Elf and safety When you’re working 12 hour days in the cold depths of winter attempting to understand why a customer’s boiler isn’t firing up, maintaining your professional integrity can be quite a challenge; especially when there is no answer from the frustrating technical support line that has closed for the evening. It’s understandable that the thought of a warm, home-cooked meal and an evening with the family catching up on the latest episode of Succession (I would highly recommend watching this show), is enough to make anyone want to rush the job they’re currently doing. But, as this scenario becomes ever more common in an installer’s daily ritual, the message of safety should never be forgotten. Saving five minutes here or there by not popping out to the van to fetch the multimeter or safety glasses is ultimately never worth the risk. It’s a message that Michael Goodall, a 31-year-old plumber from Leeds, is trying to get across at present. Michael was recently left with a cut down his face, a shattered eye socket and cheek bone, and limited vision in one eye courtesy of a grinder shattering as he cut through the last metre of tarmac needed to bury a cable. Fortunately, the safety glasses he was wearing that day saved his life, but the after-effects have still left him with low self-confidence. Michael’s message is this: “It’s easy to get the job finished. But, at the end of the day, get home to your partner, your kids – just get home safe.” Clearly, this was an extremely unfortunate accident and one that should never realistically happen. The level of safety mechanisms on tools and equipment these days is far greater than it ever has been before, but at the end of the day, accidents do happen. Working in the trades has countless benefits over sitting in an office all day, but there is inevitably a greater risk of injury when working with gas, electrics, power tools and heavy equipment. So what’s our message? Well, the same as Michael’s really – get home safe! An extra five minutes to fetch the safety glasses may be a nuisance at 8pm, but if they can increase the chance of you getting home safely to your loved ones, surely it’s worthwhile? Finally, in a message that simply has nothing to do with any of the above, it is with a heavy heart to say that this will be my last issue as Editor on PHPI. I have been involved in this industry for the past three years now, and I can confidently say it has opened my eyes to the incredible work that you all do on a daily basis. Acts of kindness and charity have become a regular occurrence in my inbox, and every professional installer should be proud to be a part of this industry. I’d like to thank you all for letting me be a small part of it, as well as all the manufacturers and associated businesses I have worked with in my time. I have no doubt my successor, Jonathan Cole, will be just as impressed by this sector as I have been. Best of luck to you all, and have a very merry Christmas!

News CONSUMERS RELY ON THE RELIABLE Worcester Bosch has released findings from its recent ‘boiler in a day’ research demonstrating the huge role boilers play in the nation’s lives. The survey found that over one third (35%) of Brits aren’t aware that a winter boiler breakdown would have a large impact on their day-to-day life and are therefore downplaying the importance of heating and hot water.
What about installers? The company’s research found that when it comes to choosing an installer, reliability was the most important factor for customers (32%), followed by professionalism (21%) and price (20%). Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch, said: “Every year, we see more boiler breakdowns in the latter half of the year, causing a significantly longer waiting list to fix a boiler in the winter months. Installers need to use their quality and expertise to fit reliable boilers and tell their customers to get regular checks to help prevent this from happening.”

Michael Goodall, a 31-year-old Plumber from Leeds, is joining forces with safety experts, Arco, to highlight the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) after a grinder left him with a cut down his face, a shattered eye socket and cheek bone and limited vision in one eye. Michael, who owns plumbing company, iPlumb, was cutting the last metre of tarmac needed to bury a cable, when the grinder he was operating shattered and hit his face, leaving him “looking like a monster”, unable to see out of one eye, and lodging a piece of metal in his safety glasses. Michael usually wears safety boots, gloves and sunglasses while working. However, on this day, his colleague Paul lent him safety glasses from Arco, which Michael claims saved his eye and his life. Michael said, “It was so quick, there was no warning that it was going to break and I couldn’t dodge it, but when it hit my face it felt like my whole skeleton shook. I immediately knew it was serious. “Before the accident, I knew very little about what level of protection I needed, and I’m not alone in that. For instance, few people know about categories for rating the level of protection given by PPE, like protective eyewear. I didn’t know the safety glasses I was wearing were rated F, which is the lowest rating, so they weren’t suitable for the job at all. You need a lot better protection, such as a Grade A High Energy Impact Full-Face Visor, for grinding.” After the accident, Michael shared his story on social media to help raise awareness and thanked Arco for the safety glasses that had saved his life. Arco was touched by his story and concerned he didn’t have the correct protective safety kit, so decided to take action, inviting him to the company’s Leeds branch to explain more about PPE. Michael underwent several operations to fix the damage to his face and eye, including a three-hour operation after the accident, but the after-effects left him with low self-confidence. Michael said: “In anything you’re going to do, think - what is the worst possible outcome? If it’s something you definitely don’t want to happen, then make sure it’s not going to happen. Take the right precautions, don’t rush and don’t cut corners. “By sharing my story, I want people to see what could happen if you don’t wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment… It’s easy to just want to get the job finished. But, at the end of the day, get home to your partner, your kids – just get home safe. There’s always tomorrow to finish it. Just be safe.”

TOOL THEFT CLAIMS RISE 54% IN TWO YEARS
CIPHE TALKS TOUGH ON TMVS The CIPHE is talking tough on TMVs as it renews calls on the Government to change the legislation surrounding the devices. According to the latest hospital admission statistics from NHS Digital, the most vulnerable in society continue to be at a grave risk from household scalds and burns. Admission figures show that scalds from tap water remained a significant issue for the old and young in 2018/19, with: ● 34% of scalding admissions aged nine years or under ● Nearly 19% of scalding admissions aged 60 years or over
Sadly this is not new news. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) states ‘Hot bath water is responsible for the highest number of fatal and severe scalding injuries among young children. To put it in perspective, medical professionals count bath water scalds among the worst injuries anyone can suffer. With the elderly particularly vulnerable to the effects of scalding – as they often live alone, in older homes, that feature outdated plumbing technology – the Institute is keen to see the Government extend current TMV legislation to make their use compulsory in all homes. Kevin Wellman, CIPHE CEO said, “I find it unacceptable that so many innocent people are suffering scalds and burns. The CIPHE’s perspective on this is clear. We need to reduce the risk by raising general awareness of the dangers in our homes, we need to change legislation to enforce the use of protective devices such as TMVs in all homes (not just new build), we need to educate the public on the importance of regularly maintaining these devices and we need to ensure that all those working on plumbing and heating systems are qualified and competent to do so.”
WHERE ARE TRADESPEOPLE AVERAGING £47/HOUR? The cost of hiring a tradesperson is highest in Berkshire, according to research from HaMuch.com. The research looked at the hourly cost of a builder, plumber, heating engineer, electrician, carpenter, painter, gardener, cleaner and car mechanic and how this differs across each area of the UK. The most expensive area is Newbury, Berkshire at £47 per hour. Other costly areas in the county are Reading at £43 and Bracknell Forest at £42. These areas are well above the national average, which is £31 per hour. Locksmiths are the most expensive professional by hourly rate, charging £43. Heating engineers are second at £41, followed by plumbers at £40. The cheapest area is Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales at £21 per hour. In London, the average cost of a tradesperson is £41 – higher than average but not the highest, despite the cost of housing in the city. It’s worth noting that many of those who work in the city commute from surrounding areas, while it may be that competition between tradespeople is particularly high in London, driving the price down.

Insurance claims by tradespeople affected by tool theft have increased 54% in the last two years, according to figures released by Simply Business. The data shows the average claim for stolen tools costs £1,684, while there’s also been a notable rise in the number of break-ins with no signs of damage or forced entry. Analysis of over 2,000 tool theft claims reveal the number of incidents jumped from 412 in 2016, to 893 in 2018, rising 54% overall and consistently increasing year-on-year. The research, which comes as the small business insurer launches a campaign to ‘Stamp Out Tool Theft’ once and for all, shows the South West saw the most dramatic rise in incidents (81%) followed by London (67%) and the North West (63%). Furthermore, the analysis revealed 87 different industries have fallen victim to tool theft in the last two years, showing just how widespread the issue has become. The top five affected trades for tool theft: 1 I Builders – 675 claims 2 I Carpenters – 357 claims 3 I Electricians – 258 4 I Plumbing, heating & ventilation contractors – 223 claims 5 I Joiners – 214 claims Simply Business is calling on the Government to implement greater fines for those convicted of tool theft, as well as tighter regulations on the selling of second-hand tools. The petition aims to secure 100,000 signatures for the measures to be debated in the House of Lords and can be viewed at www.rdr.link/PK001

“LACK OF TRAINING COULD DAMAGE RELATIONSHIPS” Just 39% of professionals working within the HVAC sector believe they have the opportunity to develop professionally with their current employer – despite the fact that incoming legislative changes look set to have an impact on future skills demand. That is according to research from specialist recruitment consultancy, WR HVACR. While the introduction of new laws, such as those concerning refrigeration gas emissions and the use of gas heating in new-build homes, will require a level of retraining across the sector, the survey of 5,548 employees found that only 39% of respondents believe there are opportunities to learn and grow with their existing company. In addition, just 43% said they receive sufficient training to do a good job. Despite this, workforces across the sector maintain overwhelmingly loyalty to their profession, with 90% of those polled indicating they are proud to work in the industry.

A HELPING HAND
The transition from full time work into retirement can be a difficult one, with the frustrations of boredom seeping into a life which is of sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of working in the trade. Abbie Smith sits down with retired plumber George Davenport to find out how he is now using his time to help the world’s most vulnerable.
T
here’s always going to become a point that the physical and mental aspects of working in the trades on a daily basis can prove a little too demanding, and the thought of retirement becomes more and more appealing. Though for many, the thought of dropping the tools for good can be incredibly daunting.
Despite shutting down his plumbing business when he retired 11 years ago, George Davenport has certainly kept himself busy since by becoming involved with Hope Health Action (HHA). Originally known as ‘Haiti Hospital Appeal,’ HHA is a Christian charity passionate about facilitating sustainable, life-saving health and disability care to the world’s most vulnerable.
What’s HHA all about? In 2005, drama student Carwyn Hill came across a sticky note at a Christian conference. The note was written by the then President of the Baptist Convention of Haiti (Pastor Gedeon), who was in need of a bed, having travelled to the UK and understandably underestimated the cost of accommodation. Carwyn responded to the sticky note, Pastor Gedeon accepted the invitation, and the two quickly connected. Subsequently, Carwyn and two friends, Jonnie Horner and Rodney

Name: George Davenport Wilson, were invited to Haiti. Whilst there, they were touched by the tragic and completely unnecessary death of an 11-year-old girl called Julia, who died simply due to a lack of basic health care. This stirring experience inspired Carwyn, Johnny and Rodney to start HHA. The charity was seeking help from professionals from every industry, including healthcare, management, childcare, engineering and construction. As an old family friend of the Hills, George heard of Carwyn’s story and was moved to lend his plumbing experience and knowledge to the cause.
New challenges The project progressed slowly, beginning by opening a Community Health Centre in North Haiti, which has ultimately grown into 'Hospital HCBH' – now one of the leading

hospitals in North Haiti, with over 100 beds and employing over 270 local Haitian staff. According to George, the endeavour was not without its challenges. Most notably, the equipment being used was simply not as advanced as what he and his team were used to in the UK. Most of the equipment is locally sourced once the team are in Haiti, and the pipes and filtration units were typically donated in small parts. Like a complicated puzzle, George and his team spent a great deal of time configuring the parts without any instruction. If that wasn’t enough of a challenge, without a readily accessible mains water network, the water had to be routed to the buildings from a well, as the devastating 2010 earthquake destroyed many of the existing sanitation systems. The project is ongoing, while George and the HHA team are on site to fix issues that may arise within the hospital’s delicate infrastructure, or clean the water filtration unit when necessary. As part of a long term solution to this problem, training will need to be given to local tradespeople to keep the hospital in working order, year round. Haiti is

also currently experiencing a crippling fuel crisis, with diesel being in short supply. This has had a severe effect on the HHA’s project, as whilst the hospital runs on solar power during daylight hours, at night a generator is required to keep the electricity running. In March, an incinerator was installed into the hospital, but due to staffing problems it is yet to be properly set up. George’s most recent trip will see him not only getting the incinerator into a working state, but training the staff on how to safely and hygienically use the new installation.
Although the process is both time consuming and challenging, it is clear that the HHA’s endeavours are a glowing success. The project is hoping to replicate the successes of the Hospital HCBH, as it sets its sights on expanding its efforts into Northern Africa. The size of the project means that the charity is always on the hunt for skilled tradespeople to lend their expertise. When he isn’t building hospitals in Haiti, George fills his time in the UK with a home renovation project. In his retirement, he bought a ‘fixer-upper’ in Wales that he is now renovating in his free time. According to George, despite not working for money, he is happily working at his own pace and keeping his skills sharp. George said: “Retirement left me wondering ‘what will I do now?’ Although the first few months felt like I was on holiday, after that it was easy to feel like I was not needed anymore. But working with HHA and my home renovation project has helped me avoid this feeling. Retiring is not the end of your career – it can be the start of something new!”

SPECIAL REPORT | Smart market
SMARTEN UP W
e waste more than £2.2 billion every year by unnecessarily heating our homes. This is harmful to our planet and our wallet and can be improved by making simple behavioural changes that cut energy wastage and living costs. It might seem obvious, but reminding ourselves about what energy efficiency actually means will help focus the mind of you and your customers. The goal of energy efficiency is to use less energy to achieve the same level of comfort; for example, weather compensation controls adjust the boiler output as the outside temperature changes, reducing energy wastage and therefore using less energy to maintain the required temperature. Further improvements can be made by increasing the thermal efficiency of the building, reducing heat loss through windows and doors and minimising moisture content. Energy efficiency goes hand-in-hand with energy conservation, bringing bills down even further.
Mark Krull from Logic4training looks at how installers can upsell smart technology to empower homeowners to change their behaviour, take control of their energy use and save money.
up to big savings. According to Smart Energy GB, 86% of people with a smart meter say they have changed how they do things around the house to use less energy.
Take control If the existing boiler is less than 15 years old, the installation of heating controls could save around £80 a year, as well as providing a great business opportunity for installers. Smart thermostats are the latest in temperature control technology. These devices keep a home at the optimum temperature, using algorithms and sensors to zone heating, minimising wastage. Heating can be controlled remotely, giving greater awareness of energy use, which in turn encourages good habits. Installers can add on to their original job, while ensuring customers could make potential savings of around £130 a year.
Smart meters can help
Energy and business smart
The smart meter rollout is very much part of this idea of ‘energy conservation’ – helping homeowners to reduce domestic carbon emissions by giving them more information about how much energy they use and how much their appliances cost to run. Armed with this knowledge, homeowners can make small behavioural changes that add
Installers are at the frontline of the industry and can use their position to provide value to customers while promoting their services. By educating your customers on energy savings and encouraging them to make small behavioural changes, they will save money and thank you for it, in turn putting your services on their radar.
Energy saving wins:
● Turning appliances off standby mode = £30 a year saving ● Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need = £6 a year saving ● Spend one minute less per day in the shower = £7 a year saving per person ● Replace old lightbulbs with LEDs = £35 a year saving ● Install an Eco shower head = £70 a year saving ● Install thermostats and TRVs = £80 a year saving ● Install smart heating controls = Hive claims to save £130 a year ● Double-glaze windows = save £120 a year ● Draught proof = £20 a year savings, plus the potential to turn down thermostat ● Turn down the heating by one degree = £80 a year saving ● Replace a 15 year-old boiler with a new, combi one = £300 a year saving *Figures from Energy Savings Trust

Teirnan McCorkell presenting the pipeEASY on the latest series of the BBC’s Dragon’s Den (Photo courtesy of the BBC)
NOT JUST A PIPE DREAM
Cutting around pipework is never a straightforward task, no matter how much time you have on your hands. Fortunately, Teirnan McCorkell believes he has a solution, and it’s difficult to argue now he’s convinced a dragon…
I
t’s a problem tradespeople from all walks of life have probably faced – attempting to make a neat and professional cut around existing pipework. And, as Teirnan McCorkell attests, it’s a job that is very difficult to get right every single time. “I’ve seen countless tradespeople and professional DIYers attempt it, and I’ve never seen anyone who can do a perfect job, consistently,” explains Teirnan. “I looked around for a tool that could help, but when I realised there wasn’t one in the market, I decided to have a go at designing one myself.” From here, the pipeEASY tool was born. Initially designed on a cardboard template with two standard rulers, Teirnan – who was previously in the trade until a move into the carpet fitting business – soon realised he was on to something, and started to put a little more time and investment into fully developing and testing the product out. The device is designed to act as a surface measuring tool to find the perfect centre hole of where to drill to make space for the pipework. Providing a quality finish that Teirnan believes can’t be matched on a
consistent basis via other methods, it can be used on a variety of surfaces and situations – from flooring, to exterior walls, to stone paving in the garden. Fast forward two years and Teirnan now has a successful BBC Dragon’s Den pitch under his belt, alongside an array of products and a growing presence within the industry. Sara Davies, one of the newest additions to the Den, saw plenty of future in the product, agreeing to invest £41,000 into the firm for a 30% share of the business. With the due diligence now complete, Teirnan is thrilled with the interest Sara showed.
“Tradespeople have been really impressed with pipeEASY, which is great news,” adds Teirnan. “The tool makes the job look professional, plus saves time on site, so it really is a win-win!” 18 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
“It was the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life. I’m not really a talker, and I’m really not used to giving presentations, so to be in that boardroom was a completely new experience for me. I’m obviously glad I did it though. It’s fantastic that Sara saw potential in the product, it’s been great working with her so far and I’m sure this will continue.” While Teirnan initially saw the pipeEASY as a device that would attract DIYers, he has since realised the trade’s interest, and is now beginning to make it more of a focus. The tool comes with five free standard sized pipe wedges – 10, 15, 22, 32 and 40mm – with various other sizes available upon request. As a simple addition to the usual array of tools in the van, merchants are also showing an interest in stocking the tool, with visitors demonstrating plenty of interest at the recent trade shows the pipeEASY team have attended.

TRAINING
James Clark, Training Manager at Drayton, discusses why training is so important and how it can help installers stand out from their competition.
“TOP UP ON TRAINING”
A
lthough heating engineers are likely to have their go-to favourite products to fit, customer preference can sometimes mean they are faced with having to install products they might not be familiar with. So, to ensure installers are up to date with the latest technology, training can be a key investment of both time and money.
In person Attending training sessions in person is a great way for installers to familiarise themselves with a manufacturers’ range of products. But as well as learning the ins and outs of the product and how to correctly install and service it, there are other benefits to attending training sessions. Most sessions will be hosted by trainers who are experts in their field, meaning they have years of expertise and industry knowledge they can share that extends beyond the range of products. The majority of trainers will also be up to speed on the latest legislation changes, as well as those that have been proposed for the future, so this can be a helpful way for installers to stay up to date with the latest news that might impact them. With an expert at the helm, training sessions are also the perfect chance for installers to ask any questions, whether it be about the product or the industry, as well as getting hands on with product to familiarise themselves with it
before fitting it for a customer. Likewise, one of the most beneficial aspects to attending training in person is having the opportunity to meet other professionals in the industry. Sharing insights amongst fellow installers in these social settings allows a real sense of community to be formed, encouraging participants to improve the standard of work across the country.
Online When it comes to online training, the overarching benefit is that it can often be completed at an installer’s own pace and in their own time. Many online training academies use video content as this is the easiest way to demonstrate the key elements of a product in a succinct, comprehensive way – much like a trainer would if an installer
20 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
was attending in person. To ensure installers fully understand the content, there will usually be some form of question and answer session, giving participants the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge to the test. This also ensures that only those with a good understanding pass the course and obtain the relevant certification. So, whether it’s learning about the product for the very first time or using the online training as a follow up or refresher having attended a training session in person, it’s certainly worthwhile looking at what options are available for the products installers fit daily.
What’s the benefit? As well as broadening knowledge, there are often a number of perks available once training has been complete. Some manufacturers, like Drayton, will sign you up as an accredited installer once you have completed its training, which can often help provide installers with further sales leads.

PHPI rounds up the latest training and professional development courses available for installers throughout the UK.
Vent-Axia
NICEIC Training Course
Marley Plumbing & Drainage has announced a CPD course, designed to help educate specifiers, contractors and MEP engineers on the benefits of an acoustic drainage system. Good acoustic design is becoming an increasing priority throughout the construction industry, with a number of studies having revealed the detrimental effects of unwanted noise. Poorly specified drainage systems have the potential to create excess levels of noise, whether it be airborne sound generated by wastewater flowing through pipelines, or structure-borne sound from vibrating pipework or brackets. As such, Marley Plumbing & Drainage’s latest CPD, entitled ‘The Benefits of Using an Acoustic Drainage System’, explores the issue of noise within a building’s soil and waste system and discusses how installers can work to reduce these sound levels by first considering the design of all pipes, stacks and brackets. Adam Gatrell, Technical Sales Manager at Marley Plumbing & Drainage said: “Our latest CPD will provide participants with an understanding of airborne and structure-borne sound within soil and waste systems, as well as a detailed overview on the ways in which these sound levels can be reduced, with the aim of guiding specifiers through their next project and ensuring a building’s occupants are provided with a quiet and comfortable environment. The CPD will also focus on our dBlue acoustic drainage system, which features a specially designed triple layer pipe structure and unique body bracket, making it the perfect solution for commercial or high-rise applications.”
Vent-Axia is committed to best practice and is offering its NICEIC Domestic Ventilation Training Course to installers, which is held at its head office in Crawley. The two-day course is aimed at anyone with an interest in installing ventilation systems, particularly experienced electricians, plumbers, ventilation installers and heating engineers looking to improve their knowledge and understanding of domestic ventilation systems. The course provides the necessary skills in system design, installation, testing, commissioning, handover, servicing and fault-finding of ventilation systems in accordance with the latest National Occupational Standards and Minimum Technical Competency documents. It also looks at legal requirements, why ventilation is important and the different types of ventilation available. At the end of the course, delegates will have received both theoretical and practical training, including the commissioning of a working MVHR system. The course is recognised by all Competent Person Schemes within the industry and aims to train installers to safely and competently fit, inspect and test any of the four common domestic ventilation systems: individual extract fans; passive stack ventilation systems; continuous MEV systems and continuous MVHR systems. The course also aims to train installers to commission these systems once fitted and provide documentary evidence to handover to both Building Control and the end-user. Once candidates have completed the course and enrolled with a Competent Person Scheme, such as the one run by the NICEIC, they will be able to add value and differentiate themselves from their competitors. They will also benefit from not having to notify a Building Control Body in advance of doing notifiable work, they just have to notify their work online with the Competent Person Scheme who will issue a building compliance certificate to the customer, as well as advise the relevant local authority that work has taken place. This not only saves installers time but building control charges will not be payable and installers can offer a complete service to their customers.

í˘ą While we couldn’t possibly cover all the amazing stories of installers going above and beyond this year, we’ve rounded up a few that have caught our eye in 2019!
TOP STORIES 1 I HEAT FOR GOOD
Back in mid-April, the Heat for Good collective, including 11 heating engineers from around the UK, installed a free heating system to the Clayton Rugby League Club in Bradford. The amateur rugby league club from West Yorkshire, founded in 1947, received a substantial free makeover to its clubhouse, care of a “Community Kindnessâ€? initiative sponsored by Viessmann and organised by the Pulse 1 and Pulse 2 radio stations. 11 installers gave up their time for free to ďŹ t a Viessmann boiler, as well as radiators, a pump, press ďŹ ttings and a low loss header. In addition, volunteer tradespeople from around the region, as well as an army of local residents and rugby club members, pulled together under the “Community Kindnessâ€? project to provide a new roof and toilet facilities, as well as painting and decorating, industrial cleaning, asbestos consultancy and skip hire. Heat for Good is an open membership charity install programme, comprising heating industry suppliers and installers, and administered by Viessmann
on behalf of all parties. Its previous project was at Let’s Play, a charity providing after-school and holiday activities for over 100 disabled children in Oxfordshire.

2 I HATS OFF! In what is now becoming a mainstay in the social media calendar, Lee Brown of Peak Heating has once again put together #thegreatTwitterhatoff. Beginning on the 4 October, the competition is still going on at the time of writing, but in summary, Lee asks the industry to send him as many warm hats as possible. Hats are then pitted against each other in a Twitter vote, with the favourite eventually winning a few prizes. The main reason behind doing all this, however, is that Lee then sends all the hats to a local homeless street charity, in an
effort to support those less fortunate during the winter. Hats off to you, Lee!
3 I CHARITY
TWEETATHON
In another social media feel good story, the trades got together on 1 October for the second annual #TradesTalk charity Tweetathon. 24 hours of mayhem and merriment followed, all to raise money for the Rainy Day Trust – the construction charity supporting tradespeople and their families in times of need. It was a hugely entertaining event, with guest hosts taking over each hour and featuring everything from eating mealworms to ‘Stars in the Trades’ – yes, this concept was based on Stars in their Eyes. Most importantly however, over ÂŁ2,200 was raised for a tremendous cause.
INDUSTRY COMES TOGETHER When Simon Antonelli, a Plumber from the West Country, was diagnosed with cancer back in April, he realised he would no longer be able to work and was having little luck in sourcing a buyer for his much loved van and tools.
í˘ł Step in the social media community, which raised over the target of ÂŁ20,000 for the cause in just 10 days. Installers, manufacturers and industry representatives donated in their droves, leaving Simon overwhelmed with the response. Indeed, to see the trade display such compassion and generosity for an installer going through such a horrific time – and someone most have never met – warmed the heart of even the most cynical among us. Unfortunately, Simon lost his battle with cancer in August, and all of PHPI’s thoughts go out to his family at what has been an incredibly difficult time for them.
And there’s one more social media initiative set for this month, as the @GasManGod Christmas auction returns in December. Prize donations are provided from across the industry, with all proceeds going to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Last year raised over £9,000, so be sure to get involved on Twitter! With ďŹ ve ranges in a choice of colours and designs, Fibo’s wall panels claim to be the smart way to transform kitchens and bathrooms. The panels are up to ďŹ ve times quicker to install than tiles, and can be ďŹ tted to walls, studs or even existing tiles. The company believes the style is growing in popularity throughout the UK. We visited the company’s HQ in Norway this year, to ďŹ nd out all about the improvements in design and choice, meaning there is now a wide range of high-quality textures and ďŹ nishes on the market to suit the style of most bathrooms. Features include intricate tounge-and-groove locking systems and narrow 3D channels to replicate grouting, giving the authentic look and feel of tiles. The panels are 2.4m high and available in 600, 900 and 1200mm widths, with proďŹ le edges in white PVC or aluminium. www.rdr.link/PK011

5 I RSS TILEMASTER Tiling tool The RSS Tilemaster is said to be the only adjustable guide that also allows you to ďŹ x across window heads and other openings. The kit comes with three sets of feet and various lengths to get you around an average bathroom in two repositions. According to Roger Bisby, it has enough clearance to get over pipes and minor obstructions, and can be adjusted for use along a bath and kitchen worktops. When it comes to the heads above windows, there is a nifty pair of sliding supports with rubber heads, which can be wound in hard against the reveals. www.rdr.link/PK013
6 I WILO
Stratos-Maxo Wilo believes the smart pump of the future should offer greater efficiency, connectivity and comfort, while also featuring an intuitive user interface that makes installation and operation easier for installers. The pump is said to have improved energy efficiency thanks to the combination of energy-saving functions (No-Flow Stop, for instance), and new control functions, such as Dynamic Adapt plus and Multi-Flow Adaptation to improve system efficiency. The pump also features communication interfaces, such as Bluetooth, for connection to mobile devices and direct pump networking for multiple pump control via Wilo Net. www.rdr.link/PK014
7 I ADEY
í˘ˇ
MagnaClean Professional3 Sense
Adey has created what it believes to be the industry’s ďŹ rst Wi-Fi enabled magnetic ďŹ lter. The company says that its development has been designed to not only provide high performance system protection, but also predict potential system problems, as well as provide connected preventative maintenance. Using Adey’s Sense technology, the ďŹ lter detects the level of magnetite collected, preventing ongoing system damage by alerting installers, so that problems can be treated before it is too late. It takes a reading every 12 hours for the first two weeks after installation or servicing, then once every five days, helping to prolong battery life for up to two years. This information is then communicated to the installer through the Adey ProClub App. www.rdr.link/PK015
í˘ś
Van racking solutions Using its experience of van racking and the kit, parts and tools you need to carry, Bott Smartvan has created its pre-designed van racking packages, speciďŹ c for plumbers and installers. The team offers conversions for a wide range of models. Once users have selected which van they use, there are both standard and premium solutions on offer with differing price points. Key components include universal power tool holders, removable boxes for stock of small parts and trough shelving with dividers to create the size of space you need. Meanwhile, the premium offerings include in shelf mats and non-slip flooring, to protect products from sliding around in transit. www.rdr.link/PK016
9 I WORCESTER BOSCH
Greenstar Lifestyle Design has become front-and-centre of most homes. To keep up with this trend and after years of development and direct feedback from hundreds of installers, Worcester Bosch launched the Greenstar 8000 Lifestyle range this year. The direct replacement of the Greenstar CDi Classic, the 8000 Life keeps all of the tried and tested while improving on all the key installer touchpoints for easier installation, servicing and maintenance. The Style is the premium option, with intuitive full colour and text boiler control display, as well as options in either black or white. Available in combi, system and regular, the collection features outputs between 30 and 50kW and has a 1:10 burner modulation. www.rdr.link/PK017

10 I SNICKERS WORKWEAR
37.5 Technology fleeces Promising to keep wearers warm, the new 37.5 technology fleeces from Snickers Workwear offer styles for both professional tradesmen and women. Providing ventilation and moisture transport, the eeces are designed to keep installers working comfortably throughout the day. The 37.5 technology fabric in the Fleece is a quick-drying material that captures and releases moisture vapour, as well as offering visibility, exibility, durability and ventilation. According to well-respected PHPI product testers, it feels much lighter than you expect, but is definitely still warm. There’s also plenty of stretch. www.rdr.link/PK018

HEATING & RENEWABLES
Every li t t LeheLps W
hile it’s increasingly common practice for customer service lines to be diverted to external call centres, where hold music reigns supreme, Worcester Bosch appears to understand the importance of maintaining a reliable support network for its installer community. With over 40 technical advisors upholding a less-than 20 second average response time and taking around 500,000 calls per year, the company clearly believes this forms a vital part of its service. Speaking to members of the team, installers will be reassured to know that almost all of them have been on the tools at some point before now. This became instantly clear as we listened in on real time calls, where many would be doing what can only be described as some kind of mime-like-act to an imaginary boiler in thin air, as they tried to work out which stage of the process their customer was describing. And, if this doesn’t work, the team are able to walk to the neighbouring showroom and literally play around with the various boiler models themselves.
As manufacturers continue to realise the benefits of having a knowledgeable support mechanism in place for installer queries, PHPI spent the morning with the Worcester Bosch technical support team, to understand how they can help. Worcester manufactures a variety of different heating solutions, so the team ensures there is specialist support staff operating at all times. Some will be experts in the gas-fired models, while others will specifically deal with heat pump or oil related enquiries to guarantee all bases are covered. As well as ex-heating engineers, there are also ex-electricians and spares support staff available. All of this means that the technical support team holds around an 80% hit rate of successfully dealing with calls, according to the business. Annual refresher training covers
a wide array of different scenarios, and very often those calls that are unsuccessful are likely due to the problem being with a different issue within the system, which may not be Worcester related – i.e. a heating control or TRV that isn’t playing ball. Crucially, it is highlighted to all members of the team to not ‘blag their way’ through a call, meaning installers should expect responses to be well considered and thought out. Sitting in on some of the conservations, it becomes clear this is the case. While some scenarios can be dealt with almost instantaneously, others inevitably take some more consideration. Worcester’s advisors have full access to every boiler and control manual that the business has manufactured over the years, but problems are sometimes best solved with teamwork, as the installer and advisor work together to solve the problem. As one engineer commented: “It’s almost like having an experienced colleague by your side, just not physically!” Over the course of the morning, queries ranged from a timeclock issue when wiring a thermostat, to a diverter valve fault. Each call was responded to immediately, though installers may need to be a little patient during heating season, and the office is open from seven in the morning, until eight at night. With a number of new boiler launches in 2019, there’s bound to be a few differences in installer touchpoints, so engineers should be pleased to hear that Worcester looks set to continue to place a great deal of importance on its support network at present.

BARN TO RUN PHPI follows a Grant Uflex underfloor heating system installation in a barn conversion in North Yorkshire.
E
arlier this year, the project of converting a barn into a three-bedroom home got underway on a farm located in the surrounds of Thirsk in North Yorkshire. The property is 200 square metres in size and incorporates a large kitchen and office space, alongside the other living areas, bedrooms and bathrooms. The installation was carried out by Oliver Carter, of Oliver Carter Plumbing & Heating, based in Bedale. The heat source is a gas boiler and Grant’s Uflex wet underfloor heating system was chosen as the most appropriate choice of heat emitter to effectively distribute heat evenly throughout the property. Ideally suited for these types of projects, the Uflex underfloor heating system is embedded within the floor construction. Utilising a self-adhesive edging strip and floor membrane, the 16mm Uflex pipe is positioned and stapled into place before a flow screed is laid and left to dry for up to 30 days. Not only are all of the pipework, manifolds and components supplied by Grant UK, but the company’s Design and Specification Team were also on hand to assist with the product specification and full system design – something that Oliver Carter found of use
28 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
“We already have another couple of underfloor jobs in the next few months which will be simpler and smaller in size and for both, we will be using the Grant Uflex system.” with this installation. “This was my first time installing Grant’s Uflex underfloor system and it was good to work with,” says Oliver. “The layout of the property, with its U shape, made the job slightly more difficult for the pipe runs and positioning of the manifolds, but the hard work was worth it. “The manifolds look high quality and well made, and I am very familiar with the Wilo pumps fitted with them too. Even though the Uflex pipe is plastic, it is easy to work with and does not spring back. The pipe is easy to bend, very flexible and when fitted, looks very smart. In particular, I like the large rolls that the pipe is available in upon supply. Having

FLAMCO XSTREAM
THREE OF A KIND
PHPI heads to The Shard to learn all about the new product launches from Flamco.
M
ore than five years of development is said to have contributed to Flamco’s latest line of products released in the UK, including the XStream, the Side-Clean, and a new range of expansion vessels – the Flexcon Premium range.
XStream The Flamco XStream reportedly ensures there is up to 15% less energy consumption by the heating system, as well as the introduction of automatic venting to combat wear and tear to the system with a lower chance of a breakdown. The ECO/MAX mode allows the unit to operate at maximum power to remove dirt and air from the system, before turning the system down to ECO to ensure constant activity but with a low resistance and pressure drop, which means the pump has to work less hard. Available in three different units – XStream Vent (air separator), XStream Clean (dirt separator) and XStream Vent-Clean (air and dirt separator) – the entire range is equipped with a 360° rotating connection which makes it possible to install in horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines. The unit is supplied with an integral insulation jacket which ensures heat losses are kept to a minimum, as well as an
integrated service indicator which displays when the filter was last flushed. With the XStream Vent, the service indicator shows when the system was last vented in the MAX mode. This air and dirt separation system comes with a 15-year warranty, highlighting the company’s confidence in the longevity of the new unit.
SideFlow Clean To protect against dirt that may collect in central heating and cooling systems, the SideFlow Clean filter is suitable for installations in the commercial, industrial and utilities sectors. It has a maximum working pressure of 16 bar, is suitable for system capacities of up to 120,000 litres and system power outputs of up to 10 megawatts, and can also be fitted to existing installations. The screw-on top allows the installer to easily remove both the magnet holder and

the bag filter for cleaning or replacement, while it is also possible to mix in glycol or to add cleaning or protection agents. The SideFlow Clean includes four bag filters and comes with a five-year warranty.
Flexcon Premium The Flexcon Premium range features a plastic membrane for expansion vessels made of thermoplastic polyolefin, which is said to make the product much more sustainable in terms of environmental performance and durability, while maintaining a high quality. It also provides raw materials and energy savings, and offers a 15-year guarantee. In other respects too, the range is said to score highly in terms of sustainability. The new membrane is much lighter, requiring up to 50% less material, resulting in a large reduction of CO2 emissions. The life cycle of these expansion vessels has also been made to be as sustainable as possible. Cardboard packaging has replaced polystyrene, and user manuals have been optimised by being printed on FSC certified paper.

HEATING & RENEWABLES
PHPI catches up with Stelrad to find out how the company is supporting its installer base.
A QUESTION OF SUPPORt
Time to train
Everyone has to think carefully about how they use their time, and installers are no exception when it comes to training. A day in a training course is a day they’re not earning money and at Stelrad, there’s an understanding of this that has seen the company introduce a different way of providing training – by simply taking the training to the installer. The Stelrad Academy has undertaken more than 200 training visits around the UK so far this year and is coming to a merchant near you soon, assures the company. The courses on offer help to inform and educate participants in relation to what to look for from their radiator selection and to support in any queries of when they are installing units. Attendees will also receive a certificate to demonstrate their further commitment.
Calculations made easy In particular, installers are steered towards the easy to use free heat loss calculator and radiator sizing software programmes available via the Stelrad website. Simply open the system on the website and work your way through it:
1 I Insert the relevant information needed – i.e. room dimensions, exterior walls, glazing, what is above and below the room 2 I Choose from your preferred radiator range – you can choose from standard panel models, such as Stelrad’s Compact range, or any from the decorative/designer ranges, if preferred 3 I The system will then offer you a selection that is designed to meet your needs 4 I If there are any additional complexities to the property, a more advanced version of the system is available at www.starsapp.co.uk
32 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
All calculations in the system are based on Delta-T50° in accordance with BS EN442.
All about Vita There is also a fully kitted out training van travelling around the country giving installers the opportunity to learn more about the Stelrad Vita Series. The company believes the range has transformed radiator buying in the UK, and brand specialists are on hand for installers to ask questions about every aspect of selecting, sizing and fitting these popular radiators. The Vita Series featured in the training van comprises a wide range of options with

bespoke colour finishes available. The Vita Compact Vertical, Vita Column Vertical, Vita Deco Vertical and Vita Plan Vertical are also available to view, for those looking for a stylish choice in a smaller space.
Loyalty pays Training is just one benefit Stelrad offers its installer customers, having also recently launched its Installer Loyalty Club. “We’ve been contemplating what else we might be able to do to show our gratitude to installers and the result is the new Stelrad Loyalty Club,” says Stelrad’s Chris Harvey. “It’s a simple concept – installers buy our products, they register as members of the Stelrad Loyalty Club, they upload their invoices for the products they have bought and in return receive 10 points for every £100 they spend. They can redeem their points for rewards in the rewards catalogue, choosing from branded clothing and similar items, or they can save the points and exchange them for product if they prefer. “We really hope installers will welcome this attempt to give something back to them. The rewards include options like fleece jackets, T-shirts and trousers, and even hand towels to take on jobs with you – all things that will be helpful day-to-day. Take a closer look at the website and see for yourself – don’t forget to sign up whilst you’re there!”

HEATING & RENEWABLES
BOUNDARY LINE
The HETAS technical team often receives questions from registered installers about how to identify suitable hearth materials and mark out hearth boundaries. Calvin May, Technical Standards Manager at HETAS, provides the answers.
Hearth suitability The starting point for identifying the type of hearth that can be used can usually be determined by the appliance that’s being installed. Only appliances that have been tested and verified not to heat the floor surface beneath them to more than 100˚C are suitable to be installed on a hearth made from a single sheet of non-combustible material of a minimum 12mm thickness. Other appliances that do not meet this must be installed on a full constructional hearth that’s a minimum 125mm thick. Therefore, it’s critical that the first step in deciding the suitability of hearth material must always be the installer’s assessment of the appliance and referencing the manufacturer’s installation instructions to confirm this. A constructional hearth is normally formed as part of the building structure and made
from either masonry or concrete. However, if there are combustible materials underneath, they must be separated from the top surface of the hearth by 250mm of solid masonry, or by an air gap of a minimum of 50mm. For a more decorative effect, installers can finish a constructional hearth with a superimposed hearth to sit wholly on top of the floor surface, and provide the necessary demarcation zone. We believe that single sheet hearths are sometimes referred to as a superimposed hearth, but this is incorrect and can lead to a misunderstanding of what’s required.
Marking the zone Measurements given in ADJ Diagram 26 (a) Fireplace Recess are shown below:
Key 1. Front of appliance A. At least 150mm 2. Single sheet hearth B. At least 225mm for (with a clearly marked closed aplliances or perimeter) 300mm for open 3. Constructional hearth aplliances specifically (complying with designed for use with measurements in ADL their front open diagram 24)
The upper surface of any hearth provides a zone around the appliance that is visually apparent to building occupants. The purpose of this zone is to warn occupants that they are near a hot appliance and to take care. It also discourages the fitting of any combustible floor finishes or the placement of other materials, such as rugs, stored logs or wicker baskets, which may be adversely affected by heat, falling embers or hot ash. Certain appliances for burning wood and/or solid mineral fuel, such as stoves or open fires are obviously very hot when in use. Therefore, installers must ensure that hearth boundaries are as set out in Approved Document J for fireplace recesses and freestanding appliances. For example, the designated hearth zone requires clearances of 150mm to the sides and rear, and 225mm to the front for a closed freestanding appliance. Where appliances are cooler on their outer surface and the risk of ash or ember spillage
is minimal, such as independent heating boilers, some range cookers and some pellet fired appliances, the required hearth dimensions can be reduced to those prescribed by the appliance manufacturer. In certain circumstances it may also be allowable to place heat sensitive items within this zone, as the zone is really only intended as a free area for access for servicing purposes. In any such case, it is essential to read and adhere to any appliance manufacturer’s recommendations.
Beware of modifications We recognise that not every installation is straightforward, and we particularly encourage installers to be mindful of compliance, especially when dealing with hearths that may have been modified in some way, or where fireplaces are being brought back in to use. In these instances, the hearth base may have been structurally changed or may have a damp-proof membrane underneath, so guidance should be sought as prescribed within Approved Document J. In every case, HETAS helps provide installers with expert advice and clarity on hearth boundary compliance.

DISTRICT LINE
District heating is becoming an ever more popular and efficient solution to heating in residential and commercial developments. However, with these new changes comes the need for heating engineers to educate themselves on the installation, operation and capabilities of such systems. Here, Jonathan Moran, Business Development Manager at Warmafloor, provides the lowdown on all things district heating.
T
he value of the district heating market is currently estimated to be in the region of £70 million, with 55,000 units being installed per year in the UK. However, with gas boilers being banned in new homes from 2025 in a bid to tackle emissions, the Government has identified that the economic potential of district heating could provide up to 14% of heat demand by 2030, compared to 2% at present. The Department of Energy and Climate Change also stated in a recent infrastructure investment report that heat networks are now recognised as the UK’s third major energy network.
What is district heating? An alternative to traditional gas boilers, district heating provides a communal solution to heating. Most commonly used in high-rise apartment blocks, a centralised boiler and heat pump distributes heat through underground pipework into multiple dwellings at once. The heat source is then distributed through individual heat interface units (HIUs) located within each home. Although the infrastructure is seemingly more complicated than traditional gas boilers,
having to lay pipework connecting the developments to the centralised boiler, the installation process is simple. As no gas is present, there are no requirements for heating installers to have gas safety checks, meaning plumbers can be trained to install these units – a great bonus given the increasing numbers of homes that will undoubtably need to use district heating in the future.
How is it different to traditional heating? There are two major differences between traditional gas boilers and district heating: efficiency and safety. Firstly, distributing heat through large, centralised boilers is always going to be more efficient. With a constant supply of heat, which the user can choose when and when not to use, it is far more cost and energy efficient than heating up smaller tanks throughout the day. Secondly, district heating provides a safer heating solution for large-scale developments. In high-rise apartment blocks, for example, it would be unadvisable to install individual gas boilers in every property. With no gas supply in the home, district heating dramatically lowers the risk of gas ignition.

A Warmafloor solution To support the growing district heating industry, we’ve created Calefa, a heat interface unit (HIU). Featuring a four-option control bypass, we believe Calefa is the most efficient unit available on the market – confirmed by independent BESA testing. The system’s ‘keep warm’ function can be set to 24/7, off, schedule mode – where the user sets certain times for it to come on – or auto mode.
“Most commonly used in high-rise apartment blocks, a centralised boiler and heat pump distributes heat through underground pipework into multiple dwellings at once, via individual heat interface units (HIUs) located within each home.”
When switched to auto mode, the smart system monitors and learns usage patterns in the home, gaining accurate insights after just two weeks. This ensures that hot water will always be quickly available at key usage times, while reducing overall energy consumption. Having been engineered in collaboration with our parent company, Wavin, the unit can also be linked to our underfloor heating control system, Sentio, allowing for app-based domestic hot water control.
District or electric: options for the future As the proposed gas ban in 2025 looms
closer, it leaves two major options for heating engineers when working on a project: suggest an electric boiler, or opt into a district heating system. However, given the fact that the national grid simply doesn’t have the capability to power every home with an electric boiler, now is the time for professionals across the whole industry to recognise the many benefits of district heating and HIUs and prepare for their implementation.

ON THE RISE
The electric water heating market is growing at a steady rate. With new products continuing to be regularly introduced, Victoria Gutierrez, Head of Marketing at Ariston, outlines the importance of using only the highest quality unvented electric water heaters, especially those equipped with anti-legionella components.
S
mall unvented hot water heaters are ideal for a variety of applications, including commercial properties, building sites, kitchens, bathrooms and offices. However, with the electric water heating market continuing to expand, there are some products being introduced that may provide a cause for concern. This is not just applicable in terms of manufacturing and build quality, but also health and safety credentials. The latter point is particularly pertinent, especially when considering the risk of possible illnesses and contaminants, such as legionella. Earlier this year, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) noted that cases of Legionnaires’ disease are on the rise, so urged installers to be vigilant when it comes to potential sources of legionella bacteria. The bacteria are most commonly found in water and, according to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), multiply where temperatures are between 20-45°C and nutrients are available. The bacteria are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C. Awareness of legionella is important in many walks of modern life; for example, landlords providing residential accommodation are required to consider, assess and control the risks of exposure to legionella to their tenants. Similarly,
employers and people responsible for public premises have a duty to carry out legionella risk assessments, regulate materials and appoint a competent person to manage onsite water systems.
Prevent and protect Now, when it comes to unvented electric water heaters, the best option for preventing the formation of legionella is water temperature control. This has led to high quality water heaters, such as Ariston’s Andris Lux Eco, being produced with functions that, once a month, automatically increase the water temperature up to 65°C for a 60-minute period. This eliminates legionella bacteria and guarantees the healthiness of the water. Ariston’s software also ensures the anti-legionella cycle is performed again after 30 days, if the device has not reached 60°C during that timeframe. In the event of the unit reaching 60°C, the anti-legionella cycle
‘resets’ and a fresh count begins. In addition, electric water heaters should be constructed from corrosion-resistant materials, which prevent excessive scale formation and do not encourage or support microbial growth. Connected taps or showerheads also need to be regularly checked and cleaned, as any cooling water left in them will also be capable of breeding legionella bacteria. High quality unvented water heaters offer plenty of other benefits, particularly in properties when hot water is required but there is either no DHW system or the current system cannot be expanded. Compact units are easy to install and maintain, while also providing excellent space saving credentials. They are also capable of providing hot water at any time of day to suit a property’s needs, with some models further boosting efficiency credentials via specialised energy saving settings. The future of the UK water heating market looks bright, with AMA Research predicting an increase of around 10% between 2017 and 2021. However, installers need to remain vigilant when selecting small electric water heaters, opting for premium models adhering to the latest regulations.

PLUMBING & BATHROOMS
A BRAVE NEW WORLD With the latest in the bathroom industry discussed at the recent Bathroom Manufacturer’s Association (BMA) Conference in October, PHPI rounds up what installers need to know. he 2019 Bathroom & Kitchen Business Conference was hailed a resounding success by delegates, who gathered at the Carden Park Hotel, Cheshire on 8 October. The conference featured a programme of speakers on a range of topics, all aimed at providing valuable information about how to achieve business success during the challenging and uncertain times that prevail. With a running theme of ‘Brave New World’, topics included law and compliance, the potential implications of Brexit and a look at the existing and developing trends within the sector.
T
Keele University, designed to demystify what it means to be compliant. The tool is aimed primarily at professionals within the bathroom industry, including installers, guiding them through a process that will help to identify what is required to confirm compliance. “The initiatives we have announced will play an important role in helping us drive forward the compliance agenda,” added Tom. “We will also be raising awareness with a series of workshops and seminars, aimed at installers and other stakeholders, so that they better understand their responsibilities and can support our campaign.

Communication
Incoming BMA CEO Tom Reynolds laid out bold plans to tackle non-compliance in the bathroom industry at a Compliance Seminar, held the day before the Conference. Tom promised that the BMA was determined to ramp up the noise on the compliance issue, educating consumers and stakeholders as well as lobbying government in order to break through the myths and lack of understanding about the level of non-compliance. “We will make our voices heard so that we can create a level playing field and eradicate those that continue to flout the law and put end users at risk,” said Tom. The seminar included a preview of a new online tool developed in partnership with
Kate Trotter, Head of Trends at Inside Trends, discussed how technology can feel daunting to the kitchens and bathrooms industry, yet can actually play into the hands of installers looking to grow their businesses. Through social media channels and e-newsletters, it is now easier than ever for manufacturers to directly communicate with professional installers. Many are building relationships by relaunching or developing loyalty schemes – Aqualisa and Bristan are two recent examples of this – and also by giving installers access to website builders, where links between the brand and professional can continue to grow. While this has obvious benefits to the
manufacturer, Kate indicated that installers should be looking to develop relationships with favoured brands, which can result in incentives, kickbacks and a much closer understanding of the products they are fitting on a daily basis. Kate also demonstrated how the professional installer should expect business to continue to grow in the coming years. According to Inside Trends research, just 14% of consumers will buy and fit bathroom products themselves, while this is expected to drop ever further. With many more rented properties, tenants and landlords are unlikely to have the interest or time to fit products, turning to trained installers, instead. A ‘Brave New World’ it may be, but it would appear that bathroom manufacturers and consumers will continue to place a great deal of emphasis on installers as we enter 2020.

ALL CHANGE
As innovations in plumbing and heating continue, installers must not rest on their laurels if they are to keep pace with changes in the industry, explains Nigel Sanger, Divisional Director Technical Support at RWC.
I
f you were to look back at plumbing and heating practices over the years, you’ll see that the industry has changed tremendously. Exposed pipework was accepted as the standard 40 years ago, copper was the go-to material for pipework, and underfloor heating (UFH) was near non-existent. Now though, pipework needs to be hidden behind the wall, copper is being challenged by push-fit plumbing solutions and UFH is also increasingly gaining popularity. There are other changes too, especially with the use of valve technology to meet different building and occupant needs. The Internet of Things (IOT) and smart technologies are impacting the way people are managing domestic heating, while sustainability agendas and legislation look to change the boiler market in the near future. With so much changing, installers must be ready to adapt, and have the right tools, materials and know-how to meet the market needs. With that in mind, it’s important to look at the leading trends and how these could affect the way installers go about their jobs.
Looking up One of the biggest trends in construction is high-rise buildings – cities like Birmingham, Manchester and London are booming with smart new high-rise apartments, office blocks and multi-use spaces. With 510 high-rise towers in London’s pipeline alone, installers must be able to plumb these buildings in efficient and cost-effective ways,
44 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
especially as these large, commercially orientated projects run to tight deadlines. For example, ensuring a safe, sustainable and metered water supply for every apartment is a key requisite of high-rise buildings. Ideally a number of valves such as a stop valve, pressure reducing valve (PRV), double check valve, and a water meter are often plumbed into airing cupboards on each floor. However, with more apartments squeezed into tighter footprints, installers are being asked to install these products in smaller spaces. Naturally, this increases the complexity of the job, especially when having to connect all the different products in such confined spaces.
044_PHPI_DEC19_Layout 1 04/11/2019 15:31 Page 45
PLUMBING & BATHROOMS
This is where innovative products such as Reliance Valves’ Tenant Valve Plus is highly beneficial to the installer. This valve combines all the above functions into one compact, self-contained unit. The valve also comes with a dual reading pressure gauge/test point and a connection point for the optional addition of a Class ‘A’ water meter. Alternatively, an adaptor is available to fit a Class ‘D’ water meter. Keeping in mind future maintenance and servicing, all components of Tenant Valves can also be easily accessed from one side and they come with an insulating cover to prevent condensation.
UFH on the rise With gas boilers set to be phased out and banned from use in new build homes from 2025, low carbon heat pumps are in the pipeline as a solution to replace them. Both GSHPs and ASHPs don’t always work well with traditional convection radiators. Traditional radiators need to run at temperatures between 70-80°C to effectively heat a room. To get this level of heat from heat pumps, the compressor would need to work at a rate that will no longer allow efficient energy production. Heat pumps are most efficient with heating water up to around 35-40°C. To make these pumps compatible with radiators sustainably, the radiators would need to be much larger – around roughly six times their standard size. You may be thinking, “why can’t the radiator just be double the size, to account for the halved temperature?” The answer is that when a radiator’s average surface temperature is 70°C in a room heated to 20°C, there is a 50°C difference. However, if you drop the average surface temperature of the radiator to 35°C, you only have a 15°C difference. The heat then becomes reluctant to leave the radiator, and the room does not heat up. Having radiators six times their typical size is also not realistic or practical, so the most effective alternative is to pair heat pumps with UFH.
“With so much changing, installers must be ready to adapt, and have the right tools, materials and know-how to meet the market needs.”
UFH, in effect, is a great alternative for radiators, especially as it is hidden beneath the floor, offering much more living space. With wet UFH, the system only needs to run between 35-40°C to heat up the water in the pipework and transfer the heat into the room. As we move into a low carbon future, UFH projects are likely to gain popularity and installers should look to embrace this technology to meet the expected demand. RWC’s John Guest Underfloor heating brand offers a whole suite of UFH solutions to complete any new build or retro-fit installation efficiently. We also offer a free CAD design and estimation service to assist installers with selecting the best system for their project.
Flexible in mindset Joining pipework using push-fit fittings is becoming more and more popular, especially in new build construction. This is partly due to education around the health risks associated with fumes from soldering and hot works. Not just this, but developers and building owners are in some cases banning hot works altogether, as naked flames from blowtorches in tight spaces is a fire hazard. However, that’s not to say copper is on its way out altogether. Joining copper pipework together can still be done just as effectively through push-fit fittings, such as those offered by RWC’s JG Speedfit and SharkBite brands. With fittings available in all conventional sizes, a leak-free seal can be created in a fraction of time. We offer all-round push-fit solutions compatible with both plastic and copper pipes. Our SharkBite brass push-fit fittings can help with connecting pipework to the boiler in airing cupboards, and JG Speedfit plastic push-fit fittings and pipe are highly efficient for flexible behind the wall and UFH installations. Our complementary range of push-fit fittings, water control valves and pipes offer a safe, easy and efficient system to complete any installation from boiler to the point of use, all with the same RWC quality guaranteed. With fast changing innovative technologies, installers should be more open to adapt and adopt new practices. This can help open doors for new commercial avenues and revenue streams, while also offering a futureproofed solution to their customers.

! t h Rig Ken Vance, Training Manager at Salamander Pumps, advises on how to avoid five common pitfalls during the installation of shower pumps. 1 I SOLDER BEFORE INSTALLATION Flux residue on the pump or the hose reacts with moisture particles in the air, having a corrosive effect on the pump. Gradually this can cause pin-prick holes and cracks in the product, resulting in water leaks. It's important not to attempt to protect the pump and its hoses during the sweating process simply by covering it with some form of material, as this can be ineffective due to the spitting of the flux. To ensure the flux avoids all contact with the pump and its hoses, the best method is to ensure all solder joints are completed and flux residues removed prior to the pump connection. To do this, ensure all fittings are in the correct place and ready to be soldered, before then removing the pump and hoses and placing them a distance away while the soldering is completed. Only after this phase
twisting, or placing excess strain on the hose can cause problems with the water flow, causing the pump to run dry, so it’s crucial that the hose is fitted as straight as is possible.

is finished should the pump be re-introduced to the fitting and secured into place.
2 I DON’T BEND HOSES MORE THAN 30-35 DEGREES Due to the noise-reducing, anti-vibration design of Salamander’s hoses, it’s important that the hoses are not bent more than 30-35 degrees during installation, if at all. Bending,

It’s vital to use the correct hot water connection during shower pump installations to reduce the amount of air entering the pump from the hot water cylinder. Having an aerated supply of water to a pump, showers and other outlets can cause a whole host of problems, including unnecessary, and perhaps sudden, fluctuations in temperature, increased noise levels, accelerated degrading of the pump’s internal workings and cavitation, which can lead to an eventual leak and a premature breakdown of the pump. There are various flanges available for a shower pump installation, including a Surrey Flange (such as Salamander’s ‘S’ Flange), a Warix Flange, and a Non-Stop Essex Flange. It’s therefore crucial to check the fitting guide ahead of installation to ensure an appropriate flange is installed.

PLUMBING & BATHROOMS
The Surrey and Warix flanges are both top entry flanges, meaning that they screw onto the hot draw off connection on the dome of a standard type hot water cylinder. In comparison, the Non-Stop Essex flange is a side entry flange, which requires drilling into the side of the cylinder. This flange is best for when a pump needs to be situated above the hot water cylinder. Some shower pumps To watch a video don’t necessarily need a guide, go to flange to be fitted. Provided www.rdr.link/ the pump is installed at the PK035 base of the hot water cylinder, and the cold-water tank is stored in the loft, they can be teed from the first tee on the downward hot water leg.
“To ensure the flux avoids all contact with the pump and its hoses, the best method is to ensure all solder joints are completed and flux residues removed prior to the pump connection.”
WATCH!
4 I ENSURE THE THERMOSTAT IS BELOW 65 DEGREES On directly heated cylinders, it’s essential that the water temperature is set to 65 degrees to avoid any damage to the pump. In an
indirectly heated cylinder, a blending valve must be installed to bring the water temperature down to 65 degrees. It’s also important to ensure that the valve is big
enough to allow the volume of water that you are going to use to pass through without too much restriction.
5 I COLD WATER STORAGE It’s important to make sure that the house is storing enough cold water for the shower; 227 litres or 50 gallons is normally adequate for most shower applications. However, if you intend to run more than one bathroom, then you need to allow 227 litres for each bathroom and 136 litres for each shower room or en-suite.

THE SOF T APPROACH
Kevin Ray, H&V Portfolio Manager at BEAMA, busts common water softener myths and explains how adding them to your portfolio can help strengthen customer relationships.
F
or installers working in such a competitive sector, building strong relationships with customers is crucial to ensure repeat business. One of the best ways to build trust and set you apart from other installers is by providing expert advice on a number of issues. One such problem which affects millions of customers throughout many parts of the UK is hard water, which is created when extra calcium and magnesium – picked up by fresh rainwater as it travels through the ground – are heated and deposit themselves as limescale. This results in a number of issues including blocked up shower heads, damaged clothes and ruined appliances, meaning homeowners have to continually purchase cleaning products and spend time removing the limescale build up. What’s more, every 1.6mm of scale results in a 12% loss in heat transfer which leads to increased bills, making hard water a costly problem. The issues associated with hard water and limescale can, however, be completely eradicated if water softeners are fitted.
Providing the solution Being able to provide advice and present a solution to the problems caused by hard water will position you as an expert on the issue, helping to build a strong relationship with the end user. As a result, it’s important to ensure you have a thorough understanding of how water softeners work. Put simply, a water softener passes water through a container which houses thousands of tiny beads, which attract and retain the calcium and magnesium from the hard water. A lack of available information on water softeners has, however, led to a number of falsely constructed myths going unchallenged, making it difficult for installers to provide accurate advice to homeowners.
Water softener myths It’s a common misconception that water softeners don’t work well with new boilers and central heating systems, when in fact a unit can actually be fitted with any boiler. A water softener installation must comply with BS 14743, which states that there must be a
bypass valve which enables the softening unit to be isolated from the mains, while maintaining water supply to the end user. This means that the bypass valve can be used when filling or topping up a heating system, ensuring that radiators can be filled with water that has not been artificially softened. Another incorrect myth which can often put homeowners off is that ‘water softeners make drinking water salty’ when, in fact, no salt actually enters the water supply. The misconception comes from the fact that a small amount of salt is used to clean the unit.
Additions to your offering Providing a solution to an issue which impacts over 60% of homes in the UK will help you to build trust and ensure future business. This is particularly the case due to the amount of misinformation surrounding water softeners, which may have put you or the end user off previously. Water softeners are also relatively easy to install. A unit joins the water system where the home’s stop cock is located and can be fitted in as little as three to four hours, with guidance readily available from each water softener manufacturer, making it an ideal solution to add to your offering.

Guiding light To ensure you’re able to present your customer with all the facts surrounding water softeners, BEAMA has created a series of user-friendly guides for installers. The resources are said to provide a definitive source of information on hard water and water softeners in digestible formats and are backed by BEAMA members. The move comes after figures from Monarch Water revealed hard water costs the UK over £1bn each year. It is now calling on installers to use the guides as part of its mission to save homeowners money, as well as helping installers use water softeners as a key tool in their day-to-day efforts to make a difference to their customers. The series consists of four downloadable guides, including: ● A water softener myth buster for installers ● A guide for homeowners on how to tell if they live in a hard water area
● A one-stop digest on water softeners for

help customers spot if their home is suffering from hard water Kevin Ray said: “More than 60% of homes in the UK are supplied with hard water and suffer the effects of limescale on a daily basis. Having a water softener installed can save homeowners huge amounts of time and money, as well as make their experiences at home more comfortable. Our guides will help installers who want to use water softeners to make this difference to their customers, by informing homeowners not just of how to spot the effects of hard water, but also clue them up on just how easy it is to have one unit installed.
For more advice regarding water softeners and to download BEAMA’s www.rdr.link/PK037 guides,
“The guides are a first for the industry, so we’re looking forward to seeing how installers utilise them to their best potential.”

eBay is the world’s most popular auction site and can make buying a breeze. But how does it work when it comes to buying a used van? Dan Powell, Editor of Honest John Vans, explains.
A ‘SITE’ TO BEHOLD
B
uying a second-hand van can be a time consuming and occasionally nerve racking process, with thousands of private sellers and traders vying for your attention. Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply browse all of the deals in one place? Well, you can, thanks to eBay. It has more than 30,000 listings, which makes it a great one stop shop for a huge variety of vans being sold by dealers, hometraders and private individuals. Getting started is easy too. And once you’re signed up to an eBay account you can set-up search alerts, enter your location and specify the type of van that you want. Everything will then appear in the form of a simple notification to your email inbox or smartphone.
How does eBay work for van buyers? Although eBay is billed as an auction site, vans can be bought in a variety of different ways. These include:
● Best Offer: You offer the seller a price on a Buy It Now item and they decide whether to accept, reject, or counter your offer.
Your rights when buying a van on eBay ● Auction: Where the vehicle is sold to the person who makes the highest bid within a timed bidding process. ● Classified Advert: Buyers contact the seller directly to view the van before paying the advertised price. ● Buy It Now: Vehicles are advertised at a set price and sold instantly online.
54 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
If you buy from a private seller on eBay then the van must be ‘as described’, and if it does not meet this admittedly-vague description, you can raise a dispute with eBay. Buying from a dealer on eBay grants you additional legal rights, as you would buying from any other business under UK law. Businesses selling on eBay must provide certain information to you under the Electronic Commerce Regulations 2013, including full contact details, membership of any trade bodies, clear pricing, delivery and tax charges, plus a VAT number if applicable.

Bid to win With an auction-style listing, timing is everything. Make a careful note of when the auction ends, and be ready a good five minutes before the sale expires. Enter the absolute maximum you are prepared to pay 30 seconds before the end of the auction, but don’t confirm your bid until there are only five seconds remaining. This will mean other bidders won’t have enough time to enter another bid if you have outbid them, and although the same applies if your bid isn’t the highest, it also stops you from going over your budget in the heat of the moment.
Stay safe when paying If you have won the van it’s important to ensure you take precautions when paying and collecting it. Paypal payments offer a degree of protection and arguably more so for buyers than sellers, and the fee charged for the
service comes out of the seller’s payment, so it is a good option for buyers. Cash in hand works if you are comfortable carrying the required amount of money – you may be able to arrange the exchange at your bank if the seller agrees. Electronic payments are virtually instantaneous between most banks, but you can also use the Government’s CHAPS system for added security. Payments made via ESCROW are also secure, but only if the associated company is legitimate, so
always be cautious. When collecting the van, ensure all the paperwork tallies and you have organised the insurance and road tax before driving off. Ensure the name and address on the V5C (logbook) matches the details of the seller and location of the vehicle. Always ask the seller for two forms of identification to ensure they are the person that's listed on the V5C registration document.

BRIGHT
SPARK
At the most recent Toolfair and ELEX show in Coventry, PHPI’s sister title, Professional Electrician, spoke to the man making headlines by taking a stand against tool theft with his electrified contraption.
R
ay Taylor is a 61-year-old electrician from Wolverhampton and, through the years he has spent working in the industry, he has been the victim of over £5,000 worth of tool theft. It is hard to maintain a passion and motivation for your work when such brazen acts are often left unpunished – a passion that for many in the industry has been life-long. This is no different for Ray, as he recounts his first steps towards his electrical career: “Since I was 10, I used to fix my neighbour’s or my family friends’ hoovers, stuff like that. I was always playing with wires, playing about with my mum’s electrics. I’ve always been fascinated by it.” It is this same child-like sense of adventure that led Ray to construct an alarm for his van. Ray’s contraption consists of a 1,000V zapper from a fly swatter, which is fitted to a metal plate in the rear door handle of his van, meaning the shock is only isolated to the handle. The siren, sound bombs, zapper and a blue strobe light are on the same circuit which is fitted to a switch in the cabin. This switch is connected to the rear door key so that, when the van is locked and someone tries to pull at the handle, it will then activate. A selection of sensors fitted to all the van’s doors will also trigger the circuit.
There were two separate incidents that led Ray to the point where he felt he had to fight back against tool theft. “I had a car with tools worth around £2,000. I woke up one day and both the tools and my car had gone – they’ve never been seen since,” he says. “Then, in January of this year, I had almost £3,000 worth of tools taken. They robbed me of my livelihood.”
“Ray’s contraption consists of a 1,000V zapper from a fly swatter, which is fitted to a metal plate in the rear door handle of his van.” Crucially, there’s nothing illegal about Ray’s invention. Police have confirmed that, as long as Ray continues to display a yellow warning sign under the handle that states ‘Danger Live Terminals’, he’s doing nothing wrong. The ‘shock’ that greets any potential thieves isn’t even the major deterrent as, according to Ray, the flashing blue light is what draws attention. He says: “Just think about it: it’s three o’clock in the morning and a flashing blue light is going off. I’ve got
56 DECEMBER 2019 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
footage of every attempt, and they all ran. There have been three attempts since I installed the system, and every single one of them has run away.” But what is the main goal of all of this? Ray just hopes to inspire people to alarm their vans properly, thereby protecting their livelihoods. He pleads: “Just arm your vans. There are alarms out there that cost hundreds of pounds too, but they can easily trip by accident. If you hear my alarm go off, there is somebody attempting to get into my van, 100%. It’s stable and I’ve covered everything off that I possibly can.”

M
y mentor, Shaun, has always liked Makita tools and spoke highly of them, so I was definitely keen to give one of the company’s latest impact drivers a go for myself. My first impression of the product was, wow it’s tiny! Obviously this was nice, as it was small and very light, so ideal for anyone with smaller hands, like me. My arms didn’t tire of holding it either, like they have done when I’ve used similar tools. The drill has been particularly ideal to use when I have been stripping and removing boilers. It’s also been great for installing pipe clips, as well as removing and put down floorboards for access. Because it’s small and light, it’s great for carrying round the house on the job we’re working on and doesn’t get in the way. Having already had a bit of prior knowledge of similar products due to my
experience working with my mentor, I had a few things to compare it to. So far, I have found it very easy to use, and the battery life has been great, which is always a bonus! I particularly liked the battery indicator lights on the product, they were very impressive and you have a much better idea of when you’re about to run out of juice, so hopefully you’re not caught halfway through a job. It has four red lights on the front and only lost one light after a full day’s use. As mentioned, I also liked the feel of the product – it certainly wasn’t a chore to use. Overall, I would, without a doubt, recommend this product to other installers!

Back of the van reviews
MCDONALD WATER STORAGE
Yes, Peter Booth is back once again, this time with a review of the RIDGID Tools PowerClear drain cleaning machine. While Pete usually sub-contracts drain-related issues, he decided to give the tool a go on a job that had been going on for a little while longer than planned due to a blocked basin. We won’t go into the details too much of what Pete describes, but we’d recommend not watching while eating your dinner!
How it’s made
Picking up a copper hot water cylinder is nothing new to many engineers – nor is fitting and servicing one either, most likely. But did you know how they’re made? In the style of Inside the factory, McDonald Water Storage takes viewers through a quick look at the processes involved in manufacturing the company’s cylinders. While there’s an unfortunate lack of the ever-enthusiastic Gregg Wallace, there’s an impressive array of technology and quality processes that is on show. You could even try your own Wallace-style-commentary over the top!
Fortunately, it was nothing the PowerClear machine couldn’t deal with, so be sure to have a watch if you’re having similar problems on a job yourself.

Proud to be a professional In the first of a series of videos in association with Resideo (makers of Honeywell Home branded products), the company asks what makes installers proud to be a professional. Resideo’s campaign is designed to show support to the hard working installers across the UK, making the valid point that you should be recognised for the vital role you play in making the nation comfortable. This commitment very much falls in line with PHPI’s beliefs, and is the reason behind the regular #InstallOfFame page we run in the magazine and online. Social media has allowed thousands of installers to come together and show off their work, but we know there are many thousands more out there who do incredible jobs every day, so please continue to share your best installs with us by emailing phpi@hamerville.co.uk. CORNER
This month, Abbie Smith reports on the thoughts #TradesTalk participants have on setting future goals for themselves.
S
etting goals is a great way of increasing your productivity, tracking progress and holding yourself accountable, all of which can be difficult if you are your own boss. This month’s #TradesTalk conversation asked the twitter community about how working towards achievable aims can actually provide some much needed self-motivation. The discussion kicked off with the question: “Are you currently working towards any work goals? If so, what are you doing to make sure you get where you want?” The answers were varied, with many tradespeople claiming that their goal is just to manage through a hard day’s work, while others had a mixture of long and short term goals, including completing apprenticeships and qualifications, or broadening their knowledge of their trade.
Question two shifted its focus from work goals to personal ones. For this, improving mental and physical health, and making more time for family and hobbies were common answers. Some, however, mentioned that their work and personal goals went hand in hand with one another, as Gary Bedford (@GRBservices) explains:
The discussion then moved on to the potential negative impact that goals can have, asking: “Do you think setting goals can ever be a bad thing?” Whilst some offered a very
positive outlook, others commented that setting goals and not reaching them can become a Catch-22, in which it can be easy to feel bad about oneself. One way of preventing this, as suggested by @SuperMelioBros, was to use SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timed. It’s also important to reward yourself for your achievements, the community agreed. Interestingly, many people claimed that something as simple as fast food is their reward of choice, as is a post-work beer. For others, just the buzz of completing a goal and the setting of a new one is enough:
Question five asked: “What do you think would help you achieve your goals?” It was generally agreed that having more time would be a huge help to achieving a goal, but administrative tasks such as invoicing tend to take up a lot of precious free time. New business software apps were suggested as a method to overcome this problem. Support was also listed as an important factor in achieving goals, as was dedication and accountability. Whether you are the kind of person who likes to set goals or you find them stressful and unhelpful, it was emphasised that continuing to grow and learn in both your personal and professional life is extremely important, no matter how it is achieved. Working as a sole trader can be tough, but many agreed that setting yourself a responsible target or an aim is a great way of building upon your success, little by little.

ALL IN A YEAR’S WORK T
he plumbing and heating industry is in a constant state of change, with new legislation and technology always on the horizon, and 2019 has been no different. Part of the CIPHE’s role is to be an important voice in the industry, to draw attention to pressing issues such as scalding, Legionnaire’s disease and fuel poverty, to ensure they remain high on the public’s and Government’s agenda. The CIPHE also has a commitment to its members, supporting them in the work they do and promoting the importance of professionalism across the sector. This year has been successful on many fronts, but there is always more that can be done.
Industry voice One of the biggest aspects of the Institute’s work is to safeguard the most vulnerable in our society. The CIPHE has been instrumental in stimulating discussions on a number of issues that affect the sector – notably Legionnaires’ disease and scalding. The latter’s impact on individuals who suffer the pain and lifelong effects of being scalded in wholly preventable incidents, is an especially distressing problem that plumbing and heating professionals must face up to. The Institute has also been involved in discussions and research surrounding the future of heat, facilitating a round table for installers to speak with BEIS on their experiences and expectations. Energy is a massive issue for the sector as a whole, and it is important to keep those that will feel the

This is linked with the ‘Proud to be a Professional’ campaign that has resonated so clearly with the industry, highlighting the value that training and licence to practice can bring to engineers and their customers. 2019 also saw Tracey Richardson’s tenure as President of the CIPHE come to an end, for which we all extend our enormous gratitude. Her tireless work in promoting apprenticeships and training was just a small part of her tremendous success. effects of change the most front of mind, namely the consumer and the installer. To enhance the voice that it has in plumbing and heating, the CIPHE has revamped its own magazine, complete with a new website.
Membership For all its work in trying to improve the plumbing and heating sector, the CIPHE is nothing without its members. As of September 2019, it has recruited over 500 new members, two thirds of which are qualified members of the industry, with the rest embarking on careers in plumbing and heating. This mix of ambition and experience is exciting, and it is expected that the overall number of new members for the year will be close to 1,000. Supporting its members is something that the CIPHE takes very seriously, with

Year ahead Tracey’s successor, Christopher Northey, brings us nicely onto the subject of the year ahead. Alongside Vice-President Mel Gumbs, he will be taking the CIPHE into the New Year, with a particular focus on public health engineering. The Institute is set to modernise in 2020, with huge investment being put into a digital transformation that will enable key messaging to be conveyed more clearly. With a number of intriguing projects expected to launch in summer next year, the CIPHE’s ability to engage in industry debate will be significantly enhanced.

NAME THAT CITY
Answer: London
Did you know that not a single baby was named Nigel in 2016, and only 20 have been named Nigel since? This fact came as a disappointing shock to 56 year old Nigel Smith, who recently decided to organise a meeting of Nigels to “celebrate our Nigelness!” The event was hailed Nigel Night – not the most imaginative event name, we’ll admit... Having advertised the event on Facebook, Mr Smith claims to have got some 433 Nigels to attend, plus around another thousand non-Nigels who just wanted to come along. According to The Metro, all Nigels were required to prove their credentials with a passport or driver’s licence, and anyone who did was rewarded with a free pint and a Nigel badge. Everyone else was given a non-Nigel badge, obviously. Mr Smith said: “We had a singer, a busker and a comedian, all called Nigel. We had Nigel awards for the furthest travelled, the youngest and the oldest. We picked a collective noun for Nigels, which is a niggle of Nigels.” As well as celebrating their Nigelness, the event also helped to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
