Winter conditions Winter is a tiring time for heating engineers and plumbers, with many call-outs typical of the season. Particularly cold weather can further the demands on tradespeople operating in the sector with customers often in need of support with frozen pipes and faulty heating systems. Alongside the cold, the lack of daylight can also be an issue for many people – and attempting to fit in multiple jobs can be hindered by poor driving conditions. Of course, there are great opportunities this time of year as well, but while attempting to support valued clients it is important that plumbers and heating engineers also take care of their own well-being – both physical and mental. One organisation that has been highlighting the issue is insurance company Toolbox by Admiral. It recently provided some top tips for business owners and sole traders to avoid winter burnout. They included maintaining a healthy lifestyle and setting realistic goals: “By setting realistic and achievable goals, you can maintain a consistent workflow without overburdening yourself or your team with impossibly tight deadlines. This thoughtful planning can significantly lessen stress and help prevent burnout,” it said. The organisation also suggested that people make sure they spend some time on well-being activities and suggested listening to podcasts or music, reading, pursuing a hobby or spending quality time with loved ones. Another suggestion was to invest in appropriate gear for the job. During cold winter weather heating engineers and plumbers often work in locations where the heating is off and being dressed appropriately is key. Talking of workwear, in this issue we report on some new work trousers from Snickers Workwear that feature integrated knee protection. With plumbers spending parts of most working days on their knees, appropriate knee protection is an important consideration. Please turn to page 42. The winter can be a great time of year for plumbers and heating engineers, with plenty of opportunities to earn whilst supporting customers and local communities in need of reliable heating systems. Taking a little time to get organised and prepared for the colder, darker days of winter can reap rewards in the long term, ensuring you are not burned-out before Spring comes around.

TALON OFFERS FREE SAMPLES OF ITS EZ JOIST CLIP Talon’s EZ Joist Clip is designed to make pipework installations safer, quicker and easier for installers, especially in challenging overhead, high up and hard-to-reach areas. Now, to encourage installers to try the solution, the company is offering free samples of its EZ Joist Clip. “The obvious choice is to use a nail-in clip, which Talon is also proud to manufacture, but unless you can contort yourself like an octopus or hang upside down like a bat, you will have limited space when hammering in the pipe clip. This can become unsafe and cost time,” explained Mike Morris, Marketing Manager at Talon. "We are proud to provide a solution that can be quickly and safely installed in any location, simplifying the pipework installation process like never before." Designed for both 15mm and 22mm pipes and available in black or natural, the company says the clips have the same strength as Talon's original Hinged Clips. WINTER BURNOUT To help protect business owners and sole traders from suffering burnout throughout the winter months, the trades insurance experts at Toolbox by Admiral has provided some tips for warding off fatigue. A spokesperson from Toolbox said: “Surviving winter burnout as a business owner or tradesperson is about flexibility, well-being, and realistic expectations.” Tips include implementing flexible working hours, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and investing in the gear you need. It also suggests that tradespeople should set realistic goals and expectations to accommodate possible weather-related interruptions and spend some time on wellbeing activities.

REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE BOLSTERS PLUMBING AND HEATING MARKET The latest figures from the Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) report show total value sales for October 2023 through specialist plumbing and heating merchants were up +3.3% in 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. However, it was price (+5.7%) and not volume (-2.3%) driving growth. Mike Rigby, CEO of MRA Research, which produces the report said: “While there was a +9.0% seasonal lift in October’s volume sales compared to September, volumes were still down -2.3% year on year. “With UK construction output in decline (construction output decreased -0.3% in the three months to October 2023) and housebuilding in the doldrums, an autumn of heavy rainfall and strong winds further hampered housebuilding, so seasonal volume growth for plumbing and heating trades came predominantly from the repair, maintenance and improvement market. ONS data suggests the RMI market increased +1.3% in October.”

SPECIAL REPORT

IMPROVING S h owe r EXPERIENCES Adam Treen, Operations Manager, provides a guide on how installers can help customers improve their shower experiences.

Q

Grundfos supplies Shower Pumps for both Positive and Universal heads. What is the difference between these and how can installers calculate which version is required for an installation? A Universal pump should be installed when the outlet (let’s say a shower head) is less than 250mm in vertical distance from the exit of the cold-water storage tank. The condition exists where the flow from the outlet is less than 0.5 litre/minute. Typically, this is where insufficient pressure, under gravity, can provide flow to the outlet. A classic example is where a loft has been converted with an ensuite and the cold-water storage tank is then not higher than the outlet of the ensuite shower. A positive shower pump is therefore where there is more than 0.5 litre/minute of flow from the outlet. In pump performance, 1.0 Bar is generally considered low pressure, 1.5-2 Bar is medium pressure and greater than 3.0 Bar high pressure. E.g. to run multiple showers / heads.

Q

Do you offer any help to plumbers requiring assistance in selecting the correct Shower Pump for an installation? Help is always at hand for installers to make the right decision about which pump to choose. For general information on the range of Grundfos products check out our main site, where you can also find a helpful shower pump selector, which will direct the installer to the correct pump.

Q

For instance, which Shower Pump would be most suitable to boost the shower in both a family bathroom and an e-suite? Once identifying the install as either a positive or universal scenario the most suitable product for this would be a 2 Bar composite or brass pump. The selection of either of these is then down to budget, where the premium more robust brass pump will offer longevity and the composite STR2 is suited to space constrained environments.

Q

Where is the best place to install a Shower Pump?

A shower pump should be sited as close to the hot water cylinder as possible, however if the shower pump is fitted in the loft or above a hot water cylinder minimum static head is required 0.5litres/minute.

Q

Do Grundfos Shower Pumps overcome any air pockets that may be in the system? To minimise air pockets within the system we would recommend the installation of a

12 MARCH 2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

surrey flange to the hot water cylinder. All Grundfos shower pumps are designed to minimise water turbulence within the pump head and therefore overcome air pockets issues commonly encountered in centrifugal style shower pump designs.

Q

Are connection hoses included?

All Grundfos shower pumps are supplied with high quality braided hoses with minimal bore reduction that can influence water flow to the outlet.

Q

Does the company’s Shower Pumps confirm to WRAS UK approval? Grundfos shower pumps have all been WRAS approved, and all shower pumps have been 100% tested for performance, prior to leaving the UK factory. For more information please www.rdr.link/pbb007

SPECIAL REPORT

FROM THE Top... DOWN Mixergy reveals the role of thermal stratification in how the Mixergy cylinder works.

U

nlike most cylinders that heat water from the bottom up using coils or an immersion heater at the bottom of the cylinder, Mixergy cylinders use thermal stratification to make storing hot water more energy efficient. Simply put, thermal stratification is the result of heat rising; hot air rises above cooler air and hot water floats on top of cooler water. The area between the hot and cold sections of water is known as the thermocline. The Mixergy cylinder starts by heating a small volume of water at the top of the cylinder, either with an immersion heater or a coil at the top of the cylinder and then growing that volume of hot water downwards. A sensor in the cylinder lets the user know exactly how much hot water is available. Using thermal stratification and smart technology, only the required amount of water is heated, reducing heat losses, and the water gets to a useful temperature quicker. This means it is 21% more efficient than traditional cylinders when operating with a standard gas system boiler, as validated by the Energy Saving Trust.

Smart control The Mixergy cylinder needs to be connected to the internet and the app downloaded to allow full control of the system. When the cylinder is connected, a blue connectivity light shows on the gauge. The cylinder must be registered and connected online to validate the manufacturer’s 25 year warranty. Once an account has been set up and verified on the app, there are lots of useful features. The app will tell users how much hot water is in the cylinder, what the temperature is, what it is costing and how much space is left. Users can use the app to boost it to provide 100% hot water and change the temperature. There’s a daily schedule to ensure hot water is available when needed, and also a holiday mode, for setting departure and return dates and the temperature required while away.

Frost protection Important for the winter months, the cylinders have built-in frost protection. This is especially important when installed in an

14 MARCH 2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

The Mixergy cylinder can be integrated into existing home automation systems unheated loft or garage. The cylinder’s smart technology continually monitors the internal temperature, and if the water at the bottom of the cylinder drops below 5°C, it will automatically heat up the water to prevent freezing. This gives peace of mind for the end user, knowing that their hot water and heating system is protected from freezing, even when they are away from home.

Home automation The Mixergy cylinder can be integrated into existing home automation systems, for example it can be controlled using Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Hive from British Gas. As more flexible electricity tariffs become available thermal stratification means there’s more space in the smart cylinder to take advantage of economical hot water. By either using an API straight into the energy provider or

014_PHPI_MAR24_Layout 1 07/02/2024 20:56 Page 15

putting the details manually into the app, the cylinder can be programmed to only work with the electricity is at its cheapest. This also works for homes with solar PV. A solar diverter can be retrofitted to the cylinder, heating water for free, when the sun is shining. For installers, the benefit of the Mixergy app over a programmable heating and hot water control is that you don’t need a dual twin channel programmer, you just need a single channel programmer for the heating, and the hot water is controlled via the Mixergy app.

Heat pump ready When the Mixergy cylinder is installed in conjunction with a heat pump, an external plate heat exchanger is fitted to the heat pump flow and return. The heat energy is taken from the system loop via one side of the plate heat exchanger, whilst pulling cold water from the bottom of the cylinder

When the Mixergy cylinder is installed in conjunction with a heat pump, an external plate heat exchanger is fitted to the heat pump flow and return.

through the other side of the plate heat exchanger. The advantage of this is that energy is always transferred from the coldest part of the cylinder and forced convection occurs on both sides of the heat transfer surface, achieving a low thermal resistance and the best possible COP. This overcomes the problem of coil lock-out, which occurs in standard cylinders when about half of the cylinder coil is in hot water. This is because heat energy moves less easily through the hotter part of the coil because the temperature of the water in that area of the cylinder is already high. As the heat pump tries to heat the water in this partially heated state, the system loop temperature has to increase, reducing the overall COP of the system.

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

SUPPORT SMART-SAVVY CUSTOMERS The energy crisis and uncertainty around renewable heating sources mean that installers have a crucial role to play in guiding customers on how to drive down energy costs. James Clark, Training Manager at Drayton, discusses why continued training is key to navigating the ever-changing landscape of smart heating controls.

C

hanges in modern and renewable heating systems, coupled with the rising demand for smart heating controls, highlights the need for installers to undertake regular training. Such training can help them in supporting their customers in keeping up to date with the latest technical developments and making the most of controls, which can help to cut the cost of their energy bills. But just how can regular training set installers apart and how can these initiatives be accessed?

Adopting technological changes Heating systems of today have transformed thanks to unprecedented developments in technology. However, this landscape continues to evolve and smart heating controls continue to advance. Therefore, it is key for installers to stay ahead of these changes in order to understand how this technology should be installed, commissioned and how to troubleshoot any issues to support their customers switching to new means of controlling their heating. Attending training is also a great way to keep on top of the newest features being introduced into smart heating controls, so they can explain the benefits to their customers.

Navigating regulatory changes The heating industry is subject to regular regulatory shifts and with changes expected to remain a constant with the advent of new heating systems such as heat pumps, installers should be in the know about the impact of new installation practices. Training serves as a way for installers to remain informed and ahead of the curve on important compliance changes by getting the insight they need to know from qualified industry professionals, to ensure that their work aligns with industry standards, mitigating any risks to the homeowner.

Expanding your business With big targets to meet when it comes to the installation of renewables here in the UK by 2030, many installers are looking to upskill and expand their business by becoming MCS certified. By attending complementary training on heating controls alongside their MCS training, installers can get familiar with which solutions are compatible with heat pump and other renewable systems so they know what to recommend when quoting for an install, as well as understand how heating controls can be set up to best to manage the system. By knowing which heating controls offer modulation,

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS weather compensation and features like optimum stop, installers will be in a prime position to truly optimise a renewable system to obtain efficiency savings.

Enhancing customer experience When upgrading from a traditional thermostat and programmer, BEAMA found that smart heating controls can generate up to 18% in annual savings, and with the cost-of-living crisis still affecting many UK households, installers well-versed in commissioning smart heating controls will be helping to support customers with cost-savings. According to Drayton research undertaken during 2022, 70% of homeowners stated that they believe they are wasting money on energy bills because they do not fully understand their heating. Therefore, those educating themselves on smart heating controls will be looked upon favourably by customers who are seeking systems that can help them save money. Not only this, but customers will be looking to installers to guide them through the latest changes to smart heating controls off the back of technological advancements.

Drayton’s training Drayton has committed to supporting installers when it comes to training in a number of ways, offering the flexibility to choose a learning style and timeframe that suits each individual. The free online training academy, 9° Know How, features a variety of modules that focus on the fitting of its wide range of products, including the Digistat, auto-balancing TRVs and Wiser, which, upon completion of the module, awards installers with Wiser Approved Installer status. For those interested in staying up to date with the big talking points in the industry, installers can join the live expert panel sessions on the Drayton Community Facebook Group, which cover a variety of topics including legislation changes. The live sessions, which feature regular appearances from notable heating and plumbing industry experts such as Kimbo Betty, Richard Burrows and Rhiannon de Wreede, allow the audience to put their own questions forward to the panel too. Alongside this, is a host of on-demand training videos that can be found on

Drayton’s YouTube channel. Installers can subscribe to the channel to be notified when new videos are published to keep up with the latest training and can put questions to Drayton experts in the comments section. It is clear that installers who want to expand and build a reputable business should consider regular training and learning opportunities an essential investment to be made. With industry changes occurring regularly, customers will favour, and therefore recommend installers that are knowledgeable and are able to give reliable advice on technology, legislation, and more. DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

JOIN THE

NETWORK

Mike Bennett, Essco Product Manager, explains how the company’s EDGE Heat Interface Unit (HIU) has been designed to maximise the opportunities from Heat Networks.

T

here are currently around 14,000 heat networks in the UK with 480,000 customers, providing around 2% of current total heat demand. In order to decarbonise buildings and reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 in the UK, heat networks are expected to play an increasingly important role. To capitalise on the benefits that heat networks offer, it is vital that systems are designed and delivered with installation, performance, end user control and ongoing maintenance in mind. This includes the heat interface unit (HIU), which is installed in each home to provide

independent heating and domestic hot water, similar to a traditional boiler, but powered by centralised plant. Our team has been involved in the design and supply of many different heat interface units for district and communal heating systems over the past 10 years. With hundreds of combined projects under our belts, it’s inevitable that we have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. Some typical issues include: ● Heat losses from the HIU due to inadequate insulation ● Slow delivery of domestic hot water to outlets

20 MARCH 2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

● Costly metering and billing technology

add-ons ● Problems accessing HIU components

for maintenance ● Complicated and time consuming

pipework installs

Design priorities It all starts with the design, and to minimise heat losses we decided that the HIU should be fully Insulated, including the valve enclosure. The total annual heat loss from the secondary systems within the building, including pipework distribution, fittings and any other equipment, is calculated and divided by the number of dwellings. This calculated value shall be equivalent to no more than 100 W/dwelling or 2.4 kWh/dwelling per day on average. Given that this value is considered to be the maximum acceptable heat loss and not a target to reach, Essco recognise that a fully insulated HIU and first fix valve kit should now be minimum requirement if these limits are to be achieved. The next design priority was delivering a fast response to hot water demands and heating supply, which requires excellent control. Essco uses ESBE PWM 2-port control valves, which are tamperproof, fast acting and go from closed to fully open in just two seconds. The two ESBE flow control valves draw off only the amount of primary flow rate that is necessary to provide residents with the required comfort levels, while maintaining maximum possible efficiency through low return temperatures to the plant room.

Installation and maintenance During the design process, we aimed to eliminate the need for extra brackets or jigs for installation. Therefore, we created a hydraulically reversible unit that allows for all top, all bottom, or heating bottom entry with remaining connections top entry as standard, meaning one size fits all. In addition to this the EDGE is supplied preconfigured with temperature set points such as heating, DHW and keep warm, so it is very quick to set-up and commission. To save the installer from squeezing their hands into small spaces or struggling to access parts, all components are fully accessible via the front of the unit, making installation and maintenance straightforward. The EDGE HIU features inspectable strainers made of site glass for a quick visual check and easy maintenance. These offer two main benefits to service engineers, indication and inspection. The sight glasses provide indication of whether the water is flowing properly, and whether the valve may be blocked with debris and require cleaning. Ordinarily, every year the HIU valves must be isolated, water drained and strainers opened just to see if there is such an issue. Inspectable strainers help to reduce the number of unnecessary inspections by providing year-round visibility. There are also LEDs on the controller, pump and control valves to show the status of the component for visual fault finding. Whilst off-site, engineers can use our Web App for online access to the HIU controller remotely, with advanced settings for quick commissioning. For more information please

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

IMPROVE Andy Thompson, National Sales Manager at Wilo UK, outlines the key considerations when choosing a heating circulation pump, and how the right solution can benefit both installer and end-user.

O

ften referred to as the ‘heart of the heating system’, circulation pumps are only growing in popularity. They work by pumping heated water through a building’s pipework, which is then released into rooms through traditional radiators or appliances such as underfloor heating. It’s important to remember that not all heating circulation pumps are the same, thanks to several aspects that set models apart. Installers are encouraged to carefully consider the range of pumps available on the market, not only for the customer’s benefit of long-term heating efficiency, but also for ease of installation.

Out with the old... A key difference noticeable with newer heating circulation pumps is the use of electronically commutated (EC) motor technology, which allows the pump to operate at a variable speed in accordance with demand. Older models, typically powered by an alternating current (AC), work at a fixed speed, meaning they consume more electricity as they are unable to lower consumption during operation.

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS

Thanks to advances in technology and user controls, the speed of EC motors can be adjusted. As a result, higher energy savings could lead to the pump paying for itself within two to three years. With many consumers continuing to seek ways to cut down on energy costs, opting for a new heating circulation pump is one of the more viable ways to keep the bills down amid the ongoing global energy crisis.

crouched in tight spices while working with tricky electrical terminals, so considering how easy it is to connect the pump up electrically is a must.

A smart choice

Selecting a pump Choosing the right heating circulation pump for a job can depend on a number of factors. Installers should ensure that the new pump is compatible with the existing heating system and has the right delivery head and volume flow. If the pump is ‘smart’, then it should be able to adapt to the building’s actual heating requirements to provide maximum energy efficiency. Many new pumps now come with a variety of physical features and add-ons to benefit both the customer and installer. For

example, some models, like the Stratos PICO, come with a thermal insulation shell as standard to save installers spending time lagging the product. To make the task even simpler, the Stratos PICO comes with a Wilo-Connector, a mains connection cable that requires installers to strip three wires down, pop them into the correct terminal, snap the terminal shut to hold the wire in place and then pop the cover on. The last thing any installers wants is to be

The physical appearance of pumps has changed, primarily for the benefit of installers. Large colour displays now make programming a straightforward task at the source of the pump. Gone are the days when installers would face the long task of working in tiny airing cupboards which would inevitably lead to back and joint pain. Following a recent Water Regs UK survey of 200 plumbing installers outlining that almost three quarters experience joint aches and back pain, it’s clear that change is needed. Fortunately, the newest pumps, like the Stratos PICO, are much smaller than their older counterparts, allowing for an easier fit and navigation of the existing pipework, dramatically reducing the time spent in a tight space.

Wilo’s latest heating circulation pumps come equipped with Dynamic Adapt Plus as the default setting. Once the product has been fitted, the Dynamic Adapt Plus smart feature automatically adapts to the requirements of the heating system, drastically cutting the time needed to set up the pump. Pre-set applications make choosing the right setting for a home effortless and accompanying software applications have also made hydronic balancing easy for installers, as they only require minor data entry to correctly balance a heating system.

Ensuring reliability Despite entering what should be the final stages of the winter months, it remains as important as ever to ensure reliability through not just this heating season, but the ones in years to come. New models are designed to offer peace of mind with self-protecting routines, such as automatic dry-running detection and automatic

Once an installer has fitted a new product, the pump should be looked after correctly through regular monitoring and maintenance. restart, reducing the risk of product failures. Error codes and alarms can show when the pump is running dry or if there is dirt in the system. Installers have the chance to see the history of the fault, like how long it has been an issue, to get a much quicker diagnosis and fix for the homeowner. Considering the estimated 100,000 non-compliant central heating circulation pumps estimated by the BPMA to be entering the UK market every year, it’s crucial that installers always work with the latest pumps from trusted manufacturers and wholesalers. Doing so will make sure that all relevant standards are met, providing the correct level of energy savings, safety and comfort to the user.

While a raft of new heating circulation pumps has significantly improved the overall experience for both users and installers, the future of efficient energy consumption depends on a trusting relationship between the installer, customer and manufacturer. Once an installer has fitted a new product, the pump should be looked after correctly through regular monitoring and maintenance. While tasks of this nature are now much less difficult with newer models, routine inspections should still be performed to check the product’s status so that it is operating at optimal efficiency. ASHP INSTALLATION TIPS To help installers looking at fitting Air Source Heat Pumps, Paul Greengrass, Product Development Director from DivesiTech, provides some tips on installation.

D

iversiTech International (formally known as Pump House) has been working in the UK heat pump sector for over 15 years–working with OEM’s, wholesalers and training organisations to help provide the best installation solutions to deliver heat from the heat pump into the home. We are a design and manufacturing business which has created a range of installation accessories to assist installers fit heat pumps in a cost-effective and efficient way.

Rear air space needs to be

The DiversiTech Type 2 bracket comes with a crossbar to allow for correct spacing of the arms.

Two key functions Air source heat pumps are extremely efficient, electrically driven heating systems, with the main power being consumed by the compressor. The standard refrigeration cycle being applied has been used for many years, with two key functions – compression to produce heat and expansion to provide cold (complemented with the compression and evaporation, which are the other two important functions of the refrigeration cycle). Through the processes mentioned above, heating of the water within the system can be achieved in an economical manner to provide water to radiators, underfloor heating and for domestic hot water.

Basis of a heat pump In its basic form, the heat pump acts in a similar way to a boiler – energy in and heating out. However, the key difference (besides that of operation) is that most boilers are typically fitted inside a home while the heat pump sits outside the home (either partly or as a whole). The heat pump heating cycle provides a coefficient of performance between 3 and 4, so for every 1kw of electrical energy consumed by the unit the home receives 3 to 4Kw of useable heat (or 300-400% efficiency), as opposed to a gas boiler only achieving around about 92% efficiency.

Shown is the CBR2 with 3 arms.

It is extremely important to work with the heat pump manufacturer’s instructions to ensure adequate air flow is provided.

Any reduction or restriction in airflow will increase the demand on the unit’s compressor and will increase electrical consumption, higher fuel bills, and shorten equipment life. A restriction around the heat pump may also obstruct the airflow of the fan – in turn affecting static pressure of fan. External units can either be installed on the floor or wall mounted. Wall mounting brackets need to allow for sufficient rear air space to ensure optimum efficiency is maintained – the length of the arm is critical to allow this to happen. When units are mounted on the floor, rear air space also needs to be considered. The monobloc (air to water) model typically requires 22mm or 28mm copper pipe and taking into account the distance away from the wall of the property, also requires a flexible connector (typically a stainless-steel braided hose). These are similar to those used on taps and shower pumps.

Key factors to consider when installing heat pumps The heat pump requires good airflow to ensure it operates to its optimum. All heat pump manufacturers will have diagrams showing each individual unit requirements. The fan on the units will move between 20m3 to 40m3 of air across the coil. It is extremely important to work with the heat pump manufacturer’s instructions to ensure adequate air flow is provided.

DiversiTech International (formally known as Pump House) has been working in the UK heat pump sector for over 15 years

Insulation When you consider that the heat being generated by the heat pump and flowing through the pipework, if the pipe being routed is outside, it is critical that all pipework and connections are covered by an external grade weather and UV-stable insulation. The normal grey coloured polyethylene insulation used inside a house is not UV-stable and breaks down very quickly when exposed to the external environment. Air conditioning systems would normally have black Class O insulation – which has a high fire and smoke rating, but this is also not ideal in an external UV environment and

can break down within a few years. When this break down occurs the insulation properties are affected, and again the heat pump compressor must work harder and therefore consume more electricity. DiversiTech has undertaken site assessments and using thermal imaging cameras have shown the impact of heat loss when pipework and fittings are not adequately insulated. To combat this, all of our hose sets come with Class O insulation with a coating that is UV-stable and rodent and bird proof.

Bridging the gap The pipework from the unit needs to pass through an external wall of the property and to avoid heat loss via the brickwork due to cold bridging, the pipes need to be insulated all the way through to the inside of the house. The external coil deliberately runs very cold and can produce condensation or frost in cold temperatures. This will require a quick defrost cycle typically built into the heat pump controls. The units can produce between 1,500 to 3,000 litres of condensate

per year, which will need to be directed to a drain* or soak away to avoid icy patches around the unit. The condensate is not the same as the mildly acidic condensate from boilers – so does not require neutralising – and can go straight to a rainwater drainage or a soak away. * For R290 charged units the condensate must go to a soak away and not a drain

WATER TREATMENT

MAINTAINING THE WATER IN A

Heat Pump s ystem

With Heat Pump systems set to become more commonplace in the future Nisar Afsar, Technical Director at Sentinel Performance Solutions, explains how to clean, protect and maintain the system water in a heat pump installation. ike all heating systems, it’s almost impossible to have a contaminant-free system, even if it is clean to start with. As well as the usual build-up of sludge and limescale particles, other contaminants such as biological slimes and fungal growth are likely to occur in low temperature heat pump systems if they are left unprotected. The contaminants can leave the system at risk of breakdown or reduced efficiency.

L

Bacterial growth A big problem that you're likely to find in a heat pump system that you won't find in a traditional heating system is the growth of microbiological organisms such as bacteria, algae and fungi. This is because a heat pump system operates at a lower temperature. A traditional heating system that operates at around 65 or 70 degrees doesn't need a biocide as these organisms cannot survive at the higher temperatures. However, a heat pump system only heats the water to around 40 or 45 degrees providing the perfect conditions for microbiological growth. Poor circulation, discolouration of the system water or unpleasant odours all indicate that the system has bacterial or fungal contamination. This can lead to impaired performance, blockages, corrosion of system components or even a complete breakdown of the heat pump system.

Treatment So, even if there is underfloor heating and no steel radiators or copper pipework, the system needs to be treated after cleaning with an effective biocide, such as Sentinel X700 Biocide. Along with Sentinel’s X100 Inhibitor to ensure protection against bacterial and fungal contamination as well as corrosion and limescale. Just like a traditional heating system, limescale and

corrosion can lead to inefficiency of the system, cold spots on radiators and noisy pipes or ‘kettling’.

Annual service During an annual service visit, the level of inhibitor should be checked to ensure it is at the correct level to provide protection against scale and corrosion. Sentinel’s new testing kit and ‘InstaCheck’ app allows engineers to check inhibitor and water quality levels quickly on site without the need for a subscription.

Magnetic filter The final part of the protection trio comes in the form of a dedicated heat pump filter. We all know that one of the biggest causes of breakdowns in heating systems is the accumulation of magnetite or ‘sludge’. This occurs when any steel components in the system corrode, such as radiators, pipes or heat exchangers. An in-line magnetic filter will capture any circulating insoluble ferrous particles, which can be cleaned out of the filter during the annual service.

A heat pump system differs from a traditional heating system because it uses a glycol-based heat transfer fluid. Over time, in the absence of biocidal treatment products, glycol can degrade and form a gelatinous substance that can’t be captured by a magnetic filter. The Sentinel Vortex700 is a dedicated dual-action heat pump filter with a powerful 9000 gauss magnet that captures magnetic ferrous particles, and a high-capacity 800 micron sieve that filters non-magnetic debris, such as glycol, limescale and installation debris, out of the system. This helps to ensure that the system is working at optimum efficiency and prolongs the service life of the heat pump unit and its components.

Contaminant build-up At some point during the life of the system, there is likely to be a build-up of contaminants for one reason or another, so using the correct additives and having a filter on the system is an effective ‘insurance policy’ to protect it against circulating debris, reducing breakdowns and prolonging the life of the appliance. At Sentinel, we believe that part of our job is to talk to heating engineers about cause and effect: trying to correct a system that has developed problems due to contamination and corrosion is almost always much more time consuming and much more expensive than buying the additives and treating the system correctly in the first place. PEAK CONDITION

Salamander Pumps explores the issue of limescale build up in the home and introduces its new water conditioners designed to treat hard water.

A

lmost 80% of households in the UK suffer with hard water. With outlets throughout the home susceptible to limescale build up due to hard water, the efficiency, performance, and lifespan of plumbing and heating systems can be at risk. Hard water is characterised by high levels of calcium and magnesium, when the temperature or pH levels of the water increases limescale forms in the plumbing and heating system. During this process, dissolved minerals in the water convert into solid carbonate, leading to the accumulation of deposits in pipes, pumps, and fixtures. This causes a huge inconvenience for homeowners, who have to regularly remove the limescale where possible, such as on shower heads and inside kettles. The hidden impact of limescale can cause increased costs and maintenance as appliances, like boilers or pumps, as they become less efficient or damaged due to scale build up.

Water conditioning Salamander Pumps has now addressed these hard water woes by introducing three new water conditioners offering an efficient and low-cost solution. Designed to efficiently treat hard water, these water conditioners will limit scale build up and prolong the life of water using applications and heating systems, with options for a single outlet or whole house water treatment. Operating without the need of a power supply, Salamander Pumps' water conditioners have a Copper/Zinc alloy core, including a semi-precious content, which contains three additional metals. When water passes over the core, a catalytic reaction takes place, which causes the carbonic acid to precipitate. The pH of the water is temporarily increased, which triggers the formation the calcium carbonate in the water. The catalytic treated water has an increased capacity for calcium and carbon which prevents scale build up. The calcium is still in the water it

The water conditioners are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, foregoing the use of chemicals or salt in their operation. BUSINESS & TRAINING

OFF-GRID TRAINING Malcolm Farrow, Head of Public Affairs at OFTEC explores the reasons why 2024 is the year for training and diversification in the off-grid sector.

T

he opportunities for training and diversification in 2024 are greater than ever. Government policies are already starting to impact the off-grid domestic heating landscape, new building regulations are coming into force and consumer trends are changing. Technicians who make the commitment to expand their skillset now will reap the benefits of futureproofing their business and helping drive the UK towards net zero. On the policy front, there’s no ignoring that heat pumps are going to have an increasingly important role in the off-grid sector. Whilst the government has pushed back its proposal to ban the installation of new fossil fuel boilers in homes and

commercial premises to 2035 it has increased the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grants, so the direction of travel is clear. The challenge is there is a chronic shortage of heat pump installers. The government wants to achieve 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028. Estimates vary over how many installers will be needed and whilst the widely reported figure is around 50,000, a report from HHIC said the total number could be closer to 150,000 across the industry. To put this into context, last year, the figure for heat pump sales was 55,000 and there are currently an estimated 3,000 heat pump installers. It’s evident there’s a long way to go.

The demand for heat pump installers is going to start outstripping supply over the coming years and technicians who diversify into this technology today will be able to capitalise on this growing market.

Training courses That’s why OFTEC launched a series of heat pump training courses, for both air source and ground source heat pumps. The courses incorporate both theoretical and practical assessment across different heat pump products to ensure technicians have greater flexibility. They are run through OFTEC’s existing training provider network to simplify the process. The government has also been providing funding to help off-set the costs for technicians. This is changing all the time so it’s worth investigating what could be on offer. Qualified technicians who complete the course can apply for MCS certification to install heat pumps through the Home Upgrade Grant or Boiler Upgrade Scheme once they’ve met the scheme prerequisites. They will also be able to self-certify their own installations as being compliant with Building Regulations.

Liquid fuels

30 MARCH 2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

But that’s not to say liquid fuels won’t continue to have an important role too. There are around 1.7 million UK households on heating oil and technicians working in this market will need to maintain their skills. Building regulations are constantly evolving as the government intensifies its focus on increasing efficiency and deploying low flow temperature heating. With variations in the requirements across different regions of the UK, it’s essential technicians are aware of the requirements to ensure they remain compliant. There’s also increasing support for these homes to transition to a renewable liquid fuel such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). Around 150 oil properties have already made the switch as part of a

030_PHPI_MAR24_Layout 1 07/02/2024 20:34 Page 31

demonstration project by OFTEC and UKIFDA. The government has committed to holding a consultation on a renewable liquid fuel obligation which would help instigate a wider rollout. OFTEC has already updated its technical books to ensure technicians have the skills they need to convert kerosene boilers to HVO as this could be an important part of the future energy mix.

Multi skilled Technicians who incorporate both heat pumps and renewable liquid fuels into their skillset will be well placed to navigate the future off-grid market and play their part in transitioning the off-grid sector onto greener heating systems. As we enter the era of new technologies, we must maintain high safety standards to install these systems safely. Consumers are also increasingly aware of the need to avoid so called ‘cowboy builders’ so having clear and demonstratable credentials is more important than ever.

Technicians who incorporate both heat pumps and renewable liquid fuels into their skillset will be well placed to navigate the future off-grid market. But there are wider benefits too. The UK continues to face a shortage of qualified technicians and, combined with an ageing workforce, this problem is going to become more acute. As an industry, we must continue to promote the career opportunities in the sector and provide clear routes for training and entering the industry.

Reduce running costs Consumers are also struggling with the cost of living crisis, particularly in rural areas, so it’s more important than ever that technicians have the skills to not only install heating systems safely, but to ensure they are full optimised to maximum efficiency and reduce running costs. The opportunity for off-gas grid heating technicians to expand their business into exciting new markets is clear. The challenge, as always, is finding the time to

focus on training. However, we must all recognise the industry is changing. We’re entering a crucial few years with uncertainty over the future outlook off-grid. That’s why this year we as an industry must shout about the benefits of training and futureproof the rural heating market. OFTEC delivers its training through its network of 95 approved training centres. Multiple courses are available and, once completed, technicians can apply for their OFTEC registration. This will typically involve an on-site inspection of an example of your work and assessment of the business. Once registered, OFTEC technicians can self-certify their work and access numerous benefits such as free technical support and regular industry updates. David Meacock, Technical Director at Cistermiser, explains how modern flushing control valves can significantly improve water efficiency.

I

n commercial and public sector buildings, water is mainly used for toilets, urinals and washing. When organisations are striving to improve water efficiency within their buildings, water consumption can generally be reduced across all these areas through technology upgrades – and there is a particularly compelling case for updating urinal flushing controls. Conventional, uncontrolled urinals flush periodically regardless of use, with flushing cycles set to match estimated usage patterns (and potentially continuing even when a building is unoccupied). This outdated flushing technique should no longer be implemented in either new or existing applications in accordance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, which restrict the amount

of water that flushing devices are permitted to use. However, intermittent flushing systems still remain in commercial and public sector buildings – which could be wasting thousands of litres of water a day.

Modern controls Retrofitting modern control valves that more closely align flushing with actual urinal use can help minimise water wastage. Sensor-controlled mains-flushing valves offer the greatest water efficiency gains (while also eliminating the need for a cistern). With Cistermiser’s Direct Flush Discreet (DFD), which is designed for urinals that flush directly from the mains cold water

supply, a flush is automatically activated only when a sensor detects an individual urinal bowl has been used (or when a hygiene flush is required, such as during periods of non-use). Each DFD can save approximately 142,080 litres of water a year*, which is the equivalent of 89,000 cups of tea. Furthermore, a controlled trial commissioned by a leading hotel chain demonstrated that the DFD was capable of reducing water wastage by up to 84 per cent – results that helped Cistermiser secure a second water efficiency award from the Bathroom Manufacturers Association at its recent Sustainability Awards.

Infrared or hydraulic In installations where a cistern is to be retained, upgrading to an infrared or hydraulic control valve can achieve a 75-80 per cent reduction in water use. With an infrared control valve, a measured volume of water is released into the cistern every time a sensor detects movement around the urinals. Once the water in the cistern reaches a set level, the urinals are automatically flushed. Hydraulic control valves operate in a similar way, but the cistern is filled when there are drops in water pressure, which indicates the washroom (and potentially a urinal) is in use. Again, flushing is activated when the water in the cistern reaches a set level. By taking measures to prevent unnecessary urinal flushing, organisations will be helping to protect the UK’s precious water resources. This action will also help

organisations to reduce their water bills. In addition, sensor-controlled mains-flushing valves, infrared control valves and hydraulic control valves are all cost-effective solutions; as an example, payback on Cistermiser products is typically achieved within six to 10 months*. Plumbing installers working in the light commercial sector are frequently relied upon to recommend water efficiency measures to the managers of commercial and public sector buildings, as they potentially have the opportunity to identify areas for improvement when engaged in their everyday work. As well as benefitting the environment, providing water saving advice can add value to the service plumbers provide, enhancing their reputation.

Retrofitting modern control valves that more closely align flushing with actual urinal use can help minimise water wastage Water Efficiency Alongside recommending upgrades to uncontrolled urinal flushing systems, other water efficiency proposals could include replacing manually operated taps and showers with timed-flow or sensor-controlled alternatives, which (respectively) release water for a set amount of time or when an infrared sensor detects a user. Modern taps and showers can also be fitted with flow regulators, which lower water use without having a noticeable impact on performance. In addition, rectifying leaking toilet flushing valves (a third of commercial washrooms have at least one ‘leaky loo’) can save up to 146,000 litres of water per toilet per year. Our EasyflushEVO siphonic flushing valve is designed to eradicate leaks and can be easily retrofitted or installed in new facilities. Today, the volume of water used within commercial and public sector washrooms can be intelligently controlled – and outdated, uncontrolled urinals, which can waste astronomical amounts of water, should be quickly retired. Modern control valves ensure water consumption is kept to a minimum while still activating flushes when necessary – typically saving significant volumes of water without compromising on hygiene. *Based on footfall of 15-20 people per hour, 260 days per year.

vailable in six individual outputs ranging from 48kW up to 180kW, the boiler range has the capability of cascading to achieve higher outputs and increase load flexibility. The company says its 1:10 modulation range enables the boiler to run at a low output with fewer on/off cycles, reducing emissions and increasing component longevity.

Alpha has launched the ProTec NX – a high-efficiency, fan-assisted condensing boiler for commercial applications. For installers, the company says ProTec NX offers an easy-to-fit unit which can be wall-mounted or fixed to a freestanding low or ultra-low frame. The boiler is factory-fitted with a room-sealed ‘C’ flue type configuration but is also compatible with ‘B23’ or twin flue systems using the stub kit. A wide range of hydraulic accessories is available to link boilers, and plate exchangers and low loss headers to feed multiple heating and hot water zones.

Link boilers The ProTec NX has an inbuilt option within the boiler control panel capable of setting programs, temperatures and zones to suit the system need. Using Alpha’s smart commercial controls, it is possible to link multiple boilers in cascade and drive them all from one ‘master’ boiler. Alternatively, installers can use separate controls to manage the ProTec NX, either using Alpha’s own cascade controller or a separate panel from the plant room. Input from these can be ON/OFF control; or using OpenTherm compatibility according to the required demand and energy-saving requirements. Darran Smith, Technical Manager for Alpha, commented: “Our new ProTec NX range offers a brand-new innovative gas

boiler for commercial premises that require a boiler system upgrade. Updating our former ProTec Plus range, NX enables greater ability to link and cascade boilers, depending on power required, and seasonal and building load demands. “All models are approved and certified for hydrogen blended gas when the network begins to offer it, to further reduce carbon levels towards the decarbonising goals. Weather compensation also comes as standard, with the use of a sensor to monitor outside temperature and adjusting the output of the boiler to suit the demand and desired internal temperature. “It is vital for installers to understand the requirements and controls of this system, and the vast opportunities it offers in commercial projects. We offer a wide number of training courses to assist installers in doing this.”

STAY GROUNDED W

hen working on plumbing and heating installations, it could be argued there are there are three important boxes to tick: provide a professional service, keep costs down and profit levels up and stay safe. Being a plumber or heating engineer does carry inherent risks: exposure to hazardous substances, electrical dangers and risk of falls from scaffolding or ladders are all workplace risks you have to be aware of. In fact, despite a wealth of health and safety initiatives in recent years, falls from height remain a major cause of severe injuries and fatalities at work. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported 135 fatalities in work-related accidents in 2022/23; falls from height was the leading cause, claiming 40 lives. Although sealing around pipes would seem like bread and butter for most installers, when it comes to sealing pipes or

installing flues on upper floors of flats and apartments, it can get tricky. Traditionally, the job has required mortar or silicone adhesives but they have their drawbacks: they are prone to weathering, can be messy and time consuming and can’t be used in the rain. And if the hole for the flue pipe is up high, you need a cherry picker or ladder to reach the site, which can be time consuming and costly to get hold of. The HSE advises to avoid work at height where it is reasonably practicable to do so. But how can you seal pipework up high without getting up there to do it? This is where FlueSnug comes in. It can be

fitted on the outside of a building from within, through the cored drilled hole, as they are flexible enough to be pushed out of the brickwork and rigid enough to pop back into place, providing an air and watertight seal flush against the wall. No other materials have to be used to seal the hole around the flue other than the snugs themselves. There is no need for costly scaffolding or ladders and the remove the health and safety risks in working at height. Flues need inspecting and servicing from time to time. But again, there’s no need to be clambering up ladders or scaffolding either. FlueSnug can simply be removed, the flue inspected and the same FlueSnug pushed back in, all from the inside of the building and no working at height.

040_PHPI_MAR24_Layout 1 07/02/2024 19:36 Page 41

Building Regulations As well as making it easy to meet health and safety requirements, FlueSnug also makes it easy to meet Building Regs too. In 2021, Part L of the Building Regulations was changed to help the UK meet its Net Zero targets. It now requires pipe seals and grommets to be used around pipework to prevent warm air escaping a home and also to keep cold air out. PipeSnug and FlueSnug are the only all-in-one solutions which meet Part L’s requirement to seal around pipework inside and out, without the need for sealant, mortar or air sealing tape. The products form an airtight seal against the wall where pipes enter and exit a building so they not only save plumbers time, money and mess, but they

also keep warmth in and energy costs down for homeowners. The ‘snugs also save time in terms of compliance: when checking each installation you can immediately see that the hole around the flue has been sealed and photographic evidence can then be provided to those in Building Control.

There are other clear benefits too. Instead of mixing mortar or applying sealant, both of which can weather and crack, take a lot of time to apply and often leave a poor finish, PipeSnug and FlueSnug can be fitted in seconds, preventing heat escaping, acting as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects and pests and giving a great, neat finish. Eliminating risk and the need for costly scaffolding or ladders, these solutions not only enhance safety but also simplify compliance with Building Regulations and provide quick and effective sealing, promoting energy efficiency and delivering a polished, professional finish. PipeSnug is available in 32mm, 40mm and 110mm in black, white and grey. The 110mm version fits a 152mm core drilled hole and fits all push-fit and solvent weld soil pipe fittings. FlueSnug fits a 152mm core drilled hole and is available in black and white. PipeSnug, launched in 2017 by builder Chris Burdett and Alex Lever, together with FlueSnug have been used by thousands of plumbers and builders, national housebuilders and local authorities. In June 2023, Talon agreed an exclusive worldwide licensing deal with PipeSnug. Chris and Alex continue to advise and consult as they potentially look to expand the range. PHPI takes a look at Snickers Workwear’s new AllroundWork, Stretch Trousers with Capsulized™ Kneepads and Holster Pockets – a solution designed for tradespeople who are on and off their knees throughout the working day.

P

lumbers spend a lot of time on their knees – in lofts, on bathroom floors, under kitchen sinks – the list is long and wear on the knees can be hard. So, any solution which promises knee protection, but is combined with durable and flexible work trousers is worth an early look. Enter the Snickers Workwear AllroundWork, Stretch Trousers with Capsulized™ Kneepads and Holster Pockets. In this latest product the workwear specialist has brought together more than four decades of innovation in work trousers with its established knee protection solutions. The result is a pair of rugged work trousers with fully integrated, certified knee pads. The trousers are made from tough CORDURA fabric, which provides both durability and strength while being resistant to tears and scuffs. There are a lot of storage areas, including two holsters and pockets galore. The Capsulized kneepads, designed and engineered in partnership with YBC®, have been developed to deliver effective penetration protection and impact absorption, whilst remining comfortable when both kneeling and walking.

Built-in It is the way the kneepads have been incorporated into the trousers that has born this new solution.

A CORDURA stretch covering provides external fabric durability, while inside there is a layer of high density foam which combines with Ortholite comfort foam technology that is highly shock absorbent. The company explained that comfort and protection are further enhanced by a foam comfort layer for pressure release when working while kneeling. To complete the solution, an inner polyester fabric seals the outer protection layers onto the trouser leg to deliver a comfortable surface between the wearer’s knee and the kneepad itself. The whole thing is designed so that the energy created by the impact of working on your knees – or if you accidentally bang them when working – is dissipated. Nicole Rimér, Head of Innovation at Snickers Workwear explained: “We have set

out to solve a common frustration for workers who are constantly moving around; standing up and kneeling down. Now thanks to our ground-breaking Capsulized™ kneepads, they can get all the comfort and freedom of movement they want and still have the practical knee protection they need.”

Sizing guide The company points out that it is important to select the right trousers size as that determines kneepad placement, which can be done by checking out the Snickers Workwear sizing guide. For tradespeople who are up and down all day these trousers could be a great solution. They are also a demonstration of how Snickers Workwear continues to bring innovative products to the workwear market after almost 50 years. For more details please www.rdr.link/pbb021

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Let’s talk

TOOLS...

From pressing to drain cleaning and a lot more besides, RIDGID products are designed to ensure installers can work efficiently and effectively. PHPI caught up with Paul Morrow, Country Manager UK & Ireland, RIDGE Tool UK, to find out more about the company’s solutions and the support it can provide to busy plumbers.

Q

With many plumbers working alone or as part of a small team, support from product manufacturers can be a lifeline – especially when out on a job and something goes awry. What kind of support is available from RIDGID? One of the most important things is to use the best tool solution for the job. Not the one with the most features, not the most or least expensive, but the best tool for the job. The range of products available for plumbers is vast and selection of the most appropriate tool can sometimes involve many hours of research, which quite often plumbers don’t have the necessary time available to make a fully informed decision. This is where RIDGID can help. The sales team are an experienced group who have had all the difficult question asked in the past, from jobs all over the UK and Ireland. The RIDGID team can advise on the current best solution, considering the constant flow of new products entering the trade counters to make jobs quicker, cleaner and safer. The purchase of a RIDGID tool is just the beginning. You then become one of the proud owners of a quality tool which will last a lifetime. If, as does happen from time to time, you have trouble using our products, the sales team are available for technical support whenever you need them.

Q

Can plumbers register products to receive any enhanced benefits? Yes, there is a product registration section on RIDGID.eu/gb where every product can be registered. This creates a record of your purchase and activates a full Lifetime warranty. All RIDGID tools are warranted to be free of material and workmanship defects. Should your tool ever malfunction from defects in workmanship or materials, we will repair or replace the tool free of charge. By registering your product, you also will be kept up to date with the latest new products as they are launched, making you one of the first to know!

Q

The company has recently introduced a new press fitting tool, the RP 115 Micro. Can you tell us a bit more about it please?

44 MARCH 2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

The range of Press Tools has been strengthened again with the introduction of the RP 115 Micro-Pressing Tool for Cu pipes up to 28mm and plastic/ multilayer pipes up to 32mm. Especially focussed on the domestic plumber and designed in a compact housing, it allows you to reach into confined areas like under floorboards or into tight cupboards with ease. Powered by a 12v Li-Ion battery, press fittings can be made in three seconds, even if the pipe is wet. At just 1.3Kg it’s an easy one-handed operation. M & V jaws for Cu and U & TH jaws for plastic pipes are available for the compact tool. No naked flames make press the safest solution especially for loft areas or council owned jobs, and now the size of the tool has reduced, provides a real alternative to solder joints.

Q

Another area in which RIDGID is increasingly known is drain cleaning, notably the FlexShaft range of solutions. Are there any new solutions for plumbers to be aware of here? The Flexshaft has been revolutionary in cleaning blockages and general pipe maintenance to keep the water free-flowing

as if they were new. There are two established models K9-102 for 1-2” diameter pipes and K9-204 for 2-4” diameter pipes. Both work by attaching a battery drill to a central shaft (eliminating any remote power requirements or trailing leads). When the drill is operated, it spins an inner central cable which in turn spins a chain knocker which reaches wall-to-wall within the pipe. As its the inner core that’s moving, the outer sheath serves as a protective jacket, making sure you don’t cause any damage to white porcelain or traps. With a range of up to 15m, it provides a compact solution for solving many of the normal domestic blockages.

What’s new and very exciting if you’re a plumber is the launch of a mini Fleshaft version called K9-12. It operates the same way as it’s bigger brothers but is a fraction of the size. With 9m of cable and still handling 1-2” pipes, its perfect for soft blockages and pipe cleaning. It even protects itself with a built-in clutch – preventing any damage to the cable if a hard blockage is encountered. As the cable is contained within a sealed housing, there’s no drips to worry about as you carry it over your customers new cream carpet! At 3.8Kg and not much bigger than a laptop bag, it’s an exciting new product launch.

Q

How can a plumber see these products in action. Does RIDGID provide any demonstrations, have a demo van or attend any trade shows?

If you want to see the RIDGID products in action there’s a few ways you can experience it. The RIDGID YouTube channel is a great resource with videos

showing the main features and time saving tricks and tips. Were also on social media Instagram Facebook & LinkedIn where we post and also re-post end users authentic video content. We have demonstration vehicles which we set up outside trade counters where you can discuss your requirements with our friendly sales team, try the products hands-on and get some real technical advice. We’ll be showing the range including the new K9-12 at the TOOLFAIR/ HAPS show in Bolton on 21st-22nd March - be sure to pay us a visit and see how we can help you become even more effective. CUT IT OUT M

akita has added two cordless jigsaws to its portfolio – the 40VMax XGT JV001G Top Handle Brushless Jigsaw and the 40VMax XGT JV002G Barrel Handle Brushless Jigsaw. The new models are the first jigsaws to join the manufacturer’s XGT battery platform. Both models feature the company’s brushless motor technology designed to deliver constant speed control to manage the demands of tough cuts as well as pieces that require fine precision and control. Each

provides up to 266mm stroke length. The company says the jigsaws can cut up to 135mm thickness in wood, 10mm in steel and 20mm thickness in aluminium. The variable speed control dial and three orbital settings means users can match the appropriate speed to the application they are working on, choosing between 800 and 3,500 strokes per minute for the JV001G and between 0 and 3,500 strokes per minute for the JV002G.

This is our most compact and comfortable cordless jigsaw to date

Dust extraction Both models feature toolless blade change and the dust extraction port can be attached on either side of the foot, to minimise obstruction depending on the direction of work. Both also include twin LED lights with pre-glow and afterglow functions.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK commented: “We are delighted to introduce the first jigsaw into our XGT portfolio. This is our most compact and comfortable cordless jigsaw to date, as well as our most efficient when compared to any of our other AC and DC jigsaws to date.” For more information please www.rdr.link/pbb023

RHINO PRODUCTS LAUNCHES

NEW KAMMRACK BLACK R

hino Products is releasing a new version of its roof rack – the KammRack Black. The new black rack, which is available to buy from February, is the successor to the company’s well known Modular Rack, which will be retired from its product range later this year. As part of the launch for KammRack Black, Rhino is working in partnership with the rhino sanctuary Care for Wild – a charity based in South Africa that rescues, rehabilitates, and rewilds orphaned and injured rhinos. A percentage of sales of the new rack will be donated to the charity. The KammRack Black benefits from all the features of the original silver version, the new rack is enveloped in a sleek, black, powder coated finish, designed to further complement modern commercial vehicles. It features matching black nose cones and anti-rattle connectors.

Keep fit The company says KammRack Black is also one of the fastest fitting roof racks on the market. Building upon the ‘Kamm Generation’, comprising of the KammBar Pro, KammBar Fleet, and the original KammRack, the KammRack Black utilises the same pre-assembled legs as the rest of the range. The company says that this, combined with the click together side frames, click in crosstubes and roller, means the rack can be fitted rapidly and by just one person.

PRODUCT FOCUS

A TOP-DOWN APPROACH

Top-Fix is a new solution for fitting wastes from above.

F

itting a shower or sink waste can be one of the slightly awkward jobs, with plumbers often needing to simultaneously coordinate what is going on both above and below the sink or shower in order to fit the waste. Designed to make the task easier, Mark Vitow Ltd has introduced Top-Fix – a solution that means the waste can be fitted from above.

Drop in from above A two-piece solution, which is ‘dropped-in’ through the waste hole from above, means no parts need to be held in place from below the sink or shower. Once in place, the two main pieces of Top-Fix are then tightened with a bolt, pulling them together and creating a seal. The 14mm bolt which runs through the center of the unit can be tightened using either a ‘key’ (which is supplied in the box) or with a drill with a 14mm socket set. If the installer is using a drill, the company recommends the use of a low setting to make sure the threads of the bolt are protected.

Pull together The action of tightening the bolt draws the two parts of Top-Fix together, with the bottom pulled back against the underside of the sink or shower. This creates a seal which the company says is ‘100% watertight’. It says that there is no need for any sealant – which can help make the job less messy and allow plumbers to keep the work area clean and tidy. The solution has been engineered to work with all UK plumbing systems, both older sinks and showers and modern ones. Installer Andy Cam has been trying out Top-Fix and said: “The Top-Fix solution requires no washers and no silicone making it a lot cleaner and a lot quicker to fit. You fit it from above, tighten up the screw and its done.” Top-Fix is being brought to the market by Mark Vitow Ltd, the company’s Commercial Director, James Cranham, said: “Top-Fix represents a simple solution to an awkward problem – making an everyday plumbing product easier and quicker to install, saving the installer time, money and effort. The fully patented technology means a hassle free and leak free installation, meaning no costly call backs.”

48 MARCH 2024 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

James concluded: “The products themselves have been in design and development for several years and engineered to the highest of standards. The result is one of the simplest yet most impressive innovations that I’ve seen in the industry.” Mark Vitow Ltd is the official distributor of Top-Fix. For more information www.rdr.link/pbb026

Bristan, is boosting its kitchen tap product line up with a host of new and updated product options on offer for 2024. New options include upgrades to the company’s Easyfit range, plus new Pull Out taps and technology enabled enhancements. Adding to the existing product line up for 2024 will be five new designs — Acorn, Fern, Maple, Spruce and Spine, together with new finishes to existing products – Renaissance, Raspberry, Monza, Echo & Cashew. It means in total the Easyfit Kitchen Tap collection now features 20 product styles in a range of finishes including Bristan’s signature Chrome, Stainless Steel, Black, Brushed Brass, Gun Metal and Brushed Nickel. In the company’s Pull Out kitchen tap range, new for 2024 is the addition of five new designs – Axia, Jule, Sabre, Silhouette and Profile, taking the range line up to nine product options. One benefit for 2024 will be the introduction of Bristan’s Eco Start and Thermaclick technology which features in selective products. The Eco Start feature, available in Maple, Spruce and Pine Easyfit taps and Axia, Jule and Sabre Pull Out kitchen taps, saves energy by ensuring cold water is set as the default central start position of the tap handle, meaning that hot water is only activated when the tap lever is moved from the central position and reduces unnecessary demand on hot water heating systems and energy usage. The Thermaclick feature, available in Maple, Spruce and Pine Easyfit taps, provides enhanced safety feature through the addition of a mid-point click that indicates when the water has reached the optimal temperature for washing your hands.

Snickers Workwear has introduced a new range of lightweight Mid-layers which the company says has been crafted for full flexibility on site and optimal comfort. Mid-layers are flexible and can be worn as an outer layer when it’s warmer or a mid-layer when it’s a bit cooler. The new Kingspan Titan ESLP1200 Compact oil tank has been designed to fit into small spaces and is the latest addition to the brand’s EcoSafe bunded oil tank range. It has a low-profile design and is made from polyethylene, which the company says will mean it is well-suited to exposed sites, persistent strong winds, temperature fluctuations, and/or high levels of UV radiation. It has a small footprint – 1200 x 1800mm – and is designed to fit on 12 concrete slabs (600mm x 600mm), which could cut the time needed by an installer to lay a slab base. The ESLP1200 Compact comes with a bottom outlet as standard while top outlet versions are available on request. Channels moulded into each side of the tank are designed to contain any top outlet pipework.

As part of a programme designed to provide radiators to operate well with renewable heating systems Stelrad launched a range of 900mm high radiators in a variety of widths in early 2023. The company says that as a result of the popularity of the new 900mm high radiators it will add the models to the Vita, Softline and Henrad ranges in the Stelrad Group portfolio as well from Q1 2024. Head of Marketing Chris Harvey said: “There is a clear need for larger size radiators to cope with the lower circulating system temperatures generated by renewable heating systems.”
