lighting systems.

Good mood Firstly, the home has many varying demands of its space, and mood lighting can accommodate this. Hospitality facilities use smart lighting to adapt areas to suit different moods – perhaps dimmed, blueish lighting for a spa or bright lights for a meeting room. Smart lighting allows for the easy creation of different lighting scenarios, which could be just as beneficial to the home. For instance, homeowners may want to programme a relaxing colour scheme for hosting a party, or bright lights to help wake for work during the dark winter mornings.

Staying secure There is also the question of home security.

In January 2019, the consumer research site ‘Which?’ compiled a survey of 1,330 members which asked about their home security features. Only 34% used timers to control indoors lights when away from home, which is surprising given just how much of an effective deterrent this measure can be. Though many homeowners choose to leave all the lights on in their residence when leaving it unoccupied for long periods of time, this can be just as obvious to potential intruders. Instead, home presence simulation can turn the lights on and off at certain times of the day, giving the house a much more ‘lived-in’ look.

Many smart lighting systems even have a ‘randomising’ mode specifically designed for home security purposes.

Cost benefits As household bills become an everincreasing burden on family expenses, improved energy efficiency with automated smart lighting may be a very welcome aspect of a home installation. There’s a number of reasons why such efficiency is

achieved. Firstly, smart lighting requires transitioning to LED luminaires, which are more efficient than traditional incandescent light bulbs. Too many homes are lagging behind and still using yesterday’s lighting, at the expense of reduced financial cost.

Secondly, lights that are not on all the time, and tailored to individual requirements, provide excellent energy savings. This goes beyond luminaires which turn themselves off when a room or floor of a house is unoccupied. Consider also the energy wasted by outdoor lights, which illuminate the property for several hours unnecessarily in the early hours of the morning before someone wakes up to switch them off.

Smart lighting systems achieve ultimate energy efficiency by protecting themselves against our own human inefficiency.

With businesses and facilities managers already benefitting from smart lighting, wholesalers must now be ready to help ‘re-home’ these systems into the residential sector.

Fluorescent battens have long been the stalwart of commercial and industrial installations but LED technology brings a whole host of new benefits which are a great selling point for wholesalers, writes Scott Brewer, Head of Technical at Knightsbridge.

T

he humble fluorescent batten has come a long way since American electrical engineer and inventor Peter Cooper Hewitt and German physicist Leo Arons pioneered the first mercury vapour lamps in 1901. The fluorescent tube, with which we are all familiar, came into being 30 years later when a phosphor coating was added to the inside of the tube to improve the quality of the light output.

LED is the future and the way forward, offering superior performance across a whole range of metrics – efficiency, cost, design, and most importantly, speed of installation. The LED lighting market is reputed to be worth around £2.4 billion according to researchers IBISWorld, and the demand is unlikely to wane given the advances we are currently seeing.

The future of battens So what does this new generation of LED battens look like? And what do they offer your customers in the way of features and benefits? Probably the first thing to say is

that dimensions-wise, LED battens are available in the same sizes as their fluorescent predecessors, making them ideal for retrofit installations, while not forgetting their potential for new-build environments. For example, our new fastfix LED batten range comes in lengths of 2, 4, 5 and 6ft – making them attractive to customers for a range of installations.

The next benefit is the sheer efficiency that LED battens are capable of, with lamps producing upwards of 120lm/w eclipsing the typical 40-100 lm/w from, say, a conventional T5 or T8 lamp. In addition, the quality of light is generally better and the light distribution is improved, reducing unwanted glare which can be disruptive in office or commercial situations.

Multi purpose As with many electrical products, the adoption of electronics has helped improve not only efficiency but also the versatility of LED battens. Now you can expect to see LED battens that have an emergency lighting function, or a sensor control that detects movement with all the additional environmental and cost benefits that technology brings. Keeping compliant One final consideration when it comes to stocking LED battens is compliance with ErP directives. The new ErP directive EU 2019/2020 and the energy efficiency labelling directive EU 2019/2015 was implemented on 25th December 2019, and will be enforced from 1st September 2021, replacing the old ErP directives EC 244/2009, EC 245/2009, EU 1194/2012, and Energy label directive EU 874/2012.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION Securing a home or business property from unwanted attention doesn’t necessarily mean investing in the very latest CCTV system. Exterior security lighting can provide a simple to install and affordable way of enhancing home and business security. Neil Baldwin, Managing Director at ESP, looks at some of the options available.

F

or those clients with no external security measures in place to protect their properties, the installation of a simple camera and security floodlight system could be the answer to deterring unwanted intruders. There are a range of products available, such as a complete, all-in-one, energy-efficient, highperformance LED PIR floodlight system.

A combined security camera and LED floodlight like ESP’s GuardCam LED, for example, is suitable not just for securing domestic properties, but also for areas around offices and industrial or agricultural units. These systems are straightforward to install by simply connecting to the mains power, fixing to the wall and setting the time and date via the supplied SD card.

Once switched on it will detect an intruder, floodlight the area, and initiate a High Definition video recording directly to an internal SD card. If selected, an audible warning can be delivered, and users have the ability to record their own warning message.

Smart solutions For a more sophisticated solution there are Wi-Fi versions available that offers the additional benefit of remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet. The GuardCam Deco for example is a combined Wi-Fi security camera and LED floodlight system, which has been designed with ease of set up as a key feature. The remote monitoring function via smartphone or tablet is available using ESP’s specially developed ESP Smart app.

With a built-in camera that offers full 1080p HD live viewing and recording, this type of security camera and floodlight system is an ideal all-in-one solution for domestic and commercial applications.

On approaching the unit, it will detect the intruder with proven PIR technology at a distance of up to 10 metres from the unit.

It will floodlight the area, initiate a video recording and provide the user with an option to deliver a two-way audio message or activate the inbuilt alarm warning. It features an adjustable 16W high-intensity LED Security Lamp (3,000k colour light and 800 lumen) and you can remotely dim or turn on/off the LED lamp via the app. It will record up to 200, twenty-second video sessions onto the supplied 8GB storage,

and this is expandable up to 64GB. GuardCam LED Wi-Fi has the option to deliver motion activation notifications via the app whilst recording the activation.

The user friendly app also allows recordings to be accessed. The integral High Definition digital camera offers wide angle camera view and clear image recording in video format. Night images retain colour and clarity due to the automatic LED light illumination.

Stylish lighting For other projects, it may be that exterior lighting is required simply to light up areas to the front, back or side of a property to make access around these areas safe during the dark. If this is the case, there are a number of options for a good quality LED floodlighting provision. Today there are slimline low energy LED floodlights available that are meeting the growing trend for a stylish, more aesthetic lighting solution than the bulky options often associated with floodlights.

A range like ESP’s NightHawk Plus offers a choice of wattage/lumen outputs to ensure a solution for a broad range of applications, from small walkways, through to large gardens and work yards.

The range offers 10W/800 lumen, 20W/1600 lumen, 30W/2,400 lumen and 50W/4,000 lumen fittings, with each one available as a straightforward floodlight and as a PIR version.

The standard fitting is switched on and off manually or can be wired into an external device – such as a digital timer – and is suitable where control of the lighting system is preferred. The built-in PIR sensor fitting provides added security, and it comes with predefined settings – range, Lux level and the trigger time duration

parameters – for ease of use.

The fittings are simple and straightforward to install using the adjustable bracket supplied. They each offer a 4,000K colour temperature which produces a cool white output and they feature a textured diffuser which helps prevent an intense glare and adds to the overall aesthetic design. Each product in the range is available in black or white to maximise the choice and appeal to suit all exteriors. The robust housings are IP65 rated.

Even where an existing external light or security light might be in place, chances are that it is old, corroded and out of order.

Yet, a fully functioning, replacement solution can be installed in no more than 15 minutes and without the need for additional cabling. This is an easy solution for your customers to sell to their clients.
