If you’re anything like me you will have spent the last couple of months looking forward to a spell of warm, dry weather in the UK, which we all just assumed would happen after last July’s heatwave. Well, I waited, and waited, and waited, and before I knew it here I am in the middle of August writing this column and, bar the odd couple of days here and there, it’s largely been a case of ‘scattered showers and sunny spells’ every time I’ve looked at the forecast on my phone.
So yes, it is September, school is back and the evenings are drawing in even earlier. But I cling to the hope every year that we do get a bit of a bonus summer that lasts well into September and even October. Apart from my love of the sunshine and blue sky there is a more serious side to this. The last few years have been extremely tough for everybody, from Covid and the subsequent effects of lockdowns on businesses, education and mental health, to government instability and a steep increase in the cost of living. Families everywhere will be struggling to make ends meet, with food prices going up and up, along with rent, mortgage rates and energy prices - it does makes you wonder when it will end.
The energy prices in particular have caused real concern in the last 12 months or so, as we all wonder just how long we can cope without heating our homes before we give in and switch on a radiator. For some, it comes to a choice between ‘eating or heating’. Fortunately, the drive to make the built environment more energy efficient has led to real progress in technology in what was once a niche market. As a journalist in the electrotechnical sector I have researched and written a lot around the subjects of building controls, smart technology and home automation and it has been exciting to learn all about the products emerging in these markets. Perhaps once seen as a novelty for the wealthy, home automation is becoming an integral part of house design that can give the occupier more control over home attributes such as lighting, security, temperature, appliances and even your entertainment systems. This can help put a stop to parents for ever moaning about their offspring’s bedroom lights being left on, or accidentally leaving the oven on.
The big takeaway is that more control means more efficiency and (potentially) subsequently lower costs for the person/people paying the bills. And electricians are latching on to the career potential they can unlock by upskilling to educate their customers about home automation systems and their benefits and securing those contracts. For the wholesalers there is opportunity as well to research the best systems on the market and make themselves a reliable and informed stockist that tradespeople will return to knowing they are buying from a trade counter that is “in the know” about where this sector is headed.
See you next month

LEDVANCE is to offer its professional range of LED lamps under its own name, making it easier for wholesalers, installers, electrical planners and professional users to make the transition to future-proof LED technology. The new branding will see the company offer a complete range of lighting solutions under the name LEDVANCE.
The LEDVANCE brand will offer lighting products in the Superior, Performance and Value classes, which are familiar from LEDVANCE luminaires. Clear naming makes it easy to find all the important product information, including the segmentation, at a glance. Although the names and EANs of the lamps are new,
they are clearly linked to the previous products, making them easy to find in the online product catalogue.
The new clearly laid out packaging shows that many of the professional LED lamps have become even more powerful to coincide with the change of brand. However, lamps from the residential sector such as the VINTAGE EDITION 1906 or the LEDinestra range, that will be further offered under the OSRAM brand, will continue to provide the same quality, performance and efficiency.
“ The new branding will see the company offer a complete range of lighting solutions under the name LEDVANCE. ”

The latest EIC article on stress outlines the importance of asking for help when it’s needed.
For many people, stress will naturally subside as circumstances settle without any clear intervention. If stress does persist though, it’s important to identify what’s causing you stress and take steps to try to combat it. Anxiety is less likely to go away without help, and there are some risks associated with not getting the help as early as possible. Anxiety could worsen and in severe cases this could start to have a significant impact on someone’s ability to work. In these situations, the consequences of undetected and untreated anxiety can impact a person and their family.
There are several reasons why men in particular may not seek help if they are struggling to deal with stress or anxiety. They could be worried that letting people know that they are struggling with anxiety could have an impact on their work or career progression. Other men may feel
ashamed and concerned that they are letting down their family. In these cases, some people might turn to substances to help them cope with symptoms of anxiety. This can include using alcohol or drugs as a way of numbing or masking some of the symptoms of anxiety. Although this might provide some relief in the short term, neither of these solutions are helpful over the long-term, and could pose a risk to a person's physical and mental health.
Anxiety is a 24-hour condition and if left untreated for long enough it could interfere with a person sleep to the extent where they develop insomnia. Consequently, they may struggle to get enough sleep and the sleep they do get is poor quality and unrefreshing. This could result in exhaustion during the day which makes dealing with stress and anxiety even more challenging. Poor sleep combined with anxiety puts people at significant risk of developing depression and this can trigger a vicious downwards cycle in terms of a person's mental health.
Thankfully stress is something that can be managed, and anxiety is a condition that can be successfully treated. This is something that an experienced mental health professional can support you with. A thorough assessment can pinpoint the problem, and a comprehensive, personalised treatment plan can help you overcome anxiety.
If you are experiencing stress or anxiety, don’t worry because there’s lots of help available. The first step is by reaching out and talking to someone. The Electrical Industries Charity are available to help from Monday – Friday 08:00am –8:00pm and Saturdays 9:00am –1:00pm. Email: support@electricalcharity.org or call the helpline on 0800 652 1618
QWhen was Hispec formed and what were the original company objectives?
A. Hispec was established back in 2002, initially as an importer of general electrical products, ranging from electronic transformers to fluorescent lighting modulars.
The initial mission statement of Hispec was to offer a wide range of quality products to the electrical wholesale market, with an emphasis on providing excellent levels of customer service to every aspect of the supply chain.
QWhat sets Hispec apart from other electrical product suppliers?
A. Over the past three years we have invested heavily in the recruitment of an experienced sales team that now offers national support for our electrical wholesale
customers. I believe that a major contributor to our continued growth is the unrivalled support that we offer the wholesaler, whether it be through staff training, joint contractor visits, trade day support or free of charge POS displays for their branches.
Our team listen intently to the requirements of their customers and as a result we were able to design and develop a range of products that filled a niche in the domestic fire and CO market; specification quality detectors at an affordable price point.
Due to our vertical integration supply chain model, we are now able to adapt and diversify our product offering in a much shorter timeframe than some of our larger, more corporately owned competitors –thus allowing us to penetrate a variety of market sectors with not just our fire detection range but also our emergency lighting and general LED lighting solutions.
QHow has the drive to reduce energy use impacted the lighting market?
A. The concentrated drive to reduce energy use has led to the development and rapid advancement of energy-efficient lighting technologies, notably Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). As the demand for these energy-efficient products continues to rise, the market for incandescent bulbs has almost disappeared completely.
One of the largest impacts to the lighting market in recent years will be the upcoming legislative changes that will effectively ban the use or sale of all fluorescent lamps in the UK by February 2024 – this is primarily being driven by the government’s need to achieve Net Carbon Zero by 2050.
Another significant impact of the race to reduce our energy consumption is the development of innovative lighting solutions, such as the newly launched remote monitoring system by Hispec, designed to cut down CO2 emissions, maintenance costs and the environmental impact of commercial lighting.
For this month’s Face to Face, we caught up with Chris Loughlin, Managing Director at Hispec, to get his thoughts on the industry
QWhat are the current trends in lighting and fire detection and what product lines have proved popular over the past 12 months?
A. We have seen the demand for life safety products increase significantly over the past 12 months, with a particular focus on Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Social landlords, property developers and private contractors have shifted a lot of their focus onto achieving their own corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals – one of the most prominent being the reduction in CO2 emissions that many are accomplishing through the enhanced use of IoT solutions and connected devices.
We believe that the implementation of the Building Safety Act in October 2023 will have a huge impact on how we as an industry approach life safety, focusing
predominantly on testing measures and compliance records.
QWhat are the future goals for Hispec?
A. We have some very aggressive growth plans built into our most recent three-year strategy, focusing primarily on a major expansion of our product offering, launching exciting new technologies that
are targeted towards compliance and then finally ensuring that the industry are educated and kept up to speed in the emerging markets and opportunities within the fire and lighting sectors.

Scolmore Group has welcomed Nathan Richards to the position of Area Sales Manager covering the Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands regions.
Nathan will be responsible for developing new and existing relationships with wholesalers and contractors to drive demand for the extensive Click wiring accessories and Elucian consumer units ranges.
Nathan has a wealth of experience to bring to his new role, having most recently spent a number of years on the wholesaler/distributor side of the business with a key operator in the industry, where he progressed from trade sales manager to trade area co-ordinator – picking up a ‘Trade Sales Manager of the Year’ award along the way.
Unicrimp has welcomed two new members to its rapidly expanding sales team. Stuart Clark joins the business as Area Sales Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland and Hannan Miah as Area Sales Manager covering the South East region.
Stuart joins the company with a wealth of experience in product design. In his most recent role within the lighting industry, he was responsible for designing electrical installations and CAD drawings for major hotel projects across London. He will be responsible for developing relationships with new and existing Unicrimp wholesale customers to drive sales of the extensive product offer and help them realise their sales ambitions.
Hannan’s position with Unicrimp follows a number of years working for a major labelling solutions manufacturer where he built up relationships with key electrical wholesalers and established the brand as part of the electrician’s tool kit.
At Unicrimp, Hannan will have responsibility for selling the company’s vast range of cable management consumables to the electrical wholesaler and supporting the wholesalers’ efforts to generate growth.
With the strategic appointment of new key personnel and the development of cuttingedge product ranges, backed by compelling new literature and marketing endeavours, Selectric is firmly positioned for future growth. As the company forges ahead, it maintains focus on continuous development, regularly listening to the electrical marketplace and collaborating with industry stakeholders to develop new products that align with their ever-changing needs.
Recent feedback has driven the company to invest significantly in its smart accessory range and other new and exciting products, coming throughout 2023 and 2024.
The 5M and 5M-PLUS ranges have long been a staple in the success of Selectric’s wiring accessories ranges, and new finishes are always being explored in line with current market trends. Among them is an exclusive new handcrafted dark bronze finish for a classic heritage look. Bringing added warmth and depth to the overall interior style, this luxurious metal adds a feeling of class and elegance to the overall aesthetic of any room.
Selectric is committed to innovation that anticipates the needs of clients. New products are vital for the growth and success of any business and Selectric believes that it is this proactive mindset that sets it apart from other manufacturers in the electrical industry.
The dark bronze is a durable finish which is worth considering if you have a busy family environment at home and will not dull over time. From modern to industrial or traditional settings, this finish adds a touch of sophistication making it a versatile choice for both residential and commercial spaces.
In response to the growing popularity of the Part M series, Selectric will be expanding the range with additional USB outboard rocker options. With a keen eye on inclusivity, the contrasting colours of the Selectric Part M plates and inserts help assist the visually impaired and allow easy location of the wiring accessories against the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the entire range boasts full antimicrobial certification, so you can rest assured with peace of mind that using these ranges will not assist in the progression of these kinds of bacteria.
Significant time and capital have been invested in the research and development of an innovative range of state-ofthe-art wireless products, set to be released as Selectric GRID360 Kinetic.
Powered by cutting-edge technology, wireless Kinetic switches remove the need for batteries or hardwired power cables without detriment to the dependability of traditional wired switches. There is no need for any complicated cable runs within walls and they can be installed on any surface to provide a clean, convenient, and safe system that is simple to install and easy to use.
The Selectric GRID360 Kinetic wall switches have been proven to be reliable in quality, stable in signal transmission, and well designed in appearance which will fit into the ever-popular GRID360 range of
products. Furthermore, the Selectric GRID360 Kinetic system uses a very small amount of energy and so reduces overall power consumption, which will result in economic savings and contribute towards an improved carbon footprint.
There is a wide range of kinetic receivers to choose from to solve real-life controlling requirements and Selectric will be offering a range of non-dimmable, dimmable, and smart receivers, suitable for wide input voltage from AC85-240V 50/60Hz. The lowest and highest brightness level can be set by an app on the smart dimmer. This helps the performance and compatibility of the dimmer to suit more dimmable light fittings whilst avoiding flicker and slow response issues often found with smart dimmers. A 30-150m transmission range (depending on context) ensures the switches will perform steadily under complex indoor or outdoor installations.
Investment in tooling and certification has also led to the development of additional new products, including:
● USB modules
● Illuminated grid modules
● Medical sockets
● Isolator grid modules
● Spacers
● Hotel key cards
● Outboard rockers/sockets - clean earth & USB
● Lockable euro modules
● Emergency red accessories
● Decorative pendants
● Decorative ceiling switches
● DC solar isolators
● ATOM CCT ranges
● Integrated fire-rated LED CCT downlights with plug-and-play connectors
Future ready
Selectric’s commitment to innovation also extends beyond product offerings. With a
refreshed brochure set to inspire in the coming year and an expanded digital presence through the website (www.selectricuk.co.uk) and on social networkchannels, there is serious investment going into the future of the company.
Wholesalers and their valued clients remain the cornerstone of Selectric’s success, and the company pledges to continue providing them with an unparalleled experience in order to future proof their position in the market.

Sport Ireland is the authority tasked with the development of sport in Ireland. Its remit includes participation in all sports, anti-doping, coaching and the development of the Sport Ireland Campus. Sport Ireland Facilities DAC are the designated company tasked with operating the Sport Ireland Campus & its facilities.
The Campus is the home of Irish sport for all and has facilities as diverse as the types of people who use them, from little ones learning to high-performance athletes. In 2017 they added a new flagship facility - the National Indoor Arena - a fully accessible, multi-sport and multi-purpose arena unlike anything seen in Europe before.
Built to the highest world-class standards and specifications, it ensures that Ireland has the best facility for indoor sports and events, which Irish sporting bodies and athletes can use.
The Phase 1 development of the National Indoor Arena includes:
● National Indoor Training Centre (NITC) –Multi-use sports hall with bleacher seating for approx. 1500 spectators
● National Indoor Athletics Training Centre (NIATC) – IAAF-compliant banked hydraulic track, six-lane 200m and five-lane 110m sprint tracks
● National Gymnastics Training Centre (NGTC) with fully equipped gymnastics recreation & high-performance areas
The original arena was lit using Thorn Lighting's 2kw metal halide Altis floodlights.
PEW hears how Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena upgraded to high-performance lighting kit from Thorn and sister brand Zumtobel to provide its sporting bodies, aspiring and professional athletes with world-class sporting facilities.
Sport Ireland approached Thorn and sister brand Zumtobel, both lighting brands of the Zumtobel Group, in search of an optimal 1-2-1 upgrade to LED and controls.
Ronan Meally Consulting Engineers and electrical contractor Tec Facilities Management worked with the Zumtobel Group to overcome the challenges of a tight turnaround and the constraints a live building presents to install Thorn's Altis LED floodlights, Zumtobel's CRAFT II Plus luminaires and LITECOM controls.
Niall Sheridan, Director and Head of Sales Zumtobel Group Ireland, commented: "As this was a live building, we were under a strict project timeline. Also, the original system used KNX. We switched to DALI and utilised our Zumtobel LITECOM system, which has given the NIA a fully controlled system that allows them to switch and adjust the lighting instantly."
The Altis LED and the CRAFT II Plus achieved 38% energy cost savings compared to the original scheme. With the addition of the LITECOM lighting control system, further savings are available to Sports Ireland Facilities.
These high-performance floodlights are suitable for the higher ambient temperature of indoor applications and offer benefits such as CO2 reductions,
longer life and reduced maintenance costs. In fact, the carbon saving associated with the lighting change is 130,464kg CO2 per annum.
Unlike the previous HID system, Altis provides flicker-free operation, a considerable benefit to a National Sports Facility when it comes to filming in HDTV. The flexible Altis solution centres around an LED brick concept. Two or three LED bricks can be tilted independently, and lighting designers can mix the optics – tilt and beam, in one floodlight. For the National Indoor Arena, a mixture of medium and wide beam optics and different tilt angles are utilised for better uniformity and reducing glare, ensuring Sport Ireland optimal lighting across all sporting activities.
Leo Fennin, Director at Tec Facilities Management, commented: “Tec Facilities Management were delighted to have teamed up with Zumtobel Group for the National Indoor Arena to install LED lighting. Tec Facilities Management found that the ZG team provided detailed drawings and documentation, making the installation a smooth success, along with the support team providing excellent backup for the project.”

Definity Complete has evolved from Click Scolmore’s well-established Definity flat plate accessory range and features all of the same attributes including modular switching but without the visible fixing screws. Because the face plates are supplied independently of the electrical inserts it means that the initial installation of the product can be carried out and any subsequent maintenance or decoration completed before the final fixing of the face plate.
The inserts are available in black, white and grey and the addition of Antique Brass to the range of cover plate finishes brings the total number of finishes to eight. As well as Antique Brass the popular range includes
Brushed Steel, Stainless Steel, Polished Chrome, White, Metal White, Matt Black and Metal Black.
The full range can be viewed on the Scolmore website –www.scolmore.com. The Definity Complete product brochure can be downloaded from the website as well as from the Scolmore Group app.

According to forecasters the El Nino in the Pacific this year is particularly strong, aided and abetted by underlying higher sea temperatures. The planet could be set for its hottest ever year in 2024 but, perversely, that could mean an especially cold winter 2023/24 for us. Gas and electricity prices aren’t exactly tumbling, so energy saving is going to climb higher on people’s priority lists.
How can you help installers to create the smart, intelligent control they want without coming up with solutions that cost so much they dwarf the savings and will take many years to pay for themselves? My advice is to help them keep it simple – focus on what you can deliver here and now. Fit reliable, flexible devices and then there’s always scope to go back and add more functionality for satisfied customers next year.
I’m a simple soul and, to my mind, the user must be able to control their automation easily and effectively. No matter how remarkable the electronics inside are, control must be straightforward. I also believe that most people still want to have that control in their own hands, even if they rarely
change the settings. Complex systems that can only be controlled by calling an installer back in are not on their shopping list.
I’ve seen the evolution of smart time controls from simple plug-in mechanical timers to Wi-Fi control with multiple programming options which have become easier and easier to use - and that’s smart enough for many people. With most of the population now being digital natives, seemingly born understanding and trusting this tech – the market has been ripe for adding good Wi-Fi control. It’s been a runaway success for us and you. I repeat, don’t overthink, don’t over-complicate.
Intelligent control is often differentiated from ‘basic’ smart control by being able to make devices talk to and control each other automatically. Of course, this level of integration is more in demand for commercial and high-end residential buildings, but these high levels of integration by custom installers have set the bar for customer expectations. People want the performance but not, perhaps, the budget of these top end projects. Now you can plug the gap.
PIR detection remains the most popular trigger for automated switching and perhaps the smartest thing you can do for customers is to make sure detectors deliver peak performance. Given that you’ve chosen a quality device, that often
means getting the adjustments right – time on, light levels to determine the hours when they will switch, and sensitivity so you can tailor the performance to the location. Tuning sensitivity is often forgotten but is important in determining if you want the trigger to work with small movement of, say desk or armchair bound people, or to react to high traffic in stairs and corridors. We make set up simple.
For instance, it would be useful for many people to have presence detectors switch a whole host of LED lighting or other devices. Now, over-the-counter smart devices are enabling this to non-specialist installers, who can effectively encroach at the margins of intelligent control to the delight of their customers!
With innovations like Timeguard’s new Wi-Fi LED floodlight, you have the option to use them stand alone or to give users control of other compatible lighting and devices in harmony. The LED200WFB’s indirect load activation can trigger other devices controlled by the same app when the PIR detects someone in the area.
The Wi-Fi option also avoids the complex wiring involved in very high-end projects.
So don’t force them to overthink it –focus on supplying them with the hereand-now opportunities to give their customers the help they need this winter.

The 1st of September marked the next stage of the ban on the sale of fluorescent lighting in the EU, which the UK is also observing. In line with the European Commission’s eco-design and Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives, all electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) that includes hazardous chemicals is being phased out. Not only is this to make the products safer, but also to advocate for modern alternatives like LEDs, which far surpass fluorescent products in terms of energy efficiency.
At point of publication, the ban includes T5 and T9 ring form fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in base (CFL), halogen pins (G4, GY6.35, G9) and T5 and T8 fluorescent tube lamps.
Many fluorescent lamp types have already been banned in accordance with EU directives. Here, Micaela Abbott, Sales Director at Megaman UK, looks specifically at the most recent ban on fluorescent tube lamps. She goes on to highlight the benefits and ease of switching to LEDs.
First and foremost, LED tubes offer significantly improved levels of efficiency, usually operating at wattage of 25 or less. As such, switching can provide instant and significant energy savings, especially for large buildings with a large number of light fixtures. Furthermore, this does not affect the performance of the tube, as LED tubes can deliver up to 185 lm/W while standard fluorescents provide just 50 to 100 lm/W –guaranteeing more light for less energy.
While the initial cost of LED tubes could be off-putting, LED products provide a much longer life span (approximately 75,000 hours) than their fluorescent counterparts (up to 15,000 hours), meaning that both OPEX and long-term CAPEX savings can be made by switching. It is also worth highlighting to contractors that the initial cost of LED tubes should decrease over
time as demand picks up and fluorescents disappear from circulation.
Furthermore, as they last so much longer, switching to LED lamps sooner rather than later can help a building to reduce its waste. As fluorescent lamps include toxic chemicals and have to be properly disposed of at a cost, the fact that LEDs are easily recyclable is another clear incentive.
Finally, LED tubes are also safer as they do not blow in the same way that fluorescent lamps do. Instead, at the end of life, their light output begins to disintegrate. A shattered fluorescent lamp is a significant health hazard, not only due to broken glass but because mercury is a neurotoxin that can cause a number of neurological conditions. Thankfully, not only are LEDs mercury free but there are shatterproof
LED tube lamps now available, which can be a key selling point for schools and the hospitality sector. Megaman’s new T8 LED tube, for example, has a glass case but it includes a protective PET coating as standard for all 2ft, 4ft and 5ft tubes to prevent them from shattering and becoming a health hazard.
While many will be well aware of the fluorescents ban, the ease of switching tube lamps to LEDs and the additional benefits of doing so are important information to share with contractors. With this information they can inform their own customers that this isn’t just a necessary and annoying switch, it’s incredibly beneficial in terms of efficiency, lifetime cost and safety. It’s a move in the right direction.

Why is firesafe cable on the rise, and how can electricians take it on?
C.K Tools has developed a product specifically for the job.
From blunt and defeated cable strippers to broken teeth, firesafe cable has proven a growing challenge for electricians in recent years. Working with its panel of electricians, C.K Tools’ product development team has heard countless tales of frustration, some of whom have resorted to biting the tough plastic jacketing when their tools fail them, with disastrous results.
But why is LS0H (low smoke zero halogen) cable increasingly prevalent?
While it isn’t a new product, a heightened awareness of fire safety, coupled with its growing use in the USA, Ireland, and Europe, has seen the fire-safe material come into more common usage in the UK recently.
Made from thermoplastic material, LS0H was first developed in 1979. The incredibly
tough cable jacketing is resistant to fire and fumes, and – critically – doesn’t produce smoke when it burns. While PVC may be cheaper, it produces a thick, acrid, highly toxic, and corrosive smoke. This smoke kills. Smoke inhalation, in fact, is a bigger cause of death than fire itself in fire related emergencies.
The King’s Cross Fire in 1987, for example, claimed the lives of 31 people and injured 100 more. What began with a lit match on a wooden escalator soon became a devastating blaze, but it wasn’t the flames that killed. Thick black smoke filled the ticket hall, leading to the deaths of almost everyone present. In response, cables containing halogen ceased to be used on the London Underground, and awareness and usage of LS0H cables grew.
Now, with the legacy of the Grenfell Tower tragedy looming large, there is a further rise in LS0H cable jacketing. In any area where smoke and toxic fumes could pose a risk to life – LS0H should be used. In public buildings and high-density housing in particular, use of LS0H is critical. Should a fire take hold, fumes from LS0H cabling will emit less that 0.5% HCL gas, dramatically cutting toxicity. What’s more, a lack of smoke will result in enhanced visibility, enabling easier evacuation.
It's also important to distinguish between LS0H and LSF (low smoke and
fume) cable. LSF is made from a modified PVC compound and emits 15 – 22% HCL gas upon burning. That’s eight to 13 per cent less than standard PVC. However, toxic fumes and thick black smoke will still pose a significant danger to life. While it is marginally safer than PVC, LSF should not be confused with LS0H which emits 0.5% HCL gas and therefore does not produce toxic fumes or black smoke, and does not pose a danger to life.
Cost-cutting measures – such as specifying PVC or LSF cable when LS0H is safer and more appropriate – are rightfully falling out of practice. New regulations around the use of LS0H are anticipated.
But LS0H is more difficult to work with than PVC cable. The material is stronger and less flexible than its PVC or LSF counterparts. Many electricians have reported challenges in stripping the LS0H, as standard cable strippers fail to meet the strength of the thermoplastic material.
Peels like a banana Specialist strippers, made from toughened materials and with multiple blades, should be used when working with LS0H cable. C.K Tools has developed a product specifically for the job. Using the correct bracket size for the width of the cable, C.K Tools’ LS0H Cable Strippers peel the cable along its length, like a banana skin, allowing for simple stripping. With two titanium nitride coated blades and four cable brackets, it’s designed to tackle any size of LS0H cable effectively, with minimal effort.
Brinley Buckley-Roberts, Brand Manager at C.K Tools, said: “We work very closely with a large panel of electricians in all our product development. If there’s a need out there, we know about it, and we work to produce the perfect tool to take on the challenge. Stripping LS0H was a real issue for our customers, and so we have meticulously planned, refined, prototyped, and tested the tool for the job. LS0H is,
rightly, here to stay, and it’s crucial that our customers are prepared.”
Beyond having the right tools for the job, taking on LS0H requires an understanding of the material. Due to its tougher nature, LS0H can be inflexible. This can lead to cracking during installation. To prevent this, specialist lubricant is recommended to reduce friction. Of course, it’s important to also choose non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive lubricant.
Working with LS0H cable may be more challenging and time-consuming, but choosing this cable over PVC or LSF could save lives. Armed with the right tools and equipment, and knowledge of its excellent fire safe credentials, tackling LS0H can and can be straightforward and worthwhile process.

KNX UK, the national group representing KNX certified manufacturers, distributors, integrators and training centres in the UK, is experiencing a surge in the number of electricians showing keen interest in KNX training and integration. The opportunity to cater to customers who value the freedom to choose from a diverse range of devices while ensuring they all integrate seamlessly has motivated electricians to seek knowledge and information on incorporating KNX technology into their offerings. Forward thinking electrical wholesalers are recognising this emerging trend and equipping themselves with comprehensive knowledge about KNX.
In this article we aim to provide an overview of the benefits of KNX and why electricians are increasingly seeing it as an opportunity for professional growth.
KNX is the only worldwide standard for home and building controls. It is an open protocol technology that enables seamless communication and integration between various smart devices and systems within a home. It was first introduced in 1990 and has since become a globally recognised standard for controls in residential and commercial buildings.
One of the most significant advantages of the KNX open protocol is its unrivalled interoperability. KNX devices from different manufacturers can effortlessly communicate and work together on a single network. More than 8,000 devices
from 500 different manufacturers use KNX technologies and are directly compatible with each other and many more via a gateway. KNX UK members manufacture a wide array of technologies such as switches and push buttons, control interfaces, gateways, servers, visualisations and entertainment products, all of which work in harmony with each other and every one of the other 8,000 certified products using one common language. This means that end-users and integrators can mix and match KNX certified products from various brands to create a personalised automation ecosystem that perfectly fits the building users’ needs and preferences.
In the fast-evolving world of home automation, it’s crucial for electrical wholesalers to keep their finger on the pulse of cutting-edge technology. KNX is one technology that continues to gain momentum and reshape the smart home landscape.
Home automation is increasingly being adopted as a means to improve energy efficiency. KNX allows users to intelligently control lighting, heating, cooling, and other electrical systems based on real-time data. It promotes sustainable living and allows wholesalers and integrators to assist environmentally conscious customers in creating energy-efficient homes.
The KNX open protocol simplifies the installation and maintenance of smart home systems. Certified integrators can significantly reduce setup time and eliminate compatibility issues. The decentralised architecture of KNX networks enhances reliability, ensuring that a single point of failure does not disrupt the entire system.
As the number of connected devices in homes grows, so does the concern for
security and privacy. KNX's closed-loop communication and robust security measures protect against unauthorised access and data breaches, making it inherently less susceptible to interference or hacking.
Electrical contractors who acquire KNX certification set themselves apart from competitors who may not have the same expertise. KNX UK Training Centres offer certified training at entry and advanced levels as well as KNX HVAC courses, taster and refresher courses. These qualifications demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, advanced skills and the ability to provide sophisticated automation solutions.
Electrical wholesalers should consider becoming KNX training centres. By offering certified training courses, wholesalers can empower electricians with the necessary expertise to design, install and maintain
smart home solutions using KNX. This will not only foster professional growth for electricians but also contribute to the broader adoption of KNX in the market.
As electricians increasingly seek to offer KNX smart home solutions, electrical wholesalers should take proactive measures to educate themselves about KNX and extend support to electricians through training and information sharing. KNX UK can provide information on training centres and forthcoming courses, plus advice and support such as product catalogues and technical guides through their technical distributor members.
Embracing KNX not only presents a lucrative opportunity for wholesalers to tap into a growing market but also propels the entire industry towards a brighter, smarter and more sustainable future.

Deligo has introduced a range of one-price ‘Fixing Packs’ to its ever-expanding product portfolio. Deligo is often asked for this type of product in relatively small quantities and previously the only option was for the wholesaler to tempt the user into buying a box or being left with a ‘split box’ on their shelf- both problematic in their own way.
These packs allow the end user to select and purchase the correct product for the job and cheaply test what may well be a new product to them. Each pack is resealable to minimise waste and is printed with full instructions and specifications for its use.
For the wholesaler this is a great way to showcase their fixings range. The packs are perfect for promoting sales for larger/bulk quantities and save the wholesaler the hassle of breaking down boxed Deligo stock in this range - a costly nuisance, especially come stock take time.
As an easy introduction to these products, Deligo has included them in the ever-popular ‘Snap, Send, Spend’ promotion that offers a ‘money back’ opportunity for wholesalers. Details of this can be found on the website or by contacting the sales team.

A look at the latest display solutions to help increase your in-store purchases.
The Carhartt heritage is built on tough workwear made for hard working professionals and is well suited to the exacting standards of tradespeople in the UK. Electrical wholesalers are in a good position to bring brands alive for these customers with stunning in-branch point of sale (POS) displays that have a true ‘wow’ factor and are a point of difference for their stores.
POS material remains a powerful marketing tool. Electrical wholesalers operate in a competitive industry where differentiating their offerings is vital. Well designed and strategically placed POS displays, signage and banners can effectively grab the attention of potential customers, creating brand awareness and promoting specific products or promotions. Eye-catching displays can have a significant and positive impact on customers, influencing their purchase decisions and driving sales.
For more than 130 years, the Carhartt brand has been known for its rugged construction, innovative designs, exceptional quality standards, durability and comfort and tradespeople actively seek
the workwear out. Point of sale is important to famous brands like Carhartt and the company takes great care to design in store displays with its merchant partners that show off the products at their very best.
Nick Poulson, UK Sales Manager at Carhartt, explained: “As our stockist partners will testify, working with Carhartt does not mean ‘pile them high and sell them cheap’; rather we talk to our stockists about their local market, their customer base and how we can work together to optimise the look of the products - and of course, sales. Our Visual Merchandise Team brings the in-store concept alive and we also carefully analyse the space in the branch to find the optimal position for the displays. This work and attention to detail ensures customer interest and a transformation in what stocking workwear can mean to the bottom line.”
There is little doubt that branding and imagery can provide a huge wow factor in branch. For a brand like Carhartt, imagery and values are extremely important, are consistent around the world and have an instantly recognisable look.
One other thing to remember about selling workwear in branch is that it has a seasonal element to it. Nick Poulson said: “At Carhartt, we have our core, ‘carry over’ products that are perennial favourites with the trade, such as trousers, jackets and hoodies. But there are also two distinct workwear seasons; spring/summer and autumn/winter when new collections are launched. The spring/ summer season includes T-shirts and caps while autumn/ winter gear includes more heavyweight items that protect tradespeople from the cold and the wet.”
Stunning POS material enhances the overall customer experience, making customers’ shopping experience enjoyable and efficient. A positive shopping experience can lead to customer loyalty and increased customer satisfaction, encouraging repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals.

The Government in Westminster is making moves to devolve elements of political decisionmaking to UK regions. In recent decades the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have become more autonomous, of course, but regions in England are also gaining more control and spending power – including over segments of training and education.
One example of this policy is the development of Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs). There are 38 of these programmes across England, and the key objective is to empower local employers to influence decisions about local training needs.
The government has allocated around £2 million per area to fund improvements and changes to local colleges so that they can provide young people and adults with the skills most needed in each area, based on the LSIP. The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) has been actively engaged in many of the regions where these programmes operate, highlighting the requirements of our members and their businesses.
Furthermore, local skills devolution is spreading across the UK. In England, some of the Mayoral Combined Authorities already have power over local adult education decisions, and some local authorities are also starting to gain greater control over adult educationpolicy and budgets.
The significance of this fuller version of devolution is that it gives access to far greater funding levels, which can
amount to tens of millions of pounds, creating much more potential for bringing about the sort of changes that benefit learners and local businesses.
It’s important to note that this devolution process in England does not directly affect apprenticeships, which remains in the control of the central government. ECA members will know that the electrical apprenticeship is one of the most successful and sought-after apprenticeships. It has the highest take-up of any construction trade apprenticeship in England and typically represents at least 20% of all construction apprenticeships.
However, while the electrical apprenticeship scheme in England attracts an average of 5,000 to 6,000 new people to the sector each year that’s not enough to meet our needs either now, or in the future. ECA estimates that we need some 10,000 new starters in our sector in England (12,000 in the wider UK) every year to keep up with sector demand and to replace those changing careers or retiring.
And as the UK transitions from away fossil fuels to an electrified low-carbon economy, the opportunities for members continue to grow, but we need qualified people to reap the commercial benefits.
There is no doubt that many young people are attracted to a career as an electrician, but the number of apprenticeships available doesn’t match the demand. Various colleges have been dropping the delivery of apprenticeships and opting for full-time electrical courses, which are shorter and entirely classroom based.
Unfortunately, students graduating from a full-time course that may take one or two years then face the reality that they are not qualified ‘electricians’. And research for the LSIPs shows that average progression rates from a full-time electrical course into an electrical apprenticeship are less than 10%.
So, although the colleges report high levels of employment after their electrical courses, it’s not usually as an electrical apprentice. Many local authorities are also frustrated when they realise they are funding the courses but not getting suitably qualified ‘electricians’ as the end result. In short,
“ ECA estimates that we need some 10,000 new starters in our sector in England every year to keep up with sector demand.”
Andrew Eldred, ECA Director of Workforce and Public Affairs, explains why devolving the design and funding for certain types of training in England is an opportunity for members to influence outcomes in their local areas.
hardly anyone is getting what they need from these classroom courses.
However, the ECA believes that within this problem lies a solution. If colleges and students can be better supported through closer relationships with local employers, it could be possible to make a smoother transition from a full-time college course to an apprenticeship. The electrical apprenticeship highlights the importance of treating each candidate on their own merits, particularly giving due credit for learning they have already undertaken. By taking this learning into account, apprenticeships could be accelerated and made more attractive for smaller businesses to support, helping to increase the number of
people joining our sector as qualified, and ultimately competent, electricians. Engagement between businesses and local colleges through programmes like LSIPS is vital for this to work. ECA research shows that there can be demand for different skills across regions. With this approach, ECA
members have the potential to ensure that local colleges are running courses that match regional requirements.
At a national level, ECA has set the tone by engaging with the design and delivery of T Levels that are relevant to our sector and which can help young people transition to an apprenticeship. However, local training solutions can only be designed and delivered locally, so engagement from ECA members with their regional training arrangements is vital. In addition, the roll-out of devolved adult education budgets and delivery is picking up pace, providing a further opportunity to influence the future skills base of our sector.
