BREAD AND BUTTER

T

he above is a line I picked up from an article within this issue that I think has particular relevance to the current time we’re living in. The next few months, and possibly years, are going to be tough – an apparent renewed focus of building aside, people’s pockets are not going be as deep as they were and that makes me wonder if going back to basics is the way forward. Over the last five or so years, we have seen an explosion in smart technology products hitting the market and heard that smart technology is only on an upward trajectory and this trend looked set to continue with more and more people investing in smart technology, including in residential, business and commercial spaces. However, with the uncertain economy now before us as a result of an extended lockdown period due to the Covid-19 virus, it may be wise to proceed with caution. Looking at your bread and butter, the products that keep your business ticking over, is as important as ever in light of everything that is going on. Within this issue, Timeguard examines the idea that less is more. Specifically, the company looks at lighting controls. Timed switching and dimming sounds simple in a world of complex smart homes that can even work intuitively without the user needing to input anything. But in this new world, budgets are being slashed and purse strings tightened. So why not offer your customer and by extension, theirs, a solution that does the job at an affordable price – giving the client what they want and keeping your business ticking over. It’s not ideal as I am sure some people would have had dreams of expansion and increased turnover, but keeping things moving in a sustainable way is now just as important. Generally, a tempered expectation of customer demand in the next 12-18 months will be needed. I am not saying ignore new tech and innovation completely, as it is constantly evolving and creating exciting products and solutions, but keeping an eye on those bread and butter lines and the changing requirements of the customer in the upcoming months will be key. Looking at this issue of PEW we shine a light on the world of lighting, both internal and external, as well as looking at lighting controls and how keeping down costs is going to be crucial on building projects – an opportunity arises for the wholesaler. Meanwhile a new feature enters the PEW world: Tools. Here we consider some of the latest trends in the tools market as well as finding out more about the rise of cordless battery technology. CK Tools has been using feedback from professionals to develop its range of products, so make sure you are up to date with the latest trends. I hope those of you that are now back to some sort of normality are prospering in this difficult time, it would be great to hear from you and how you have coped during the last 4-5 months. Please don’t hesitate to get in contact on my email at the top left hand side of this page and tell me how you are getting on and moving forward. Have a good month and enjoy the issue.

NEWS & VIEWS construction recovery vital says fmb

FMB: BUDGET MUST ACCELERATE CONSTRUCTION RECOVERY The Government must use the Budget to bring forward greater investment in the construction sector to help boost jobs and activity, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). This is in response to ONS construction data published which found that output fell by 35% in the second quarter of 2020, driven by record falls in new work and repair and maintenance. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, says: “The Government must use the forthcoming Budget to invest in our housing stock, both new builds and improving our existing buildings.

This will support recovery in the construction industry and create jobs. Construction output plummeted during the coronavirus lockdown, contributing to the UK officially entering a historic recession during the second quarter of this year. While we know that the industry is slowly recovering, output is struggling to regain pre-coronavirus levels. The Government must prioritise bringing forward planning reforms and investing in local authority planning departments to help house builders start building out new sites swiftly. Investment in construction apprenticeships is also important, as

this will create jobs for young people in a sector that has historically struggled with skills shortages.” Berry concludes: “Investing in our existing buildings offers opportunities for communities across the UK, and is labour-intensive work. I'm calling for an ambitious national energy efficiency retrofit strategy that builds on the Green Homes Grants scheme, to give long-term confidence in this growing market and to achieve the scale of change that’s needed. In conclusion, construction recovery must have local builders at its heart.”

LED USE INCREASES ACCORDING TO MARKET REPORT According to AMA Research’s latest Lighting Market Report the move towards the use of LEDs has increased, where this technology is estimated to represent 14% of lighting appliances owned by UK households. LEDs growth in market share has been underpinned by energy efficiency regulations, which subsequently lead to the removal of sale of almost all incandescent lighting, and most halogen lighting. LEDs now represent the majority of UK lamp sales. LED lamps have seen significant improvements in light output and quality in recent years, including a wider spectrum and warmer white light, helping to boost

their acceptability in the market. LEDs are a relatively ‘low tech’ product and the barriers to market entry are low. Initially, the introduction of LED lighting provided a boost to market value as LEDs commanded a premium price compared with ‘traditional’ incandescent lamps, as well as with halogen and CFL products. However, a massive increase in supply, as new market entrants have appeared, has led to an extreme level of price deflation. The interruption of construction activity and the broader economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic will lead to a sharp fall in the value of the UK lighting market in 2020. Beyond 2020, the prospects for the

lighting market are difficult to evaluate as the speed of recovery remains uncertain. It is currently forecast that the market is expected to decline 16% in 2020, with a return to growth in 2021, increasing 12% between 2020 and 2024. The lighting market supply chain has become more fragmented with the advent of LEDs, with organisations from non-traditional lighting backgrounds, particularly those with a background in semi-conductor manufacture, entering the market. LED technology will become increasingly dominant in the lighting market and is expected to be used almost universally by 2024.

EDA WELCOMES CONSTRUCTION SECTOR JOBS PORTAL Margaret Fitzsimons, along with 140 stakeholders from across the UK’s construction sector, attended the launch of the Talent Retention Scheme (TRS), a new free-to-use online portal designed to stop an exodus of employees with valuable skills and expertise and to help companies recruit the talent needed to embark on new projects. The AdobeStock_peterschreiber.media Scheme is a pragmatic response to support a sector already reeling from the impact of the pandemic: UK construction faces a 25% decline in activity this year putting over 500,000 jobs at risk. Employers looking for skilled employees can advertise vacancies and job seekers (including apprentices) can upload their CVs and keep abreast of opportunities. Led by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), the Talent Retention Scheme is backed by a £1 million investment from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and is expected to save employers £100 million in recruitment fees over the next 12 months. In the run up to the launch, over 430 companies had pre-registered 170 job vacancies on the portal.

EDA REPRESENTED ON TCI TASKFORCE MD of LEW Electrical Distributors and a member of the AWEBB buying group, represented the EDA once again at the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) Trade Credit Insurance Group meeting. The Group, chaired by John Newcomb, CEO of BMF, brings together companies from across the construction sector as well as representatives of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, (BEIS), the CBI, and several organisations from the world of insurance. Working with BEIS, the key aim of the group is to ensure that levels of trade credit insurance are maintained enabling businesses to trade with confidence through these difficult times. A further aim is to raise awareness of the Government Trade Credit Insurance Scheme in the construction sector. BEIS will be measuring the success of the scheme across all industries and KPIs will include the number of insurance companies signing up to the scheme as well as the maintenance of the levels of trade credit insurance in all sectors of the economy.

FACE TO FACE

PEW recently interviewed Glen Krise, Managing Director of Megaman UK – a leading manufacturer of energy efficient lighting solutions. Here he talks about the commitment to innovation and improving the offering to the wholesaler and installer.

FACE TO FACE MEGAMAN

Q

How did you get into the industry and what is your current position?

we improve this? What can we do to this product to make things that bit simpler for the installer? Given we own our factories, this allows us to be really agile when it comes to developing product in line with market drivers; creating innovative products that meet all our customers’ needs.

A. After leaving full time education, my fist job in the industry was as a customer service agent for what was then Thorn EMI. It was there that I quickly developed an interest in lighting and the professional electrical distribution market and attended as many courses on lighting as I could. Since then I have had a number of roles with companies including Sylvania, Chloride Bardic, MK Electric and Honeywell, covering products from lighting and lamps, to door bells and intruder alarms, but I have always stuck with the electrical market. Finally, I joined Megaman in 2010 where I am now Managing Director of Megaman UK and Megaman GmbH as well as Director of parent company Neonlite International.

Q

How has the industry changed over recent years?

A. We have seen significant growth in the integrated LED fixtures market due to their long life span, lumen capability and also the design flexibility that is brought about by the integration of lighting technology within the product allowing the fixtures to be much slimmer. As the lifespan of LEDs has increased, we have found that lamps are being seen less as a commodity item and more as an investment that will last. As such, we have seen an increase in sales of our Professional LEDs, as well as integrated fixtures because specifiers now have the confidence that they will not need to be replaced on a regular basis.

Q

What is Megaman trying to achieve in the next few years?

What do you consider Megaman’s unique selling points?

A. We will be expanding our range of flexible one box fixture solutions. Shelf space is always an ongoing issue in many wholesalers as they struggle to accommodate all of the lines they need to service their customers. Our one box solutions not only aid the management of shelf space for the stockist, they can also be kept on the contractor’s van as a day to day essential, as well as providing a variety of adaptable features to the end client.

A. Our experience in the market place is definitely a selling point along with our staff’s passion for what they do. Since Megaman emerged on to the UK market in 1994 we have been constantly adapting to the needs and challenges of the lighting sector as requirements and legislation have changed. Our sales team is currently headed by Micaela Abbott, National Sales Manager, who joined Megaman 13 years ago after working for an electrical wholesaler herself. Her enthusiasm and the passion of the entire sales team is second to none.

For example, our new RENZO LED Modular Bulkheads – which are generally large, bulky products to stock – come with combined Colour Change Technology (CCT), a dual lumen output and a plug and play microwave and emergency sensor all in one box. This means there is only one modular bulkhead line that a wholesaler needs to stock to fulfil all the needs of its customers. We have several more innovative offerings in the pipeline that will fulfil a similar requirement – easing the issues of the stockists while also covering the needs of the customer as well.

In terms of what sets us apart, I think that really lies in our commitment to innovation. We take a standard product that hasn’t been changed for years and ask: how can

THE TEST OF TIME Matt Parton, Product Development Manager with ESP and Sangamo, takes a look at the time switches product category and how it is evolving to meet the growing requirement for smarter solutions.

W

e are living in a time of rapid technological development, with smart homes and the internet of things seeming to dominate the sector. With the speed of this change and the huge number of smart devices and products being developed, it can be a challenge for electrical professionals to keep up to date with the latest new products and trends. It can also be easy to overlook the traditional products that are still in demand. With our time switch ranges we continue to see demand for the traditional products, but we have continued to develop the range so that we are also able to meet demand for smarter products and offer wholesalers a choice of products that will allow them to upsell to their customers.

applications, not just because of its reliability but its ease of use. The simple dial and levers make setting the switch up for daily fixed timings a breeze with no complicated menu options to navigate through. All Round Pattern Time Switches are also 20 Amp rated, providing a more robust switch than most other products on the market. We regularly hear from people with Round Pattern Time Switches still going strong after 40 and 50 years. When they eventually need a new switch they reasonably assume, because of its age, that it might not be possible to get a direct like for like replacement. However, because the original design has never needed to be updated, an RPTS you buy today is completely interchangeable with one bought decades ago.

Round pattern time switch We have been manufacturing our Round Pattern Time Switches at our Port Glasgow factory for over 65 years and have sold over 11 million units in that time. The installation of a Round Pattern Time Switch (RPTS) used to be a regular job for many electricians and, despite the electromechanical time switches being less common today, we still sell over a thousand units each month, both as replacements and as brand new installations. The Round Pattern Time Switch is trusted by installers for a wide variety of

have their “partManufacturers to play by ensuring that they provide easy access to product training and support for the wholesaler.

The switches are split into four categories – Basic ‘black dial’ 24-hour time clock for simple on and off switching of up to 20A; Standard 24-hour ‘red dial’ switch with added 100 hour battery reserve; Solar Range – specially designed for lighting applications and Digital Range – the newest addition combines the high capacity and reliability of the electromechanical models but provides full seven day programming. DIN rail and panel mounted time switches Other options include DIN rail and panel mounted digital time switches that include NFC capability. Near Field Communication (NFC) is a low-powered, wireless communication technology that allows devices to exchange information from just a few centimetres away. Using the free Sangamo Connect app on an Android NFC enabled smartphone allows the installer to upload a created programming schedule; download an existing schedule to store or amend, as well as transfer

010_PEW_SEPT20_Layout 1 20/08/2020 12:30 Page 11

programmes from one switch to another. This enhanced capability makes this form of time switch so much easier to program and has been exceedingly well received by the industry. Another strong feature of the NFC range of timers is that they will switch up to 600 watts of LED lighting. The range also includes Astro Switches also known as solar switches, which automatically adjust their on and off times to match sunset and sunrise times. A selection of Standard Switches completes the range. These are often used to control heating, ventilation and door entry systems. Bluetooth compatible The latest development in this category has seen the addition of a Bluetoothcompatible range of timers to the DIN Rail Time Switch collection. This range is designed to offer convenience and versatility to the user and broaden the product category reach to a wider potential market, where it will help manage costs in residential, commercial and industrial

applications. It uses Bluetooth technology to programme the timer and is compatible with Android and IOS, and applications include lighting, security, heating, ventilation, irrigation and horticulture. As well as Bluetooth communication, these time switches feature zero-crossing technology supporting up to 600W LED load. This technology protects the relay contact and extends service life, therefore helping the lighting controls to match the long lifespan of LED lighting systems. The new Bluetooth range consists of four products – Weekly Bluetooth 2-module 1channel, 7 day timer with 100 on/off operations; Weekly Bluetooth 2-module 2-

channel, 7 day timer, with 100 on/off operations; Astro Bluetooth 2-module 1channel, 7 day timer with 100 on/off operations and Astro Bluetooth 2-module 2-channel, 7 day timer with 100 on/off operations. A free to download app, the ‘Save’n carry’ app is available for both iOS and Android. It has an intuitive user interface that allows easy and fast programming via smartphone and tablet. As advancements in technology continue to drive new product development, it is essential that both the professional installing the products and the wholesaler supplying them, do their research to stay up to date with the latest products and trends. Manufacturers have their part to play too by ensuring that they provide easy access to product training and support for the wholesaler. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

SPECIAL REPORT

HERE FOR YOU Marie Parry, Group Marketing Director, Scolmore Group, looks at the steps the company has taken through the coronavirus crisis and how it is operating under a ‘new normal’.

T

hese are without doubt the most challenging times that our industry, the country and the world has faced in the last century. It is now more than 100 days since the country was placed into lockdown and our way of working and living was changed overnight beyond recognition. As we start to emerge from the tight restrictions of lockdown, we are learning to embrace a new way of working that puts the safety of our employees, customers and suppliers at the forefront of everything we do. When we look back to early February we were still talking about coronavirus as something that was happening in China. When it became apparent in March that the UK was heading for an enforced lockdown, we needed to urgently prepare ourselves for the challenges that were coming. With a company the size the Scolmore Group – in excess of 250 employees – and working across a number of sites in the UK – Tamworth and Redditch in the Midlands, as well as Glasgow – there was a considerable amount of planning and organisation required to work out how best we could keep the company operating in this new environment.

Hurdles By the time total lockdown was announced on Monday, 23rd March, the entire work force was either working from home or placed on furlough. A lot of work had already been undertaken to ensure all the right equipment, systems and procedures were in place to allow members of the various teams to work safely and securely from their new home environments. Like many others, we were faced with a sudden and dramatic fall in orders, as construction work was put on hold and

12 SEPTEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

wholesale counters decided to close in line with government guidelines. As we continued to make plans behind the scenes for how best to keep the business going during the early days, we focussed a lot of attention on communicating with our wholesale customers, contractors and installers via direct marketing as well via the various digital platforms. We wanted to let them know that we remained open for business and also wanted to provide them with some valuable resources that they could use during the time when they were unable to work. Working with a much scaled back operation, and with the safety of our staff a priority, we were able to continue to supply our full range of products to the professional electrical market, through the wholesale channel. We have always had the ability to hold vast stock levels which means that we were able to continue to fulfil orders from across the group, with our full range of wiring accessories from Scolmore, lighting and lighting control products from Ovia UK, security and fire protection products from ESP and cable accessory products from Unicrimp all currently available.

012_PEW_SEPT20_Layout 1 20/08/2020 11:59 Page 13

AdobeStock_Yevhen

Moving forward We appreciate that there are many in the industry who have been unable to work, but we believe that this can be seen as an opportunity to spend time we may not normally have, to catch up on some of the latest industry news and developments, get up to speed with recent new product developments and legislation, and maybe even to add to our skillset. Across the Scolmore Group of companies there is a wealth of resources that contractors and wholesalers can access. Each group company website hosts a vast range of products, including range catalogues as well as technical specification brochures. Product videos that make it easy to understand the workings of individual products can be accessed on YouTube. There are case studies demonstrating how products from the group have been specified and

installed to provide solutions for specific projects and these include the recent use of our Mode antimicrobial wiring accessories at a newly expanded emergency care unit. The ‘in the press’ sections provide some in depth articles covering a range of topics from smart solutions, to fire-rated downlights safety.

We are now learning to live with a ‘new normal’. Every aspect of our working environment has been affected as we have had to implement all the necessary measures to ensure that social distancing and hygiene standards are met across all departments and at all points of interaction. As restrictions continue to be gradually lifted and with building projects being resumed, we are seeing a steady increase in orders coming through. However, with a local lockdown currently in force in Leicester, we are only too aware that we all remain in a precarious situation and we will be taking the progress we are making one day at a time. LIGHTING

LEADING EDGE Mike Collins, Sales Director with Ovia, looks at how the company continues to lead the way in developments in fire-rated LED downlights

I

t was 2005 when the first fire-rated downlight was launched within the electrical contracting sector. The product was the FlameGuard fireprotected and acoustic-rated downlight and the manufacturer was Scolmore Group company, Ovia. Since then, the company has continued to innovate and drive the market by adapting its fire-rated downlights range to meet the changing construction environment and associated legislations.

New guidelines from NHBC on recessed light fittings have provided the industry with its most recent challenge. With the increasing use of I-joists as part of floor construction – around 70% of new build homes feature engineered timbers joists, as opposed to solid timber joists which dominated the market 20 years ago – the National Housebuilding Council (NHBC) has updated its technical guidance on recessed light fittings in ceilings to intermediate floors in houses. As a result, the NHBC now requires test evidence showing that recessed downlights are suitable for a similar I-joist and plasterboard combination. Testing times Ovia Lighting’s full range of Inceptor and FlameGuard fire-rated downlights have always been subject to the strictest test measures to ensure they offer full compliance and have the corresponding test certification to meet the very latest regulations. As such, they have all been tested for fire resistance compliance with all ceiling types – solid timber, I-joists and metal web joists.

The company has recently successfully completed further fire resistance testing to demonstrate that its fire-rated downlights satisfy the new guidelines issued by the NHBC. The testing was carried out by Efectis – a major player in fire science, covering all fire safety expertise in testing and modelling, certification and inspection around the world. The new test consisted of a 30 minute I-Joist construction – 220mm I-Joist; 15mm Type A Plasterboard and 22mm Floor Deck (which Ovia believes to be the most common construction types now used within the industry). All fire-rated downlights from the Ovia INCEPTOR and FLAMEGUARD ranges formed part of the test. Today, Ovia offers a fire-rated LED downlight product to suit virtually every installation requirement. The focus continues to be on developing products that offer the very best in quality and features, represent excellent value for money and are designed to optimise performance, energy savings and safety. PRODUCT FOCUS: OVIA INCEPTOR OMNI

Pico FG has a number of additional benefits. It is supplied with a pre-attached fly lead rather than terminals to make installation quick and easy, thus saving time on the job by the installer. It is also compatible with the Insulation Support Clip, which allows installers to lay thermal insulation directly over the Inceptor Pico. The Insulation Support Clip creates a 20mm air space above the driver which allows air to circulate and cool.

Ovia’s Inceptor Omni is a fire-rated, dimmable downlight – rated for 30, 60 and 90 minutes. It is one of the original premium Inceptor products first launched in 2017. With flexibility and ease of installation as vital attributes, its key features are an adjustable colour temperature switch – allowing the selection of colour temperatures to suit the installation, interchangeable fixed and adjustable bezels, and an insulation support bracket for use when insulation is present. It comes pre-wired with Flow connector – the pre-wired connection system that speeds up installation and allows faster removal for testing and replacement of components.

OVIA INCEPTOR NANO5 Ovia’s Inceptor Nano5 is a compact, firerated, dimmable downlight, which packs an array of features into its shallow profile. The high-performance 4.8W LED downlight is suitable for a variety of domestic applications. There are two models – Inceptor Nano5 Fixed and Inceptor Nano5 Adjustable, which allows the luminaire to be moved and directed to where light is needed. Both feature a compact, high-powered driver which is suitable for installation in a fire rated ceiling and incorporates the Flow Connector. Inceptor Nano5 Fixed is designed for a 60mm cut out, to fit a recess depth of

45mm, while the Adjustable version is designed for a 75mm cut out, with a recess depth fitting of 54mm. Inceptor Nano5 offers a 30, 60, and 90 minute fire rating, and is acoustic and airflow compliant. It utilises the latest LED technology and the custom-built, multifaceted lens creates a halogen-style lighting effect. There are 12 products in the range, with both the Fixed and Adjustable Bezel designs available in three finishes – White, Chrome and Satin Chrome – and in two colour temperatures, warm white and cool white. The fixed bezel has an IP65 rating, and IP54 for the adjustable.

It has a 50mm and has an adaptable cutout to fit apertures of between 70mm and 75mm in diameter. The height of the spring brackets has been increased to allow the product to be installed in ceiling thicknesses of 36mm.

FLAMEGUARD The award-winning FlameGuard downlight range offers a collection of GU10 downlights and downlight housing – all of which have been tested to withstand fire at 30, 60 and 90 minute intervals.

PICO FG

Located inside the top of the downlight and around the outside of the body, the FlameGuard seals are manufactured from an intumescent material that expands in the event of fire. As the material expands it fills the ventilation holes in the top of the downlight and also seals the ceiling cut-out.

Inceptor Pico FG – a fire rated, fixed integrated LED downlight which offers a cost-effective LED solution and is ideal for installations where the void depth is limited and fire rating is required. As well a fire rating of 30, 60 and 90 minutes,

Fitted to all FlameGuard downlights as standard is a moisture seal, which prevents warm moist air from passing into the cold space above a ceiling where it could cause condensation to form.

GET SMART Have you ever thought that perhaps lighting control has got a bit too smart? So, why make heavy work of lighting control – just keep it simple.

A

t the end of the day, what sort of equipment and devices do you sell most of? Are you maximising those sales by offering products that installers will want to try out – and then get hooked on for job after job? A lot of homeowners and office users are happy with timed switching and dimming and often don’t need complex scene setting and colour coding. Of course, apps on the phone such as Alexa and Tuya are welcome new ways of control but, unless you are ripping out and replacing with a whole new lighting installation, that’s about as far as most people need to go – and as much as they want to spend. While the ever-more complex options for smart lighting control may be creating a market for high-value, high-margin products; they aren’t displacing traditional yet. Furthermore, with the exception of some specialist wholesalers, the bulk of revenues and profits for most of you are still coming from the more traditional approaches to timing and dimming. Most of your customers are really only looking for the best ways to control timed switching and dimming, with an added element of low-cost WiFi remote control. They want devices that can be used to improve and add ‘new tricks’ to existing installations; and these are the bread and butter products to focus on as we contemplate another period of economic uncertainty. End users are likely to be reluctant to commit to expensive newbuild and refurbishment projects in the coming months, but keener than ever to get value for money. Installers will be looking for style, quality and the flexibility to create better installs.

What are these volume options? Swapping out old wall switches for smarter replacements with built in timing or PIR control. High-quality branded models will work well with LED (check they have specific LED ratings) and, of course, they are simple wire for wire replacements into the same back box. Any problems with existing LED lamps that flicker due to the small current that a smart switch is drawing at all times can be resolved with the patented Timeguard Automatic Load controller. Similarly, making mandatory Fused Spurs work harder but swapping them for models that also include timing and boots functions has to be one of the easiest ways to automate. Mounting PIR presence detectors to ensure lights are only on when needed is great for larger homes or commercial premises . Caveat emptor: good branding gives you the quality assurance you need. If homeowners don’t like the look of them, installers might suggest the mini versions that are now available. Of course, the promise of genuinely easy installation never falls on deaf ears at the wholesale counter, so be ready with ideas like our linkable mini PIRs. Connect the master and the others just plug in to each other as they run a series of detectors across the ceiling void.

Dimming LEDs should now be a doddle, but compromise on quality when choosing what to stock. Purpose designed universal LED dimmers remove the risk of getting the specification wrong, and models like the Theben DIMAX deliver fit flush into the old back box, whole offering easy programming for light level and types. Wi-Fi control. Try the apps yourself – you’ll soon see if they are well maintained or if they are going to lead to a lot of disappointment and returns. How futureproof the devices are will depend on the quality of the control chips built into them – this is no market to be buying from firms that don’t back up their products with meaningful guarantees. That applies across your whole stocklist, of course! Your best starting point? Simply jump onto the manufacturer’s website. Most quality sites will have products and specifications and all the key benefits you need to make meaningful product choices and if this isn’t enough, you can always search for that hard copy catalogue.Check out our website for the latest on new products. COPPER SAFETY Andrew Wilson at Varilight highlights the virtues of Antimicrobial Copper Switches and Sockets in helping to stop the spread of viruses.

W

ith the global Covid-19 pandemic continuing to profoundly affect our lives, we are all learning to adapt to the “new normal”. In addition to requiring us to find new ways to coexist safely, the pandemic highlights the need for changes in our approach to building infrastructure and it is becoming clear that even the smaller details like which switches and sockets we use can make a really big difference. Alongside the global effort to develop vaccines and treatments for Covid-19, research into the transmission pathways which drive the reproductive value, or “Rrate”, of the virus has also stepped up. Airborne droplets and aerosol mists appear to be common sources of transmission but we are also advised to take steps to protect ourselves in case we come into contact with contaminated surfaces. Messages urging regular and thorough hand washing, as well as rigorous cleaning, are being widely promoted. Nevertheless, even when strict hygiene measures are adopted, surfaces can all-to-easily become contaminated again when next exposed to virus particles. Arguably a more comprehensive solution to combating contact transmission of viruses would be to re-evaluate the materials we select for regularly touched surfaces in favour of those with inherent antimicrobial properties.

Antimicrobial range Certain types of plastic can be engineered to act against microbes, often by applying antimicrobial coatings or additives to the material. But better still are metals like copper which are naturally antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal and are sufficiently versatile to be used to manufacture many frequently touched items like door handles, finger plates, counter tops, as well as switches and sockets. At Varilight we are highlighting the availability our ‘Cu29’ Tarnishing Antimicrobial Copper range of switches and sockets and taking every opportunity to explain the effectiveness of copper in protecting against viruses, bacteria and other microbes. Research from the University of Southampton has found that a coronavirus (in this case HuCoV-229E) died on copper surfaces within minutes compared to many days on some other surfaces.* Previously, manufacturers have targeted antimicrobial ranges at health and care environments in particular but the benefits of installing copper products more widely have come into sharp focus; antimicrobial surfaces can contribute to reducing transmission in all shared environments and public spaces. With such clear evidence of its efficacy, wholesalers can be confident in promoting the use of copper antimicrobial wiring accessories for projects where otherwise an opportunity might be missed to reduce transmission of viruses and other pathogens.

18 SEPTEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Copper safety Normal tarnishing or wear of copper surfaces will not impair the antiviral effectiveness of the product so, importantly, copper keeps working 24/7 to kill virus particles and reduce infection in between regular cleaning and sanitisation procedures. Varilight’s Cu29 range features faceplates, rockers and knobs made from solid copper with no special coatings so this essential effect won’t reduce overtime. The screwless faceplates clip on, removing the need for exposed fixings or screwheads where germs might accumulate. We can all do our bit to help stop the spread of the virus and wholesalers can play their part too by advertising the availability of antimicrobial wiring accessories to their customers so that installers can help their clients make informed choices when selecting switches and sockets for their homes and businesses. With Varilight manufacturing in the UK and holding stock locally, wholesalers can expect a fast turnaround on orders which gives electricians the opportunity to offer antimicrobial copper as an option for installations approaching final fix as well as for future projects. * “On copper, and a range of copper alloys -collectively termed 'antimicrobial copper' -- the coronavirus was rapidly inactivated (within a few minutes, for simulated fingertip contamination).”

THE GREAT

OUTDOORS With the publishing of its new 2021 catalogue, Knightsbridge advises that now is a good time to take stock on outdoor electrical products. Here, we take a look at some of the outdoor lighting options it has available.

ith lockdown giving those with gardens a greater appreciation of them, there’s a fantastic opportunity to profit from the lighting and power solutions for the great outdoors offered by Knightsbridge. The comprehensive IP-rated Weatherproof and Outdoor ranges can help transform patios and gardens into thriving hubs of leisure activity both day and night. The new Weatherproof collection includes sockets, fused spurs, switches and switch boxes (including remotecontrolled items); plus, ancillaries such as enclosures and connectors. For lighting, there’s a huge selection – from floodlights for domestic and commercial applications, and exterior decorative fittings for gardens and decking.

Safety first With safety paramount, all wiring devices and ancillaries are rated to a minimum of IP66. This means they are, first, completely secure against ingress of dust and any possibility of accidental contact and, second, protected against high pressure jets of water. Connectors are rated to IP68, making them safely submersible to beyond 1m depth, so ideal for water features and undersoil cable extensions. Casings for wiring devices are manufactured from tough, impact and UVresistant polycarbonate, and all offer cable entry knockouts of 20mm. Double pole, 13A sockets come in single or two gang, with two gang RCD or wireless-controlled options available too. The wireless remotes – as with the companion switch boxes – operate on 2.4GHz with a range of 10 to 20m, depending on environmental conditions. Brand new two-way 20AX switches are also available as one-gang (standard and retractive) and two-gang. There is a choice of two fused spurs, either switched or unswitched and the collection is completed by cable glands and enclosures in a choice of sizes up to 184 x 274 x 135mm.

COST CONTROL Steve Marr, Product and Marketing Director at CP Electronics explains how wholesalers can help their clients add value to their projects by considering how they can lower costs and maximise profits with flexible lighting controls.

W

hen looking at a new lighting scheme, operators of industrial premises have to look at ways of achieving efficient building operation through lower operating costs, reduced maintenance and downtime and a better work environment with improved safety. Whilst there are a number of ways managers and owners of warehouses can reduce their spend in terms of energy and costs, the quickest and most effective solution is to look at lighting control for a flexible solution that meets the different needs of industrial facilities, with adaptable systems that can easily be reconfigured. With the correct lighting control, not only will the installation costs be minimised but savings will be effective immediately – a fact which is difficult to overlook for any company.

Because of the type of environment, particular care needs to be taken when positioning and selecting control devices due to ambient temperature and how this may affect their operation and range. The number and positioning of devices is also crucial to ensure that there are no blind spots and that fork-lift trucks, lifting devices etc. can be detected by the control system as and when required.

Choose wisely One of the main considerations when implementing a lighting controls solution is the correct selection of the control device and this is where the wholesaler can become invaluable in terms of advice. Help with the selection of controls is advisable as this ensures compatibility with the selected product.

22 SEPTEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Occupancy detectors can use different technologies such as PIR or microwave that offer different benefits in different environments. Typically, warehouses are on a large scale, and so may benefit from higher spec, longer range detectors compared to other environments where a smaller zoned approach may be more beneficial. Either way occupancy sensors ensure lighting is only on when required, ensuring that these vast spaces are no longer illuminated around the clock unnecessarily. How and when? The next step is to understand how and when the warehouse is in operation. For example, a 24-hour warehouse which is constantly occupied would benefit from some form of daylight control, which either switches the lights off or dims them down as ambient light increases. A warehouse that has occasional picking of items from aisles would achieve maximum energy savings by utilising some form of occupancy control on the lighting. Where a warehouse has several different shift patterns with different lighting requirements, a wired networked solution could be advantageous. There are of course numerous additional factors which must be

LIGHTING

considered, such as the need for minimum levels of light for comfort or safety reasons. So particularly in the industrial environment, considerable benefits can be gained by using different lenses that separately optimise for the detection and presence, and detection of light; which leads to more precise control and enhanced comfort and energy savings. Facilitating commissioning of the detector is also challenging with industrial mounting heights of maybe 15m or 20m. Infrared communication enables simple direct communication with detectors, but again a lens designed for optimal presence detection will typically be detrimental when using infrared to communicate with the commissioning tool, and so good product design should aim to optimise all aspects. Make it easy Perhaps the most important issue, however, is ease of use, almost negating any need for end-user intervention. One

installations. The great thing about industrial spaces like warehouses and factories is that as they are open, wireless signal transmission is often excellent, without obvious obstacles like walls. Wireless communications is also beneficial as most warehouse and industrial installations will be at height, so there is no disruption from needing to pull new cables.

method is to follow the path set by offices using automated lighting and intelligent lighting controls. Intelligent controls can be easily and rapidly installed, recommissioned and adapted to changes with minimal disruption which is extremely important in a space that may well be in constant use. The obvious benefit of wireless controls is that the existing power cabling to the luminaires need not be altered, and no additional control cabling is required which is ideal for retro-fit

Complete offering A fully networked system can offer even greater flexibility and energy savings potential. Networking can introduce the ability to monitor and analyse the lighting controls, offering owners the opportunity to optimise maintenance programs and even be alerted to faults or even safety critical emergency lighting issues. TOOLS

ON TREND Knipex UK Marketing Manager, David Barnes, speaks to PEW about the hand tools market for electricians and the launch of its new products for 2020.

I

t would be easy to think that pliers have not changed all that much over the years. However, innovations and new features are designed and incorporated into hand tools on a regular basis to save time and effort for electricians. Manufacturers, such as Knipex, are moving towards more compact tools and multiple features on one tool. Those trends are reflected in our new products for 2020. Take the Cobra XS, for example, the smallest water pump pliers in the world with full functional capability, measuring just 100mm long. The tool can adapt to eleven adjustment positions and grip nuts up to 24mm in width. They also look great and tools like these are becoming more sought after as professionals look for improved ease of use and functionality.

Cable stripping Cable strippers are also being designed with more features, yet at the same time are becoming more user friendly. The PreciStrip16, for instance, quickly and precisely strips fine, flexible and solid cables, holding materials tightly in its semicircular, grooved holding clamps.

The pliers have a wide capacity range (which is easily adjusted) from 0.08 to 16mm2. The cable cutter on top of the PreciStrip16 reliably cuts flexible cables up to 16mm and solid conductors up to 6mm. Parabolic stripping blades separate insulation from both extremely fine-stranded and solid round cables, then automatically strip the insulation off backwards. You can expect a secure grip and an exact cut every time with the PreciStrip16. It has an adjustable length stop so accuracy is guaranteed time after time, even on repetitive jobs. When needed, the blade cassette can be easily replaced. The tool makes cable stripping easy as it has an ergonomic handle that is comfortable to use all day long. And it’s not easy to lose either! It comes with a description label that can be personalised, meaning no more mix-ups and no more lost tools.

Crimping Pliers We have also launched a chrome plated version of our bestselling, Self-Adjusting Crimping Pliers. With a narrow handle width and improved ergonomics the pliers are ideal for crimping wire end sleeves. The pliers self-adjust to the size of wire end sleeves required and are perfect for repetitive, high crimping quality due to its integral lock with a self-releasing mechanism. The tools have been calibrated accurately in Knipex’s Wuppertal factory and optimum transmission of force is ensured thanks to a toggle lever for fatigue-reduced operation. The new 300mm Pliers Wrench can now grip width across flats up to a diameter of

68mm (2 1/2") thanks to two additional adjustment positions. It rounds off the range of six pliers wrenches (125, 150, 180, 250, 300 and 400mm). For especially sensitive surfaces, KNIPEX now offers plastic jaw covers as accessories for the 180, 250, and 300mm variants. The protective jaws are easily attached by hand and snap into place to suit the geometry of the pliers' jaws so that they do not slip during work. The soft, smooth gripping surface ensures that holding, gripping and fixing designer fittings or extremely sensitive materials do not result in any damage. The 160mm CoBolt S with 25-fold amplification of manual force is now available with a recess on the cutting edge, so the popular compact bolt cutter can cut through round materials even more effectively. Bolts, rivets and nails with a diameter up to 4.4mm and particularly tough materials such as

Supporting wholesalers Our team is available to help wholesalers with product information and details on how to source the marketing materials and new products. Knipex provides eyecatching point of sale and marketing materials with solutions designed to help boost sales with glass display cases, illuminated boxes and accessories such as shelf stoppers, perforated panel hooks, secondary stands and displays. piano wire and spring steel with a diameter up to 3.3 mm can now be cut in a single movement thanks to the recess located close to the joint. TOOLS

POWER

IN YOUR HANDS

T

oday’s power tool users now expect reliable, enduring tools with extended warranties and performance levels saving valuable time, money, and energy. Manufacturers, such as HiKOKI, continue to produce innovations, designed to improve value and raise performance standards for trade customers. The most startling change has been in the cordless power tool market. 12 months ago, cordless tools represented over 50% of the demand for power tools. We believe this figure has already grown and will continue to grow. Our own sales figures show year-on-year increases on sales of certain tools, such as cordless circular saws versus their corded versions.

Nick Chan, Marketing Manager of HiKOKI Power Tools looks at the rise of cordless battery technology. You hold the power As a wholesaler it is important to know which power tools to hold in stock and cordless tools are an obvious choice. New battery technologies, combined with highly efficient brushless motors, are driving your customers to use cordless. Together they offer more power and durability than ever before, meaning their performance often matches that of their corded counterparts. Users feel cordless are superior to corded tools as they can take a cordless tool anywhere, are compact compared to their corded counterparts and, with no leads to trip on, are safer. We have found that the superior experiences for professional users come from being able to ‘get the job done anywhere’ by using tools that are powerful, durable, and accurate. It is also important to support professionals in their choice of power tool brand and we recently announced an automatic three year warranty on our 18V and 36V cordless tools. Not only that, HiKOKI users can now quickly and simply apply for the five year extended warranty,

26 SEPTEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

subject to terms and conditions. All this adds peace of mind and makes the move to cordless even more appealing.

Flexible battery power Cordless innovation will not stop for the foreseeable future, and we believe the percentage of tools carried by tradespeople will continue to be weighted towards cordless. For example, the HiKOKI Multi Volt BSL36A18 36V battery packs have more power than similar sized 18V battery packs – but dimensions and weight remain almost the same, so the 36V battery packs can be used with a wide range of 18V class devices. Using the UC18YSL3 charger, the 36V battery packs can be fully charged in just 32 minutes. In addition, the battery packs

026_PEW_SEPT20_Layout 1 20/08/2020 16:10 Page 27

TOOLS

have a particularly long service life: they can be charged up to 1,500 times without any appreciable impact on performance. The energy available in the battery pack is displayed on the battery itself through a four-stage charge indicator. It is this kind of speed, meaning installers will never run out of charge, which is driving our move into the cordless age. Intelligent connecting technology makes it possible for the battery pack to detect whether it is being used on an 18 Volt or a 36 Volt device and automatically adjusts the voltage. If we use the analogy of cars, both a 1L and 2L engine can do 70mph, but the 2L engine is using less of its capacity to get there, therefore increasing the fuel efficiency and engine life. Getting it right For a tradesperson, choosing a power tool can be based on a number of factors: power, batteries, comfort and cost play a part. However, part of the choice will also be determined by the heritage of the power tool company itself, and its reputation for engineering and innovation, consequently saving time and money for its power tool users. Quality When Hitachi Power Tools was sold to Asia’s largest private equity fund and rebranded to HiKOKI Power Tools, the company lost none of its Japanese engineering excellence and commitment to innovation developed over 70 years. Consequently, our range of tools continues to catch the attention of wholesaler customers. So, with cordless power tools matching the performance of their corded counterparts, bringing with it so many advantages and convenience when on-site, the choice of which tools to stock becomes simpler and full of opportunity for wholesalers. EDA INSIGHT An update from the Electrical Distributors’ Association

A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH You’re reading this because you probably already work in the UK’s electrotechnical sector, but have you stopped to think about what’s behind everything you sell? An electrical force can store and transfer heat, generate heat and act with materials to produce light, transmit and receive radio waves, and produce really useful radiation such as x-rays and microwaves.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

So, grab a cuppa and have a go at our quiz which we’ve sampled from the training module. Better still, ask your colleagues to have a go too. Check your answers below and if the results show that you need to boost your know-how, talk to the EDA today.

Q1: Solar energy, wind power, tidal and wave power Q2:: 20 mA (0.020 A) Q3: The supplier’s cut-out fuse and the electricity meter Q4: MCBs, RCDs or RCBOs Q5: The product may use up to 2,000W of power Q6: R = 18 Ω

Understanding more about how electricity works is confidence-building knowledge which could help you talk the same language as your customers. The EDA’s distance-learning training module ‘Introduction to the Principles of Electricity’ provides a solid foundation of knowledge upon which you can build. It’s one of 12 modules in the EDA’s Product Knowledge Programme.

Q1: Give three examples of renewable generation? Q2: Approximately what value of electrical current causes heart muscles to freeze and contract? Q3: What equipment might you find at the origin of an electrical installation? Q4: What types of protective device might be found in a modern consumer unit? Q5: A product has 2kW on its rating plate. What does this mean? Q6: When a 9V battery is used to power a light bulb, a current of 0.5 A flows through the bulb. What is the bulb’s resistance?

Professional know-how to drive sales Improving your team’s technical know-how through the EDA’s training could unlock additional revenue for your business.

SOAPBOX

IT’S TIME TO MAKE SMARTER BUILDINGS EASIER TO INSTALL Brett Smyth, General Manager of Ideal Industries EMEA, a specialist in electrical accessories, tools and equipment, discusses the need to signpost installers to products that make data installations faster and easier.

T

hose of us who remember the BBC TV programme, ‘Tomorrow’s World’ will recall how we regarded talk of smart homes as science fiction. That future is here now and, as the digital generation matures and becomes increasingly influential the way we build homes and operate workplaces, digitally-enabled buildings will be accepted as the norm. Just as there was a gap between innovations appearing on Tomorrow’s World and happening in real life back in the day, there remains a disconnect between what’s possible and what’s actually happening. While corporate offices and executive homes are moving towards smart tech, so far we’re only skimming the surface of our built environment’s digital potential. What that means for the electrical sector is lots of opportunity ahead in an increasingly complex data-enabled world. Connecting customers The electrical industry is used to changing technologies and compliance requirements, so most professionals are reasonably agile in their approach to embracing new tech. It’s not always easy for electrical contractors to keep up-to-date with the latest products, however, which is why the electrical wholesaler has such an important role to play. When it comes to data installations, field-terminations of CAT5e, CAT6 or CAT6A cables are amongst the most demanding elements of the project. Not only are terminations fiddly and time-consuming, but inconsistencies can lead to failures on the network and potential snagging delays and penalties.

Wholesalers have an opportunity to help installers avoid this scenario by improving quality and consistency and reducing time and labour costs with the use of Ideal Industries’ innovative FT-45 Feed-Thru Modular Plugs and Crimp Tool. Faster, simpler Data cable terminations are carried out using RJ45 modular plugs. The more complex the network, the more RJ45 assemblies and terminations needed. Conventional installation methods require conductors to be trimmed to an exact length before the plug is placed onto the cable. If the conductors are too short, circuits will remain open, if they’re too long, there is a risk that the pairs could be left exposed outside of the plug body or cable jacket. In this scenario, the conductors can also move out of place – an issue that is likely to remain unnoticed until the cables are tested. IDEAL Industries’ FT-45 Feed-Thru modular plugs and crimp tool have been designed to completely re-think the traditional RJ45 assembly and crimping process, allowing installers to speed up and simplify the termination of RJ45 plugs by eliminating the need to trim conductors to a precise length before

inserting the cable into the plug. The Feed-Thru Modular Plugs are single-piece connectors, so there is no need for installers to assemble a three-piece connector. They don’t have to trim conductor wires to a specific length either, instead they simply remove an appropriate section of jacket, remove the centre spline (if present), untwist the pairs into the right order, and trim the ends flat. The cable can then be slid into the connector until seated. The open-ended feed through plug includes three-pin contacts with 50µ gold-plated contact areas, improving wire stability to every wire, ensuring more conductive contact points for a more resilient data network. Ideal’s versatile FT-45 Crimp Tool further enhances the right-first-time consistency of this approach. It has a single crimp cavity for RJ-45/8-position connectors, so installers can crimp Ideal Feed-Thru standard, shielded, and unshielded connectors for CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6A cables by simply squeezing the handle to the closed position to cleanly shear the excess conductor wires, leaving a smooth, flat finish in a single action. Seizing the opportunity Every small step forward in technology presents an opportunity for wholesalers to up-sell and build relationships by offering electrical new innovations to electrical professionals. The FT-45 data termination range is just one example. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
