Positive impact Debate surrounding how to decarbonise heating is occurring with increasing frequency – and rightly so as it is an issue that, over time, will significantly impact the sector. But, while the future of heat captures our attention, we could lose sight of the wider issue of sustainability. And there is much the sector can achieve here also. To become more sustainable the sector will need to make changes to the way it operates. These adjustments do not need to be dramatic – often they may cost little, or nothing – and many will be introduced by manufacturers with little or no consequences for installers. Cumulatively, however, they could have a positive environmental impact. One example is packaging. Of course products need to be protected during storage and in transit, and easily accessible, but the amount of non-recyclable packaging used is often a frustration for many and can be damaging to the environment. One well-known manufacturer, Worcester Bosch, has just launched a new range of boilers – the Greenstar 4000 – and the company has taken the opportunity to remove all polystyrene packaging and replace it with a household recyclable honeycomb cardboard. Plastic bags have also been removed and replaced with compostable bags. You can read more about the new packaging – and the new boiler – on page 16. Workwear is another area where sustainability is increasingly important. In this issue we hear from Hultafors about its Snickers Workwear and EMMA safety footwear, and what the company is doing to address the issue. You can find out on page 33. With environmental considerations of growing importance across the board, we should all do what we can to become more sustainable.

BRYAN SHANNON It is with much sadness that we have to announce the recent passing of our publisher Bryan Shannon. In a career spanning more than 50 years it is no exaggeration to say that Bryan helped to change the established order of trade magazine publishing in the UK. His visionary ideas on distribution, utilising the trade counters of leading merchants and wholesalers, commitment to editorial excellence and market leading circulations quickly established the ‘Professional’ series of titles as essential reading for thousands of hands on tradespeople. Today, the extensive portfolio includes highly regarded titles ranging from construction, to motor mechanics and hairdressers, plus the highly popular Toolfair and Elex trade shows. As well as considerable magazine success, Bryan’s other great legacy is the wonderful opportunities afforded to legions of budding journalists and advertising sales representatives to cut their teeth at Hamerville Media, many of whom have subsequently go on to run their own successful business’s within the sector .The iconic cockerel figurehead which he chose to reflect the importance of being up first with the news will continue to have much to crow about in the years to come.

WORCESTER LAUNCHES GREENSTAR 4000 Worcester Bosch has announced the launch of its latest boiler range, the Greenstar 4000. Replacing the Greenstar i series, the 4000 builds on the tried and tested features of its predecessor, while receiving upgrades to its appearance and performance. The company have focussed on some key improvements including increased ease – and speed – of installation, commissioning and servicing, alongside improvements in efficiency and control for the user. For example, the Greenstar 4000 has been designed with a ‘SimpleSwitch’ in mind, to ensure that current Greenstar i owners can replace their i Junior, Si or i system boiler with a 4000 thanks to the same fixing points, pipe centres and flue to valve distance. The Greenstar 4000 also features ‘planet-friendly packaging’. The company has removed all polystyrene packaging and replaced it with a household recyclable honeycomb cardboard. All plastic bags have been removed and replaced with compostable bags. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management commented: “The Greenstar 4000 series builds upon everything people love about the Greenstar i with improvements to make it more accessible and attractive to installers and homeowners alike.” You can read more about the new boiler on page 16

GRANT INTRODUCES TRAINING FACILITY FOR MCALPINE TEAMS ONLINE COURSES UP WITH ‘FLYING SCOTSMAN’ Grant UK’s Training Academy in Devizes has been reconfigured to allow for a new training area which will be used for the delivery of online training courses via the company’s eLearning Academy. Launched last summer the Grant eLearning Academy provides a range of free courses, as well as on-demand and instructor-led courses, available for installers and heating engineers to access remotely. “The ways in which engineers and installers want to receive product training has significantly changed over the years,” commented Phil Stanley, Grant UK’s Training Manager. “Face-to-face training remains the preferred method favoured by installers, but the past twelve months have made us adapt and through the Grant eLearning Academy we have been able to continue providing quality training to heating engineers throughout the country. This latest development will help us increase our online course capacity.” The Training Academy at Grant UK’s head offices in Devizes, Wiltshire, has been established for almost two decades. Starting out providing oil boiler training and OFTEC qualification and assessments, the Academy later expanded to offer a comprehensive selection of courses on renewable heating systems. Today, air source heat pump courses are the most popular with over 700 installers and heating engineers completing heat pump training through the Academy within the last two years. BOILERS BOUNCE BACK AS CONSUMERS INVEST IN HOME RENOVATION Sales of domestic gas boilers bounced back from the Covid downturn, according to recent figures from the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC). The figures show that 2021 could be a record year for gas boiler sales, with year-to-date (Jan-April) sales up 41% from 2020, with a 12-month average sales figure increasing by 14%. Commenting on the figures, the Director of HHIC Stewart Clements said: “Sales have certainly bounced back from 2020, and consumers are once again investing in home renovation as they see the light at the end of the dark Covid tunnel. If 2021 continues this way, our UK-based industry will see a record breaking year. Over 80% of the boilers sold are combination heat and hot water boilers, where the home has no hot water cylinder.”
McAlpine Plumbing Products supports darts player, and two-time PDC World Champion, Gary Anderson. ‘The Flying Scotsman’, as Gary is known, has linked up with McAlpine since 2018 as he fights to grab back his top status on the oche, after narrowly missing out on a third PDC World Darts Championship in 2021. Like Gary Anderson, McAlpine is proud of its Scottish heritage and since 1907 has manufactured its products in the West of Scotland. “McAlpine is a fabulous company with its heart and soul in Scotland and it is no secret that I’m very passionate about my country and I’ve never forgotten my roots. McAlpine is a remarkable success story for Scotland and most people in the UK will probably have some McAlpine products installed in their home. I’m delighted to wear the logo of such a proud Scottish company on my shirt,” said Gary. “We’re delighted to be associated with Gary who is a true Scottish sporting superstar. Darts is such a popular sport with plumbing and heating installers that it’s a logical tie up for Gary and us,” explained Ross McAlpine.

BAXI EXTENDS SUPPORT FOR NEW DIGITAL BENCHMARK Baxi has announced that it has integrated the new Benchmark app with its own Toolbelt App, a digital platform that its customers use when on site. Baxi Works installers will be able to access the checklist digitally, along with Gas Safe notifications, warranty information and registration, and other onsite support features, all in one place. David Cook, Residential Sales Director, at Baxi, said: “With a large proportion of Baxi Works members already actively registering boilers using the Toolbelt App, the incorporation of the Benchmark Checklist will encourage our valued Baxi Works installers to prioritise safety and quality by taking a whole life approach to boiler care with information such as installation and servicing history for engineers readily accessible through the Toolbelt App.” When Toolbelt users input information into the Benchmark feature, this acts as a ‘boiler passport’ recording installation, servicing and commissioning data in one centralised platform. Using this app, installers can keep track of installations completed to the Benchmark standard, as well as ones that still need to be done. To find out more please

GAS PRICE INCREASES COULD BE USED TO HELP MEET CLIMATE TARGETS The government may face a public backlash if it attempts to use an increase in domestic gas prices as a way of cajoling homeowners to buy low carbon heating appliances, a recent survey suggests. The new survey found that four in ten voters (40%) would be ‘less likely to vote’ for a Government that announced an increase in the price of gas as a way of encouraging people to switch from boilers to heat pumps. In an added twist, nearly eight in ten (76%) would support reducing VAT on domestic gas, something that was proposed during the Brexit campaign, as European Union rules on VAT no longer apply. Mike Foster, Chief Executive of the Energy and Utilities Alliance, who commissioned the online research of 2,000 homeowners, said: “Far from cutting gas bills, they are set to increase. It will be a gross breach of trust and a very reckless political move for any political party to make.” ‘Too Close to Home’, the EUA’s full report on consumer attitudes to climate change, low carbon technologies and affordability is due to be published in mid-June.

HEAT PUMP DEMAND RISES Rated People has revealed that demand for heat pumps has risen by 28% in 2021. Research within this year’s Home Improvement Trends Report also found that 57% of homeowners want to be more eco-friendly. Rated People’s Trends Report found that only 3% of UK homes currently have heat pumps, but this number looks set to rise as demand increases. One of the key barriers for heat pumps is that the upfront installation costs are generally much larger than conventional gas fired boilers. Adrienne Minster, CEO of Rated People commented: “Growing awareness about climate change has meant that homeowners are keen to go green where possible. For a number of years, those wanting to make sustainable home renovations have been limited in choice, with solar panels and insulation often being the go-to options. However, the fuel we use to actually heat our homes can make a big difference to a property’s carbon footprint. This is where heat pumps can play a huge role.”
NEW NAVIEN LOYALTY SCHEME LAUNCHED Navien has launched Navien Choice – a new loyalty scheme open to all oil and gas boiler installers. The loyalty programme allows installers to gain reward points for every NCB-CE combi, NCB-CE system and LCB700 Blue Flame oil boiler they register. Points can then either be ‘banked’ or redeemed immediately for instant rewards, with participants able to claim a Sony wireless speaker after registering just one NCB combi gas boiler. Installing nine LCB700 oil boilers would acquire enough points for a 43” 4K television or an iPad. Amongst other rewards available are wireless speakers, pizza ovens, PlayStation 5 consoles, iPhones and holiday vouchers – as well as barbeques, perfect for the summer months. To sign up and start benefitting from the scheme
60% of tradespeople say that they have been approached by or seen someone they suspected were selling stolen second-hand tools, according to new research by Direct Line business insurance. The overwhelming majority (91%) of tradespeople immediately refused to buy the tools offered to them by the suspicious seller. Just under a quarter (24%) notified a trade authority, while 23% informed the police. Jonny McHugh, SME Business Manager at Direct Line, stated: “Our research demonstrates how the scale and frequency of tool theft is partly fuelled by the demand for cheap second-hand tools which are quick to source. Tool theft is hugely disruptive and often has a devastating impact on tradespeople’s ability to work and livelihoods.” Direct Line Tools Essentials service comes with Tools and Business Equipment insurance and helps to tradespeople replace their essential tools within 24 hours. www.rdr.link/pb005
Renewable energy training provider, GTEC, has launched a new battery storage training course, offering renewable installers the chance to upskill to install Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS). The training course covers all the essential requirements for the installation of EESS, including identification of equipment, arrangements and operating modes. A new CPD course on air movement has been launched by UNICO SYSTEMS. The new course is designed to give traditional heating and plumbing engineers an indication of how they could add renewable heating, cooling and ventilation to their current offering. The Unico System can be connected to a heat pump or traditional boiler system with options to provide heating, cooling and ventilation without the need for radiators.

THE GRANT HOUSE | Part 3 In association with
Before the installation
In this four-part series, PHPI and Grant UK team up to bring you a whole house renewable heating project, from start to finish. In part three we take a look at the installation of the home’s underfloor heating system, step-by-step.
The completed kitchen
INSTALLING THE UFH About the House The PHPI/Grant House is a four-bedroom semi-detached property in Wiltshire which is undergoing a complete heating system upgrade as part of a wider renovation project. In addition to building a large extension off the side of the property, the owners are upgrading their home’s heating system, changing from a gas boiler to a renewable system thanks to the installation of a Grant Aerona³ air source heat pump.
I
n the summer of 2020, a large renovation project started at a family home in Chippenham, Wiltshire. It included the removal of the old heating system and an upgrade to a greener, renewable Grant UK heating system. A new heat source was installed alongside a new hot water storage cylinder, with underfloor heating systems laid throughout the downstairs of the property. Underfloor heating is a popular choice for heat pump systems such as the Grant Aerona³ heat pump, which has been fitted into this house. It is especially effective in new build projects and extensions where this type of heat emitter is smoothly integrated into the initial designs, during the project’s in-depth planning stages.
Underfloor options For the Grant House, two types of underfloor heating systems were fitted. Within the new extension, a Grant Uflex underfloor heating system was installed which was embedded within the floor construction. Throughout the remainder of the downstairs (where existing flooring was in place) the company’s low-profile underflooring heating system, Uflex MINI, was installed. This system is made up of self-adhesive panels with castellations and is just 15mm in finished floor height, which made it ideal for installation in the existing, level floors. In this step by step we followed Meadows Plumbing & Heating as they worked on the downstairs of the new extension.

Uflex underfloor heating systems effectively maintain room temperatures while also helping a heat pump to work as efficiently as it can. Grant Uflex is ideal for new builds and extensions because the pipe can be laid and screed poured during the early phases, allowing other works to be completed while the screed fully dries. The Uflex MINI is for existing floors – its low profile means it needs less screed and therefore less drying time. In this house renovation, the Uflex MINI system was being walked on within three days, reducing disruption, and allowing the other stages of the project to continue.

he first complete re-design of Rhino's popular 3m PipeTube since its launch in 2005, the PipeTube Pro is a new system for securely transporting copper pipe, plastic conduit and other similar materials. The company’s recent market research identified that 67% of customers felt that a PVC lining was the most important feature of a pipe carrying accessory. Listening to their needs, Rhino has added an optional full-length PVC lining to the tube, to stop the galvanic reaction that can otherwise take place, discolouring the pipes stored inside.
Other key areas have also been the focus of the updated PipeTube Pro, including: ● Upgraded integral locking system ● Additional rubber seal to reduce water entering the tube ● Stylish new design Climbing the ladder A second new product has also recently arrived from Rhino in the form of the AluminiumLadder. The product combines strength and style to provide one of the most lightweight and aesthetically pleasing roof access products available for commercial vehicles. By utilising highly robust aluminium handrails and glass filled nylon rungs, the AluminiumLadder offers an extremely lightweight solution – 50% lighter than Rhino's previous steel ladder, excluding fitting kits. HEATING & RENEWABLES
A STAR IS
Rebn Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management for Worcester Bosch, introduces the company’s latest boiler – the Greenstar 4000.
I
’m delighted to announce the launch of our Greenstar 4000 boiler, built with a number of improvements and refinements on the highly-popular Greenstar I, which it replaces this year. The Greenstar I has no doubt been one of the best-selling boilers for Worcester Bosch, with over three million homes being warmed by the range since its launch in 2006. However, after 15 years it is time for the next step. It may feel like this is goodbye to the Greenstar I – but it’s not really. This is because the Greenstar 4000 series builds upon the tried, tested and much-loved features of its predecessor, whilst being transformed in appearance and performance. We’ve raised the bar with the speed and ease of installation, commissioning and servicing, alongside improvements in efficiency and control. As always, we value the feedback of installers and the development of the Greenstar 4000 was no different. These are some of the latest benefits that we’ve included following their suggestions.
With both front and right-hand side panels removable, it is easy to access internal key components. 16 JULY / AUGUST 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

A ‘SimpleSwitch’ We know that many homeowners out there have a Greenstar i and when it comes to replacing it they may want a similar boiler in look and feel. That’s why we’ve designed the Greenstar 4000 with a ‘SimpleSwitch’ in mind. Any i Junior, Si, or i system boiler can be easily replaced with a 4000 thanks to the same fixing points, pipe centres, valve distance from the wall and flue position. By matching its predecessor models the 4000 can be installed with minimum time, effort or re-work. The wall-frame also provides pre-piping options for all seven combi pipe connections before the boiler is hung.
Ease of access We’ve not only adopted the modern, sleek look and feel from the Greenstar 8000 Lifestyle range but also the practical design. With both front and right-hand side panels removable, it is easy to access internal key components, as well as test points and a front-facing PRV that can be removed in seconds.
2006
Greenstar 4000 replaces the Greenstar I, which was first launched 15 years ago, in 2006 The Greenstar 4000 has new control features which make servicing easier. This includes a range of service reminders to promote a responsible service regime as well as an ongoing relationship with customers. These service reminders can be set by the number of months or the number of burner operating hours. Specific dates can be selected when a Comfort+ or Comfort + I RF is installed. The boiler menu can highlight any fault complete with long-text description, with the last ten faults saved in the ‘Fault History’ menu for easy tracking. When servicing, the component test function allows certain components to be activated via the ‘Activate Test’ menu, quickly diagnosing potential issues without the need to remove the front cover. Components such as fan, pump, diverter valve, ignition transformer and burner can all be activated in this way. Finally, you can ensure complete boiler drain-down by moving the diverter valve into mid-position through the ‘Special Function’ menu.
Made of more Other features include a large 500ml condensate siphon that helps significantly reduce freezing risk, meaning peace of mind for homeowners in the colder months. The 4000 also has flexibility with horizontal and vertical flue lengths of 12m (60/100) along with improved flue length reduction on 45 and 90 degree bends, compared to the Greenstar i. In terms of modulation rates, we have a 1:10 range which helps reduce gas consumption, energy bills and overall wear and tear on components.
Planet-friendly packaging With the Greenstar 4000 we’ve made a concerted effort to make its packaging as planet-friendly as possible while ensuring product protection during delivery. To do so we’re removed all polystyrene packaging and replaced it with a household recyclable honeycomb cardboard. All plastic bags have been removed and replaced with compostable bags which can be placed in garden waste for composting, or used as food waste bin bags, or disposed of in normal household waste. To ensure that our packaging is still protective we have undergone intense transport tests to ensure it is equally as robust and secure as our old packaging. To summarise, we all learn from our history and predecessors and this is no different. The Greenstar i will never be forgotten by us and hopefully installers, and that memory lives on in the Greenstar 4000. HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
Plumbers who already work with underfloor heating know how popular it’s becoming. So, what’s driving this growth, and how are installers taking advantage of it? Lee Halstead, Technical Engineer at RWC UK, provides some answers.
U
nderfloor heating (UFH) has been steadily gaining popularity, with various reports highlighting year on year growth. One of them – the ‘Underfloor Heating Market by Component – Global Forecast 2023’ – believes sales will have grown 67% between 2016 and 2023. It suggests there’s lots of potential, especially with homeowners on the look-out for smart, energy efficient heating that brings other benefits too. The fact is, UFH ticks all the boxes – and more – but it’s just less well understood than more conventional heating. To take advantage of this potential, plumbers need to do two things. First, get more familiar with the technology and its benefits. And second, explain these benefits to homeowners. So how does UFH work? It does exactly what it says on the tin. Specially designed underfloor pipes carry relatively low temperature water (typically between 35-45°C). This water then heats the floor up to between 25-27°C, and effectively radiates heat up through the floor and into the room. In contrast, conventional radiators carry water at 75°C, and work by convection. Both can create comfortable homes, but as UFH heats larger areas, at lower temperatures, we believe it’s clear which is the more energy efficient.
Smart savings Understandably, it’s this efficiency which most attracts homeowners. Moreover, most UFH solutions are compatible with smart thermostats and controls, so can be used to create multi-zone systems. For example, the JG Aura range, part of JG Underfloor, offers smart zonal heating that is controllable by the JG Aura app. The net result of combining UFH with smart technology is a more customised heating solution, as well as additional cost-savings. The first of these – customised heating – is something people really feel. The second – cost-savings – is something they see in their energy bills. Over time, these really add up and help pay back the cost of installation which can be a little higher than for more conventional heating systems. Beyond savings, UFH has many additional benefits but, like the underfloor pipework, these aren’t always immediately visible.
18 JULY/AUGUST 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
UFH uses radiant heat, which results in lower moisture levels and less air movement than with convection. Aesthetic benefits It’s odd to say that UFH looks great, because you can’t actually see it. And that’s precisely the point. There are no externally visible pipes, and no bulky radiators. Rooms and walls are clear, giving homeowners less clutter and more space. UFH is also a lot quieter, with no gurgling pipes and creaking floors as water expands and contracts. If it wasn’t for the warmth, you’d hardly know it was there.
018_PHPI_JULYAUG21V2_Layout 1 15/06/2021 11:39 Page 19
Good for health and well-being UFH uses radiant heat, which results in lower moisture levels and less air movement than with convection. As a consequence, there’s less movement of airborne dust allergens, bringing potential health benefits for those with allergies. Similarly, the absence of radiators eliminates the risk of children getting burnt or crashing into sharp edges.
The ‘green’ factor Finally, there’s the question of sustainability and future-proofing. We know that gas is on borrowed time, with 2025 marking the end of gas boilers in new builds. There’s also the Government’s ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2050. One of the most anticipated replacement technologies – low-carbon heat pumps – is coming fast, which is even more great news for UFH installers. There’s huge potential out there on everything from new build through to retrofit and renovation projects.
UFH – how hard can it be to install? UFH is a different approach to heating, but in terms of installation it’s not as complex as many people imagine, or at least it shouldn’t be. The principles are simple, the technology has come on leaps and bounds, and there are many products out there to choose from. As with anything, it pays to look for reliable brands with extra features and support around the package. For example,
the JG Underfloor brand includes the Polybutylene JG Layflat pipe which has been designed for flexibility, simplifying the pipe laying process. The JG team is also available to provide technical help and support, including free CAD drawings and installation advice. Certainly, there are a few additional things to consider with UFH, including using conduit pipes to help protect against accidental and heat damage, while it’s also essential to remove any air in the system and pressure test it with water. But these are easy to learn and to do, and by liaising with manufacturers, jobs can be delivered quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Generally speaking, UFH is just another heating technology. And with a little care and planning, it’s one that could help plumbers and installers keep busy for years. To find out more about underfloor heating and the options available www.rdr.link/pb015

A GROWING MARKET
T
o make the UK’s ‘net zero by 2050’ commitment viable, the Committee on Climate Change has said that 19 million heat pumps will need to be installed nationwide. And to get us there, an interim target has been set of 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028. Newbuild homes can make a significant contribution, with the government aiming to build 300,000 per year by the middle of the decade, when the newbuild gas and oil boiler ban comes in – but there’s also a big job to do in terms of upgrading the way we heat our current housing stock.
Iain Bevan, Commercial Manager of Heating & Renewables at Daikin UK, explains why now is the time to get heat pump savvy. That’s why it’s vital that homeowners and housebuilders have a good understanding of the benefits of heat pumps – as well as access to certified installers with the skills and knowledge to provide them. Industry estimates predict that 17,000 new heat pump installers will be required in the next decade, to decarbonise our heat supply and meet the targets that have been set.
Heat pump growth Heat pumps are one of several different heating technologies being explored as alternatives to oil and gas boilers, and they’re by far the most established, which means they can easily be rolled out at scale. Confidence in the future of heat pumps is continuing to rise and it is anticipated that the number of parts and components ordered by manufacturers will double this year, in respond to growing demand. With so many different options available for homeowners, there’s a heat pump to suit almost any type and size of home, and to meet varying end user demands for performance, efficiency and energy savings. Air-to-water heat pumps, for example, are ideal for homeowners looking to go fully renewable. This year, we’ve launched our new generation all-in-one air-to-water heat pump – the Altherma 3 Monobloc. It’s ideal for any property where space is at a premium, because there’s no indoor unit needed – and that also makes it quick and easy to install, without the need for F-Gas qualification. As well as maximising space in the home, the new unit offers savings compared to traditional heating systems due to its high efficiency and low running

Installers who join our Sustainable Home Network can benefit from free, hands-on-tools training costs – and can save the average UK household up to £378 on heating each year. Hybrid heat pumps are another great option, ideal for smaller homes in urban areas – that are likely to have a combi-boiler – and where the shell of the building is not energy -efficient enough to rely on electricity alone. Hybrid systems combine the power of a heat pump with the familiarity of a high efficiency boiler, making them the ideal solution for both installers and homeowners who are new to renewable technology. And while hybrid heat pumps can be installed with a household’s existing boiler, to help installers seal the deal with their customers, we’re running a special offer at the moment, whereby every homeowner who buys a Daikin Altherma hybrid system gets a brand-new, high efficiency boiler for free.
Help is on hand The government’s Green Jobs Taskforce has been set up to ensure the UK has a pool of skilled workers to help deliver net zero, including by supporting people who are retraining to work with green technologies. And at Daikin, we’re doing our bit as well.
2050
The Government has a target for net-zero emissions by 2050.
Installers who join our Sustainable Home Network can benefit from free, hands-on-tools training at our industry-leading training centres around the UK, to develop their heat pump installation and commissioning expertise. Other benefits of joining the network include dedicated technical support, sales ready leads, business support and special offers. This year, we’re also running a free hybrid heat pump training programme at 11 of our Sustainable Home Centres across the country. The course is one day long, and covers installation, electrical connections, hydraulics and system start-up – everything installers need to know, to take their first step into the renewable heating market.
The time is now Heat pump technology is more than just a trend; it’s the future. Installers need to adapt and transform their businesses to remain relevant in the long-term, and those that do so first will enjoy a competitive advantage, at least to start with. When it comes to renewables, housebuilders are buying at scale, and individual homeowners are stepping into the relative unknown, which means word-of-mouth recommendations are more important than ever – so each successful job should open up more work. Andrew Hounsfield
Options for oil With over 1million homes in the UK heated by oil, PHPI spoke with Andrew Hounsfield, Managing Director of Hounsfield Boilers, about the features of the company’s oil boilers and the future for this fuel as the sector seeks to decarbonise heat.
Q
The Tuscan oil boiler from Hounsfield Boilers has a reputation for being compact – how is this achieved? Essentially by maximising heat exchange surface area. The traditional style of heat exchanger evolved from solid fuel boiler design and has a steel plate in the top with a ceramic pad in the base. In the Hounsfield design all faces of the primary heat exchanger contain water and are heat exchange surface areas, a small door provides access for servicing. So, for example with water in the base of the boiler we’re capturing ‘radiated heat’ directly from the burner flame instead of it being lost to a ceramic insulation pad in the heat exchanger base. Radiated heat is the easiest form of heat to capture in boiler design as opposed to convected heat captured by the baffle system. The end result is not only a compact boiler, the design also prevents boiler failure as stress fractures are avoided and there are no ‘stagnant’ areas for debris to accumulate.
Q
Are there any other installer-friendly features?
For servicing there are no inaccessible areas when it comes to cleaning the heat exchangers. Plugs and sockets are provided for mains power and the burner, so isolating the mains power fail safe by simply removing a plug and the burner is easily removed for servicing. Our life-long Teflon cored flexible oil lines are a benchmark to the quality of a Hounsfield Boiler. They eliminate well known hazards associated with the failure of cheaper rubber or thermoplastic hoses used throughout the industry. We supply an oil filter and fire valve

assembly kit with every boiler which includes oil line inserts. It’s these ‘attention to detail’ elements we know our customers appreciate.
Q
You have recently introduced a new burner –what are its benefits?
Changing our burner supply from Bentone was not an easy decision as the BF1 has many good features. However, Elco being part of the Ariston Thermo Group have a large resource for product development and future proofing our product, and I was convinced it was the way to go. Importantly Elco is headed by Guiliano Corticini, formerly with Riello, and has many years’ experience in the design of domestic oil burners and like me, shares a passion for attention to detail. The new burner has exceeded our already high standard for quality and it is feature packed and future proofed to be able to run on HVO (hydrated vegetable oil) fuel. It has industry standard components, is easy to service, has a patented combustion head delivering outstanding performance, minimising environmental impact, these are
024_PHPI_JULYAUG21_Layout 1 11/06/2021 18:14 Page 25
just a few of the features. The burner is fitted to all of Hounsfield’s Tuscan oil-fired boiler range and we’ve produced some short and informative videos on our website to introduce the new burner. (To find out more about the new burner and view the videos www.rdr.link/pb018) please
Q
With government keen to reduce carbon emissions and the sector looking to decarbonise heating how might rural properties be heated in the future? I am very excited about the potential for HVO to be the replacement fuel for traditional kerosene. Comparing emission figures explains why: HVO = 0.036kg CO2e/kWh that’s 91% less than Kerosene and is less than ASHP’s @ 0.09 CO2e/kWh and GSHP’s @ 0.08 CO2e/kWh (when installed in under-floor heating systems), for comparison electricity is 0.233 CO2e/kWh. HVO tick’s all of the right boxes; it’s sustainable, it’s low carbon, affordable and can be used as a drop-in fuel. For many rural homes heat pumps are not practical or affordable so HVO is a clear solution. As a sector the domestic oil boiler industry isn’t creating enough awareness of HVO. It came onto the market around 15 years ago, and has been available in the UK around three years, it’s used in commercial vehicles on our roads today.
Q
Can the company’s boilers run on HVO, or would any of the boilers components need altering?
All of Hounsfield boilers are future proofed ready to run on HVO with no changes needed. For more details on Hounsfield Boilers please www.rdr.link/pb019

WATER HEATING & CYLINDERS
CYLINDERS // Q&A Following the launch of its Platinum range of unvented cylinders, Neil Overton, Sales Director at Gledhill, answers some questions on the new offering.
Q
Earlier in the year Gledhill launched its Platinum range of unvented cylinders – what were the reasons for this move? We are dedicated in providing installers and homeowners with a solution to every application. Previously, Gledhill only manufactured unvented cylinders ranges with external expansion options such as; the StainlessLite Plus, Stainless Pro and Stainless ES. The Stainless Platinum range is the latest addition to our wide range of unvented cylinders that now removes the need of an external expansion vessel.
Q
How have you eliminated the requirement for an external expansion vessel? The Stainless Platinum range eliminates the need for an external expansion vessel by incorporating an internal air pocket and baffle inside the cylinder. When the water is heated within a standard hot water cylinder, the volume of the water expands and therefore requires a separate external vessel installed alongside the cylinder. For the Stainless Platinum, the internal air pocket and baffle inside the cylinders has the ability to expand and compress within the stainless-steel body of the cylinder, meaning the need for an external expansion vessel is eliminated. It reduces the time for installation as well as minimising the pipework and space needed.

Q
Without the need for an external expansion vessel, are the company’s Platinum cylinders easier to install?
through incorporating efficiency changes. We can see this continuing with the Interim Part L arriving in December 2021, for implementation in 2022, and followed by the Future Homes Standard in 2024, for implementation in 2025.
The internal expansion allows for a neat and compact system as well as producing space saving capabilities. As the need for an external expansion vessel has been removed, installers now have the benefit of being able to utilise tighter spaces when installing the cylinders, providing an easier installation.
Q
If solar thermal panels are being added to a system, would a new cylinder also be required?
Q
Sustainability is an increasing issue for many people. When a Heat Pump is being installed as the main source of heat in a property is a specific type of cylinder required?
The UK’s drive towards Net Zero by 2050 is becoming a fast reality, with the forthcoming introduction of the 2025 ‘Future Homes standard’, Britain’s house builders are looking at alternative solutions to heat and supply domestic hot water to our homes, such as Heat Pumps. Therefore, to achieve this, Heat Pumps do require an unvented cylinder which needs to be specifically designed to work with this technology. At Gledhill we have designed highly efficient domestic hot water cylinders that work specifically with low temperature heat pumps by combining a larger heat exchange for maximum heat transfer, with new thermostatic control integration, ensuring reliable and hot domestic water. Also, it is vital that the right size of cylinder has been specified for the installation. Increasing the size of the domestic hot water cylinder for low carbon technology enables you to store more usable hot water, but also ensures that the hot water is heated as efficiently as possible.
Q
Are there any other considerations that need to be taken into account when selecting a cylinder for use alongside a heat pump?
In order to support the government’s commitments to Net Zero, there needs to be a shift towards renewable technologies across the HVAC sector. As part of this shift there are other considerations that need taking into account, such as legislation. New technologies such as Heat Pumps need domestic hot water cylinders which will require more space than the traditional combi-boiler. Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal systems both need a way to store the energy they create which again means that hot water cylinders or thermal stores need to be factored into new build properties. Legislation and building regulations have often been used to help guide developers
If a customer is looking to install solar thermal panels to their property, a new cylinder that has been specifically designed for this would be needed. The reason behind this is based on the coils within the cylinder, as each coil is attached to a certain heat source. For example, indirect cylinders that are heated by a conventional boiler (either gas or oil), will work in tandem with a coil specifically for that heat source. If an additional heat source, such as solar panels, have been added to the property, it will need a second high performance coil within the cylinder to work with it.
Q
Are any qualifications required to fit a cylinder? When it comes to installing hot water cylinders, strict safety regulations have been put in place due to its high-pressure performance. The means that installers must have a G3 qualification if they wish to install any hot water cylinder within a domestic property. The qualification covers the inspection, installation, commissioning, and servicing of a hot water system. For more details please www.rdr.link/pb020

WATER HEATING & CYLINDERS
At your service... Not all cylinders are annually serviced, even though it is a crucial part of maintaining the ongoing product warranty. George Linder, Product Manager at Heatrae Sadia, outlines some of the areas to focus on when carrying out a Megaflo unvented cylinder inspection and service. 1 I Check the key components A key part of the routine maintenance check should include making sure the safety valves operate correctly and water can flow freely through. In order to check the movement of the water, manually operate the pressure relief valve for a few seconds, the water should flow freely through the tundish and discharge pipework. The valve should also reseat correctly once it’s released. This procedure can then be repeated to check the expansion relief valve is also working as it should be. When carrying out this service, if the internal tank needs inspecting too then this can be done through the immersion heater boss. If the immersion heater needs to be removed and replaced, careful attention must be paid to ensure that the tank is not damaged. Using the wrong tools and methods could mean ripping the immersion boss off the top of the tank, or potentially cause leaks from the immersion boss.
2 I Clear the strainer To clear the strainer of any debris, the isolating valve prior to the pressure reducing valve or main stop cock to the system must be turned off. Following this, the lowest hot tap in the system can be turned on to relieve any pressure build up. Using a spanner, unscrew the pressure reducing cartridge and remove the moulded housing. The strainer is within the cartridge so this can be taken out and placed under running water to remove any particulate matter.
3 I Descale the immersion heater Particularly important in hard water areas, descaling can help to extend the life of a cylinder and improve performance. Before carrying out this work, turn off the mains water supply, isolate the electrical supply and turn the boiler off. A hosepipe should then be attached to the drain cock, which will take the water to a suitable discharge point and open a hot tap close to the unit to drain it. Once the cylinder is drained, the

covers to the immersion heater can be opened to allow the immersion heater thermostat to be disconnected. To lift the immersion heater out, simply unscrew it and carefully lift it out so that any scale can then be removed. Take extra care to ensure the sealing surfaces are clean and undamaged, if in doubt a new immersion gasket should be fitted. Finally, replace the heater while making sure the immersion heater gasket isn’t trapped. Rewire, check, close and secure the housing cover to finish the process.
4 I Recharge the expansion volume The air volume within a cylinder should periodically be recharged to accommodate for expanded water. If water is intermittently flowing from the expansion valve then this indicates that the air volume has reduced so much so that it cannot accommodate expansion. To recharge, the heat source to the cylinder must be turned off as well as the water supply. This can be done by turning the isolating valve on either the pressure
parallel with the water flow. Once water is flowing from the hot tap again, it can be turned off. The air volume will now be recharged as the cylinder refills.
Servicing reminders
reducing valve or expansion valve. On a Megaflo cylinder, the blue handle needs to be turned so it is positioned at a 90-degree angle to the flow of the water. Following this, open the lowest hot tap supplied by the cylinder and hold open the temperature and pressure relief valves. This can be done by twisting the knob on top of the valve until the water stops and the gurgling sound at the valve stops. Now the pressure and temperature relief valves can be closed by releasing the knob, and the isolating valve can be turned on by turning the blue handle until it runs
Not all homeowners are aware that a cylinder requires an annual inspection. However, as a cylinder is a pressurised system, it does require regular maintenance by a G3 qualified engineer. A service will ensure the continued optimum performance of unvented cylinders. This is of particular importance in hard water areas or where the water supply contains particulate matter. On completion of any maintenance or service, the Benchmark Installation, Commissioning and Service Record should be filled in to record the actions taken and the date the work was undertaken. IT’S TO BE ENVIRONMENTALLY KIND Peter Dumigan, Managing Director of the Hultafors Group UK, looks at why sustainable workwear that’s also great for leisure activities will be high on the agenda for trade professionals this summer.
I
t’s nearly 150 years since Levi Strauss took the clothing world by storm with denim working clothes. Little did he know then that rugged looks, utilitarian garments and responsibly sustainable clothing would become one of the statements of the modern cool in fashion trends. For over 50 years, Snickers Workwear has been building a workwear trend that now delivers eco-friendly, technically advanced, innovative and high-quality working clothes that are built to last and look good at work and at play. In essence, workwear that can be used both on site, and for leisure activities too. Nowadays though, environmental considerations are more important than ever for Workwear and Footwear brands. Just as the effects of plastic waste on the environment has been brought to the centre of consumer consciousness in recent years, so the problems caused by the disposal of shoes and clothing are also coming to the fore.
Images of ‘ragpickers’ and animals feeding on waste clothing mountains in Africa are an increasing cause for concern as landfill sites become overwhelmed because we dispose of our waste on someone else’s doorstep. But it’s not just everyday consumer waste that’s causing problems. Thousands of tonnes of used clothing and footwear end up in landfill or on waste mountains overseas. It’s high time they were disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner so that ‘footprints’ can be maintained at levels that benefit everyone, not just the environment.
Tested to the extreme Snickers Workwear clothing is trialed from the arctic circle to the southern Mediterranean, tried and tested in extreme environmental conditions – cold, heat, wind
the new lightweight Polo and T-shirts are made of 100% recycled polyester with a bio-based, anti-odour finish and rain. But not only are these working clothes tested for performance, they’re now tested with regard to ‘Environmental Sustainability’. What makes these garments so appealing to individuals and corporates alike is not only the ergonomic body mapping designs but also the 21st century fabrics including the latest in recycled, organic and sports fabric technology. Design and development has always been driven by continual research into user needs and experiences in a variety of working environments and weather conditions, but nowadays recyclability and carbon footprint impact is a key part of that evaluation. So, it’s not just the physical

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
Keep it in the family Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, explains the benefits of opting for power tools that share a common battery platform.
T
hanks to advances in tool, motor and battery technology, the cordless power tools available today offer users a wide range of benefits including improved safety, efficiency and on-site productivity. With battery systems now capable of offering high output performance and run times, the popularity of cordless machines has grown substantially in recent years and for many, cordless options are now the go-to solution to tackle most site tasks.
An efficient choice To ensure that machines can continue to deliver optimum performance and efficiency, leading manufacturers have developed clever solutions to protect the machine and the battery during operation and charging. For example, Makita batteries and tools, and the batteries and chargers are designed to communicate with each other to provide overload and thermal protection as well as prevent over-discharging of the battery, which can be damaging and costly. Productivity gains can be had by adopting a tool system that uses the same battery platform. Afterall, when all machines can be operated using the same batteries (and charger), it becomes incredibly easy to switch between tasks, as the
batteries can simply be swapped from one tool to the next. In addition, using machines that are all powered by one battery platform makes it incredibly simple to ensure that the right tools and batteries are transported to site and charged. Taking this approach is also more cost effective, as there is no need to buy a new set of batteries with every new tool purchased, enabling users to opt for lower cost ‘body-only’ machines to expand their kit.
38 JULY/AUGUST 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Selecting the battery platform Many manufacturers will offer numerous battery platforms that each deliver different levels of output, so it is important to carefully consider what voltage is needed to tackle the majority of tasks. For example, Makita offers, 18V, Twin 18V (36V), 40VMax and Twin 40VMax (80VMax) options that are each suited to different tasks. Makita’s 18V LXT battery platform allows professionals to tackle the majority of jobs with ease, simply by swapping out the LXT battery. The range consists of over 275
038_PHPI_JULYAUG21_Layout 1 15/06/2021 11:45 Page 39
different tools including combi and rotary hammer drills, circular saws, angle drills and grinders – as well as useful on-site additions like work lights, wet-dry vacuums, radios and fans. For more demanding applications, Makita has developed Twin 18V LXT machines that are powered by two 18V LXT batteries that are used together to deliver 36V of power. As 18V and Twin 18V models all utilise the same LXT batteries, professionals can effortlessly switch between lower and higher demand tasks and tools. What’s more, the company’s Twin 18V LXT system allows batteries with different capacities and levels of charge to be used together. This means that a 6Ah battery and a 5Ah battery (for example) can be used to create 36V of power, maximising efficiency. If the batteries have different charge levels, the tool will simply stop when one battery is empty. For tasks that require even more power – such as breaking through concrete to
expose pipework – Makita has developed 40VMax or Twin 40VMax (80VMax) machines. These models have been specifically designed to handle more demanding applications by offering high output, durability and fast charge times, keeping users working for longer without disruption. Makita has also made it easy to integrate XGT 40VMax machines with existing collections of 18V LXT tools. 18V LXT batteries can be charged using the 40VMax XGT fast charger using a simple adaptor, meaning users can utilise both battery platforms and switch between tasks seamlessly. It is also important to make sure that the battery platform you invest in has a wide range of machines available – so you can always find the right tool for the job.

ULTRASONIC INNOVATION TO END WATER DAMAGE WOES
W
ith water damage proving to be one of the most frequently reported insurance claims, REHAU has unveiled a smart water control system using the latest in ultrasound technology – RE.GUARD. According to ABI, insurers pay out £1.8 million for residential water damage every day. Causes can relate to a number of issues such as corrosion, limescale and frost compromising old pipes, as well as accidental drilling of new systems. With drip-based leaks usually going unnoticed, and burst pipes then leading to severe damage, this new prevention technology will be of interest to many. The RE.GUARD smart control water system monitors the water flow rate assessing it in real time due to integrated software. The system is comprised of four
main components: a smart water controller, water sensors, a hub gateway and an app. The smart water controller helps to detect burst pipes and drip leaks by shutting off the water supply to mitigate damage. It is installed after the water meter which allows it to also measure water consumption, and has the ability to be manually turned on and off.
The controller is supported by water sensors which detect leaking water in critical areas even faster by being positioned throughout the house. They connect to the RE.GUARD smart water controller via the Z-Wave radio standard and an extension cable is available for places that are particularly difficult to reach. All devices are connected to the Internet via the RE.HUB gateway which can easily be connected to a home’s router. For more details please www.rdr.link/pb035

PRODUCTS IN PRACTICE
MAGNA HOUSING ADOPTS FERNOX FOR SYSTEM HEALTH CHECK
F
or domestic boilers to work efficiently, BS 7593:2019 and the Benchmark Commissioning Checklist recommend heating system inhibitor levels are checked annually and laboratory tested every five years. To comply with these regulations, Magna Housing, which is responsible for a wide portfolio of homes across the West Country, was undertaking postal laboratory analysis to check inhibitor levels when conducting its annual boiler services, or with new boiler installations across its properties. Recognising the opportunity to save significant time on the system maintenance of its properties Magna Housing agreed to trial the Fernox Express Inhibitor Test to check inhibitor levels as part of its annual checks. Heating Services Manager at Magna Housing, David Royle said: “Fernox has vastly improved our operations and streamlined how we’re able to manage and conduct annual boiler servicing for each of our properties. As a housing association, using the Express Inhibitor Test has made it easier than ever to comply with important boiler and heating system regulations whilst ensuring our customers’ boilers operate efficiently.” The Express Inhibitor Test is a dip test that determines whether central heating systems have the correct concentration of inhibitor almost instantly, providing a pass or fail result in just seconds.
Controlled via app The test results can also be managed and recorded with the Fernox Water Test app. When used with the Express Inhibitor Test, the Water Test app offers users a single resource to record annual water test results so that maintenance programmes across a wide range of different boiler systems can be managed and monitored. Engineers simply photograph the test strip using the in-app camera and select its colour to generate a pass or fail result. If the test passes a supporting ‘pass’ certification is provided and this verifies that the test has been completed and the system is fully protected. If a test fails, engineers can
46 JULY/AUGUST 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
immediately rectify issues whilst still on-site and re-test the system in order to generate the ‘pass’ certificate within the app. Following the trial, Magna Housing now plans to use the Express Inhibitor Test across almost 6,500 properties. For problem systems, the company will also use the Fernox Water Quality Test (also compatible with the Water Test App) for full laboratory testing on its properties, every five years, which provides a more comprehensive analysis of water quality and corrective action. Pip Barnes, Central Heating Team Leader at Magna Housing commented: “The Express Inhibitor Test is really easy and has meant our engineers can undertake vital system testing swiftly, therefore reducing time on-site and minimising disruption for customers. With this product, our engineers can now identify systems where inhibitor levels are low and remedy this issue instantly, all within one site visit. To put this into perspective, on average, 28% of properties require further treatment after initial water testing. By using the Express Inhibitor Test across our portfolio, we have the potential to eliminate the time wasted waiting for almost 1,800 return visits a year, as our engineers can now address system issues immediately, while still on-site.”

ATAG COMMERCIAL BOILER FITTED TO AID FITNESS AT GYM
A
200kW XL-W boiler from ATAG Commercial has been installed at Bannatyne’s Gym in Mansfield, helping provide heat and hot water to areas including the main gymnasium and café. The wall hung unit is also responsible for heating the swimming pool. The new boiler joins an ATAG Commercial XL140 fitted previously, which had replaced two aged and inefficient cast iron, floor standing atmospheric units. The two ATAG Commercial boilers have been working in unison for the last 18 months and were installed by Derbyshire-based plumbing and heating contractors STH Mechanical. Commenting on the project, Steve Hendley, Director at STH Mechanical, who fitted the new boiler himself, said: “I’ve been installing ATAG Commercial’s heating systems for 25 years; the XL140 is a great unit, so I was originally going to fit another one in the gym, as we needed to increase the output to 350-400kW with a second boiler. However, when I realised there was a newer model available, complete with dual heat exchanger technology, I was more than happy to opt for that instead.” The boiler is located at the rear of the property, not overlooking any other buildings, so the flue does not interfere with the neighbourhood surroundings. Steve added: “These new ATAG Commercial boilers have the lowest NOx emissions on the market, so are perfectly placed to help the gym benefit from lower fuel bills, especially when you compare them to the older, atmospheric models they replaced. These previous units could only have been around 60% efficient, whereas the new condensing units are much higher, especially the XL-W, which is 96% efficient; as a result, the ATAG Commercial boilers should be about 20% cheaper to run overall.”

ELCO DELIVERS UPGRADE TO OFFICE REFURB
A
s part of a major upgrade, ELCO Heating Solutions has supplied 15 TRIGON XL 570kW boilers to 10 Upper Bank Street in Canary Wharf. The new compact and highly efficient gas condensing boilers have replaced 21 ageing units. Comprising 30 occupied floors, four basement floors, special function suites, as well as a gym, swimming pool and auditorium – all spanning over 1 million sq. ft – 10 Upper Bank Street required a modern, high performance heating system to cope with the fluctuating demands of the building. To fulfil the system requirements, ELCO’s floor standing units were installed over three floors; four boilers on the 31st level, and an additional 11 divided between the fifth and sixth. The TRIGON XL is available in seven different models, with outputs ranging from 150-570kW. Their benefits include ultra-low NOx emissions complying with class 6 (2018) requirements, an 8 bar working pressure, 30K flow/return temperature differential, high seasonal efficiencies, and a compact footprint. The boiler’s low NOx emissions are achieved by utilising a commercially proven premix-burner system, which includes a fully modulating, water cooled cold flame burner. This is combined with an optimised combustion system and stainless steel heat exchanger to provide a reliable and robust lifetime performance – while also offering gross seasonal efficiencies up to 97.5%.

WIRQUIN NEO & NEO AIR The Wirquin Neo Air ‘Air System’ function acts as an integrated ventapipe air admittance valve (AAV) to prevent the rise of bad odour’s and noise in the pipes. When a vacuum is created in the pipes, it sucks in the air, but also the water contained in the trap which then causes noise and lets out bad smells. Thanks to Wirquin NEO AIR and its integrated ventapipe air admittance valve (AAV), the pipes are naturally ventilated: when a vacuum is created in the pipes the Wirquin NEO AIR membrane opens, creating ventilation and thus prevents the suction of the water seal. Since its launch in September 2018, more than 1 million Wirquin NEO traps have been sold. www.rdr.link/pb042
