A rewarding experience
As consumers, we are all familiar with customer loyalty programmes. From supermarkets to mobile coffee vans, businesses across the country are looking to give something more to their customers, and in the process keep them loyal.
Most plumbers and heating engineers will already be familiar with some of the rewards schemes which companies operate in the sector, and over the last year or so there has been a real uptick in the number of companies introducing them. Visitors to the recent InstallerSHOW in Birmingham in June would have seen many companies launching new schemes or promoting their existing customer loyalty programmes.
In this issue we have details of a number of new programmes recently launched or updated. Please turn to the News pages for more details.
From a manufacturer’s perspective these schemes help to improve customer retention, engage more closely with customers and build stronger relationships. In turn, depending on the type of loyalty programme being operated, customers might receive discounts on future purchases, rewards, or ‘points’ based on levels of spend – to be redeemed against a wide variety of items such as merchandise, consumer goods, holidays etc... Other schemes may offer membership of different tiered ‘groups’ within a company’s programme (which themselves have different levels of benefits), or simply cashback.
Savvy installers, keeping across a wide number of customer loyalty programmes, could now accumulate a significant level of benefit. However, with so many options around it could become an increasingly large admin burden just keeping up-to-speed with them all, what to do to ‘earn’ the rewards, and how to redeem them.
Another benefit which manufacturers often attribute to loyalty programmes is that they provide a point of differentiation with competitor brands, but with so many companies offering these schemes that increasingly appears to be less of a driving factor.
With an increasing number of organisations willing to go the extra mile to retain and engage with installers, it remains clear that plumbers and heating engineers are still, rightly, at the heart of the sector.

BRITISHGASOFFER FOR MIXERGY CUSTOMERS
Mixergy has announced an exclusive offer from British Gas. Mixergy customers who sign up for a British Gas fixed-rate tariff will save a further £40 a year when they opt in to Mixergy Extra. The £40 rebate will be deducted by British Gas from the energy bill.
Pete Armstrong, CEO of Mixergy, explained: “We have been working with British Gas to explore how hot water cylinders can support our power grid infrastructure, by alleviating grid congestions as more renewables are installed on an already overloaded grid. Imagine if every hot water cylinder in the UK worked just like a battery and was connected to the grid so you could charge when power was cheapest and cleanest? This could free up a phenomenal amount of room to onboard more renewables. Instead of paying windfarms to switch off, we could pay homeowners to switch on. This is why we’re thrilled British Gas has chosen to be the first utility to offer Mixergy Extra. The first smart hot water cylinder energy offer which pays homeowners.”
The British Gas Mixergy Extra offer will be available in September 2024.

Business Matters
PART 6: MARKETING TACTICS FOR THE TRADE
James Chillman, UK Country Manager for Fergus, gives PHPI readers five key marketing tips for their business.
Whether you’re working solo, or own a company with staff, getting new customers is a huge driver when it comes to the success of your business. So, what can you do to drive more business your way?
Establish a strong online presence
In 2024, a professional website is your business card. So don’t give off the wrong impression. Instead, ensure your site is user-friendly, mobile-responsive, and updated with your services, contact information, and customer testimonials.
Leverage Google search
While on the topic of your website, consider optimising it for local search terms. When somebody Google’s ‘plumber in [Your Area]’, you want your business website to be as high up in the search results as possible. That’s where SEO (or ‘search engine optimisation') comes in. Include location-based keywords in the text on your website, like “Plumber in Manchester” and make sure your register with Google My Business.
Use social media
Social media can be a powerful tool for building your brand over a sustained period of time. You could share engaging content such as educational posts, time-lapse videos of your work and before and after pictures. It’s your chance to get creative, have fun and show off your good work on the tools.
Offer Referral Incentives
Word-of-mouth is powerful, but a lot of tradespeople just sit back and hope this happens naturally. Kickstart word-of-mouth referrals by encouraging your satisfied customers to refer friends and family by offering discounts or service upgrades.
Partner with local businesses
If you have an offer ready to go, who better to spread the word than your contacts in other trades? Networking is something you should always be doing to expand your reach and grow your business. Attend trade shows, wear a smile, and chat with as many people in the trades as you can. 1 2 3 4 5

Building a successful plumbing business–ADVICEFOR COLLEGELEAVERS
How does a student leaving college start up their own successful plumbing business? We asked professional plumber, entrepreneur, and inventor of the hotun dry trap tundish, Russell Armstrong, for his advice.
QWhat was your path into the industry?
I left school at 16 with 5 ‘O levels one of which was for technical drafting. I joined a ductwork manufacturer on the drawing board and went to St Albans College of Building to get my ONC in HVAC Design Engineering. I then joined a Building Services Design Consultancy, Oscar Faber and did an HNC in the same subject, whilst doing my design apprenticeship.
After a few years I was drawn to sales and joined a great company in the ventilation market called Nuaire selling ventilation equipment to specification and contractors. My life in sales was great but I really wanted to work for myself and so I started my own kitchen and bathroom installation company called Integrated Interiors.
Following a move from Nottingham to Derby, I then morphed my business into a small and minor repair service catering for local people.
QWhat advice would you give to a newly trained plumber wanting to start out?
If you are a college leaver, you should be armed with the skills to do basic wet plumbing works (change a tap, fix a toilet etc...) but most people go into college to become Gas Engineers. They then find an issue. As a trainee Gas engineer, you then need to work to produce your “portfolio” of gas works but many can’t find a company to employ them, so they get kind of stuck.
It is my contention that any college leaver with a good amount of common sense, plumbing skills and a good work ethic can start out in the trade as a ‘Wet Plumber’.
It is vital that to remain credible with your customers that you only do work within your own competence, but you learn to do that work really well.
QWhat do you mean by ‘within your own competence’?
Plumbing is a craft, there is a skill to it that has a level of diagnosis, repair and knowing what to do if things are not right. Being a plumber, for me, is more about knowing what to do if things need repairing rather than doing the work. Now that sounds contradictory, but what I mean is that I can change a tap in 15-30 minutes but what happens if you are faced with a tap that has been completely concealed? Nothing beats experience, and
experience can’t be bought, so the college leaver must carefully build up their experience bit by bit. So only do the jobs that you know you can do and don’t bite off more than you can chew. That’s what I mean by ‘your own competence’.
The college leaver needs to decide whether they want to be employed with the security that brings, or whether they want to be self-employed. That means being a businessperson and taking some balanced and considered risks. Either way you need to be able to work on your own, even if you are employed.
To further enhance confidence in your potential customer base it is important to have some accreditation, such as Water Safe, WIAPS, CIPHE or APHC. These bodies allow you to gain an approval having made an application to them and undergoing an application process to determine your bona fides. It is always helpful to be both Water Regulation and perhaps G3 accredited (to work on/service unvented water heaters). In any case all of this is all part of your journey to excellence in the plumbing industry.
Russell was a designer and then a kitchen and bathroom fitter. When he moved to a new area of the country, he decided to start a new business as a wet plumber.
QHow did you go about this?
I decided that with my new location I would morph my kitchen and bathroom business into a minor works and repairs business. I needed to quickly find new customers and to inspire confidence from the get-go.
To generate enquiries, I decided to produce a post card at a thickness of 300gsm to advertise my services.
To have the best effect the card should show all your company name or your name if self-employed, relevant qualifications and accreditations, your prices (for small jobs I showed my first half hour charge plus a slightly lower second half hour charge) and the types of jobs that you are confident of doing.
To further enhance confidence in your potential customer base it is important to have some accreditation
The cliché of ‘no job too small’ is one to be avoided (in my opinion) but saying that you specialise in only doing small jobs (I call this ‘fixing taps and bogs’, with a smile on my face) is the better way of promoting yourself. Also include your full contact details (phone number and email) and the area you cover.
I then delivered the cards door-to-door, carefully recording which area I delivered to and when. Because I kept records, I was quickly able to learn that for 1,000 delivered cards, I was receiving jobs amounting to £1,000 (at that time, I was charging £40 for the first half hour and £30 for any subsequent half hour period).
It is important what you put on your card. People want to know exactly what you will charge and that there will be no surprises. You can quote your professional membership and/or print the logo of a local approval body by which you are approved.
In the next issue we will hear more about how Russell interacts with his customers and how he came to invent the hotun dry trap tundish.
BATTERY
power
As more and more people are looking at ways to reduce their energy costs Advance Appliances discusses the benefits of using a cylinder as a battery.
QCan I use a cylinder as a battery?
The simple answer here is yes, cylinders can hold and store thermal energy for use later on and studies show that around 9Gw of power can be stored in cylinders up and down the UK today. The question which often comes after this is how can I use that stored energy?
Well on the market today you have many types of hot water cylinders and buffer tanks which all offer different outputs; However most often overlooked is a Thermal Store Cylinder. A Thermal Store Cylinder can store energy which can be used to generate mains pressure domestic hot water and provide heat to either conventional radiators or underfloor heating. In addition, you can fit solar panels and purchase low-cost energy at convenient times to be used later that day for hot water and or space heating.
QHow Does a Thermal Store Work?
A Thermal Store works in reverse when compared to a conventional hot water cylinder, by heating the store of water you take the energy out of the cylinder to heat instantaneous hot water for taps, showers and baths. Then depending on the design of the system you either utilise the body of water for the wet
central heating system and create an open vented heating system (referred to as a direct cylinder) or you have a second coil within the cylinder which will create a sealed heating system (referred to as an Indirect cylinder).
With either model you have an Immersion Heater fitted which can be connected to a solar PV divertor to utilise self-generated power or to take advantage of a low-cost tariff.
QWhat Heat Sources can be put into a Thermal Store?
Thermal Store Cylinders are very versatile with a large range of options available when it comes to heat sources it is almost anything goes. When advising on the correct Thermal Store for a property always start with the main heat source, this is the primary heat source you will look to use and from there you can decide on the best option available to give you the most efficient system.
The range has products available which will work with natural gas, oil and electric. In addition to this you can utilise self-generated power such as solar PV, solar thermal, biomass boilers and even back boilers on stoves or fires. With a Hetas approved Multifuel Thermal Store you can enjoy mains pressure hot water and a sealed heating system heated primarily by a log burner.
QHow to determine if a Thermal Store will be suitable for a home?
A Thermal Store Cylinder is one of the easiest cylinders to install pretty much anywhere and in any property and still give mains pressure Hot Water for comfort. With the ability to accept almost any heat source they can provide heating, hot water or even both into almost any property. Without requirements for control valves, tundishes and external piping a Thermal Store can give the comfort of a mains pressure cylinder without the installation hassle.
Models which incorporate an electronic fail safe so that over filling or flooding are protected without the need for an external overflow are available. This means that in high rise buildings of multiple occupancy a Thermal Store is the perfect option for mains pressure hot water.

QWhat are the main benefits of a concealed cistern?
There are several, but the main benefits are both aesthetics and convenience. When it comes to bathroom design, customers now expect contemporary functions and increasingly, space-saving solutions.
Concealed cisterns offer a sleek and modern aesthetic solution for bathrooms, eliminating the bulky appearance of traditional exposed tanks. With their hidden installation behind the wall or within furniture, these cisterns free up valuable floor space or create a handy shelf space above the pan, creating a more open and spacious ambiance.
By cleverly concealing the cistern, when coupled with a wall-hung toilet – this installation system significantly reduces the outward projection of the fixtures, allowing for a more streamlined and unobtrusive design. In situations where maximising space is important, opting for wall-hung ceramics alongside pre-wall installation frames with concealed cisterns can make a real difference. The ability to seamlessly conceal the cistern and elevate the toilet's footprint off the floor creates an instant illusion of spaciousness, transforming even the smallest of bathrooms into more open and visually appealing spaces.
CONCEALED CISTERNS
Andrew Shankster, Training Manager at Geberit, speaks with PHPI about the benefits of concealed cisterns and offers some installation tips.
From a hygiene perspective, pre-wall installation systems with integrated concealed cistern and wall-hung toilet offer significant benefits. The absence of a visible cistern and the elevation of the toilet bowl make cleaning much easier and more thorough. There are fewer nooks and crannies where dust and grime can accumulate, and the space underneath the toilet is easily accessible for mopping.
Another advantage of many concealed cistern with pre wall installation systems is the ability to adjust the height of the toilet bowl during installation. This feature allows for customisation to suit users of different heights or physical needs, enhancing comfort and accessibility. The adjustable height can be particularly beneficial when flooring is installed after the bathroom fittings – allowing more flexibility for the tile depth and adhesive across the floor space as the WC can be raised to accommodate this.
Q Many bathrooms and ensuites are tight on space. Can a concealed WC help create more space in these rooms?
Yes. Unlike traditional exposed toilet cisterns that sit in front of the wall and on top of the WC pan taking up valuable floor space, concealed WC cisterns are designed to be completely hidden behind a wall or within furniture. This not only eliminates the visual bulk of the cistern but also frees up floor area that would otherwise be occupied by the exposed tank. By reclaiming this space, homeowners and designers can more efficiently utilise the available square footage, potentially allowing for a larger shower or vanity area, creating a shelf above the toilet pan or simply creating a more open and airier feel.
They allow greater design freedom, with the ability to specify wall-hung and back to wall pans and feature continuous, uninterrupted tiling. They also allow freedom to blend in or contrast with the design of the rest of the room.
Q Can you share any tips to help ensure the installation of a pre wall frame with integrated concealed cistern goes smoothly?
Before fitting your pre-wall installation frame with integrated concealed cistern, such as the Geberit Duofix, it’s worth considering the following;
l Which frame do you require? If installing understairs or beneath a window, you
may want to consider the height of the installation frame itself. Geberit Duofix frames with integrated concealed cisterns come in wide range of heights and depths to allow for many applications from as low as 82cm and as thin as 8cm. Always consider the floor depth too at this stage as this may need to be considered with the height of the frame itself.
l What am I fixing the frame to? Is the wall strong enough to hold the weight of the installation itself and the future user of the WC? We recommend using a C channel metal stud, timber stud or Geberit system rail to ensure a strong installation that will withstand the weight of the pan and the person sitting on it. When installed correctly, a Geberit wall-hung installation frame and WC pan will hold up to 400kg of weight.
manual push buttons to sleek touch-free infrared sensors and robust pneumatic actuators perfect for wet environments.
We also take aesthetics seriously, providing an extensive selection of flush plates in different materials, colours, and finishes to complement any bathroom design. Many models incorporate additional water-saving features and adjustable flush volumes for the eco-conscious consumer.
Finally, if in further doubt, Geberit offers a wide range of training and fitting support tools to help with installation of frames with integrated cisterns.
Q Once concealed, how easy is it to access the behind the wall elements in case any maintenance is required?
For those prioritising hygiene, certain systems boast odor extraction or hygiene flush capabilities. Geberit hasn't forgotten about accessibility either, offering solutions with large, easy-to-use buttons for those with special requirements, for example care homes.
QDo you have any tips for installers on how they can communicate effectively with customers on bathroom options?
l Waste connections. The ability to install within an existing wall versus creating a pre-wall is determined by the existing wall build up and the waste position within the bathroom. For an existing wall installers need to ensure there is enough space for the frame and concealed cistern and for the waste connection itself, allowing for adequate fall. Building a pre-wall is also a good option – as installers can utilise the space above the frame with inset shelving or storage to maximise space within the bathroom.
l Avoiding movement. Wall build up is critical, and for Geberit Duofix wall-hung installations, we recommend using two sheets of plasterboard or 18mm ply board in front of the frame before installing the WC. This prevents any movement or deflection of the pan and Installers can tile over this as normal.
l Future maintenance and access? Don't forget to plan for future maintenance by incorporating an easily removable flush plate. The flush plate is the only external thing that can be seen once a concealed cistern has been installed. Geberit offers a selection of simple to install solutions from the Geberit Kappa, Geberit Sigma and Geberit Omega ranges.
Access to concealed toilet system components varies depending on the design, but modern systems are generally engineered with maintenance in mind. Most feature a removable flush plate that serves as an access point to the cistern and internal mechanisms. This allows for easy reach to address common issues like adjusting the flush volume or replacing the flush valve.
It's important to note that major repairs or replacements could still require some deconstruction of the surrounding structure. This is why proper initial installation and using quality components is crucial.
When planning your installation, consider discussing accessibility options with the system manufacturer. They may be able to recommend designs or installation methods that optimise both aesthetics and future serviceability.
Q Do concealed WCs come with a variety of flushing options?
Geberit's concealed WC systems offer a diverse array of flushing options to suit various needs and preferences. At the heart of most systems is our water-saving dual-flush technology, giving users the choice between a full or reduced flush volume. The flush activation methods are equally versatile, ranging from classic
Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful bathroom renovations, and installers can greatly enhance their customer interactions with a few key strategies. Start by actively listening and asking thoughtful questions to truly understand your client's vision, needs, and budget constraints. Leverage visual aids like brochures or digital tools to bring options to life, making it easier for customers to envision the end result.
When explaining technical aspects, ditch the jargon and opt for clear, relatable language, using analogies to demystify complex concepts. Present a balanced view of each option, outlining both benefits and potential drawbacks to showcase your expertise and foster informed decision-making.
Transparency is crucial, so provide detailed cost breakdowns and clearly explain how choices impact the budget. Set realistic expectations by discussing the installation timeline and potential disruptions upfront. Anticipate and address common concerns proactively, and always have alternative solutions ready if a customer's first choice isn't viable.
After discussions, follow up with a written summary to prevent misunderstandings.

HOTWATER CYLINDERS POWERING THE FUTUREOF HEATING
Raman Sohal, Product Manager for Residential & Commercial Cylinders at Baxi, explains how installers can raise the profile of hot water cylinders and ensure their customers’ cylinders continue to provide an efficient and reliable source of hot water.
It would be fair to say that hot water cylinders have taken a back seat over the years with the rising popularity of combi boilers. Consequently, fewer households have depended on cylinders as a component of their heating system and may either have forgotten or be completely unaware of their benefits.
But as heat pump demand continues to rise, cylinders are making a return as part of low-carbon heating solutions. This presents installers with a valuable opportunity to raise the profile of hot water cylinders and educate their customers on the benefits of the products.
The attributes of hot water cylinders are straightforward and easy for installers to explain to their customers – especially when armed with relevant data and insight.
Simply put, the cylinders play a vital role in larger properties predominately by ensuring a consistently powerful flow rate is provided to hot water outlets while supplying a standby provision of hot water.
So, when it comes to choosing a hot water cylinder, which factors do installers need to consider and how can this determine product choice?
Flow and recovery performance
Homeowners may benefit from understanding the factors that influence an installer’s choice of cylinder size for their property, especially when considering the current cost-of-living crisis. By equipping themselves with basic data, installers can offer the most suitable advice during property visits. This includes information
such as the number of occupants, showers, and baths, as well as the likelihood of simultaneous usage. The Megaflo Eco 2 and Baxi cylinders, ranging from 70 to 300 litres, offer solutions for every installation.
Using this data in real-life situations can help installers communicate technical information effectively. For instance, an explanation of the hot water delivery rate in litres per minute and how this translates to the performance of a shower or the time to fill a bath can be particularly useful. A Baxi Indirect Cylinder, for example, can achieve a flow rate of up to 76 litres per minute, which is significant when a lower rate of just 22 litres per minute can fill a standard bath with hot water in just under five minutes.
For homes with high and frequent hot water demand, recovery times are a crucial consideration, which highlight the importance of the heat exchanger's quality within the cylinder. Cylinders like the Megaflo Eco2 or Baxi Indirect Cylinder, are equipped with high-performance coil-in-coil heat exchangers, offer impressive recovery times. For instance, a 125-litre Megaflo Eco cylinder can recover 70% of its volume in just 30 minutes.
The insulation level of a hot water cylinder is another crucial factor for installers to consider, as it directly impacts efficiency and energy bills. By reminding customers that their hot water cylinder is retaining heat effectively throughout the day, installers can help them save energy and provide peace of mind.
Exploring electric
It’s certainly no secret that heat pump technology has grown to the fore as one of the most effective ways to decarbonise most properties. This in turn further emphasises the important role of the cylinder within a system. Any homeowner looking to make
that transition from boiler to heat pump will need a way to store hot water for when they need it. This means they too will need to be made aware of just how key a well-designed air source heat pump cylinder is to their hot water performance.
While the baseline performance of the cylinder will always prove critical, the energy infrastructure of the home itself is growing in importance too. Trends show a rise in the number of homeowners wanting to be more environmentally friendly, save energy and increase their own energy security. This is where a combination of electrical solutions can really come into its own. In these instances, the use of solar pv panels in conjunction with a solar PV cylinder can minimise the need to draw electricity from the grid at peak times, thus contributing to lower running costs.
Championing servicing
It is crucial to emphasise the significance of regular servicing for hot water cylinders, just like with other heating solutions. This ensures safety and optimal performance. While boiler servicing is frequently promoted, it is equally important to remind homeowners about the need to service unvented cylinders too.
By maintaining a diligent approach to servicing, the risk of unexpected repair
costs is minimised, and the cylinder remains safe for use. Like boilers, the longevity of a hot water cylinder and its warranty are often tied to regular servicing. Despite the misconception that servicing a cylinder is simple, regular maintenance as part of a service ensures safety measures are in place, providing peace of mind for customers while operating efficiently.
The three tiers of safety – control stat, T&P valve, and energy cut out – are crucial for maintaining high levels of performance and user safety. A basic servicing checklist includes inspection, strainer cleaning, descaling, expansion volume recharge, and re-commissioning. While the installation document contains detailed servicing instructions, discussing the importance of servicing with homeowners encourages regular maintenance.
Installers are now more than ever, viewed as trusted advisors for heating queries, offering guidance on energy consumption and other opportunities to maximise a system’s performance. This makes now the perfect time to raise the profile of hot water cylinders as a holistic answer to many homeowner heating quandaries.

WALL PANELS ADVICE& GUIDANCE
It would be fair to say that meeting the needs of the homeowner when it comes to domestic refurbishment projects has never been more challenging. Not only do many customers wish for a luxury aesthetic on a budget –they also want to ensure their home is as easy as possible to maintain.
With all of this said, it’s no wonder that interest in products that are affordable to buy, quick to install and simple to maintain is on the rise. That’s certainly been the case with bathroom wall panels, which have seen a 45% rise in searches over the last 12 months compared to the previous year. And installers keen to familiarise themselves with the product category are certainly not alone either – there’s been a 50% increase in searches for ‘bathroom wall panel installation’ over the last year too.
It's therefore safe to say that the era when tiles were considered the only viable option for bathroom surfaces is steadily coming to an end. So, what exactly do installers need to know about bathroom panels in order to offer them as a viable option to customers?
Arguably the most important point is that not all bathroom panels are equal. There are numerous factors to consider when selecting which will be the best match for a specific bathroom project’s needs.
The fit
One of the main strengths of this particular category is how straightforward it is for bathroom wall panels to be installed, but there are some nuances between products.
As a rule of thumb it’s a case of dry measuring first, followed by cutting the panels and required profiles to size. Then look to apply a suitable high strength adhesive to the back of each panel, before affixing to the pre-prepped walls. To complete the installation, use a colour matched sealant as required to create a watertight finish.
The profile
Square edge panels with a tongue and groove edge also need to be fitted using profiles for internal and external corners, plus bottom seals and end cap trims; but they don't require joining profiles.
A growing number of homeowners are looking at how they can renovate their bathrooms within time and budget constraints. As a result, installers are frequently being challenged to find solutions which are quick to fit and simple to maintain without compromising the desired aesthetic. Bekki Griffiths, Senior Marketing Communications Manager at Mermaid Panels, a Wilsonart Company, profiles the different types of panel available and the types of project each lends itself to.
Profiles come in a choice of finishes, including chrome, brushed silver, matt black and white, to ensure that all-important cohesive finish.
If there’s a requirement to minimise the use of profiles or even avoid them altogether, then Mermaid’s Elite collection has a sleek postformed edge and tongue and groove jointing. It also boasts a 100% waterproof core and a lifetime guarantee.
The main thing to pay close attention to is the importance of installing using a professional grade, high-strength waterproof adhesive and sealant.
The tools
The beauty of most modern bathroom wall panels is that there’s generally no need for any specialist tools or vast technical experience. The main thing to pay close attention to is the importance of installing using a professional grade, high-strength waterproof adhesive and sealant. Not only will this ensure a quality finish, but it’s also likely to be a requirement of any manufacturer’s product guarantee too.
The décor
Long gone are the days when design possibilities were constrained by the limited decors available. Manufacturers like Mermaid Panels offer a wide choice of solid colour and trend-led decors, across a range of different panel types. It’s also possible to mimic natural marbles, stones and woods – not only in appearance but in texture too.
It's important not to forget that while tiles may be time-consuming to install and challenging to maintain at times, they do provide a traditional look which appeals to many homeowners. For that reason, it’s also possible to choose panels that imitate a tile effect but can deliver a bathroom refresh a lot quicker than the real thing, as they're completely grout-free.
The compatibility
When refurbishing a bathroom, many homeowners will be looking to achieve a cohesive look throughout, so it’s worth knowing that some of the latest ranges on the market also offer coordinating splashbacks and vanity worktops.
With such a wide variety of styles readily available, installers should maximise on the opportunity bathroom wall panels present.

NAIL THEDETAIL
When tackling a new heating system installation, it's more than just fitting a boiler or heating system – the devil is, always, in the detail. From ensuring that no drafts sneak through to meticulously adhering to the latest energy efficiency standards and fitting sleek and secure pipework, every element matters.
Air leakage around pipework where it enters and exits a property is a big issue. When installing pipes or boiler flue systems, drilled holes in walls and floors can create gaps that allow heated air to escape and cold air to enter, increasing heating demand and energy use.
To address this, Part L of the Building Regulations mandates the use of pipe seals and grommets to minimise air leakage. New housing projects must now also provide the SAP Assessor with photos for the Buildings Regulations England Part L (BREL) report, demonstrating compliance with energy efficiency standards, particularly in insulation and airtightness.
Professional finish
WATCH
PipeSnug and FlueSnug are all-in-one sealing collars designed to meet stringent regulatory standards. These devices can be quickly installed by any plumber or builder to effectively seal off pipe exits, block out drafts, deter pests and prevent precious heat from escaping. Unlike mortar and sealant, PipeSnug and FlueSnug are UV resistant and designed to withstand sun damage and they leave a tidy, professional finish –no messy sealants, mortar or air sealing tape needed.
To see a video of Chirag from CP Utility Solutions installing a FlueSnug please www.rdr.link/ pbg016
The products also tackle the pressing issue of falls from height which remain a cause of severe injuries and fatalities in the workplace. PipeSnug and FlueSnug are both flexible enough to be pushed through a core-drilled hole from the inside, and yet rigid enough to snap back into place, so there is no need for ladders or scaffolding, removing a health and safety risk if the boiler is being installed at height. When a flue needs servicing, FlueSnug can be removed, inspected and then replaced, all from the inside of the building.
Pipework
Clips are indispensable in any heating or pipework installation, and the choice of clip is critical. The EZ Joist Clip stands out for its side-on installation design, which boosts safety when working above head level. This side-nailing feature makes these clips quicker and more convenient alternatives to traditional nail-in clips that
Dean Heathfield, Commercial Director at Talon, explains why the right plumbing accessories are important for safe, efficient and sustainable heating systems.
require top access to joists. With the EZ Joist Clip, you simply attach it to the side of the joist and its built-in supportive ledge holds it steady while the pipe is secured. This is particularly handy when the pipe needs to be fixed in place after it has been positioned and its modular design allows for joining multiple clips together to accommodate extended runs or intricate setups. The clips interlock through a dovetail joint, ensuring consistent pipe spacing and delivering a clean, organised finish.
When completing a heating installation, attention should also be paid to the aesthetics of exposed pipes in areas like bathrooms and kitchens, where radiators
and towel rails are often focal points. While main fixtures typically attract the most notice, unfinished pipework can undermine the overall effect of an installation. Snappit offers a neat, quick solution for covering exposed radiator and towel rail pipes, instantly elevating the finish. Simple to
Talon adds Black Link Spacers to its range
Talon Manufacturing has launched a range of Black Link Spacers to its range of clips. Talon's Hinged Clips secure pipework to for effective, safe and visually appealing installations. Working alongside these Hinged Clips, Link Spacers are designed to maintain a uniform distance between pipes, resulting in an orderly and professional appearance.
“Pardon the pun, but Black Link Spacers literally are the missing link to the armoury that is the fantastic looking selection of clips from Talon,” says installer Robert ‘Pointy’ Clarke of PPH Services.
“We listen to our customers and it was time to launch a black Link Spacer range,” said Dean Heathfield, Commercial Director of Talon. “So many plumbing and heating engineers take pride in their pipework and want it to not only meet the regs and be safe, but also to look great.”

install, you just need to measure the exposed pipe, mark it on the Snappit, and cut the excess with a hacksaw. The Snappit then snaps into place with a satisfying click, finished with a collar to secure the clean, professional look of the installation and avoiding all the mess and hassle associated with painting pipework.
Cover up
Beyond the kitchen and bathroom, exposed pipework in other spaces can make a room seem incomplete, collect dust and detract from the overall design of the room. Talon’s Single and Double Pipe Covers offer a solution to smarten up the look of exposed pipes.
Made from extruded white uPVC, these covers offer excellent weather resistance, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Once the correct size is chosen, they can be clipped over Talon Hinged Clips without the need for any additional tools.

KNOWING THE FACTS Sealed Systems
Stephen Elsmore, Senior Technical Support at Altecnic, talks through some of the common questions and troubleshooting issues related to sealed systems.
QWhat are sealed systems for?
Sealed systems are designed for central heating and are widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. They are popular because they simplify installation by eliminating the need for feed and vent tanks in the system.
QWhat are the essential components of a sealed system kit?
The essential components of a sealed system kit include:
l Diaphragm expansion vessel (complying with BS EN 13831)
l Safety relief valve
l Pressure gauge
l Filling loop
QWhere should key components be installed?
l Safety Relief Valve: Should be fitted on or close to the boiler on the flow pipe.
l Pressure Gauge: Preferably close to the expansion vessel and/or the boiler, in a position that is easily readable from the filling point.
l Filling Point: Should be near key components, particularly the pressure gauge, and should be a temporary connection allowing filling from the water mains, incorporating a double check valve and isolating valves.
QWhat is the principle of operation of a sealed system?
In a sealed system, water cannot be compressed. When water heats up and expands, the increased volume is accommodated by the expansion vessel. The diaphragm inside the vessel is pushed by the expanded water, creating additional volume. When the water cools down, the pre-charge pressure forces the water back into the main system, maintaining constant pressure and reducing energy consumption.
Q What are the advantages of sealed systems?
The advantages of sealed systems include:
l System Flexibility: Components can be installed in various locations.
l Cost Savings: Reduced installation time lowers overall costs.
l No Feed and Expansion Tank: Eliminates issues like “pumping over” and the risk of freezing.
The expansion vessel should be connected to the system at a point close to the pump inlet to maintain positive pressures throughout the system
l Longer Life: Reduced corrosion problems extend the system's lifespan.
l Noise Reduction: Higher system pressure reduces or eliminates boiler noise.
l Low Maintenance Costs: Requires only periodic operational checks, making the system virtually maintenance-free.
Q What are the applicable standards for sealed systems?
Domestic sealed heating systems should comply with the following British Standards:
l BS 7074: Part 1: 1989 - Application, selection, and installation of expansion vessels and ancillary equipment for sealed water systems. Code of practice for domestic heating and hot water supply.
l BS 7074: Part 2: 1989 - Application, selection, and installation of expansion vessels and ancillary equipment for
Stephen Elsmore
sealed water systems. Low and Medium temperature hot water heating systems.
l BS EN 12828: 2003 - Heating systems in buildings. Design for water-based heating systems.
l BS EN 14336: 2004 - Heating systems in buildings. Installation and commissioning of water-based heating systems.
QHow should the size of the expansion vessel be determined?
The expansion vessel should have an acceptance volume sufficient to accommodate the volume change of the system water when heated from 10˚C up to full operational temperature or beyond under fault conditions.
Q Where should the expansion vessel be located in the system?
The expansion vessel should be connected to the system at a point close to the pump inlet to maintain positive pressures throughout the system.
Q What is included in the Altecnic Robokit Extra Sealed System Kit?
The Robokit Extra includes all essential components for a sealed system installation:
l Safety relief valve with pressure gauge and 15mm compression outlet connection
l Filling loop with braided hose
l Double check valve with integral ball isolating valve
l Isolating valve
l Pressure gauge
l Four-way manifold with tappings for direct system connection
l Wall mounting bracket for the expansion tank
For more information please www.rdr.link/pbg021
Troubleshooting
Q Why is my sealed system losing pressure?
Potential causes for a sealed system losing pressure include:
l A leak in the system, such as from radiators, pipes, or connections.
l Issues with the expansion vessel, such as a loss of air charge or a damaged diaphragm.
l Air trapped in the system that needs to be vented.
Q What should I do if the pressure gauge shows high pressure in my sealed system?
If the pressure gauge indicates high pressure:
l Check if the filling loop has been left open and is continually adding water to the system.
l Inspect the expansion vessel for proper air charge; it may need to be recharged or replaced.
l Verify that the pressure relief valve is functioning correctly and not blocked or faulty.
Q
What could cause the boiler to make unusual noises?
Unusual boiler noises can be caused by:
l Air trapped in the system, which can be released by bleeding the radiators and the system.
l Low water pressure, which may need to be adjusted.
l A failing pump or other mechanical issues within the boiler.
l Scale buildup within the boiler or heat exchanger.
Q Why is my expansion vessel not working correctly?
Issues with the expansion vessel can include:
l Loss of air charge in the vessel, which can be checked and recharged if necessary.
l A damaged or worn-out diaphragm, which may require the vessel to be replaced.
l Incorrect sizing of the expansion vessel for the system, which might necessitate installing a correctly sized vessel.
Q What should I do if the safety relief valve is discharging water?
If the safety relief valve is discharging water:
l Check the system pressure; it may be too high, requiring the system to be depressurised.
l Inspect the safety valve for dirt or debris that may be causing it to stick open.
l Ensure the expansion vessel is functioning properly, as an issue with the vessel can cause pressure fluctuations.
Q Why is my system not heating up properly?
Insufficient heating can be due to:
l Air trapped in the system, which can be resolved by bleeding radiators and the system.
l Incorrect system pressure, which should be checked and adjusted as necessary.
l Blockages or sludge buildup in the pipes or radiators, which might require a system flush.
l A faulty pump or other components that need inspection and potential replacement.

l If the gauge remains unresponsive, it may need to be replaced.
NEW H ybrid FROM INTERGAS
Intergas Heating Solutions has introduced the Xtend Hybrid Monobloc heating solution.
Building on its Xtend Split Hybrid, the new hybrid solution from Intergas merges the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability of a traditional boiler, designed to provide homeowners with a sustainable and efficient method to heat their homes and water.
The company says that the Xtend Hybrid has been designed to address the challenges presented by the UK's diverse range of home insulations: while heat pumps offer an eco-friendly heating solution, they can struggle to meet the demands of less insulated properties, particularly during the colder months.
The Xtend Hybrid, says Intergas, bridges this gap by utilising a high-efficiency boiler to assist the heat pump, ensuring homeowners enjoy uninterrupted comfort and hot water supply throughout the year.
Energy efficiency
The Xtend Hybrid system optimises energy use by switching between the heat pump and the boiler, depending on the temperature and insulation level of the property, ensuring comfort levels are maintained and the most energy-efficient combination of appliances are used.
The company says that this not only reduces the environmental impact but also significantly lowers energy bills, cutting gas consumption by up to 82.5%.
Sustainable living
Intergas says that the Xtend Hybrid system is not just an advancement in heating technology; it's a commitment to sustainable living and energy efficiency. It says: “Homeowners will benefit from lower energy costs and the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are contributing to a greener planet. Installers will
Installers will appreciate the ease of installation and the support provided

The Xtend system, featuring a boiler, an indoor unit, and a 5kW outdoor unit (ASHP), can be installed as a completely new installation with a combi or system boiler or retrofitted to an existing ErP combi or system boiler.

WILO LAUNCHES NEW HEATING CIRCULATION PUMP
Wilo UK has announced the addition of an entry-level central heating circulation pump to its PICO range. The Atmos PICO uses energy-efficient EC motor technology to work based on demand, unlike older fixed speed pumps that run continuously. This helps to combat the challenge of older, inefficient pumps costing customers more money through higher energy use.
The company says that the launch of the Atmos PICO coincides with homeowners, landlords and social housing maintenance teams starting to gear up for another busy heating season, where pump breakdowns are becoming increasingly common.
Compact design
The new pump also benefits from a compact design, which the company believes will make installation and commissioning in an average-sized family home a simple task.
A straightforward interface with three set speeds and an option to select variable differential pressure allows the pump to modulate to the requirements of the system, further ensuring efficiency and energy savings. The pump also benefits from auto-venting and auto-deblocking and can be forced to vent manually by powering the unit off and then back on.
Andy Thompson, National Sales Manager – Plumbing & Heating at Wilo UK, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Atmos PICO as the newest addition to our PICO family, which already includes the popular Yonos PICO and Stratos PICO pumps.
“Thanks to its unique technology and simple user interface, the Atmos PICO is the perfect entry-level product for family homes, particularly with heating season on the horizon. That being said, it can also be put into operation for air conditioning and cooling applications extremely quickly and easily.”

LOCTITE55 INTRODUCES NEWPACKAGING
The pipe sealing solution, LOCTITE® 55, is now available in a new dispenser.
The new pack – made with 70% recycled plastic – features several improvements which the company says will make applying the sealing cord easier and more convenient for users. An integrated lid prevents the cap from falling off or becoming lost, the sealant cord is dispensed with a new pre-tension to aid application and the top of the dispenser is now transparent, so users can see how much product is left.
While the packaging has undergone a revamp other reliable features remain, for example it retains the integrated cord cutter. Designed to replace PTFE tape, LOCTITE 55 is designed for the sealing of threaded metal and plastic pipes and fittings. It needs no cure time or special training and results in an immediate, full pressure seal.
The company says that as LOCTITE 55 does not shred, pipe joints can be readjusted to align pipe work, fittings and gauges, without fear of leakage, giving installers greater flexibility on installation and saves time for cleaning and resealing.
It is certified for gas and potable water applications. The product’s latest certification is to GASTEC QA Approval Requirements 214, enabling its use with hydrogen gas application. This complements existing NSF/ANSI, Standard 61, DVGW/KTW and WRAS approvals.
