Support network

Many heating and plumbing professionals work alone, or as part of a small team, and although most of the time training and experience is enough to solve the everyday conundrums present in many jobs, at times even the most highly skilled tradespeople can use a bit of a hand.

Within the industry there are a variety of sources plumbers and heating engineers can turn to. Fellow plumbers might be able to help, industry bodies and associations can provide members with assistance, while product manufacturers often have technical helplines to call if specific product advice is needed.

One area that has grown over the past few years is the breadth of online resources that manufacturers are making available to installers. While these often feature the more traditional data sheets, technical specifications and fitting guides, they are increasingly being supplemented by videos, blogs, podcasts and more.

Many manufacturers also have online hubs or academies, or similar initiatives, which installers can join to access a company’s online training courses, webinars or wider technical content.

Recognising that many tradespeople continue to value face-to-face or ‘in-person' training, manufacturers are also offering courses at locations across the country. Some also have demonstration vehicles that deliver small group training or product updates even closer to installers.

Of course, just keeping up-to-speed on what is ‘out there’ can be a challenge during a busy working week, but that is where PHPI can help. Both in print and online – and alongside all the feature stories and product updates – we’ll keep you in touch with the latest training opportunities, new product launches from manufacturers and any new initiatives they are introducing.

IAA CONFIRMS PLANS FOR NEW NATIONALENERGY EFFICIENCYCENTRE

IAA (the Installation Assurance Authority) has confirmed its commitment to a new National Energy Efficiency Centre (NEEC) by signing a lease for a new 17,000 square foot premises at Union Park in Leighton Buzzard.

It will provide a purpose-built training space aimed at delivering a range of professional and practical skills across the building fabric, renewable energy and low carbon heating sector.

Nigel Donohue, CEO of The IAA said: “I’m delighted to make this announcement, which follows on from the commitment I made at our Annual Conference in October 2023. The NEEC will help to address the significant skills shortage our industry faces as we strive to deliver the Net Zero retrofit agenda. It will be focused upon upskilling the existing workforce, providing training for new entrants, those looking for a career transfer and importantly supporting Schools and Colleges with the development and delivery of content mapped to The IAA’s recently consulted upon Career Pathways work.”

NEWGUIDETOCODETECTOR REQUIREMENTS

The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) and the Council of Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring (CoGDEM) have launched a guide on carbon monoxide (CO) detector requirements across the UK. The move follows several regulatory changes across the different countries in the UK.

As variation in CO legisation across the England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland potentially opens the doorto confusion among engineers, the guide has been launched to provide the best practice for each region. Property owners, including private and social landlords, must ensure that CO detectors are present in each property, in the appropriate locations and in accordance with legislation and related guidance. As a result, the role of heating engineers in maintaining CO safety throughout the industry is only growing in importance. Designed to help prevent further confusion around a number of potential issues, the guide highlights the differing requirements including the number of CO detectors required in a property, the batteries that must be used and the position that detectors must be installed.

Kevin Lowe, Technical Manager of the HHIC, said: “Following the changes to CO legislation made throughout the UK in the past year, it’s crucial that heating engineers are aware of the different obligations across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It’s just as important that this information is easily accessible, which is why we have released a quick guide to help engineers, landlords and property owners easily understand the regulations they must adhere to.”

Fernox is celebrating its 60th year in 2024. VAILLANTWELCOMESLOWCARBON HEATING TECHNICIANAPPRENTICES

In a move to address the need to attract more apprentices into the field, Vaillant is supporting the inaugural cohort of Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprentices (LCHTA) in partnership with Derby College Group, where the students will be based.

Vaillant is investing in 10 full-time, employed apprentices throughout a 3-year course. The new apprentices will eventually graduate as a Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician. Mark Wilkins, Training and Technologies Director at Vaillant commented: “Investing in young people and encouraging new entrants to the industry is paramount for the future of low carbon technologies. I was delighted to see such a huge interest in the Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship, and we have been overwhelmed with the amount of passion and drive that all applicants displayed.

“It is also encouraging to see a diverse group of applicants – we are seeing a shift in the industry, historically being male dominant, so it is exciting to be part of these changes, building the future workforce. GRANT ADDSNEW VIDEOSTO ITS e LEARNING ACADEMY

Grant UK has updated its eLearning Academy with a new series of “Express Training” videos for heating engineers and installers working with heat pumps and hybrid heating systems. The short courses are aimed at those who need to know more about heat pumps and hybrid heating systems and the new smart controls available to help them work efficiently and conveniently.

The company’s new trio of courses cover the Aerona Smart Controller, Homely Optimisation Controls for Grant Heat Pumps and the Grant Evolink Hybrid System Hub and are designed to give a good overview of the products in a short time.

Presented in a video format, each course presents a walkthrough of each product, from introduction to installation, including key features and benefits and how each smart controller works. The course videos demonstrate step-by-step processes, allow the viewer to pause, rewind and rewatch sections for better understanding.

ADEY COMMITS TO NETZERO GOALS

In line with its mission to have a positive impact on people and the environment, ADEY has expressed its full support for contributing to a science-based target (SBTi) of 30% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions and 13% of Scope 3 by 2027 across the Genuit Group, on a pathway to achieving Net Zero by 2050.

The company is launching several initiatives to support carbon reductions throughout the supply chain. Among the latest is a packaging re-design for its filter range.

Made from 70% recycled materials that are 100% recyclable, the new packaging will use 30% less cardboard. Alongside the changes to the product packaging, which the company says will use 72 tonnes less cardboard a year, the removal of the small spanner from the existing boxes will reduce the amount of plastic by 5.5 tonnes a year.

APHC LAUNCHES BESPOKE INSURANCEOFFERFOR MEMBERS

The Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) and APHC Insurance Services has launched a new bespoke insurance offering to APHC Members in partnership with APHC’s insurance provider of choice, Premierline Business Insurance Broker.

The updated insurance package includes a 10% discount for APHC members, 24-hour tool cover, free Legal assistance and, it says, there is no policy excess on the main covers. John Thompson, CEO of APHC, commented: “We are really proud to announce this new insurance offering for APHC members and have been working hard with Premierline Business Insurance Broker to ensure the product is competitive, fit for purpose and meets the needs of the plumbing and heating industry.”

CALLS FOR TOOL THIEVESTO FACE STRICTERPUNISHMENT

Calls are being made for criminals to face stricter punishments for robbing hard-working Brits of their van tools. The motoring team at Lease Van are calling for offenders to have harsher sentences in hopes of reducing the amount of tool thefts in the UK.

Tim Alcock, motoring expert at Lease Van, said: “A van is like a second home to tradespeople and having it broken into is a devastating experience as it severely restricts their work routine. Stolen tools can also cost thousands to replace and this can be even worse if there’s damage to the van itself.”

He continued: “Tool thefts have been on the rise in recent years meaning the problem isn’t going away anytime soon. We believe increasing the maximum sentence will make people think twice before breaking into someone’s van and stealing their hard-earned resources. We’re calling for stricter punishment to be introduced immediately so we can stop the number of offences from rising any higher.”

OCTOPUSENERGY AND NATIONAL GRID TO SPEED-UP HEAT PUMP ROLL-OUT

Octopus Energy and National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) have introduced a new process designed to speed up the installation of heat pumps and other low carbon technologies, such as domestic batteries and electric vehicle chargers.

The company says the additional power required by these devices can mean that the fuse on the incoming electricity supply would need to be upgraded by the local distribution network operator. This new agreement allows Octopus Energy engineers to upgrade the fuse themselves at the same time as they are installing heat pumps, EV chargers and solar panels in their customers’ homes. The company says this removes a step in the process that could add up to 10 weeks to the installation.

Alex Schoch, Head of Flexibility at Octopus Energ, said: “Octopus has proven that by working together, DNOs and installers can bring heat pumps, EVs and solar into homes faster and cheaper, turbocharging the UK’s move to an electrified future.

“By upgrading fuses alongside clean tech installations, we are not only saving NGED resources, but also giving our customers back valuable time. It’s a win-win that highlights how critical collaboration is on our path to net zero.”

READING REVEALED AS BEST CITY FOR A PLUMBING START-UP

The county town of Berkshire has been named as the best city in the UK to start a new plumbing business, according to money.co.uk/business. The organisation analysed cities across the country using factors including job listings and planning applications to indicate demand, and the average salary of trades in the areas to reveal the best cities to start a business in.

The analysis showed that Reading is the best city for plumbers to start a business, with a start-up score of 7.52 out of 10. According to money.co.uk/business, Reading has a high number of Google searches for plumbers per 100,000 people (2,448). The town also has a relatively high number of job listings for plumbers (12.7 per 100,000 people) and boasts an average plumber salary of £40,073.

Reading was also named as the best city to start an electrician business, with an overall score of 8.07/10.

DAIKIN UK PARTNERSWITH GREATER MANCHESTER COLLEGES

Daikin UK is working in partnership with colleges and training providers across Greater Manchester to help train the next generation of heating installers.

In partnership with the Green Skills Academy the company will deliver the first ‘Train the Green Trainer’ programme for college tutors and staff at nine Greater Manchester colleges, including Hopwood College, Trafford College and Oldham College.

The five-day course will be made up of an LCL Awards Level 3 in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems, delivered by the General Services Administration (GSA), and a Daikin Monobloc Level 1 Installation, and Daikin Altherma 3 Level 2 Commissioning certification, delivered by Daikin.

Martin Passingham, Head of Product and Training at Daikin UK, said: “Demand for heat pump installations is currently being let down by the lack of availability of trained and certified installers. At Daikin, we have the capacity to train more than 10,000 installers on air source heat pumps through our accredited and product related courses through Daikin Training Academies and through our extensive network of Sustainable Home Centres – and we’re striving to train around 30% of all installers in the industry.

“Our partnership with the Green Skills Academy will equip college staff and tutors with the tools needed to upskill a new generation of heat pumps installers and help fill the current installer gap.”

PART 2: KEEPING AN EYE ON PROFIT

Net or Gross?

Keep a close eye on the amount of net profit you are making. This is the money left after all costs, taxes and expenses have been deducted. It’s the money that goes towards better living, family holidays and the stuff that really matters.

Don’t be a busy fool

Working on a 10% net profit means that in a 40 hour week, you are only making money in the last four hours of the week. That means the rest of the week up until Friday afternoon, you’re only getting to the break-even point.

Manage costs

The way to really boost net profit is to manage costs properly and keep an eye on the profit level on every job. Did you really need all those materials? Did you invoice on time?

Combustion boilers have seemingly reached their pinnacle, boasting a commendable 94% efficiency. But we shouldn’t just stop there. Further efficiencies can still be made and the answer lies in modification. Even a boiler rated as 94% efficient, ‘wastes’ 6% of the fuel it uses. To put this into financial terms, for every £1 you spend on heating your home with a boiler that's 94% efficient, 6p is wasted. An inefficient boiler will burn through more fuel and cost more to run, therefore increasing efficiency benefits both the environment and the bill payer.

As household energy bills are predominantly comprised of costs for space and water heating, an efficient boiler can make a significant difference. All modern, well-maintained boilers burn their fuel efficiently, but none offer 100% efficiency.

Heating our homes efficiently is something we all need to be proactive about. Newer boilers are more efficient than their older counterparts for several reasons, but their main advantage is that they are ‘condensing’. A condensing boiler recovers more heat from the exhaust flue gas and uses it to heat the central heating water, making it more efficient than older boilers.

WETROOM TRAINING

Now in its ninth year, the ‘We Are Wetrooms’ installation training programme has helped thousands of installers, retailers, plumbers, tilers, and merchant counter sales staff learn about the specification and installation of Impey’s wetroom solutions.

Launched in 2016, the training transitioned to a virtual option in 2021 and has developed with the brand’s product portfolio to encompass information about the company’s core product range including its Aqua-Dec EasyFit floor formers, Aqua-Dec Linear floor formers, WaterGuard waterproofing solution, underfloor heating options and more.

Blended learning

Impey’s training department conducts the sessions from a virtual training hub, kitted out with a product presentation studio and demonstration areas. INSIDEA TMV

Ed Morris, Technical Manager at Altecnic, delves into the inner workings of a crucial component in plumbing systems – the thermostatic mixing valve (TMV). While it may seem like a small and inconspicuous part, TMVs play a significant role in maintaining safety, comfort, and efficiency in various settings, from domestic systems to healthcare and hospitality settings.

ATMV blends cold water with hot water and maintains this at a set constant outlet temperature to ensure safe and comfortable hand washing, shower and bath water temperatures, reducing the risk of scalding. The controlling element of the TMV is a temperature sensor which is fully immersed in the mixed water outlet port. This expands or contracts to continually maintain the correct proportion of hot and cold water entering the valve.

Let’s look in more detail how each internal component works to ensure the TMV functions correctly…

Internal Components of a TMV

Ball Valve Isolation & Strainer

A TMV typically includes ball valve isolators on the hot and cold water inlets. These valves allow for easy maintenance and servicing by enabling the isolation of the TMV from the rest of the plumbing system. When closed, they stop the flow of water into the TMV, ensuring safe access for maintenance or repair work. Before water enters the TMV, it passes through a

strainer. The strainer removes any debris or particles present in the water, preventing them from entering and potentially damaging the internal components of the valve. This helps to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the TMV. It is important that strainers are cleaned during TMV servicing to prevent potential blockages from a build-up of debris. Information on the frequency of servicing can be found in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check Valves

Inside the TMV, there are check valves on both the hot and cold water inlets. These valves allow water to flow in only one direction, preventing backflow and maintaining the integrity of the hot and cold water supplies. By ensuring that water flows only from the inlets towards the mixing chamber, check valves help to prevent cross-contamination between hot and cold water lines.

Flow Conveyor

The flow conveyor is a component responsible for mixing the hot and cold water streams to achieve the desired outlet temperature. It consists of a chamber where the hot and cold water streams meet and mix together. The size of the flow conveyor and the ratio of hot to cold water flow determine the outlet temperature of the TMV.

Thermostat

At the heart of the TMV lies the thermostat, a temperature-sensitive element that regulates the flow of hot and cold water to maintain a constant outlet temperature. The thermostat reacts to changes in the outlet temperature by adjusting the position of the valve within the flow conveyor. For example, if the outlet temperature rises above the set point, the

thermostat will adjust the valve to allow more cold water into the mix, effectively lowering the temperature. Conversely, if the outlet temperature drops below the set point, the thermostat will increase the flow of hot water to raise the temperature.

Comfortable temperature

By combining these internal components, TMV’s ensure that the water delivered to taps, showers, or other fixtures remain at a safe and comfortable temperature, regardless of fluctuations in the incoming hot and cold water supplies. A shower is just a shower, isn’t it? Well, for those living with mobility or visual impairment needs it could be a challenge. For some, a shower can be hard if not impossible to operate without assistance. Tom Doyle, Head of Industrial Design at AKW, discusses how installers can quickly and easily add accessible solutions to their offerings.

Did you to know that 16 million people in the UK have a disability and this represents 24% of the total population.

The most common impairment is mobility, with 47% of those with disabilities citing this issue.

And when it comes to visual impairment, there are over 2 million people living with sight loss in the UK, with this set to rise to 2.7 million by 2030 and 4 million by 2050. Add to this those who live with dementia and it is worth installers getting to know how to make life easier for these people and their families.

For those with mobility, dementia and visual impairment needs, the most common bathroom hazards are poor lighting, no grab rails and trip hazards. When it comes to showering, the issues relate to having to step over the threshold into a bath to access the shower, using shower seats

without arm rests and trying to turn on a shower that is either too complicated to operate or that has controls that are too small to see or use. When it comes to making the bathroom a safer space here are some top tips for installers:

Managed movement

To promote safe movement around the bathroom, install grab rails and shower seats with arm rests. When choosing grab rails and shower seats, particularly for those with visual impairments use two colours where the light reflective value (LRV) difference between both colours is greater than 30. This creates the most noticeable contrast between an object and its surroundings. AKW’s grab rails and shower seats are available in a range of colours to aid those with visual impairments. Also remember that colour contrast is best achieved with

contrasting shades of the same colour rather than different colours.

Lighting the way

For those with low vision, the avoidance of shadows, dark areas and glare are key to safe movement around a bathroom. Think about installing LED task downlights with a narrow 30° beam angle over specific ‘task-based areas’ such as the shower, bath, sink or toilet. Also install additional ambient lighting, to maintain general light levels throughout the bathroom space.

Showering success

Look for BEAB Care certified or approved by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) showers. This is because they will reduce barriers to use for those with mobility or visual impairment issues. Maximum water temperature protection is also essential, and the shower should have a thermal cut out device to protect the unit from overheating.

Accessible showering needn’t be complicated or expensive.

FASTER PIPE FIXING

Walraven’s RapidRail is being used to make pipework installations faster.

Whether on commercial or domestic projects, installing pipework can be a labour intensive and time-consuming task, and even more challenging when the installation is overhead. Designed to be faster to fit than traditional strut, Walraven’s RapidRail® is a 30mm x 20mm channel to support pipes, cable trays, ductwork and more. Its construction means it is lighter and less bulky than traditional strut making it easier to handle, especially when working overhead.

Walraven says it has a similar performance to traditional strut, and as the system has fewer parts it is faster to assemble and install. It is available in 2m lengths and features pre-assembled slide nuts to enable faster construction. The system has been designed so installers do not need to use any nuts, bolts, washers and stud to attach the clips. The pre-assembled slide nuts push and twist into the rail, and pipe clamps screw directly on.

Case studies

Younger Smith Plumbing & Heating used RapidRail for first fix of pipework in a large property in Essex. With a substantial amount of pipework to install they wanted something that would be quick and easy to install.

“This huge country house required a huge amount of pipework. Walraven’s RapidRail made this job a breeze, top quality product. It’s such a shame it’s getting covered over!”

Chris Illingworth from WTH Heating and Plumbing has started using RapidRail for his large domestic and light commercial installations, and recently used it on a job for fabricating ceiling hanging trapeze frames. This installation was a large, new house which will be heated by a ground source heat pump. Chris and his team were tasked with fitting out the plant room and installing all the pipework throughout the property for the heating system.

The installation required ceiling hanging pipe supports throughout the

property. Usually Chris and his team would have used standard 41×41 channel to create trapeze frame supports for suspended pipework. On this occasion Chris decided to try Walraven RapidRail which weighs less than 1kg per metre, to see if using a lighter channel with fully pre-assembled fixings would make the job easier.

Walraven RapidRail 30×20 was used on this job for both the wall-mounted pipework and for fabricating trapeze frames to carry the pipes through the ceiling space. The trapeze frames were constructed using two Walraven RapidRail pieces with Walraven RapidRail slide nuts to drop the threaded rod down and connect the two pieces of rail. The company’s Hammerfix nuts with pre-cut stud were used to attach the pipe clips.

Chris commented: “Part of the reason for using Walraven RapidRail is the fact it’s light and easy to use at height on the scaffolds whilst installing the framework. This, alongside the really easy slide nut and Hammerfix connectors that just twist into the rail, really helped bring the installation time down from what we estimated it would be using the heavier 41×41 channel product. The system really exceeded our expectations and made the install at height much easier.”

Controllers for heat pumps are now smarter and have the potential to open up new business opportunities for installers, explains Andy Smith, National Sales Manager at Grant UK.

Smart controllers are becoming more popular with homeowners; research indicates a growing trend in the adoption of smart technologies in the home, with households across the nation embracing voice-controlled lighting, heating, security and other smart home functions. According to a report by Statista, as of 2023, approximately 35 per cent of UK households have at least one smart home device, with this number projected to increase to over 50 per cent by 2025.

Heat pumps are also now well and truly in the smart controller era, with controls available that enable users to operate their systems remotely. Not only that, but many controls also have diagnostic capabilities too, alerting homeowners, installers and engineers to any issues with the heat pump, which can prevent minor problems from escalating into major repairs.

STEP-BY-STEP Mixer gy i HP X

The Mixergy iHP X integrated heat pump cylinder has been designed so that the heat pump and cylinder are separate – different to other integrated heat pump cylinders on the market. This design makes it easier and lighter to transport, install and maintain and it comes pre-plumbed with simple connections designed for easy installation.

Only G3 unvented certification is required, and no F-GAS qualification is needed. Being modular, both the cylinder and the heat pump unit of the Mixergy iHP X are separate, everything is accessible, and both can be serviced and repaired.

It’s better for the end user too, because rather than taking hours to heat a full cylinder of water, it uses Mixergy’s ‘top down’ Stratos technology. By only heating the hot water needed, useable hot water can be available in under 30 minutes when in ‘fast boost’ mode.

Installation step-by-step

The position of the cylinder should suit the installation and all connections should be to the front for ease of access. Ensure there is at least 350mm of vertical clearance above the cylinder from the top of the ducting spigots. Installation of the cylinder should be carried out as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The heat pump unit is then fitted as follows.

Pipework sub-assemblies, three-way ball valve motor, seals and screws are all provided for the job. Ducting for handling the exhaust and intake of air to the heat pump head unit is not included as the length will vary, depending on the complexity and positioning of the duct.

unit and immersion feeds are opposite genders to avoid incorrect assembly and are fitted by pushing the connectors into the sockets and twisting clockwise to lock into place. The sensor and data cables also need to be plugged in.

Initial Cost

One of the most-discussed obstacles to heat pump adoption is the initial installation cost. The upfront cost of air source heat pumps (ASHPs) can be higher than that of traditional systems, leading to initial resistance from consumers. However, professionals should consider presenting this to their customers as a long-term investment. Heat pumps offer energy savings which can offset the initial expense over time. With efficiency ratings of heat pumps reaching up to 400%, they can certainly be more cost-effective in the long run.

The traditional argument against heat pump adoption has been their perceived limitation in colder climates. While early models suffered from this drawback, modern designs have made strides and dramatically improved performance in this area. Systems equipped with variable-speed compressors and advanced refrigerants are increasingly capable of providing reliable heating even when temperatures drop below freezing.

Alpha’s range of heat pumps, for example, runs with pre-loaded R32 refrigerant and the heat pumps are hermetically sealed. This enables the system to operate efficiently at external sub-zero temperatures reaching as low as -20°C.

Maintenance

Maintenance complexity is often cited as a downside for ASHP adoption. However, this need not be the case. Many modern units feature self-diagnostic capabilities, making it easier for technicians to pinpoint issues. As with any appliance, a series of checks and inspections must be performed at regular intervals by a professional to guarantee ideal ongoing operation of the product.

Annual maintenance is mostly straightforward and should include valve and pressure checks, filter cleaning, an electrical switchgear inspection and recording of the glycol concentration and pH value in the water circuit. With proper care, ASHPs can have a lifespan comparable to traditional systems.

Government Incentives

The UK government has been proactive in championing renewable heating technologies as part of its broader green initiative to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As part of this, the government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy (2021) outlined a roadmap for phasing out new natural gas boilers. Within this strategy was the genesis of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, having acknowledged heat pumps as a successful solution in other countries.

Offering up to a £7,500 subsidy towards the cost of installing an ASHP, the homeowner must fund the remaining balance of typically a further £7,500, depending on the model specified. Three years on, this incentive is still struggling to gain traction as the balance is regrettably out of reach for those households with less disposable income – and this is despite the grants having been increased by £2,500 in October 2023.

While our view as a business is that the scheme should be significantly overhauled in favour of less wealthy households, we do recognise that having renewable incentives available has been a step in the right direction from government.

Noise Levels

Noise generated by older ASHP models has been a point of contention. However, today’s designs have significantly reduced operational noise through better insulation, quieter fans and more advanced compressors. While they may not be as ‘silent-running’ as some other heating options, the noise level is often low enough to meet residential requirements.

To ensure any impact on neighbouring homes is limited, a noise calculation must be carried out before the heat pump is installed for a heat pump to comply with

permitted development rules. Completed by the installer, the calculation looks at the sound power level of the pump, any reflective surfaces (such as the wall or floor), its position distance from any neighbours’ closest habitable rooms, as well as if there are any barriers (e.g. fencing) standing between the unit and the neighbouring property or properties.

Technical Complexity

The introduction of sophisticated technologies in ASHPs does pose a learning curve for installers and service technicians. This is less a barrier and more an opportunity for professionals to upskill. Many manufacturers now offer specialised training sessions to help technicians get acquainted with the nuances of their systems. Understanding these complexities can become a strong selling point, making you a go-to expert in a growing field.

Conclusion

Air source heat pumps have come a long way in addressing the challenges that have long stood in the way of their widespread adoption. Their initial cost is increasingly justified by higher efficiency and lower operating expenses; and advancements in technology have made them suitable for a broader range of climates. Coupled with easier maintenance regimes, government incentives, reduced noise levels and opportunities for professional development, ASHPs are becoming a hard-to-ignore option in the heating and cooling market.

MAKEMULTI-OCCUPANCYBUILDINGS MORE sust ainable

Richard Bateman, Product Marketing Manager at RWC, provides five ways installers and specifiers can make multi-occupancy buildings more sustainable.

Cities across the UK have been experiencing rapid growth over recent decades and, as their populations have expanded, so too have their buildings. Today, multi-occupancy properties are commonplace in urban environments, with high-rise residential buildings also becoming familiar features. As these buildings become more popular to house the growing population, sustainability needs to be a core focus, with plumbing and heating playing a key role.

To adequately supply individual units within multi-occupancy buildings, both a commercial and domestic plumbing and heating system will typically be required. While this means that there is a greater chance of inefficiencies arising due to a larger and more complex system, it also creates greater opportunities to improve efficiency, performance, and sustainability.

Here are five key considerations to keep in mind through both the specification and installation phases.

Enabling heat efficiency with underfloor heating

When opting for underfloor heating (UFH) –which is being widely adopted in domestic properties to improve comfort and sustainability – specifiers will need to consider the floor construction throughout the building. Just as in a traditional domestic setting, establishing the floor construction in a multi-occupancy building is key to ensuring the most effective UFH solution is selected. It’s common to see screeded solid floors constructed from concrete block and beams within these buildings, however, it's also likely that the floor could be constructed from standard timber substrates – therefore, identifying

the type of sub floor is essential as there are specific solutions for each.

When retrofitting an UFH system in a multi-occupancy building with a concrete block and beam floor construction, a low-profile system is the most cost effective and practical option. One such solution from JG Underfloor – the JG LowFit Castellated Panels for 12 or 15mm pipe – can be installed directly over solid floors, delivering a high heat output at lower flow temperatures, while also keeping floor height build up to a minimum, only raising it by 21-25mm.

Reducing connections

As more apartments are housed within single buildings, one area of plumbing that becomes more difficult and time-consuming for installers is the assembly of the single chain of valves supplying water from the mains to individual apartments. In addition to being time consuming to connect, having to

make many connections poses an increased risk of leaks occurring.

This is where the Tenant Valve from Reliance Valves can be of great benefit, controlling and monitoring water supply to multiple units. The valve’s single unit cartridge design requires only two connections to be made, which ensures a quick installation for plumbers, while the valve itself takes up much less space in comparison to its chain valve counterpart.

Detecting leaks

In addition to installing leak-reducing solutions, new technologies can detect leaks as they occur, and prevent them causing damage to homes and disruption for residents. The Reliance Valves MultiSafe Leak Detector does exactly that. Upon detecting a leak, the system shuts off an inbuilt isolation valve, cutting off water to the affected area, while alerting the building owner that a leak has occurred.

Additionally, the system has a

self-learning element, which means it is able to adjust the flow of water to different areas of a building, based on how much the system predicts is required by each unit. This optimises the water usage, and in turn, building sustainability.

Keeping track of flow rates

In addition to leaks, one of the major causes of water losses in multi-occupancy buildings is poor flow control. This can lead to more water than necessary coming out of an outlet. This is much more of an issue in multi-occupancy buildings, where there is a greater volume of outlets across multiple dwellings.

To overcome this issue and prioritise sustainability, a balance must be achieved between water pressure and water usage. To make this possible, Reliance Valves’ Floreg Isolating Valve and Strainer can be used to maintain flow rates at the desired level, between 4 and 15 litres per minute, ultimately reducing water usage and energy consumption.

Staging PRVs

Tying into flow regulation, the staging of pressure reducing valves (PRVs) can create more sustainable water usage practices. Multi-occupancy buildings fall under the category of commercial buildings, which receive water at a pressure as high as 15 bar. So, while a high pressure will ensure water reaches every corner of the building, 15 bar is far too high to be safely discharged from an outlet, making PRVs essential.

Most PRVs have an operating ratio in which they can perform safely. For example, a valve with a ratio of 3:1 would be able to take in a water pressure of 12 bar and output no less than 4 bar safely. This means that multiple PRVs are required to reach a safe outlet pressure, which is why staging PRVs is important.

Typically, one PRV would be installed on each floor of the building, and then a second PRV directly connected to each apartment. Staging PRVs stabilises the flow rate of the water, which allows the PRV

directly connected to the apartment or hotel room to make more efficient use of the water it receives.

The Tenant Valve has an inbuilt PRV, which can act as the valve that connects to each apartment, however, the water must have passed through an initial PRV before it reaches this stage. Amongst the PRVs offered by Reliance Valves is the Commercial 315i Series Pressure Reducing Valve, which has a pressure ratio of 10:1, meaning it can reduce a water pressure of 20 bar to 2 bar, without any risk of damage.

PUMP ING HOT WASTEWATER

Pump Technology Ltd explores the issue of pumping hot wastewater and provides some guidance on solutions for commercial kitchens.

Reliability is essential for busy commercial kitchens. This is especially true when pumping hot wastewater from equipment such as pasta boilers, glasswashers, dishwashers, combi ovens and even sinks with boiling water taps. While all wastewater pumping systems utilise submersible pumps, these are generally only designed for pumping wastewater at nominal temperatures of 35°C.

Manufactures specification for some of these pumps will often state that the pump is rated for intermittent use up to elevated temperatures of 65°C. However, this can place limitations on their use and reliability in a commercial environment.

Continuous use

For wastewater coming from a system that regularly discharges hot wastewater, a submersible pump rated for continuous use is essential. One solution for hot wastewater pumping is the Jung Pumpen 730HES (10m closed valve), or for higher discharge requirements, the 1030HES (12.5m closed valve). Due to their internal shaft seal design, specification and choice of construction materials these pumps are rated for continuous operation at 90°C, meaning that they are specifically designed for hot wastewater.

Automatic system

These include the Pump Technology Ltd, DrainMajor (pictured) for single pump specification or, if a twin duty standby pumping system is required, the DrainMajor Duo and DrainKing.

These pumps can be used as part of an automatic hot wastewater pumping system and a number of different floor mounted tank designs and options are available.

Pumps are free standing within the tank and connected via internal pipe work to the tank discharge and non-return valve. The automatic start stop is controlled by the pump’s own large, triangular, low-level float, which is external to the pump body and attached via a rigid float arm. The unit has been designed to ensure reliable operation, even when the incoming flow is turbulent or contains debris that could tangle or block conventual lead or tube float systems.

A Warm WELCOME

Hamworthy Heating explains how its high-efficiency low-temperature hot water (LTHW) heating system was included as part of a major refurbishment to help The Knaresborough Inn minimise energy costs and maintain a comfortable environment.

To meet the demands of the Grade II listed building and provide sufficient coverage for an Inn of this standard, Sine Consulting Ltd specified a system that comprised two Stratton mk3 wall-hung condensing boilers and two Dorchester DR-SG stainless steel condensing water heaters.

“We choose this new LTHW system as it is more than capable of meeting the demands of our clients who are an ever-expanding hotelier group who put guest satisfaction and experience alike at the forefront of what they do as a business,” commented James Coleman, Sine Consulting Limited.

Faced with limited space within the plant room, when it came to specifying a boiler for the new system, the Stratton mk3, which features a small and lightweight design, provided simple installation and offered a space saving alternative to floor standing options. To further simplify the practical elements of the installation process, the Dorchester DR-SG, which features a diameter of 80cm (excluding models), enabled the water heaters to be easily transported through standard doorways without needing to remove any product

elements (such as insulation jackets).

Hamworthy also supplied a low-loss header to work in conjunction with the Stratton MK3 boilers. The header is sized with a very low velocity and when positioned correctly will effectively separate the primary and secondary systems and help to keep any system pollutants away from the boiler circuit.

The stainless-steel aspect of both the Stratton mk3 and the Dorchester DR-SG was also a big consideration when it came to product selection. FERNOX INTRODUCESNEW ANTIFREEZEVALVES

Fernox has introduced new TF1 Antifreeze Valves to its portfolio of renewable products. Available in two sizes suitable for both compression and BSP fittings, the valves have been specifically engineered for heat pump applications, to prevent ice forming in heating and cooling systems and damaging the heat pump itself.

The company says that when temperatures drop, systems that are not treated with a glycol-based fluid can freeze

within the heat pump circuit, which can result in harmful and costly damage to vulnerable components and pipework. The Fernox TF1 Antifreeze Valve reduces this risk thanks to its internal sensor, which detects when the fluid in the system is close to freezing to initiate protective action.

Specifically, it says, when the circuit temperature drops to 3°C, typically in the event of the heat pump ceasing to circulate fluid due to a power outage or other external factor, the valve opens to discharge a small amount of fluid, allowing the circuit to drain until it returns to a temperature above 3°C, at which point the

valve closes. This action has been designed to prevent potential damage to the heat pump and pipework caused by the formation of ice in the system.

Dual sensor

Manufactured from brass the valve is available in two sizes to suit the application – either 28mm Compression or 1¼” BSP. In addition, the 1¼” BSP TF1 Antifreeze Valve is also manufactured with a 1” BSP female connection for ease of installation on the flow and return pipes. The company says its TF1 Antifreeze Valve features a new technology dual sensor thermostatic module for accurate water temperature monitoring, so that the TF1 Antifreeze Valve responds to actual water temperature, not the effects of wind chill.

“When fluid in a heat pump system freezes, it can lead to costly repairs and unscheduled downtime, leaving the building without heat, which is always a concern for end users during the cold season,” said Mark Hall, Head Of Mechanical Engineering at Fernox. “Our new TF1 Antifreeze Valves offer a proactive and preventative solution to safeguard against such issues and is an essential component in protecting the heath of the system.”

SCHLÜTER-SYSTEMS STEAMROOM

At a residential property in Lancashire a variety of Schlüter-KERDI products have been used to help correct a previous installation, resulting in a high-end steam room ensuite. Steve Wagstaff of Pro-Tilers UK , who had previously attended one of the company’s training sessions commented: “After seeing what the client was left with, it became clear that we needed a reliable solution to get it right this time around – Schlüter products have always worked well for us especially in this type of area, so it was the perfect fit.”

Steve created two benches using Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD, tile backerboard, which became a feature within the room once finished. As part of the installation Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD-ZB was also used. A U-shaped stainless-steel profile, it connects structures made from panels of Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD.

Waterproof solution

The steam room section, which was separated by a glass screen, was waterproofed using Schlüter-KERDI-DS along with Schlüter-KERDI-COLL-L and sealing band Schlüter-KERDI-FLEX for a long-lasting waterproof solution. To finish off the steam area, a frameless Schluter-KERDI-LINE-DRAIN was installed, nestled between the benches for a seamless and attractive tiled finish.

Steve concluded: “The team at Schlüter was on hand to provide advice and support throughout this entire process. They suggested innovative ideas for the space and were quick to come back with the perfect Schlüter solution. We were thrilled to see how pleased the client was with the finished steam room that they could finally enjoy using.”

Stelrad radiators has been selected for a new build project at a Primary School in East Leake near Loughborough in Nottinghamshire. The new build project was for the new Millside Academy which comprises of classrooms, staff offices, a dining hall, a studio and the main kitchens for the school.

Resideo has announced that configuring its Honeywell Home evohome smart zoning system is now possible with its new online system builder tool. Viessmann Climate Solutions UK has launched a new air source heat pump designed for residential developments, smallto mid-scale commercial and public sector applications.

The Vitocal 200-A Pro is available in 32, 64 and 128 kW outputs and can be cascaded up to 1024 kW. All models provide both heating and active cooling within a single appliance and can be operated in bi- or monovalent modes.

The Vitocal 200-A Pro offers a flow temperature of 65°C at -7°C making it suited to modernisation projects if integration with existing systems is required. The units have a SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) of 4.4, and use the refrigerant R407C.

“This is a very user-friendly heat pump,” said Viessmann Product Manager, Hugh Jones. “It’s particularly well-suited to urban environments where space is at a premium, thanks to its low noise levels, compact size, and incombustible refrigerant. You only need to see the unit to appreciate how sturdy and durable it is. PB Plumber has a late night call out to repair a leak in a toilet. Following the job he asks his audience how much they would charge for it and runs through the range of responses he received along with some of the reasons why jobs might be priced at different levels. Then he goes on to investigate a high pH level in a customer’s boiler, demonstrating how to measure the pH level in a system before flushing and re-filling it, and dosing it with inhibitor. Next, he demonstrates a radiator replacement, using his press gun, before providing some advice on sealing round a bath.
