Train ride A friend in the military once told me his mantra is ‘train hard, fight easy’. Training is at the core of the armed forces – some in the services spend their whole lives training for roles they may never actually undertake. The same cannot be said for the busy professional plumber, who is operating on the home front six or even seven days a week. For some, the last training session may be the day they left college – although it is certainly the case that there is also much to be learned by simply doing the job on a day-to-day basis. However, it remains important to keep skills to the highest standards possible. Much could have changed since a plumber was last at college. New techniques are constantly evolving that make installations easier and improve the result for the customer. Plus, new technologies you may never have previously considered are being launched all of the time. We recently visited a heat pump supplier who told us that many of the heating engineers signing up to their courses had never previously worked on a system featuring renewables. However, training can be costly, and is always time-consuming: taking time off from the day-job means a day not earning. There is some help at hand however. There are growing levels of support online, many of the professional institutes offer assistance, as do product manufacturers, with some courses free to attend. The supplier we recently visited has a training centre in the south west, has plans for another in Scotland and wants to establish around a dozen more centres across the UK in the near future. In this issue we have a feature on ‘Business & Training’ that highlights some of the opportunities available. The heating and plumbing sector has never stood still. Changes to regulations, standards and installation best practice are continuous. New technologies are constantly emerging and becoming established. Plus, there is every sign that this will continue at pace throughout the coming years. Regular training top-ups are one of the best methods of staying ahead of the game, enabling installers to ensure they are in the best possible position to offer customers a trusted, professional service.

CARBON MONOXIDE AWARENESS LACKING KESTON BOILERS UNVEILS NEW LOOK The link with parent company Ideal Boilers has been emphasised in the new corporate branding for Keston Boilers. The rebrand will initially be rolled out through social media and the Keston website and be used more widely from March 2020, which the company says will coincide with a new product launch. Keston’s range of Combi, System and Heat boilers and their accompanying filters will remain unchanged. Keston can trace its history back to 1928, when its original parent company was established as a domestic and commercial heating installation and servicing operation. An early pioneer of condensing boilers, Keston was purchased by Ideal Boilers in 2006. Boiler production was moved to Ideal’s Hull manufacturing site in 2013 and all Keston boilers since have been designed, developed and manufactured in the UK. Jo Shepherd, Chief Marketing Officer, said: “Our research showed us that many installers are unaware that Keston is part of Ideal and that it combines all the benefits they regularly get from installing Ideal boilers with the flexibility of Twin Flue Technology. Keston’s new look starts the journey of growing that awareness, helped by including the ‘smile’ from the Ideal Boilers logo to further cement the link between the two brands.”

Over 80% of UK adults are at risk of missing ‘hangover like’ carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms, according to a new survey by Gas Safe Register. New research reveals over 80% of UK adults could be at risk of mistaking carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms for a different illness such as a cold, flu or hangover. The findings are The ‘Better Gas Safe Than Sorry’ launch event took place in Birmingham where an emergency butty released as part of new national van shared breakfasts along with potentially campaign from the Gas Safe life-saving information Register – Better Gas Safe Than Sorry – to help improve public awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning. The research, which involved 3,000 UK adults, suggests that most people don’t realise that the effects of CO exposure may not be severe. Only 20% of those surveyed said they always stop using a faulty gas appliance until it is fixed, and just 42% get their gas appliances serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Paul Hull, a Gas Safe registered engineer who is supporting the campaign, said: “Carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely serious, but preventable. To avoid being exposed to carbon monoxide in the first place, it is vital people get their gas appliances checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.” For more information on carbon monoxide poisoning and the symptoms www.rdr.link/pn001

HEAT LOSS COSTS OVER £350 A YEAR New research from FLIR Systems has found that the average UK home wastes £363 worth of heat through poor insulation. The survey also A FLIR thermal image of a poorly insulated detached property reveals that older homes from the Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian era are wasting the most on energy bills. The average energy bill for these types of properties in the winter is 43% higher than that for flats and houses built after the 1960s. Poorly insulated walls are the biggest culprits of energy loss, where 36% of heat is wasted. The new research from YouGov also found only 5% of UK homeowners have had a home energy assessment and only 7% have bought an energy monitor. Less than a third have insulated the walls or loft space and just over a quarter have blocked drafts. Rickard Lindvall, General Manager for Instruments at FLIR Systems said: “In order to detect heat loss that is invisible to the naked eye, thermal imaging is a key quality control measure when building, inspecting, renovating, or auditing a home.”

WORCESTER BOSCH REVEALS NEW HYDROGEN BOILER A ‘hydrogen ready’ boiler has been unveiled by Worcester Bosch. The unit, which fits into the same footprint as a current natural gas boiler, can run on 100% hydrogen gas, although it has been designed to also run effectively on natural gas. Worcester Bosch believes that replacing natural gas boilers with hydrogen gas may be the simplest solution to decarbonise heating in the UK. Last year, the UK committed to a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Yet, with 15% of UK greenhouse gases coming from heat in our homes, it is likely that the UK will not meet its climate change targets without a change in home heating technology and fuel. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch said; “The beauty of hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas is that as well as water as a by-product, Worcester Bosch has developed a technical solution that will feel familiar to both homeowners and installers. The gas network is also in place, so homeowners won’t experience any major infrastructure disruption.”

NEWS IN BRIEF... To help consumers understand the benefits of installing Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs), THE HEATING AND HOTWATER INDUSTRY COUNCIL (HHIC) have created a ‘Consumer Guide to Thermostatic Radiator Valves’. Martin Wilson, UK Sales Director, Resideo, and HHIC member said: “The HHIC guide will help to raise awareness amongst consumers of the benefits delivered by TRVs, which will result in householders having a lower lifetime cost for their heating system as well as greater comfort.” To download www.rdr.link/pn004 the guide British ventilation manufacturer VENT-AXIA has welcomed the publication of guidance on ‘Indoor Air Quality at Home’ from the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The document provides detailed information and advice on how to reduce exposure to indoor pollutants and so help protect health. The publication highlights the significant part effective ventilation plays in helping combat indoor air pollution in the home. HM Revenue and Customs ( HMRC ) has published some of the more imaginative excuses given over the past decade for not filing Self-Assessment returns and expense claims. Amongst the top ten most bizarre excuses and questionable expenses claims for items were: “I was up a mountain in Wales, and couldn’t find a post box or get an internet signal,” “My hamster ate my post” and “I’ve been cruising round the world in my yacht, and only picking up post when I’m on dry land.”

KOHLER MIRA has donated £58,330 to the UK’s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK. Over the course of 2019, the company’s charitable events ranged from collecting £1 coins in Smartie tubes, to team beard-dying challenges, bake sales, tombola’s, car washing and fancy-dress days. Craig Baker, Managing Director at Kohler Mira, commented: “It brings us great joy to contribute to Alzheimer’s Research UK’s crucial research, a charity close to many hearts here at Kohler Mira.” The number of gas boilers sold in the UK last year saw the market grow compared to 2018. In total, 1.67 million units were sold in 2019, an increase of 1.8% on 2018 figures. The number of homes with central heating is also increasing, with around 22 million homes in the UK now having gas central heating, compared to around 17 million homes, 20 years ago. However, an estimated 4 million ‘Zombie boilers’ are still in the market, according to THE HEATING AND HOTWATER INDUSTRY COUNCIL (HHIC).

PROFILE

A

modern CLASSIC

Making your company stand out from the competition can be a tricky proposition. Tom Hilditch, of Tom Plumb, seems to have cracked the code, combining a classic look with a modern approach. PHPI sat down with Tom to discover more. Name: Tom Hilditch

H

aving been in the industry for 22 years, Plumbing and Heating Engineer, Tom Hilditch, began his career as an apprentice at 18, before starting his own heating and plumbing company. After taking time off for travelling and soul searching, Tom returned to the UK, and set to work on his unique Richmond based plumbing business – Tom Plumb.

COMPANY: Tom Plumb Tom has always loved older cars which is why he decided against the typical work van and opted for a bright red, classic Morris Minor. As his hobby had been buying and fixing classic cars, it made sense to incorporate this into his working life. It also seemed appropriate to wear vintage style overalls and hats, with Tom and his staff embracing the classic look.

It would be natural to assume that a classic van, whilst quirky and noticeable, would cause more problems than it would potentially be worth. According to Tom, this simply hasn’t been the case. With two classic vans to maintain, they have cost the company the same, if not less in maintenance and service fees as the newer vans also used by the company. Tom suggests that finding a reliable garage that is good with older vehicles, and giving a little more TLC, is enough to keep his classic cars on top form.

Marketing tool

According to Tom: “If you find a fault, it’s not often the first issue you think of. You have to have a wider view.”

Although it was not his initial intention, the vintage style provided a great marketing opportunity for Tom, as his business became quickly recognisable. What’s more, neither Tom nor the company has any social media presence to speak of, using

Giving proper advice, and taking the time to listen to each individual customer’s needs is a priority for Tom. word of mouth and brand recognition as the only, and an effective, marketing tool. As well as a quirky and vintage aesthetic, it is clear that Tom’s no nonsense, and honest approach to his customers is what keeps them coming back, and recommending him to friends. Giving proper advice, and taking the time to listen to each individual customer’s needs is a priority for Tom, alongside providing quality work in which his clients can have

confidence. An open mind to do what is required by the customer, and a willingness to work within a budget to provide the best possible service, has become the cornerstone of the Tom Plumb business.

Business growth When asked his advice for apprentices or those looking to grow their business, Tom stressed the importance of being interested and open-minded. “If you find a fault, it’s not

often the first issue you think of. You have to have a wider view,” said Tom. “People are often too quick to jump, but you need to take the time to look, and understand the real reason that you are there.” Tom recognises that being interested in how things work is key to understanding and eventually resolving a problem – which, of course, is ultimately what plumbers have done throughout the ages, irrespective of the vehicles in which they have arrived to a site.

SPECIAL REPORT | The future for gas

CHANGING TIMES?

With plenty of stories in the news on the need to cut carbon emissions, David Holmes, Founder of Boiler Guide, examines what the future might hold for the heating sector.

D

espite the major technology changes in recent years, environmental concerns and the efficiency of new builds to retain heat, homes predominantly still rely on a boiler for hot water and central heating. These boilers are fuelled by natural gas, or oil in some cases, both of which are fossil fuels. In addition, the homes with electric heating systems are likely to be using electricity which has been generated through the burning of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels burn they emit carbon, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases (and other pollutants) cannot escape the atmosphere. They hang around absorbing and trapping heat which is causing the temperature of the earth’s surface, oceans and atmosphere to rise. This is called the greenhouse effect, or global warming, and has led to the climate change crisis we face today. It is the reason why many countries, including the UK, are working towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and, as the heating industry is responsible for around a third of all UK carbon emissions, why we have to change the way we heat our homes.

What’s the plan? Unfortunately, this is still to be confirmed. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is the independent advisory body which is guiding the government towards alternative heating systems which use renewable sources of energy and will not emit carbon into the atmosphere. The government has already acted on their advice by making it illegal to install gas

there will not be a blanket solution because the UK’s housing stock varies so drastically.

A Ground Source Heat Pump

boilers in new build homes from 2025, but further than that we have no plan in place. If we do not make changes in the next decade, we are likely to run out of time to halt the consequences of climate change. This is why the CCC, environmental experts and the heating industry are urging the government to commit to a plan in the Carbon Budget of September 2020. This will outline how we will decarbonise our society, the predicted costs and the requirements of industry.

Heating our homes in the future There are several renewable heating systems available, each with its own merits and drawbacks, but there will not be a blanket solution because the UK’s housing stock varies so drastically.

The most likely alternative for new builds appears to be low carbon, electric heating such as air source and ground source heat pumps which extract latent heat from either the air or ground outside the home. Heat pumps require a high level of insulation in order to work efficiently and effectively, which is why they are more suited to newly built homes. The biggest challenge we face is how to heat the 80% of UK homes currently relying on the gas grid. Asking homeowners and the industry to remove millions of gas boilers and replace them with an unfamiliar technology will be hugely costly and disruptive. Instead, the heating industry has been researching and trialling the possibility of replacing not the boiler, but the fuel it uses.

SPECIAL REPORT | The future for gas

Specifically, we would keep the existing infrastructure of our gas network in place, but gradually change the fuel from natural gas to hydrogen gas. Unlike natural gas, hydrogen does not release carbon when burned. The snag is that producing hydrogen is costly and emits carbon, so a carbon capture and storage system will also have to be developed.

Trials are underway Hydrogen trials are already in progress such as in the village of Keele where the HyDeploy trial sees gas that is made up of 20% hydrogen and 80% natural gas being supplied to properties. Boiler manufacturers are also revealing prototypes of ‘hydrogen ready’ boilers which could be installed in homes from 2025. They would run on natural gas or a blend of the two gases until supplies of hydrogen are sufficient to enable a change to 100% hydrogen.

Homes not connected to the gas grid are likely to move to an electric heating system powered by electricity generated via wind turbines or solar PV panels. Alternatively, off-grid homes may be able to use a combination of renewable heating technologies, such as a biomass boiler or heat pump for heating, with solar thermal panels for domestic hot water production. In all cases higher levels of insulation will be required alongside smarter heating controls and more accountability (from individuals and organisations) to improve our energy efficiency levels. While we are unlikely to see significant practical changes in the way we heat homes over the next decade, the next few years need to represent a watershed in both our living habits and government policy. SPECIAL REPORT | Fixing pipework

FASTER FIRST FIXING

F

or years plumbers have used wooden noggins for fixing pipework in floors and stud walls. Whilst this is a tried and tested method of installation, it is not always the easiest or most convenient method: it can be time consuming to find pieces of wood, cut them to size and fix them in place, then line up the clips in longer pipe runs. Walraven has just launched a shorter version of the popular Britclips RSWB (Rapid Sliding Wall Bracket) for gaps of 10-16″ (25-40cm) – designed for fixing pipes in floor joists and non-standard stud wall divides. Many plumbers have been using the standard length RSWB, and cutting it down to fit smaller spaces. After receiving this feedback, the company decided to make life easier for them and manufacture a shorter bracket. PHPI asked Walraven to demonstrate how it’s done!

Fitting pipework can be a time intensive process. Walraven explains how to install pipework faster with its Britclips RSWB system.

INSTALLATION GUIDE The new 10-16” RSWB is an adjustable metal bracket which can be used for all first fixing from mounting pipework in floor joists or stud walls to bathroom/shower fixings.

1 I The RSWB brackets are supplied in two connected halves. So the first step is to gently bend them to snap the brackets apart.

2 I Slide the two halves together to form the complete bracket.

3 I Bend the fixing tabs at both ends and adjust the bracket to the required length for your installation. There are two brackets available, a 10-16” (25-40cm) RSWB and a 16-24” (40-60cm) RSWB depending on the width of the joist.

4 I Set the bracket back into the joist at the depth required. The bracket can be placed at any depth needed. If it needs to be close to the top of the joist, the fixing plates can be bent easily along the slotted markers to sit flat on the front of the joist, or bend back inwards out of the way.

6 I Pre-drilled holes along the bracket allow you to screw in your pipe clips quickly and easily and get perfect alignment on those longer pipe runs.

Time saver

6b

Craig from CR Plumbing and Heating uses the RSWB. He said: “We keep a box of RSWB brackets on all our work vans, the time-saving element is key for us. We’re using the bracket on almost all of our installations now from bathroom first fixing, long pipe runs through timber joists and stud walls, to repair works. They have really changed the way we work. It’s such a versatile product which helps us get our jobs done quicker and they look great too!”

IN THE

KNOW

There remains a lot that can be done at the installation stage and through lifelong servicing of the boiler, to save end-users money and reduce the environmental impact of their heating system. This would be easier to achieve if there was a greater understanding of the value of these measures, explains Darren McMahon, Marketing Director at Viessmann.

A

s customers don’t generally know what they should be getting from a new boiler installation, or from having it serviced, naturally there is a tendency to focus on price. We see that it’s getting tougher out there to compete. The time has never been better for installers to improve their own knowledge and skills, therefore, and to persist in educating customers on the importance of new boiler performance and efficiency measures, throughout the life of the boiler and with the support of manufacturers. By offering a truly excellent and personalised customer service, installers can differentiate their offer in the local marketplace.

towards homeowners being prepared to consider how they can reduce their contribution to the world’s carbon emissions. As part of your install, there’s no doubt that most of you are explaining the benefits of additional efficiency measures and evaluating whether a power flush, deaerator or magnetic filter are needed, as we see the evidence on social media.

Specification and installation Encouraging a conversation about holistic system efficiency and total cost of ownership may occasionally be difficult and not appropriate for a combi swap, but we do increasingly hear about changes in public mood, e.g. the Blue Planet effect, that point

26 MARCH 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

However, we would also recommend additional discussions with homeowners to explain all the options and considerations, such as, does the system require hydraulic balancing to ensure that all radiators in the system are supplied with exactly the right amount of heat at the same time? Would larger, replacement radiators allow for a more efficient, lower temperature modulating system? Would the property benefit from divicons, mixers, and zoning? In doing so, you could help the customer understand not only the value involved in these areas, but also how that affects your quote compared to the standard price-driven competitor one you might be up against. Whatever Boiler Plus intervention, if stipulated, is being used, a thorough explanation, including why measures such as weather compensation could have a positive effect on fuel bills over the life of the boiler, will increase satisfaction in having made the right decision. Via our ‘Viessmann UK’ YouTube channel, you can watch informative

Use www.rdr.link/pn012 Customers will have confidence in the installer who provides expert advice on low-loss headers, the importance of correct sizing of pumps, the location and legality of condensate pipes, and the cleanliness and treatment of the water in the system. This goes a step further than the usual: does the customer fully understand what they can do with the boiler controls? It’s where manufacturer training courses are instrumental, many of them are free to access. When it comes to system boilers in regular family houses, questioning the required kilowatt output could result in a smaller and more affordable boiler being specified and in reduced running costs. Historically, boilers have been oversized. The average heat loss for a UK property is no more than 6 to 8kW yet most system boiler ranges start at an output of around 19kW. Viessmann has recently introduced the lowest output system boiler on the market, the Vitodens 200 11kW boiler, which modulates down to 1.9kW. For many homes 11kW will be enough and with weather or load compensation, the annual running costs will be cut dramatically.

Viessmann provides a 10-step annual boiler service checklist for heating engineers maintaining its boilers

Servicing Another observation is that customers don’t understand the crucial difference between a boiler safety check and a boiler service. They can sign-up to monthly payment servicing contracts assuming they’ve done all they should to guarantee the health of the boiler but not really knowing what they’re going to get. Installers can build trust by explaining that if their service engineer simply fits an analyser to the front of the boiler and checks the flue-gas products in a visit that takes only 15 to 20 minutes, the boiler will

have had only a basic check for safety. Suddenly, that price doesn’t look so attractive, does it? Viessmann provides a 10-step annual boiler service checklist for heating engineers maintaining its boilers. This ensures the boiler will have been thoroughly cleaned, with all system components, such as the expansion vessel, checked to ensure the boiler is performing well and will last as long as it should. The chances are, customers are not comparing apples with apples when evaluating different boiler replacement quotes. Should we expect them to know how to? Professional, customer-focused installers have a sense of ownership of the install and the customer, through the life of the boiler and the motivation to provide the personal touch. You are well-placed to advise customers what they really need and why. This is the kind of ‘added value’ that wins customer loyalty and helps installers to compete on more than price alone and Viessmann is able to support you with free training and information resources. DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

WISE UP

With the installation of smart controls becoming an increasingly requested job for heating engineers, Natalie Wathan, Product Manager at Drayton, answers some of the frequently asked questions about the recommendation and installation of smart controls.

Q

To decide if a smart control is suitable for a customer what questions should I ask them? Before recommending a smart control, it’s important to find out more about your customer and their needs. Would they be comfortable with a smart control? Do they have a regular schedule or not? Are they energy conscious? Are they looking to integrate their heating with a smart speaker? One of the most appealing factors of smart controls is the ability to control them from your phone. So, whilst systems like Wiser do have the ability to create a set schedule via the app, which is ideal for customers with a set routine, it also offers the flexibility to adjust the settings remotely. This feature is well suited for

families on the go with unpredictable schedules. Multi-zoning capabilities are ideal for multigenerational families that need individual room heating control, or for those who are keen not to waste energy. Systems like Wiser utilise smart radiator thermostats to manage the heating on a room-by-room basis. For example, this can save up to 20% more energy in a three-bedroom semi-detached house over a smart thermostat system alone. It is also useful to find out whether your customer uses a voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant, as many compatible smart heating controls, such as Wiser, allow homeowners to adjust their heating with just a few words.

Q

Are smart heating controls easy to install?

Many smart controls are designed with ease of installation in mind. For example, the Wiser Heat Hub is compatible with the standard UK wallplate so that it can be retrofitted in minutes – making rewiring a thing of the past. Furthermore, to speed up the installation process, no personal data needs to be collected from the customer during commissioning. For further guidance on installing Wiser, Drayton has launched its new online training academy, 9º Know How, which includes easy-to-follow installation tutorials on the Wiser module.

Q

Can I create different heating zones for my customer using smart heating controls?

In a house where smart radiator thermostats are installed in every room, homeowners can adjust the temperature of each room individually to create a ‘zoned’ home, offering more efficient heating control. Thankfully, some smart heating controls on the market offer these multi-zoning capabilities. Wiser allows up to 16 zones to be created within a property by installing its smart radiator thermostats and room thermostats. The Wiser radiator thermostats are designed for simple installation and fit onto to the majority of existing TRV valves, and more smart radiator thermostats can be added to the system at a later date if desired, offering a buildable system.

Q

How secure are smart heating controls?

Many smart controls on the market collect personal data to function correctly. For example, weather compensation often requires the homeowner’s postcode to utilise online weather data. Additionally, for smart controls that allow users to set schedules or active ‘Away Modes’, it is important to ensure that this information does not fall into the wrong hands as it could provide information about when the property is empty. As long as you are recommending a smart control from a reputable manufacturer, there should be little need to worry about the safety of a smart control as it will be designed with the necessary data security mechanisms. Most data collected by Wiser is used to perform the necessary heating function, but when it needs to be stored, it is predominantly done in the cloud. Additionally, many manufacturers offer training courses providing installers with the opportunity to ask any questions about the product's security barriers.

Wiser allows up to 16 zones to be created within a property by installing its smart radiator thermostats and room thermostats.

Q

What kind of other information can smart heating controls offer my customer?

Q

Do smart controls help me meet the additional requirements of Boiler Plus?

To help homeowners better understand and improve the performance of their heating system, some smart heating controls present data relating to energy usage, patterns and potential savings. By being provided with this data, homeowners are consequently influenced to become more mindful of their energy usage, thereby reducing emissions. One example of this is the Insights page on the Wiser Heat app. By clicking on the Insight tile, homeowners will be able to see the percentage of energy they have saved each month by utilising Wiser’s smart modes. The Insights page also features Wiser's Heat Report, which gives the user a detailed overview of the performance of the entire heating system.

The additional requirements of Boiler Plus state that both new and replacement combi boilers must be installed with either; weather compensation, load compensation, a flue gas heat recovery unit or a smart heating control that includes automation and optimisation. As well as helping you to meet the final additional requirement, you can usually tick off another two requirements as most smart controls feature weather and load compensation. For example, this is met by Wiser's Eco and Comfort Modes. For more information on Wiser

With many homeowners seeking underfloor heating, Maincor provides an overview of the installation of its Overboard system.

U

nderfloor heating has many advantages for the end user, maximising on warmth and comfort efficiently, in any type and size of property. An underfloor heating system will generally run at around 45 degrees as opposed to circa 80 degrees used in radiator systems, which means that there can also be energy and running cost savings.

But what about installation? Advancements in technology mean that underfloor heating can be installed almost regardless of floor construction, location within the building, or the stage of the project. Some solutions, such as the Overboard system from Maincor, can be retro-fitted on top of existing floor substrates including floorboards or concrete. Often used for extensions, kitchen refurbishments or upgrading domestic heating systems, the Overboard system is suitable for use below a wide range of floor coverings, on both ground and upper floors. Maincor has supplied PHPI with a simple four step installation guide to demonstrate the process.

Maincor’s step-by-step for using its Overboard system: Before beginning the install, prepare the working area, ensuring it is weather tight and that the floor is solid, level, clean and free of debris. Use a levelling compound to level out any uneven areas and screw down or replace any uneven floorboards.

1 I Cut the panels with a handsaw or use a straight edge and a sharp knife to score them, before applying gentle pressure to snap along the score mark.

2 I Install Maincor edge insulation around the perimeter of the room. The panels must be laid on to a solid, firm sub-floor. Lay the first board in the corner of the room, lightly butted up to the edge insulation, then gently butt the panels up, ensuring they are straight and level. Prior to laying the pipe, the runs should be determined and an effort should be made to minimise the connecting lengths from the manifold to the pipe

the Overboard system is suitable for use below a wide range of floor coverings, on both ground and upper floors.

4 channels. The intended runs should be marked on the panels prior to routing and the pipes should not cross each other within the floor. Fix the Overboard panels directly to the floor using the Main adhesive or Overboard screws provided. Once the panels are fixed and the feed channels have been routed into the panels, the pipe is ready to be laid.

3 I The pipe should be held loosely and walked into the panels. Form the pipe around the ‘bubbles’ in the end returns and press the pipe down into the channels.

4 I Finally, fix down the 6mm ply separating layer. Stagger the joints relative to the panels below and fix down into the Overboard panels with suitable screws. For more detailed information on the Maincor Overboard system www.rdr.link/pn015

Q

Many installers are sole traders, will there be networking opportunities?

Q

How can I get the most out of my visit?

Q

Is there more to see beyond heating and plumbing solutions?

Q

Is there ample parking?

Having organised trade shows for over two decades we know how vital the wider community is to our visitors, many of whom are smaller operators or sole traders. We encourage a community spirit at PLUMBEXPO and there will be lots of like-minded individuals from all areas of the sector to chat with. I have heard that many people have picked up new contacts and work at the event.

The events can be busy – which gives them a great atmosphere – and you’ll need a good few hours at least to look around. I’d also say come with an open mind. Just because you have always done something a certain way doesn’t mean you always should. Suppliers are constantly innovating with new products to make life easier for installers.

PLUMBEXPO runs alongside three other shows: Toolfair, Elex and ProBuilder Live. Toolfair showcases a really wide variety of tools, equipment and workwear. There will be plenty of great demos and installers can get hands-on to try out the products. Elex – although mainly for electricians – has plenty of experts on hand to help any installers with new solutions or advice on standards and regs. ProBuilder Live focuses on the wider building materials market.

Yes, and its free. Plus we ensure the parking is van friendly. Then when you get inside, if you have pre-registered, you’ll have tokens for a free t-shirt, a free cup of tea and a free bacon roll. What a great way to start your visit. To register visit www.plumbexpo.co.uk

LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY…

Peter Dumigan, Managing Director of the Hultafors Group UK, owners of Snickers Workwear, Solid Gear Safety Footwear and Hellberg Safety PPE, outlines the importance of hearing protection.

L

ong term damage to your hearing can be caused by the noise from regular daily use of even the most basic hand tools – drills, angle grinders, disc cutters, circular saws, even hammers – if you don’t wear proper ear protection. Noise induced hearing loss is the most commonly reported occupational disease with over 800 million people around the world are affected by the condition. Over 30% of all workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels and one in four manufacturing workers who are exposed to loud noise does not use hearing protectors. Hearing damage caused by exposure to noise at work is permanent and incurable with research estimating that over two million people can be exposed to noise levels that are potentially harmful. More often than not, hearing loss is gradual as a result of prolonged exposure to noise, but when combined with normal loss of hearing as you The age it becomes a rapidly Control of deteriorating condition. More importantly, the level at which employers must assess the risk to workers' health and provide them with risk information and training is now 80 decibels. So, making the right, well informed decision is as important for the self-employed as it is for employers.

the use of hearing protection is compulsory.

Don’t take hearing for granted Too often we take our health and wellbeing for granted and probably never stop to consider what fantastic sensory organs our ears actually are. As well as helping us communicate, our hearing helps to keep us safe. It is the link to our surroundings and is vital for how we communicate with others. Aside from issues with your mobile phone, think how you’d cope in hazardous situations if you couldn’t hear an alarm bell, a car horn or someone calling to you. We rely on our hearing in so many ways, which is why we should protect it.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Unfortunately, for a significant part of the population, this ability is partially or entirely lost, because of exposure to loud noise. Hearing loss can never be restored but avoiding damage to your hearing is, in most cases, a matter of selecting and wearing the proper protection. Our hearing isn’t designed for many of the sounds we are exposed to today especially the unwanted sounds – those that can potentially damage your hearing. So remember, if you need to raise your voice or scream to be heard when standing about metre from someone on site – then its more than likely that the noise around you is dangerous.

Working on site Sites are noisy places. Not just your mates banter and the radio in the background, but the working environment. Machine tools and plant all make noise, so does the process of using tools and applying fixings. It’s constant, almost incessant. Working on site all the day means that noise is constantly being poured into your hearing. But what many people don’t realise is that every noise source and the length of time you’re exposed to it has an exposure level measurement – and you’ll be surprised how quickly you can reach the maximum daily safety exposure dose without proper protection. For instance, drilling into wood at 92 decibels would only give you 10 minutes safe exposure against your full day’s allowance.

The noise threshold for providing hearing protection is now a daily exposure of 85 decibels.

Drilling into metal creates 96 decibels of noise, a chain saw 99 decibels, a circular saw 101 decibels, drilling into concrete 108 decibels and an angle grinder 109 decibels. Take a look at the chart below and you’ll see that if you haven’t got proper hearing protection, you shouldn’t be on site working and handling tools for very long at all.

Choosing the right protection Always use hearing protection when exposed to harmful noise and if necessary, choose a protector adapted to your work environment, ie a product with ‘level dependent hearing protection’. Hellberg Safety recommends that the calculated level under the hearing protector should be around 75 decibels given that its real-life (attenuation) performance may be affected because of incorrect fitting, misuse and poor maintenance. Performance protection can even be affected by anything that impairs the hearing protectors seal, such as long hair, facial hair and glasses! Finally here’s some useful tips. Choose hearing protection that fits correctly and is comfortable the entire time you are exposed to noise at work. Make sure you’ve got 100% wear time in noisy environments and remember, the use of eyewear can reduce the hearing protector’s attenuation of between 3-8 decibels, so if possible, select thin eyewear frames. Finally, your health and wellbeing on site is just as important as getting a job done quickly, efficiently and in comfort. So choose your PPE products carefully. You can check out the Hellberg Safety website by using www.rdr.link/pn024 where you’ll find more information on choosing the right kind of passive or active hearing protection whatever you’re doing or wherever you’re working on site.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

[CAMERA] CAUGHT ON

Inspection cameras are a staple item in many installers toolkit and Bosch has recently launched a new model – the GIC 120 C. Stephanie Humphreys, Measuring Tools Marketing Assistant at Robert Bosch Ltd answers PHPI’s questions about the new tool.

Q

How might a plumber or heating engineer benefit from having an inspection camera in their toolkit? Whether you are looking for a blockage in a drain or leak in a pipe, inspection cameras are an essential tool for trades people, especially plumbers and heating engineers. They enable the user to clearly visualise previously inaccessible areas, ultimately saving a vast amount of time and money for both customer and tradesman. The Bosch GIC 120 C is the ideal tool for the toolkit, boasting a large 3.5” colour display and a high screen resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, this combined with improved ergonomics of the tool allows a repeatedly efficient and safe use of the tool.

Q

convenience and the 12V battery packs offer optimal power and efficiency, the ability to change the tools power source in general enables the tradesman to avoid interruptions on the job.

Q

How long is the camera cable. Will it reach up in to a ceiling void or under a floor-and does it include a torch to illuminate the working area? The GIC 120 C is equipped with a 120cm long camera cable allowing the user access to a variety of inaccessible areas such as ceiling voids and under floor areas. However, for some people this is not long enough to gain a close enough inspection of their desired area. So a

What power source does the GIC 120 C use? Is it compatible with other Bosch tools? The inspection cameras power source is flexible to the user’s requirements, offering a dual power source ability. It can be powered by 4 x AA batteries using the AA1 adapter or by the Bosch Professional 12V Li-Ion battery packs compatible with both the Bosch Power Tools 12V range and a selection of Bosch Measuring Tools. Whilst using AA batteries provides

longer 300cm cable is available to purchase and with the Bosch quick connector technology, switching camera cables has never been easier. The tool is also supplied with three attachments; a hook, magnet and mirror as well as the standard LED light, all these allow the GIC 120 C to adapt to best fit the situation.

Q

Is the camera waterproof, can it be used in wet areas?

The Bosch inspection camera cable has a maximum waterproof depth of one metre, which means there is no risk of damage when accessing certain work situations, such as water drains and pipes. Whereas normally, any potential blockages or leaks in pipes would result in the deconstruction of the pipe, the tool can easily detect if there are any problems.

Q

The resolution on some inspection cameras is relatively limited with images appearing pixelated. What is the screen like on the GIC 120 C and is a zoom function available?

The new 3.5” screen on the GIC 120 C provides a much broader visual with better spatial awareness. This supported by the

042_PHPI_MAR20_Layout 1 06/02/2020 14:22 Page 43

high resolution of 320 x 240 pixel enhances the screen visual clarity giving a clearer image for the user. In addition, the inspection camera has three zoom options up to 2.0 x, allowing the tool to adjust to any situation and highlight key smaller details.

Q

Sometimes, when using inspection cameras, it can be difficult to figure out which way is ‘up’ – especially when looking down a pipe. Have you tackled this issue on the GIC 120 C?

Twisting cables and switching between 90° rotations is complex especially when viewing the screen, so the Bosch GIC 120 C has introduced the new ‘Up is Up’ function to simplify this for the user. This feature offers the best orientation by rotating the screen, therefore even if the camera is upside down, the image will always appear the right way up on the screen. This is a clear USP for the GIC 120 C.

Q

Can the user take photos or videos from the camera and how can the recorded images be transferred onto a computer?

The GIC 120 can be used to document pictures and videos through a Micro SD card which allows for easy transfer to external devices, like laptops. This beneficial feature means that after the initial inspection the user can continue to examine the situation from anywhere. Not only can the images be directly transferred, gallery mode allows images and videos to be saved and viewed on the device straight away with the help of the soft keys. These features enhance the products ability to ensure that the job is conducted as easily and efficiently as possible.

Q

What else is included with the GIC 120 C?

The GIC 120 C comes with many items included to optimise the use of the tool. The two main options being: L-BOXX and the carton version. Both these options come with: the 8.5mm camera head, the 120mm camera cable, a hook, magnet and mirror attachment, a 4GB MicroSD card and a USB cable. The additional benefit of the L-BOXX version is that a 12 V battery charger and a 1 x 1.5 Ah Li-ion battery are included, in comparison to the carton option with only comes with alkaline batteries. The tool comes with one year’s warranty, with the option of an additional year (3 years) if the tool is registered within 30 days of purchase on the Bosch Professional website. PLUMBING & BATHROOMS

Last November Aqualisa launched a ‘trade-only’ range of showers, its AQ Collection. PHPI speaks with the company’s Colin Sinclair, Senior Channel Marketing Manager, to find out the reasons behind this move, and some of the benefits of the new range.

SHOWER POWER Q

Why has the company launched a ‘trade-only’ range of showers?

Aqualisa’s product strategy has always been based on a clear understanding of customer needs, in particular the installer community that has always been integral to the success of our business. The new AQ mixer range has been developed specifically for the trade counter where we believe consistent, pricing and ex-stock availability are key drivers for installers. This is a very competitive product sector but the Aqualisa name has an undeniable reputation for quality and reliability and this range will stand out from the crowd in terms of value for money. We recognise the benefit of developing

We recognise the benefit of developing products with strong installation benefits.

products with strong installation benefits, so this collection not only has aesthetic value but also integral features that make it easy to locate and fit.

Q

What are the main features of the new AQ Collection? Are there any features that make life easier for plumbers during installation? Aqualisa has always been associated with performance quality and design innovation. That is again well demonstrated with the new AQ Collection. Safe temperature control and the five year parts and labour guarantee are also important features that apply to the whole AQ range. The AQ range is solidly built with metal handles, the round and square bar valves come as single or dual outlet showers with separate flow and temperature controls. Dual outlet models have an integral diverter that switches from an adjustable handset to 200mm drencher head, suitable solely for high-pressure water systems. The square bar valve dual outlet has a unique

telescopic shower column designed for a more flexible installation process. The single lever valve is a solid one-piece brass body that is suitable for all UK water systems, with adjustable valve inlet pipe centres for easy fitting as either new or a replacement. The brass dual lever valve, again made for all plumbing systems, is supplied as an exposed or concealed fitting in one box meaning the installer has a choice depending on style preference and pipework. Adjustable fixing points for the shower rail make installation even easier.

046_PHPI_MAR20_Layout 1 07/02/2020 10:15 Page 47

Q

What designs options are available in the AQ range? Are there both concealed and exposed options?

The new extended range based on the AQ series includes the popular 75 and 150 round bar valve models, a modern square bar valve, a compact single lever control valve and a stylish dual control valve, that can be fitted as either an exposed or concealed unit. The modern AQ Collection, all in polished chrome, now offers more choice of looks and style to fulďŹ l individual design preferences and also, of course, is still the same easy and exible installation that it’s always been. The range selection covers all approved UK water systems. As the modern consumer is looking for a custom design to match their personal preferences, so the AQ Collection provides a selection of valve styles and shower heads with the guarantee of quality and reliability as standard throughout the range.

Q

Do any of the showers have added safety features?

Q

Will there be enhancements to this range in the near future?

The square bar valve is cool touch for added safety. The products also offer precise temperature control to protect vulnerable users such as children and the elderly from the risk of scalding. The maximum and minimum temperatures can be pre-set by the installer so families can be certain of safe showering.

Aqualisa believes in continuous range improvement. With this in mind, the AQ Collection will be further supported in 2020 with performance upgrades and added value features that appeal to both installers and homeowners. We are always committed to developing products that meet market needs and dedicated to listening to installer feedback on our products and services. The re-launched Aqualisa Installer Club, now with well over 1000 members, has become

the perfect sounding board for what installers really want. To discover more about the AQ range www.rdr.link/pn035

SEAL THE DEAL

PHPI goes back on site to see how pipework can be installed quickly and smartly using PipeSnug.

W

e first reported on PipeSnug back in 2017 when Chris Burdett and Alex Lever launched their easy to install product to the trade. Cut to 2020 and PHPI is back on a cold and wintry building site in Hertfordshire to see how the PipeSnug story has moved on since our last visit. “Lots of installers are using the product and are big fans of the advantages it

1

brings, but we still want to spread the word to plumbers all around the country on just how much time PipeSnug saves on site,” explains Alex. “Today is a perfect example – it’s throwing it down and freezing, but you can still fit it in seconds, without having to wait for dry conditions to mix mortar or apply sealant.” The PipeSnug concept came to builder Chris out on site one day when he was

STEP BY STEP

preparing to point mortar around a waste pipe for what, “seemed like the millionth time”. The idea started to gain traction when he met Alex, his business partner, through the local school their children go to. After a few drinks one evening, Chris told Alex about his idea and the two of them began to discuss the possibility of manufacturing the product. They didn’t look back.

2

3

1 I The team are working on a loft conversion, so the plumber drills into the wall with a 152mm core drill.

2 I Cutting the waste pipe to length is cold work, but it doesn’t take long.

3 I PipeSnug is pushed into the hole in seconds. No mess, no wet trades.

4 I That’s it, quick, simple and more time in the dry for our plumber.

PipeSnug supports local boxing gym Keen to give something back to their local community the PipeSnug team is working with a boxing gym near to the company’s base. Running since 2004 Hockwell Ring Amateur Boxing Club (HRABC) in Luton is run by local residents. The club’s central aim is to get local young people actively involved in sport. PHPI recently visited the club to find out more about why PipeSnug has got involved: Chris Burdett told us: “I am from the Hockwell Ring area and I love boxing. The club are doing some great things in this community and we wanted to give something back." Whilst we were at the gym we received some boxing training from the HRABC team (above) and also met up with one of the club’s founding members, Kay Prosper, the English Champion at Super-Lightweight. Kay is defending his title on March 7th at Dunstable Conference Centre in an event promoted by Hi-Rize Promotions, which is being sponsored by PipeSnug. For more information go to www.highrize.co.uk

Mess free In case you have not seen the product before, PipeSnug removes the need to point around or seal the hole where pipe exits a building. It is designed specifically to fit the elbow joint on 32 and 40mm waste pipes, once you have drilled the hole using a 52mm core drill. It removes any need to use mortar, silicone or expanding foam, which can become very messy to prepare and use, and doesn’t look great on the building’s exterior. PipeSnug is quicker and cleaner than these methods. Such was the success of the 32 and 40mm versions that the team soon launched a 110mm (4”) version. This larger version of PipeSnug is ideal for soil vent pipes and fits both solvent-weld and push-fit versions of all major pipe manufacturers. That is not to say Chris and Alex are resting on their laurels. “We’ll keep working to persuade even more plumbers to pick up a ‘Snug’. We will be exhibiting across the UK, at shows like Plumbexpo. We also have new versions ready to go so watch this space,” says Alex. To discover more about PipeSnug and the options available www.rdr.link/pn036

UNDER CONTROL T

he humble stopcock underwent a revolution a few years ago when Surestop was launched. Now, the launch of Surestop i-water control, promises further benefits for installers and homeowners as it provides the ability to control water away from the property. The Surestop i-water control water valve and remote unit is battery operated and has been designed to easily integrate into domestic plumbing systems. Utilising smart technology via the Surestop app on a phone or tablet, mains water can be turned off by swiping right anytime, from anyplace and anywhere. Installed around as 30 minutes and WRAS approved, the i-water control can help in the reduction of water wastage, is unaffected by limescale and is supported by the Honeywell Home leak detector and sensing cord. The step-by-step below provides an overview of the installation process, which Surestop believes is a simple install that could save thousands of pounds on water damage repairs.

Surestop i-water control enables homeowners to control their water when away from the home – helping prevent possible water damage. PHPI invited the company to demonstrate the installation process.

2 I Select location for Surestop valve, this is ideally suited to be as close as possible to the switch however, the product does come with pipe of up to two metres to give some flexibility. However, it is important to ensure there are no other cold draw offs between the stopcock and the Surestop valve.

measure 55mm of plastic pipe and remove the section, to accept the Surestop valve. With plastic pipe, inserts must be used. Mark the pipes with a K mark at 25mm from each end to indicate complete insertion. Insert both pipe ends into the Surestop valve up to the K marks ensuring both are fully inserted. Tip: Silicon lubrication may be used to aid pipe insertion.

3

Step by Step – Surestop i-water control 1 I As is standard, ensure you have a good clear work area. Locate and identify the main stop cock. Once the stop cock is located, isolate the water supply and drain, ensuring no water is left.

4 I Select the location for the i-water control switch unit, ideally this is suited to being situated in a cupboard or under the sink, (it can actually be situated up to six metres from the valve). Due to this unit being controlled via an app, and therefore does not require unobstructed access at all times, there is no great necessity to have this being positioned in an exposed place. Insert AAA batteries as provided in the pack before fitting the unit in desired location.

4 5 I Measure the distance between the Surestop valve and i-water control unit then cut the provided pipe to size. Tip: Use blue cutting guide provided to ensure a square cut giving a more precise fit

Connect pipe into both Surestop valve and i-water control unit. Isolate valve and unit, reinstate mains water supply being mindful of pipes being inserted correctly avoiding any a leaks. Use the provided clips for a neat finish. Take out hub from pack and connect to WiFi router via ethernet cable provided. Download the Surestop app from App Store or Play Store onto customer’s phone/tablet. Follow set up instructions b on app to connect valve. Turn on original stopcock and ensure Surestop valve is open, making sure the nearest tap outlet is turned on, press Surestop i-water control unit to ‘off’ ensuring waterflow ceases.

5

5

6 I Test app control by swiping to the ‘on’ position ensuring water flows from the tap immediately. This will then reassure that the Surestop valve, hub and i-water control unit are fitted correctly and all is working. Finally, turn off the tap and the Surestop i-water control is ready for use. TRAINING GROUND

With many predicting a significant growth in Heat Pumps in the coming year, LG Training Manager, Ricky Sethi, explains what training is available to professionals on how to install the LG Therma V air to water heat pump system, and puts the expected boom in sales in 2020 into context.

T

The high temperature air source heat pump indoor unit

he recently released document from the Heat Pump Association – “Delivering Net Zero: A Roadmap for the role of Heat Pumps” provides a stark reminder that in order to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050, the UK needs to start to take decarbonisation of domestic heating seriously now. It states “Heat pumps are already a well-established technology that can immediately and substantially reduce emissions from our heating and hot water consumption. Efforts must be taken now to put them to good use.” The Committee on Climate Change says that 19 million heat pumps need to be installed in the UK by 2050. Despite the benefits of heat pump installations, heat pump deployment in the UK remains painfully low with just 27,000 heat pumps installed in 2018. What we do need is to train a significant number of installers to be able to install heat pumps in the numbers

54 MARCH 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Therma V monobloc

we need to see them being installed, if we are to meet the targets set and the numbers needed to achieve virtually zero carbon from heating, by 2050.

Expanded training opportunities LG has stepped up its efforts to get more installers trained and is ready to begin the heat pump revolution. Training takes place at its two training centres – at the head office in Weybridge and at GREenergy training centre in Chesterfield close to the M1. Two training courses a month have been taking place for a year now and are planned throughout 2020, with the response from those attending incredibly positive. We’re delighted at the level of interest in the Therma V range we have available here in the UK. In particular we have seen huge interest in the Therma V R32 Monobloc unit

054_PHPI_MAR20_Layout 1 06/02/2020 12:27 Page 55

LG has stepped up its efforts to get more installers trained and is ready to begin the heat pump revolution. which requires no F-Gas expertise at the installation stage. It’s a very simple alternative to a boiler driven heating and hot water option and is the simplest installation for traditional installers to get to grips with. The monobloc connects to the wet central heating system in the same way as a gas boiler – no new tools will be required. It’s an ideal entry point for installers to add heat pumps to their existing portfolio of heating options for their customers.

More installers needed The Heat Pump Association’s document highlights the steadily increasing number of installers we will need in the UK between now and 2050 – and that figure rises from just over 1,000 in 2020 up to more than 40,000 by 2050. It’s a staggering figure but represents the number needed to cope with the anticipated workload as the years go by and the recognition that heat pumps are the only sensible way forward as we head for de-carbonisation by 2050. The LG Therma V series of air to water heat pumps comprises a full suite of options – monobloc, splits, and high temperature options. The popular monobloc Therma V air-to-water heat

LG Therma V R32 monobloc

pump operates on the low GWP R32 refrigerant and is available in 5kW to 16kW 1Ø and 12kW to 16kW 3Ø, in a wide operating range of between 10-135Hz and water temperatures up to 65°C without an electric heater. It comes with an energy label rating of A+++. The new version of the Therma V Monobloc contains a plate heat exchanger, expansion tank and a Grundfos water pump. The new unit has a higher capacity due to the choice of refrigerant along with a lower GWP, when compared to R410a. The electric heater can be installed as an optional accessory as this is not always required. How THERMA V R32 Monobloc Works

The latest unit has a 5 to 6dB lower sound power level than previous models and incorporates a number of additional new features including a new type scroll compressor, designed and manufactured by LG Electronics with ‘wet vapour’ injection. The unit has excellent performance at low ambient temperatures – 100% at -7°C.

Software support Heating engineers will need to correctly size heat pumps units to a property and many manufacturers including LG have selection software for this. UK heating engineers are extremely important to the decarbonisation of domestic heating and LG will continue to provide free of charge training on the Therma V Heat Pump throughout 2020 to ensure that facilities are there to help increase the numbers of competent heat pump installers. Attending a BPEC renewable course is always advisable and will enable the full range of heat pumps to be available to heating engineers. BUSINESS & TRAINING

MIND THE GAP

With a growing skills gap in the sector Brendan Fenerty, of Alpha Heating Innovation, considers what the building industry can do to attract the next generation.

T

he contributing factors of the plumbing and heating skills shortage are well documented; there is an ageing workforce which is not being replaced by a younger generation who do not see the industry as an attractive and viable option. Britain’s decision to leave the EU has added to the industry-wide fear over the skills shortage. Of the UK’s 270,653 migrant construction force, about 45% are workers from EU countries. When the UK’s divorce from the EU is finalised, there is a real fear that many plumbers, electricians and construction workers who have arrived from overseas will leave, taking their skills and experience with them.

Apprenticeship drive If the industry is going to tackle the skills shortage, it is vital that education, training and apprenticeships are stepped up to attract more young people. Apprenticeships, for example, will give millions a ‘leg-up’ on the ladder of opportunity and are a wise investment for any business.

According to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), three quarters of employers say that hiring an apprentice is a worthwhile investment as it helps them save on recruitment costs, as well as creating assets that are frequently very loyal to the business that gave them the opportunity in the first place. With the demand for plumbers and heating engineers so high, this means that younger trained recruits have an excellent chance of remaining in work throughout their career once the apprenticeship is completed.

If the industry is going to tackle the skills shortage, it is vital that education, training and apprenticeships are stepped up to attract more young people.

56 MARCH 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Hands-on training Qualified tradespeople can only ever be produced through proper training. With technological advances in heating systems and plumbing, it is also important to understand both traditional and more modern systems. As part of this, and in order to tackle the skills gap, Alpha Heating Innovation is making a commitment to training and development with its eight training centres across the UK. The company plans to increase this to ten training centres this year. Whilst training with manufacturers is not compulsory, it does provide insight into how different products and systems work, as well as guidance on industry changes regarding regulations. All too often manufacture training is dismissed out of hand. Granted, the principles of this instructive process remain the same. However, every manufacturer has certain unique aspects to their products which installers need to understand. Further, as new products arrive

on the market, it is essential installers are kept informed of them in order to better advise their customers.

Training content The hands-on installer training course at Alpha Heating Innovation provides practical experience of installation, commissioning, servicing and diagnostics for the domestic boiler range. The course also delves into renewable energy products including GasSaver, FlowSmart and SolarSmart exploring how they work, installation, plus features and benefits. Training also gives installers the opportunity to share best practice ideas, hints and tips that will make their job easier. There is a business case for skills and training which are crucial to our future prosperity. The right kind of training can ultimately improve individual expertise and productivity, which in turn can lead to increased business and greater job satisfaction. One of Alpha’s training facilities

BUSINESS & TRAINING

With your van being the most visible tool of your business, LeaseVan.co.uk is reminding van owners that fast food wrappers, dirty signage and dents and scrapes all project a bad image of a company.

T

radespeople are being warned that failing to keep their vans clean and tidy could negatively impact their business. Motoring experts from LeaseVan.co.uk have reminded van drivers that many customers will choose not to use a certain business if their company vehicles aren’t up to standard. Visible fast food wrappers, dirty signage and dents and scrapes all project a bad image of the company – but can be easily avoided. And dirt might not impact just the business, but also workers’ health if they spend a lot of time in the vehicle.

First impression Tim Alcock of LeaseVan.co.uk said: “You wouldn’t turn up to work in dirty clothes, so why would you turn up with a dirty van? The whole reason vans are branded is so that potential customers can easily spot the details, and if these are all dirty and unreadable it defeats the purpose. “A van should be seen as a moving advertisement. Tidying out your rubbish at the end of each day and giving it a regular clean won’t take long but will work wonders for finding new customers.”

Having a clean and tidy van shows dedication to the company, and also shows it’s something you’re proud of. For more details www.rdr.link/pn046

IMAGE CONSCIOUS These are leasevan.co.uk’s six reasons for keeping a van neat and tidy

1

For safety

2

To ensure branding and contact details are visible

If dirt and grime begins to build up on windows and wing mirrors it can compromise visibility and therefore safety. Also, having very muddy tyres can have an effect on efficient breaking and generally safety.

Treat your van like a business card, hundreds of people a day may see the van, and it has all the information on it for them to become new customers. If they cannot see the details then it results in a lot of missed opportunities, which could have been easily avoided by a quick wash.

3

To enhance your image

You never get the chance to make another first impression. Having a clean and tidy van shows dedication to the company, and also shows it’s something you’re proud of. A dirty van may suggest a poor standard of work, exactly what you’re not wanting to convey.

4

To reduce maintenance costs

5

For a better work ethic

6

For health

Dirt and grime, if not regularly cleaned, can cause much more serious problems to your van, such as making it rust quicker than normal – again not a good look. Regular washing will also mean you’re having to pay close attention to the van meaning any problems will be caught early on, instead of being left to get worse.

We’ve all heard the saying ‘tidy desk, tidy mind’ – the same can be said for your van. If it’s clean and clutter free it’s likely you will also feel like this helping you to de-stress in, what is, your office.

Germ and bacteria can quickly build up, and when you spend a lot of time in your van it’s not a great place to be. It’s important to clean the interior of the van too – places such as the steering wheel and gear stick which you touch more than anything else.

BUSINESS & TRAINING

TRAINING IS FOR LIFE…

Upskilling can bring many benefits to forward-thinking businesses looking to thrive in the ever-changing building-services sector. Mark Krull from Logic4training explains.

W

ith so much change happening within the building services sector, it is never too late to gain new skills and expand your business offering. We are facing a monumental shift in the way we heat our buildings over the next 30 years as we head towards net zero by 2050. Forward-thinking businesses need to evolve alongside industry changes to thrive, becoming multi-skilled and flexible enough to face the challenges of the future.

Business benefits Future-proofing your business is just one of the many benefits of investing in ongoing training: ● Happy and productive workforce –

Research shows that learning new skills increases job satisfaction. Creating a culture where staff feel valued and connected to the success of the company leads to increased motivation and productivity. ● Staff retention – Businesses that are

committed to staff training and career development are more likely to retain good staff and attract the best new talent. ● Fill skills gaps – There is a longstanding

skills shortage within the building services sector. As well as injecting fresh skills and ideas into your business, upskilling offers the opportunity to fill gaps in the wider sector, taking on more complex (and better paid) contracts that require specific skill sets.

● Manageable route to expansion –

Training up existing staff with transferable skills means pay can be scaled as expertise grows; much less risky than paying an experienced operative from day one.

Become multi-skilled There are lots of upskilling options available:

domestic electrical works without relying on sub-contractors. ● Commercial changeover – Ideal for

domestic installers seeking a challenge, commercial changeover qualifications enable operatives to work on larger gas appliances, as well as options to specialise in certain areas; including catering and commercial laundry – ideal for work in schools and hospitals.

● Becoming Gas Safe Registered –

Becoming Gas Safe registered could increase your capacity and income. Many multi-skilled building services engineers start out their careers in plumbing and there are specific training routes to ACS registration designed for candidates with transferable skills.

it is never too late to gain new skills and expand your business offering. ● Domestic electrical skills – Most

plumbing and heating installers will need to carry out some minor electrical work in a secondary capacity, such a wiring up a gas cooker, boiler or shower. Part P training courses are ideal for experienced installers, giving them the necessary skills to carry out minor

● Sustainability/energy efficiency – As

electricity becomes greener, heat pumps offer a low-carbon alternative to conventional boiler driven heating. Consumer demand for heat pumps is set to rise, so getting trained up could give heating installers a valuable head start. Other growing markets include heating controls, smart meters and energy efficiency. ● Bespoke training – We work with

building services businesses to identify their skills gaps, developing and delivering bespoke training to meet company needs. With so many factors at play, it will be the businesses that embrace the changes within the building services engineering sector that succeed in the years to come. SHOW YOUR

RESOLVE

With the heat pump market set for growth, HIES is advising that installers should have an efficient way to resolve complaints or disputes.

W

ith much talk of how the heating sector can play its part in reducing the nation’s carbon emissions, it is likely that the already growing heat pump market could be set to expand rapidly. However, as the sector grows installers should prepare for the potential problems that are often witnessed when a market undergoes rapid expansion. Poor specification, issues over installation, users not being advised properly on the correct usage and energy savings not being realised are just a few of the teething troubles that can be expected. And, with installation costs for ground source heat pumps running into thousands of pounds, it is possible that the sums involved will be large. An effective Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme can help to handle such problems, when consumer complaints or issues can’t be resolved directly. ADR services are included as part of the HIES Scheme (The Home Insulation and Energy Systems Quality Assured Contractors Scheme) which both members and consumers can access.

Proactive method Far from being a last resort, Alternative Dispute Resolution can be employed as a proactive method to prevent matters escalating too far when issues can’t be resolved directly with the customer. The benefits for installers of using an effective and impartial ADR scheme can include not only savings on time, resource and cost, but also it can help avoid damages to reputation given the rise of online reviews and publicity around complaints. A long, drawn out dispute can prove very costly in all aspects. Using dispute resolution early on is a proactive method to prevent matters escalating too far, avoiding lengthy court cases and spiralling legal fees.

“We have the ability and in-depth technical expertise to understand situations from both sides,” says Charlotte Pilkington, QASSS Dispute Resolution Manager. “We have the knowledge and experience to be able to help customers and installers to compromise on a fair outcome.” Recent figures show the benefits of using ADR to reach a fair and speedy resolution. From July to September 2019, QASSS (QA Scheme Support Services), which operates the HIES scheme, had an average resolution time of just 3.59 days, as compared to the UK average ADR resolution time of 80 days. Further, 98.4% of complaints were resolved without need for referral to the Ombudsman. Charlotte concludes: “We provide a reasonable and fair resolution to help resolve the dispute in full and reach a settlement agreement allowing both parties to move forward.” For more information on the services that HIES and QASSS offer www.rdr.link/pn048

Even as the plumbing and heating industry finds itself at the forefront of emerging technologies, it faces a skills gap that threatens to worsen. Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), outlines the extent of the issue.

BRIDGING THE SKILLS GAP I t is widely acknowledged that there is a skills deficit in plumbing and heating, as the number of young people currently joining the industry is outpaced by those leaving it. Even for those already working as engineers, the rate of technological change across the sector means that the skills required are ever-changing.

The apprenticeship gap Future-proofing our industry has to be a key priority, especially in light of upcoming fundamental changes, such as the delivery of heat to homes. Providing a clear route for those looking to enter the profession is a major objective for the CIPHE, and the new Trailblazer Apprenticeships are a step in the right direction, with Level 3 equivalent qualification at its core. However, demand for apprenticeships continues to outstrip what is offered by employers, which is unsurprising when you consider that the majority of the plumbing and heating industry is comprised of sole traders and micro SMEs. There must be greater financial support for these types of businesses, to encourage an influx of apprentices that will help to bridge the skills gap. It must also be acknowledged that for any apprenticeship to be a success, it must meet the needs of the businesses responsible for providing on the job training.

How CPD can help

For those already working as plumbing and heating engineers, it is crucial that they continue to keep abreast of the latest best practice and regulatory/technological advances. By maintaining a regular commitment to training, individuals can ensure they remain at the cutting edge of the industry, and avoid falling behind their peers. Once again, the financial considerations associated with CPD will be a factor, but it is important to think of training as an investment. It helps to expand an engineer’s capabilities and expertise, ultimately equipping them for a more secure future. With low-carbon solutions becoming increasingly prevalent, it is likely that the majority of those currently installing domestic heating solutions have not been educated yet on future solutions. CPD will not just be desirable, it will be a must.

Professionalism and licensing The plumbing and heating industry is largely unregulated, and unlike in the gas sector, anyone can set up a plumbing and heating business, regardless of experience. The CIPHE continues to make the case for statutory licensing of engineers, which would help to prevent rogue traders, protect the livelihoods of the professionals already operating, raise the overall standards of the industry and improve outcomes for customers.

64 MARCH 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

This would be a massive step towards halting the growth of the skills gap, but it is also linked with boosting the standing of plumbing and heating engineers. It is important for individuals to be proud of their profession, to acknowledge their own status as engineers, and take genuine pride in the work that they do. The skills shortage that we currently face will get worse if action isn’t taken. There must be a concerted effort to provide routes for talented individuals to enter our industry, and an acknowledgement from those already in it that ongoing learning is crucial. Forget self-driving cars taking over the roads – scientists at the University of Richmond have taught rats how to drive tiny cars! Kelly Lambert and her colleagues noticed the intelligence in rats, after watching them recognise objects and complete simple tasks for food rewards. She decided to test whether the rodents could learn more complex tasks, like driving. A mini car was fashioned out of a clear plastic food container on wheels, with an aluminium floor and three copper bars functioning as a steering wheel, according to the New Scientist. Six female and 11 male rats were put to the test and were rewarded with pieces of cereal. According to Lambert, not only were the rats able to “navigate the car in unique ways,” driving even seemed to reduce stress – they may even get the same kind of satisfaction as we get when we learn a new skill. So next time you’re on the road, keep your eyes peeled for rodent racers!
