“BUILD, BUILD,BUILD!”
T
he above are the fabled words of our dear leader from the most recent Prime Minister’s Questions, at the time of writing this. Words that hopefully inspire confidence for many working in the construction industry, us included, should you believe them. It certainly seems like there is a renewed focus on construction with a £5 billion investment for UK infrastructure promised in the same week. Following on from my previous viewpoint, I wanted to stick with an optimistic outlook at what the next few months may hold, however, the truth is nobody knows. You may hear that we are on the verge of (more) catastrophic job losses, redundancies and that the economy is in big, big trouble. Where there may be some undeniable truth in this dreary prediction of the future (6,000 jobs in retail alone were lost in a single day at the start of July) there is also plenty to be hopeful about. “How dare you disturb my image of a dystopian nightmare where all is wrong with the world!” I hear (some of you) scream. I’m afraid I am going to interrupt your doom and gloom to bring you the positive news. Now, some of you may not believe everything that comes out of our head of government’s mouth, although I have no idea what could have possibly brought you to that conclusion. Hopefully these won’t be empty words, a thinly-veiled attempt at saying whatever he thinks will boost those all-important ratings by providing meaningless soundbites. A strong argument to suggest that the government is intent on boosting building in the coming months and beyond is that in early June, the Government announced that Trade Credit Insurance will receive up to £10 billion of government guarantees. This Trade Credit Reinsurance Scheme, which has been agreed following extensive discussions with the insurance sector, will see the majority of TCI coverage maintained across the UK. This was met with approval from the Electrical Distributors’ Association whose Board Member and Managing Director of LEW Electrical, Andy Johnson, will be joining CLC’s Insurance and Surety Working Group to offer a wholesaler perspective on the deal. To learn more about that appointment and further details, turn to page 6. This announcement provides substance and some evidence that the Government will stick to its word and support the construction industry. Having these safety nets to fall on, along with the extension of the furlough scheme, could provide the industry with the much needed backing it requires. At a more local level, the EDA has reported that many wholesalers have been able to successfully apply for business rate relief on their premises, more evidence that the construction industry is not being forgotten about at all ends of the supply chain. To get up to date and accurate information regarding the latest news surrounding Corona Virus, visit the EDA Covid-19 bulletins page at: www.rdr.link/wr001. Again, at the time of writing this, it is the eve of the so called “Super Saturday” where the opening of pubs, bars and restaurants in England are being eagerly awaited. Should all go to plan, this should see the further, phased unlocking of the country as we begin to return to some semblance of normality. I still strongly believe that the wholesalers and merchants will play a vital role in boosting the economy by providing a crucial service in rebuilding this country. Hopefully we will see the death rates continue to fall and get businesses back on track. Here’s hoping, anyway. Have a great few months and enjoy the issue.

NEWS & VIEWS Government backs tci coverage
EDA MEMBER JOINS CLC GROUP Andy Johnson has joined CLC’s Insurance and Surety Working Group to provide electrical wholesaler perspective in defining the Government’s £10 billion Trade Credit Reinsurance Guarantee. For many companies in the electrotechnical sector, Trade Credit Insurance (TCI) is an essential ingredient in their dealings with suppliers. It gives much-needed confidence to enter into contracts. But due to COVID-19 and increasing cashflow difficulties, businesses have faced the risk of having credit insurance withdrawn, or premiums increasing to unaffordable levels. In early June, the Government announced that Trade Credit Insurance will receive up to £10 billion of government guarantees. This Trade Credit Reinsurance
Scheme, which has been agreed following extensive discussions with the insurance sector, will see the majority of TCI coverage maintained across the UK. The EDA welcomes the Scheme and is delighted that EDA Board Member and MD of LEW Electrical Distributors, Andy Johnson, has joined the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) Insurance and Surety Working Group, that will help to shape the package to shore up the TCI sector. The Working Group has issued a new guidance document for businesses, which is available to download via the EDA’s COVID-19 Hub, at: www.rdr.link/wr002.
“Many construction and maintenance supply chain businesses, including electrical wholesalers, builder’s merchants, manufacturers and suppliers, use TCI” explains Andy. “It gives them the confidence to trade with one another, providing protection when customers do not pay their debts owed for products or services. “This new guidance aims to provide practical advice and considerations for discussions with brokers and insurers when seeking TCI. It also provides an outline of the TCI Reinsurance Scheme between government and insurers.”
SCHNEIDER PARTNERS WITH EIC Schneider Electric has launched a fundraising campaign to support Electricians across the UK through the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC). In partnership with Tomorrow Rising Fund, a global initiative to support emergency response and restarting activities post-Covid-19, Schneider Electric will be raising money through ‘80 Days Around the World’ challenges during the lockdown period, to encourage their teams working from home to keep active for a good cause. Groups of employees will aim to cumulatively take the 50 million steps it would take to circumnavigate the world.
As part of the Tomorrow Rising Fund, Schneider Electric has committed to match 50% of any donations made, whilst also donating an immediate €5,000 to the EIC. All money raised will go to the Electrical Industries Charity. In the first six months of the year, the EIC helped roughly 3,000 people in mental distress – it is expecting that number to triple in the next six months. The funds raised will go towards providing therapy sessions and psychiatrist assessments to those in the electrical industry who are struggling with their mental health during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis.
“We’re extremely proud to be part of the UK’s electrical community. This period of uncertainty has been challenging for our industry as a whole, and we want to help those most in need.” Says Nico van der Merwe, UK&I Home & Distribution Vice President at Schneider Electric.

infrastructure investment welcomed
GOVERNMENT BUILD MESSAGE REASSURES EDA Boris Johnson announced his additional £5bn infrastructure investment to help the UK “build, build, build” its way out of the pandemic crisis earlier this month. Commenting on the PM’s announcement, EDA President, CEF’s Chris Ashworth, says: “This investment commitment is reassuring news for the UK’s electro-technical sector and the many businesses and livelihoods it represents. Government spending will drive demand for electrical installations in domestic, commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects. Electrical contractors can rest assured that the wholesale sector is ready to step forward and continue to provide excellent and up to date product knowledge they can depend on.”
LEW EXPANDS LEW Electrical Distributors has opened a brand new branch in Leicester, making it the 13th branch for one of the UK’s leading independent electrical wholesalers. Opened in June on the new Blaby Business Park south of the city, the new Leicester branch serves the city and the wider regions close by from a brand new purpose fit trade counter and warehouse. The branch is being led by Alastair Stewart who has spent the past 12 months building the branch base as well as gaining practical experience in how LEW delivers service across the branches. Alastair comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge and is keen to grow the branch, establishing LEW within the area. Supporting Alastair is newly promoted, Group Manager Dean Wilsher, who is developing from his current position as Branch Manager in Sheffield. Adjoining the trade counter is a warehouse stocked with a diverse stock range of products. Alastair has worked with the central team to stock the branch with all the expected essentials as well as new exciting products for the local demand. LEW Leicester also benefits from access to LEW’s wider £4m stock portfolio with connection to the overnight internal Link Van, allowing for next day delivery from one branch to another to ensure the best value and service for customers. The Leicester branch has opened during a challenging time for the industry and wider community. However, LEW has risen to the challenge and worked hard to develop a COVID-secure service across all branches including Leicester.
Customers are able to Call & Collect any orders for contact-free collection or pop into the newly adapted branches, designed to ensure a safe social distanced service for the protection of customers and staff. The new branch is part of exciting growth plans for LEW, it follows another branch opening in Warrington and expansions in Barnsley & Lincoln. Behind the trade counter, growth continues with the introduction of a new ERP system across all aspects of the business. Custom designed for LEW, the new software will allow for total integration across all sales platforms resulting in a more seamless and efficient service for customers.

I’LL DRINK TO THAT With pubs and bars forced to close their doors as COVID-19 struck, it’s been a tough few months. With lockdown easing, it’s essential that these businesses make their property COVID-secure to help protect both customers and employees. Jenny Smith, Head of Marketing at Vent-Axia explains how ventilation plays a vital part in achieving this and the opportunities this affords electrical wholesalers.
P
ubs and restaurants were some of the first establishments to close due to COVID-19, but with the Prime Minster announcing an easing of lockdown with pubs opening on 4th July, many have been, and still will be, working hard to make their premises COVID-secure. In ‘Keeping workers and customers safe during COVID-19 in restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaway services’ guidance, published
on 24th June, the document states that steps that will usually be needed before reopening include: “Checking whether you need to service or adjust ventilation systems, for example so that they do not automatically reduce ventilation levels due to lower than normal occupancy levels.” This guidance is designed to ensure time spent in pubs, bars and restaurants is as safe as possible for staff and customers, and is a clear demonstration of how vital
effective ventilation is. Ensuring ventilation works effectively and does not underventilate is critical to reduce airborne transmission of COVID-19. Different enemy, same solution So, with an invisible enemy threatening custom in pubs what steps can landlords take? Luckily most pubs will already have some form of ventilation installed. Before the 2007 smoking ban, pubs had to ensure effective ventilation to avoid resembling the Great Smog of London. But after the ban, fans in pubs were no longer needed to extract harmful smoke. Some fans have been upgraded since 2007 but many are now old and outdated and unable to provide good ventilation. Therefore, it is essential pubs evaluate their ventilation to ensure it is up to the essential task it must now carry out. Wholesale help With pub ventilation vital in the fight against COVID-19, wholesalers need to ensure they

have stock available to meet the new demand. Wholesalers should look to stock robust and reliable fans that offer good airflow, energy efficiency and low noise levels. Ease of installation and replacement is another important feature, since this saves time on site and so reduces costs. Electricians will want to reassure publicans that upgrading ventilation is not a big job, and so by providing them with the right product, wholesalers really help out. Should older fans need replacing, likefor-like refitting takes less than five minutes making it the most time, and therefore cost-efficient, recommissioning strategy for an existing install. A major selling point for wholesalers. Playing your part With ventilation one of the most important factors when it comes to mitigating the risk of COVID-19 transmission inside, it is vital to improve airflow in pubs, and landlords need advice and guidance from the ventilation sector on how best to do this in
their individual property. Electrical Wholesalers are at the heart of this, providing advice on the right products for installers to carry out this essential task. Many of us want it to be safe enough to go for a pint again and clearing the air and extracting the virus is sure to help us to do this more safely. Helping hand Vent-Axia is encouraging pubs to become a COVID-Aware Establishment by checking they are adequately ventilated according to government guidelines. Vent-Axia is also issuing a free COVID-AWARE window sticker with every T-Series fan purchase to help reassure customers entering pubs. Vent-Axia’s technical Support Team is available for advice on 0844 856 0590 or visit: www.rdr.link/wr004. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Product Focus: Today it is simple to replace traditional fans with modern alternatives that will reliably supply effective ventilation. For example, VentAxia’s Lo-Carbon T-Series Fan range Lo-Carbon T-Series can simply replace Window Model traditional commercial extract/supply fans with a low carbon alternative as it’s compatible with existing fan sizes allowing for easy replacement. Available in 6, 7, 9 and 12 inch options, the range includes wall, window, roof, panel, and inline variants, as well as variable fixings to help with different window and wall thicknesses, making installation simple. With the TSeries being the UK’s favourite commercial fan, there are a lot of them out there.

NEW TO LUBE? Brett Smyth, General Manager of Ideal Industries EMEA, manufacturer of electrical accessories, tools and equipment, discusses the opportunity to sell lube as an add-on to conduit sales.
B
est practice in the UK electrical installation sector puts us ahead of many other markets in terms of safety and quality. Traditionally, however, UK installers have been slow to adopt the use of conduit, particularly in residential installations, despite the fact that it is widely used in other countries, especially the USA and the Middle East. Things are changing here too, this creates an opportunity for electrical wholesalers to sell lube as an ‘add-on’ product when customers purchase conduit.
Why is lube necessary? Regardless of the type of installation, cabling is vulnerable to damage as it is pulled through the conduit, unless a suitable lubricant is used. When installing cables in conduit, therefore, lube is an essential part of any electrician’s toolkit. And, just like every other tool or component used on an installation, the quality of the lube chosen can affect speed and ease of installation, safety and long-term performance. The main purpose of an electrical lube is to help the cable slide easily through the conduit to avoid friction and snagging. Often conduit is congested with multiple cables, it may be extended in length and include awkward bends and angles, all of which are potential causes of friction and difficulty in pulling the cable. Use of a suitable lubricant makes pulling the cable easier for the electrician with a lower risk of damage to the cable during installation. It’s not unusual for electricians to improvise by using non-specialist products, such as washing-up liquid for example, to provide the slippyness of a lubricant. However, it’s important to point out that products like this are not designed to reduce friction and snagging and have not been tested for use with electrical cables; only a specialist lubricant can provide the verified protection and compatibility required.
The right lube The most fundamental property of any electrical lubricant is that it must be benign when in contact with the jacket material of the cable, so that it not only protects the cable from friction or snagging but also prevents any loss of integrity for the jacket that protects the wire. As a wide range of jacket materials are used in cable manufacture, checking that the chosen lubricant is certified for use on the specific cable being installed is essential. All Ideal Industries lubricants have been independently tested to IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), CE & UL standards and are clearly labelled to enable electricians to verify compatibility. They are also pH neutral, environmentallysafe, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-corrosive – all properties that ensure the installation is safe and avoid any long-
term damage to the cable or the conduit from the lubricant. The “clingability” of the lubricant is also essential, as this determines how well it performs throughout the pull. This is particularly important for longer and more complex runs. For example, Ideal Industries’ Yellow 77 Lube, which is most commonly used for industrial and commercial installations, has enhanced clingability to provide improved performance in tougher environments. Ideal Yellow 77 also has the lowest coefficient of friction of any lubricant in the Ideal Industries lube range, which is another key indicator of performance. The lower the co-efficient of friction, the more protected the cable will be, so electricians installing cables in extended conduit networks should select the lowest coefficient of friction available.

The right climate Temperature stability is also important because performance of the lube could be affected if it is installed outside the recommended temperature range. For Ideal Yellow 77, which is often used for industrial and power sector installations, the temperature range is 0˚C - 54˚C, providing sufficient variability for most UK installations. For Ideal Industries Aqua-Gel lubes, a polymer-based lube alternative to wax for exterior installations, the temperature range is even greater at -2˚C - 88˚C. The temperature range for Ideal Industries’ Clearglide lube, which is usually recommended for residential, office, data comms and retrofit installations, is 0˚C 82˚C. For these environments, ease of application and clean-up are also important considerations to prevent damage to interior finishes. The Clearglide bottle is designed to allow the lubricant to be dispensed straight into the conduit to

prevent spills and the product has been formulated with added perfume to prevent chemical odours in interior spaces. Quality counts When it comes to selecting a lubricant, quality counts, so offering conduit customers the right lube for their project is a way to add value to the customer relationship, as well as maximising the sales opportunity. HEALTHCARE HELPING HAND Marie Parry, Group Marketing Director, Scolmore Group, looks at some of the issues surrounding the supply of electrical products to the healthcare sector.
I
nfection control is one of the biggest challenges facing the healthcare sector. Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are infections that occur in a healthcare setting that a patient didn't have before they came in. These infections can develop either as a direct result of healthcare intervention (such as medical or surgical treatment) or from being in contact with a healthcare setting. They arise across a wide range of clinical conditions and can affect people of all ages. They can exacerbate existing or underlying conditions, delay recovery and adversely affect quality of life. A number of factors can increase the risk of acquiring an infection, but high standards of infection prevention and control practice, including providing clean environments, can minimise the risk.
How to keep safe The question for our industry is what are the issues and requirements surrounding

the supply and installation of electrical equipment? Anyone operating within and supplying to this sector, is required to work with products that meet the demands for hygiene and safety, and that includes electrical products. Switch plates, such as light switches, dimmers and sockets have one of the highest touch rates in any environment, so are likely to hold a significant number of microbes on their surfaces. Whilst regular and rigorous cleaning of these settings is essential, the use of products with antimicrobial properties will also have a part to play to help inhibit the spread of infection.
Specification requirements When it comes to specification requirements within the healthcare sector, most are taken from Health Technical Memorandum (HTM’s). These give comprehensive advice and guidance on the design, installation and operation of specialised building and engineering technology used in the delivery of healthcare. The focus of Health Technical Memorandum guidance remains on healthcare-specific elements of standards, policies and up-to-date established best practice. They are applicable to new and existing sites, and are for use at various stages during the whole building lifecycle. Healthcare-specific technical engineering guidance is a vital tool in the safe and efficient operation of healthcare facilities. Health Technical Memorandum guidance is the main source of specific healthcare-related guidance for estates and facilities professionals. For contractors and installers working within a healthcare setting, they will seek the reassurance from manufacturers that the products they are specifying and installing meet the required standards and that they are able to supply the test certificates to prove it. Steve Birch, Sales Director at Vogue (UK), talks to PEW about the latest trends in the heating industry and why you need to be working with a manufacturer that can adapt to changing consumer wants and needs.
H
eating design and specification has become an integral part of the whole-house interior design package, with a growing desire for tailor made heating solutions that are high-quality, design led and creatively functional. In fact, the evolution of todays heated towel warmer stretches way back to the 1800’s when in 1834, a man named Denison Olmstead
created a heat exchanger for his stove and then in 1855, Franz San Galli, of St. Petersburg, invented the heated radiator. So the journey began, the radiator became more popular and spread to every room in the home. Once heating reached the bathroom it became unrealistic for towels to dry and pile-up on the radiator and so, the inevitable arrival of the towel warmer came to pass.
Heating history The 1920’s saw the first of the cast iron water heated towel warmers, commonly referred to as a ‘bath radiator’. Here in the UK, drying racks, heated towel warmers and heated towel bars were seen as luxury items and would only ever be found in homes and hotels of high upstanding social status. As time passed, new materials became available and our abilities to manipulate and manufacture these materials grew and materials like copper, brass, mild steel and stainless steel helped to propel the industry forward. With a rise in property ownership in the 20th century and a huge public appetite for renovation, home comforts became increasingly important and the today the heating industry has been transformed beyond recognition. Practicality, convenience and sustainability are 21st

century must-haves as changing consumer demand and continuous product innovation combine to personalise and enhance every room of the house. Style Heating requires the same level of attention as the rest of the décor, as homeowners become ever more discerning. Products which offer a lower carbon footprint and efficiency are set to rise in importance, as contractors and end users look to make choices based on climate change as well as available budgets, so offering an extensive range of up-to-the-minute heating options has never been more important. Feature radiators and towel warmers have become a necessary bathroom component considered central to a design and interior scheme. In fact, transitional home products continue to grow in popularity as the market demands timeless designs, which ride the line between contemporary and traditional design and are no longer defined by a particular era. From stylised tubing and rails to opposing finishes and combination models, style trends in 2020 encourage consumers to make their own rules when it comes to multi-layered heating design and opt for a blend of contrasting styles and finishes. Current trends Tone and texture has also changed, with cutting-edge heating design inspiring new variations in texture, colour and finish. This will again play a huge part in tactile home interiors going forwards, especially given the rise in working from home. Heating solutions are a great way to introduce colour and tone, and innovative surface treatments, and hand-finishing techniques are paving the way for special finish options never before seen on a radiator or towel warmer. 2020 products deliver a new level of tactility in the bathroom and a sensory heating solution that delivers on both form and function. In terms of colour palette, the bathroom market continues to favour black coloured hardware and fixtures and fittings. Buyers’ preferences indicate that the monochromatic shades of white, grey and

he company's infrared heaters are developed to completely heat an outdoor area and encourage diners to eat outside whatever the weather, and with visitor numbers likely to soar as lockdown restrictions ease, venues need to ensure they are ready and compliant.
Climate changes Smaller heaters, although powerful, are not able to produce enough heat to warm a large outdoor seating area, and with social distancing now a priority, they will not be able to provide a professional and effective heating solution. Tansun’s range of infrared heaters is designed to enable outdoor areas to become an extension of an indoor
Company Focus: All of Tansun’s products are made in the UK and are designed using premium components. The company has been established for 35 years and pioneered the concept of infrared electric heaters alongside Philips technology. Tansun has the largest range of commercial, domestic and industrial infrared heaters in the world, providing maintenance-free, safe and healthy shortwave heaters for many different types of heating applications.
Infrared heating manufacturer Tansun is helping businesses in the hospitality sector get back on their feet, following a disruptive few months, by supporting them in transforming their outdoor spaces. area and also provides extra revenue for the bar or restaurant, something that is very important in the current climate. When an outdoor area is equipped with adequate heat coverage, Tansun has found that customers prefer to sit outdoors when dining out, yet more than 90% of outside areas are not heated effectively. This results in the spaces not only being unused but also means a wasted investment for bars and restaurants, something they can no longer afford to ignore. Adaptability June 1st saw the introduction of guidance for businesses with outdoor seating, allowing gradual reopening of venues across the UK. A welcome relief for the hospitality industry, outdoor seating will now be essential to keep businesses going, and with experts saying that being outdoors is less problematic in terms of the pandemic, venues need to review their current set ups sooner rather than later. As stated by the Environment Secretary George Eustice, the hospitality industry will face many challenges as it begins to reopen, and will very much rely on its

outdoor spaces to be able to trade safely. With this in mind, installing the correct heating will mean that people will be happy to stay outdoors for longer periods and into the evenings as a drop in temperature won’t be an issue. Tansun solution Tansun offers a selection of energy-saving switches and heater controls designed to suit almost any situation or need. Tansun's wide range of infrared heaters can easily be adjusted in heat output and energy consumption, maximising user comfort and energy savings. The Tansun six-channel remote allows six individual heaters/zones to be variably controlled. The remote can be configured to the receivers at the touch of a button, making it one of the most userfriendly controlled and efficient heating systems on the market.

Radi8 Industries, a brand of Bri-Tek technologies, talks to PEW about its latest heating innovations designed to keep people warm at home, both indoors and outside.

ith the UK coming slowly out of lockdown over the coming months, Radi8 industries wants to ensure that people who aren’t quite ready to get back to the pubs, restaurants and the like maximise their usage of indoor and outdoor seating areas. As we all know, British weather can be incredibly temperamental, this means that unfortunately, many conservatories go left unused even in the summer as they are simply too cold to sit in. Likewise, outdoor areas such as patios are infrequently utilised by homeowners when the temperature isn’t high enough. During these uncertain times, homeowners are eager to utilise all areas of the home to avoid feeling cooped-up indoors. Radi8 Industries has a solution to provide heat to indoor and outdoor seating areas: InfraRed Linear Slim Heaters.
Effective heating The Infrared Linear Slim Heaters from Radi8 are suitable for both internal and external use, thanks to the IP44 rating. Therefore, they may be utilised in patios and conservatories all year round to provide warmth, regardless of the weather. The InfraRed technology works by providing directional heating, so they are more effective at heating both objects and people. In comparison to conventional heating, which heats the air, the InfraRed heating panels reduce wasted electricity and produce benefits immediately. The InfraRed technology can cover large areas which conventional heaters cannot and they produce large amounts of heat. Another added benefit for allergy sufferers is that they reduce the spread of dust and particles, so they are better for your health than convection heaters. With regards to efficiency, they can help users save up to 80% on their energy bills thanks to the directional heating. Furthermore, these heaters have great green credentials and can help reduce the carbon footprint left on the environment.

Style and substance The Linear InfraRed heaters are slim in design, so they can blend into indoor or outdoor seating areas. The InfraRed heaters are available in a variety of sizes and wattages (ranging from 1,200W to 3,000W), allowing flexibility of usage according to space and environment. Radi8 Linear Heaters are very easy to install as they can be easily mounted onto the wall with the integrated brackets to produce a comfortable, natural radiant heat. The Linear series is extremely versatile as they can be adjusted remotely through the integrated LED temperature display and remote control. Therefore, users can easily adjust to their ideal level of heat. Alternatively, the panels may be connected directly to a central thermostat and controlled by Wi-Fi. All of the panels come with a guaranteed five year warranty. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

WHY SPECULATE? The number of specifications listed for a thermal camera can be overwhelming when you’re trying to help a customer select the right camera for their needs. Any spec in isolation won’t tell you much about the camera, instead it’s a combination of factors that determine a thermal imager’s capabilities. Here FLIR looks at the information you need to know.
A
ll specs provide useful information, but here are the main ones you need to consider to ensure you’re offering the right advice for the application: Range Range is the entire span of temperatures the camera is calibrated to and capable of measuring. Some cameras have multiple ranges in order to more accurately measure a wider span of temperatures. Ask the customer the temperatures they’re likely to encounter in their application – selecting a camera with a higher temperature range is especially important for certain industrial applications, such as measuring high-temperature equipment like boilers, kilns, or furnaces.
TOP TIP: Applications like measuring the temperature of kilns require a camera with a high temperature range. When a camera is out of range, an * by the temperature indicates that the camera is guessing the temperature. Field of View (FOV) Field of View is determined by the camera lens, and is the extent of a scene that the camera will see at any given moment.
For work being done close-up, you should recommend a lens with a wide angle FOV (10mm or higher). For long distance work, suggest a telephoto lens (29mm). Some cameras may be available with multiple lenses for different applications.
TOP TIP: FOV determines how much the camera sees and from what distance. A telephoto lens is better for measuring at a distance, while a wide angle lens is better for close-up work. IR Resolution The resolution of the camera is how many pixels the camera has on the scene. Higher resolution means that each image contains
22 SUMMER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
more information: more pixels, more detail, and a greater likelihood of getting an accurate measurement. Depending on the application, especially when the user can get close to the target, they may be able to get away with a lower-cost, lowerresolution camera. Measuring smaller targets from further away will require a higher resolution.
TOP TIP: Low-resolution cameras are better suited to measuring targets at a close distance. A high-resolution camera is required for measuring at a distance. Thermal Sensitivity (NETD) Thermal sensitivity or Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD) describes the smallest temperature difference you can see with the camera. The lower the number, the better the thermal sensitivity of the infrared system.
022_PEW_SUMMER20_Layout 1 12/07/2020 20:04 Page 23
A word of warning: cameras from lowcost manufacturers may be hiding poor sensitivity by taking NETD at 50°C instead of the industry standard 30°C. If the targets your customer needs to measure typically have wide temperature differences, a camera with a low NETD probably isn’t necessary. However, for more subtle applications, like detecting moisture issues, more sensitivity is needed. Focus Cameras may be fixed focus, others may have manual focus where the user adjusts the focus on the camera, or automatic focus, meaning the camera will autofocus based on what it can see for contrast on the scene. In general, more entry level cameras will have fixed focus, and high-performance cameras will have either manual or automatic focus. The advantage of manual vs automatic focus comes down to user need. Spectral range Spectral range is the range of wavelengths that the sensor in the camera detects, measured in micrometres (μm). Most gas detection cameras (such as propane, methane, and butane detectors) are midwave cameras, so they have a spectral range of 2μm to 5μm. Almost all other thermal cameras are longwave and have a spectral range of 8μm to 14μm. Longwave cameras are appropriate for most other applications, from electrical inspections to firefighting. Midwave cameras are used to detect gases like propane, methane, and butane, while longwave cameras are used for most other applications. Don’t speculate Keep these important specs in mind when determining which thermal imaging camera is the best for your customers’ needs. Remember, looking at just one spec value won’t give you a good indication of a thermal camera’s capabilities. If you need a place to start, check out the FLIR Exxseries for a good general purpose handheld camera. For long distance electrical or utility work, take a look at the FLIR T-series, and for close up work or for an entry-level choice, consider a lower-cost camera like the FLIR ONE Pro or FLIR C3. MORE POWER TO YOU Power Quality from an electrical supply to an installation has to adhere to a variety of minimum standards. Here, Power Quality Expert explains what Power Quality is and how you can provide safe and accurate testing equipment for your customers.
T
he latest 18th Edition wiring regulations were published in July 2018 with an appendix focused on Power Quality and Energy in the design, installation and testing of electrical installations. This provides the wholesaler the means to not only help to source and supply the latest energy efficient products to their customers, but they also now have the opportunity to help provide solutions for Power Quality monitoring and energy measurements as well.
Watt is Power Quality? Power Quality looks at a variety of measurements to see how good the electrical supply to an installation is and how well the consumer and their equipment are using that power. Power Quality also considers if the usage of this power could be causing any additional electrical problems in the installation.
At a basic level we are only looking at two measurements, voltage and current. However, modern power quality analysers are able to derive more information from calculations based on the values being monitored. Watt is the Power? Power is presented by three different measurements. Harmonics are calculated based on fundamental frequency of the electrical supply Power Quality Expert measure the total amount of power supplied to the Watt is the Quality? installation as Apparent Power (VA), the The Quality part of the measurements amount of power that is actually used to refers to the electrical harmonics of both operate the load as Active Power (W) and the voltage and current. Harmonics are the power that has been supplied but is calculated based on the fundamental not being used effectively in the frequency of the electrical supply, which in installation as Reactive Power (VAR). The the UK is 50Hz, and they are commonly relationship between VA and W is referred referred to by the multiplication factor used to as Power Factor (PF) and is expressed in their calculation. For example, the third as a value between 0 and 1. Perfect power harmonic has a frequency of 150Hz which factor is called unity and is shown as ‘1’. is calculated from 50Hz x 3.

To get an overall indication of the level of harmonics on a system we can look at the measurement of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The voltage THD can be referenced against EN50160. This is the standard which defines the quality of the voltage supply the Network Operator has to provide to their customer. With current we are more interested in individual harmonics such as the 3rd, 5th, 7th up to the 15th (750hz) when looking for indications of electrical problems. Harmonics which are multiples of the 3rd harmonic, referred to as ‘triplens’, are of interest as their currents can return back down the neutral, leading to issues with overheating of cables and transformers. Power Quality Analysers When looking to hire or sell a modern Power Quality Analyser to a customer, it is important to check if the meter is certified to the latest Power Quality measurements and methods standard IEC 61000-4-30, now in its 3rd edition. Meters that comply are identified as either an S or A accuracy class. Class S meters are suitable for working on the majority of power quality applications. Class A are the more accurate and are used for more advanced surveys. By ensuring meters comply to IEC61000-430, you can be sure of getting consistent measurements even if different models of analysers are hired over the course of a contract. Loggers that do not comply to

either S or A are normally used for basic surveys such as current and load profiling.
Loggers must be certified to latest Power Quality measurements.
Power Quality Reports Once the measurements have been recorded, the information needs to be analysed. The Power Quality Health Check portal is available to upload the data directly to us where a report can be viewed online, downloaded as a PDF or shared via a unique link to the customer. The service is compatible with all the main manufacturers such as Sonel, Fluke
and Kewtech. Results are presented in a standard report with analysis of important data shown in a clear ‘traffic light’ format to help the contractor engage with their client. Comments and recommendations are made on solutions for common Power Quality issues such as over voltage, unbalanced loading, harmonics and poor Power Factor. Power Quality Surveys Electrical wholesalers can also offer the complete service by having Power Quality Expert perform a survey for the contractor. We will attend the site with the customer, where we will install and setup the Power Quality Analyser to record all the necessary measurements over a one week period. Once the survey is complete the meter will be uninstalled and collected for us to download the results. A power Quality health check report is produced for the contractor to present to their client, with additional support and help provided for any additional questions there may be. TRAINING DAYS
W
hen every business owner is anxious about how to get back on track and how long recovery is going to take, having the right mix of talent without increasing the financial burden is key. If your business could access training for your team that was 95% government funded, offered you a choice of hundreds of qualifications from beginners to post-graduate, was suitable for every age group and seniority, you’d probably say: “tell me more”. This training already exists but you may have overlooked it because of myths and misconceptions: it’s an apprenticeship. In this article John Henry, MD at EDA Apprenticeships Plus – the partners behind
Counterintuitive or good commercial sense? We discover why planning your team’s training schedule now could make all the difference to post-COVID-19 survival. the EDA’s Apprenticeship Service for members and affiliated members – talks about why this long-established, but often misunderstood programme, could be just what your business needs as it plans for a post-COVID-19 world. A worthwhile investment It may seem counterintuitive discussing apprenticeships and training at a time when cost-cutting, recruitment freezes and redundancies loom on the horizon, however apprenticeships could offer an

operational lifeline. What will be the ‘new’ normal after we return to work? We know that there will be social distancing for some time but will this impact on your staff mix and training and recruitment plans. Far from last in first out, employers are being urged to move away from historic views and look to increase apprenticeships as a tool in their regeneration. We tend to think of Apprenticeships as qualifications for 16-18 year-old, school leavers. This is not the case. It is the Government’s term to describe a workbased qualification for all age groups and for all levels in your business, right up to post-degree level. So apprenticeships are not only for introducing new talent but also for upskilling existing team members at any level at this time when many would like to use available time to advance themselves and your business. Skills such as logistics for deliveries, on-line sales and marketing, webinars and digital communication and, of course, health and safety are areas that will be in great demand. Flexible furloughing Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced that from 1st July 2020, businesses can (with the agreement of the employee) bring furloughed team members back for any amount of time and any shift pattern, whilst still being able to claim the Coronavirus
TRAINING
Job Retention Scheme (furloughing) grant for the hours not worked. This also means that the minimum furlough period (currently three consecutive weeks) will no longer apply, and flexible furlough agreements can last for any period. This is, in my opinion, the most important improvement to the scheme, where there is some work for employees to do as the sector moves out of lockdown, but not enough to justify a full return to normal working hours. In fact, employers with an eye for the commercial would see the sense in having some of their higher paid employees attracting HMRC support at the higher level. In all reality you would not necessarily need an entire team of highly experienced employees, at the greatest cost, when less expensive, highly motivated and enthusiastic apprentices can share and perform many of the duties at perhaps a lower cost. Inspiring loyalty Another example of how apprenticeships, and training in general, can assist your business is with the added value you are bringing to a job role and thereby using an apprenticeship as a retention tool. Naturally, given the current circumstances, pay rises will be more the exception than the norm and employees will also be asked to do more within their job roles. Whilst an employer may not be able to offer a pay rise, what they can offer is fully funded training with paid and protected study time. This is not only an investment for the employee, but also prepares and
all reality you would “notInnecessarily need an entire team of highly experienced employees, at the greatest cost, when less expensive, highly motivated and enthusiastic apprentices can share and perform many of the duties at perhaps a lower cost.
”
trains them for their expanded role. A job paying, say, £25k can be enhanced with a qualification with a value of, say, £12k without costing the employer more than a 5% contribution or use of levy funds, which would otherwise be lost. As yet there is no word as to the extension of the life of levy funds payed by employers! Levy losers In summary, now is the perfect time to train, especially if job roles are shared for a period until the economy recovers over 2021. Employees can continue to train whilst on furlough or partial furlough, so what a time to enhance skills. SMEs will continue to receive Government support for 95% of the course cost and can now register directly with the Digital Apprenticeship Service (or DAS) for up to three staff members. A larger organisation paying the compulsory apprenticeship levy will use its levy contribution on the course.
If levy funds are not used by an employer (larger businesses pay the compulsory apprenticeship levy) then they revert to the Government – ‘use it or lose it’ as the saying goes. New skills, new world As well as supporting with staff retention and upskilling, apprenticeships can also be used as a recruitment tool. To survive and thrive post-Covid-19, the industry is now focused on increasing online provision and delivery services. New talent will be needed to continue this growth, however high salaries could prove prohibitive. By recruiting an apprentice and having them learn on the job, you are creating an ambassador for your business, and lower salaries can be paid whilst they train. Benefits worth exploring Efficient job sharing, keeping costs down, staff retention and viable recruitment are just a few of the many benefits of training and apprenticeships as a route back postCovid-19. Accessing apprenticeships is unfortunately not without some complexities: recruitment, eligibility checks, management of funding and training provider engagement are just a few of the barriers that make utilising apprenticeships daunting. Recognising these issues, the Electrical Distributors’ Association is waiting to assist. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

NIGLON CONTROL & AUTOMATION CATALOGUE The latest launch from Niglon sees over 600 new product lines, encompassed in a 71 page ‘Control & Automation’ catalogue. The range has taken 12 months to come together and includes a wide array of frequently asked for products under the five category headings: Enclosures, Motor Control Gear, Relays, Enclosed Switchgear, and Panel Components. The identification and selection of automation control products can be problematic for electrical wholesalers; the new catalogue has been designed with this in mind. SAFE AND SOUND ESP has recently provided security solutions for a national haulage company based in Warwickshire, sourced locally through electrical distributor, Moredale.
F
ounded in 1959 and originally specialising in livestock movements across the UK, the Allelys Group has grown to be one of the largest and most successful transport and specialist heavy lift companies in the UK. Having expanded considerably in recent years at its base in Studley, Warwickshire, and occupying a vast amount of land to deal with a growing UK and global client base, Allelys embarked on a programme to increase and upgrade the security on the premises, so that all areas of the site were adequately covered.
Local connections Andy Pym, Electrician for the company, sought the recommendation for a suitable CCTV system from local electrical distributor, Moredale, who put him in touch with ESP, one of their key security products suppliers. A site visit by ESP Sales Manager, Scott Phillimore, was arranged to get a full picture of the requirements so that a suitable CCTV solution could be recommended. The premises house a number of buildings that cater for the
various business divisions, including heavy storage, heavy haulage, crane shops, heavy presses and warehousing, as well as the office space required for the 50 or so employees based there. Scott recommended products from ESP’s HDView, 4MP CCTV range. ESP launched its 4MP CCTV range to supply the electrical wholesale market with a complete collection of high quality, high end CCTV products. The range offers an upgrade from 1080p (2 MP) to 4MP to give users a higher density of pixels to produce a super high definition image clarity. Multi-channel system For the Allelys project, multiple DVR’s ranging from 4 to 16 channels and offering up to 16TB of storage were recommended and installed. The 8 channel systems support up to 8 cameras each and offer 4MP live view and recording. They allow for remote viewing via the ESP HDView app, with remote monitoring via wired connection or Wi-Fi. Various 4MP HD cameras have also been mounted to provide superior
coverage across the site. These include 3.6mm, fixed lens, 4MP HD cameras as well as 6-22mm, varifocal, 4MP HD cameras. Where there are larger areas to cover, a number of Pan, Tilt and Zoom cameras have been installed. These true HD 2MP cameras have a 4.7-84.6mm varifocal lens and offer a full 360° rotation pan function. Andy Pym, adds: “With such a vast site to protect and with varying requirements for different areas it was looking like a fairly complicated task. However, what has most impressed me is just how easy these systems have been to install. It was all very straightforward and we have had great support from ESP and know that we can rely on them for any technical advice.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

TWO BECOME ONE ESP and Ovia have come together to convert a former surgery into a new commercial premises, providing lighting, emergency lighting and fire safety solutions.
O
riginally constructed as two separate residential properties, no’s 1 and 2 Craigmillar Castle Road, Edinburgh, were later converted into a GP surgery and operated as such for many years. With the premises now back in the ownership of Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association, ESP and Ovia has helped with the transition. The starting point was to replace the two existing fuse boxes with a new one to serve the entire building. A full lighting upgrade was also required to ensure the premises met with the various legislative requirements and a new fire protection system was installed.
Fire safety ESP’s recently launched MAGDUO TwoWire Fire Alarm System was selected as it offered a highly flexible and adaptable system that saved valuable time and money on the installation process. TwoWire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. Unlike standard conventional four wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, MAGDUO utilises intelligent, Two-Wire technology, which allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material costs. The products used were the MAGDUO 4-Zone Fire Panel along with heat and smoke detectors and manual call points.
Shining a light Lighting products from ESP’s Duceri emergency lighting range have also been installed. These include LED, 2W, maintained exit sign legends and LED, 3W, maintained emergency signs. When it came to choosing general lighting solutions to cover smaller rooms, corridors and storage areas, the popular Ovia Inceptor EVO LED bulkheads were the preferred choice – with the emergency variant being utilised on escape routes and corridors. The Inceptor EVO Bulkhead was designed with the contractor very much in mind. It is quick to install and simple to use and offers a number of features and benefits. As well as integrating the control gear and the light source within the diffuser, the bulkhead has the added benefit of a Flow plug which allows for fast and simple connection and disconnection for testing and maintenance of the luminaire. With other bulkhead products, the installer will need to first unscrew the diffuser and then the gear tray, fix the base to the wall, terminate the conductor,

re-attach the gear tray and re-screw the diffuser. Ovia has taken away the need for time-consuming and unnecessary screws and integrated the control gear and light source within the diffuser and added a Flow connector. The installer, therefore, simply removes the diffuser, fits the base to the wall/ceiling, wires the conductor into the flow connector and secures the diffuser in place. Alec Macindoe, Works Manager, working on the installation, comments: “It was an easy decision to make when we were given the opportunity to quote for this work and deliver it with our in-house labour. The next decision was which products to use. We have a great relationship with Scolmore Group and when one company can cover all aspects of the project from design, specification, technical support, and all at a very competitive price, then that made the decision easy for me.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
