(Certificate of Average Distribution for the issues distributed between January and December 2023)
SO HERE ITIS…
It feels a bit strange writing my last editorial before Christmas seeing as we were only closing the December 2023 issue of PEW last week. Oh no, what’s that? I’ve just checked and yes apparently another 12 months have indeed passed and here we are careering towards 2025.
Because of how editorial deadlines work we’ll actually be doing a lot of the work for our January/February issue in December. Once upon a time this could be quite difficult as in my early editorial days you had to squeeze your work in between the days you were attending multiple industry Christmas lunches – keeping up appearances and all that! But times and habits change and now I sit here still with an ever growing job list - for both business and leisure –wondering how I ever found the time at all!
“ In the electrotechnical sector the commitment to house building and low carbon technology was widely welcomed.”
In 2024 we’ve had both the UK and US elections, the results of which I won’t dwell on too much here, but rather what they might mean for the electrical and wider construction industry as a whole for the next few years. The new Labour government’s first Budget in October received a mixed response (as most Budgets tend to do), and in the electrotechnical sector the commitment to house building and low carbon technology was widely welcomed. However, many industry leaders also felt crucial details were lacking in several key areas, including the Future Homes Standard, manufacturing, and the development and access to skilled personnel. It is of course still early days but clarity in these areas and others is needed sooner rather than later.
Across the pond, Donald Trump will be sworn in for his second term as President in January, and the early indications are that he will withdraw his country from the Paris climate agreement. This will obviously alarm other global leaders who continue to work toward a greener future. Whatever Mr Trump decides, those of us who can make a positive difference must continue to do so where we can, and that includes us in the trade press. And, right on cue, we have a Renewables & Green Technology feature in this issue, where we take a look at some of the products available to help customers make environmentally-conscious choices.
I would like to wish all our readers a very happy Christmas and we’ll see you in 2025!

LUCECO LIGHTING
UTILISED IN LABEL PRINTING COMPANY WAREHOUSE
When Scottish high-end alcohol label printing company, Spirit Label Solutions, moved into a new £5m warehouse, they asked local business Electrical Solutions to come up with a lighting scheme, and with the help of Luceco, they delivered the solution.
Starting from scratch in an empty warehouse, Luceco carried out a survey of the site to decide the best indoor, outdoor and emergency lighting for the space. This warehouse had to double up as both a printing warehouse and an office space, so the lighting had to be suitable for both applications, as Chris Bryant, Group Managing Director of Electrical Solutions (Scotland), explained: “The brief we were given by our contractors, Advanced Building Contractors Ltd, was to supply a lighting scheme for a manufacturing space and a small office in the same warehouse.
The winners were:
● FSA Outstanding Contribution to Fire Detection and Alarm Industry –Graham Newman
● FSA Outstanding Contribution to Security Systems Industry award –Kevin Sparrow
● Contractor of the Year Award (up to £1mn turnover) – RKES (Wales)
● Best Client Partnership Award –Alpine Works
● Best Health and Safety Initiative Award – EnergyAce
● ECA Contractor of the Year Award (up to £5mn turnover) – Source
Electrical Services
● Best Sustainability Project - RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services
● Excellence in Training and Development Award – Powercor
● Best Supply Chain Partnership –Crown Highways
● FSA Best Fire and Security Project Award - Triple Star Fire and Security
● ECA Contractor of the Year Award (up to £15mn turnover) – EnergyAce
The client had limited knowledge of lighting, so working with Luceco we were able to recommend the appropriate lighting and fittings for the job.
“When we visited the site with Luceco, we carried out a survey and produced a lighting design to meet their requirements. One thing we knew we had to get right was the balance of natural lighting in the space. The warehouse featured big skylights, which in the day provided the best natural light that wasn’t too warm or cold. We needed to replicate the same natural light when it got darker as accurate colour rendering is essential for printing environments and so LED lighting was an ideal solution.”
LED lighting provides the perfect solution for industries that require the
LG1 recommended Colour Rendering Index (CRI), as it has only a small oscillation in light output and eliminates the strobed effect often caused by traditional lamped luminaires.
Following the site survey and lighting design, Spirit Label Solutions chose to use Luceco’s Elara Bay, cost-effective LED luminaires, ideal for high ceiling mounting positions in industrial and warehouse environments, and surface mounted LuxPanels for the office spaces.
Chris added: “We chose to work with Luceco as we trusted them with their proposal and knew we were going to have their support throughout the entire project from planning and ordering to fitting and future repairs, and the client was delighted with the transformation.”

WINTER BLUES
Winter and the darker months can be a struggle for some. EIC is seeking to raise awareness for those who may find it challenging to navigate.
As the snow blankets the ground and festive lights twinkle, Christmas ushers in not just joy, but also the cold clench of financial worry for many. It’s a time when the pressure to spend meets the all-too-common reality of a tight budget. If you find yourself dreading the seasonal spend rather than dreaming of a white Christmas, here are a few strategies to manage your finances during the holidays:
Budget with cheer: Start with a clear budget. Allocate funds for necessary expenses, modest gifts, and even a small reserve for unexpected costs.
Homemade happiness: Handmade presents or the gift of time can often mean more than anything store-bought.
Festive fellowship: Hosting a potluck dinner instead of a full-blown feast can ease the financial load while fostering community spirit.
Seek support: If you’re struggling, reach out. Many communities offer resources to help during the holidays, from food banks to financial counselling.
SELF-CARE TIPS
Winter’s chill often brings more than just the cold; it can usher in a sense of loneliness, anxiety, and a need for selfcare. During this season, it’s vital to look after yourself, physically and emotionally.
Stay active: Cold weather can deter the most dedicated from physical activity. Find indoor exercises or bundle up for a brisk walk to keep your spirits high.
Connect with nature: The limited daylight can be a downer. Whenever the sun peeks through, take a moment to soak it in. Even brief exposure to natural light can elevate your mood.
Nourish your body: Comfort foods are abundant during this time, but balance them with nutritious choices that feed both your body and soul.
Mindful relaxation: Practice mindfulness or meditation. The calmness and focus can be a balm for the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
FINDING SOLACE
The holidays can amplify the silence left by the absence of loved ones. For those
coping with loss, the festive season is often a paradox of light and shadow.
Honor traditions: Continue a tradition that your loved one cherished. It can be a beautiful way to remember them and keep their spirit alive.
Create new rituals: Sometimes, starting a new ritual can be a step towards healing. Light a candle, share stories, or make a donation in their name.
Allow emotions: Give yourself permission to feel all emotions. Joy, sadness, longing – they’re all part of the intricate tapestry of grief.
Seek community: Reach out to support groups or community events. Sharing your feelings with those who understand can be incredibly healing.
COMBATING ISOLATION
While Christmas is often a time for gathering, it can also be a stark reminder of solitude for some. In the depth of winter, here are ways to fend off isolation and reconnect with the warmth of community:
Volunteer your time: Helping others is a powerful way to combat loneliness and make meaningful connections.
Join local events: Attend community events or holiday functions. These can provide a senseof belonging and offer new friendships.
Be a friendly neighbour: Sometimes the simplest acts, like sharing a meal or a conversation with a neighbour, can make the biggest difference.

FACE TO FACE FOCUS SB
In this month’s Face to Face we speak with Gary Stevens, Managing Director of Focus SB, to find out more about the company and the ever changing wiring accessories market.
QWhat are the origins of Focus SB as a British manufacturer?
A. We commenced trading in 1979 under the name Sussex Brassware and the main product offering was architectural ironmongery which then led to the introduction of a range of electrical accessories utilising third party electrical inserts and assembling into our own inhouse produced and finished plates.
After some changes to the company structure Focus Electrical was born and was a separate entity to Sussex Brassware. Some years later the two companies joined forces under the name Focus SB and we acquired the toolmaking company that were up to that point producing the plates for our electrical accessories. It was also around this time that it was decided to shed the architectural ironmongery products in favour of focusing on electrical accessories.
In 2016, Focus SB launched its own range of electrical inserts to become totally stand alone and the only company in its sector to boast in-house capabilities of metal plate manufacture, finishing and assembly of its own range of electrical inserts.
In that time we can also boast a number of firsts, including the first (and only premium electrical accessories manufacturer in our industry) outside of mainland China to be certified by their national quality standards authority to design and manufacture a range of ‘CCC’ products outside of the country to sell back into China, and that formed the basis of our King’s Awards for Enterprise winning entry in 2023.
Another first was the development and launch of a double throw centre off retractive toggle switch for the lighting control and shading market in 2017.
Finally, another significant first was the design and launch of the first true flat plate screwless range of electrical accessories – Renaissance in 2023. Made from quality stainless steel and solid brass raw materials, our product components are approved to British Standards and independently tested by Intertek for safety. We operate a Quality Management System which complies with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015.
QWhich wiring accessory finishes are proving popular with customers at the moment?
A. Anything that is either ‘antique’ or ‘aged’! Antique/Aged/Jordan/Chocolate/Dark Bronze and Aged or unlacquered brass
and derivatives of those finishes are by far the most popular finishes at present and have been for some time now. We get temporary trends that are influenced by other building products, for example Matt Black has been popular over the last 12 months or so and Polished and Satin Brass seems to be making a slight comeback, but Bronze variants and Aged/Antique Brass dominate the popularity stakes.
QIn an increasingly crowded wiring accessories market, how does Focus SB ensure that its products stand out?
A. When I first came into the electrical wiring accessory manufacturing sector in 1987, there were three ‘flat plate’ grid mounting, secondary fix manufacturers in the UK and virtually no overseas competitors. Fast forward 37 years and now we find that to most customers, the flat plate electrical accessory product is more of a commodity, with most manufacturers offering flat plate electrical accessories at various levels of quality, range and finish variants.
At Focus SB we have strived to set our products apart by their quality, range of finishes, bespoke offering and innovative product development. This strategy has helped us become one of the largest manufacturers of wiring accessories supplying into the luxury residential, hospitality and heritage markets, with an annual turnover of £6M purely in electrical accessories.
However, our philosophy is to not stand still and wait for the competition to catch up where the only strategy becomes price
centric. We are constantly monitoring the market, gaining insight and feedback from customers, monitoring competitor activity in the UK and globally, monitoring trends in finishes and styles from competitive and allied products. Over the past four years we have worked on designing and launching two trademarked ranges.
Working in collaboration with our partners Lutron, we have designed and developed a complementary range of electrical accessories to match to their award-winning range of lighting control keypads in their flagship Alisse range. The brief was to match the style, form factor and finishes of the Alisse keypad because most interior designers and some discerning clients desire to have ‘design continuity’ on their projects.
Following on from the launch of the “Alisse by Focus SB” range, we started the process of designing a range of true flat plate screwless electrical accessories in 2021, and in 2023 the patent pending Renaissance range was launched into the market. So, what is so special about Renaissance? It is the first solid brass, flat plate screwless range on the market. Most electrical accessory manufacturers have a screwless range in their portfolio because that is what designers are looking for. However, most of those designs are based on thin plate material that is often ‘dished’ to clip onto or into a visible plastic grid, or into a visible metal frame.
The design criteria for Renaissance was to be a solid flat plate with no visible fixing screws or frame/grid (which is where the patent is based). It should also be available as standard with square corners (another feature not available with existing screwless products) and finally we need to have the ability to produce oversized and bespoke configured plates. We achieved all of this and the range was launched in 2023 and has been a phenomenal success! It now represents the biggest, most comprehensive range in our portfolio.
The big change for Focus SB as a manufacturer has been driven by the development of these two products and the trend is to go even further with this style of product with some exciting plans for expansion in the pipeline.
“ The humble light switch and socket is becoming more of a focal point. ”
The main challenge to us as a manufacturer has been the transition from stamping flat plate products, to precision CNC machining of thicker solid brass materials to be able to offer that extra quality to our customers. Renaissance and Alisse electrical accessories are manufactured from 2.5mm and 3.5mm solid brass, so clients can not only see the quality of finish, but they can also feel the quality compared to thinner pressed plates. The move towards CNC machining was a relatively easy one for Focus SB because of our history, we were already part way through that journey, but we are now investing in the next generation of CNC machines and automation in order to support our strategy for the future.
QStylised wiring accessories were historically viewed as a luxury reserved for high end projects. Are there signs they are now being considered in a wider range of installations?
A. They are being used in more mainstream projects now, but that ties in with the points made above where lower cost, lower quality products are available having been commoditised, but they have a more design-led appearance than the traditional dished plate metal accessories, or even white plastic electrical accessories. This is the main reason why we at Focus SB have moved into higher specification, higher quality product development as mentioned above. We offer a high quality, sustainable alternative to ‘off-the-shelf’ plastic switches and sockets with our beautifully finished hand assembled faceplates and components specified by prominent design consultants for world class hospitality and leisure resorts, prime residential developments, heritage buildings, royal residences, superyachts and commercial projects internationally. Combining traditional methods of manufacturing complemented by the latest
technology, Focus SB’s distinctive faceplates and switches feature elements of hand finishing, with every product hand assembled in Great Britain.
Q Do Focus offer bespoke services for custom projects?
A. Yes, this is covered above, but we set ourselves apart from the volume manufacturers by offering a bespoke service. We can design and manufacture to most customer specifications and very often work in collaboration with the designers at the early stages so that we can add our experience of producing bespoke products and also to be able to design for manufacture which is crucial to be able to produce something to the client’s specification and to fit with the budget and programme for the project. Bespoke includes product configuration as well as bespoke finishes to match other products, or the designers colour scheme.
QWhat are the features and trends to look out for in 2025?
A. We firmly believe that the traditional approach to specifying and designing electrical accessories has moved on and that the humble light switch and socket is becoming more of a focal point and part of the designer’s story than it ever has been and will continue to be held in the same importance on a project as the lighting and architectural ironmongery. We have always used the term ‘wall jewellery’ to describe Focus SB’s electrical accessories and this is even more relevant with the new generation of electrical accessories we are providing into the market.

POSITIVE THINKING
With condensation and mould season upon us, electrical wholesalers have seen a surge in requests for ventilation that can tackle the problem as households ask electricians for a solution. As a result, Positive Input Ventilation is becoming extremely popular since it is an effective solution that removes persistent condensation and prevents mould while improving indoor air quality (IAQ). Stuart Eglin, Manrose Sales Director, explains.
Recently, Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) has become a popular solution to rid homes of mould. Ideal for refurbished properties, PIV offers a whole house ventilation solution that can be installed in the loft. PIV provides wholesalers with an option that is designed to prevent and treat condensation and mould quickly, making it ideal for electricians looking for a quick solution for customers. So how does it work? Simple to use and install, a loft-mounted positive input fan draws fresh air from the loft, filters it and gently feeds it into the home via a ceilingmounted diffuser. Clean, fresh filtered air with a lower moisture content dilutes, displaces and replaces contaminated and moisture-laden air.
What wholesalers need to know
Ventilation is the easiest way to tackle condensation and mould’s moisture in the air. By removing the moisture and other pollutants from the air, condensation cannot settle on cold surfaces and mould cannot grow, removing the problem at source.
For electricians PIV is a breath of fresh air since it is effortlessly installed. Simple to fit and commission in any size loft, only a hole in the ceiling is needed to fit the diffuser and no external cut outs are needed. Designed to make both electricians’ and electrical wholesaler’s lives easier, PIV like Manrose’s Lo-Watt Pivotal comes complete with a ceiling diffuser, flexible duct and G4 filters, plus hanging kit and floor mounting base as standard, so there is everything that is needed to complete the installation. Meanwhile, a handle incorporated into the unit makes it easy and safe to carry the PIV which is especially useful when lifting through loft hatches.
The unit is supplied with a diffuser to be installed in a central location within the property e.g. in the main hallway of a bungalow or in the landing in a conventional property. The unit is easily set to the appropriate speed at installation based on the size of the property. Natural leakage points that are present in all properties, as well as purpose provided exhaust points, enhance the air change.
Once the PIV is installed, depending on the property, it could take between a few hours to a few days to start to see the effects and may take a couple of weeks for the areas affected with mould to dry out completely. So, households should be happy with seeing a solution that works so quickly.
Cost of living
Another feature wholesalers should also make electricians aware of is the low running costs of the latest energy efficient PIV. This will make PIV attractive for households in the current cost of living crisis. The Lo-Watt Pivotal will continuously ventilate silently in the background while in ‘Trickle’ mode. Once the unit automatically senses excess heat being lost into the loft, the airflow will increase to ‘Energy Recovery’ mode to recover heat that would otherwise be lost through the roof. During summer months, should the loft exceed 27°C (adjustable), the unit will enter ‘Standby’ mode to stop the circulation of warm air allowing for a more comfortable living environment.
“ Another feature wholesalers should also make electricians aware of is the low running costs of the latest energy efficient PIV.”
Breathe easy
PIV also provides whole house air purification and humidity control, which adds up to a great solution for households. Operating by drawing in warm, fresh air from the loft, PIV units, such as Manrose’s Lo-Watt Pivotal, filter all incoming air via G4 filters before gently introducing it into habitable areas of a property via a ceiling mounted diffuser. These G4 filters help protect against everyday pollen and dust creating a healthier indoor environment, with good IAQ and low humidity levels. Poor IAQ and mould can lead to health issues such as asthma and itchy skin. PIV reduces the risk of health issues in the home by improving IAQ and quickly eradicating conditions that lead to mould growth in the first place. With filtered air there are also fewer allergens or triggers in the air, helping reduce health problems for households.
Whisper quiet
Electrical wholesalers can also reassure electricians of PIV’s quiet operation. Out of sight, out of mind - once installed in a loft, a PIV unit will operate without the household even noticing it is running thanks to its quiet operation. There are PIV units now available that are near silent in operation; for example, at the point of supply into the house the Lo-Watt Pivotal is almost inaudible.
Wholesalers can also reassure their customers that PIV units will not cause an irritating cool draft either. Many units come with a comfort heater which tempers the incoming air. In addition, when the air in the loft is warm (due to heat rising from the main living area or through solar gain), the unit will boost to recirculate the warm air back into the property helping to save money on energy bills too. For example, the Lo-Watt Pivotal range includes a heater and non-heater, model, the Lo-Watt Pivotal with 500W heater helps reduce the chill as fresh air enters the property. The controls allow the Lo-Watt Pivotal with 500W heater to be adjusted making it adaptable for different lifestyles.
The unit is also made using recycled material, offering a more sustainable choice for households.

WINAYEAR’S FAMILY NATIONAL TRUST MEMBERSHIP
To win, just take a look at the new ZV700N smart switch and answer one simple question.
Make 2025 the year your customers sort out LED flickering once and for all. Timeguard’s new smart wall switch is a simple direct two-wire replacement for a standard switch that really does eliminate the flickering that can be a problem when controlling LED lighting with smart switches.
This is because the power is routed through an internal battery, rather than capacitors. The small mains current that has to be maintained to power the switch itself is absorbed by a trickle-charging battery, which can hold onto it unlike the capacitors used in earlier design concepts. The mains supply is therefore effectively isolated from the switching controls and cannot cause flickering with even the lowest power LEDs. The ZV700N offers all the automatic time control options you would expect from Timeguard, including timed and photocell control, as well as acting as a normal switch.
HOW TO ENTER

FIT FOR PURPOSE
Multi-function testers (MFTs) save electricians time by combining essential tests into one device. Steve Dunning, Managing Director at Martindale, explains how the latest models can simplify tasks, reduce errors and ensure compliance.
For electricians, having the right tools at your fingertips can make a big difference. Multifunction testers (MFTs), handheld devices that can perform a variety of electrical tests, are a good and necessary addition to a toolbox; they reduce time spent on-site and cut the chance of costly errors without sacrificing accuracy or compliance with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
MFTs are used to test low voltage circuits and ensure that electrical installations are safe and meet regulations. They can perform a range of tests, including continuity tests, insulation
resistance tests, earth fault low impedance tests and wiring polarity, among others. Because they combine so many tests into one easy to use device, it means less equipment to carry around, fewer cables to connect and, most importantly, less chance of making a mistake during testing.
MFTs are real time-savers and can make a big difference, especially on larger projects or jobs where deadlines are tight. By cutting out the need to swap between different devices, electricians can significantly speed up their work rate. Instead of recalibrating or setting up new testers for each different test, an MFT allows you to jump straight into the next task. For electricians working on multiple jobs or large-scale projects, this can make a huge difference to productivity.
Cutting out the errors
MFTs are designed to be simple; many have intuitive user interfaces with onscreen guides, which simplify even complex tests. As these devices walk the user through each step and flag any issues, electricians are far less likely to make errors or have to perform tests for a second time. It might seem like a small advantage, but these time-saving moments quickly add up.
But MFTs aren’t just about speeding up testing – they are incredibly precise too. Performing critical tests such as voltage measurements, earth resistance and insulation checks requires accuracy, and MFTs are designed to deliver reliable results. Some MFT models also come with onboard memory, so electricians can store test results directly on the device. This is a massive help when preparing reports or needing to verify compliance. Instead of manually recording every reading (and risking transcription errors), electricians can save the data digitally and generate professional, accurate reports later.
There is no doubt that clients notice when a job is done quickly and professionally. A reliable MFT not only helps electricians complete work to a high standard but also gives them the tools to back it up with solid test results. Clients appreciate detailed reports and MFTs that store and download results make creating them much easier. Being able to present clear, thorough data from tests helps build trust and makes the tradesman who does this look very professional.
For wholesalers who want to stock efficient MFTs to meet the demands of electricians looking to increase productivity,
the new ET6000 Series from Martindale Electric is a practical and reliable solution. The range includes the ET6000, ET6300 and ET6500, which cover a wide variety of essential testing tasks and can be used on anything from simple installations to complex jobs. Each model is designed to perform all the critical measurements required for verifying the electrical safety of installations, including high-current and non-trip earth loop impedance testing, voltage measurement, phase sequence indication, and Auto RCD testing.
No confusion
Each model has a full-colour TFT display that clearly shows connection information and test results so there is never any confusion during testing and electricians can focus on the task without secondguessing themselves. The testers all come with a ‘Test and Go’ carry case and there’s no need to take them out – the unit can stay in its case even while it’s being used, protecting it on-site and cutting down on set-up time.
The ET6000 is the entry-level model, ideal for electricians who want a reliable installation tester that covers all essential functions required by the 18th Edition Wiring
Regulations. As electric vehicles become more common, the demand for EV charger testing is growing so the ET6300 and ET6500 models are designed to help electricians stay prepared for the evolving requirements of electrical installations. The ET6300 model is EV-ready, making it a solid choice for those wanting to test electric vehicle charger points. Its accessory set includes stackable leads, the TL180 slimline test probe and a mains charger with rechargeable batteries. This model can also be upgraded at any time with the Martindale TL305EV adapter to enable EV testing capability. The flagship ET6500 model includes all the accessories of the ET6300 including the TL305EV adapter and has advanced features including an onboard memory for storing and downloading test results, great for electricians who need to generate compliance reports or manage large amounts of test data.
For anyone serious about saving time and boosting productivity, investing in an MFT is an obvious choice. These all-inone devices remove the hassle of juggling multiple tools, reduce on-site hours and deliver spot-on accuracy. It doesn’t matter whether the task is a complex installation or a routine check, an MFT makes the job easier, faster and more professional. With the right MFT to hand, electricians will be ready to handle whatever is thrown their way.

ON CAMERA
As technology advances, thermal imaging cameras are becoming an essential and more affordable product for electrical contractors, says Will Jing of HIKMICRO.
Thermal imaging cameras have seen remarkable advances in recent years, becoming far more accessible to the everyday electrician. Recent technological improvements mean prices have come down and thermal imaging has become a viable option for most electrical contractors allowing, electricians to invest in these powerful tools without breaking the bank, improving the service they offer.
Thermal imaging cameras work by detecting infrared radiation (heat) and then providing a visual picture of this heat across surfaces. Using a thermal imaging camera makes it easy to identify electrical faults or spot potential issues that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as overheating components, without opening up panels, cutting into walls or floors – or causing any disruption at all. For wholesalers, stocking thermal imaging cameras is a smart way to tap into the growing demand for this technology, staying ahead of the curve in an evolving market.
Identifying problems early
There are some great benefits to using a thermal camera. One of these is the ability to spot a problem before it escalates. All
electrical systems generate heat during normal operation, but when components such as circuit breakers, connections or fuses start to overheat, it can be a sign there are loose connections, overloading or even imminent equipment failure. By using a thermal camera to carry out regular scans of electrical systems, electricians will quickly detect abnormal hot spots that could lead to bigger problems down the line.
By identifying these issues early, electricians can offer preventive maintenance which reduces the risk of breakdowns, improves system reliability and ultimately extends the lifespan of electrical equipment. This proactive approach also helps minimise downtime, particularly in industrial or commercial settings where unscheduled outages can be costly.
Another benefit of thermal imaging cameras is the reduced time it takes to diagnose electrical issues. Traditional methods often involve trial and error and
can be time consuming and inefficient. Thermal imaging cameras on the other hand, give immediate visual feedback. For example, if an electrical panel is malfunctioning, a quick scan with a thermal camera can instantly pinpoint the overheated component so the electrician immediately knows what the problem is and can focus on the right area. There’s no need for lengthy investigations so it saves both time and money on labour and the quick turnaround for clients leads to better service and potentially increased business.
Energy efficiency
With energy efficiency at the top of the list of concerns for homeowners and businesses alike, electricians are getting more calls to help cut down on energy waste. Thermal imaging cameras are a great tool for the job, letting electricians scan electrical systems to spot heat loss or stressed components – usually signs that something’s burning through more energy than it should.
Armed with this information, electricians can suggest fixes like swapping out inefficient parts or rebalancing loads, helping clients save on bills and lower their carbon footprint. It’s a win-win for anyone aiming to be more sustainable and keep costs down. Plus, for electricians, offering this kind of service can be a real differentiator and bring in extra business.
HIKMICRO has developed a range of thermal imaging cameras that are well suited to the needs of electricians and electrical contractors. Its latest models, the Mini2 V2 and Mini2 Plus V2, make good cost effective and portable solutions for on-the-go inspections as they turn smartphones into powerful thermal diagnostic tools by attaching directly to Android and iOS devices. The Mini2 series has a 256 x 192 pixel resolution and uses SuperIR image enhancement technology to deliver sharp and detailed visuals. These devices have two lens options available: a focus-free wide-angle for larger areas and a manual focus lens for close-up
inspections of circuits and other small components making them flexible enough for electricians scanning large installations or troubleshooting smaller issues.
Put it in your pocket
For those looking for a standalone option, HIKMICRO’s Eco Series and Pocket E models are designed with electricians in mind. The user-friendly Eco Series automatically tracks temperature irregularities and has a built-in laser pointer to highlight problem areas quickly. These
features make it ideal for both new and experienced electricians. The portable Pocket E model is designed to fit comfortably into a pocket so it’s always onhand during inspections. Despite its compact size, it has a 3.5-inch touchscreen for easy viewing and uses SuperIR technology to ensure crisp, high-contrast images.
Thermal imaging cameras are no longer specialist tools – they have become an essential part of an electrician’s toolkit. With their ability to identify faults early, streamline diagnostics and improve energy efficiency, these devices offer significant value to both electricians and their clients. The increased affordability and versatility of thermal cameras mean that they are now within reach of even smaller contractors, making them a must-stock product for wholesalers looking to cater to modern electrical professionals.
POWERING THE FUTURE
As the UK accelerates its drive toward Net Zero emissions, modern homes are becoming testbeds for advanced green technologies. A new wave of homes is emerging, integrating solar photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles, battery storage and thermal storage of heat and water. These technologies help households reduce both their bills and carbon footprints, offering a glimpse into the future of energy efficient living. This shift is creating opportunities for electrical wholesalers to offer the cutting-edge solutions that make these homes much more efficient.
In today’s energy landscape there are a huge number of renewable sources generating electricity day and night; powering homes, charging electric vehicles (EVs) and storing excess energy in batteries for later use. Helping to balance the grid through these changes, thermal storage technologies like the Dimplex Quantum high heat retention (HHR) system offer an efficient way to store low cost, off-peak electricity as heat. By doing so, the Quantum system provides warmth throughout the day without the high costs associated with peaktime energy consumption. With its ability to avoid peak prices and shift one of the largest energy profiles in the home, this technology helps households operate more efficiently, reducing strain on the national grid while lowering costs and emissions.
Navigating energy saving claims: Wholesalers must be informed With the growing demand for green technology, there is a rising concern about mis-selling energy solutions. It's critical to verify the energy savings of any system before recommending it to customers. Misleading quotes can result in inflated bills, undermining the potential savings and environmental benefits. The only independent and verifiable savings come from solutions recognised in SAP for reducing a dwelling’s EPC rating.
Many direct electric solutions make claims about running cost reductions; however, the fact is that there is just one category in SAP covering all these products, with no recognised difference in their performance. With electric heating being 100% efficient at the point of use and control accuracy all but standardised by LOT 20, the only way to significantly reduce running costs is to use cheaper electricity. For wholesalers, ensuring that the products they stock deliver on these promises is vital for customer satisfaction and repeat business.
Because they can store energy when it’s cheap and use it when it’s needed, High Heat Retention (HHR) heaters do have a separate recognition in SAP, and so can improve the EPC of a property. Dimplex Quantum systems, for example, were able to prove that they are up to 27%
Shaun Hurworth from Dimplex discusses how the integration of green technologies is reshaping modern homes and how systems like the Dimplex Quantum HHR storage heater can be a cornerstone of this transition. By intelligently managing energy use and working seamlessly with national renewable sources, these systems are setting a new standard for efficient, sustainable living.
cheaper to run than standard storage heaters and up to 47% cheaper than electric convector and radiator systems. These figures highlight the importance of selecting reliable technology that delivers on its promises, safeguarding both resident bills and the environment. If you’re being told a range enables significant savings, confirm this by checking the impact it will have on the EPC before recommending it.
A new era of smart tariffs
Furthering the benefits of storing up offpeak energy to be used on demand throughout the day, Dimplex has partnered with British Gas to launch the British Gas Dimplex Quantum Tariff, the UK’s most advanced electric storage heating tariff for use with Dimplex Quantum storage heaters.
The British Gas Dimplex Quantum Tariff is a first-of-its-kind smart tariff. It can offer
lower rates than typical Economy 7 tariffs thanks to the heaters’ capability to charge when electricity costs are lowest on the grid. This will be delivered through 100% renewable electricity and with prices fixed for 12 months.
Designed, developed and manufactured in the UK, the Quantum heaters intelligently communicate with British Gas, which charges them up with low cost electricity when it’s available on the grid. This cheap electricity can be intelligently stored as heat, which not only helps consumers to lower their bills but can also provide flexibility to the UK’s energy system as we continue to decarbonise our national energy infrastructure and transition towards Net Zero.
Future-proofing homes with green technology integration
Modern electric homes are increasingly designed to integrate a range of green technologies. Combining solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, EV charging stations, battery storage and thermal
storage based on a property’s budget, space and occupancy can create a balanced and energy efficient ecosystem. This integrated approach allows homes to run on locally and nationally generated renewable energy when generation is available. The result is lower energy bills, a smaller carbon footprint and enhanced energy security. Installers must be aware of how combining these technologies can optimise a home's energy use.
With the UK's goal to phase out fossil fuel heating systems by 2035, the integration of electric heating and storage solutions like Dimplex Quantum will be critical for electricians looking to make recommendations for energy efficient homes of the future.
Opportunities for electrical wholesalers
For electrical wholesalers, this green revolution represents a significant business opportunity. Stocking products like PV panels, EV chargers, battery storage and HHR systems puts wholesalers at the forefront of this
transformation. To stay competitive, they must not only offer these products but also provide the necessary training and support for their customers.
Training provided by manufacturers like Dimplex is crucial. Wholesalers must help their customers make informed decisions, ensuring that these systems are installed correctly and perform as promised.
Building a sustainable future
The push for greener energy solutions is shaping the homes of the future. For wholesalers, embracing and promoting integrated green technologies will be key to staying ahead in an evolving market. Systems like the Dimplex Quantum, combined with smart tariffs, are paving the way for more energy efficient, cost effective homes, making the most of renewable energy and ensuring a sustainable future for both businesses and consumers.

LET IT SHINE
Off-grid, renewable energy specialist Kathryn Adams, Commercial Director, Prolectric, dispels a few common misconceptions around solar street lighting.
As the colder months descend, the gritters are on standby and specialist teams up and down the country focus their efforts on winter maintenance. Cold weather service plans are underway to mitigate equipment downtime; avoiding costly repairs to optimise the performance of assets remains a priority. Dogged by months of inclement weather and shorter daylight hours, the need for reliable street lighting in UK modern infrastructure cannot be understated.
Private and public exterior lighting in the UK places a significant draw on the national electrical power grid with over seven million public street lights, used each year. Traditional lighting is expensive to install and run, and a significant contributor to the country’s total carbon emissions. In terms of simple running costs, according to a State of the Nation report on street lighting, annual expenditure on electricity could reach £379m by 2030 for the UK’s mains-powered streetlights.
The carbon emissions from traditional lighting comes from the generation of electricity to power the lights, together with the embedded carbon generated by
Ain’t no sunshine
When it comes to the widescale adoption and deployment of solar street lighting solutions, a range of misconceptions cast a shadow over the effectiveness and viability of this game-changing technology.
One of the most common myths is that solar power becomes less efficient during winter and is most effective in summer when the sun is out. Wintertime can be harsh on outdoor equipment, but contrary to popular belief, solar panels are designed to work efficiently, even in colder climates – and often are more efficient at converting sunlight into electricity when operating in cooler temperatures.
While shorter daylight hours might slightly affect the overall energy generation, advancements in solar technology, such as improved panel efficiency and energy storage systems, have significantly minimised this impact. Even on overcast days solar panels can still capture diffuse sunlight by efficiently converting it into usable energy, allowing customers to effectively harness solar power in low-light conditions.
To date, Prolectric has provided over 10,000 solar streetlights across the UK. Brightening up car parks, walkways and streets, round the clock, 365 days a year, its solar technology is engineered to work in the harshest of UK winters, where cloudy days make up 43% of the year.
The first permanent solar street lighting was installed in the UK by Prolectric, in 2011. Since then, solar street lighting has proven itself to be reliable, durable and effective. The lights are designed for the
UK weather and manufactured in a facility near Bristol. Installation costs are around
while running costs are negligible and operational carbon emissions are zero.
However, the market has been recently been flooded with cheap, unsuitable lights that simply do not deliver their claimed performance and reliability in British winters. This poses a challenge for everyone from facilities managers and property developers, to local authorities and large commercial estates, in understanding how to choose a solar streetlight that will deliver on its promises.
Leave a light on
Solar lighting has come a long way from its early days. Thanks to technological advancements, solar-powered lighting systems are now equipped with highefficiency LED lights and sensors that provide bright and effective lighting. The energy generated from the sun during the day is stored in batteries, allowing them to shine throughout the night. Prolectric’s specially developed smart light controller and Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensor work to ensure the solar LED light lasts from dusk until dawn, even on dark days, and throughout the UK winter.
The very latest development is creating lights with 3 PIR which now ensures movement is picked up from an even greater distance and radius. Solar lights offer a reliable and eco-friendly solution without compromising on brightness, whether installed in car parks, pathways, campuses or parks. And when used across large commercial properties, operational carbon emissions can be significantly reduced.
See the light
Solar streetlights and bollards are simple, quick and economical to install. With no manpower required to dig trenches or install trunking for cables, labour costs and carbon footprints are significantly reduced. Installation time is minimal compared to conventional mains power alternatives which decreases the disruption to road users and the impact on traffic. It can also help to cut down construction project schedules and with reduced contractor presence, onsite safety and security is also enhanced. A recent project for a large MOD contractor saved them over £300,000 on trenching and cabling alone and took away months of disruption and contractors onsite.
Reducing the reliance on grid energy, unlike EV charging units and stations that stretch the grid capacity; solar streetlights and bollards are low maintenance, with no need for PAT testing, and have a long operating life. There is no need to change the whole unit when one element comes
to the end of its life; instead, the single component can be replaced, again reducing embodied carbon and waste.
Solar systems are often perceived as high-maintenance due to concerns about cleaning panels and maintaining batteries. However, modern solar panels are designed with self-cleaning technology. Battery maintenance is also minimal, with many solar systems featuring smart battery management systems that require little to no manual intervention. Routine checks and occasional cleaning are usually sufficient to keep a solar system running smoothly year-round.
Dark night, bright future
When it comes to solar lighting, both temporary and permanent solutions, Prolectric has been championing quieter, safer and more environmentally friendly sites for over a decade, as the first to introduce solar street lighting to the UK. Game-changing solar technology provides a practical way for businesses to achieve
their carbon-reduction commitments, enabling them to move away from fossilfuelled or mains powered systems.
Prolectric solar street lights reduce installation costs with no need for trenching, cabling, external power or a DNO connection, halving upfront costs and eliminating ongoing costs. An extensive array of motion detection capabilities and a range of Prolectric solar bollards further compliment the high power solar street light offering with the latest solar LED technology.
When the nights draw in, it’s cold and dark and summer feels like a very distant memory – we can rest safe in the knowledge that year-round solar power and lighting is a feasible, practical and reliable option, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
FOLLOWING PROTOCOL
Digital addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) technology might sound complex, but it’s basically a two way communications protocol that simplifies the control of lighting in buildings.
Unlike traditional systems where each light requires a specific control circuit (switched return/strappers), DALI allows lights to receive commands for switching, dimming, and colour change through a single 2-wire bus system. This bus system, known as the DALI bus, is easy to install and can be straightforward to set up, eliminating the complexity often associated with other lighting systems.
Why DALI?
The advent of DALI was primarily driven by the need to handle the heavy loads and potential overloads caused by
Paul
Foulkes and Simon Johnson of Theben Automation offer advice on mastering DALI for advanced lighting control –useful in commercial buildings and industrial settings.
electronic ballasts used in modern lighting systems, particularly in commercial environments. With DALI, each luminaire operates independently with power coming from a common 230 V line, while commands such as switching, dimming, and colour changing are transmitted through the DALI bus.
This not only reduces the strain on physical relays but also significantly diminishes issues like flickering and afterglow in dimmable LEDs. It also allows for grouping of lights for specific rooms or spaces within a room, which are able to be changed without moving hardware or physical re-wiring.
What’s the difference between DALI and DALI-2?
DALI originated in the late 1990s and was defined in IEC60929. The current (2020) version of DALI is called DALI-2. DALI version-1 only included control devices for the luminaires (control gear). DALI-2 includes other products, such as application controllers and input devices like presence detectors, as well as bus power supplies, which were not included in DALI version-1. For electricians this means one line for lighting, emergency, switches and sensors.
Grouping possibilities
With a DALI system, you have the option of assigning fixtures, accessories, controllers and input devices to groups by giving them
designated “addresses”. Each address can be assigned to several groups in order to provide the specific lighting level in a room and/or zone at any time of the day.
In addition to these groups, you can also use scenes. These are defined lighting outputs that, for instance, are applied with a single switch on a wall of a room or via commands from a building management system or presence detector.
Simple
installation
A DALI system offers possibilities for a very extensive (and brand-independent with DALI-2) lighting plan, with only one restriction: there’s a maximum number of components that can be connected per DALI line. DALI-2 allows for 128 addresses, of which 64 are fixtures/DALI controls (control gear) and 64 are DALI2 controls (control devices).
The lighting control dream team
Perfect light management can also be achieved with a
higher-level control solution using a Building Management System and presence sensors. As an input device, the presence sensor provides information regarding presence detection and lux level measurements.
The higher-level control system is responsible for providing all the functions, such as local and remote switching, constant lighting control, fully/semi-automatic (presence/absence) switching, manual override and scenes. The presence sensors also support remote control commands for dimming or switching lamps, controlling blinds and HVAC, or other functions. Theben offers a wide range of DALI-2 presence sensors for nearly any need. They create efficient, flexible and future-proof lighting management, which can be seamlessly integrated into building automation systems.
The presence sensors can send the information via the
DALI-2 bus to the higherlevel control system, as per IEC 62386 part 301. Using the information, it can trigger desired actions. In addition, a compact DALI-2 push button interface and a powerful DALI-2 switch actuator can be integrated into the Building Management System.
Conclusion
DALI lighting technology offers significant advantages for modern electrical installations, providing flexibility, ease of use, and enhanced control over lighting environments. As the industry evolves, staying up-to-date with such technologies will be crucial for electricians looking to expand their expertise and service offerings. By understanding and implementing DALI, professionals can ensure efficient, compliant, and forward-thinking lighting solutions for their customers.

TIMEGUARD SMART WALL SWITCH
Timeguard’s new smart wall switch is a simple, direct two-wire replacement for a standard switch that really does eliminate the flickering that can be a problem when controlling LED lighting with smart switches.
This is because the power is routed through an internal battery, rather than capacitors. The small mains current that has to be maintained to power the switch itself is absorbed by a trickle-charging battery, which can hold on to it unlike the capacitors used in earlier design concepts. The mains supply is therefore effectively isolated from the switching controls and cannot cause flickering with even the lowest-power LEDs.
The ZV700 offers all the automatic time control options you would expect from Timeguard, including timed and photocell control, as well as acting as a normal switch.

Fergus founder Dan Pollard highlights the issue of mental health in the workplace and offers some tips on how tradespeople can support each other’s wellbeing as well as their own.
At Fergus we are calling for greater attention to mental health in the workplace. Fergus believes that efficient workload management and transparent communication are key factors in reducing stress and anxiety, both of which are often precursors to mental health issues. This year, Fergus has been using its platform to highlight
“ Job management isn't just about efficiency; it's about ensuring that teams are not overwhelmed.”
how job management tools can contribute to creating healthier, more supportive work environments.
World Suicide Prevention Day, held every year on September 10th, aims to raise awareness about suicide and the steps that can be taken to reduce its occurrence globally. While the conversation about mental health has gained momentum in recent years, workplaces continue to be a significant source of stress for many individuals.
At Fergus, we understand that the pressures of work can take a toll on mental health. We’re committed not only to helping businesses manage their operations more efficiently but also to creating environments where employees feel supported, reducing the risks of burnout and mental strain.
A constant state of urgency
The physical exhaustion and chronic pain associated with physically demanding work also affects mental wellbeing and we need to be talking about it. Time pressures add another layer of stress, as tradespeople often find themselves meeting tight deadlines and managing emergency callouts, which makes them feel like they are living in a constant state of urgency. Those that own their own business or
“ We’re committed not only to helping businesses manage their operations more efficiently but also to creating environments where employees feel supported.””
are sole traders have the added stress of keeping admin at bay, cash flowing and jobs coming in, so it’s just a pipe ready to burst without an outlet.
Fergus’s job management software offers solutions that address some of the key stressors in the workplace. Features such as efficient workload distribution, clear task tracking and enhanced communication tools help alleviate anxiety, foster transparency and prevent feelings of isolation among employees. By automating and streamlining processes, Fergus enables teams to maintain a healthier work-life balance.
Job management isn't just about efficiency; it's about ensuring that teams are not overwhelmed and that communication is clear and consistent. These are essential for creating a mentally healthy workplace.
Healthier work environments
Fergus is encouraging businesses across the UK to prioritise mental health by utilising job management software to create safer, healthier work environments. The company is also exploring partnerships with mental health organisations to provide direct access to professional resources through its platform. Integrating features like mental health break reminders, anonymous feedback tools and easy access to counselling services can further promote a supportive culture within organisations.
Fergus has come up with a few suggestions on how tradespeople –and their mates – can better look after their mental health.
TIP 1:
Speak up, mate
Here’s a hard fact: according to Mates in Construction, construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work. Don’t bottle it up. If something’s weighing you down, don’t keep it to yourself.
TIP 2:
Keep an eye out for your mates
Safety is teamwork, and so is mental wellbeing. If you see a mate struggling, don’t turn a blind eye. Asking a simple “You alright?” can be the first step in making a big difference.
TIP 3:
Limit alcohol and substance use
We all enjoy a cold one, but moderation is key and a clear mind is better than a foggy buzz. Try swapping out a beer for a book or a movie night with friends or family. If you are really struggling to steer away from alcohol in a social setting, give a zero-alcohol option a go.
TIP 4:
Take a break
We often think pushing through the pain is the answer, but that’s a quick ticket to burnout city. We all need a breather, whether it’s a weekend off or even a longer break, and stepping away gives your mind a chance to reset.
TIP 5:
Get physical and eat right
After a long day, the last thing you want to do is exercise. But physical activity releases endorphins, your body’s natural mood lifters. Even a simple 30-minute walk after work can help clear your head. It’s tempting to grab fast food for lunch, but your body - and mind - need better fuel. Poor diet contributes to poor mental health, and a balanced meal with fruits, veggies and lean protein can boost your mood and energy.
