t the time of writing this viewpoint I am asking myself the question: where do we begin once this is all over? A pertinent question that I am sure is on the lips of every wholesaler across the country. I am hearing plenty of wholesale counters have stayed open during the Covid-19 pandemic in order to support essential building and maintenance projects. The long list of heroic workers extends beyond our fantastic NHS, police service, fire brigade, charities and beyond who are working so hard and bravely to keep the country running. Of course I am talking about the hard-working electricians, builders, plumbers and many more that are ensuring the maintenance of hospitals and other key buildings are running safely and conforming to relevant building standards. Not to mention the band of construction workers that put a herculean effort into putting together field hospitals in London and other strategic locations across the country. Not one for meaningless platitudes and patriotic rhetoric, it truly has been humbling to see the whole country come together in the fight against the virus. Building and maintaining the infrastructure of the United Kingdom falls on the construction industry and it will be called upon once again when we get through the other end of this unprecedented situation we find ourselves in. The government, love them or hate them – I’ll try to keep my political affiliation out of this one – is responding in order to help those businesses that are finding themselves in troubled waters due to the impact the protective measurements are having on the economy. Social distancing (at the time of writing this) does seem to be having the desired impact in regards to reducing the spread of infections, and ultimately, deaths. However it is far too early to know how successful these measures are and indeed how much they will achieve their goal in the long run. These measures have resulted in many wholesale branches being shut down due to a slowdown in trade, from housebuilders, property developers, contractors and electricians having to furlough staff, seeing their sites shut down or seeing their customer base rethink the non-essential upgrades in their homes. The impact the virus is having doesn’t seem to have any limits in the scope of industries it has disrupted in recent weeks and months – and the construction industry certainly is no different. The protection being put in place to help businesses through this rough patch is far-reaching. Could you ever have envisaged a Tory Government printing money and paying 80% of the payroll for businesses struggling to make ends meet? Me neither. Like it or not, the socialism experiment has begun – in an economic sense at least, and it looks like we have a few months yet of the state propping up the private sector. Of course this is not a time for partisan bellyaching, nailing your colours to the mast is not important: red, blue, yellow or green we are all in this together. Like many of you reading this, we are not exempt from the effects of Covid-19 and its farreaching consequences. We have been forced to make some tough decisions, but along with the help of a loyal band of advertisers, we have decided to put together a May issue. Throughout this crisis we feel it is important to keep electrical wholesalers, and the wider army of construction workers at all levels, informed and as up to date on the latest happenings as possible.

as possible. The situation seems to change on an almost hourly basis at the moment, so please visit our website: wwww.pewholesaler.co.uk to get the latest news. The regular updates include information on applying for Business Interruption Loans, advice from various electrical bodies and guidance on the Job Retention Scheme. It also includes news from the number of manufacturers who are doing their bit to provide products and solutions for the NHS as it expands its operations during the pandemic. It is important to keep in mind that we will get through this and continue life as ‘normal’ – whatever that means now, and the country will once again rely on the builders, electricians, plumbers and more to get the country moving again. Your skills and knowledge will be more important than ever during and after this crisis. Maintaining, improving and building new infrastructure, from transport, local authority buildings, energy supply systems and a whole lot more – the distribution networks are going to be heavily relied upon and you and your team will play a vital role in getting things moving again. We are also acutely aware of the damage the on-going situation is having on the mental health of many people. It is a really unsettling time, and fearing the unknown and worrying about what impact this is having on your business can be all-consuming and it’s totally normal to feel this way. The Electrical Industries Charity does some fantastic work for everyone that is involved in the electrical industry, including supporting people with financial, practical and mental health support. They can be found at: www.electricalcharity.org. I would recommend taking a look if you feel you need to talk about any of the above. This issue looks at circuit protection and security. We take a look at some of the latest technology being used in residential builds to keep inhabitants safe within their home, including CCTV and intercom systems as part of a smart home. We also look at how you can deliver highquality circuit protection devices that can keep your customers safe whilst also protecting your margins. Keeping up to date on the latest industry trends and technology will keep you informed for when you are called upon to serve your country in whatever way you can. Remember that bit I said about patriotic rhetoric? Maybe I’m changing my mind when I think about all the good we can do when we come together in times of adversity, and in the next few months and maybe even longer – your purpose will be clear. SCOLMORE COMMITS TO PRODUCT DATA POOL
SCOLMORE EDATA FOUNDER MEMBERS Scolmore Group is one of 15 manufacturers and 10 wholesalers who has signed up as Founder Members of EDATA, a new ‘by the industry for the industry’ product data pool. EDATA is the latest strategic initiative from the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) under its EDA Data Services banner. E-commerce and digital transformation are inextricably linked to the availability of the highest quality product data, and EDATA offers manufacturers a central ‘single source of truth’ resource for uploading product information, technical data and images which wholesalers can download and serve up on their customer-facing e-commerce channels. Martyn Walley (pictured), Group Technical Director with Scolmore Group, says: “We are delighted to have been invited to be a
founding member and get involved in this latest initiative from the EDA. We welcome any opportunity to help provide a valuable resource to the wholesaler.” EDATA currently holds information in three categories: Manufacturer Master Data, the core data needed to identify a product; Digital Assets such as images and data sheets; and Technical Attributes including dimensions, suitability and performance characteristics. The Technical Attributes held in EDATA will be structured in accordance with ETIM, the international data model for the standardisation and classification of technical product data, enabling wholesalers to enhance their websites with powerful product searches and filters. The EDA has led the ETIM initiative for the UK’s electro-technical sector since 2017.
EDA LAUNCHES COVID-19 HUB The EDA has launched an online hub at www.eda.org.uk for members and affiliates to access crucial information tailored to the sector. Central to the hub is a searchable listing of EDA wholesalers showing whether they are opened or closed during the COVID-19 lockdown. Most remain open but with an adapted service in line with Government health and safety guidelines. Also available is information and downloads including template letters and the official construction site operating procedures, plus useful signposting to other resources including Government financial support. To help those during the difficult financial period, there is a summary of the key features of the government’s financial support for businesses. There is also key information on the Job Retention Scheme for furloughed workers, where the HMRC will pay up to 80% of an employee’s wages up to £2,500 per month. Appreciating the efforts of its members during this difficult time, Margaret Fitzsimons, EDA CEO, says: “One of our key roles at this time is to ensure that the concerns of our members
are heard by Government and that we gain practical support for their businesses. In addition to surveying our members and holding weekly meetings of the EDA Board, we are also in regular communication with the trade associations of our supply chain partners to see how we can work together as an industry to make our voices heard. It’s not easy at the moment with so many industries clamouring for attention. However, we are having some success: our sector’s needs are communicated to the Government (the Dept for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) via the Construction Leadership Council (CLC). Government is listening and doing their best to help businesses. “As each new initiative is announced or revised we are interpreting it for our members and circulating it to them. This new online hub is the place where members can easily find the latest support and information we have available.” EDA members will also receive regular bulletins with news and updates surrounding the latest information relating to Covid-19.

FACE TO FACE
Established in Germany over 100 years ago, Wiska has a long history of developing solutions to make life easier for Installers. Here PEW caught up with Managing Director, Will Rich, who explains the opportunities he was given to grow throughout his career and how the company wants to pass that development opportunity on to the next generation.
FACE TO FACE WISKA Q
How did you get into the industry and your current position?
A. I was working for a computing company when I saw an advert for a position at a local lighting company, in their accounts department. I didn’t get the position but was offered one in their sales department. I was really lucky as the company was young and they gave me the opportunity to work in all aspects of the business, whilst supporting me to go to college and study. After around 10 years and being employed as Marketing Manager, I wanted to look for new opportunities. I worked for a number of years with successful emergency lighting & fire detection companies, working as a Sales Director and then Managing Director. The opportunity with WISKA came through a long-term friendship with the family, who are now third generation. They gave me the opportunity to setup WISKA UK with them. We have now celebrated 20 years.
Q
What has been your biggest challenge so far?
A. I’ve been involved in starting up a couple of company’s during my time in the industry but the early days of WISKA were possibly the most difficult, not only was the company not heard of, but the product was quite different to anything in the market at that time. I knew that the advantages of the range for Installers were there, so we persevered and eventually people began to understand the

Q
“ We have a very young team and it is important to help them develop and take the company forward into the future” innovative product we were offering. We are now a market leader and those days seem like yesterday – I always remind myself you are only as good as your last order.
Q
What do you consider WISKA’s unique selling points?
A. WISKA only manufactures and develops products that will give an advantage on installation. It is not our strategy to develop or offer a product that

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
A. I am still very ambitious and enjoy working in an industry where I have made many good friends over the years. We are very lucky to have a good team, over 40% of our staff were apprentices with the company and we try to give them the same opportunities I was given in my early career. It would be very nice to think of a slightly more relaxed time in 5 years’ time.
Q
What is WISKA trying to achieve in the next few years?
A. We have a lot of great new product ideas, which we are working on and see lots of opportunity in the market to develop these. We are not a company that wants to introduce fake products into the market to grow. It is important to us to develop our range and ranges within our sector to hopefully enhance our position as a market leader. We have a very young team and it is important to help them develop and take the company forward into the future.

SPECIAL REPORT
PROTECT AND SERVE The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations came into effect in January of this year, so it is vital that industry professionals throughout the supply chain and beyond gurantee the compliance of installations, says Deepak Sharad, Category Manager for final distribution at Schneider Electric.
T
hrough best practice, installers can ensure the highest levels of safety for their clients with a comprehensive system approach using a combination of miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current devices (RCDs) and residual current circuit breakers with over current protection (RCBOs). The new regulations further advise on Surge Protection Device (SPD) requirements and recommendations on Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) which help to increase safety as a means of providing additional protection against fires caused by arc faults.
Surge protection The updates focus on the requirement for SPDs and take into consideration possible transient voltages through the network supply. The 18th Edition now requires a surge protection risk assessment on installations in many cases, unless it is decided to install SPDs irrespective or there is an outright requirement to install them in the regulations. The risk assessment can potentially bring its own challenges, as the Calculated Risk Level formula involved requires identification of the lengths of high and low voltage overhead lines and underground cables in the last km of the supply network to the premises. Customer first When choosing products, it’s critical to ensure safe and compliant systems are selected that are tested and validated to the relevant standards and hold the correct certifications and markings.
Opting for trusted brands from reputable manufacturers, who provide the relevant technical documentation to support appropriate product standards, can help to safeguard the contractor and end client – bringing peace of mind to the installation. Care and attention should be taken with offer selection to avoid purchasing non-compliant products. These can pose a safety risk and may not be appropriate for UK markets or adhere to product and installation standards. Outside the box It’s sometimes tempting for customers to source and procure outside of recognised industry channels to save money. The reach of the internet can give contractors the opportunity to forgo the traditional supply chain and deal with a community of global sellers that could include unauthorised or unscrupulous suppliers. Non-compliant and counterfeit products

can pose significant risk and have serious consequences for people and property, as they may not provide adequate protection against fire or electrocution. Simple safety checks include inspecting the build quality and ensuring that key identifiers such as CE markings, manufacturer’s brand, rating and part numbers are present and have not been tampered with. Channels you can trust When purchasing from any given supply chain or purchasing platform, it’s crucial that the buyer can trust that the goods they are receiving are not only compliant for the UK market, but that they are also genuine. Manufacturers, distributors and installers alike are responsible for maintaining a safe and robust industry. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

CIRCUIT PROTECTION
LOCKDOWN SAFETY According to the latest statistics from Electrical Safety First, there are 379 injuries or fatalities per year in England from electrical distribution. For electrical wholesalers, the opportunity is clear: safe isolation kits are an important piece of equipment for professional electricians and 80% of customers still need to purchase one. This is a chance not only to generate sales, but potentially also to save lives.
M
ore alarming still, is a parallel statistic: only one in five electricians carries a safe isolation lock out/tag out kit to ensure that the isolated distribution network is not accidentally switched to live while they are still working. As a result, professionals who routinely work with live current and know how potentially fatal it can be, are often failing to protect themselves and their colleagues from accidents that could cause serious injury or death.
Where does the responsibility lie? Fundamentally, the issue of electric shocks caused by unsafe isolations results from poor safety behaviours on site. Part of this is due to workplace cultures. Young electricians entering the profession have been trained in safe isolations and anticipate using best practice on site but, in a busy commercial environment, under time pressure, experienced colleagues don’t always prioritise locking out and
tagging isolations to ensure they’re safe. As a result, poor safety behaviours are being perpetuated and electricians continue to put themselves, their colleagues, and others on site at risk. There is another element to the problem, however. While it’s the employer’s responsibility to ensure that each operative remains safe on site and enforce good safety behaviours, few contractors supply safe isolation kits in the same way they would expect to provide PPE. Nor do they make carrying a safe isolation kit a mandatory requirement across their team. As a result, the practice of locking out and tagging isolations on site is often not monitored by those in senior site-based roles and the message about the importance of safe isolations is not, therefore, endorsed. For electrical wholesalers, this means that the potential customer base for safe isolation kits ranges across the board. From young electricians who have recently
trained and see safe isolation as a routine element of their work, to more experienced professionals who have a duty of care to their junior colleagues, right up to companies with corporate responsibility for keeping their employees safe. Getting kitted up The need for increased vigilance and improved safety behaviours when it comes to safe isolations has prompted Ideal Industries to call for improved regulation and compliance on safe isolation of live electrical services to drive safety best practice and save lives. Accidental contact with part of the network that has inadvertently been switched back to live is, after all, an easily avoidable hazard. Ideal Industries has a wide range of safe isolation products that enable electricians to lock out isolations, including padlocks, hasps and lockout devices, along with re-useable tags. For additional protection against any residual current or accidental contact with live electrical supplies, the company also suggests that electrical contractors use IDEAL’s range of insulated tools. Ultimately, IDEAL has a range of electrical testing equipment which should also be used as part of a safe isolation process to verify isolation of the required area and check that there is no potentially dangerous residual current. CIRCUIT PROTECTION
SAFE ISOLATION Nick Hart, Head of Wholesale, Hylec-APL, talks to PEW about how you can deliver quality circuit isolation devices that protect customers and your margins.
W
hen it comes to protecting humans working in the trade, common sense and adherence to the safe working practices laid down by government bodies and trade organisations with regard to isolating electrical circuits is essential. However, the Health & Safety Executive still receives reports of injuries and deaths every year at work due to electrical shock. Responsible wholesalers can also play a major part in ensuring safety by ensuring products they sell adhere to the relevant, rigorous safety standards. Industrial settings The major market for electrical isolation devices is industrial, but other applications are likely to be found in commercial buildings, HVAC installations and for power supplies and security equipment. Particularly in an industrial setting, where there is a great deal of electrical machinery requiring inspection, cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting, specific rules should be in place laying down under which circumstances electrical isolation is required and the procedures to be followed. At a minimum, the Health & Safety Executive states: “…the isolator should be
locked in position (for example by a padlock), and a sign should be used to indicate that maintenance work is in progress. Isolation requires use of devices that are specifically designed for this purpose – not devices such as keylockable emergency stops or other types of switches that may be fitted to the machine. Any stored energy (hydraulic or pneumatic power, for instance) should also be dissipated before the work starts.” Repeat business From a wholesaler’s perspective, there are a number of factors generally considered when deciding which circuit isolation products to stock: adherence to relevant standards, price, aesthetics, robustness, delivery and customer service from the manufacturer, and ease of use for the installer are all important. Brand is often
16 MAY 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
the last consideration. Margin for the wholesaler is particularly crucial, but need not take precedence over enhancing your reputation for supplying excellent, value for money products in order to build a loyal customer base and ensure repeat business. Hylec has seen a significant increase in wholesale sales volumes in early 2020, based on offering ‘best everyday price’ to wholesalers – a strategy of consistent pricing. We have recognised that it is not always possible for the wholesale trade to coincide its ordering requirements with special price promotions. In addition, as a UK manufacturer and supplier, we are able to offer next day delivery, UKbased telephone ordering, as well as online. Isolator safety With regard to circuit isolation devices, professional electrical contractors and installers require products which make their lives easier, and Hylec’s ROTARY

ISOLATOR range combines a compact footprint with generous internal dimensions, so there is space to manipulate cables during installation. ROTARY ISOLATOR switches separate the circuit from the main power source and discharge any current trapped in the circuit, rendering the connected machine safe to work on, and ensuring fast shut down and the absence of any electrical current when an emergency stop is required. When used as an emergency stop, ROTARY ISOLATOR switches can be locked in the off position using a padlock. For safety, the switch is interlocked with the lid to prevent opening while in the ‘on’ position. Manufactured from completely flame retardant polycarbonate, rated to UL94V0, ROTARY ISOLATOR control switches provide an additional margin of safety with an excellent flame-resistance rating. Internally, the mechanism features silverplated alloy contacts for high reliability.
Margin for the wholesaler “is particularly crucial, but need not take precedence over enhancing your reputation for supplying excellent, value for money products in order to build a loyal customer base and ensure repeat business.
”
ROTARY ISOLATOR control switches are a robust and well-designed range, suitable for the vast majority of commercial and particularly industrial situations. In the AC range, models are available from 20A to 80A, and in the DC range, 16A, 25A and 32A. They are IP66-rated and completely prevent the ingress of dust and dirt, as well as being able to withstand powerful
jets of water, vital in many factory and commercial applications where environmental dust and the need for machinery washdown are factors, such as the food and beverage industries. Wholesale package For the wholesale trade, pricing is particularly keen on the AC range 20A, 25A and 32A models, with a minimum 20% and as much as 40% saving as compared to similar competitive products. Across the range, we aim to be 20% better than our competitors. Apart from really well-designed products, we have made our packaging as environmentally-friendly as possible, using recyclable cardboard so there is very little or no plastic to dispose of. SURGING DEMAND Mike Lawrence, UK Marketing Manager for Commercial Buildings Sector at Hager, discusses some of the key considerations around transient overvoltage and how the wholesale market can help provide guidance for surge protection solutions.
O
ne of the outcomes of the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulation changes was an increased focus on equipment protection against surge transient voltages. The regulations now state why and where a surge protection device should be fitted, while clarifying that it is the responsibility of the electrical designer to ensure the installation is compliant within the new regulations. 18th Edition and BS EN 61439 Proving credible evidence that assemblies remain compliant with BS EN 61439 often requires additional testing, or can be achieved by calculation or derivation, where additional devices are added to the assembly. SPDs are not ‘watt loss’ generating devices, but nevertheless, take up space in the distribution board and could affect thermal testing results of the complete assembly.
Installation variables SPDs are designed to limit overvoltage from surge voltage transients in electrical systems by diverting them to Earth. Section 443 of the wiring regulations provides guidance for the rated impulse voltages for overvoltage categories and includes further guidance on the type of SPD required to protect equipment. However, the technical data that indicates the level of potential let through Voltage Up that the SPD achieves is derived by testing the SPD in ideal conditions. Installation variables, which could include

”
the length and type of conductors used to connect the SPD to the electrical system, bends in cables, the location of the SPD and effectiveness of earth conductors, all affect the actual level of protection (Up effective) that the electrical system sees, downstream of the SPD. These installation variables can combine, with the potential for a significantly higher Up value and therefore a significantly lower level of protection of sensitive electrical equipment. Poor integration of the SPD can easily result in a measured let through Up value that leaves end equipment vulnerable to transient overvoltage. With a verified level of performance achieved through development testing, specifiers and installers of electrical distribution boards are now able to provide a greater level of assurance that the SPD, designed to protect end equipment from damage, has been integrated to achieve the highest level of protection.

CIRCUIT PROTECTION
New SPD solutions The wholesale supply base can play an important role in assisting the electrical trade to make the most appropriate choice about surge protection. To help them, Hager has developed new surge protection kits for its distribution board solutions that provide peace of mind for installers. By Fitting a Hager SPD solution, the installer will have gone beyond basic compliance, with the installation afforded a ‘validated’ level of overvoltage protection. To guide the wholesaler, some of the key features and benefits include integrated solutions for panel boards, these SPD solutions have now evolved to enable direct integration of Hager surge protection kits to provide optimum surge protection performance. The panel board designs have been updated to enable all kits to fit within the distribution board as opposed to being in a separate enclosure. This solution provides the shortest connections to the surge protection device from the incoming supply and, where
required, the SPD itself includes internal back-up fuse protection. Solid copper earth links also help achieve a best in class Up effective performance. CT2 type arrangements To conform to Section 534 of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, in relation to UK Earthing systems compatibility, the new Hager surge protection kits are CT2 type arrangements. Secondary upstream protection devices The need for secondary upstream protection devices is removed, for example, a four-way TPN board retains the ability to be used for four TP ways rather than only three due to the SPD requiring one dedicated way.
SPD kits for TPN boards Hager’s Type 1 SPD kits have been tested to ensure they work effectively in conjunction with Type 2 SPD kits, in a downstream TPN board. With the 18th Edition advising that SPDs should be selected from a single manufacturer to ensure they work together; Hager has gone further with verified testing ensuring effective co-ordination. All sizes of Hager 125A TPN boards are now also available with main incomer and SPD factory fitted as a standard product. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

THE
SMART
CHOICE Here, Dave Enefer of Electrium discusses how Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) provide a critical additional layer of protection against arc faults and electrical fires.
A
cross the UK, thousands of electrical fires occur in domestic settings every year. One of the causes of electrical fires is arc faults. These arc faults can originate from poorly made terminations, insulation faults in damaged cables and leads, or old, worn cable insulation. These arcing conditions can cause overheating and lead to ignition of cable insulation and surrounding combustible materials. In an effort to minimise the likelihood of fires originating from this type of fault, the Wiring Regulations (BS7671, 18th edition) now include AFDDs as the recommended way of providing additional protection against fire caused by arc faults in AC final circuits, thus setting out new standards for electrical installations in the UK. These regulations require designers and installers to ensure that installations are arranged to reduce the risk of ignition from insulation faults, high temperatures or electric arc, subsequently protecting people and property against the risk of fires that may be generated and propagated in electrical installations. As a result, the requirement for AFDDs is already on the rise amongst installers – making it critical for wholesalers to stock solutions that provide such additional levels of electrical safety.
Extra protection In order to prevent fires stemming from electrical fault conditions, AFDDs monitor the arcing conditions in order to detect faults before ignition occurs. This type of device has been broadly used in countries like the USA for several years, where there has been a noted reduction of fires originating from such conditions. Following suit, a number of EU countries have also mandated the use of AFDDs in an effort to reduce fires from electrical faults. While Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) are critical devices in preventing circuits from overcurrent, short circuit and earth leakage conditions, they are not capable of detecting arc faults – and that leaves a critical gap in the safety provision. AFDDs bridge this gap in safety, but early models were two modules wide and took up too much space in an already crowded consumer unit, effectively limiting widespread uptake of the device. Crabtree has overcome this problem and are leading the way with the Starbreaker combined AFDD-RCBO. An innovative product from Crabtree, it integrates arc fault detection with RCD and MCB capability in a revolutionary single DIN module. Delivering maximum protection in the minimum footprint, and fully catering for the relevant requirements
20 MAY 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
and recommendations of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Importantly, Starbreaker AFDDs protect against both serial and parallel arc faults, providing an extra layer of protection against the risks from arc faults. Current and future requirements Using digital technology to constantly monitor circuit conditions, the Starbreaker Mini AFDD is able to distinguish between ‘operational sparking’ – for example, in washing machines and vacuum cleaner motors – and abnormal activity that could denote a potentially dangerous event. Complying fully with, and exceeding, the requirements of BS7671, this single module AFDD is a two-pole switching device which isolates any faulty circuit or appliance, ensuring complete peace of mind for installers, homeowners and investors. As an additional benefit, the Starbreaker Mini AFDD-RCBO is an easy to fit ‘plug and play’ option that can be installed into any appropriate Starbreaker consumer unit, without the need for special assembly or new busbars. So, whatever the age of the Starbreaker unit, the Mini AFDD slots easily into place, making it equally suitable for new builds, upgrades and retrofits, to provide additional protection.

SECURITY
TACKLING TOOL THEFT
T
he very fact that tradespeople routinely fix signs to their vehicles stating that ‘no tools are left in the van overnight’ highlights how much of an issue tool theft has become. The electrical sector, where an electrician’s ability to do the job depends on a range of high value tools, is no exception.
A significant issue According to research based on figures from police forces across the UK, tool theft from site costs almost £95 million each year, and the problem is getting worse. As equipment becomes more specialist and higher in cost, it becomes a more attractive target to thieves. Moreover, advances in equipment design often make tools more compact and lightweight too, so thieves find them easier to steal.
Michael Brown, Design Director at safety, security and materials handling equipment specialist, Metal and Modular, discusses the issue of tool theft and the products available to help prevent it. As their vehicles proclaim, few electricians would leave their tools in their vehicle overnight, but they cannot keep a constant watch over tools that are not in use while on site. Larger sites have site wide security but, regardless of this, opportunist thieves will find a way to access the site and take whatever is close at hand. Meanwhile, on smaller sites, the only defence against theft is often simply the vigilance of colleagues. In both scenarios, a tool vault or fittings cabinet provides the ideal solution for locking tools away securely when they are not in use on site. Metal and Modular has developed some innovative features for its range of tool vaults and fittings cabinets to increase the level of security they offer while providing increased functionality and convenience. Knock-on effects While the financial cost of replacing stolen tools is a significant enough problem, the compelling reasons to invest in a tool vault or fittings cabinet are actually much wider
22 MAY 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
because of the knock-on effects of theft. Without the right tools, an Electrician can struggle to continue with an installation, and finding replacements may involve a significant cost in terms of time as well as money. This could lead to delays on site, loss of earnings for days lost to inactivity, penalties for late handover or even contracharges if an alternative contractor has to be brought in to complete the job. Often, thieves will take more than one item or may simply take the battery from each of the cordless tools on site. Replacing one of these is onerous, replacing several at the same time could prove extremely difficult. Better by design Metal and Modular’s Tool Vaults have been designed to both prevent opportunist tool theft and discourage thieves, while ensuring all equipment is safe and conveniently stored for when it is needed. The range includes small, medium and large models to enable electrical contractors to choose the right option for their team.

The medium and large Tool Vaults have fiver-lever deadlocks and the small Tool Vault has two fixed padlocks or two Stainless Steel 6-pin Ultra Secure Cylinder Locks making all the units virtually impossible to access. Double returns on the edges of the anti-theft doors also ensure that the unit cannot be forced open with a crowbar. The units also have a cable opening to allow equipment to be charged securely when not in use and electricians can even use this to charge their mobile phone, keeping their personal property safe too. Available in standard and compact models, Metal and Modular’s Fittings Cabinet range has also been designed for secure storage and enables fittings and tools to be locked away in a single unit, with a lower shelf that can be locked in an upright position. The standard unit features anti-theft twin doors with two five-lever deadlocks, while the compact model has a single door and lock of the same high
security standard. These versatile units are fitted with shelves and durable storage bins to keep fittings neat and tidy, helping electricians find what they need quickly and easily and aiding stock checking. Both Cabinet models also have a cable opening for secure charging. All Metal and Modular’s Tool Vault and Fitting Cabinet products are manufactured
from heavy gauge and welded steel for added durability and come with recessed handles, fork lift slots and castors (if required) for ease of transportation and manoeuvrability. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

New innovations Gira will present new colour variants and network-based systems with individual configuration, through to DCS resources and optimal software updates in 2020. These new innovations support its current offering and include an update for the Gira DCS Mobile Door app. This version has created a new auto-image memory feature that reacts to activity at the door, and by using the Release 2 Gira DCS app, the user can view door calls on the mobile end device, talk to the person
at the door and if so desired, open the door directly: the first version only updated images twice every second over real-time. If the app is not active in the background, for example, after the mobile end device has been restarted, the door call will nevertheless reach the user. With push notifications, the user is informed of the incoming door call even when the Gira DCS app is ‘inactive/closed.’ This not only increases the battery performance of the smart device, but also means the user can accept a call at the door, even when the end device is locked. 1

Launched only last year, the Installer Scheme from security expert, ERA, has gone from strength to strength, with a healthy uptake from electricians. Here, the company talks about the benefits of upskilling installers.
THE MORE YOU KNOW
W
ith ever-growing demand for reliable people to fit traditional security products and smartware, the importance of installers is clear and ERA is committed to a meaningful business relationship to support its work. Furthermore, the company is keen to support the wholesale channel that will be providing these highly-skilled installers with quality ERA products. What is the Scheme? Put simply, the ERA Installer Scheme allows electricians, security specialists and other installers to be part of a wellpublicised and properly supported scheme that provides free training on the full features and benefits of ERA smartware products, including installation and correct set up with a customer. Not only that, ERA provides Installer Scheme members with marketing materials such as uniforms, van livery and stationery, exclusive special offers and ‘first look’ priority for brand new product lines, beta testing opportunities when they arise, and those all-important high quality leads for homeowners looking for the best installers that sell and set up the best security products to protect their property, keeping their families safe and sound. Tania Tams, Head of Marketing at ERA, comments: “We’re putting the ‘middle-man’ back in, which we feel is the best way for many installers to move forwards with their
business, especially smaller outfits and one-man-bands. When a homeowner wants an ERA product, ERA will match them up to an installer in their area. The installer, who will be fully trained in the product, can price up the job as normal – ERA acts as the matchmaker. “We have invested heavily in the promotion of the Installer Scheme, both locally and nationally, so as well as leads from the ‘top down’ in the form of installer support helplines, marketing materials, product training and promotions, our installers will also be getting crucial grass roots contacts as we match home and business owners with local installers.” Who can join? Designed to be fully inclusive, ERA’s new Installer Scheme is open to installers of traditional security products, smartware or both. In order to join, installers must produce their DBS certification, liability insurance documents (covered for £2 million) and complete a registration form agreeing to our terms and code of conduct.
28 MAY 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
What are the benefits of joining? ERA’s Installer Scheme offers a host of benefits for those joining. Once signed up via the website: www.erahomesecurity.com, members receive an initial start-up package which includes ERA Installer Van Decals in a choice of traditional or intruder alarm or Smartware branding, ERA Installer branded clipboard, pens, beanie hat and freepost feedback forms, that can be left with customers to encourage them to leave feedback. They will also be asked to leave feedback by email as well. Once the installer has received five ratings of five stars or above, which have been verified, the installer will receive a complete uniform package which can be ERA Installer or dual branded, worth £140, which includes polo shirts, sweatshirt, jacket and hat, available in black or navy with either the ERA logo or their own logo. Customer satisfaction Tania Tams adds: “The scheme is a huge investment from ERA and demonstrates

SECURITY
our commitment to supporting tradespeople and building a robust installer network. The scheme works to provide installers with marketing support, such as van decals, advertising and special offers. “Installers don’t have to worry about giving up their own identity when they join the ERA Installer Scheme – it’s all about partnership. The scheme has been designed to help installers improve their own individual brands by being associated with ERA. For example, when it comes to their profile page, the installer has full control over what information the customer reads about them and includes their company logo, any associated icons, background on their business, plus full contact details. “Adding to this investment, ERA also intends to heavily promote the scheme to householders who are demanding high quality tradespeople to help with the perceived complexities of fitting more sophisticated security products. “In addition, a ‘rate me’ process safeguards not only quality installers, but also homeowners, by providing feedback from customers, ensuring consistently high standards of work are achieved. Customer ratings, feedback and recommendations are an integral part of the customer journey in the ‘Go Compare’ world that we now live in, yet can be a very difficult service to provide and follow up for the average installer.” Free installer training In addition, ongoing product training is offered at ERA’s purpose-built HQ to ensure that installers are totally up to date with the latest technological developments. With an 85% practical component, that training offers hands on practise for installers and is receiving excellent feedback. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

A new generation of Surge Protection Devices brings improved quality and performance with ergonomically designed housings. Available from specialist distributor Switchtec is the new DAC/DDC range of AC and DC Surge Protection Devices from Citel. Available in Type 1, Type 2 & Type 3, for use with AC, DC and PV applications, the SPDs are suitable for use on all earthing systems including TN, TT/TN, TNS and TN-C-S. The SPDs are available in Single Pole, Single Phase, 3 Phase and 3 Phase & Neutral. Citel DIN rail mounted surge protectors are easy to install in any standardised distribution panel or control cabinets. With collaboration from Citel’s manufacturing and design locations in France, Germany, America and China, the new range was designed with key design features including security, performance, design & ergonomics, SPD knowledge and warranty. Extreme measures Citel has designed this range to meet the most extreme constraints, beyond that asked by the IEC/EN standards. In order to ensure total safety, the DAC/DDC series is designed to provide a safe disconnection, high resistance to fire and short circuit and is built with a high mechanical robustness. The DAC/DDC series utilises technology uniquely available to Citel, who are specialists in the manufacture of Gas Discharge Tubes (Gas Spark Gap), along with its own design of varistors to obtain the best performance and reliability for its SPDs. Ergonomic design Key performance features of the new DAC/DDC range include an improved ergonomic design, which incorporates a quick release retaining clip for the replaceable SPD modules. Traditionally the modules were retained by mechanical resistance alone, which made them difficult to remove. The new DAC/DDC uses a spring clip designed into the
modules housing which allows for quick and effortless module replacement. Further features include improved plastic materials used to increase the products strength and rigidity, whilst also taking into account environmental concerns with the use of Halogen-free plastics. A larger disconnection indicator allows the operator to easily and quickly identify if the SPD has come to End of Life. A green indicator displays a fully functioning SPD whilst a red indicator indicates immediate replacement required. This indicator is in conjunction with the built in remote signal output, a volt free contact, suitable for connection to an external signalling device. Improved identification is also provided by Citel’s use of colour coding the SPD modules, enabling the user to easily identify the SPD types and function, Grey for Type 1, Red Type 2, Blue Type 3, Orange for DC applications, and Green for Neutral/PE. Also included on the side of the SPD is a QR code which when scanned will link the user directly to the instruction manual for the product. Improved protection In order to improve the surge protection efficiency, CITEL has developed a patented technology that combines a high energy varistor (MOV) network and a specific gas tube (GSG). VG Technology is a specialised circuit incorporated in certain SPDs that can achieve a higher protection level, longer life duration (due to the suppression of leakage current), and continuous operation and power quality (no follow on current). www.rdr.link/wq017

IN SAFE HANDS Products from Scolmore’s Mode range of white moulded, antimicrobial wiring accessories, and the accompanying GridPro plates and modules range, were chosen to provide the solution at a recently expanded hospital unit.
O
pened earlier this year, the newly expanded Same Day Emergency Care Unit at Conquest Hospital in St Leonards is providing vital same day emergency care for patients who don’t require an overnight stay in hospital. Infection control is one of the biggest challenges facing the healthcare sector. Concern regarding cleanliness and healthcare associated infections (HCAI) continues to get headlines in the media, with the result that anyone operating within and supplying to this sector, is required to work with products that meet the demands for hygiene and safety, and that includes electrical products. The unit at the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust hospital has been expanded into a much larger, dedicated area and now has eight patient treatment cubicles and three treatment rooms for assessments and procedures. It provides safe care designed around the needs of patients, providing them with a better experience and preventing unnecessary hospital admissions.
Sensitive environments Switch plates, such as light switches, dimmers and sockets have one of the highest touch rates in any environment, so are likely to hold a significant number of microbes on their surfaces. Regular cleaning is essential but not always sufficient. By using products that inhibit bacterial and fungal organisms, it is possible to help prevent the spread of superbugs. Scolmore’s white moulded and Mode Part M wiring accessories are manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde,
which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. All products independently tested achieved a 99.99% kill off rate across all four types of the strains of bacteria – MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella Pneumonia. Right tools for the job Responsible for specifying the Mode and GridPro products for the hospital unit was Mark Sellens, Electrical Project Manager at electrical contracting firm, Booker & Best. A time-served electrician, with more than 30 years’ experience within the electrical installation industry, Mark comments: “The Mode range really was an obvious choice on a number of levels that were important for this particular project. It is a great quality range and represents very good value, which is essential in helping to meet budget commitments and

it comes with a 20 year guarantee which is pretty unique in the industry. It also scored highly from an infection control point of view, with its antimicrobial properties. Plus its smooth profile means there is a reduced risk of germs being harboured. “The electricians on site were very impressed with the GridPro range used for the lighting controls. They found the yokeless design of the GridPro plates particularly great to work with. Unique to GridPro is the screw attachment feature, which means that no yoke is required for any modules when using 1-4 gang plates – the modules can be simply screwed directly on to the plates. With some products on the market requiring yokes to be purchased as separate components, this will have implications when considering overall costs and labour requirements. So that was another particularly important consideration for this project.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

S
andhills Nursery in the West Midlands is one of the UK’s largest children’s nurseries and was built as a brand new, bespoke facility in a state-of-the-art building in Lower Penn, Wolverhampton, to cater for up to 200 local children. With a blank canvas to work with, one of the main priorities for the nursery was to get the security provision right, and products from ESP’s fire protection and security ranges were specified for installation by local electrical contracting firm Walkers Electrics. Access issues With a large, two storey building to work with, there was a need for a broad range of security solutions. Providing a secure means of entry to the premises was vital and ESP’s Aperta EZTAG3PRO door entry system was chosen due to the ease of installation and operation. It ensures that access to the premises is controlled so that only authorised personnel can enter.
I was able to get some “great help from the technical guys at ESP to help with the addressable fire system. They are a great team to work with.
”
Project Focus: The new Sandhills nursery offers a welcoming ‘home from home’ environment and allows the children to use their own natural curiosity and energy to help guide their own development. Among the nursery facilities are Playdough stations, natural open-ended resources, children’s cooking facilities and a reflections room. A library has also been incorporated to help enhance children’s vocabulary, to help them understand how to read and write, but also to allow development of understanding of different topics about the wider world and everyday life.
Fire safety From ESP’s MAGfire Fire Protection range, the Magpro16 addressable 16-zone fire panel was chosen to provide a high quality, durable fire alarm system to protect the whole of the nursery premises. 3W LED emergency downlights and 2W LED exit signs from the Duceri range are providing the required emergency exit signs and lighting provision.
