Doesit pay to advertisesalary?

Searches online generate results awash with companies professing to be top-dog when it comes to finding the right candidates for vacancies. There are help guides, dos and don’ts, interview techniques, videos, textbooks, blogs – my goodness, the advice spills over page-after-page in trying to find the best people for roles – but doesn’t the search start before you publish the advert onto your company website, social media, newspaper, or via a recruitment agent?

If you have a LinkedIn profile, you’ll know it can sometimes feel like transfer deadline day! There are breaking news announcements, approval in the shape of ‘likes’ and congratulatory messages in the comments section. The social media giant itself creates its own content to help “find your next job on LinkedIn”.

Frequently, I see factors and suppliers advertising jobs on the platform. I don’t know what the success rate is for posting the specifications on social media in comparison to the other means; however, I’ve been keeping an eye on whether any adverts online specify the salary range after I received a press release from Glen Callum Associates (GCA).

To advertise or not advertise a salary? That is the question that the recruitment specialist attempted to answer after it claimed many employers have a “slight uncertainty” around salary transparency.

GCA advised that by leaving out a salary in a job advert, companies could be missing out on top talent. It cited a study, published by Reed.co.uk, that 54% of women feel uncomfortable talking about salary at the interview stage, meaning that if this information is available before they apply, the expectations are already clear, making the conversation easier.

The government has intervened too, with a voluntary pay transparency scheme launched last year. The idea is to encourage companies to display salaries in all of their jobs – to help close gender pay gaps.

GCA Director, Kerrie Richards, offers a thought-provoking insight into salary transparency (pg 13) – perhaps there are points that you will agree or disagree with. Ultimately, you may come across a suggestion or argument that alters the way you go about recruitment –particularly useful if you’re struggling to find the appropriate candidates.

In other job news, there are changes at Autoelectro, with a new UK sales manager in place and the next generation of Bhogal looking to make his mark (pg 11). Meanwhile, Hella Gutmann has invested in a team to “meet current and future demands” (pg 26).

Have a great month.

‘Ringmechanika’ catches attention of customers and media alike

Ring invited customers and journalists to its headquarters in Leeds to showcase its current and new product offering, as well as enjoy a tour of the facilities.

Previous Ringmechanika events have been kept “more low-key”; however, for 2023, the company wanted to go “all out” and demonstrate its range of products, which includes lighting, battery care, tyre care, car accessories and towing.

Also on hand to chat with customers were representatives from Ring’s parent company, OSRAM, with its range of lighting solutions for a variety of vehicles, such as cars, motorbikes, commercial and agricultural vehicles.

More than 50 customers attended Ringmechanika, which made the event nearly double the size of last year. The feedback received was “overwhelmingly positive”.

The event also gave customers a chance to view the extensive lighting lab facilities at the headquarters, where Ring and OSRAM test bulbs to ensure they’re compliant with current legislation, while maximising their illumination of the road.

MOTORSPORT ROUND-UP

NGK-sponsored Speedway star Freddie Lindgren stormed to victory at the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw.

The Swede followed his third place at the Croatian SGP to take top spot ahead of Australia’s Jack Holder in second and three-time and current world champion, Bartosz Zmarzlik, to move up to second place in the 2023 world championship.

He won his first Speedway GP since the 2020 FIM Gorzow Speedway GP after triumphing in a restarted final after Aussie star, Jason Doyle, was disqualified after crashing, as he duelled with Zmarzlik in the first staging of the race.

The victory in front of almost 45,000 fans follows his battle with the effects of long COVID, suffered since he was first infected with the virus in March 2020 and again the following winter.

After enduring breathing difficulties and other symptoms which impacted on his training, Lindgren was elated to celebrate his sixth Speedway GP win: “I am just grateful to be healthy again. I don’t think many people understand how hard I have

had it for the last three years – only my nearest family and mechanics.

“The win feels great. I am very happy. It’s very emotional to win a GP; I haven’t done it for a long time. This is my sixth GP win tonight. I’ve had a fair few attempts, so it doesn’t come easy.

“My wife also came here with my daughter and our friends and family. I haven’t seen my daughter, Millie-Li, too much since February, apart from a couple of days now and then, so it was great to see her this weekend to have her and her mummy here as well.”

Fellow NGK-sponsored Britons threetime world champion, Tai Woffinden, and current British champion and 2022 British Grand Prix winner, Dan Bewley, both made the semi-final stage, scoring nine and 10 points respectively with Robert Lambert enduring a disappointing night, scoring five points.

John Money, who handles Speedway sponsorship on behalf of NGK-brand owner Niterra UK Ltd, said: “It was another great performance by Freddie who has

been in fine form this season. It was especially impressive considering his longterm battle with long COVID.”

Lindgren also topped the podium in the 2017 Warsaw event and has now reached the rostrum on an incredible five straight visits to PGE Narodowy.

He is now level on 36 points with Zmarzlik at the top of the Speedway GP standings, with the Pole placed higher only by virtue of his superior FIM ranking. Meanwhile, Lambert is in fifth place in the championship on 23 points, one place ahead of Woffinden, who has 21 points, with Bewley in eighth position on 20.

Autoelectro looks t o the future

From an early age, he has been engrossed in the business, whether it’s picking and packing in the warehouse, creating credit notes and purchase ledgers in the accounts department, or handling sales enquiries and liaising with customers.

That said, Harnek is under no illusions that he is taking a significant step up in the day-to-day responsibility of the business but is confident he is ready:

“I’ve grown up in the automotive environment, surrounded by Tony, Nicky and Paul, and their enthusiasm and determination to grow the business has been inspirational to me. They’re role-models, and I want to emulate what they have created – but at the same time, forge my own path.

“I’ve been given an opportunity to demonstrate my qualities, learnt through maturing at Autoelectro, gaining an economics degree from Lancaster University and previous employment with OEMs and VMs. I’m ready to grab this

opportunity with both hands.”

Harnek said he is deeply respectful of the legacy that previous generations of the Bhogal family have created since its founding in 1986. He aims to balance the traditions and values that are inherent within Autoelectro’s DNA with his own ideas, energy and perspectives to ensure the business is able to navigate the changing landscape.

He concluded: “I want to bring a philosophy that will create a culture of innovation and growth, to think outside the box, take calculated risks, and embrace change. Ultimately, I want to build on the dynamism and resilience of the existing business. I am confident we can adapt to the challenges and opportunities of the modern automotive aftermarket and succeed.”

Harnek’s move into the leadership team has been complemented with the arrival of John Cosgrove, who has joined the sales team. He is tasked with engaging with Autoelectro’s customer network and identify new opportunities.

Formerly a purchasing manager of AMK Automotive Components, before immersing himself in different roles and industries, John said he has returned to the automotive aftermarket “motivated and enthusiastic” to support the company’s founding principles of quality, range, availability and customer service.

He said: “I think Autoelectro’s capabilities, as one of the few remaining remanufacturers of rotating electrics, provides our customer base with a broad and unique portfolio of product.

“One of my goals is to work alongside our customers, to grow and expand on the awareness of the products and services we offer. I will be visiting them, informing them of the depth of our range and offers, and act as a proud brand ambassador at industry events.”

Autoelectro’s history and ambition to continue its success are just two of the reasons John jumped at the opportunity to make his mark:

“Autoelectro is a business that I was very much aware of previously and admired whilst working in the automotive aftermarket. It is a company with strong values, a trusted brand name and a longstanding history.

“In my first few weeks, I have been very impressed with the efficiencies of the business and our focus on stock availability and technical support. The design and functionality of our website offers customers a fantastic facility to be able to manage their account, check on availability and price whilst accessing technical support for all products.”

To advertise or to not advertise a salary: Glen CallumAssociates shares its insight

Glen Callum Associates (GCA) is pointing to the benefits of being open when it comes to salary, despite, it believes, many employers having a slight uncertainty around salary transparency.

While it is not a legal requirement, over the past few years, salary transparency seems to have become a growing trend, with many companies opting to include the salary range when advertising vacancies.

This, in part, could be down to younger workers demanding transparency. Research by Adobe found that 85% of upcoming and recent graduates are less likely to apply for a job if the salary is not disclosed.

Furthermore, last year, the government announced that it will be launching a voluntary pay transparency scheme, encouraging companies to display salaries in all of their job ads to help close the gender pay gap.

GCA Director, Kerrie Richards, explained: “Salary transparency is not necessarily a new trend, or one that is solely being directed by Gen Z. If you look at the statistics from various job boards,

pretty much all will say that advertising without a salary will vastly reduce your application rate, regardless of age.

“While we appreciate the reasoning behind not wanting to advertise a salary, there are plenty of benefits of being more transparent.”

GCA advised that by leaving out a salary in a job advert, companies could be missing out on top talent.

For example, a study, published by Reed.co.uk, found that 54% of women feel uncomfortable talking about salary at the interview stage, meaning if this information is available before they apply, the expectations are already clear, making the conversation easier.

GCA believes it also helps to attract a more diverse workforce, as there is a “fairer chance” for those who may not be at ease discussing their own salary expectations. It can save companies who are recruiting valuable time and effort, as it removes the

chance of beginning a process with a candidate whose salary expectations do not align with the advertised job role.

What’s more, embracing salary transparency can build trust among employees, strengthening relationships and reaffirming company culture. It helps managers to have conversations around career development, while providing clear expectations. Kerrie added: “Not all companies will adopt this trend overnight, and understandably so. However, the conversation is definitely shifting and, therefore, we advise companies that before making the decision to include, or not to include, a salary in the advert, perhaps consider their pay data. Quite often, they may find that they offer a competitive advantage in the industry.

“It’s about finding a balance between what works for a business, and what works for their employees.”

Elcome: Good cataloguing should be a priority for ever y aftermarket business

With the emergence and growing importance of digital sales channels, the way product or catalogue managers author their parts data is becoming increasingly important for the automotive aftermarket, according to Elcome Managing Director, Tim Entwistle:

Why? Because when you have good product data management, this enables companies to make more informed decisions, improve customer satisfaction, and stay ahead of the competition. Here are my top six reasons why I believe good cataloguing should be a priority for every aftermarket business:

Improved decision-making: Good catalogue management enables parts manufacturers to make data-driven decisions based on accurate and up-todate information. Companies can identify trends, track product performance, and make informed strategic decisions

Increased efficiency: Effective product data management enables companies to become more efficient. By consolidating and streamlining data sources, reducing manual data entry and duplication of effort, this can free up time for staff to focus on more value-added tasks

Improved customer satisfaction: Good cataloguing also results in providing more accurate and reliable information to customers. This can help increase

customer satisfaction and reduce the number of returns or complaints

Faster time-to-market: Effective product data management can help launch new products faster. By having accurate and up-to-date data, companies can make more informed decisions about product development and speed up the product launch process

Increased revenue: Good catalogue management can also impact the bottom line. With accurate, up-to-date data, companies can make informed decisions about pricing, promotions, and inventory management

Competitive advantage: Finally, effective product data management can give companies that – all important –competitive advantage, especially in the aftermarket. Because, by providing accurate and up-to-date product information, you can optimise performance over competitors by achieving greater visibility and range coverage

That’s why I believe that more companies should be investing in better product data management tools that can establish data standards, consolidate and normalise data from different sources, improve data quality, and leverage analytics and business intelligence to gain insights. By doing so, aftermarket companies will improve their decision-making, increase efficiency, improve customer satisfaction, launch new products faster, increase revenue, and gain a competitive advantage in an increasingly digital automotive aftermarket.

Fitting a car with an inferior exhaust can cause a wide range of expensive issues, according toKlarius, but help is at hand! Its sales director,James Ellison, explains how:

Klarius emphasises long-term impactof type approved exhausts

An aftermarket exhaust manufacturer, Klarius offers type approved products that conform and, in some cases, exceed the performance of the original part, thus, helping motorists save money. At a time when most motorists are cash-strapped, fitting a poor quality exhaust carries risks:

An inferior replacement can have a very short service life and affect overall vehicle reliability, leading to further costly repairs

Fuel economy is often compromised, meaning motorists will spend more money on fuel in the long term

Fitment can be an issue; exhausts that are difficult to fit increase the cost of repair at the garage

They can cause MOT failures by increasing emissions, which necessitates an immediate replacement to ensure vehicle roadworthiness

With exhausts costing hundreds of pounds before labour, the additional expenses of inferior replacements are something motorists can do without. Luckily, there are plenty of quality products available that save money on repairs.

Here at Klarius, we develop and test our exhausts on vehicles of correct make, model and production year – ensuring an optimum replacement that matches or exceeds OE performance. We prove this with type-approval certification from the Vehicle Certification Agency or TÜV for all our applicable parts.

Highly automated manufacturing processes, aluminised steel construction and specialist weld materials mean our products are robust and deliver long-term durability on the road. We’re so confident of our quality, we offer a ‘fit first time’ guarantee and a standard two-year warranty across our range.

Customer service integral

In short, choosing a high-quality, type approved exhaust will help save money by

being a like-for-like replacement for the OE item. First of all, it will last longer, avoiding further repairs in future. The exhaust will fit properly first time, ensuring a faster, cheaper fix. Once fitted, it will deliver OE matching performance, securing long-term vehicle reliability. Fuel economy will be protected, so increased trips to the pump don’t become the norm. Finally, it won’t negatively impact emissions, helping cars and vans to pass MOTs.

Choosing a substandard exhaust can actually result in more repairs and greater expense down the road. The best way to save motorists money is to go with the high quality solution first time.

Automation and digitisation are ‘keys t o development’for Essport

Autopart is versatile business management software that integrates sales, stock management, accounting and reporting processes in one package. One of the many tasks which Essport chose Autopart to streamline is goods receive note matching. Goods receive note invoice matching ‘AutoGRNi’ is a process that allows eBis purchase invoices and credits to be posted directly to supplier accounts on the purchase ledger.

This is done by matching and verifying them against goods receipt notes or returns notes. This often-laborious task involves matching invoices to goods received notes, requiring numerous hours and large amounts of paperwork to complete.

Opening its doors almost 50 years ago, Essport Autoparts is dedicated to providing quality parts and accessories in the belief that experience is essential for the best quality service. Essport chose Autopart as its business management system and has built it and its processes into the foundations of its productivity.

Being such an intensive job could also have an impact on accuracy. Essport Autoparts Director, Ian Smillie, advised: “Manually grni matching is long, tedious work; thanks to AutoGRNi, this process is no more than 30 minutes. Autopart does the rest for us. We have freed up a member of staff to do other tasks.”

AutoGRNi removes almost all requirement for human intervention; suppliers are set-up during the implementation period, and users can determine the upper and lower thresholds of matching in either a percent or monetary value.

Ian found that AutoGRNi helps in other ways other than freeing up staff: “A huge advantage to AutoGRNi is that it has fixed so many stock discrepancies that we have had. We have set our threshold for matching to

£1. If an invoice isn’t matched for a variance of £20, for example, we can drill into this and often find its due to a human error booking out too much stock causing a mismatch in our records. This has been a massive bonus that we weren't expecting to come from AutoGRNi matching.”

Ian concluded: “Thirty years ago, if you could provide a part delivery service same day it was impressive; now, if you can't provide in 15 minutes, you will be getting a call asking what’s happened.”

In a hectic work environment, where every minute is valuable, cutting the time a task takes from one day down to just minutes can save money, increase profitability and allow companies to stand out from the competition.

Shaftec: FlexRay helps us keep pace wi th automotive advances

In 2023 technology continues to advance at pace. This not only concerns the vehicles and powertrains, but also aftermarket parts themselves, which must be adapted to meet the everchanging communication needs of a world striving for continuously improved automotive performance. FlexRay, the next generation automotive communication protocol, is used by Shaftec to futureproof its parts and benefit its customers.

FlexRay is an electrical communication technology that is used to enable highspeed and fault tolerant data exchange between different ECUs in a vehicle. It is an evolution, not a revolution, and has evolved so that parts can synchronise to share data and communicate with a vehicle, delivering performance.

CAN (Controller Area Network) is currently used in most vehicles on the roads today, and in the past, this provided a powerful enough ‘bandwidth’ for the parts and vehicle to communicate. A communication protocol CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) was introduced and is used by some to try and bridge the gap between CAN and FlexRay.

As technology has progressed, however, more VMs have moved over to FlexRay, which allows intercommunication of all electronic parts via a car’s own mini ‘ethernet’. The aim of each protocol is the same: to provide a connection between the components and the vehicle, so everything works in tandem.

Akin to moving from dial-up to fibre-optic broadband

CAN could be compared to an old dial-up connection or 3G. With a low data transfer rate of up to 1Mbps, it can be unstable, unreliable and moves data slowly

CAN FD can be viewed as the next stepup – broadband or 4G – which is better, more reliable, and stable and moves data faster. With data transfer speeds of up to 8Mbps, it provides more flexible data frame formats, allowing more efficient use of the available bandwidth. From a technical viewpoint, CAN FD allows for data frames of 64 bytes compared to the 8 bytes limit of CAN, which reduces the number of messages

And then there’s FlexRay, which can be looked at as the equivalent to fibre optic broadband or 5G. With a data transfer rate of 10 Mbps, it’s far more stable, reliable and moves data much faster. This greater bandwidth results in greater control over safety systems and management of all components, which is critical with the constant expanding technologies in cars and their components. FlexRay also offers built in redundancy, meaning it can use two separate communication channels to transmit data. If one channel fails, the other channel can continue to transmit data. CAN does not have this functionality

Data transmitted within a specific time window

FlexRay uses a time-triggered protocol to ensure that all ECUs receive information at the same time and synchronise. This makes FlexRay important in safety-critical applications where timing is critical, such

as ADAS and autonomous driving.

Another example is where FlexRay protocols are used to send data from a steering wheel angle sensor to an ESC system to assist with vehicle stability.

Shaftec Operations Manager, Andrew Ferber, said: “With VMs using this technology on an increasing number of vehicles, at Shaftec we’ve long understood that aftermarket growth was inevitable.

“We’ve been working on this project for many years, which has required a massive amount of work into research and development, as well as greatly expanding the physical space being used within our facility to accommodate for the differing technologies in steering.

“We made the decision not to use the bridging technology protocol, CAN FD, but rather move straight to FlexRay, as CAN FD is not reversely compatible with traditional CAN systems. Where the two need to be used in the same system, a protocol converter needs to be used.

“Now, at Shaftec, we can read electrical steering racks and electrical steering pumps when they come in – as core or as a surcharge unit in return – before the remanufacturing process starts, and ensure the finished, fully remanufactured parts are compliant and able to use FlexRay communication technology when they leave us. MARKET TRENDS & ANALYSIS COMMUNICATION ADVANCES

Pearson Ham Group: Falling volumesandrisingprices defined aftermarket first quarter in 2023

The company’s review of the first quarter of 2023 determined that the UK independent aftermarket was defined by falling volumes and rising prices. Analysis of the price-volume-mix in Q1 2023 versus the same period in 2022 shows just a 1.1% growth in sales revenue –significantly smaller than the growth recorded in the 12 months before.

Higher prices led to an increase of 15.6% in revenue, but that was offset by a decrease in the number of parts sold, which delivered a 12.5% fall in revenue. There was a further 2% fall in revenue, which Pearson Ham believes is down to garages and consumers opting for cheaper brands.

With prices likely to continue to rise, thanks to the impact of Brexit on imports and remaining supply chain disruption from COVID-19, plus consistently high inflation rates – inflation reduced by a measly 0.3% in April from its 40-year record high – understanding the data

behind parts prices is more important than ever, according to Pearson Ham Group Director, Ben Martin: “Higher prices lead to a natural reduction in demand, so knowing whether or not your product is ‘price elastic’ will be crucial in forecasting how healthy 2023 revenues will be.

“Regular tracking of price movements and making appropriate responses can give suppliers a significant advantage.”

Evidence of price trend variations between sectors

Pearson Ham Group acquired Factor Sales last year, which has resulted in an enhancement to the Factor Sales service. Being a part of the Pearson Ham Group Pricing Insights division means it can provide the resources to increase both the range of products covered and the granularity of the data collected, as well as significantly upgrading the usability of the analytics provided.

Pearson Ham Group tracks average prices per part and has seen steady increases since the start of 2022, with average part prices overall 13.9% higher than they were 15 months ago. Price trends

vary between sectors, according to the company; for instance, between Q1 2022 and Q1 2023, lubricants and fluids have increased by 26.5%, while transmission parts have only risen by 1.6%.

Return rates

cost to businesses”

In total, the cost of parts returned to motor factors overall in the first quarter of 2023 alone amounted to £63 million. Ben added: “Understanding what parts are being returned and how often they are can help manage your stock levels. Suppliers should also look to act where they experience a higher product return rate comparative to their competitors for the same part.

“To stay ahead of the competition, make use of all the market data you can get hold of to inform your pricing and marketing decisions, track pricing trends and dive into the detail to understand category and product trends and evaluate variations at a regional or buying group level.”

Nissens: We supply pr emium grade replacement parts

Nissens Automotive possesses decades of thermal management experience and has, therefore, developed a comprehensive engine cooling range alongside its AC portfolio, all of which are manufactured to Nissens ‘genuine quality’ standards, to allow you to supply independent workshops with premium grade replacement parts. These operate to the same performance levels as the original and so provides an aftermarket solution they can depend on.

So, returning to the theme of engine management, every vehicle powered by a combustion engine –and that therefore includes hybrids –needs effective thermal control of the engine, which means not only cooling to prevent overheating, but also means the quickest possible buildup in temperature to reach and then be maintained at the optimum level.

Naturally, the combustion process causes very high temperature ranges, exposing an engine’s block and its equipment to an extremely high thermal stress. Furthermore, turbocharged combustion systems also need sufficient air cooling to obtain the right charge performance. Manual gearboxes, as well as power transmission units, all need active engine management to ensure each component is operating at its design

temperature to ensure the optimum performance of the whole powertrain.

To achieve these sometimes conflicting objectives increasingly requires electrical sensors, which itself reflects the growing number of electronically controlled components utilised in modern vehicle design. As a result, Nissens added engine coolant and oil temperature sensors to its range of thermal management solutions. These introductions mirror the company’s ongoing focus on vehicle electrification and follows its launch of high voltage AC compressors, eactuated turbochargers, EGR valves, fans, fan clutches, blowers and electric water pumps. Precise product identification, technical information, along with detailed drawings and complete pictures, as well as further information, such as sensor type, thread size and connection shape data, is easily accessible via Nissens' online catalogue, which also contains imagery of each part.

Sensors “only part of the story”

Components as diverse as radiators, oil coolers, fans, expansion tanks, water pumps and fans all play their part in the thermal control side of engine management, which is why, for the past

nine decades, Nissens has been dedicated to deliver a comprehensive product range to the automotive engine cooling system. The company’s technical knowhow, manufacturing experience and deep insight in thermal systems mean that it is flexible and able to meet the emerging market needs and can supply a wide range of premium quality engine cooling components.

In addition, the genuine Nissens quality standard ensures that the company’s broad product range delivers excellent durability and working performance, as well as trouble-free fitment. Nissens components are supplied with all the necessary installation parts whenever required by the original – for example, nuts, bolts, mounting clips and O-Rings etc – and are included in the box, which means that you can provide technicians with a Nissens ‘first fit’ solution.

Looking for efficiency?

The Nissens product portfolio of more than 4,500 parts covers everything from the fast moving to the more exotic brands from European, Asian and American VMs, with in excess of 17,700 OE numbers. These encompass radiators, intercoolers, cooling fans, water pumps, oil coolers, expansion tanks, fan clutches and, now, turbochargers.

PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JUNE 2023 I 25 DIAGNOSTICS & ENGINE MANAGEMENT
Effective engine management covers more than control of the ignition system and exhaust emissions. Thermal management requirements are sometimes overlooked, according to Nissens Marketing Manager, Jan Zieleskiewicz:

Hella Gutmann invests in te am to ‘meet current and future demands’

With its eyes set on the future, Hella Gutmann, the workshop equipment division of OE supplier HELLA, has “reinvigorated and strengthened” its UK team to ensure it can continue to provide its customer base with diagnostic tools and ADAS calibration solutions – to the highest level of technical support. HELLA Sales and Marketing Director, Ian Boyle, picks up the story:

We’ve enhanced the Hella Gutmann team, as the time is right to grasp a real opportunity to adapt to what the market needs right now, and perhaps more importantly, what it needs moving forward. Although this focus is primarily within the Hella Gutmann team, the internal changes we’re making also affect the aftermarket parts division of the business too.

We will have a much higher focus to integrate more closely the Hella Gutmann offering with our HELLA parts sales. The Hella Gutmann team will be upskilled to be able to have deeper discussions about parts and better represent the complete HELLA brand, and the aftermarket team will, likewise, be upskilled to have a greater understanding of the workshop equipment products. Both are touch points with our customers that allow us to present a consistent message to express what HELLA represents and both the parts and services that we can provide to the market. This allows us to meet the current and future demands of our customers more fully, as the complexity of vehicles has led to a much greater need to be able to support an end-to-end offering of diagnostics, ADAS and related component products.

Know-how and ability

We have invested to take the business forward and in the Hella Gutmann team, this has resulted in the recruitment of key personnel with the know-how and ability necessary to achieve this undertaking. Instrumental in this process is our new UK

Sales Manager, Julian Goulding, a wellknown and highly respected professional, with a huge amount of knowledge and experience. He will be supported by a longstanding member of the Hella Gutmann family, Key Account Manager, Riccardo Sorano. We have created a new role of technical and training manager and to this position we have appointed Steve Fox. He has a wealth of experience in diagnostics and ADAS; he will be a real asset to ensure we can accelerate the education to the industry in these key areas.

DENSO: We’re driving aftermarket innovation

development around electric and hybrid vehicles, DENSO is future-focused, according to Pan EU Strategic Marketing Manager, Fatiha Laauich:

DENSO is also a significant player in the development of engine management systems, which it supplies to the independent sector through its aftermarket division. DENSO provides reliable, OE solutions to ensure a complete and quality repair.

With the extreme demands placed on engine management systems (EMS) and the individual components that are involved in them, an advanced design and the highest quality are among the qualities that a reputable replacement part should offer as standard. In addition, precision is also vitally important to ensure it is an exact fit for the vehicle and avoid the risk of subsequent, difficult to trace, electronic malfunctions.

Although it is possible for two OE parts to look identical, EMS components are usually developed for a specific engine architecture, so each might have different functional behaviour. Examples of these invisible, yet crucial, differences include a different pinout on the connector, different internal components and distinctive firmware loaded into the electronics.

Generic EMS products, which are aimed at a wide range of applications, may not match the OE specification. Sometimes this is noticeable because of poor fitment, but even when it’s not, other problems can develop over time, such as higher fuel consumption, increased exhaust emissions

or poor engine performance. These can lead to further complications, like causing the engine to stall or only allowing it to operate in ‘limp-home’ mode.

However, as an OE EMS manufacturer, DENSO pays a great deal of attention to optimising its parts for specific applications to ensure better overall performance, efficiency and long term reliability.

DENSO's expanding EMS aftermarket products include:

Cam and crankshaft position sensors

EGT sensors

EGR valves

Ignition coils

Fuel pumps

MAP sensors

MAF sensors

Lambda sensors

For more information about DENSO, www.rdr.link/FFV015

Did you know?

DENSO developed the world's first EGR valve with an integrated air intake throttle valve. This EGR combination valve is half the size of conventional models, reducing weight, which is key in today’s downsized engines

DENSO launched the world’s first plug-in type MAF meter inserted into the intake pipe wall, reducing the size and weight, as well as aiding installation

DENSO was the first to introduce quantitative measurement to lambda sensors, enabling them to sense both if the air/fuel mixture is too lean, or too rich, and by how much

DENSO EMS products are fitted as OE by many VMs. The aftermarket range meets the same quality standard as its OE products

In addition to EMS components, the full DENSO aftermarket programme includes AC, ignition, diesel, rotating electrics and wiper blades, further details of which can be found online

UFI Filters and Hyundai Tucson a ‘historical partnership’

The Hyundai Tucson, which features UFI Filters as OE, was named the bestselling C-segment SUV in Europe in 2022 – an achievement celebrated by the manufacturer – but what is it about the UFI filter that ticks the boxes?

According to data published by JATO Dynamics, a company specialising in the automotive business intelligence sector, 150,803 Tucsons were registered in Europe last year. Now in its fourth edition, with editions two, three and four featuring UFI as OE, the Korean manufacturer’s car has been confirmed as the most popular mid-segment SUV over time.

New generation diesel fuel filter: eco-friendly and integrated with multiple functions

UFI Filters supplies an OE diesel filtration system to the 1.6 CRDi engine of the new Tucson, as well as for the MHEV (below). Compared to the previous version, the advantages of this new module include the integration of multiple functions, lightweight plastic materials and cartridge made from ecological materials.

The water presence sensor, ceramic material heater and pressure sensor are all located within the same group sensor unit, positioned at the top of the filter. This allows for greater heat exchange efficiency, according to UFI.

The filter cartridge has a high-water separation capacity, produced according to the exclusive material in FormulaUFI.Stratiflex, which separates the water particles based on the coalescence principle. Reinforced with an internal hydrophobic mesh, the filter blocks the water droplets and makes them fall to the bottom of the module tank where there is a draining plug. The water presence sensor signals precisely when it is time to empty the tank.

UFI Filters fuel filtration technology

Thanks to its industrial site in Korea, UFI Filters boasts a historical partnership with Hyundai. Indeed, its second-generation Tucson (diesel version) was equipped with the complete fuel filter made with the exclusive filter media in FormulaUFI.Stratiflex (top-right).

The UFI module for Tucson (2015-2021) comprises an aluminium head with a pressure sensor and a heater, while the filter body is equipped with a water presence sensor. This is all supplied inside a retainer to protect the system from impact. The steel filter element encloses a dual-stage filtration system, made of FormulaUFI.Stratiflex: a first barrier for impurities and water formed by a cellulose-based media, along with a second made of hydrophobic mesh to eliminate residual water particles.

The filtering efficiency is greater than 99% at 4 µm, while the water separation exceeds 90% according to ISO 16332. The water presence sensor, moreover, signals when it is necessary to purge the liquid collected at the bottom of the filter tank.

UFI Filters trusted by 95% of VMs

The company’s OE know-how is advantageous in the aftermarket, according to the company, with its replacement parts equal in quality to its OE counterparts.

“The steel filter element encloses a dual-stage filtration system, made of FormulaUFI.Stratiflex: a first barrier for impurities and water formed by a cellulose-based media, along with a second made of hydrophobic mesh to eliminate residual water particles.”

The diesel filter for the second generation Hyundai Tucson, for example, is available in the aftermarket catalogue with the UFI brand, under the code 24.123.00, and with the brand SOFIMA, under the code S 4123 NR. Meanwhile, the introduction of the eco-cartridge in the catalogue for the latest generation Tucson is currently under development.

‘You can’t go wrong with a Comline filter ’:distributor heaps praise on range

Unlike braking, with its ECE R90 regulations, there is no mandatory filtration standard for manufacturers or suppliers to adhere to, according to Comline; however, that hasn’t stopped the supplier from taking its responsibility to provide the industry with a tried, tested and trusted range seriously.

Every Comline filter is manufactured inside audited production facilities; therefore, each part number meets its brand quality standards and follows ISO 9001, ISO 140001 and TS16949 certifications.

Comline argued that it is sticking to its end of the bargain, but what about further down the chain? Recent years have been tough on many people – and continue to this day – so there has been potential for lowergrade filtration products to make a more pronounced mark on the industry, claimed Comline. Quality might be jeopardised by using inferior materials or filters being produced in factories which may not have the credentials that Comline has, for example.

According to the company, the difficulty is that this leads to a false economy, as poor filtration could lead to higher repair costs if the part fails – in particular with engine oil filters. As a consequence, sticking with engine oil filters, this inferiority can lead to engine damage or even failure. Given that motorists are already feeling the pinch, this is one that they will want to avoid.

Millions of filters sold around the globe!

Proud to offer an expansive ‘all-makes’ range, Comline distributes millions of ownbrand filters every year. Air, oil, fuel, cabin and carbon: “You can’t go wrong with a Comline filter; performance and reliability is always impressive, and the brand does a great job keeping its range up-to-date,” said Rory, a Comline distributor based in Ireland.

Switching to cabin filters, these are designed to protect from contaminants: allergens, dust mites, pollen, toxic fumes and dirt, not to mention bad odours. Comline reported that its carbon activated range helps prevent respiratory problems, cardiovascular issues, allergic reactions, asthma triggers and carcinogenic effects. They remove micro-contaminants, such as toxic gases like benzine and ozone. Clean, filtered and oxygenated air will reduce fatigue, improve concentration and fend off window misting.

A video explaining the dangers of

contaminants and highlighting the importance of a quality cabin filter can be found at www.rdr.link/FFV021

First for filters

Product reliability needs to be matched with accurate data. Comline possesses the “gold standard” in this field. Last year, it was presented with the prestigious ‘Premier Data Supplier’ honour by TecDoc.

Premier Data Supplier status is for suppliers whose data meets the “highquality standards in a special way” and “contribute to sustainable sales success” –and Comline’s portfolio of 14,000 part numbers – which includes filtration, as well as braking and steering and suspension –fulfils that strict criteria.

What’s more, GT85 has the capacity to penetrate even the tiniest of gaps, perfect for freeing seized bolts and stubborn parts. The precision nozzle on the spray allows for accurate application, enabling access to even the most hard-to-reach areas.

GT85 is an all-in-one spray that can be used on engines, car and motorbike parts, bicycles, tools, and heavy-duty machinery. The formula restores the shine to metal, chrome, and plastic surfaces whilst offering long-term protection. No matter how stubborn the stuck parts, GT85's powerful spray will loosen them up with ease!

Upsell opportunity this summer!

Your customers should be busy preparing their tools for summer, crucial in ensuring their longevity and performance. High humidity and moisture during the summer months can cause metal tools to rust and corrode, leading to damage and reduced functionality. And the summer heat can cause tool components to expand and contract, affecting their performance.

Therefore, GT85 is poised to be a valuable addition to countertops over the coming months. Spraying a clean rag liberally and wiping down the handles and casing, and carefully buffing along the blades and drill bits too, is straightforward but important advice. For any areas that require pin-point precision, technicians should remember the red straw!

Proper preparation, such as lubing, cleaning, protecting, and storing tools correctly, can extend their lifespan and save customers money in the long run too, according to GT85. Not to mention, well-maintained tools perform better, require less effort to use, increase efficiency and ensure optimal results.

Summer motor maintenance simplified

Maintaining a vehicle with lubricant during summer is essential to preventing damage and maintaining a flawless appearance.

GT85 is confident it has the ideal product for your customers’ toolbox this summer, thanks to its

Lubrication helps to prevent overheating by reducing friction and dissipating heat. Additionally, GT85 can protect against corrosion caused by humidity and moisture, extending the lifespan of the engine and other metal parts. Regular lubrication also helps to improve performance, fuel efficiency, and reduce wear and tear.

This is achieved with GT85 spraying the formula onto a clean rag. The user then wipes it down all metal components, including the doors, windshield, wing mirrors, rear windows and the paintwork. And for those challenging areas, the red straw attachment comes to the fore once more, by applying it directly to clean and protect steel or metal components, such as the exhaust, frame rails, leaf springs, nuts and bolts, suspension, weld seams, and wheel wells.

On yer bike!

For fair-weather cyclists and those with families, warmer temperatures means wiping the dust and pumping the tyres up in preparation for those afternoon rides! GT85 prevents rust, reduces friction and helps a smoother ride. It can be used on various parts of the bicycle, such as chains, small moving parts, and hard-to-reach areas, which can be easily accessed with the red straw attachment.

GT85 can also be applied to pivot points, gear and brake cables, under the saddle, frame tubes, brake callipers, and under the fork crown; however, it can’t be used everywhere! Brakes, braking surfaces – like rim walls and disc rotors – bottom brackets, headsets, fork stanchions, and free hubs should be avoided.

The majority of CAT failures in the UK are due to over fuelling as a result of air leaks within the system and other upstream issues, according to EEC. At this point, the CAT is unable to continue performing the emissions reduction it needs to, and engine management lights will appear as a result.

EEC also offers a “widely praised” after-sales service and technical advice.

Ben continued: “It’s so important for the customer to be aware that we are here to help. Our technical department have years of experience and are more than happy to point people in the right direction through on-site visits and technical seminars. Education on emissions products is vital to a customer growing the emissions side of their business.”
