TWISTING AND TUCKING

As we arrive in September it feels like a return to normal life after a summer dominated by Euro 2024, the Olympics and the general election, which I will come back to later. The sport was obviously lots of fun as I quickly learned (and just as quickly forgot again) all about ‘kickflips’ and ‘lipslides’ (skateboarding), ‘twists’ and ‘tucks’ (diving) and ‘carving’ and ‘cutbacks’ (surfing). And it was of course fantastic to see Team GB bring home so many medals.

Earlier this year it was claimed by organisers that the Paris Olympics would be the ‘greenest ever games’ as they aimed to use existing or temporary venues for most events and focusing on low carbon building for the rest. The statistics will hopefully reveal in due course just how successful the event has been in terms of sustainability, but it’s important that huge global events like this set an example in reducing our carbon footprint, as the technology used in large sporting arenas can also be used in our homes and everyday workplaces.

Two of our special features this month, Lighting and Home Automation, are key industries in the UK’s aim to achieve its sustainability targets. An increasing shift towards LED lighting is helping to improve the UK’s position in its aim to meet its Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 target, and it is becoming widely acknowledged that lighting – and lighting controls –will play a significant role in a new, modern built environment.

In this issue we not only have articles focusing on the latest products from some of the industry’s leading brands, you can also discover how wholesalers can work with their suppliers to offer LED upgrade kits to their customers. On page 26, Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey explains the role of the wholesaler as the key link between customer and manufacturer and why supporting remanufacture and upgrade solutions will ensure wholesalers do not lose out as the increased focus on sustainability and Net Zero emissions drives growth in this sector.

On a final note, the general election brought with it all the usual empty promises, soundbites, media hysteria and mudslinging we’ve come to expect but we’re now through all of that, for now at least, a new Government is in place and Sir Keir Starmer is our new Prime Minister. Number 10 Downing Street became a virtual revolving door during the last administration, which did very little to help further initiatives in dealing with matters such as climate change. At the moment an era of government stability I think will be welcomed by all.

But for anyone who’s keen for a bit more political excitement…..if you can call it that… ..the US presidential election is just around the corner!...‘Sigh’….

EDATA DATA POOL UPGRADE DELIVERS BUSINESS ADVANTAGE FOR WHOLESALERS

Wholesalers rely on easy access to up-to-date manufacturer product information and the EDATA data pool’s latest technical upgrade has introduced a bespoke suite of APIs (Application Programming Interface) to create automatic links with other business-critical systems and e-commerce websites.

Wholesaler members of the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) already benefit from free access to the EDATA data pool portal containing information on over 270,000 products. Wholesalers use the information in a variety of ways to improve business performance: filter and search to resolve technical queries at the trade counter, generate product data

sheets on demand to support quotes, bids and tender submissions, to create operation & maintenance manuals, and bulk downloads for e-commerce or to feed other business systems.

Fantastic resource

Richard Appleton, Head of Digitalisation at the EDA, explained why this latest development is so important: “The EDATA data pool is a fantastic resource full of high-quality product information and images on hundreds of thousands of products, but this data is even more valuable when integrated with wholesalers’ existing business systems to drive even more efficient working process and in doing so improve their service to customers.

“Our latest API development brings the next generation of automation to wholesaler businesses. Automated updates from EDATA are available in a variety of combinations all designed around what wholesalers need. For example, wholesalers may want to automate updates from specific manufacturers only, or for particular product ranges, or they may want everything that’s in EDATA.

“EDA member wholesalers are introducing us to their software providers and web support teams who’ll create system links. The EDATA team is here to support the process with technical know-how. We’ve created detailed user guides and, of course, there is absolutely no cost involved in this upgrade.”

LUCECO LAUNCHES EPORTAL FOR WHOLESALERS

In its latest step towards an ever more seamless and straightforward customer experience, Luceco Group has launched an online ordering portal for wholesalers and independent retailers.

Called the ePortal, it provides easy self-service ordering across the full Luceco product portfolio, enabling customers to review all brands through one site, check stock availability and purchase quickly. Created for wholesaler/independent resellers, this new ‘all in one’ ordering site allows account customers to check stock availability of any Luceco, BG, MP or D-Line product, see their unique dedicated pricing and place orders at any time of day or night.

ePortal was designed with the customer at the forefront; the aim being to give customers an alternative to phoning in orders and a broader range of information at their fingertips to support any ordering or tenders, where up-to-date, accessible information is critical.

“Ability to view the full range of lighting, wiring accessories, portable power and cable accessories within one site is hugely beneficial to customers and having all the relevant information to hand makes life much less stressful; from product availability and dedicated price file to detailed product specifications and downloadable datasheets,” said Lyndsey Martin, Head of Operations.

The ePortal is open to existing account customers, but wholesalers and independent retailers who do not currently have an account can register for ePortal access. Wholesalers and independent retailers can view and sign up to the new service via: https://eportal.luceco.com/.

FACE TO FACE ELTA GROUP

In this month’s Face to Face David Millward, Product Manager at Elta Group, discusses the rising demand for indoor air solutions, the latest ventilation trends, and how electrical wholesalers can become part of this evolving market.

QFirstly, can you give us a bit of background on Elta Trade?

A. Absolutely. Elta Trade was established as an avenue to specifically cater to the trade market, drawing on the rich history and expertise of the Elta Group. With over 50 years of experience in air quality solutions, Elta Trade leverages this heritage to provide top-tier products and services to electrical wholesalers.

Our aim is to deliver the same reliability and innovation that Elta is known for in the commercial and industrial sectors, now tailored for the domestic market through our dedicated distribution channels.

QSpeaking of commercial and domestic markets, what ventilation trends are you seeing in those areas?

A. The latest trends in ventilation focus on efficient heat recovery units and the overall benefits of improved air movement. There's growing awareness about the dangers of stagnant air and the development of mould. Elta Trade offers multiple solutions to address these issues.

In residential settings, Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery, or otherwise known as MVHR, systems are popular, especially in new buildings where ductwork can be planned during construction. For existing buildings, decentralised systems and single room heat recovery units offer solid alternatives. These systems ensure continuous air supply and extraction without the need for extensive ductwork.

QYou mentioned heat recovery units. How do heat recovery units work, and what applications are they best suited to?

A. Heat recovery units are designed to replace stale indoor air with new, filtered air while maintaining the desired temperature within a space. These units work by transferring heat from the outgoing stale air to the incoming new air, thereby recovering thermal energy. A typical MVHR system includes a supply air fan and an extract air fan with a heat exchanger.

The system pre-warms incoming air in the winter and pre-cools it in the summer, reducing the energy required for heating or cooling. MVHR systems are versatile, suitable for both residential properties and commercial applications such as schools and offices.

QAlong with heating and cooling, the need for better air quality seems to be driving demand. Why do you think that is?

A. Air quality has had a huge spotlight shined on it in the past few years. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in public awareness about indoor air quality. Media attention and the pandemic have heightened discussions around home ventilation systems, making them as commonplace as conversations about other home improvements like new windows or fresh paint. This increased awareness, coupled with regulatory reforms and the Future Homes Standard, is driving demand for Mechanical Extract Ventilation systems and Positive Input Ventilation systems, commonly known as MEV and PIV systems respectively.

Homeowners and professionals alike are becoming more conscious of the importance of good air quality and the responsibilities that come with it.

“ Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in public awareness about indoor air quality”

QIf wholesalers want to take advantage of these markets demands, what advice can you give them?

A. The best thing they can do is understand what solutions are needed and working with a manufacturer who can supply not only the equipment but also the expertise needed to discuss their features with potential buyers. Becoming an Elta Trade stockist is straightforward and begins with a conversation. We believe in providing good air quality and have been manufacturing quality products for five decades.

The support we offer our stockists includes the wealth of knowledge and experience we’ve accumulated over the years. We understand that our stockists'

“ The support we offer our stockists includes the wealth of knowledge and experience we’ve accumulated over the years.”

success hinges on the support and service we provide. Interested wholesalers can reach out to us for an open discussion about how to get started.

QAnd finally, when you look ahead to the next 12 months, what is Elta Trade hoping to achieve?

A. Our primary objective is to strengthen our distribution channels and establish Elta Trade as a reliable brand within the domestic sector, similar to our strong reputation in the commercial and industrial

markets. We aim to enhance market awareness about our quality solutions and the benefits they bring, ensuring that our products continue to meet the evolving needs of our customers. Through strategic partnerships and continued innovation, we are committed to delivering superior air quality solutions that set industry standards and fulfils our mantra of ‘Air Movement, Air Quality.’

CABIN CREW

Afarmer for most of his adult life in rural Staffordshire, Bob Holmes was looking to diversify his business operations and made the decision to put some of the 270 acres of land that he used for bull rearing and arable farming to an alternative use. Having turned a pond on his land into a huge lake filled with trout and carp a few years ago, this seemed the perfect location for some holiday cabins.

Bespoke spaces

What started out as one holiday cabin, quickly became two and will soon be five luxury, bespoke, hand-built waterfront cabins with each one occupying its own tranquil space overlooking the vast lake, boasting a high specification interior and featuring a separate outdoor freestanding bath tub.

PEW hears how products and solutions from Scolmore Group have been used in a collection of luxury waterfront cabins in Staffordshire.

Aiming to create bespoke, luxury cabins with a difference, the owner wanted to offer smart home technologies which would capture energy efficiencies in their operation and application. A priority was the ability to plan around bookings to ensure that lighting and heating were on upon guests’ arrival and that there was controllability of heating on demand - with remote control and access to systems where guests may have difficulty, an important consideration.

This required the need to overcome any issues that arose due to the cabins’ remote, off grid location, with connectivity and smart home tech needing to operate

over a standalone 4G network. The solution was found in Scolmore’s Click Smart+ range of smart home products recommended by the professional installer already involved in work at the farm, Martyn Walley, Managing Director of electrical contracting firm Hide Ltd.

Martyn commented: “The Click Smart+ range is designed to simplify and streamline connected home products –lighting controls, smart sockets, smart switches, security cameras and sensors. It utilises Zigbee technology – one of the most widely adopted smart home communication protocols. Zigbee certified devices require the Click Smart+ Hub and communicate with each other using a mesh network which creates multiple pathways for the connection of multiple smart home devices without compromising signal and communication range.

“I have worked with the ClickSmart+ range on numerous projects and can testify for its ease of use and the wide range of applications it can be utilised for. It is designed to bring convenience, comfort, security, energy saving and ultimately more control in the home and workplace. Installation is simple and flexible, with no additional cables or wall cutting required, making it ideal for existing or newly constructed buildings.

Martyn has used various products from Click Smart+ and these include:

● 10A 1 gang smart switching receiver and the 150W 1 gang smart switching receiver to remotely control all the interior and exterior lighting

● Smart fused connection unit (FCU) to control the immersion heaters

● Smart window and door sensor which is being used to control heating for energy efficiency but can also be used for security

● Smart temperature and humidity sensor for controlling temperature and energy efficiency.

Additional solutions

Other products from across the Scolmore Group that were specified and installed by Martyn include a consumer unit from the Click Elucian range. He continued: “The Elucian range was designed with the installer in mind and offers an extensive range of metal consumer units that cover a broad range of installations with a number of features and benefits that will enhance the products’ convenience, flexibility and safety properties.”

Martin chose the 12-way metal consumer unit that comes furnished with a 100A mains switch supplied with a surge protection device along with RCBOs providing individual circuit protection within the lodges.

The Click Aquip66 range of weatherproof sockets, light switches and switch enclosures provided the solution for all outdoor electrical requirements such as the outdoor bathhouse and boiler room. Products installed included:

● Click Aquip 13A socket outlet on the lodge porch/veranda area

● Click Aquip weatherproof light switch in the external boiler room and bathhouse area

● Click Aquip 1 gang enclosure within the bathhouse to house the ClickSmart+ Fused Connection Unit controlling the hot water

The Aquip66 range is designed to offer a high level of protection against ingress of water jets and dust and all products in the

range come as completely sealed units. They offer a number of features and benefits. They are IP66-rated, have a robust polycarbonate construction, and offer high impact resistance and UV protection against fading. The flexible rubber base allows for mounting on most types of uneven surfaces.

From another Scolmore Group company, Unicrimp, and providing vital protection from any incidence of electrical surge is the Unicrimp earth rod or earth electrodes. These conductive metal poles are buried directly into the ground and connected to the Earth circuit of an electrical installation. If there is a fault, they provide a low resistance path that allows electricity to safely dissipate out into the ground.

Finishing touches

Commenting on the luxury cabins project, owner Bob Holmes said: “We were very lucky to have local electrical contractor Martyn working on the job. He really understood the requirements of this particular project with its remote location and desire to offer clients a bespoke and different experience and that’s where the

smart solutions came in. Martyn led us with the choice of products to meet the brief. He is very tech savvy and the Click Smart+ products he recommended and installed are first class, I can’t fault them.”

With three of the luxury lakeside cabins now fully operational and welcoming visitors, work is continuing to complete the remaining properties which will be finished in the next six months. As well as bespoke interiors of the highest specification, these original oak framed holiday cabins offer visitors a stunning lake view, private patio or balcony, dedicated work space, fully fitted kitchen, king sized bed and private ensuite bathroom, and a separate outdoor freestanding bath tub. There is free parking available on the premises, with an EV charger installed, and guests will have private access to their orchard garden to the left of their cabin and will be able to walk along the tracks on the farm enjoying beautiful countryside walks.

STEEL PROTECTION

PEW takes a look at the comfort and safety provided by Carhartt’s new Steel Pants range.

In the construction industry, where bending, lifting and crawling are daily routines, knee pain and discomfort are all too common. Workers often endure this pain for months or even years, mistakenly hoping it will simply go away. Unfortunately, the demands of construction work can make these problems worse, leading to a cycle of ongoing pain and difficulty.

Knee pain is particularly prevalent because of the repetitive and strenuous activities involved, such as kneeling, squatting and carrying heavy materials. Even everyday actions like climbing ladders or standing for long periods can put extra strain on the knees. Working on hard surfaces and in awkward positions adds to the risk, leading to swelling, stiffness and discomfort, especially when bending or straightening the knee.

If knee pain isn't properly managed, it can worsen over time, making it harder to perform daily tasks and increasing the risk of further injury. It's crucial for those in the

construction industry to take steps to protect their knees. This can include training on proper positioning during tasks, using ergonomic mats, and incorporating regular stretching exercises to maintain flexibility and strength.

Knee protection is also essential. Without proper gear like knee pads, workers are at a higher risk of developing knee problems. That's why it's vital for construction workers to have access to protective equipment that offers cushioning and support to help prevent these issues.

Addressing knee pain directly

Carhartt recognises the challenges faced by those in the trades and has introduced a new range of Steel Rugged Flex Work Pants designed to address knee pain directly. These pants feature certified Flex Cordura fabric knee pad pockets that meet safety standards, providing comfort and protection for workers. The pockets are designed to hold various knee pads,

“ The high incidence of knee pain in the construction industry highlights the need for appropriate protective measures”

offering crucial cushioning against hard surfaces and helping to maintain proper joint alignment, reducing the risk of injury.

These work trousers are not only protective but also tough and flexible, making them ideal for active work environments. Made from durable Ripstop fabric and incorporating Rugged Flex technology, they allow workers to move freely and perform physically demanding tasks without feeling restricted.

Enhanced mobility

The Steel Pants sit comfortably below the waist and have a straight leg opening that easily fits over work boots. The articulated knees and Rugged Flex Cordura fabric gusseted crotch ensure that the fabric doesn't tighten or restrict movement when

workers squat or stretch, enhancing mobility and reducing the risk of tearing. A Comfort flex waistband provides a snug yet flexible fit, supporting continuous movement and reducing discomfort during long working hours.

The high incidence of knee pain in the construction industry highlights the need for appropriate protective measures. Carhartt's workwear combines practical design with protective technology to enhance safety and support workers' wellbeing, helping to break the cycle of pain and discomfort on the job.

Sangamo’s new three-channel programmable thermostat with RF and Wi-Fi provides the means to operate and control separate heating zones within a residential property and in doing so increases efficiency and reduces energy use and utility costs. Easy installation and ease of programming and operation are at the heart of the new kit.

The Building Regulations which cover the energy performance of new and existing buildings have been subject to change in recent years with the approval of Part L (or Document L). Part L of the Building Regulations states that ‘for wet heating systems in new dwellings with a floor area of 150m2 or greater, a minimum of two independently controlled heating circuits should be provided’.

The new Sangamo Thermostat Kit is suitable for properties with two-zoned heating systems and is designed to help installers comply with the requirements of Part L Building Regulations where two-zoned heating is stipulated. The kit comprises two RF programmable room

thermostats to control heating over two zones and hot water programming, and one receiver complete with three independent channels – two for heating and one for hot water. The system can be programmed and controlled directly or remotely via the ClickSmart+ app.

Programming capabilities

One of the main features which supports the new programmable thermostat’s energy efficiency lies within the programming capabilities. When a call for heating or hot water is made, it requires it to be within a specific time and below a specific temperature. For example, the ON period would be between 0800 and 1130 hours if the temperature is below 19°C. Up to six on and off periods per day can be programmed.

Another key energy efficiency feature is the OWD (Open Window Detection) function. This is enabled in the parameter settings and uses sudden changes in temperature or humidity to detect if a window is open and switches off the heating until the

window is closed to save energy. Sangamo is keen to emphasise how easy it is to install the kit, as well as to programme and operate it. Thermostats can be wall mounted and are supplied with a wall-fixing mount and a free-standing base for table top positioning. The thermostats control the receiver via radio frequency, so there is no need for cable runs, and they can be powered either by replaceable batteries or USB-C power source.

The receiver features a large backlit display screen that ensures full visibility in any light conditions and the intuitive touch button interface makes for easy and complete control. The sleek white design ensures the kit will blend with any interior.

The winner of the June competition, sponsored by Ovia, was Reece Sully.

Lee Brodie, Technical Manager at Collingwood Lighting, explores how modern LED fittings are adaptable allowing you to offer the contractor and their customers more choice from less stock.

EMBRACING CHANGE

We all know that LED lighting will save energy; but the technology can offer far more than a reduced electricity bill. Some modern luminaires are adaptable, so you can offer contractors more options from the same fitting. Not only does this reduce your stock, but you can help the contractor add value for their customer by giving them more choice from their lighting and also the ability to change it in the future without replacing the fitting.

Excellent service starts with a good lighting design and a little bit of knowledge will help secure the sale for you and them. A good design will include ambient lighting for general background illumination, accent lighting to highlight areas of interest and add depth and task lighting to provide light for specific tasks.

It’s now easier than ever to design and install good lighting solutions and the good news is that you can offer the contractor what they need for such an installation from fewer fittings.

Changing colour temperature

Lighting serves many functions. At a basic level it allows us to see tasks and provides a safer environment, but it also creates an ambience depending on what you are using the area for. Colour adjustable LED fittings allow the contractor to change the correlated colour temperature (CCT) of the light output to suit their customer’s preferences without changing the lamp. It means that they can switch between warm

and cooler temperatures to create different moods to suit the room.

Taking our own H2 Deco downlight for illustration, there is a CCT switch behind the bezel that allows you to select one of four different colour temperatures; a very warm orange yellow light of 2200K, an extra warm white 2700K, a warm white 3000K or a natural white 4000K. While the choice of colour temperature is largely subjective, it does offer choice for both residential and commercial building owners.

In a house, for example, you or the contractor might suggest a warm white of 3000K for the ambient lighting in the lounge and for a bedroom an even warmer light of 2200K. For rooms that are more functional or task orientated, such as the kitchen or a home office, a cooler white of 4000K is better.

To really add value, the colour temperature can also help enhance different decoration schemes. A warmer light is great for highlighting wood bringing out its warmer undertones, whereas a homeowner might want something cooler for a white minimalist look.

Building owners or tenants may also want to change the colour temperature of accent lighting to highlight different features. Having a luminaire that you can easily switch gives you this adaptability. And if they want to change the decoration or function of the room in the future, then they can also switch the colour temperature of their lighting. For a really cosy atmosphere, some fittings even allow you to create a progressively warmer light as you dim it.

Brightness setting

Another variable depending on what room or space you are lighting is whether your customer needs more or less light. For commercial lighting this used to mean that you would either have to stock both single and twin fluorescent fittings or be ready to change the lamp in other fittings to one with a higher wattage.

Now instead of carrying extra stock to meet these different needs, some modern LED fittings will allow you to switch the wattage and alter the lumen output from the same fitting.

Altering the beam angle

The contractor will also need to direct the light where it is needed. Products with a wide beam angle of 45˚ or 50˚ will cover an area using fewer fittings to save time and money. For smaller spaces such as hallways and corridors you will need a narrower beam of 24˚. And for accent lighting, to highlight a feature you can narrow this further to 12˚ for a beam with a higher light intensity.

Plug in control and emergency kits

Turning to commercial lighting projects, many will need more control than simple on/off switching. To save energy, particularly in spaces that are not used all the time, such as corridors and toilets, presence sensors can make a big difference. Other options might include step dim sensors.

You will find that some LED fittings will have accessory kits available so that the luminaire can have such control simply plugged in. Similarly, there are conversion kits that allow the contractor to adapt a standard fitting into a manual or self-test emergency light.

LED strips

But nothing better illustrates how flexible LED lighting is than a strip light. This is a flexible tape that is a circuit board populated by surface mounted LEDs. It allows installers to create decorative lighting affects almost anywhere – under cabinets, shelves or along an alcove. They can even select different colour temperatures and they are easy to install since they can be cut to length or connected for longer runs.

LED lighting technology has opened up a host of different options for both residential and commercial applications. Better yet modern adaptable fittings allow you to offer the contractor and their customers more choice from less stock.

BRIGHT IDEAS

When it comes to supplying lighting, the choice of products, systems and technologies are extensive. From functionality to energy efficiency, interoperability and automation, the variety of factors and features to consider within a product range can seem overwhelming.

Whilst it can be confusing to know where to begin, there are several key factors that wholesalers should always address to ensure they provide the best solutions for their customers.

Product diversity

The first is product diversity; offering a wide array of lighting products that cater to different preferences and applications. From domestic LED bulbs and strip lights, to specialist emergency luminaires and commercial and industrial lamps, stocking a comprehensive selection of products will ensure customers can fulfil requirements on any residential, commercial or industrial project.

Functionality is a crucial consideration when it comes to supplying lighting. Wholesalers should prioritise understanding the factors that end users truly want and need.

Customisation

Customisation, particularly the ability to create personalised lighting scenes for different activities, moods and times of day, is in high demand. Whether it's setting up a cosy ambiance for movie nights at home or boosting productivity with bright, focused

lighting in office settings, users want to have the ability to curate their desired lighting environment effortlessly. Products that offer colour changing, dimmable, and tunable features alongside ease of use and responsiveness are all highly sought after, enhancing user experience while also providing flexibility and control.

Efficient and smart

As we focus on Net Zero and reducing our environmental impact, energy efficiency is another key consideration. LEDs are the prime solution to this challenge, offering around 80% energy savings and a longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting options. However, if there is one specific area, wholesalers should ensure they have an extensive smart lighting offering. Offering all of the features mentioned above and heightening their delivery, smart lighting is an advanced, automated system that gives users complete control over their lighting, enabling full customisation and optimum energy use.

From the timings of operation to the colour, brightness, intensity and combination of luminaires in use, every individual light fitting can be programmed and controlled to the most intricate detail. Smart lighting is also hugely energy efficient, with the potential to further cut the amount of energy used to light buildings by up to two-thirds. It simply ticks all of the required boxes!

In addition to wholly connected systems, accessories such as smart bulbs, strip lighting and smart plugs are also a key addition. Smart bulbs for example, can

With a vast array of different lighting products on the market, we hear from Ansell Lighting about the choices wholesalers should make when supplying lighting products, the legislation to be aware of and the LED lighting products transforming the lighting sector.

be installed in existing lamps and light fittings and linked together to form a fully automated and controllable lighting system whilst smart LED strips give installers the ability to add dynamic lighting effects and ambiance to any space. The benefits of smart plugs go beyond just lighting, giving connectivity to anything that is plugged into them. When developing a smart lighting or indeed any lighting product range, it is worth pointing out that wholesalers shouldn’t be afraid to lean on manufacturers for support. They can provide advice on the items that should be incorporated so that the offering is comprehensive and caters to the varying needs of residential, commercial and industrial projects.

Advice and support

They can also provide accurate advice on current lighting legislation – helping further with informed range formulation. LED Lighting has fast become the preferred lighting source for all of the reasons explained above whilst many older technologies are now being rapidly phased out. Close liaison with manufacturers will help wholesalers to ensure that they are always up-to-date with the latest regulations and product innovations, enabling them to offer the best possible solutions to customers.

ON THE UPGRADE

Nigel Harvey, Chief Executive at lighting WEEE compliance scheme Recolight, shines a light on the rapidly growing lighting upgrade sector.

An increasing number of public and private sector organisations are putting in place a range of sustainability requirements when they need to renew their lighting. And one of the fastest growing new requirements is for the upgrade or remanufacture of lighting products – instead of buying new. For those wholesalers and manufacturers that do not provide upgrade support, and only sell brand new product, this represents a very real risk. By definition, they are excluded wherever upgrade is requested. But for those who do pivot to offer such services, the rewards can be significant.

Why upgrade?

End users are increasingly considering upgrade or remanufacture as an alternative. In the drive to reduce carbon emissions and to hit Net Zero, the embodied carbon of an upgraded lighting product is typically less than half that of a new product. And in the race to put Net Zero buildings in place, that is a big saving. The drive to prioritise remanufacture over buying new is happening across multiple sectors: many larger companies, smaller and medium sized companies, and public sector organisations are putting in place policies that prioritise reuse over new.

The recent ban on many mercury containing fluorescent lamps means that many organisations are accelerating the move away from fluorescent to LED lighting. But to avoid wasting the whole luminaire, frequently in perfectly good condition, many are now requiring LED retrofit upgrades. This approach keeps the original light, its housing and mountings, and simply substitutes the fluorescent light source with an LED light source.

Who does the upgrade?

An increasing number of UK lighting companies are responding to the demand by setting up a UK based upgrade and remanufacturing operation to provide solutions for their own brand lighting. Where this is simply an upgrade from fluorescent to LED, this will typically involve the design of a new gear tray that can be easily installed in place of the

fluorescent tube and ballast.

But there are now other lighting companies that also offer a service to upgrade any manufacturer’s fittings – not just their own.

Where does the upgrade happen?

Such upgrades can take place on the customer’s site. That minimises downtime, with each luminaire upgraded quickly, so that operations on the site are not materially impacted. It is important to ensure that the mercury-containing fluorescent lamps removed are properly collected and recycled – and backhauling to a Recolight container on the wholesaler premises is the ideal solution. Ballasts and other electrical components that are removed should also be recycled.

For more complex remanufacturing solutions, the best approach is frequently to arrange for products to be shipped to the manufacturer’s site.

How can wholesalers get involved?

Wholesalers are already a vital link in the supply chain of new lighting products. But a pivot to supporting remanufacture and upgrade solutions will ensure they do not lose out as the increased focus on sustainability and Net Zero emissions drives growth in this sector.

At the simplest level, wholesalers can simply be involved in working with their suppliers to offer LED upgrade kits to their customers. But for wholesalers that also offer, or partner with, electrical contracting services, that can extend to supply and installation services. And wholesalers that have a Recolight waste lamp container can also provide takeback of the waste lamps that arise.

Where more complex remanufacture necessitates movement of luminaires to the manufacturer’s premises, wholesalers can still be involved as the primary link between customer and manufacturer.

How does the warranty work?

Remanufactured lighting products would normally be regarded as being placed on the market, and so all the usual compliance requirements will apply, including the application of relevant conformity marks

such UKCA or CE. The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring compliance and would also be expected to supply a warranty for upgrades.

Are there applicable standards for remanufactured products?

A new standard for remanufactured lighting has been developed by a BSI working group which included a number of leading lighting manufacturers, the Lighting Industry Association and Recolight. BS8887:221 will help in the compliance assessment of remanufactured lighting and will also give customers the confidence that the remanufacture has been undertaken in an appropriate and consistent manner. The standard is currently open for public comment but should be finalised and published before the end of 2024.

Customers, whether homeowners or commercial, are now rightly demanding precise up-to-date knowledge, innovative design, energy efficiency and sustainability from their lighting products. Simon Shenton, Head of LED Development at Luceco, explains why wholesalers need to look for trusted manufacturers in a rapidly evolving market.

MARKET FORCES

When it comes to specifying lighting, experience and expertise matters and can, in fact, be crucial, depending upon the installation setting.

For example, the Colour Rendering Index (CRI) measures how well a light source shows the true colours of an object compared to natural light. The appearance of eight colour samples (R1R8) are compared under the light in question and a reference light source and given an Ra score, typically 70 or 80 which can be thought of as a percentage of how accurately the colour samples were reproduced.

However, there is a specific test – CRI R9 – that focuses on how well a light shows red/pink colours. Red is a critical colour for many applications where an accurate representation of red is essential. In photography for example, good red light ensures natural and vibrant photos, whilst in the textile industry, material colour needs to be consistent, so it is vital for quality control. In medical settings however, people can look pale or even green if a light source doesn’t produce enough red, so having an accurate red rendering can help with diagnoses.

Where reds are concerned, a good R9 score is required. The maximum possible R9 score is 100 and achieving that is tough. Even ascertaining the R9 score of a product is difficult as most don’t specify it – and when they do, it’s often below 20. Luceco has identified R9’s importance and can offer R9 values of greater than 50 as a special option on most products.

Shining a light on Net Zero

In the light of the ongoing environmental issues faced by everyone, Luceco recognises the important role it plays in achieving Net Zero. Its low-carbon products have been developed to help businesses reduce energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability targets. As such, wholesalers stocking products that deliver on this front will be most successful.

Luceco product development focuses on a commitment to low-carbon and green targets, for example, the company is continuously improving the Lumens per Watt of its LED products to give customers

“ Luceco recognises the important role it plays in achieving Net Zero”

more light for every Watt of energy they use. In addition, Luceco is improving how installed LEDs are distributed to reduce the number of lights needed and therefore the overall energy consumption.

Supplying sustainable lighting solutions

One example of Luceco’s sustainable lighting solutions is the Luxbay Ultra warehouse linear product, designed to replace traditional discharge lighting in commercial and industrial settings. The Luxbay Ultra consumes 50% less energy compared to traditional lighting solutions and has a longer lifespan.

And, whilst technology, especially for LED, is rapidly developing, it’s important to ensure that the recommendations, standards and guidance surrounding the technological advances improve to match the potential since this will help to push the sustainability agenda further forward.

LED lights typically produce useful light for two or even three times longer and consume up to 80% less energy than their conventional counterparts. This longer LED

life produces savings throughout the product lifecycle, including savings on materials, installation costs (as systems could run for 10 years or more) as well as maintenance and replacement costs, making them the go-to option for companies who are seriously targeting Net Zero.

Luceco’s FType range of fire-rated downlighters has been designed to not only provide highly energy efficient lighting, conforming to all the required regulations for this type of light, but also to pack a punch when it comes to product choice – the range features three models each packed with multiple benefits, simplifying the decision-making process for installers, saving them both time and money. Shrewd wholesalers will look at manufacturers who can deliver on this and more, including a reliable supply of product and technical advice and back up if required.

Lighting design service

With a wealth of outstanding lighting products to choose from, wholesalers as well as their customers can benefit from Luceco’s free Lighting Design Service. Combining extensive product knowledge with exceptional design expertise, Luceco’s friendly team will work with customers to provide first class design solutions for any installation.

Luceco's products can help businesses reduce their energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability targets. By investing in low-carbon solutions, companies can make a positive impact on the environment while also saving on

energy costs. Luceco is at the forefront of thought leadership in this area, leading the way in sustainable product development and committing to reducing both its own and its customers’ carbon footprints. More customers are approaching Luceco with their own sustainability goals, and by conducting a lighting audit, the company can make recommendations for new fixtures and controls that are designed to reduce energy consumption. Lighting companies have a responsibility to recognise this need and ensure they continually evolve business operation for the benefit of all – and as this demand from all end users continues to grow, wholesalers need to ensure that their chosen lighting manufacturer can deliver on this.

AT THE CUTTINGEDGE

David Barnes, Marketing Manager at KNIPEX, looks at five hand tools and innovations that save time, money and effort for electricians.

For electrical wholesalers aiming to support their customers, staying informed about the latest tools and innovations is important. After all, anything that saves electricians time, money and effort will prove popular at the trade counter. We see this in action at tradeshows such as Elex, where electricians get to try out our tools on specially made rigs. The feedback is usually unanimous; enthusiasm for innovative hand tools that are meticulously engineered to streamline everyday tasks can enhance an electrician’s efficiency, organisation and safety. With this in mind, every year, KNIPEX launches its new innovations and 2024 is no different. This year, the StepCut has been upscaled to introduce the new XL version (95 18 225), featuring a front cutting edge

designed specifically for handling larger cable cross-sections. It can slice through solid copper and aluminium cables up to 35mm², stranded cables up to 70mm² and fine-stranded cables as large as 120mm².

Stepping up

The StepCut XL incorporates a power joint and long handles that significantly reduce the effort needed for cutting. It has two distinct cutting areas: a front cutting edge for tackling very large cables incrementally, equipped with an ergonomically designed handle, and a stepped main cutting edge that holds the cable close to the joint. This design ensures optimal leverage, requiring less force during the cutting process. Safety features include an anti-pinch guard to prevent injuries and a screwable joint that allows for recalibration, ensuring that the shears remain precise and smooth-operating over time.

tool for 2024 is the

Stripping Knife (16 50 145 SB) which features a practical ratchet function that makes work faster, safer and more efficient. Even very hard cable sheaths can be easily cut by the versatile blade, while a guide shoe protects the conductor insulation under the sheath. This stripping knife can be used to safely and quickly cut and remove even very hard or tough plastic sheaths, for example on underground or connection cables, with a wall thickness of up to 7mm.

It has three different cutting areas: one blade segment is designed for a lengthwise cut by pushing, the other for a lengthwise cut by pulling or ratcheting (the ratchet function ensures less effort and more comfort when working). A further blade segment with an additional cutting edge means the knife penetrates easily into the material during circumferential cutting.

It is no secret that cordless tools have become increasingly popular in recent years as an alternative to corded tools. With more tradespeople looking for new ways to tackle construction tasks more efficiently, many are adopting cordless kit and for wholesalers looking to ensure their range meets demand and continues to deliver real value to their customers, this category presents a huge opportunity for revenue.

Key benefits

Supplying the products that the electrical trade needs and wants is the first rule of good customer service and will help foster customer loyalty. Here, Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, explains why stocking the correct range of cordless tools is a wise investment and outlines the features and technologies that will benefit customers.

For the end user, there are several key benefits to eliminating the need for power cables. Firstly, it allows greater freedom of movement and flexibility as cordless tools can be used anywhere with no restrictions based on where a power source is located and no cables getting in the way. This in turn allows electricians and electrical contractors to work far more effectively in awkward or confined spaces. This also enables improved productivity as there is no time wasted finding the nearest power source – users can get straight to work and move from one task to another quicker. There is also a safety benefit to using cordless tools as it eliminates a potential trip hazard in the form of trailing cables and saves the setup time of routing the cables safely in the work area. However, these advantages are only part of the story. The surge in the popularity of cordless is also due to the advances in

tool and battery technologies that have increased both the performance and the runtime per battery charge. Cordless tools can now match the performance of corded equivalents for a wide range of applications, including some of the most demanding tasks. This is something that should be highlighted to customers who are seeking advice on the best tool for the job.

This improvement in performance is particularly true for products that feature brushless motors. In contrast to a conventional brushed motor that relies on contact between the brushes and motor coil, brushless motors use electromagnetism to rotate the motor and drive the action of the tool, eliminating friction and wasted energy. As a result, a brushless motor can produce more torque, allowing the same results to be achieved with less power used, which can extend run times by up to 50% per battery charge. This offers a significant benefit to customers in terms of improved productivity and less frequent recharging. Brushless motors also require

less maintenance as there is no need to replace brushes and as it generates less heat, the life of the tool can be extended by reducing repeated temperature cycles.

Choosing the right range

As with any category of product, the cordless tool ranges offered by different manufacturers can vary significantly in terms of performance, features and benefits so choosing which to stock is an important decision.

There are benefits to both the customer and the wholesaler of choosing a manufacturer that can offer a single battery system for a broad range of cordless tools. For example, Makita has two main battery systems for trade professionals. The 18V LXT battery system, which is compatible with more than 325 different products and the 40VMax XGT system, designed specifically for the highest demand applications, which currently has over 125 products in its range.

For end users, the ability to interchange between tools such as drills and drivers to saws to lighting to specialist tools like drywall cutters to tackle different tasks seamlessly with one battery is a strong sales message. The battery can simply be moved from one to the other in seconds. Once invested into the battery platform system, these customers will remain loyal to the brand family, again opening up ongoing revenue streams as they increase their cordless tool supply.

For wholesalers, a single battery system means a leaner inventory as fewer different battery and charger types need to be stocked. It also makes it simpler for branch staff to not only manage but also requires far less information to digest regarding battery technology, so in turn, they can offer customers more detailed insight into the features and technologies to support them in making an informed purchase decision. It also gives wholesalers more scope to stock body only products – tools supplied without the batteries – allowing them to offer customers a valuable cost-saving option.

Finally, when choosing which products to stock, consider manufacturers that offer a wide range of cordless machines within a single battery platform. Taking this approach means that wholesalers and distributors can simplify their stocked range with fewer SKUs from different manufacturers to learn. With a more rationalised range, customer account teams can provide more detailed insight and support to buyers in their purchase journey.

The importance of genuine batteries

A key aspect of stocking cordless is ensuring a reliable range of additional and replacement batteries. It is important that tools are only used with genuine batteries produced by the manufacturer and wholesalers are ideally placed to warn customers about the risk of using nongenuine and counterfeit batteries. By positioning themselves as a reliable source of high quality genuine batteries, stockists can prevent losing business to massmarket online marketplaces. For its part, Makita always recommends that professionals only source from reputable retailers such as trusted wholesalers.

Should a customer ever be tempted to apply a third-party battery to their tools, there are a range of hazards and issues that should be highlighted to them. In addition to poorer performance and the invalidation of manufacturer warranties, there are serious safety risks to using non-approved batteries. Often these batteries will not have undergone the rigorous testing that

genuine batteries do. With low quality, untested products there is a real danger of thermal runaway occurring, which can lead to the battery overheating, catching fire or even, in the worst cases, exploding.

Furthermore, replica batteries will not include the safety features that leading tool manufacturers build into their batteries.

Manufacturer support

As always, it’s important to make sure you have the appropriate product knowledge to guide customers and to make recommendations that increases potential basket value. Makita has regular training programmes and four UK training and service facilities, to keep wholesale partners fully updated on new products in its range and its technologies, which can be a beneficial resource to provide further value and care for your client base.

TRENDS, RISKS AND SOLUTIONS

KNX looks at some of the key trends shaping the UK’s home automation market in 2024.

Here at KNX UK, the two biggest topics at the moment are the explosion of IoT in smart home and building controls and PSTI – the new UK regulation to protect consumers from being hacked via connected smart devices.

These are big topics, far bigger than the column inches available here, but an overview of the trends and items to consider to keep your clients – and your reputation safe, will hopefully encourage you to take a deeper dive into these subjects.

Let’s start with the most common drivers for consumers and homeowners seeking smart home controls.

Several key trends are shaping the UK market in 2024:

Smart lighting: Smart lighting systems are becoming increasingly popular. Initially thought of as purely energy saving, more and more consumers are discovering the

benefits of systems that allow users to control the brightness and colour of their lights to create the perfect ambiance for any occasion. Use of scene settings that include heating/cooling, shading and AV at the touch of a single button or programmed for specific times of the day are becoming more and more desirable.

Energy efficiency: With rising energy costs, smart thermostats and energy management systems are in high demand. The ability for programmable or sensor driven zone control further enhances both energy efficiency and occupant comfort.

Home security: Smart security systems, including video doorbells, smart locks and surveillance cameras, are becoming essential for many homeowners.

Integration and ecosystems: There is a growing trend towards creating integrated smart home ecosystems. As mentioned above, creating whole ecosystems in different areas in a home or building means specific levels of lighting, heating, cooling, according to activity and time of day. Automated and sensor driven technology ensures that energy is only used when needed.

Health and wellness: Smart home technology is also focusing on health and wellness, with devices like air purifiers, smart beds and fitness trackers becoming more common. Separate entertainment zones and variable Wi-Fi access programmed by room, time of day or by a

HOME AUTOMATION

specific device can reduce stress and screen overload. Weather stations, sun tracking and automatic shading also enhance the occupant experience and promote a calm environment - while saving precious resources.

AI and automation: Artificial intelligence is playing a bigger role in home automation, with AI-powered devices learning user preferences and automating routine tasks. This can be of great benefit in assisted living settings, in terms of both independence and remote monitoring.

With great power, as they say, comes great responsibility. The new PSTI regulations have increased the responsibilities of manufacturers, importers and retailers. Default passwords, device updates and support periods are all subject to these regulations. If you supply any connected devices to your clients, it is your responsibility to check that the products you sell are compliant. Check out uk.gov/psti for more information and over the coming months KNX UK will be providing more information for integrators and distributors on this subject.

Cyber security has always been a strong focus for the crosscompany development of KNX technologies and this is a stringent component of the compliance and certification process. Ensuring the KNX worldwide standard is at the heart of home and building controls can provide that extra level of security required.

Considered by some as a largely wired system, KNX has long been available over IP and RF and the development of KNX IoT has created opportunities to fully integrate a secure KNX based home automation system with:

● Amazon Alexa:.

● Google Home:

● Apple HomeKit:.

● Samsung SmartThings:

● OpenHAB

The ability to integrate these within a secure KNX platform provides opportunities for home automation specialists to easily demonstrate the benefits of a fully integrated, secured system. Details for UK based KNX training can be found on the KNX UK website. KNX UK is a non-profit trade association tasked with raising awareness of the KNX worldwide standard.

HELLERMANNTYTON ALL-IN-ONE RUBBER SLEEVE KITS

HellermannTyton has introduced an all-in-one kit for its well-known rubber sleeves. Commonly used by those working in the electrical industry, rubber sleeves protect cables from heat, moisture and chemicals. Safeguarding electrical and mechanical systems, the sleeves ensure cables are secured and easily identifiable.

The rubber sleeves were previously only sold in quantities of 1,000 by colour. Now, with the option of a refillable kit, customers can fill 17 compartments with up to 200 sleeves in a variety of colours and sizes.

The introduction of a kit provides customers with an alternative to purchasing the sleeves in large quantities, now, they can mix and match the sleeves in an easily accessible organiser. The smaller quantities encourage waste reduction and save on cost as the whole kit is worth the same as one bag of 1,000 rubber sleeves.

Usually sold separately, the kit includes an expansion tool and a bottle of lubricant, the latter of which is designed to absorb into the sleeves to prevent cracking and maintain good condition.

one of the Top 21 global innovators for HVAC production. Being amongst the most patent holders in the world, the high quality, sustainable production demonstrates its active R&D team.

One of Panasonic’s latest innovations is heat pumps that utilise R290 refrigerant, which offers a low global warming potential (GWP) of 3. This year, Panasonic launched its new M Series T-CAP range of hydronic solutions with R290, offering a more comprehensive range of heat pump capacities: 9, 12, 16, 20, 25, and 30kW, with the option of 300kW when operated in a cascade configuration.

Training

Ultimately, the education of sustainable solutions and their implementations is crucial for the HVAC sector's collective progression towards more sustainable practices. Panasonic's fully kitted out training centres across the UK, including a mobile unit, and its collaboration with

several training partners and providers, underscore the company's commitment to upskilling current and future generations in the industry.

The future and hydrogen fuel cell technology

Hydrogen fuel cell technology provides an innovative method for generating heat and electricity, showing another way that air source technology can be used. Analysts predict that clean hydrogen could meet 24% of global energy demand by 2050, with annual sales in the range of €630 billion, though achieving this requires significant effort from all areas to meet these ambitious targets. Panasonic was one of the first companies to release a commercially viable pure hydrogen fuel cell system in 2009, and is now developing larger units for commercial applications, advancing towards its 2050 targets.

At Panasonic, decarbonising society is crucial, supporting both environmental goals and people's wellbeing. Panasonic set a standard with the world's first RE100 factory using full-scale hydrogen at its H2 KIBOU factory in Japan. Since then, Panasonic has added two more hydrogen powered factories and plans a third in the UK later this year.
