Welcome innovation Have you ever experienced a real ‘Eureka’ moment – when inspiration descends from the heavens in a flash and a new discovery is made? The word itself, which translates as ‘I have found it’, is usually attributed to the ancient Greek inventor Archimedes who, so invigorated by a discovery he made in a bath, reportedly jumped out of the tub exclaiming ‘Eureka!’ and ran naked through the streets of Syracuse eager to share his news. While I’m pretty sure few inventors of this day run naked through their local streets, finding a solution to a problem previously shrouded in darkness must be an uplifting moment. In this issue we talk to two plumbers, one from West Yorkshire the other based on the south coast, both of whom have come up with new solutions that could be of use to others in the sector. The first is a handy multi-tool, the second a van security alarm – and you can read more about each on pages 38 and 42 respectively. Whilst the two solutions themselves couldn’t be more different, both are a result of innovation – which as we all know is often preceded by necessity. Another area of the market where necessity has brought about innovation is training. With Coronavirus restrictions and lockdowns negatively impacting face-to-face training, many providers and product manufacturers turned to online training, enlarging dramatically their pre-Covid digital options. Many report that these opportunities have been well-received by installers, which is perhaps in part due to their convenience. Instead of travelling to a physical location, spending time away from core working opportunities, plumbers and heating engineers can simply ‘log-on’ whenever suits them, from the comfort of their own home. Whether or not this trend will continue in a post-Covid world remains to be seen of course. But to gauge the kind of digital training now available to installers we have spoken to a couple boiler manufacturers and training providers. You can read more from page 28. With the pandemic dramatically affecting many businesses it is heartening to hear that the sector remains highly innovative – from individual plumbers, right through to large manufacturers.

CIPHE WELCOMES GREEN TARGETS The CIPHE has welcomed the drive for energy efficient buildings and the path to net zero carbon emissions. Recently, Housing Minister, Chris Pincher, announced a series of ambitious new targets for a green building revolution. Designed to lower energy consumption and help protect the environment, the new standards will affect all homes and businesses – © Adobestock / magann existing and new build. The new targets include measures to ensure all new buildings are constructed to be highly energy efficient and building work in existing buildings must meet new standards. Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) said: “The CIPHE welcomes the drive for energy efficient buildings and the path to net zero carbon emissions. However, these new standards are being introduced rapidly, into an industry fighting the effects of Covid-19, problems with the supply chain and a training crisis. To be successful, the industry has to work together and support must be given to help deliver on Government aims.” The Government has also announced a consultation on higher performance targets for non-domestic buildings, which will mean buildings will be zero carbon ready by 2025. The Future Building Standards consultation will run until 13th April. www.rdr.link/px002 To access it Kevin continued: “Installers are at the forefront of environmental change and need to be involved in the process. The CIPHE is urging all those with an interest in higher performance targets for non-domestic buildings to take part in the Future Building Standards consultation, before it closes on 13th April.”

The Milky way Kent based Marshall Heating Ltd looks to develop renewables alongside its expertise in oil and gas heating.

B

ased in Cranbrook and serving customers throughout Kent and Sussex, Marshall Heating was established in 2004 and now employs three full-time heating engineers who work alongside trusted sub-contractors to fulfill the requirements of their customers, from installation work through to servicing and maintenance. Milky Marshall, Managing Director, entered the heating industry back in 1979 when he started out as an apprentice for British Gas. “I completed my apprenticeship and continued working as a Gas Heating Engineer until 1992 when I started working as a Gas Safety Inspector for the original CORGI regulatory body,” he explained. “In this role, I met many installers and engineers who worked on both gas and oil boilers and it was around this time that I broadened my experience within the industry and started to explore the oil side of things.”

we are implementing a renewable product training programme to take Marshall Heating into this sector 10 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

In 2000, Milky took his first formal oil training and assessments and worked as a Gas and Oil Safety Inspector for a housing association for four years. “It was in 2004 that I decided to throw caution to the wind and start my own company, and that was the start of Marshall Heating. Since that initial leap, I have gone on to train and employ several men and women who have all gained their formal qualifications in oil, gas and general plumbing. My ethos has always been to try and put something back into the industry that has given me so much.”

Boiler installation We caught up with Marshall Heating on an oil boiler installation in the picturesque rural village of Benenden, Kent. The job involved the removal of the old system boiler which had developed a water leak and was beyond repair. “The boiler had been heating a small annex with four radiators and an unvented hot water cylinder so, when it was clear that the previous boiler needed replacing, I met with the customer and discussed the various options available to them,” explained Milky. “These included a replacement wall mounted boiler, external boiler, or internal floor mounted boiler, and whether to stick with the existing system boiler set up or to go with individually sited sealed system components. “The customer did not want the boiler sited outdoors so, following our discussions and my survey, the decision was made to supply and install a new Grant Vortex Eco Utility 15-21kW boiler with a low level EZ90 flue kit. A new

magnetic filter that was installed, will serve to protect the entire central heating system from debris and magnetite. After commissioning the system and completing the relevant paperwork, the company also carried out the relevant notifications including registering the boiler for its five-year guarantee that, as G1 Installers, it can activate on the product.

Renewable heat

expansion vessel and sealed system kit with a 2.5bar pressure relief valve were also fitted adjacent to the boiler with the expansion vessel being purposely oversized to allow the customer to change the radiators for larger volume, more stylish models at a later date.” Once the installation was completed the system was fully flushed, the system water was tested and a corrosion inhibitor was added to the system which, alongside the

Milky says he actively watches the marketplace and evaluates new products and technologies, particularly with regards to renewable heating systems. “Looking to the future, we are implementing a renewable product training programme to take Marshall Heating into this sector in the coming months and years. We will be working with Grant UK even more on this thanks to its training and the renewable products it offers too.” For more details about Grant oil boilers www.rdr.link/px010

HANDY HACKS Wavin has introduced a series of ‘handy hack’ videos demonstrating how to save time on tricky jobs.

F

rom pipes that you can’t quite reach, to bends that won’t fit into tight corners – many plumbers will have been there, scratching heads wondering how to tackle an awkward job. To help, Wavin has launched a new series of handy hack videos, giving plumbers a step-by-step guide on how to use its range of products. These videos are designed to help plumbers develop their skills, get jobs done quicker and make tricky jobs a lot easier to handle.

Wavin has launched a new series of handy hack videos Tech support The series is presented by former plumber Steve Harris, who’s now a technical support engineer at Wavin. The videos cover both Wavin Hep2O and Osma products, and installers can check them out on Wavin’s YouTube channel. In the meantime, here’s Wavin’s simple guide to some of the hacks.

Hack 1

One-handed HepKey 쑿

If you find yourself working in a tight space and can only work one-handed, the HepKey Plus is a really handy piece of kit to have in your back pocket. It is specifically designed to help plumbers to remove fittings one-handed.

Hack 2

The Hep2O Blanking Pegs are great little capping tools, which feature coloured discs that label the hot or cold, and flow or return pipes. You might have assumed that this tool can only be used once, when in fact it can be reused lots of times.

Hack 4 Flexible Pan Connectors for awkward spaces

Demounting fittings that are close together

If you need to demount pipes that are really close together, using the HepTool can help you to get into these awkward spaces. This slimline spanner can also help with fittings that are close to walls, and is ideal for when access is restricted.

Wavin’s Osma Flexible Pan Connectors have been designed to help plumbers fitting toilets in a tight space. They bend and hold their shape, so they can be moulded into any size corner. They’re also shaped like a concertina so they can be stretched or squeezed to any desired length.

Hack 3

Hack 5

The Osma Flexible Waste pipe is a flexible smooth bore pipe that can be cut to the length you need. It features end adaptors that are solvent welded in place and can be used on both push-fit and solvent welded fittings.

Hack 7 Using HepvO as a Bath Trap

Connecting the condensate pipe into a nearby waste pipe

With the Condensate Pipe Clamp, you can easily connect a condensate pipe directly into any nearby waste pipe. No matter if it’s a 32mm, 40mm, push-fit or solvent weld, this piece of kit works on them all.

Hack 6 Using adaptors with the Flexible Waste pipe

Hack 9 Using HepvO

To make your life easier, you can use lots of different adaptors (including both push-fit and solvent weld options) with the three metre Flexible Waste pipe. These can be glued onto the ends, but before doing so, make sure you clean both the exterior of the adaptor and the interior of the pipe with a solvent cleaner. Once you apply the glue, it will dry in five minutes but it’s best to wait at least 24 hours before letting any water run through the pipe.

If you find that there isn’t enough space below a bath to install a normal Deep Seal P Trap or even a standard Bath Trap, you can opt for the HepvO Valve with a Knuckle Bend Adaptor. This creates a horizontal valve which can easily fit below a bath, and can then be connected to the waste pipe.

Hack 8

If you’re dealing with discharge from unvented cylinders, you can easily run it into a nearby soil pipe by using the Tundish Adaptor Kit, so saving both time and product. The kit includes the HepvO valve and the Tundish Adaptor, and when joined together you can use the products to connect the waste pipe to the pressure release valve via the tundish adaptor.

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

WHAT’S NEXT FOR

boiler plus ? Three years on from its introduction in 2018, there may still be some confusion around Boiler Plus and how it impacts the day-to-day work of heating engineers. With more changes to Boiler Plus likely coming in the future, Remi Volpe, Managing Director at Drayton addresses some of the common misconceptions and looks ahead at what may be coming next.

H

ere in the UK, we remain very much committed to meeting the Net Zero targets set out for 2050. So far, a number of steps have already been introduced to help the nation on this journey, such as the Future Homes Standard, which requires all new-build houses from 2025 to utilise low-carbon heat sources like electric and hybrid heat pumps, rather than traditional gas boilers. Legislation such as Boiler Plus was introduced as a starting point to help improve the efficiency of existing properties that rely on gas boilers, whilst alternative heat sources are being agreed upon.

Current requirements Since the introduction of Boiler Plus in April 2018, each of the 1.67million gas combi boilers sold and installed need to have an efficiency rating of at least 92% and be fitted with time and temperature controls as standard practice. In addition to

14 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

this mandatory requirement, Boiler Plus also states that at least one of the following four additional energy efficiency measures must also be installed. ● Flue Gas Heat Recovery unit (FGHR)

This additional fitting works by repurposing the hot flue gases leaving a combi boiler. By taking these gases, which are often around 50º - 70º, the reclaimed heat is used to heat the incoming water, helping to save energy. ● Load compensation

Many modern electronic heating thermostats currently use on/off load compensation. This method of heating adjusts the average water temperature within the heating system by cycling the boiler On and Off periodically to ensure the correct system return temperature. In this setup, the boiler output temperature is fixed.

014_PHPI_MAR21_Layout 1 01/02/2021 11:45 Page 15

Ideally, heating engineers should also look for OpenTherm modulating heating controls when installing an OpenTherm boiler. In these systems the boiler is on constantly during the on period, rather than cycling, with the output temperature being adjusted according to the system requirements. ● Weather compensation

Weather compensation works by monitoring the outside temperature and adjusting the heat schedule accordingly to ensure the home reaches the desired temperature without overshooting, helping to reduce wasted energy. ● Smart control with automation and

optimisation Found in smart controls such as Wiser, automation and optimisation combine technology like load and weather compensation to understand the thermal properties of a building, again adjusting when the boiler should fire to help save energy.

For example, Wiser’s Eco Mode combines optimum stop and weather compensation to adapt heating schedules according to changing weather conditions, while its Comfort Mode uses optimum start to learn how long a home takes to heat up, adjusting schedules to reach the desired temperature at the ‘on’ time.

What’s next? Boiler Plus is currently under review and a number of additional points are expected to be introduced to improve the legislation. Currently, Boiler Plus relates only to combi boilers, and whilst they account for 78% of the market, the remaining 22% presents a

2050

The UK has committed to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to Net Zero by 2050

large opportunity to further improve efficiencies. It is expected that the legislation will be extended to cover other types of boiler going forward. It is also predicted that the updated requirements will be extended to include new additional measures, such as hydraulic balancing; a decision that was avoided first time around due to the skills gap, with just 18% of installers at the time undertaking this as standard practice. Hydraulic balancing is an essential part of any installation process. A balanced system will supply an equal flow of hot water to each radiator throughout the house to maintain comfort and ensure the system works efficiently. These flow rates can be set via the valve where thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) are in place, and the Drayton TRV4 balancing key makes this possible. However, it’s clear that more education will be needed to explain these benefits to homeowners, as during initial consultation on Boiler Plus, 57% of respondents said that customers were not aware of the benefits of TRVs or how to effectively use them. Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) were also overlooked by Boiler Plus back in 2018. However, with the expected transposition

installers are the key to unlocking consumer awareness of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), they are likely to become mandatory with boiler installations and during the construction of new builds. As always, installers are the key to unlocking consumer awareness. The success of implementing new and updated policies like Boiler Plus requires new understanding from customers – and installers are best placed to explain the benefits when retrofitting boilers. Many households will be looking for advice on how to reduce their energy bills and will rely on installers for guidance and information, so there is a great opportunity for knowledgeable engineers to advise consumers on policies like Boiler Plus and how they can help. ‘CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC’ 2020 was a uniquely challenging year. With uncertainty around how 2021 will pan out continuing, in January PHPI sat down (virtually) with Graham Russell, MD of Viessmann UK, and Darren McMahon, the company’s Marketing Director, to discover how it has adapted during the pandemic, and what installers can expect from the company in the months ahead.

‘‘I

cannot overstate how awful the pandemic has been for some. What we have done is grasped the best of it and made it a priority to look after our people, keep them safe and keep them employed,” Graham Russell, the UK MD of Viessmann told us during a virtual chat in mid-January. It is a sentiment likely to be shared by many businesses throughout the sector – whatever their size. For Viessmann grasping ‘the best of it’ included recruiting more people to work in the business and staying in close contact with its installers to understand their needs and requirements. The company also shifted its training online, with installer engagement almost doubling. Marketing Director Darren McMahon told us: “we had a very face-to-face training package offer

and digital was on our horizon, but we had not quite got there by the time the pandemic restrictions hit. We had our hand forced with the changing environment and in retrospect that was really good for us. We geared up very quickly with converting our courses from classroom courses to online environments.” Graham Russell went on: “We have continued our commitment to high quality technical content, not sales sessions. I think that is what a lot of installers appreciate. We are investing, going forward, in better quality equipment to maintain that, so we can give even more detailed technical knowledge to installers, and I think installers quite like it. They can have a couple of hours on a session without having to take a day out of their life

to go and visit the product, they can look at it virtually and learn most of what they need to know without any down time. I think that has been a real benefit to installers.” The company plans to incorporate much of what it learned in 2020 into its future operations. Graham told us that 2020 was, “a pivotal year for us as a business and we will retain a lot of what we learnt and take it forward with us. We are robust, sustainable and looking forward.”

Brexit deadline As the end of the year approached the Covid crisis combined with the Brexit transition deadline. Graham explained that Viessmann had been prepared for the UK leaving the EU up to two years in advance, and although they were concerned, the impact on the business was minimal. “I think there was a perfect storm back in December of Brexit and Covid which created some bottlenecks – that was widely reported in the media,” explained Graham. “We had a small bottleneck, a couple of trucks didn’t arrive, subsequently they are arriving. We have been very prepared since the end of 2018 for this. We have done all of the things we needed to do. We have product leaving Germany Thursday/Friday last week and arriving yesterday (Monday). It’s OK.”

New products Turning to 2021, Viessmann has plans for launching a number of new products in the coming year – many of which are designed to bring greater levels of control to end users, delivering a ‘smart’ offering to a wider audience. Graham Russell said: “We have new ranges of gas boilers coming in this year, both mid-range and entry level at two different points in the year, and the key difference with them is that they come WiFi enabled and also have RF built in as standard, for communication with a brand new suite of controls.” He continued: “The installer will get the benefit of things like a commissioning app, they will be able to get all their controls in one place so whereas at the moment they may be fitting our boiler with a third party suite of WiFi receiver, room sensor, TRVs – they’ll be able to get that all in one place, so that obviously gives a convenience factor.” New products have also recently been introduced – and more are scheduled to follow in 2021 – in the company’s heat pump offering, notably the Vitocal 100-A air source heat pump. Graham Russell noted: “We are very much interested in, and supporting the energy transition from fossil fuel to electric and a big part of that will be heat pumps. At the end of last year we soft launched our entry level Monobloc heat pump to the market. Later in the year we are planning to extend the range of our

heat pump offer. We are actively engaged as a stakeholder in that market.” The Vitocal 100-A air source heat pump is an integrated outdoor unit that does not require a complementary indoor unit. It has been designed for ease of installation in the standard British heating system. The monobloc design means installers are not required to work on, or connect any, refrigerant-carrying parts; therefore, a refrigerant certificate is not required. Six versions are available with outputs ranging from 6 to 16 kW.

Energy transition Alongside its heat pump solutions Viessmann is also engaging with alternative fuels, notably Hydrogen. “We have a very close eye on what is developing in the hydrogen market and believe that there is a place for it,” said Graham. “There are many, many applications where a heat pump wouldn’t physically be viable in small properties due to the requirement for stored hot water and those things, and direct electric wouldn’t be efficient, so we would see hydrogen as a viable replacement for a methane gas

18 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

boiler or in the transition to a blend of hydrogen in the existing gas grid.” However, a fully hydrogen boiler may not be so likely in the short term. “The horizon for 100% hydrogen in the UK as a primary energy source is quite distant, I think we are at least a decade away from that,” explained Graham, “but the blended hydrogen – up to 30% mix in the existing grid is a more real potential, and by the end of 2021 all of our domestic gas products will be capable of burning that fuel blend.” As part of its commitment to an energy transition, Viessmann will appear as a supporting partner at the Sustainable Innovation Forum as part of COP26 in Glasgow in November.

Crystal ball Looking ahead both Graham and Darren are feeling positive about Viessmann’s position in the sector. Graham said “We are cautious for obvious reasons - cautiously optimistic. We have had quite a strong start, but it is looking OK. We are fortunate that we are in a market of need rather than want. We are in a sustainable robust industry. The RMI market is very robust. I would see mid-year as potentially a turning point and we will be evaluating constantly how we are progressing within that.” Darren summed up the company’s position: “Brand reputation is good, strong, brand awareness is increasing and we have new products with additional features. It is cause for optimism and we wait to see what happens externally.” For more details on Viessmann www.rdr.link/px013

E le ct ri c fu tu re ?

With interest in electric heating likely to increase in the coming years, PHPI asks Bill Walters, Managing Director, The Electric Heating Company Ltd (EHC), about the possible changes to come and the company’s view on the opportunities ahead.

Q

2020 was a year unlike any other. How has the pandemic affected the electric heating market and your business? The pandemic has undoubtedly influenced the economy. However despite the uncertainty it would appear that electric heating is demonstrating robust growth. This in part is due to the forthcoming legislation changes which has encouraged interested parties to take a closer look at the advances and increased product offerings within the electric heating market. At EHC we have experienced a significant upturn in sales resulting in a record turnover for 2019/20.

Q

Do you think the government’s recent commitment to a Green Industrial Revolution will stimulate interest in electric heating? We are already witnessing a significant growth in design requests for a host of project types which historically may have used gas boilers. As the carbon footprint for electricity in the new SAP 10.1 calculation is so close to natural gas, the introduction of electric heating is the way forward for future apartment blocks and homes which are ideally suited to the controllability offered by electric heating technologies.

Q

Q

We have an excellent Technical Department which is well manned to offer advice and solutions dependant on requirements for all our clients. We also offer a Design Service to assist with product selection and heat loss calculations for new-build projects. Our AHC Accredited Scheme has become very popular throughout the UK with Installers committed to installing and servicing electric heating products.

During our early years we experienced resistance to electric heating because of outdated storage heaters and the associated running costs. This resistance is becoming a thing of the past as it is now common knowledge that electric heating provides heat on demand 24/7 and with the advances of smart technology and requirements of Lot20 which offers increased controllability. There is also wider scope to source improved electricity tariffs from a host of providers.

What kind of resources do you have available to help installers who may be unfamiliar with electric heating become more knowledgeable and confident with the technology?

What do you feel are the main misconceptions about electric heating and how would you address these?

Q

Although all installations are unique what are the main considerations heating engineers need to be aware of if they are installing electric boilers?

Installing an electric boiler is very similar to installing a gas boiler, however it is very important to calculate heat loss requirements to ensure that the main fuse within the property is capable of coping with the boiler output. It is also essential to be mindful of the cable sizing to ensure it is sufficient for the boiler rating. In the event that there is an electric shower in the property it is good practice to install our Shower Sensor to ensure that the electric boiler and shower do not operate at the same time.

Q

Is a specific type of cylinder required to work with an electric boiler?

It is possible to install a direct cylinder in properties that have electric boilers as the main heat source. An indirect cylinder is more popular in properties where there is a requirement for larger amounts of hot water. We recommend an ’S’ Plan

it is very important to calculate heat loss requirements to ensure that the main fuse within the property is capable of coping with the boiler output. configuration as it provides the end user with ‘heating only’, ‘hot water only’ or both at the same time for total controllability. Using an S plan also gives you the option to store free energy where a PV system is installed where a diverter can send free power to the cylinder saving money and energy.

Q

Although not hugely common, do you have a solution that can help properties with aging Warm Air installations? Anyone looking to replace old Warm Air Heating systems with the latest highly energy efficient technology may want to

EHC explains one way to replace warm air heating The advantages of Warm Air heating are frequently overlooked as homes built over the last thirty years have generally tended to be heated by gas or oil-fired boilers connected to radiators. However, back in the 1950's domestic Warm Air heating had become the first popular residential heating system. Now there is a need to replace aging gas fired Warm Air heaters. This may be in a tower block or a single residential property. Unfortunately, many of the existing Warm Air heaters are now obsolete and the replacement of them with a similar system can be difficult. Those looking to replace old Warm Air heating systems with the latest highly energy efficient technology may want to consider an EHC Comet Electric Boiler & Aquair Heat Interface Unit (HIU). A boiler/Aquair package can replace existing warm air heating operating on gas or oil. The new package can utilise the existing warm air ducting system, cutting down installation time and inconvenience. For further details

consider the advantages of an EHC Comet Electric Boiler & Aquair Heat Interface Unit (HIU). This is possibly the most unique and versatile HIU package available and will provide all the benefits that a centralised heating system can offer, but with a host of additional advantages.

Q

Are your electric heating solutions backed by a warranty?

All our Electric Boiler Products offer a standard 2 Year Warranty. We also offer Extended Warranty Schemes which vary dependant on product type. For more details on The Electric Heating Company (EHC) www.rdr.link/px015

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

UNDER CONTROL Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien UK, looks at the control aspects of a boiler installation and why installers should consider proprietary systems provided by manufacturers, including the latest smart devices.

W

hen it comes to fitting a new boiler or heating system, or even refurbishing an existing one, there are many things for installers to consider. This includes the output and efficiency of the boiler itself, as well as other key parts of the system – especially the controls. After all, with so many new devices being introduced to the market, tech-savvy homeowners will be keen to utilise the latest technologies to

ensure they benefit from reduced energy use, lower fuel bills and added peace of mind. As a result, awareness of smart heating controls is increasing, with AMA Research predicting that around 45% of all heating controls will be ‘smart’ by 2022. Before exploring any high-tech gadgets, however, installers should first assess the controls already incorporated into the boiler itself, to evaluate the functionality available. One of the key aspects to

installers should first assess the controls already incorporated into the boiler itself consider in terms of controllability is whether a new boiler features a text-driven display. This ensures commissioning and servicing is simplified, as all the essential information – from setting the time/date, through to the complete set-up procedure – is all available at the touch of a button. Then, from the end user’s point of view, a clear text-led display is an effective means of conveying more information about the boiler itself, without having to consult the instruction manual. For instance, if a system requires a top-up, this can be highlighted on the display panel, making it simple for the issue to either be addressed by the homeowner or explained to the installer.

Clear communication Of course, advances in technology mean many boilers are also supplied with separate control units straight out of the box. Utilising the manufacturer’s own controls allows clear communication between all parts of the system; this ensures accuracy, reliability and convenience, as each component will be using the same digital ‘language’.

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

The latest heating controls, such as Navien’s own Smart Plus, have been designed with functionality, efficiency and end user comfort in mind. Weather compensation features have been added enabling a heating system to check the weather forecast and then adjust itself accordingly. Using Wi-Fi technology, boilers can check the forecast on OpenWeatherMap so, in the event of the outside temperature increasing, the system responds by adjusting the flow temperature accordingly. This ensures a property maintains a comfortable temperature, while the heating system only uses energy when needed.

Remote access Modern controls are also compatible with smartphone technology. This enables remote access to a heating and hot water system, which is certainly beneficial for end users, as it allows them to program or turn on a heating system at the touch of a button. Plus, wherever a user is in the world, they are still able to receive any error messages and change the heating and hot water if required, or should they be on holiday, an engineer can be pre-booked for when they return; similarly, should a family member experience a boiler issue, friends or relatives with access to the ‘smart app’ can pass on the technical information to the manufacturer’s customer service department on their behalf. Having the option to share a log-in among a household or family enables others to also check on the performance of the boiler – which is not always possible through third party devices. Smartphone compatibility then really comes to the fore with features like geofencing, where the user’s location determines how the heating system operates. This function (which is available on Navien’s range of oil and gas boilers) sees the boiler turning on (or off) depending on an occupant’s proximity to their home. It can also be set up across multiple handsets and users, so everybody in a household can benefit from the perfect indoor temperature.

Zone goal Another efficiency-boosting advantage offered by the latest controls is zoning, which enables precise temperature management throughout different areas of a property – and can even enhance the overall energy rating of a heating system. This provides even greater flexibility for homeowners as, for example, the heating can be set lower in the kitchen than in a lounge, or even programmed to come on at different times across separate storeys. Zoning a central heating system allows for the temperature in each room to be easily and accurately set for optimum comfort; different people can even set the temperature in individual rooms (such as bedrooms) to suit their own preferences. Whatever controls are fitted to a heating system, it is imperative that installers explain to customers exactly how each one works. Doing so will ensure they understand the full range of operational features and benefits available, as well as

highlight the most effective and efficient settings to use. Leading manufacturers will include controls within their training modules, so engineers can ensure they are ideally positioned to explain the many advantages available by attending the relevant courses. Given the advances in heating technology, installers should be encouraging their customers to utilise state-of-the-art controls, especially those offering high levels of sustainability and cost effectiveness. Knowledge of modern devices will not only enable engineers to explain their advantages to customers, it will also provide opportunities to offer a complete heating system package, as opposed to boilers alone. Furthermore, end users will also benefit from greater levels of energy efficiency, as well as lower fuel bills – all of which makes for a powerful combination. Balancing act PHPI reports on the launch of a new valve from Danfoss, designed to make balancing a heating system faster and easier.

B

alancing domestic heating systems can sometimes be more of an art than a science. To help installers achieve this more easily and quicker Danfoss has recently introduced the RAS-B2 Danfoss Dynamic Valve. While some TRVs only act as flow limiters, this latest addition to the Danfoss TRV family features a differential pressure controller. It has been designed to ensure that pressure drops over the valve remain at a constant level, so flow through the valve is maintained at both full (winter) and partial (autumn/spring) loads. Additionally, pre-setting of the desired flow is done on

the valve, rather than on the lockshield which the company has estimated could save installers up to two hours of working time. Danfoss believes this innovation will help heating installers make sure a system is correctly balanced in a fraction of the time it would normally take.

On the App Alongside the promise of faster and more simple hydronic balancing, the new RAS-B2 is also featured on the Danfoss Installer App. Using this tool installers can calculate, record and document the correct flow and subsequent setting for each radiator on their smartphone or tablet. The company believes it is currently the only 100% pressure independent valve demonstrating a constant flow in all conditions, ensuring each radiator receives an equal flow of hot water. As well as optimising end-user comfort, this means that the return temperature is lower (condensing boiler efficiency is best at below a return temperature of 55˚C) and the pump can run at a lower speed.

Even heating Industry research suggests that between 80% and 90% of heating systems in Europe are unbalanced, which can result in the common complaints of noisy radiators and uneven heating. To address this, updates to

By launching the RAS-B2 Dynamic Valve now Danfoss is offering installers a simple and future-proof solution Part L in 2021 may include an increased requirement to prove that domestic heating systems are well balanced. Gareth Ash, Marketing Manager at Danfoss said: “By launching the RAS-B2 Dynamic Valve now Danfoss is offering installers a simple and future-proof solution that will satisfy their customers’ needs today and comply with forthcoming regulations to make existing UK homes more energy efficient as we move towards the ultimate goal of Net Zero in 2050.” The new RAS-B2 Danfoss Dynamic Valve is available in a range of radiator packs, including RAS-C2 liquid sensor, and with a choice of 10mm or 15mm fittings to suit different installation requirements. BUSINESS & TRAINING

HIT THE ROAD TO

Certified renewable heating installers will be needed to meet the demand for heat pumps and other renewable technologies. Griff Thomas from GTEC explains why heating installers are ideally placed to meet this demand and looks at what the government is doing to support them through the process.

T

he demand for low carbon heating solutions has risen significantly over the last 12 months despite the pandemic, added to by the The Green Homes Grant. The Green Homes Grant aims to do two things: improve over 600,000 homes with energy efficiency measures and low carbon heating, cutting carbon emissions and energy costs; and support over 100,000 jobs in the green construction sector for local heating installers, plumbers and other experienced tradespeople. Since the scheme launched in September 2020 there have been numerous concerns about high interest from homeowners and a lack of suitably certified tradespeople to carry out the work, combined with an unrealistic time frame. The government recently announced a welcome 12-month extension to the scheme, which will now run until March 2022, providing time for many more installers to be upskilled for the low-carbon heat sector through newly announced government subsidised training and support programmes.

Renewable renaissance The Green Homes Grant makes provision for low-carbon heating technologies such as air source heat pumps (ASHP), ground source heat pumps (GSHP) and solar thermal. These are considered ‘primary

measures’ under the scheme and homeowners can apply for a grant to cover two-thirds of the cost, capped at £5,000 (or £10,000 for low-income households). Currently, our homes account for 20% of carbon emissions and 35% of energy usage, and less than 2% are heated by low-carbon technologies. This needs to change dramatically within a very short time frame if we are to achieve our legally binding target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Heating installers are at the forefront of the transition away from natural gas and oil central heating. By embracing low-carbon technologies, heating installers can use their specialist skills,

knowledge and experience to help shape the future of the UK heating sector.

Government funded training The push to deliver on the Green Homes Grant has created some exciting opportunities for installers looking to upskill. The Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) recently awarded £6.9 million to UK based training providers to support tradespeople through the process of becoming a Green Homes Grant certified installer. GTEC, in partnership with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has been successful in its bid for funding* and has launched the Renewable

Heat Installer Training & Support Scheme (RHITSS) – a fully integrated package of support that aims to guide heating engineers, plumbers and experienced tradespeople through the training and certification process, from initial qualification to certification as a Green Homes Grant heat pump and/or solar thermal installer.

Overcoming barriers This is a fantastic opportunity for installers to get a grant that covers a good chunk of the cost of training – qualifications that typically cost in the region of £1,500 to £2,500. However, we recognise that the cost of training is just one of many barriers to becoming Green Homes Grant certified. Being TrustMark registered and certified by MCS is also part of the schemes criteria and funding and support is designed to cover that too. The RHITSS will break down the qualification and certification journey,

£6.9

Green Homes Grant and beyond…

MILLION

The Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) recently awarded £6.9 million to UK based training providers to support tradespeople through the process of becoming a Green Homes Grant certified installer. providing support at every stage to ensure it is manageable for installers. The final hurdle for many is securing their first installation to enable them to be certified. Utilising our working relationship with MCS, we will match-make willing consumers with installers looking for their first site, in addition to providing a framework of controlled sites across the UK.

If, like most heating installers, you’re already up to your eyes in work, you might be wondering why you would invest your time and money in upskilling for a scheme which only runs for a year? Well, while Green Homes Grant installs will come to an end in June 2022 (vouchers are valid for 3 months from date of issue), I would strongly encourage all heating installers to view low-carbon technologies as a long-term growth strategy. Renewable heat is very much on the agenda for the future and the skills you learn now (at a vastly reduced cost) will give you a head start in a growing sector. *GTEC and MCS have been awarded almost £1 million of the £6.9 million pot, which has been shared between 17 training providers across the UK.

ACADEMY STATUS

Following the launch of Ideal Heating’s Expert Academy online training service in September 2020, PHPI caught up with the business’s Head of Technical Training, Tony Rossetti, to find out how it’s going.

Q

How successful has the launch of Expert Academy been? And why launch an on-demand Learning & Development service now?

The feedback we’ve had has been tremendous. We’re 100% committed to helping installers provide the highest standards of service to their customers – across a wide range of heating technologies – and we’re incredibly proud of the role the Expert Academy is playing in bringing this to life. Online learning has shown significant growth over the last decade, as the internet and education combine to provide people with the opportunity to gain new skills. It’s vital that the plumbing and heating industry keeps pace with other sectors, so that installers can access information and training in a way that works for them, and that fits around everything else they’ve got going on in their daily lives. Our virtual classrooms are free to use and cover all the skills and

knowledge installers need to work with our domestic and commercial product ranges. They also allow users to access live training from anywhere in the country, and to interact with and receive feedback from our expert trainers. At the same time, we appreciate that structured training sessions might not suit everyone, and that being able to learn on the go – in your van, on your phone, after a job – might work best for some installers. Our on-demand service provides installers with a range of video content, tips and guides that can be accessed from anywhere, and is mobile friendly for handy troubleshooting on the job. We’ll also be continuing to grow the amount of resources of offer to include multiple interactive e-learning modules and assessments for installers to complete when it suits them. We’re always finding ways to enhance and develop the service we provide to installers. As well as helping them keep their knowledge and skills up to date, both Expert Academy services can be linked to our Installer Connect loyalty platform. This

030_PHPI_MAR21_Layout 1 01/02/2021 11:29 Page 31

gives us more insight into who’s installing our products, their skillsets and what interests them, and we can use this to tailor and adapt the way we work together now and in the future.

Q

What impact has the coronavirus pandemic had on the training options for installers and heating engineers? Did it impact the decision to launch Expert Academy?

Pre-pandemic, most training was carried out in a group setting, on an all-day course. A limited number of training centres and places were available, requiring installers to book months in advance and to take on the cost of travel, accommodation, and in many cases the course itself. These factors made it a real struggle for some installers to access learning, and the added challenges of Covid-19 meant a complete rethink was needed to ensure learning and development opportunities remained accessible to all. But even though Covid-19 has highlighted the need for installers to be able to access online learning, launching Expert Academy wasn’t something we did reactively. We’re passionate about strengthening our relationship with installers and providing a digital training

Our on-demand service provides installers with a range of video content, tips and guides that can be accessed from anywhere.

platform that suits them, and these plans had been in the works long before we’d even heard of coronavirus. We’ve put a lot of thought into the platform and invested in the very latest technology to ensure that all of our live, virtual courses and on-demand content are as engaging as possible. We’re extremely proud of the finished product and truly believe it’s the best installer learning and training platform out there in terms of both the breadth of the content and the formats it’s delivered in.

Q

What topics and types of training have you seen installers taking advantage of? What plans do you have to grow the range of training you currently offer? The highest demand we’ve seen has been in training for Ideal Heating’s Logic boilers, which is unsurprising given their popularity among both installers and homeowners. The Logic is a mainstay of the Ideal range and we expect interest to continue for some time. In terms of adapting the platform, we’re constantly looking to improve in response to feedback from users. In recent months we’ve made small tweaks like the

addition of evening sessions to give installers even more flexibility around when they access live training, and adding more kit to our studios that has improved the way we film and edit content. We’re also working to grow the number of courses we offer and plan to make training available across our full range of products, including those from our sister brands – Keston by Ideal Heating, Hamworthy Heating and ACV – by the end of 2021. In addition, we’ll be offering a ‘Basics in Electrics for Gas Engineers’ course, covering topics including general safety and fault-finding.

Q

In what areas do you think installers will be looking to expand their skills in 2021? Sustainability is going to be a key area for 2021. The UK’s direction of travel on emissions is clear, and it’s evident the government’s ambitions for the heating sector are geared towards low carbon solutions. As a business, we’re fully committed to a more sustainable future and our recently-formed Environmental Division already oversees a programme of investment into research, product development and stakeholder engagement, to support the decarbonisation of domestic and commercial heating. It’s our responsibility to help upskill our loyal installers in this area, and we remain committed to future-proofing their businesses as we adapt and diversify our own. The Expert Academy will have a huge part to play in delivering against that commitment, and in ensuring that our installer base is ready to meet and embrace the changes that are coming. BUSINESS & TRAINING

TRAINING TRANSITION T

Viva Training Academy’s MD, Richard Firth asks: Is it worth training as a gas installer?

he UK Government’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and the race to find renewable energy sources have brought the future of natural gas into focus. Not only is it harmful to the planet, stocks are depleting so the time has come to face up to a gas-free future. This is a challenge, because the vast majority of homes in the UK have relied on gas for central heating for many years. What we need to look for is a smooth transition.

Low carbon alternatives to gas It’s most likely that a range of low carbon options will replace gas. Hydrogen offers real promise and there have been some successful pilot schemes running across the UK in recent years. At Keele University and now in Leeds and Scotland, mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas have been piped to homes using the existing gas network. When hydrogen burns, it produces just water, so there are no CO2 emissions and as the technology develops, it’s anticipated that we’ll be able to run boilers on hydrogen alone.

And what of heat pumps? There’s been growing interest in heat pumps over recent years. They, run on electricity, which means they are not entirely carbon-free. However, compared to traditional gas boilers, they’re far less harmful. Likely to be one of the most popular technologies under the Green Homes Grant, heat pumps will continue to grow in popularity over the coming months.

So what’s the future for gas engineers in the UK? Well, despite fears to the contrary, it seems as though it’s good. From 2025, the installation of gas boilers in new-builds will be outlawed and there are financial incentives to retrofit lower carbon alternatives in older homes with schemes (such as the aforementioned Green Homes Grant) but this doesn’t take away from the fact there’s a huge existing stock of gas central heating systems in the UK, fired by over 22 million boilers. These will require maintenance and servicing by an army of qualified and well-informed gas engineers for years to come. In fact, research has shown that we’re running low on the numbers of gas engineers we need. Most of those currently working in the trade are in their fifties – heading for retirement within the next decade. Gas Safe and HHIC have both voiced their concerns that we’re on the brink of a serious skills-gap, as the numbers training to work with gas is dropping below that of those reaching the end of their career.

Training in gas Would I recommend training in gas these days? I certainly would. There’s current high demand for gas engineers and, having equipped themselves with knowledge and experience in the heating sector, they’re in

32 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

a strong position to help bring about the heating revolution in the future. With a little re-training, they’ll be called upon to make the boiler adjustments when hydrogen comes properly on-stream and the ASHP industry is looking to existing gas and heating engineers to install heat pumps as they have the appropriate transferable skills. For plumbers, training on a Managed Learning Programme, which combines classroom theory with hands-on experience is a smart route to take. There is also a longer version of this programme for candidates who don’t already have a trades background. Importantly, the MLP includes a portfolio element, where learners are assigned a professional engineer/mentor, to gain real experience in the field. This is essential for those seeking to gain their ACS qualification and registration with Gas Safe Register – a prerequisite to working in the sector. Whether you’re interested in maintaining the UK’s millions of gas boilers or keen to get in involved in a greener energy future, training today as a gas engineer will set you up for an interesting and varied lifetime of work. Viva Training Academy runs the LCL Awards’ MLP from its purpose-built centre in Halifax. For more information www.rdr.link/px025

BUSINESS & TRAINING

GOING VIRTUAL

F

ew would argue that Covid-19 has changed the way we live and work and at Vokèra we know that many businesses out there are under extreme pressure simply to survive. Even in the best of times, let alone in the current crisis, we appreciate that adapting to new products and technologies, as well as changing legislation, can be a challenge for busy Gas Safe Registered/RGII engineers. To guide installers through these challenges key manufacturers like Vokèra have developed comprehensive training courses that cover topics such as advanced new heating technologies, the

latest electronic controls, and renewable energy solutions. However, in this strange new world of lockdowns, travel restrictions and social distancing it has become increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to conduct traditional in-person training at a physical location. It’s not surprising, therefore, that during 2020 we have seen an exponential growth in online courses, workshops and webinars – and since it seems as though Covid-19 will be part of our lives for some time, the trend towards virtual training looks set to continue throughout 2021 and possibly beyond.

34 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

With the pandemic putting most in-person training for installers on hold, being able to access online training to keep up to date with the latest products and practices has never been more important. Neil Mattock, Marketing Director and Head of Training at Vokèra by Riello looks at how interactive webinars can help. Keep learning Although Covid-19 has prevented most face-to-face training during the past year, we don’t see that as a reason for installers to call a halt on honing their skills. In fact, in today’s tough economic climate it is more important than ever for heating and plumbing companies, whether large or small, to learn new ways to work even smarter and more competitively in order to retain their existing customers and win new ones. As well as improving their product knowledge, installers often seek training on regulatory changes and the impact new standards might have on the way they work and how

034_PHPI_MAR21_Layout 1 01/02/2021 11:17 Page 35

they can ensure compliance. Being able to tap into high quality online training from the safety of their own homes or offices means installers can continue to get invaluable advice and tips on completing hassle free repairs and compliant installations.

Going online Of course, online training is not a ‘new thing’ in business or personal development. Although e-learning tools have been around for many years the restrictions imposed on all our lives by Covid-19 have brought the benefits of this technology to the fore. Online seminars, or webinars, can turn a basic presentation into an engaging online event and an opportunity for participants to raise questions on subjects that are relevant to them. During the current crisis this type of virtual event also has the advantage of being location flexible and allows people from all around the country, or even the world, to attend and interact in real-time. To ensure installers can continue to develop their skills and business potential during this pandemic Vokèra has created a complete suite of webinars using the popular Zoom video conferencing platform. Our webinar programme covers a wide range of topics and is purpose-designed to deliver real value and business benefits by helping installers save time and money on site. Indeed, we have always believed that our training, whether in-person or online, should be structured to ensure it covers everything Vokèra installers need to enable a quick and easy install or repair, from wiring and flueing to benchmark and fault finding.

4 &7PM

To help installers find the time to attend online training Vokèra has scheduled its Zoom webinars to start at 4pm and 7pm.

Being able to tap into high quality online training from the safety of their own homes or offices means installers can continue to get invaluable advice and tips on completing hassle free repairs and compliant installations. Interactive experience Hosted by our experienced training team, our webinars include in-depth instruction on Boiler Installation and Commissioning and Fault Finding, as well as informative overviews of our Commercial Heating Solutions and the latest Controls. The programme also features a Technical Q&A webinar and specific sessions on new products, such as the Vision Plus combi and system boilers, which give installers an opportunity to become familiar with new additions to our range. Most of the events are presented from Vokèra’s London Colney training centre, which is fully equipped with a broad range of heating products and teaching aids. The multi-camera setup allows for real, close up interaction with the products and components. To provide an interactive experience, participants can use the Q&A function within the Zoom interface to ask our team questions, which are then answered during the scheduled breaks. In planning our online programme we also took account of the fact that time is money and taking time out of their working day for training may not be an economically viable option for some installers. With this in mind, we have scheduled our Zoom webinars to start at

4pm and 7pm, which we believe installers will find more convenient. If installers want to take part they can simply go to Vokèra’s website (www.vokera.co.uk/webinars/) and register for the session they want to join and then log on at the appointed time.

Convenience and flexibility 2020 was the year we all had to change the way we live and work in order to accommodate what continues to be an unprecedented public health crisis. Covid-19 restrictions have driven more and more business activities online – and that includes training. Whilst face-to-face training clearly has an important role to play in our industry’s education, until this is safe to resume we must embrace the virtual training environment. However, even after the pandemic ends we believe some installers may decide they actually prefer the convenience and flexibility offered by online training such as webinars. Location flexible for hosts and participants and able to reach a broad audience, we predict that webinars could well remain one of the top trends in e-learning whatever the future holds. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

ATOOL FOR ALL

Plumb Chum is a new keyring multi-tool designed by plumber Paul James. PHPI caught up with Paul and his partner, design engineer Andrew Marshall, to discover its functions and find out how they managed to launch their new tool during a pandemic.

W

hen you need a tool for a job, but cannot find anything on the market, many people would simply ‘make do’ with a less than perfect solution that just about performed the task: but not south-coast plumber Paul James. Instead he started on a four year mission to bring to market a plumbing multi-tool designed to help perform a number of tasks that plumbers face every day. The genesis of the idea for what would become known as ‘Plumb Chum’ dates back to 2015 when Paul was fiddling about with a generic Gas Cabinet key,

realising that a hex bit would fit into it, that could then be used to get the cover off a boiler. Paul began to wonder just how many of those everyday tasks a plumber faces could be achieved with a single handy tool. Paul explained: “I started to think how handy it would be to have a simple tool on my keyring that could help me determine the requirements of a job, prior to collecting the correct set of tools for the task from my van.” After further developing the idea Paul teamed up with design engineer Andrew Marshall to get a prototype made. Andrew

38 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

developed a CAD model and the pair used a 3D printing firm in New York to create the first version which they christened ‘The Pig’.

Real life testing Over time the design was gradually improved, with Paul testing each updated version in real life situations. The final prototype was manufactured in the UK around March 2019. Andrew told us: “We worked on design alongside the function. We looked at how it could be manufactured, what processes would be used and optimised it from there.” By then it had become clear to Paul and Andrew that their invention may also be of interest to other plumbers. They settled on the name Plumb Chum, set a date to launch the tool to the sector – April 2020 – and invested in their first production stock. Then Covid-19 struck. “It wasn’t ideal timing” Paul recalled wryly, “but as we didn’t really know how to launch a new product the additional time was ultimately helpful.”

Pictured here: In developing Plumb Chum Paul and Andrew created a number of prototypes

Pandemic launch Following a six month delay the Plumb Chum was officially launched in October 2020. Paul explained that one of the first people to purchase the tool had stopped him in a plumbing merchant to ask about it after noticing the Plumb Chum hanging on his keyring. The eagle-eyed shopper bought one and posted about it on an online forum which, Andrew recalled, “really got the ball rolling for us… so we didn’t need a proper launch after all.” With more stock now ordered Paul and Andrew have set up a company, Tactile Tools, to promote sales although, Andrew

noted, ideally they’d like Plumb Chum to be available in merchants. Paul reflected: “It is by far the most comfortable tool to turn off an isolation valve. I use it more than all my other tools put together. My dream is that there are now other plumbers out there that are using this more than any other tool. It turns so many things. Every heating engineer has that yellow key on their keyring. We want them to change that to a Plumb Chum, which does so much more.” To find out more about Plumb Chum www.rdr.link/px033

Plumb Chum

The Plumb Chum multi-tool is about the size of a carabiner and has been designed to be part of a plumber’s keyring. It has numerous functions, all on one compact tool. There’s a flat head screwdriver, a gas cabinet key, a valve grip slot, a 10mm spanner, a radiator bleed key, a wire stripper, a pry bar, a pipe de-burring tool… the list goes on. In fact, its inventors say at least 15 functions can be performed with the tool.

PROTECT AND SERVE

With face coverings on the mind of the whole country, Hellberg says trade professionals should consider eye and face protection.

F

ace Protection products such as safety glasses, masks and visors have all been brought into much sharper focus during the Covid-19 pandemic. They’re all critical components in the PPE framework that ensures wellbeing and safety at work. In business and industrial environments the use of Face Protection products should be second nature. Impact injuries can be caused by flying objects such as stone or brick fragments, particles of dirt and dust, tiny pieces of metal and splinters caused by hammering, chipping, grinding, machining, wood working, sawing, and drilling. Chemicals and extreme heat sources are also dangerous to the face. Splashes, fumes, vapours and irritating mists can scald and burn while welding arcs, UV radiation and intense light can damage your eyes. The consequences of facial injuries are serious. Not just time off work and loss of pay as a result of short or long-term injuries, there’s the potential for something more significant. An injury can cause a lifetime of permanent disfigurement, even loss of sight.

Eye protection So, what to look for in the best Safety Eyewear? Comfort, protection and fit are really important as are lightweight, durable materials to provide complete protection and flexibility of design for combination with other PPE including ear defenders, safety helmets, and visors. Also, look out for and specially developed lens technology for

impact-resistance plus anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings on both sides as well as styles that can be worn over prescription glasses. Around the lens, ergonomic designs should incorporate practical features, like a soft nose bridge and ‘adjustable temples’, designed to ensure the glasses stay in place and fit safely.

Face protection visors BS EN 166:2002 is the International Standard for eye and face protection covering personal protective eye wear in the form of Visors and Eye Shields and it’s important to look for this standard when you’re choosing what products to use. Think carefully about hazards in the work environment and look for a product that is designed for a comfortable, tight and ergonomic fit for maximum protection, especially so that no objects get around the edges of the visor. The visor should cover your face from at least the forehead to the base of the chin. The best quality visors are available in different materials, thickness and size which correspond to specific hazard protection. You can even get visors that are treated with an anti-fog coating. Polycarbonate provides impact and heat resistance. It is also used for arc flash, high heat, chemical splash and radiation protection while Acetate also provides excellent resistance to chemical splash. For protection against radiation (IR and UV), look for visors that are made from special tinted and/or coated polycarbonate.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

SOUND THE

ALARM

Tool theft can be many trades worst nightmare. PHPI quizzes plumber Mike Horsfall about the alarm system he has devised to help protect tools and materials from opportunistic thieves.

Q

First off, please can you tell us a little more about yourself – how long have you been in the trade and what kind of work do you do? My name is Michael Horsfall, I’m 55 years old and I have been a self-employed plumbing and heating engineer for nearly 30 years. I work mostly in and around Leeds and the West Yorkshire area helping my clients with all their plumbing and heating needs. I spent my early years specializing in bathroom conversions but I have spent much of the last 10 years now installing gas boilers and heating systems, boiler servicing, landlord gas safety inspection certificates and boiler repairs.

Q

Why is the topic of van security an issue that is close to your heart? Van security and tool theft in our industry is a real and constant problem. If you are in the trade you will, I’m sure, have been, or will be, a victim of van crime at some point yourself, or at least you will know someone personally who has, or will be. And it is devastating, particularly for a self-employed sole trader like me who spent years building a variety of expensive quality power tools & hand tools that you can tell with your eyes shut, they are yours. Trade guys will know exactly what I mean.

So, having had my tools stolen I know first-hand what it is like discovering next morning your van door open, the contents gone and what it will cost to get back on your feet. Thieves will chance their arm if they spot an opportunity for easy pickings. For example, I regularly had copper tube stolen from my unalarmed pipe carrier, sometimes from right outside my home.

Q

Where did the original idea for the Van Guardian come from?

In 2017 I decided to look at van crime from a totally different prospective: from the roof rack/pipe carrier down. I started to develop a solution, with the initial concept of alarming my un-alarmed pipe carrier to stop copper pipe theft. It was obvious these unalarmed treasure troves were soft targets, drawing the wrong kind of attention to my van in the first place, so it seemed a good place to start.

42 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

042_PHPI_MAR21_Layout 1 02/02/2021 11:56 Page 43

After nearly two years in the development process I finally had a prototype design that I could patent and trademark – what we know today as Van Guardian.

Q

How does it deter would-be thieves?

Van Guardian activates on contact, providing an 110dB audible alert to thwart the actions of thieves, prevent criminal damage and ultimately protect your tools and assets from potential theft. It can be used to protect any number of vulnerable commonly targeted at risk zones on and around a vehicle. From the pipe carrier, to prevent copper pipe theft, or roof rack to protect ladders and assets, to the back door and side door of the cargo areas of a van or truck.

Q

How does it work?

It uses, at its core, highly responsive tri axial accelerometers to detect minimal contact, and with highly efficient microchip

having had my tools stolen I know first-hand what it is like discovering next morning your van door open, the contents gone and what it will cost to get back on your feet. technology we are able to program it to ignore the rocking from strong wind. Each unit has seven levels of ‘fine tune’ sensitivity for the end user to adjust, to tackle individual levels of exposure and the worst of heavy rain conditions to eliminate false alarms. It is important to note at this stage, that when I did my research into van crime it was obvious there were small pockets of organized gangs of career criminals who would stop at nothing to attack a van, to rip its doors to get to its contents. What needs to be clear is, no alarm or lock upgrade will deter this level of determined attack.

Q

Can van owners fit it themselves?

Van Guardian was designed with the end user in mind. The simple installation procedure means your vehicle needn’t be off the road or out of action. There is no additional installation cost, no awkward drilling of your van and no complicated wiring loom to install.

Q

What stops thieves from just ripping it off?

Van Guardian is attached with 3M high bond contact adhesives creating a powerful, lasting bond across the whole of the base area. So long as the installation cleaning procedure is followed correctly it will form a strong lasting waterproof and secure bond. The unit, once armed, also protects itself and will trigger a two second alarm warning upon sensing any unsolicited attempted removal and will activate a 30 second alarm if the action continues. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

It’s not just plastic bottles and food packaging that contribute to the single-use plastic problem in the UK; the waste generated by the construction industry plays a part too. Andy Cummins, Senior Product Manager at Geocel, takes a look at the environmental issues with plastic sealant cartridges – and the small steps to take, to help make a positive impact.

MAKE THE susta ina ble SWITCH O ver the last decade, the devastating human impact from excessive levels of plastic waste has become one of the most pressing environmental issues. Generated from day-to-day activities, these products often cannot be recycled and end up in landfills that are rapidly filling up. The construction industry is a significant contributor to this. In fact, the sector consumes 23% of all plastic produced in the UK, with an estimated 50,000 tonnes of plastic packaging waste every year. It is a crucial issue facing us – and in a recent survey by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, 95% of respondents stated that the construction industry must reduce its plastics and packaging consumption. If we were to look just at plastic sealant and adhesive cartridges, shockingly, more than 100 million of them are sent to landfill each year, after being thrown away by tradespeople on a daily basis. In theory, the plastic used to make sealant cartridges could be recycled; but due to the residue product that is left inside ‘empty’ cartridges, which cannot be easily removed, they must go to landfill. As the industry begins to recognise its impact, there is not only moral pressure to reduce plastic waste, but also financial

pressure too. For larger operations, the cost of sending plastic waste to landfill will undoubtedly continue to rise, with only an estimated 6.8 years of non-hazardous landfill capacity left in England, as of 2017. It is also expected that landfill tax will continue to increase, which has already more than trebled since 2008. Furthermore, as from April 2022 the government is due to introduce a further tax on companies who produce or import plastic packaging with insufficient recycled content, which will in turn cause product prices to rise.

Environmentally-friendly alternative As a result, manufacturers are increasingly considering ways in which the number of plastic cartridges that go to waste can be reduced. Geocel, for example, has

44 MARCH 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

launched the new ecoSEAL system, with trade favourite sealants such as Dowsil 785+ and THE WORKS PRO now available in foils. Working in conjunction with a reusable sleeve, users can switch from traditional plastic cartridges to a more environmentally-friendly alternative. The premise of the ecoSEAL system is simple. The foil can be inserted into a re-usable plastic sleeve that then fits into any standard gun. The sleeve can be re-used up to 75 times and is also recyclable at the end of its usable life. When empty, the foils are eight times smaller than traditional cartridges, meaning less waste is sent to landfill. However, the greatest benefit to plumbers is that they can easily make the switch to a more sustainable solution without compromising on the quality of the product they use. Many of us are already looking at simple ways to reduce plastic waste – from using ‘bags for life’ to being more conscientious recyclers. With simple innovations such as the ecoSEAL system, plumbers can also make small changes to their working lives, which can make a positive difference to construction’s impact on the environment.

SOIL AND WASTE PIPE CONSIDERATIONS With large bathroom renovations and new en suite refurbishment projects gaining in popularity, Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), provides an overview of the waste and soil pipe design and installation challenges that these projects can often present.

A

ccording to a statistical release from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, there were 4,340 subdivisions of large houses into flats from 2019 to 2020. In addition, many homeowners are spending money modifying or extending their own homes due to being indoors more and wanting to make improvements. As these refurbishments and building change of use trends are expected to continue, it is important that potential plumbing pitfalls are avoided, as repurposing a home is often where problems can occur the most.

Common issues and solutions Common plumbing problems in domestic properties often happen when alterations to an existing system are made incorrectly. Soil/waste pipes in particular need to be correctly designed, sized and installed. Incorrect waste/soil pipe sizing may happen for aesthetic reasons, and when this happens it is often the case that the soil vent pipes or waste pipes are reduced in size with less capacity. Pipes need to have sufficient capacity for the intended use and depend on accurate pipe size, pipe length and gradient. By making a soil vent pipe or waste pipe smaller, the discharge of waste is significantly affected because a vacuum can be created. The siphonage may prevent water from draining and subsequently cause a blockage. In flats, for example, there have been incidences where ground floor

inhabitants have been subject to the impact of back pressure. These factors lead to unwanted flow of water in the reverse direction. The implications of backflow are severe odour, flooding, and the health risks to occupants posed due to contamination. Not increasing the diameter of the pipe to accommodate for new length of pipework is another common issue to be avoided. When it comes to waste pipe diameter, Part H Building Regulations state, to have a 42mm diameter pipe with a maximum length of three metres. If a pipe is longer than three metres, a 50mm pipe is necessary. An Inadequate length to pipe diameter ratio will mean that there is insufficient air in the system, which can increase pressure and result in back pressure, or induced siphonage for example. In some instances, mistakes can also be made by extending the length of existing pipe runs without increasing the gradient. Waste pipes must be installed on a gradient in order to ensure the water runs the right way. However, if pipes are on too steep a slope, this may cause the water to drain at a faster rate than any solid sediment meaning it does not wash away and may cause drain blockage or siphonage. Alternatively, if the gradient is too shallow, there will be insufficient fall which may also cause blockage problems in baths and showers. The minimum fall for every four metres of pipe is 10mm, a self-cleansing velocity.

Another common installation issue is when the wash basin fitted in an en suite bathroom is incorrectly connected to the rainwater system. Ultimately, wastewater from bathrooms must not drain into rainwater pipes because it is still untreated waste water and sewage. It isn’t just the wrong pipe termination that can be a problem, but also the type of flowrate going through pipework. Advances in shower manufacturing have seen a significant increase in ‘digital power showers’ which have considerable flow rates of up to 12 litres per minute. Increased volume of water due to high flow waters means a plumbing system is required to cope with this increased discharge. For example, if the connected waste pipe is too small, this can leave the user standing in water as it cannot drain quickly enough or the pulling of another trap seal. Overall, installers should always be aware of the relationship between pipe diameter, pipe length and gradient as this is crucial to prevent issues with drainage and performance. If in doubt, Approved Document H offers detailed information on drainage and this should be referenced. The CIPHE can also offer members technical help, support, information, CPDs and more.
