Summer break ?

@professionalplumber

phpi@hamerville.co.uk

Summer is often considered a slightly slower time for heating engineers and plumbers, with the thoughts of many turning to some well-earned time-off.

Across the industry, perhaps also in preparation for a summer break, the last few months have seen several product launches and announcements about new initiatives. This piece is being written ahead of the InstallerSHOW in the last week of June, but it is likely that the halls of the NEC will bear witness to further announcements and launches. We’ll keep you across all of them in future issues and on our website.

In this issue, we look at the new Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) from Ideal Heating and Worcester Bosch, plus we find out about a new water pump from Grundfos and some new hand tools for plumbers.

We have spoken to Warmflow about the company’s new online learning platform, we hear about Salamander Pumps’ Cat 5 Tankboost and there is news of the opening of Mitsubishi Electric’s new training academy in Livingstone, Scotland.

The issue also features business advice and highlights the upcoming Gas Safety Week in September.

With a General Election upon us (perhaps it has taken place by the time you read this) the policy direction for the heating sector is slightly less clear than usual. However, there appears to be little doubt that all major parties will continue to decarbonise, shifting away from fossil fuels. With the heating sector responsible for around a third of emissions, of which domestic heating represents around 17%, the drive to tackle this will continue.

Householders know how important plumbers and heating engineers are, no more so when they suffer a leak or the heating goes off in the middle of winter. It would be nice to think the new government will feel the same way about the sector, as they too will be relying on heating engineers and plumbers to specify, install and maintain the low carbon heating solutions of the future. Following the general election, we will be able to see more clearly what will be expected of the sector in the coming years.

IDEAL HEATING NAMED AS SKILLPLUMB HEADLINE SPONSOR

The SkillPLUMB competition has named Ideal Heating as its new headline sponsor under a three year partnership agreement to provide support and equipment for the plumbing skills event.

Ideal Heating has been an established partner of competition organiser BPEC for a number of years via its training centres across the country. As part of this new relationship to support SkillPLUMB, Ideal will be providing boilers, unvented hot water cylinders and heat pump test rigs for the UK final.

Andrew Johnson, Training Director of Ideal Heating said: “By investing in SkillPLUMB we’re investing in young plumbers and upcoming industry talent, and importantly, introducing them to low carbon products such as heat pumps. This aligns perfectly with our wider company ethos of providing the best training and skills for all our installers across the UK. We look forward to this new collaboration with our established partner BPEC.”

Following a series of national qualifying heats the SkillPLUMB UK final will be held the week of 18th November in Greater Manchester.

HIVE AND DAIKIN COLLABORATION

Smart home company, Hive, and heat pump manufacturer, Daikin, have announced the first step in what they describe as ‘a long-term collaboration’ to make net zero easier by helping customers control their heat pump through the Hive app.

The collaboration will see Daikin Altherma 3 heat pumps integrated with Hive energy management technology, a move designed to provide customers with greater visibility and control of their heating system. This includes allowing homeowners to personalise heating schedules, track spending and set budgets, whilst also optimising their heat pump for use when electricity is cheaper and greener because there is low demand on the grid.

Both businesses will be trialing the integration later this year and have plans to roll out the product offering widely once the trial is complete.

Gail Parker, Low Carbon Homes Director – Heat Pumps at Hive, said: “As we integrate Daikin heat pumps with our market leading Hive technology, we are making electric heating affordable and simple by giving them the visibility they need to control their heat pump and energy usage.

Iain Bevan, New Business Director – Residential commented: “Daikin is excited to be working with Hive to fully integrate their smart controller technology with our market leading heat pump technology. This collaboration could help tens of thousands of people decarbonize their domestic heating, reducing their carbon footprint and help address climate change.”

SIMPLIFY HEAT PUMP INSTALLATIONS WITH NEW SOFTWARE

Baxi has teamed up with heat pump installer platform Carno, in a move designed to make it easier and quicker for installers to design and install ASHP systems in customers’ homes.

Installers attending Baxi’s Heat Pump Installer training course will receive an initial three month Carno licence, which can be extended for up to one year. Carno claims that its home renewables platform saves up to 10 hours per heat pump job by streamlining the processes around each installation. These include smart lead qualification, simple home surveying, intuitive system design tools and automated MCS administration.

Tim Wright, co-founder of Carno, explained: “Our intelligent platform saves Baxi’s installers time and allows them to focus on the heart of the project – installing.”

SNIPEF ELECT NEW PRESIDENT

John Doherty EngTech has been elected as the 100th President of the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers Federation (SNIPEF), with a call for more action to tackle the profession’s skills shortage and greater government engagement to advance the low-carbon home heating transition.

LATESTMCSDATASHOWSHEATPUMP INSTALLATIONSAREONTHERISE

MCS has announced that there were more than 4,500 certified heat pump installations in April, making it the third-best month for heat pumps in Scheme history.

The latest monthly MCS data shows that during 2024, April was the best month so far for the uptake of small-scale renewables. Ian Rippin, CEO at MCS, said: “The latest MCS data shows that during 2024, April was the best month so far for the uptake of small-scale renewables, with a total of 18,621 certified installations across the UK.

Commenting on his election as President, John Doherty said, “It is an honour to lead SNIPEF at this crucial time. Addressing the ongoing skills shortage in our profession is vital, particularly as the transition to low-carbon heating, crucial for hitting government net-zero targets, is significantly behind. This shortfall underscores the urgency of our mission and the critical role our profession must play.”

Background

Born in Dumbarton and raised in Clydebank, John was educated at Clydebank College, Cardonald College, and Glasgow College of Building and Printing. He is a qualified Master Plumber certified by the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), a certified Gas Technician through the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM), and a registered Engineering Technician (EngTech) with the Engineering Council.

In 1999, John founded John Doherty & Co Ltd. Based in Old Kilpatrick, West Dunbartonshire, the company employs 19 full-time employees and provides a wide range of building services to its clients, including Scottish Water, North View Housing Association, West Dunbartonshire Council and Hampden Park Stadium.

John’s presidency will run from 24 May 2024 until 23 May 2025.

“There were more than 4,500 certified heat pump installations in April alone, making it the third-best month for heat pumps in Scheme history. Average monthly heat pump installations this year are 32% higher compared to 2023, setting the stage for what looks to be another record-breaking year for the technology. It’s evidence that more homeowners are making the switch to low-carbon heating, bolstered in part through government initiatives such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

“The BUS, which requires installations to be MCS certified to qualify for the grant, remains a critical part of the drive to make low-carbon heating more accessible and affordable.” For near-real-time dynamic visualisations of the uptake of small-scale renewable technologies across the UK on the MCS Data Dashboard please www.rdr.link/pbf003

VIRGINEXPERIENCEDAYS ADDEDTOSTELRADLOYALTY CLUB OPTIONS

The Stelrad Installer Loyalty Club has seen Virgin Experience Days added to the list of options for installers cashing in their Loyalty points. Installers can now request vouchers towards experience days when they have collected their points from buying Stelrad radiators.

They could already exchange their points for radiator products, for Stelrad clothing and for a range of gifts including vouchers towards the weekly shop. In response to enquiries from installers up and down the country, the Virgin Experience Days vouchers have been added with immediate effect.

“We are always looking at ways of making the Loyalty Club even more attractive to installers,” says Stelrad’s Marketing Communications Manager Sarah Baker, “and this was a popular one to add from the many requests we’ve had to widen the list of options available to installers.”

KENSA SHOEBOXTAKES ROOT ATTHE SCIENCEMUSEUM

Kensa’s Shoebox Heat Pump has been added to the Science Museum Group collection. The company behind it says the ‘little white box’ is responsible for around a third of all UK ground source heat pump installations and is the first and only ground source heat pump to be included in the collection.

First launched in 2012, Shoebox heat pumps currently deliver green heat to thousands of homes. The British manufacturer has recently launched its successor, the Shoebox NX. Tamsin Lishman, Kensa Heat Pumps CEO, said: “Street by street, Kensa is cleaning up heating across the UK, bringing Ground Source Heat Pumps to flats, terraced streets, tower blocks, period properties and other supposedly hard-to-decarbonise homes and buildings, taking people out of fuel poverty, and making homes warm and comfortable through renewable technology.

“From heating tower blocks to terraces and new builds, the Shoebox is responsible for so much. Seeing our ‘little white box’ featured in this exhibition and immortalised in the Science Museum collection as a green heating pioneer is a remarkable achievement, but one this incredible product fully deserves.”

PART 5: HOW TO FIND, HIRE, AND RETAIN SKILLED TRADESPEOPLE

James Chillman, UK Country Manager for Fergus, gives PHPI readers five key strategies to consider when looking to expand your workforce effectively.

Navigating the challenges of hiring in the trades industry, especially within the heating and plumbing industry, requires more than just understanding the demand—it’s about building a team that has skill, can adapt and shows commitment.

Engage with colleges

Forge strong connections with local colleges. By offering apprenticeships or speaking at career days, you can tap into a pool of motivated individuals who are training in the specific skills your business needs. This not only fills your immediate hiring needs but also helps in shaping the future of the industry with well-prepared professionals.

Use social media

Today’s job seekers are online, and a vibrant social media presence can attract the right kind of attention. Use platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and even Instagram to showcase your company culture, recent projects, and employee testimonials. This transparency not only attracts potential hires but also markets your business as a desirable place to work.

Offer competitive pay

In a competitive market, ensuring your pay scales and benefits are attractive is crucial. Offer competitive salaries, health benefits, and opportunities for professional development.

Create a strong onboarding process

A structured onboarding process can significantly enhance employee retention. Make sure new hires feel welcomed and valued from day one, with clear job descriptions, expectations, and resources. Pairing new workers with mentors or offering a gradual introduction to the job can also ease their transition into your team.

Focus on retention

Employee turnover can be costly. Invest in keeping your top talent by listening to their feedback, providing ongoing training opportunities, and fostering a positive work environment. 1 2 3 4 5

ON THE MOVE

recently moved from running his own business to working for British Gas.

Being your own boss and running your own business is the dream of many installers, and small businesses are a major part of the heating and plumbing market. However, the pressures of running a successful heating and plumbing business can be significant. Finding work, being on-call at all hours of the day, chasing payments from customers and sorting out issues with the van are just some of the challenges faced by heating engineers that are also running a business.

After an apprenticeship and working for a plumbing company for a few years Eddie Yates, a 36-year-old Heating Engineer from Manchester, set up his own business in 2012 doing house renovations, bathrooms, UFH, landlord certificates, “a bit of everything really,” he explained.

Following the COVID pandemic – when he shut the business for a year – Eddie worked to re-establish it, spending a lot of time contacting his old customer base and building up his work again. Things were on the up, with Eddie employing a couple of

additional people, but, he explained, running the business had become too stressful. Eddie told us: “Tax costs were getting more expensive, chasing money, chasing payments at the end, people not paying, rising costs of insurances, van insurance, van running costs and people weren't paying the money for the job that you needed to keep your business running. Fighting for work, basically. It was a constant battle.”

He continued: “I did a lot for builders. They were often unreliable. They’d book you in, but then the jobs weren't ready and then you lose a day's pay.”

Van costs

As part of his work Eddie had contracts with two companies which meant he was travelling across the North-west. He noted: “I was covering a massive area... a lot of driving.”

He explained that with his high mileage, his van needed servicing more often and, together with fuel, his vehicle costs were rising. Then his van broke down. “I’d done 90,000 miles at this point and the cam belt was getting loose and then the brakes went on the motorway. That was when I lost a week's work, because I couldn't get there. I ended up hiring a van and that cost me more money just to get to work, so my work didn’t fall behind. Then there’s the cost of having it fixed.”

Eddie explained that his love of the job itself hadn’t diminished. He told us: “I love plumbing and heating. It’s my job. I enjoy having a problem and coming up with a solution to fix it.” However, the negative aspects of running a business were taking its toll.

“It's just the aspects of running a company. They don't teach these things in school, they don't teach you the business side or the tax side in the in your apprenticeship and you you've got to pick it up yourself.”

Over time, Eddie concluded that moving somewhere else might be preferable. “My wife and I had a conversation, and she was saying I was coming home more and more stressed, and I wasn't having as much family time as we wanted to have. For example, when we went on holiday my phone was constantly ringing. It would ring up until about 9:00 o'clock at night, and

SPECIAL REPORT

Eddie Yates

then it started ringing again from 7:00 o'clock in the morning, every day. My wife told me: ‘You are here physically, but you're not here mentally.’”

Making the transition

Eddie switched to working for British Gas in November 2023 after his wife spotted an advert for a Heating Engineer at the company. Following the interview process and a 10-day induction course at the company’s academy in Leicester, Eddie worked with a ‘buddy’ Heating Engineer for two months to get into the company’s way of doing things. He has been working on his own since early February 2024, during which time he has been field assessed. Eddie stressed: “He is not assessing you on your boiler knowledge and skills, he is assessing you on the safety side of the British Gas way of doing things.”

Since his move, Eddie has been working mainly on breakdowns and servicing with some heating upgrades.

And what was his initial reaction to the move? “It was a relief that I didn’t have all the stress. A massive relief.” Eddie explained that he no longer has to find work for himself, or price jobs, and he gets paid at the end of each month.

Ongoing support

One aspect which Eddie notes is the support available from colleagues within British Gas. “If you feel like you need help, there is help there. If you feel it is more than a one-man job, there is support there. If you are unsure about a boiler or a regulation you go on the chat and someone is there to help you. There is a massive network of help.”

Eddie is keen on taking more training and has recently attended a refresher course on electrics at the company’s academy in Leicester. He is also looking at taking an LPG course in the future and would like to further his qualifications.

So, looking back on his move from being self-employed to working for British Gas, how does he feel? “I think I’m doing alright at the minute,” Eddie says. “I was a different person last year. Even my mates have commented on it. I’ve got more time for people now.”

NEED A BOOST ?

Salamander Pumps’ introduced TankBoost around a year ago. PHPI chats to Mike Oxley, Training Manager at Salamander Pumps to discover how the product has been received and the benefits of the company’s new Cat 5 version.

QTankBoost was launched to the market just over a year ago, how has the product been received over the past 12 months?

TankBoost has been extremely well received by the market, our sales are exceeding expectations and feedback has been very positive, particularly on aesthetics and performance.

QWhy did the company introduce TankBoost?

TankBoost is an exciting extension of our MainsBooster range, which has been developed to ensure multiple outlets receive sufficient water all at once. It is the first product in the Salamander Pumps product range to deliver flow rates beyond 36 L/min, ensuring powerful showers, strong flowing taps, and quick toilet cistern replenishment, even when they are being used at the same time.

QWhat are the main features of the solution?

No matter the size of the household or the number of outlets running in the kitchen or bathroom, good water pressure and flow is a must have for homeowners. TankBoost will deliver flow rates up to 80L/min and pressures up to 3.0 Bar, ideal for even the busiest homes where showers, taps, toilets and more are being used at the same time.

QTankBoost has been designed to meet the water pressure and flow needs of domestic and light commercial installations, with four tank sizes available ranging from 100L to 450L, meaning solutions are available for properties of all sizes. Where a property has particularly high water demand, and space is not an issue, tanks can be linked with additional storage units to increase capacity.

How does the CAT 5 version of TankBoost differ from the rest of the series?

Installers should use a water tank with suitable backflow protection when there's a risk of contaminated water flowing back into the clean water supply, such as TankBoost CAT 5.

CAT 5 water tanks are suitable for commercial or industrial properties which may include laboratories, chemical cleaners, healthcare premises, abattoirs and animal grooming parlours. These carry the highest risk level of the most serious health hazard because of the presence of raw sewage or hazardous waste.

80L/MIN

ensuring that water only flows in one direction. Backflow refers to the undesirable reversal of water flow within a plumbing system, the main cause being back siphonage or back pressure.

This reversal can allow contaminated water or substances to flow back into the mains water supply, posing risks to public health and safety.A CAT 5 backflow risk poses a serious health hazard due to its high concentration of pathogenic organisms, radioactive elements, or extremely toxic substances.

Installers should use a water tank with suitable backflow protection when there's a risk of contaminated water flowing back into the clean water supply, such as TankBoost CAT 5

Q

What is a Type AB air gap?

TankBoost Cat 5 features an air gap between the inlet and outlet, preventing any backflow of water from the tank or cistern into the mains water supply, making it suitable for commercial use. These air gaps are Type AB which satisfies the applicable requirements of Water Regulations for Category 5 systems.

Q Can you use TankBoost to boost both hot and cold water?

TankBoost has been designed for cold water only, it can however be used to increase cold water flow rates and pressure to any mains hot water system such as unvented cylinders and combi boilers.

Q What are the pipework connections on TankBoost?

All TankBoost units have a ½” brass male inlet connection and 1” female outlet. It is recommended to have 28mm diameter pipework from the TankBoost so as not to restrict the potential flow rates from the unit. This can then be reduced to 22mm or 15mm pipework closer to the outlets.

PUMP ITUP

Grundfos has launched a new generation of its domestic water booster pump, SCALA2.

Low water pressure remains an issue for many homes across the UK, with affected homeowners and residents facing uncomfortable showers and trickling taps. Water booster pumps can provide a solution and Grundfos has recently introduced its new solution, SCALA2.

Boosting from tanks

Increases water pressure from roof tanks, break tanks and ground tanks, including rainwater tanks. The pump has dry run protection meaning that if the tank runs dry, the pump will stop and protect the installation.

The new pump is a fully integrated all-in-one water booster system. It contains pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive, and non-return valve in one unit. With an ability to adjust performance to the operating conditions, SCALA2 has been designed to, “make it easier for installers to meet their customers’ needs.” Featuring an intelligent pump control, SCALA2 offers what the company describes as, “perfect water pressure”, regardless of varying inlet pressure and multiple open taps. Installers can choose the setpoint that fits a customer’s home and water usage, and they will get this water pressure regardless of the inlet pressure to the home.

Boosting from wells

Pumps water from a depth of eight metres. The pump is self-priming and equipped with de-air and self-learning function, designed to ensure a stable supply from wells.

Less noise

Water booster pumps can be noisy and can take up a lot of space. This can be very inconvenient for homeowners, especially if the pumpisinstalled inside thehouse. SCALA2 tackles this issue head-on. Compared to the previous model the new generation SCALA2 features a 3 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure, which is perceived as a 50% reduction in noise by the human ear.

“SCALA2 is water-cooled and equipped with a super-silent motor, which results in a sound level of 44 dB(A) in typical use. This makes it one of the most silent water booster pumps in its class,” explained Dusan Savic, Global Product Manager – Boosting.

SCALA2 has been designed for residential buildings with up to three floors and eight taps. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation and has frost protection, protecting the pump from freezing, and an anti-cycling feature to protect against leakages in installation. Fully integrated with pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive, and non-return valve in one compact unit, SCALA2 is described by the company as a ‘plug-and-pump' solution.

Grundfos says that by selecting this efficient pressure booster over conventional booster pumps homeowners can reduce their energy consumption for water pressure boosting by as much as 40%.

scene filled with dirt and debris. That's where heavy-duty power tools come in, offering the muscle and durability needed to get the job done efficiently and safely.

One of the most significant advancements in the power tool industry has been the widespread adoption of cordless technology. Battery powered tools provide unparalleled mobility, freeing plumbers from the constraints of power cords and allowing them to navigate expansive job sites or complex environments like multi-storey buildings with ease.

Extended life

Thanks to innovations in battery technology, particularly with Lithium-ion batteries, cordless tools now offer extended life and immense power that can compete with their corded counterparts. The Multi Volt battery packs from HiKOKI, for example, have been designed to be light and compact and the smart connection technology of the battery pack enables it to identify whether it is being used in an 18V or a 36V device and adjust the voltage accordingly.

For plumbers who have to contort themselves into tight spaces or have to hold awkward positions, the latest tools come designed to ease that strain. Manufacturers are making their tools lighter, better balanced and equipped with features like anti-vibration systems to keep things smooth and less taxing on your body.

Safety-wise, features like Automatic Shut-Off take care of the tool for you, powering it down if it’s accidentally left on or if things start to heat up too much –great for avoiding accidents. Then there’s Reactive Force Control (RFC), which shuts the tool down if it’s pushing too hard against a jam, preventing kickback and keeping you safe. And with Overload Protection, you don’t have to worry about pushing your tools too far; they’ll shut down before overheating or damaging the motor.

Ben Stacey, Snickers

Workwear Product Specialist, looks at how installers can manage the risks from UV exposure on site.

WORK SAFELY IN THE SUN

Dimportant – not only for working efficiency, but also for UV protection in the summer. The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health estimates that outdoor workers can be exposed to over 80% more UV radiation than indoor workers and, if the UV index reaches three or above, sun protection measures should be taken. It may come as a surprise to some that the UV index regularly exceeds this level during the summer months in the UK. The link between skin cancer and sun exposure is now more widely understood and workers who regularly work outdoors are most definitely at increased risk from over-exposure to UV radiation. So why do some people who work outdoors in the UK not use sun protection cream and other sun protection measures – such as proper working clothes?

not only be uncomfortable, but hazardous. So, when the heat is on, it’s important that you take the necessary precautions to stay cool, dry, and well-covered. That’s where Snickers Workwear’s moisture-wicking, and UV-protective workwear can play an important part in your personal protection and wellbeing. When you’re choosing the right working clothes up for a hard day’s work outside in the summer, there are three important factors to consider.

Fabric technology

For summer working, choose workwear that is designed to create a kind of climate control system for your body. Snickers Workwear does just that. Designed to help you stay cool, the summer collection has garments that provide UPV40+ protection to make getting the job done as comfortable and safe as possible. Breathable fabrics deliver better ventilation and dry faster once they’re wet from perspiration. And even though cotton is thought to be a lightweight fabric, its high absorbency makes it dry very slowly.

Cotton garments drenched in sweat are uncomfortable.

Body temperature

In warm, sunny working conditions, you need clothes with exceptional breathability and ventilation to avoid heat stress. With that in mind, Snickers Workwear uses stretchable fabrics with 37.5 Fabric Technology. Patented particles in the fabric help your body maintain an ideal core temperature – a process of thermoregulation – by removing perspiration vapours before they can turn into liquid sweat. That means you can stay both cool and dry no matter how hot it gets.

Personal and environmental protection

Sustainability is a key part of Snickers Workwear’s design and development philosophy. It’s not just functionality, practicality and the physical demands on the body when working hard which are

adjustable and pipe wrenches, and their importance becomes even more pronounced in tight spaces. These wrenches allow for quick adjustments to their jaw width, enabling a secure grip on nuts and bolts of varying sizes without the need for multiple tools. Imagine a scenario where a plumber is replacing a rusted pipe under a kitchen sink, an area with minimal wiggle room. Here, the adjustable wrench becomes indispensable, adapting quickly to different fitting sizes, thus speeding up the repair process and reducing the physical strain.

bathroom for instance, the stubby combi spanner allows for sufficient torque in a tight spot, ensuring a secure and leak-free installation.

Effective lighting is critical and nothing beats the convenience of hands-free lighting in tight spaces. Head torches and neck torches provide focused light directly where it's needed, be it under a dark sink or in the shadowy corners of a loft during a late-night callout. These lights are indispensable for tasks like inspecting pipe connections for leaks or wiring a new thermostat in a poorly lit hallway cupboard. Vice and mole grips provide an extra set of hands in scenarios where a secure grip is necessary for cutting or tightening. These tools are particularly useful in loft spaces, where balancing tools, materials and personal safety can become challenging. For instance, when cutting old,

and personal safety can become challenging. For instance, when cutting old, non-compliant gas lines in a loft conversion, vice grips can hold the pipe steady, ensuring a clean cut with a hacksaw, thereby preventing potential hazards.

A compact hack saw is another essential tool for tight spaces. Its fine-toothed blade makes it ideal for cutting through metal and plastic pipes where a larger saw could not move.

Take flame

When it comes to installations or repairs involving metal pipes, a reliable gas torch is crucial. Jefferson Tools offers both propane and Mapp gas torches, catering to different heat requirements. Mapp gas torches, known for their hotter flame, are particularly suited for jobs requiring a durable bond, such as soldering copper piping for boiler installations.

The latest innovation from Jefferson Tools includes a high-precision soldering torch accompanied by heat-resistant mats. These tools are designed to enhance safety and efficiency. The torch provides focused heat with adjustable intensity, perfect for detailed work such as fitting

small components in a tightly packed underfloor heating system. The accompanying mats protect surrounding areas from heat damage and catch any drips of solder or debris, which is especially useful in finished homes where protecting the aesthetics is as crucial as the technical work.

Clean up

After completing the mechanical work, leaving the site clean is crucial, particularly in residential settings. A 20L vacuum is portable and powerful enough to handle sawdust, debris and even water, making it an excellent choice for post-job clean-up in tight spaces like lofts or basements. This vacuum not only helps maintain professionalism but also enhances customer satisfaction by minimising the clean-up work clients would otherwise have to deal with.

THE HIDDENCHALLENGE OF heat pumpadoption

Can the UK achieve net zero? Not without more heat pump installers –says Vishavjeet Sodhi, Head of Air Solutions, LG Business Solutions.

Heating and plumbing engineers have a vital role to play in the UK’s journey to net zero –which means their skills are likely to be in high demand in the future. The Government is aiming to decarbonise all sectors of the economy by 2050 and push forward the replacement of old, inefficient boilers with greener, cheaper-to-run heat pumps.

The heating of Britain’s 28 million homes currently generates almost one-fifth (18%) of the nation’s greenhouse gases. As it moves to cut carbon emissions to zero, the government wants to see up to 1.6 million pumps installed annually by 2035. It’s an ambitious goal. To achieve it, we need to train up more heat pump installers – fast.

Highly efficient

Heat pumps are considerably more efficient than traditional heating systems. Most top-performing boilers are between 90% and 94% efficient. Heat pumps are up to 400% efficient, producing 4kWh heat output for every 1kWh of electricity supplied – cutting the cost of keeping a home warm (or cool) by up to 75%.

This cost-saving is of considerable benefit to consumers and businesses during times of rising prices and energy insecurity. Once installed, heat pumps can be extremely reliable and will pay for themselves as the savings accumulate. Many customers can also take advantage of government-backed funding programmes such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which issues grants to replace conventional boilers with greener alternatives.

CO2 reductions

Pumps produce between 35 and 65% lower CO2 emissions than gas boilers, according to the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA). In the EU, fuel pumps have contributed to a reduction of nine million tons of CO2 emissions. When a heat pump is powered by renewable energy such as solar or wind energy, its annual CO2 emissions can drop close to zero.

Heat pumps enable people to become less reliant on fossil fuels, save money, and adopt an eco-conscious approach to heating their home. We expect more and more consumers to upgrade from old, expensive and environmentally unfriendly boilers as the benefits become clearer – posing a potential workforce issue that needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.

Installer shortage

As we prepare for an acceleration in demand and adoption, one major issue is looming on the horizon. Britain is currently facing what the innovation charity Nesta has described as a “massive shortage” of qualified heat pump engineers, with just 3,000 serving the UK currently. Another 27,000 are required by 2028 to achieve the government’s heat pump installation target. This shortfall is an opportunity for both existing engineers and ambitious people looking to undergo rigorous training to become qualified to install heat pumps. If the UK is to achieve its goal of net zero by 2050, government and industry will need to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps by creating a workforce with the skills needed to decarbonise domestic heating.

A future-proof workforce

To avoid a heat pump crunch, both industry and government must collaborate to ensure enough engineers are being trained in the installation and specification of heat pumps. This requires the upskilling of existing installer partners as well as apprenticeships to help new engineers join the workforce with the future-proof skills needed to roll out these sustainable technologies.

Industry academies have an important role to play. For example, the LG Business Solutions Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Academy provides training in the troubleshooting and maintenance of heat pumps. After completing their course, trainees have the qualifications they need to specify products correctly. They also have certifications to fit and maintain systems built by other manufacturers.

A sustainable career

will be able to work towards achieving its net zero ambitions.

When the industry takes the lead on training, it not only increases the pool of skilled professionals capable of installing and repairing pumps – but reassures consumers who are worried about the reliability of heat pumps that support is available if they require it.

Heat pumps are a key part of the net zero equation and there is a clear opportunity for stakeholders at every level. Companies will benefit from selling and installing more heat pumps. Individuals who gain the training needed to fit and maintain pumps will earn themselves an attractive and sustainable career. The government

There is work to be done. Building a skilled workforce is not an easy task and it cannot be postponed. But through improved apprenticeship schemes and industry support there is an opportunity to train the engineers needed for tomorrow. This will provide the chance to cut the UK’s emissions whilst creating greener jobs and a bright future for thousands of British people. Net zero can easily be a net gain for heating and plumbing installers.

NEW HYBRID HEAT PUMP FROM WORCESTER BOSCH

Worcester Bosch has announced the launch of what it describes as, “the next generation of home heating,” the CS5800i Hybrid Heat Pump. The product, it says, offers homeowners the instant heat, control and comfort they are used to by allowing a heat pump and boiler to work together. The company says the aim is to increase adoption of the low-carbon technology.

The new product, which was co-created with installers, pairs the CS5800i Heat Pump with the intelligent CS5800i Hybrid Unit. The solution harnesses natural energy for everyday heating needs and switches to a boiler for extra warmth during chilly spells or the colder months.

The company says that the CS5800i Hybrid Heat Pump comes at a perfect time as the country look towards electrified solutions – its higher-efficiency and carbon-friendly heating aids in the government’s sustainability plans whilst not causing any major disruption to homeowners.

Need for flexibility

Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Services at Worcester Bosch, said: “The way we heat our homes needs to be flexible if we are to reach our net zero targets. Heat pumps will certainly play a huge part in this, however many homeowners are put off by the disruption

By combining a heat pump with a boiler homeowners will ultimately see less disruption and also won’t need to adapt to a new way of heating their homes.

and cost retrofitting properties to accommodate the technology.

“This is where hybrid systems can make their mark. By combining a heat pump with a boiler homeowners will ultimately see less disruption and also won’t need to adapt to a new way of heating their homes. We hope the CS5800i helps homeowners across the UK make the shift to low-carbon home heating.”

David Ford, Director at F&P Plumbing & Heating Ltd, said: “The new CS5800i Hybrid Heat Pump brings a new form of innovation to the home heating market. The unique design allows the low loss header to be installed to the rear of the boiler and in an external wall, eliminating any space issues when installing. We feel that this makes the CS5800i Hybrid Heat Pump a more viable option than a heat pump for the UK market.”

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

‘Good manners cost nothing’ goes the adage, and in the skilled trades, bad manners can cost your reputation.

Tradespeople have always known the value of word-of-mouth, but customers are no longer just talking over the garden fence. One bad review online can cause a ripple effect that severely affects not just newenquires, but existing customer loyalty.

Conversely, a job well done will ensure repeat business, new leads and, importantly, that anyone searching for your services online will find exactly what they want – a trustworthy and reliable tradesperson, who is committed to customer service and will

Technical skills are a given in the building services sector – it is the added extras that help businesses truly stand out from the competition. Griff Thomas from GTEC outlines some simple and cost-effective ways that installers can add value to their services and leave a lasting impression on customers.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, make exceptional customer service your strongest asset. Unfortunately, tradespeople have a bad reputation when it comes to returning calls and showing up when expected. We get it – many sole traders or small businesses are run by skilled engineers, with no experience of business administration. Reliability is extremely important to customers, however, so consider hiring a virtual assistant or local expert, or even just downloading an app to reduce the admin burden and improve your service.

processes and technology, and answering their questions will help to prevent problems and ease misunderstandings.

Hands-on handover

Post-installation issues can take up a lot of time that you’re not getting paid for. Emails back and forth, phone calls to explain technical issues or site visits when controls have been fiddled with. This costly aftercare can be prevented by putting a thorough handover process in place, something that is particularly important for complex and unfamiliar systems, like heat pumps.

Clear and timely communication will also enhance your customers’ experience. Make sure they understand the scope of the work, timelines and costs before you start and provide regular updates throughout. Accept that you are the expert – many customers have a very basic understanding of heating systems and how they work. Taking the time to explain

Following commissioning, take the time to explain how that specific system works, demonstrate any maintenance tasks and provide written instructions, if possible. Follow up with a call a week or so later to discuss and resolve any issues. This hands-on approach to handover will give everyone involved peace-of-mind and leave customers feeling empowered and supported.

Short courses add value

The heating sector has expanded beyond gas boiler installations, and you can too. Demand for energy efficiency and low carbon measures like insulation, draughtproofing and renewables is high amongst homeowners carrying out heating upgrades or renovation works. By expanding your skill set, you can provide a more complete solution, and your customers will appreciate a complete home energy efficiency service with a tradesperson they can trust.

Upskilling doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming, many courses – even things like heat pump installation – take just a few days to complete. Skill specific courses reduce the time spent training and ease access for installers who want to enter growing markets. For example, solar PV for roofers builds on existing knowledge so that contractors can

enhance their business opportunities and meet increasing demand for small-scale electricity generation. With just one day’s training, you could add a potentially lucrative new string to your bow.

Funded training opportunities

Due to increasing pressure to meet net zero targets, funding is often available, for

example, the Heat Training Grant reduces the cost of heat pump training by £500. We currently deliver fully funded online insulation training for heating installers who want to help their customers stay warm for less. Practical days are also available for those who want to come and practise on our training rigs. By expanding your expertise, you can offer a more

complete home energy solution, with practical benefits that your customers will appreciate.

Network with your peers

Of course, at times you will encounter a job that requires skills outside your expertise. In these situations, being able to refer your customer to a trusted expert benefits all parties involved. If you’ve been in the game a while, you probably already know lots of local tradespeople but perhaps they need a bit of extra nurturing. If you are new to the trades, it is time to create some connections – online, at local events, even at your local training centre. Having a valuable network of engineers and installers increases your knowledge and enables you to deliver a more complete customer services, keeping money in your local economy and ultimately, leading to recommendations and referrals.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, make exceptional customer service your strongest asset

To guarantee or not to guarantee?

Appliances usually come with a manufacturers guarantee and competent persons schemes demonstrate your professionalism, but beyond that, do you offer a guarantee of your work? Some tradespeople may shy away from offering guarantees due to the perceived financial risks of having to rectify work many years down the line, but offering a guarantee sends the right message to customers, signalling confidence in your workmanship.

It doesn’t have to be complex—a basic satisfaction guarantee or a warranty on parts and labour can be sufficient. The key is to be clear about what the guarantee covers and to make sure you follow through on your promises.

By enhancing customer service and expanding your offering to deliver a more complete service, you can elevate your business without significant additional costs. Trades people that prioritise these practices, while remaining flexible to local demand for the latest technologies, will see their reputation – and their customer base – grow.

Cashflow MANAGEMENT

Late payment is a scourge of the construction industry and can be detrimental to a trade business’s ability to function properly.

Recognising the need to help speed up payment, Fergus, the job management software for trade businesses, has added ‘Fergus Pay’ and ‘Scan to Pay’ features to its software, which has been designed to simplify financial transactions and minimise delays in payments, ensuring a steady cash flow which is essential for business growth and sustainability.

“There are a hundred and one reasons why some customers don’t pay their bills and invoices on time, but most fall into three categories. The first type of late-paying customer is simply forgetful. The second type finds the whole bank transfer thing a hassle, which causes them to delay. The third type simply cannot or would rather not fork out the lump sum in one go,” explained James Chillman, UK Country Manager for Fergus

“Luckily, there is one easy fix for all three. With Fergus Pay, our smart credit card payment solution, every one of your

customers can send quick and fuss-free payments to you. You can even collect it from them on-site using the Fergus Mobile App. The more straightforward it is for them to do so, the sooner you’ll be able to pocket your hard-earned cash.”

Integrating payment processing with your job management streamlines the entire workflow from job scheduling to final billing

Issue invoices

Fergus Pay provides a way for tradespeople to issue invoices and receive payments swiftly. Installers can send digital invoices instantly, and customers can pay promptly using their credit cards.

Enhancing the functionality of Fergus Pay, the Scan to Pay feature utilises QR code technology to facilitate payments on the

job site. Customers can scan a QR code with their smartphone and complete the payment using their card.

This feature is included at no additional cost with Fergus Pay and the company says it eradicates the need for sending follow-up invoices and chasing late payments.

Faster payment

“Fergus users report getting paid up to twice as fast compared to traditional payment methods. This swift payment processing translates to better cash flow management and less financial stress. It’s also more convenient for your customers too,” explained James.

“Integrating payment processing with your job management streamlines the entire workflow from job scheduling to final billing, saving you time, reducing your administrative hassles and leaving more time for you to do the things you enjoy.”

To assist heating engineers in the installation, commissioning and servicing of its products, Warmflow has launched the Warmflow Connect Online Learning platform. PHPI spoke with the company to discover more.

ONLINE learning

QWhy has the company developed the new platform?

Our team of in house, customer support experts are always on hand to answer any queries that our engineer customers may have and talk regularly to customers about installation, commissioning and servicing requirements. Many of the conversations they have had over the years are not new, and in many cases, similar in nature. As a result, we decided to pool together all the regular challenges our engineer customers face daily and create a suite of helpful videos addressing those challenges.

We believe in providing heating engineers across the country with the education they need to install our high-quality products to a high standard. Through the Warmflow Connect Online Learning platform, we will be able to educate our heating engineer customers on the benefits of fitting Warmflow, as well as providing energy and time saving tips for improved, sustainable installation practices which will benefit their customers in the long run.

QDoes the new platform cover both the company’s liquid fuel boilers and heat pumps?

The plan is that the new Warmflow Connect Online Platform will be continually updated as we develop new products and new ways of working. It will provide technical educational opportunities for all products manufactured by Warmflow. This will include Warmflow’s Agentis Liquid fuel boiler range, Zeno Renewables Range and Nero Hot Water cylinder range. We will be covering topics such as running your Agentis liquid fuel boiler on HVO and installation, commissioning and servicing tips for our Zeno renewables range.

QWhat kind of content will installers find on the platform?

Over the past 50 years since Warmflow entered the market we have amassed a tremendous amount of experience in the manufacture, installation and maintenance of home heating appliances. We have pooled the experience and expertise of

our inhouse technical team as well as feedback from our many heating engineer customers and the Warmflow Online Learning platform will showcase this experience through a host of videos and written content which contains tips, training, walkthroughs and much more. The content will no doubt change over time as we develop new products and new practices as well as addressing specific customer requirements through feedback.

Q Do installers need to sign-up for the online learning platform?

Yes, installers will need to create an account to access the platform. This will allow us to gauge the level of content required on the platform. Heating, cooling and ventilation equipment is to be used to enhance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions as Chester Zoo partners with Mitsubishi Electric.

PARTNERSHIP TOCUTEMISSIONS

Chester Zoo has announced a strategic partnership with heat pump manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric, to decarbonise heating across its not-for-profit conservation zoo in Cheshire as part of its drive to reach net zero.

The partnership, which was announced at a recent event by Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan brand ambassador George Clarke, will see Mitsubishi Electric’s experts work with the zoo’s facilities and design teams to keep animals – like Chester Zoo’s endangered Eastern Black Rhinos – warm. They will also provide heating, cooling and ventilation equipment in other buildings

across the 128-acre site while reducing the charity’s carbon emissions.

“Right now we’re facing a global biodiversity and climate crisis. The time for action is now. That’s why it’s vitally important that, as a conservation charity that’s working to prevent the extinction of species worldwide, we lift our focus on sustainability to new heights. We know that we can’t be part of the problem that we’re trying to solve, and that’s where partnerships on sustainability are so important; collaborating to showcase best practice and inspiring others to act,” explained Jennifer Kelly, Head of Sustainability at Chester Zoo.

“Mitsubishi Electric is helping us understand the decarbonisation potential on buildings across on our site to help us meet our net zero targets. We’re proud to be leading the way on sustainability and inspiring others to do the same – the future of our planet depends on it.”

Heat Pumps

The partnership was developed following two successful projects utilising Mitsubishi Electric equipment. The first involved air source heat pumps, air conditioning and ventilation installed in the zoo’s new conference and events venue, The Square. The second saw one of its rhino habitats, home to the critically endangered Eastern Black Rhinos, heated by six Ecodan air source heat pumps, which are manufactured in Scotland. “We need to keep our indoor rhino habitat temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees, but their home has big open doors, allowing the animals free movement to their outdoor habitat, which can lead to significant heat loss. The air source heat pump solution deployed shows the potential for heat pumps to be successful in challenging and unique environments.”

SUSTAINABILITY
38 JULY/AUGUST2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

George Clarke, TV presenter, architect and Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan brand ambassador, added: “I’ve been talking for years about the power and versatility of heat pumps for different living environments. The air source heat pumps deployed at Chester Zoo demonstrate what’s possible and show that if heat pumps can work in our rhino habitats, they can work in residential and wider settings too!”

Partnership

Commenting on the partnership, Chris Newman, Net Zero Design Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Chester Zoo as a key sustainability Partner, and we see so many synergies with their ethos, especially on the sustainability and educational fronts.

“We’re working with the zoo’s facilities teams to reduce carbon emissions and deliver energy efficient comfort across a diverse range of buildings with internal climates from African savannahs to South American rainforests, which shows beyond doubt that there is a renewable solution that can help all of us get to net zero.”

Chester Zoo was opened in 1931 and is one of the UK's largest zoos. The 128-acre site in Chester, is home to more than 37,000 animals and more than 500 species.

REDUCE Water CONSUMPTION

Many households continue to face financial pressures as energy bills remain historically high. According to Water UK, the average annual water bill now stands at £473, causing consumers to increasingly consider ways on how to reduce water consumption levels in the home.

Alongside concerns about the growing expense of water for everyday use, consumer awareness of and interest in environmental issues is also on the rise. News headlines around summer shortages reinforce the importance of preserving stocks of a natural resource we all fundamentally rely upon.

As a result, overall household water consumption and, in particular, the role of the bathroom space is in the spotlight. Not wanting to compromise on a great showering experience, but mindful of the need to better manage the impact of their water use, consumers are on the search for bathroom product solutions that maximise water efficiencies, without compromise.

The technology included in the latest eco showers and showerheads means that installers can recommend proven water-saving options whilst guaranteeing a level of bathroom performance and luxury that end-users still demand. And, at a time when energy bills remain top of mind for many, less water used inevitably means less water that needs heating. Installers who can therefore proactively promote products with integrated sustainable technology will likely directly assist their clients to save money on their energy bills.

Water efficiency delivers both sustainability and financial benefits for customers, helping to better protect a valuable natural resource and support household budgets that are currently under pressure with the rising cost of living. Chloe Wesenlund, hansgrohe’s Channel Marketing Manager for Trade, outlines some solutions installers can recommend to reduce water (and energy) consumption in the bathroom and delight eco-conscious clients.

Smart technology

The first place to start when seeking to reduce water usage in the bathroom is to undertake the replacement of showerheads or other bathroom fittings with eco-friendly alternatives that are now readily available.

Many hansgrohe products benefit from EcoSmart technology, which keeps water consumption under control by reducing the flow rate to nine litres of water a minute at three bar pressure. This can save at least 43% of water compared to a conventional shower head.

EcoSmart ensures a constant water flow, even with low or fluctuating water pressure, to ensure user experience will remain the same. This has been proven through customer feedback too, with 9 out of 10 customers agreeing that the Pulsify Select S hand shower with EcoSmart technology still results in a great showering experience, despite using less water.

SUSTAINABILITY
42 JULY/AUGUST2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

What’s more, by switching to a water saving shower from hansgrohe, a four-person household could save over 1,500 kilowatt hours of energy per year linked to water heating purposes –amounting to around 8% of average total energy consumption.

This technology has also been taken one step further with the introduction of an EcoSmart+ option, available for certain showering products and basin mixers. For example, our latest design-led Tecturis S and Tecturis E basin mixer taps – when equipped with EcoSmart+ technology –can reduce water consumption to a maximum of four litres per minute at three bar pressure. This delivers a further 20% reduction in flow compared to hansgrohe EcoSmart products – while maintaining the same level of comfort.

Sustainable innovations

Ultimately, sustainability is not only about consuming less, but also about consuming smarter. We can make energy and water reduction readily available to consumers, and through well-thought-out design concepts, we can also influence

consumer behaviour to make daily sanitation rituals more sustainable.

For example, when using a basin mixer most of us will use the tap in the middle position for small hygiene tasks such as washing hands or brushing our teeth. However, on most basin mixers this means the hot water system will start up when the tap is in the middle position, when hot water isn’t necessarily required by the user.

With hansgrohe’s CoolStart technology, when the tap is set to the middle position CoolStart will only allow a flow of cold water, but once the lever is deliberately turned, the hot water will then be sent through the pipelines. This reduces the heating of water when not needed.

In terms of showering products, the next step in sustainable product design will see a combination of water and energy consumption technology with the specification of recycled and recyclable manufacturing materials.

For example, the new Pulsify Planet Edition is the latest in hansgrohe’s ever-expanding range of sustainable bathroom products. Equipped with EcoSmart+ technology, Pulsify Planet has

Many hansgrohe products benefit from EcoSmart technology, which keeps water consumption under control by reducing the flow rate to nine litres of water a minute at three bar pressure

just six litres of water flowing through the hand shower per minute, without compromising showering comfort.

It also considers the entire product lifecycle in the design with a handle created from recycled plastic. Made from end-of-life products, and rejects, which are then shredded and cleaned, recycled plastic is a cleaner alternative to petroleum and fossil-based primary plastics and means energy consumption is significantly reduced during production.

STUARTTURNER INTRODUCES STORMBOOST

Stuart Turner Group has released a new water boosting pump called STORMBOOST. Designed for domestic properties, it will increase mains water pressure by up to 2.5 bar.

Alongside its MONSOON water pump which can boost water outlets by up to 4.5 bar across the home, feeding from tank and cylinder systems, STORMBOOST connects directly to the mains water supply and offers a maximum output flow rate of 12 litres per minute for improved water performance across the home. It has automatic on/off switching, anti-vibration hoses, anti-vibrationfoot for quiet operation, an on/off power indicator light and a five-year extended warranty.

Dominic Hill, CEO for Stuart Turner Group, said: “We know from recent research undertaken by the University of Surrey, Bristol and Swansea that increased water pressure across the home can help to reduce water consumption, and in turn energy consumption. Through installing sensors, they analysed over 86,000 individual showers over 39 weeks and found that users turn off the shower when a desired sensation has been achieved, not just when a set of actions are completed. Although water pressure is higher, less water is used as the shower is turned off earlier.

“Showers are the largest user of water across the home, with £2.3 billion spent annually on heating water for showers across Britain. Water is a precious commodity, and it's projected that England will face a water supply shortfall of 4 billion litres daily by 2050. By using a water boosting pump such as STORMBOOST or MONSOON, this will help consumers to reduce their water and energy, and in turn save them money while helping to reduce household water consumption targets from 144 litres per person per day to 110 litres per person per day.”
