QUICK SMART

In last month’s column, if you remember, I was decrying the lack of anything resembling a decent summer this year. Then, lo and behold, the hottest day of the year arrived in September, (so officially the Autumn), and rather than worrying about putting the heating back on I was suddenly regretting not having my car’s air conditioning regassed sooner! Anyway, here we are in October and I can’t really believe how quickly this year is going by, with December and the C-word looming on the horizon. Before all that there is still plenty of news, products and viewpoints to share with wholesalers looking to boost their sales.

The word ‘smart’ seems to have taken on a whole new meaning over the last decade or two. Where once you might have described a smart pair of shoes or a haircut, anything with the word ‘smart’ attached to it now brings with it the modern day assumption that it can do pretty much anything. We’ve got smart watches, smart phones, smart motorways, smart buildings, the list goes on and it’s sometimes difficult to keep up. One thing’s for sure though, the range and ability of ‘smart’ technology is only going to increase and being in the know about the various products and the benefits they bring to end users is vitally important for both installers and wholesalers. ‘Ease of use’ is something that manufacturers are keen to boast about when promoting new products and for many customers this ease equates to whether they can do something with next to no effort, most often through their aforementioned smart phone.

One of the aims of much of the smart technology on the market today is the positive environmental impact, with energy efficiency a key feature and often a requirement for any new building project. Much like renewable technology, which we also covered in our May issue, the smart technology market is only going to increase and installers are already looking to upskill to ensure they are familiar and most importantly qualified to work with the new products. Earlier in the year PEW attended CEF Live where we were invited to listen to a talk with some of the wholesaler’s directors about the movements and trends they are seeing in the market and how they as a company are responding to the changing needs of the industry and its customers. In our Soapbox column this month Mike Gadd, Renewables Divisions Director at CEF, explains how the company is helping customers and colleagues stay up to speed and also benefit from the ever-growing renewables sector. We hope this can be the start of some healthy conversation between wholesalers and their approach to developing markets. If you would like to have your say please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

Labour shortage remains key industry concern

ENGINEERING SERVICES INDUSTRY GRAPPLESWITH RISING DEMAND AND SKILLSSHORTAGE

The latest engineering services industry survey, backed by leading trade bodies ECA, BESA, SELECT and SNIPEF, has revealed that electrotechnical businesses are growing more concerned about labour shortages amid the continuing economic squeeze. While reported turnover figures indicate year on year growth, lump sum pricing, wage expectations and general inflation are negatively impacting growth.

Almost half (44%) of all survey respondents said labour shortages were their current number one biggest concern for their businesses – up from 42% in Q1 2023 and a third (32%) in Q4 2022. Materials shortages and fixed pricing in light of inflation were ranked second and third-biggest concerns for business-owners, respectively.

A growing number of electrotechnical businesses have vacancies in their organisations – 57% in the latest survey compared to just over half (54%) in the previous survey, taken in April 2023. Of

those with vacancies, over half (54%) said they struggled with an insufficient supply of applicants to fill them.

Half (50%) said applicants lack sufficient knowledge to do the job, and half (49%) said applicants’ pay

expectations were too high. Despite these findings, a significant number of contractors are expanding their directly employed workforce rather than choosing agency labour to plug the skills gap.

Rob Driscoll, ECA Director of Legal and Business, said: “Turnover doesn’t typically reduce when inflation is high. The real test is maintaining future order books and margins. As the vast majority of survey respondents are SMEs, I am heartened to see how switched-on our Members are despite a tough business environment. ECA remains ready to help its Members mitigate the risks of an uncertain economy. The lack of enough skilled workers jeopardises our sector’s recovery. It leaves the industry vulnerable in an uncertain market.”

Payment times have not improved for most respondents and remain unsatisfactory. Almost two thirds of respondents (57%) said commercial clients/main contractors take 31-60 days to pay for work. A quarter (23%) said they can take up to 90 days.

SCHNEIDERELECTRICPARTNERSWITH MK:U

Schneider Electric has announced a partnership with MK:U, part of Cranfield University.

The two organisations will work closely together to shape the university courses of the future, ensuring that learning is applied to the real world to prepare students to meet the current and future needs of the business world.

Schneider Electric is investing with MK:U to train its degree apprentices in the coming years. Courses will include digital technology and solutions, cybersecurity, and a range of digital engineering options.

As the future campus of MK:U is developed, Schneider Electric will

participate in the open tender process to provide expert advice on the smart technology required to create a sustainable-by-design campus from the ground up.

Chris Collins, Country President and VP of Major Pursuits, Schneider Electric, said: “Students, businesses, and the local community will all benefit from our partnership and the close collaboration that this will bring. Together, we can develop skills that are fit for future business, inspire a new generation, and help to promote DE&I talent to enter the STEM workforce though leading research and technology innovation projects. Working with MK:U we will

collaborate to innovate and promote sustainability to tackle the challenges of effective energy management that are critical to meeting net zero targets.”

Professor Lynette Ryals OBE, Chief Executive of MK:U, said: “Close partnerships with an organisation that has shared values and commitments to sustainability, inclusivity, and representation in the industry is extremely important to us. MK:U is ‘built with business, for business’ and this partnership truly embodies this. This collaboration will help us shape education courses that will address the current and real challenges in the UK and ensure learning is aligned to business needs.”

CEMBRE ANNOUNCED ASLATEST EDATA DATAPOOL SPONSOR

Cembre has become the latest manufacturer to make a formal commitment to sponsor EDATA, the electrotechnical sector’s data pool, for the next three years. Their commitment brings the total number of sponsors to 24, comprising a mix of manufacturers and wholesalers of various sizes. The sponsors’ pledges means that the EDATA Data Pool can enter the next phase of its development: making high quality product data available at no cost to EDA wholesalers and their branches and continuing to develop the platform based on the input of the members.

EDATA is growing steadily with 70 leading brands signed up to share their high quality product data with electrical wholesalers. Every EDA wholesaler has free access to the data pool where they can download data in bulk to drive

websites, e-shops, ordering and invoicing, and ERP systems, and create individual data sheets on the fly.

Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, said: “Sponsorship is more than a financial commitment - each partner business is taking responsibility for playing their part in driving the future of this sector’s key data and digitalisation initiative.

“Each sponsor will have a place on the EDATA Steering Group: this Group has responsibility for the strategic direction and development of the data pool. They elect the members of the EDA Data Services Board every two years and will also have an opportunity to stand themselves when places become available. A small number of opportunities still exist to get involved in the EDATA sponsorship programme.

CHARITY UPDATE
Earlier this year, six people from the electrical industry signed up to take on one of the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) challenges for a cause, the Pyrenees Freedom Trail trek.

In this month’s Face to Face we speak to David Williams, VP Transactional Business at Schneider Electric UK & Ireland, to get his thoughts on data use and commercial trends.

FACE TO FACE SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC

QWhat is your background in the electrical sector and what are your key aims and objectives as the newly appointed VP for Transactional Business at Schneider Electric?

A. I have been at Schneider Electric for 11 years now. During this time, I have overseen the complete the activity across all our business units ranging between green energy solutions in buildings, the residential sector and overall power systems.

As the new VP in transactional business, I am looking to re-shape the priorities of the business, placing Electricity4.0 and our B2B partners at the heart of operations, the likes of which include electricians, panel builders, contractors, electrical distributors, and other key industry professionals.

With the current business climate being so volatile because of global conflicts, economic pressures, and environmental instability, I want to take Schneider Electric back to the basics; and reassess where the company fits into this new energy landscape to best support our customer network.

QHow can wholesalers make use of their data in order to better understand the needs of their customers?

A. Companies have had to adjust to challenging economic circumstances that have transformed the global business landscape. There has been a sizeable fall in consumer confidence, resulting in 80% of customers now admitting to switching

providers on account of poor service/experience. So, with the customer sentiment being so volatile, experience and brand reputation is imperative to business survival.

This shift places great onus on businesses to provide high standards of service or risk their customer base, and the answer lies in data.

Wholesalers must utilise operational data on inventories, stock levels, customer demand, profits, and costs. This equips them with accurate intelligence so that they can provide tailored service to their customers.

Data can help a company pinpoint the biggest operational deficiencies, laying the groundwork for where they can make the biggest impact. However, data alone cannot be transformational for businesses and instead utilised alongside realistic CX goals.

QWhat is ‘omnichannel’ e-commerce and how can it be used to drive sales?

A. For top B2C businesses, omnichannel has become the dominant form of commerce. Customers are increasingly demanding seamless experiences across online and in-store shopping. Many brands now allow their customers to shop instore, on their website, on their app, via social media marketplaces, and more. Not only does omnichannel drive loyalty by giving customers the freedom to shop in the ways they prefer, but it also helps the business to reach new customer segments—boosting sales, efficiency, and inventory turnover.

As a result, omnichannel is increasingly seeping into the B2B world. Corporate customers now use ten or more channels to interact with suppliers, up from just five in 2016, while 94% of B2B decisionmakers agree that new omnichannel sales strategies are equally or even more effective than pre-pandemic models. Even established B2B brands like Schneider Electric are developing online marketplaces for distributors, with the company’s customer-facing web shop launching in Egypt, France, India, and Indonesia.

B2B suppliers cannot solve the needs of an entire segment of customers through one channel, nor can they ignore e-commerce. The option to engage via face-to-face, remote, and self-service should be available to all customers, from small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) up to the largest organisations. After all, B2B purchases are still ultimately made by people, and they must be treated as individuals throughout every stage of the process.

QWiring accessories are now available in a myriad of different styles and finishes – what advice would you give to wholesalers when deciding on the product ranges to stock?

14 OCTOBER2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER FACE TO FACE

A. The market has expanded recently, offering a wider range of finishes. It's important to know the core finishes required and consult with manufacturers for guidance on popular choices.

Manufacturers should utilise point-ofsale (POS) materials to showcase products, combining physical samples with online libraries for lifestyle and application images.

When it comes to decorative accessories, trends tend to favour cleaner lines like the Ultimate Screwless Flat Plate range from Schneider Electric. However, raised edge designs may also be preferred for interior design or practical reasons.

Some finishes are more customised, so having samples or points-of-sale with various finishes at the trade counter is beneficial. Stocking core lines and a few unique finishes should suffice. Wholesalers should consider flexible ranges that don't

increase costs or require excessive storage space. For example, Schneider Electric's Lisse and Ultimate grid ranges offer modularity by using a base switch module with interchangeable rocker caps.

Wholesalers should understand that carrying every variation is not feasible but having a few core lines and on-trend collections still provides the essential choices for buyers.

QWhat industry patterns and trends are you expecting to see develop further over the next 12 months?

A. The trends that we’re seeing dominating across the industry, again a byproduct of the global economic headwinds, is greater consciousness on energy management and saving across the residential industry.

Specifically, we’re seeing it become the responsibility of electricians, property owners and developers, and other key trade professionals to retrofit and futureproof the residential sector, especially in the face of an energy crisis. It is therefore the responsibility of Schneider Electric to ensure that the key industry players have sufficient tools and the necessary training to be able to accommodate this seismic shift.

Already, we’re providing key education and training on our product offerings, granting them the tools to do more with less. We also work to connect trade professionals across the UK, effectively building a support network for all our partners.

MOVERS & SHAKERS

Embracing feedback from the contractors installing our products is what drives product development across the Scolmore Group of companies. We are constantly looking at ways to innovate the professional electrical contracting sector and our wiring accessories ranges have continued to benefit from significant investment and development over the years. It doesn’t have to be revolutionary, but attention to detail is always at the forefront of the design process and a number of new features or benefits have been introduced to further enhance and improve some of our most popular wiring accessory ranges.

Back to Matt Black for Deco and Deco Plus

The demand for matt black wiring accessories has been on the rise in recent years, as installers working on domestic

Scolmore Group, provides an update on the company’s wiring accessories range.

and specification projects look for an alternative premium finish for interiors. We have taken this feedback on board and have extended the popular matt black finish to our Deco and Deco Plus wiring accessories collections to meet this growing trend.

The new matt black finishes are available across all products in the extensive Deco and Deco Plus ranges – to help add the perfect contemporary look to any interior space. Deco Plus is a comprehensive range of premium decorative metal wiring accessories that was first launched in 2017 to build on the huge success of the classic Deco range. Deco Plus introduced smooth, contemporary curves that have wideranging appeal with contractors, specifiers and end users alike.

Deco and Deco Plus switch plates are all modular as standard allowing the creation of virtually any switch plate design required. With a wide range of MiniGrid and New Media products also available in the range, this gives installers total flexibility to customise bespoke designs and solutions quickly and easily on site.

The addition of the new matt black finishes brings the number of finishes in the Deco Plus range to eight – polished chrome, satin chrome, polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, stainless steel, black nickel and matt black. The Deco range is also offered in pearl nickel and Georgian to bring the total number of finishes available to 10.

Definity Complete – all in one solution

Having listened to comments from some of our customers, we have taken our popular Definity screwless wiring accessories range and simplified the ordering process.

SPECIAL REPORT 20 OCTOBER2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Up until now, the Definity screwless wiring accessories range has been supplied as two separate elements –insert and cover plate –with each requiring its own separate product code. In a move to simplify the ordering process – particularly with online ordering in mind – Definity inserts and cover plates will now be supplied and packaged together as one unit with one product code.

Definity has evolved from Scolmore’s well-established Define flat plate accessory range and features all of the same attributes including modular switching but without the visible fixing screws. Definity goes one stage further by incorporating screwless, push-fit face plates in a range of

finishes. Because the face plates are supplied independently of the electrical inserts it means that the initial installation of the product can be carried out and any subsequent maintenance or decoration completed before the final fixing of the face plate.

The inserts are available in black, white and grey and there are now eight cover plate finishes to choose from – brushed steel, stainless steel, polished chrome, white, red, black, metal white and metal matt black.

Grey is the new black

It is now three years since we first introduced grey inserts to some of our wiring accessories ranges on the back of a growing trend among end users and consumers for stylish finishing touches for their interior décors. From a recent poll of

some of our customers, it seems this trend is showing no signs of abating. Whilst decorative finishes such as satin chrome continue to be the number one choice for many, demand for grey inserts and matt black finishes continues to gather momentum.

Today we offer grey inserts across three of our most popular wiring accessories ranges – Deco decorative metal, Deco Plus premium decorative metal and the Definity screwless range. The grey inserts are offered in addition to black and white, with Deco and Deco Plus products in the stainless steel and satin chrome finishes and Definity products in the brushed steel and stainless steel finishes.

SPECIAL REPORT

DRIVERS LICENSE

The benefits of LED lighting are widely accepted. What many people don’t realise, however, is the vital role LED drivers play. Russell Parr, CEO at PowerLed, highlights the importance of quality drivers, and how to ensure you choose the right product and supplier.

Adriver is a crucial component that converts, regulates, and supplies the appropriate electrical power to LEDs, and which significantly influences the performance, reliability, and lifetime of LED lighting. However, as there is a range of technical and quality-relevant properties and features to consider, drivers are not one-size-fits-all.

Because LEDs must operate failure-free in a variety of conditions, the drivers that power them should be durable, reliable, stable, and efficient. As such, there are several factors to consider when selecting drivers to ensure optimal performance. These include voltage and current ratings, power capacity, dimming capability, compatibility, efficiency, and reliability.

In fact, higher-grade components should not be ‘non-negotiable’, as the quality of the components used to manufacture drivers has an immense impact on power factor – the ratio of real power used compared to apparent power into the circuit or more simply put, how efficiently the electrical power is consumed. A low power factor indicates an inefficient product as it draws more current into the circuit than is utilised by the load.

Ultimately, LED drivers built with

premium components will help to achieve the optimal performance, safety, longevity, and sustainability of a LED lighting system.

Solution and supplier selection

The range of available LED drivers can make it challenging to choose the right solution – and the right supplier. This is further complicated by the fact that not all manufacturers provide the same quality or depth of technical information on their products, leaving electrical contractors unable to make accurate comparisons.

To best assist their customers, electrical wholesalers should look for best-in-class solutions from accredited suppliers with a reputation for honesty and excellence. They should also look for suppliers who comply with the Energy-related Products (ErP) directive, which is intended to encourage manufacturers and importers to provide products that are more energy and resource efficient.

PowerLed has been trading for nearly three decades, offers an extensive range of intelligent commercial LED lighting options and prides itself on the manufacture of dependable ‘fit and forget’ products.

TRAIN TO GAIN

This year Aico has been working with JTL Training in Ashford, Kent to provide their students with Aico’s free, award-winning Expert Installer Training.

JTL is one of the largest work-based learning providers in England and Wales working with over 3,800 businesses from large corporations to small local suppliers. JTL is currently working with over 8,000 learners and trains more apprentices than anyone else in the building services and engineering sector.

Aico’s FIA CPD accredited Expert Installer Training is designed to ensure electrical contractors have all the information they need to install domestic fire and carbon monoxide alarm systems. Guaranteeing effective fire safety protection for customers relies on alarm systems being installed correctly. It is important that young people who are entering the work environment are given the correct information when it comes to installing life safety devices.

The students at JTL were also provided with information and a demonstration of the HomeLINK Connected Home Solution. The system can extract and collate data directly from alarm heads and environmental sensors and be made available from a user-friendly dashboard. These actionable insights enable preventative measures and proactive maintenance of landlords’ housing portfolios.

Once students have completed Expert Installer training, they are invited to join the Aico Installer Community – a connected online platform built to support Expert

Installers. Members of the community are eligible to participate in Aico’s free-ofcharge City & Guilds Assured TrainingDomestic Fire &CO Alarm Systems.

Aico’s Regional Specification Manager (RSM), Paul Barrett, who provided the training, added: “Educating future generations is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. It has been great to work with Russell Griffiths and Dave Cunningham educating their students on the importance of installing Domestic Fire and CO alarms to British Standards BS 5839-P6 and BS 50292. It is now becoming an annual event and I hope we can roll the training out to all their colleges.”

JTL’s Senior Electrical Tutor, Russell Griffiths, commented: “I have been teaching electrical installations for 17 years and it has always baffled me that fire alarms do not form more of a part of the qualification than they do. So, with this in mind, I made an approach to Paul Barrett of Aico to see if the company could provide CPD to our learners here at JTL Ashford.

“On meeting with Paul, I could tell that Aico were going to be very proactive partners in the assistance they were to

give us, and it was fantastic to hear about the Expert Installer training that they could provide for our learners. We arranged a date for Paul to come in and deliver the training and I have to say it was of great benefit to our learners. Students were actively engaged from start to finish and all were provided with a certificate of completion, that they could add to their CPD files and off-the-job training logs.

“All learners found the session very useful and were happy with gaining a better understanding of domestic smoke alarm systems and the different types of protection offered with Aico products. Paul was very professional and able to deliver a good session to our learners with his expert knowledge.

“Moving forward, Paul has arranged for a bespoke display board to be made for our workshop enabling the learners to have access to not only demonstrate products but also can be made live to enable learners to test functionality. I hope that we can have a Paul back every year to deliver to our learners because the service that Aico and Paul provide is a valuable addition to our curriculum here and I believe that it should be used widely throughout our organisation.”

Supporting education is a big focus for Aico and they have a dedicated team of 29 RSMs, delivering fully accredited CPD courses across the UK.

SUSTAINED EFFORT

With changes inevitable industry-wide with regards to the increase in sustainability expectations being introduced, it’s important to understand what this actually means for business. Hager UK speaks to PEW about its action on sustainability in the electrical sphere.

One of the most important factors for businesses across the world is sustainability, with greater pressure for us all to commit to ensure an environmentallysecure future. Hager UK has a genuine passion for positive change and is committed to playing a part in making the planet cleaner and more enjoyable: now and for future generations. Hager recognises that manufacturing long-lasting and robust items is a key ingredient of a low-carbon business. The company prides itself on stringent product testing, resulting in solutions which are built to the highest standards.

Commitment

The motivation behind this company-wide approach towards sustainability is focused on three core streams: ethics, employees and environment. As part of this, Hager has launched its Blue Planet Commitment (BPC), aimed at enhancing collaborative business activities for a better and cleaner future, while supporting employees with their own environmental efforts.

By 2035, the UK Government is aiming for a 78 per cent reduction in economywide greenhouse-gas emissions, meaning changes are inevitable to the way the electrical sector and its entire supply chain operates. While this ever-evolving legislation must be complied with, Hager is motivated to make a difference for its business, for its customers and for the team.

As a family-run and owned company with strong values, Hager is committed to its sustainable approach. The organisation has invested heavily in its staff to enhance their skills development and training, implement environmental advancements companywide and consider long-term impact.

Environmental impact

Across the industry, many businesses are making changes, such as developing innovative products and increasing the use of renewable sources. Hager’s entire process is often under intense internal investigation to analyse what the environmental impact is, how it can be avoided or minimised, or what alternatives can be offered. Company-wide, the organisation supports the Paris Climate Agreement which outlines a contribution limit of 1.5°C to global warming. To achieve this, Hager has established a detailed action plan: the Blue Planet Commitment, to contribute to fighting climate change, minimising impact on the environment and protecting the planet.

Sourcing, producing, using and disposing of products creates a complex life cycle that results in emissions and waste. Aware of these risks and the detrimental impact it has on both society and the environment, Hager has committed to reducing or offsetting this where possible by investing in the longevity and quality of products, while also providing more sustainable solutions.

To date, the business has implemented a number of strategies to enhance commercial sustainability efforts, including sourcing materials with conscious consideration for its environmental impact and getting products certified to industryrecognised standards (and beyond) with sustainability accreditations.

Globally, all Hager sites work to improve the efficiency of energy usage – from revitalising outdated systems to transitioning to renewable energy sources and improving manufacturing processes. Emerging into new markets, such as EV, ensures Hager can continue to support

customers to improve their own processes and service offerings, while also making efforts towards reducing their CO2 footprint.

Planning for the future

The UK headquarters is also making significant developments with regard to sustainability in how the business is run. The introduction of exclusively LED lighting, as well as sensors, has provided an energy saving of 97%, and the installation of a 100kWh solar array is the first step in using renewable energy at the site. With a fleet of hybrid and electric vehicles, a number of EV chargers have been installed to facilitate this transition and future-proof the site in anticipation of further advancements being made.

The manufacturing process in the UK has also been enhanced, replacing powder coating materials that use temperatures around 220°C to cure paint with alternatives that require 180°C temperatures. Plus, insulating the ovens has also proved valuable in reducing waste heat.

Fully aware that sustainability is a longterm commitment, Hager’s future plans include further improvements to water usage (both fresh and waste), as well as additional renewable energy solutions.

SPECIAL REPORT 26 OCTOBER2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

In the past few years, a growing number of buildings, public spaces and even modes of transport have been switching up their electrical outlet offerings to include USB charging outlets. Amy Burley, Global Offering Manager at MK Electric, explains how USB Type-C (USB-C) is the next step in this evolution of convenience.

ACCORDING TO TYPE

The rising popularity of USB outlets alongside conventional switch sockets is one born of convenience. It enables occupants, passers-by or passengers to charge their devices on the go, regardless of the make or model of their device, and without needing to carry around a bulky plug charger.

Industry shift

Although there is limited data on how many building across the UK have USB outlets fitted on their premises, there is some data on how public transport is following the trend. In 2021, a Freedom of Information request put to Transport for London established that there were more than 520 buses operating in the London area with USB charging facilities.

It’s easy to understand why — passengers with potentially short journeys can quickly plug in their devices to recharge their devices, helping enhance the passenger experience.

However, the flexibility of catering to most devices, from mobile phones to tablets and e-readers, has always come at the expense of performance. USB

integrated outlets as we typically see them today are USB Type-A (USB-A) sockets. These require adapters or converter cables to connect and charge devices that use other USB formats, such as Micro-USB or USB-C. This means the rate of charge for devices is slower.

Yet this may be about to change. A March 2023 report from Future Market Insights projected that global sales of USB-C devices would pass 2351.9 million units by the end of the year. This growth is spurred on by new legislation in Europe. In 2022, the European Union (EU) legislated a new agreement that would make USB-C the standard charging port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras across the trading bloc.

Device manufacturers have until December 2024 to ensure their product designs for the region comply. Device redesigns are costly, so this shift will likely affect product designs worldwide rather than only impacting those specifically sold in the region. We can already see this with Apple’s iPhone 15 — revealed in September 2023, it is the first to feature a USB-C charging port after more than a decade of using Apple’s Lightning connection.

to USB-C outlets to enhance the experience of occupants and customers.

The USB-C opportunity

MK Electric has been providing switch sockets with USB-C integrated outlets for some time now, having incorporated the USB-C technology into the Logic Plus range of wiring devices.

Each socket includes MK's Dynamic Device Recognition (DDR) technology, which ensures that each device is charged in its own optimum way. DDR works because different proprietary devices charge differently. With DDR, devices recognise the MK USB socket or USB module as it would its own charger, drawing current in the way that best suits its design.

Recently, this range has been further expanded to include a version with a 30W output capacity, allowing it to support even more efficient charging of connected

devices. The new fast-charging USB ports feature GaN technology and USB power delivery (PD) protocol to safely provide rapid charging to a wide range of electronic devices. Dedicated USB Type A+C ports deliver a high rate of power to connected devices, with an output up to 27W on the USB-A port or 30W on the USB-C port, capable of charging mobile phones to 50% charge within 30 minutes.

With rapid charging, it’s important that the output doesn’t risk overcharging the device or causing damage to the device’s battery. Using PD, the charger communicates with connected electronic devices to negotiate charging current/voltage parameters, to optimise charging speed and protect the battery lifetime.

Unlike other products that are available on the market offering 30W USB-C capacity, each socket includes double pole switching and a 3-pin ‘child-resistant’ shutter system to ensure user safety. MK’s 30W Logic Plus USB-C product is the only

one that features double-pole switching, which makes it a preferable choice for commercial installations — one that brings a greater level of safety for the end user.

Planning ahead

Now is the ideal time for electricians and contractors to begin familiarising themselves with the most effective USB-C integrated switch socket products to keep ahead of demand. As device manufacturers are in the midst of making the shift to USBC, there is still time before many building owners and managers begin enquiring about outlets to support the new standard.

For contractors, meeting this demand will be as much about choosing a solution that can be easily retrofitted as it will be about an effective solution. As part of MK Electric’s Logic Plus range of switch sockets, the USBC integrated sockets occupy a standard 25mm backbox that makes them perfect for retrofits and new builds alike. The sockets also include In-line terminals that allow wires to be cut and stripped to the same length, speeding up the installation time.

If the market projections are accurate for how many USB-C devices will be in use by 2024, we may be on the verge of seeing USB-C outlets become a common sight in commercial properties and public spaces. That can only happen if contractors are equipped with the right products to deliver on the demand in a safe, reliable and effective way.

CONNECT FOUR

Michael Crowther, Product Development Director at Hylec-APL, explains more about why four way junction boxes can help you ensure safe, reliable and compliant electrical installations.

Electrical installers, whether working within domestic or commercial settings, are having to deal with increasing numbers of electrical and electronic devices or fixtures – from LED up and downlighting to all kinds of smart home and building automation functionality. This often increases the time, complexity and cost of installations, as well as the risk of quality and compliance issues.

One of the essentials Junction boxes are an essential piece of kit for electrical installers, functioning as intersections of wiring between fittings or devices and the mains power supply, helping protect and isolate electrical connections. By providing mechanical strength, enclosure and durable electrical

continuity, they help wiring installations comply with regulations. However, not all junction boxes are created equal – and installers must take care they are used in a way that ensures consistently safe, reliable and compliant electrical installations.

Hylec-APL’s in-line junction box series, Debox, which includes four and five pole models up to 32 Amps, plus the new IP66/67-rated Debox 11 for exterior projects, has been designed to make installers’ lives easier and save installation time by including everything they need –from integrated terminal blocks with rapid connections and cable clamps to tool-less closure and maintenance-free operation.

So, what should electrical installers and contractors look out for when purchasing junction boxes?

1IS THE JUNCTION BOX SUPPLIED WITH A UL/VDE-APPROVED TERMINAL

BLOCK?

Not all junction boxes come supplied with a terminal block. In fact, contractors often make up kits – sets of boxes, screws, cable ties and terminal blocks – for installers. But there’s always a risk that the installer ends up short of a kit component – and then simply resorts to using whatever connector they have to hand in their toolbox, which then may not be fully compliant. With Debox, integrated UL/VDE-compliant terminal blocks are included.

HAVE THE CABLE CLAMPS BEEN SCREWED TIGHTLY ENOUGH?

Across multiple installations, can you be certain that every cable clamp has been secured sufficiently to anchor the cables? To eliminate this concern, Debox SL features quick and easy-to-use push-fit cable clamps, compliant with the EN60670-22 Pull Test.

HAS THE LID BEEN SECURED CORRECTLY?

Junction boxes help conceal and protect electrical connections, as well as protecting users from potentially hazardous wiring. It is therefore vital to ensure that the lid of the junction box is safely secured. If not, the box and its wiring might be accessible, even without tools. Some junction boxes require a cable tie to secure the lid, but this relies on the

installer having these to hand – and using them consistently. Debox features an integrated locking clip, for tool-less closure – as well as a spare clip, in case you need to re-visit the connection.

HAVE ANY OF THE SCREWS BEEN MISPLACED DURING INSTALLATION?

At the top of a ladder or in poorly lit locations, fiddly parts such as screws can easily be dropped and lost. If they are, will the installer have an exact replacement screw – or will they substitute something else from their toolbox, or even simply skip

that one? Debox features an all-integrated design, with no loose components, such as screws or cable ties, that can be accidentally dropped or lost.

So, for busy electrical installers, looking to quickly and methodically wire up multiple devices or fittings on-site, Debox’s integrated design simplifies and guides them through the process, saving time and money – and crucially, ensuring consistently safe, reliable and compliant installations.

In all residential solar PV systems, there are two main components: the panel array and the inverter. The solar panels are made up of a number of photovoltaic cells that absorb sunlight as DC current while the solar inverter converts that into a form of electricity that can be used in the premises – AC current.

But, along with panels and inverters, there’s also the smart energy management system (SEMS) – an important tool that can help users make the most out of their systems and better understand the benefits of solar energy.

What is a smart energy management system (SEMS)?

SEMS are relatively new and many solar customers aren’t yet fully benefitting from them. As the industry matures and more companies offer energy management systems, it will be important for installers to be able to offer guidance on how to use them so homeowners can make the most of their investment. In basic terms, SEMS is the control system installed within a solar setup. Most SEMS are now available as a phone or tablet App,

Photovoltaic (PV) power is undergoing a major upswing in popularity, but without proficiency with a smart energy management system (SEMS), installers and homeowners could miss out on some of the benefits of solar. Eugene Lucarelli, Marketing Manager at GoodWe UK, takes a closer look.

making it possible to monitor, regulate and manage the power generated ‘on the go’. These energy management systems allow homeowners to track the performance of their systems and make adjustments to maximise available energy.

In practice, this might mean using power-hungry devices like dishwashers and tumble-dryers in the middle of the day when sunlight is in abundance, rather than early-morning or overnight hours which is often recommended for appliances reliant on the grid. Along with efficient practices, SEMS provide notifications about errors and warnings, making them critical to ensuring PV equipment is performing at itspeak at all times.

Accurate forecasting

Without an energy management system, it can be difficult to track how much energy is generated and consumed which can lead to missed opportunities for maximising the energy and economic efficiency of solar equipment. It can also make planning for installations of additional solar arrays difficult as less data is available for accurate projections.

On the other hand, an effective energy management system provides an intuitive user interface, simplifying the key information users need to know about their solar setup.

By displaying real-time production and consumption figures on an easy-to-read display, SEMS makes it easy to monitor

SMART TECHNOLOGY
34 OCTOBER2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

energy usage and identify any problems as they arise. It also means that a system’s performance can be tracked over time to identify energy harvesting and expenditure patterns and capitalise on opportunities to improve efficiency.

Additional advantages

While day-to-day use of an energy management system offers advantages to solar users, there are other common situations that a system like this can help to improve.

Many people still don’t realise that solar panels can generate electricity on cloudy days. In these cases, SEMS can help homeowners understand the benefits of solar energy by showing them how much electricity their panels are harvesting, even when the weather is overcast.

Some electronic devices use significant energy when they’re not being used, especially if they’re faulty. Fortunately, an energy management system can help solve this problem by allowing users to view the amount of electricity being consumed in real time.

While some solar systems allow for people to be entirely ‘off-grid’, most residential installations still use a small amount of grid-provided power to ensure a household’s energy requirements are met, meaning they won’t lose power if they use more energy than they generate. With the high cost of electricity being a pressing concern for many, SEMS allow users to spot anomalies. If there is unusual power consumption – due to wiring that needs maintenance, for example – the user can identify the issue and have it resolved before needing to rely on the grid for their electricity.

For installers, SEMS offers the ability for them to monitor all the installations under their account, meaning they can remotely check for any issues and even remotely diagnose problems without having to visit the site. This can save a significant amount of time for installers and improve overall client satisfaction.

LET’S TWIST AGAIN

With data cabling a service now offered by many electrical contractors, the team at NICEIC provide guidance on the installation of twisted pair network cables.

Many commercial and industrial installations employ networking cables for their main infrastructure of Ethernet networks, enabling a permanent and reliable link for communication between items of equipment such as work station computers, printers and network servers. However, some devices, such as those used to control office lighting, work on a connected bus system operated through a software interface including, typically, multi-pair cables having a screened data pair and unscreened power pair.

Within the home, smart devices such as entertainment equipment, lighting and heating control systems often require a network connection. This connection, typically based on a local area network (LAN), allows such devices to:

● Access Internet-based data sources and services; to retrieve the latest information such as the weather conditions for enhance energy efficiency.

● Give the user greater control and monitoring of connected devices while away from the home, to further improve energy performance and/or provide increased security property monitoring.

In larger premises, the use of access points (AP) for expansion of the wireless network may be an option, although these devices typically require a separate network cable, such as a twisted pair cable, which allows for data and power to be transmitted within the same cable. This is often referred to as Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Although many devices can connect wirelessly to a network, such connections are generally limited in range, susceptible to security breaches and can suffer from interference due to external influences, leading to poor signal quality or loss of signal and consequently, failure of equipment.

Where 0dB is the maximum power available and3dB is the cut-off points where the power of the data signal has been reduced by 50% and the output voltage has been reduced by 0.707.

Voltage U = 20log10 ( 1 √2 )≈–3 dB

Power P = 10log10 ( 1 2 ) ≈–3 dB

These are referred to as cut-off frequencies and the bandwidth of a signal is the frequency between these two cut-off points.

For this reason, the installation of dedicated data network cables may be a favourable option. In addition to improving the reliability of connected devices, having a direct link to the LAN also permits larger amounts of data to be transferred at increased speed whilst reducing the latency1 between input and output devices.

Twisted pair data cable

Networking data cables are commonly made up of four twisted pairs of copper conductors, although other variants of cables are available (see Fig 2). The twisted pairs are typically used for carrying data signals, a digital pulse or the variations in voltage between (TX+and TX-) and (RX+ and RX-) conductors2. Typically,

not all the twisted pairs within the cable are used for the transmission of data.

The performance and ability of a cable to transmit large amounts of data for a particular application depends mostly upon the cable’s grade of construction. These grades are generally categorised (Category 5 – Category 8.2) and are used to identify the amount of data the cable can carry, a measure of high and low bandwidth, and the speed at which the data can be transmitted from its source to output device (transmission speed) (see Table 1).

Bandwidth

The bandwidth is the ability of a cable to carry a signal ranging across upper and lower bands of frequency over a period of time. For example, a Category 5 cable having a maximum bandwidth of 100MHz would be able to process a signal between point’s fL and fH on a frequency response curve, as shown by Fig 1.

Cable construction

The method of construction varies between the Categories and relates to the performance of the cable. For example, a screened Category 6A cable as shown in Fig 2, is capable of transferring greater amounts of data per second in comparison to that of an unscreened Category 5 cable. This is due to the improved construction, which includes:

● An outer sheath; this may vary between manufacturers but mostly consists of PVC, polyethylene or low smoke halogen (LSZH) insulation

● Interior separation used for mitigating the unwanted coupling of adjacent conductors and preventing induced noise (crosstalk) transference between each twisted pair of conductors

● Inner aluminium foil screen prevents external noise (alien crosstalk) from disrupting the transmitted signal

● Conductors, vary in cross-sectional area (csa) between categories. Typically for Category 6A the csa is 0.258mm2 solid copper, generally covered with high density polyethylene insulation, arranged in four twisted pairs

● The twisting arrangement of conductors varies in pitch between the pairs of conductors within the cable and is measured in twists per inch (TPI). This helps to reduce the internal crosstalk or electromagnetic interference between pairs of conductors, allowing for pure signal distribution with less error

The TPI is typically increased between the pairs of conductors in a Category 6A cable compared with that of a Category 5. Cables having stranded copper conductors provide greater flexibility and would typically be used for patch cables or for final connections to portable devices.

Cable termination

The connection of electronic equipment is referenced in the IEC 60603-7 series and relates to the interface of Category cables and the termination of conductors, as shown in Fig 2.

There are two standards for the connection of RJ-45 terminations, these include T-568A and T-568B (defined in the US standard ANSI/TIA/EIA-568.2-D), which relate to the order of terminations of conductors within that standard. It is critical to have correct and adequate terminations at both ends of the cable. Any poor termination will reduce signal strength, cause a loss or noise in the transmitted signal creating distortion and data error.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

The PoE applications use either two or four pairs to deliver power to terminal devices;

power can be transmitted over data conductors. Other applications may include the distribution of a DC power supply through a device such as an Ethernet switch, used to connect equipment such as lighting controllers, IP cameras and wireless access points over the same data network cable.

Requirements of BS 7671

The requirements of BS 7671 are applicable to the installation of network data cables within a building – refer to (110.1.2 indent (vi)).

Network cables are often distributed throughout the fabric of a building, usually from a central location, which makes it possible for them to be in contact with, or close proximity to, other cables having different operating voltages.

To minimise the risk of interference between cables of different voltage levels:

● Band I and Band II circuits shall not be contained in the same wiring system as circuits having a nominal voltage exceeding that of low voltage, and

● Band I and Band II circuits shall not be contained within the same wiring system, unless one or more of the conditions in indents (i) to (iv) of Regulation 528.1 are met.

Where network cables of Band I are installed in a duct or shared void underground, and/or cross with cables of Band II, segregation should be provided to achieve a minimum separation of 100 mm. Where this is not practical, mechanical protection shall be provided (528.2).

Similarly, network cables are often terminated within patch panels or media cabinets enabling peripheral equipment such as Ethernet switches, routers and

entertainment equipment to be contained within one location. However, mixed voltages are likely to be grouped within the same assembly in which segregation will be required (515.2).

It is important to recognise, that where necessary, adequate support must be provided for Band I networking cables to prevent their premature collapse in the event of a fire (521.10.202). This may be achieved in a number of ways including:

● Metallic clips inside or outside of plastic trunking

● Metallic saddles holding plastic conduits

● Metallic clips on wall-mounted cables

Cables installed in steel trunking/conduits and on top of cable tray/ladder rack are not considered to be an entanglement risk. Similarly, additional support is not required for cables installed in floors, above ceilings or behind plasterboard.

Summary

Where it is necessary to install network data cables for equipment within a building, installers need to be mindful of the suitability of a cable for a particular application; reference should always be made to manufacturer’s recommendations.

In addition, where such types of cable are likely to be installed in proximity to cables of mixed voltages, creating a potential for interference and signal error, segregation shall be provided.

The need to provide adequate support for Band I networking cables for the prevention of premature collapse in the event of a fire must also be considered. TO

KIDDE SAFETY EUROPE CO2 MONITOR

Kidde Safety Europe has launched a new carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor to help people to understand and improve indoor air quality in homes, workplaces, schools and hospitality venues. The mains powered non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) monitor complies with the Scottish Building Standards requirements for the mandatory CO2 monitors that must be installed in all homes. Warning users of rising CO2 levels or abnormal humidity or temperature level changes, the new Kidde CO2 Monitor, which has a 10-year lifespan, provides the current CO2 levels from 400 to 5000 parts per million (PPM), as well as a seven day history of CO2 readings. It also shows the current temperature and humidity on the large, easy to read LCD display, which has automatic brightness adjustment to minimise night-time disturbance.

The monitor has been designed to provide clear warnings and indications in several different forms. Detailed air quality information is displayed on the LCD screen. As many people will not be familiar with the acceptable parts per million (PPM) for CO2, the Kidde CO2 monitor provides a ‘traffic light’ LED notification to allow easy identification of the current CO2 levels, even from a distance. Green represents 400 to 999ppm – which signals good indoor air quality, Orange denotes readings of 1,000 to 1499ppm – indicating deteriorating indoor air conditions associated with poor air quality complaints, and red displays for readings above 1500ppm – the level associated with headaches, drowsiness and loss of concentration and where it is necessary to ventilate indoor space as a result. At this level, the monitor’s easily audible built-in alarm clearly alerts occupants to high CO2 levels.

To do this, we have collaborated with renowned training providers, including IET, GTEC, Universal Skills Group, NICIEC and NAPIT, to deliver comprehensive Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) training

courses. We also have over 40 training rooms that we have used, and continue to use, to upskill dozens of installers each month, ensuring high standards across the industry.

Renewables champions

Amongst our team of 18 renewables experts, we have the Technical and Training Lead, Tom Binns. Tom is an industry veteran with 11 years of experience in solar, battery and EV installations and leads our internal training programme. This programme is being rolled out to all 1,500 CEF branch colleagues and we are also appointing renewables champions in each branch.

Our Internal Sales and Technical Teams provide first-line support for all our renewables customers. Through partnerships with suppliers, we have created centralised document portals to enable our team to handle customers’ technical inquiries.

We have also partnered with industry-leading software provider OpenSolar to offer training to installers in using this design software to plan and execute projects more efficiently. We also work closely with our supply chain, such as K2 Mounting Systems, who have their own software for the proper calculation and planning of installations. We ensure our customers know the importance of utilising these tools for a safer, more efficient, and more compliant installation. We have sourced new warehousing and we have invested £20 million in stock so far to offer:

● The largest choice of EV chargers stocked and supplied by any distributor (over 25 brands)

● Central stock of five Tier 1 solar panel brands

● Four mounting system suppliers (in-roof and on-roof)

● Six battery storage and inverter manufacturers

Wind turbines, air source and ground source heat pumps, thermal storage, heating cylinders, and solar-powered storage heaters.

This centrally held stock can be delivered directly to an installer's job site within two days or to any CEF branch for collection or local delivery, enabling our customers to meet project deadlines efficiently and easily.

Over 81% of CEF branches now regularly supply solar, batteries and

inverters and 98% of branches stock a wider range of renewable products. We can also allocate and hold stock for up to six months to ensure supply for pre-orders. We also offer finance options for B2B National Accounts customers.

On the road

We’re also bringing our Renewables team on the road with the latest series of TechTalks. Our latest series launched in September 2023, and we will be visiting a whopping 24 locations across the UK. The free events are exclusive to our trade professionals, and we’ll be spotlighting all the latest news and regulations through our informative technical seminars.

With the introduction of our Renewables showcase to the event itinerary, we’ll help to equip our guests with the insights and tools they need to future-proof their work and they’ll get CPD certificates for coming along.

At the end of each TechTalk, someone from our Renewables team will host a Q&A, each designed to help guests looking to expand their knowledge, and businesses, into the renewables market. Guests can also

request 1-1 consultations to address their specific needs and questions.

By expanding our product range, providing exceptional customer support, and delivering comprehensive training initiatives, in just eight months, we have made significant contributions to support the renewables movement in the UK.

CEF Renewables does not plan to slow down anytime soon, with a packed calendar for the remaining months of 2023, and into the first half of 2024. We have a stand at Solar & Storage Live in October and the team will be there in force to support contractors and consumers with knowledge, consultancy and tips on how renewables can support their homes or businesses and how CEF are best placed to support.

Connecting customers

As with any business it is imperative to make continual improvements to our service model, and here at CEF

Renewables we take great pride in doing so. We have recently reviewed all carriage rates with our carrier partners, which means we can now deliver to all corners of the UK at more affordable rates than ever before. This is enabling our CEF branches to connect more customers with Net Zero technologies, helping the UK meet its climate change obligations. We’ve also reviewed our pricing and through improved commercial processes we are able to offer reduced solar panel, inverter and battery storage pricing across the board. All of which can be seen via cef.co.uk.

Finally, what to expect next as an existing, or prospective customer to CEF Renewables? In the coming months, we will be introducing next-day delivery services to a large swathe of mainland UK postcodes, as well as a premium timed service for pre-10 and pre-12 drops. And in the New Year CEF will be bolstering its commitment to low carbon technologies by stocking a wide array of air source heat pumps and associated parts, supporting Britain’s transition away from fossil fuelled heating.
